Consumers want to know where their food comes from. They are even happier when they can visit the places where the food is grown and meet the producers in person. Indiana’s dairy producers, including dairy cows, dairy goats, and dairy camels—yes, camels—are a vital part of the state’s agritourism industry. According to

the Indiana Office of Tourism Development and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA), agritourism “includes agriculturally-based commercial enterprises conducted for the enjoyment, education and active involvement of visitors.” From northern Indiana’s Fair Oaks Farms at Fair Oaks to the southeastern corridor’s Goat Milk Stuff at Scottsburg, family-owned farms are great at telling the story of milk and its value-added products from farm gate to family plate.

Nationally-recognized Fair Oaks Farms is a precedent-setter when it comes to educating the general public about modern farming practices. “We are unique because educating the public is our main goal including providing self-guided tours of both dairy and pig farms which promote animal welfare, innovation in the agriculture industry and providing safe and nutritious products for consumers,” says Leslie Rusk, the farms’ marketing and special events director. “We want to bridge the gap between farmer and consumer. Our story, is your story.” Their story features their oldest and most well-known attraction, the Dairy Adventure. Built in 2004, families can hop on colorfully painted buses to visit the free stall cattle barns. You can witness the miracle of cows giving birth in the birthing barn where between 80-100 calves are born every day. Exhibits include cow nutrition and the safety and nutrition of milk. And daredevil youth can climb to “Udder Heights” in Mooville’s interactive area.

In addition to the dairy emphasis, the farm added the Pig Adventure in 2013 and most recently, the WinField Crop Adventure in 2016. The site also features a gift shop, and three tempting eateries, the rustic and welcoming Farmhouse Restaurant, the Cowfe´, and the Dairycatessen. Fair Oaks is dedicated to sustainability, even building anaerobic digesters which turn animal manure into Compressed Natural Gas to power their fleet and farm, according to Rusk. “Visitors are always wowed by our innovations. We are proud to say we are ‘Powered by Poo.’” For those families wanting to leisurely visit Fair Oaks, the business is partnering with Fairfield Inn and Suites to open a 99-room hotel, with silo suites available in 2019. Fulfilling a niche dairy market and a taste of farm life just northwest of Indianapolis at Zionsville is Traders Point Creamery, a 150-acre, familyowned dairy farm and artisan creamery. Noted for being the first TRADERS PO USDA certified organic dairy farm INT CREAME RY in Indiana when they opened in 2003, the operation specializes in 100 percent grass-fed, non-homogenized milk and dairy products packaged in glass. Owners Dr. Fritz Kunz and Jane Elder Kunz prize their heritage breed cows and the picturesque setting the working farm sits on. “The Loft farmstead restaurant is the most organic in the state, deriving ingredients—like dairy, pork, eggs, and produce—from our farm. Visitors love the authenticity of dining in our historic 1860s barn,” says Gail Alden, director of marketing and events. The Creamery’s delicious products from milk to yogurt to cheese can be purchased at the on-site food store and smooth-assilk ice cream at the Dairy Bar, both on the barn’s lower level. Winners of many awards, their Whole Milk Yogurt won first place in the 2015 American Cheese Society competition. Visitors wanting up close experiences will sign up for self-guided or private tours and tastings opportunities. The farm’s renowned milking parlor is open to the public where you can stand alongside the farmers to see how milk is processed. Chief Executive Officer Mark Vander Kooy looks forward to the operation’s expanded walking trails, more event spaces, and an enhanced nature component thanks to a new partnership with nearby Eagle Creek Park. “We will also be offering low-fat milk. We currently are in 1,600 stores throughout the country.” For more information go to www.traderspointcreamery.com.

Kelsay stresses dairy farmers today, like in the past, care deeply

about their animals and their people. “We are a sixth-generation family dairy farm and the only working dairy farm in Johnson County. Corn mazes, tours of the barns, drinking a signature Kelsay Farms milkshake, and seeing baby calves up close are some highlights of your visits here.” For more information go to www.kelsayfarms.com. From their 10-member family to yours, the Jonas’s of Goat Milk Stuff in Scottsburg are known for welcoming you personally in every aspect of your visit. Their tagline, “Work hard. Get dirty. This hard work and the way we care for our animals results in goat milk products that are of the highest quality and make a difference in people’s lives.” The dairy operation is the first and only Grade A goat diary in Indiana. The farm is the only place where people can legally purchase Indiana-grown, pasteurized goat milk, yogurt, and kefir--similar to yogurt--for human consumption. Shelbyville’s Bass Farms is cleaning up on the skin care industry with what some are calling a “breakthrough.” What started as a hobby for Jana Bass in 2010, selling her goat’s milk lotions at farmer’s markets, is now a success story. One year into her business, Dr. Darrel L. Ross, a radiation oncologist in Indianapolis, endorsed Bass Farms’ Triple B Hydrating Cream, as a healing agent for radiation burns from cancer treatments. It has led to a cult following of cancer patients around the state and region, and others, who seek the moisturizing miracle.

Hancock County, just east of Indianapolis, is an area rich with vibrant communities and attractions, and is also proud of its agricultural heritage. It’s here you’ll find Tyner Pond Farm, where visitors are always welcome, and encouraged to explore the grounds. You can see first-hand how the animals—chickens, pigs, and cattle—are treated with great care in a stress-free, pasture-raised environment. The idyllic setting provides a perfect backdrop for a day on the farm. And for those wanting an overnight experience, there’s a new guest house with four bedrooms, three full baths, state-of-the-art kitchen, and large dining area. And if you place an order at least five days before your visit, the refigerator will be stocked and ready for you. Tyner Pond Farm practices “sustainable agriculture” which pays as much attention to the longevity of the land as the quality of the product. And speaking of product, theirs can be tasted at several establishments including their own “The Mug” restaurant. The Mug’s “Farm to Curb” slogan is a testament to this non-traditional drive-in restauarant that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, and more—all with locally-sourced meats and ingredients. There are two locations—one in Greenfield and one in Indianapolis. For more information, go to www.tynerpondfarm.com. For more things to do in Hancock County, go to www.hcvb.org.

Bass first created the cream as a gift, for a friend about to give birth. Calling it, “Baby Butt Butter”, she believed it perfect for diaper rash. Once word spread that it soothed radiation-affected skin, it was re-named Triple B Hydrating Cream. Today, it is their #1-selling product, sold in nearly 80 locations around Indiana—many that are hospitals. “There is a pound of lanolin in every batch, that locks in moisture,” says Jana Bass. “Lanolin locks in your own moisture and locks out the outside elements.” she explains. “It also contains frankincense and myrrh, known to be healing.” Brad Bass, Jana’s husband, recently quit his job to devote time to the burgeoning business. Their daughter, Jessica Wampler, helps out. Bass says talking to cancer patients about how her products have helped them is cathartic, after losing both parents, and a brother, to the deadly disease. Their stories, she contends, and giving back, make it all worthwhile. Bass Farms has donated over $8,000 in products to The Giving Gig, one of Indianapolis’ top fundraising events for Community Health Network’s Oncology Patient Assistance Fund. All Bass Farm products are made from FDA-approved goat milk, with all-natural ingredients of the highest quality, and Satisfaction Guaranteed. I have been fighting metastatic breast cancer for 2 years now. One of my side effects has been very dry hands and cracking of the skin around my fingers and fingernails, which could become very irritating and painful. I bought every cream under the sun, until I got Triple “B” hydrating cream. It has cured all of the cracking and continues to keep my skin from becoming so dry! This cream is absolutely amazing! Thank you for making such a great and helpful product. — Julie from Evansville, IN

The kindest business person I’ve ever encountered! Jana Bass truly cares for people. As my sister-in-law was battling cancer for the second time in her short life, Jana heard about it and sent a box full of Bass Farms products to her, to help make her feel better, at no charge. Kristin loved them! Kristin has since passed away but I’ll never forget that kindness! My family and I use and promote Bass Farm products and we love them!!! They are truly a blessing. Thank you so much for creating Triple B lotion. My 97-year-old grandmother is a dialysis patient. We have tried multiple over-the-counter and prescription creams to help with redness on her legs due to kidney disease and dialysis treatments. I decided to give Triple B a try, after hearing about it being used on cancer patients. The results have been amazing! Her legs no longer have a rash or are red. Thank you for creating this amazing product!

A friend saw your product at a retail store, read the “oncology recommended” and sent me some Triple B. I had just found out I had breast cancer. With the damage to my skin, they weren’t sure I would be able to have implants. They also thought they would have to use 2 incisions because of the damage, but I started using Triple B the day after my first surgery. When they went to cut me for the (second) surgery, he said my scars looked awesome and healed amazing. Thank you again for an amazing product. — Tricia Brown of NC

The Plumer and Bowers Farmstead is three generations working together to preserve their heritage and create a legacy. The family returned to their 1886 roots to raise pasture and specialty crops for their livestock and their family. They sell pastured eggs, grass-fed beef, whole wheat flour, honey, sweet cornmeal and popcorn. They participate in local Farmer’s Markets. 4454 East County Road 800 North Seymour, IN

From childhood, George Schneider, had one ambition--to grow trees to enhance the beauty of his surroundings. That ambition continues more than 60 years later at this generational nursery, now boasting approxiately 500 acres. The nursery also offers design help and supplies trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals for wholesale and retail customers. The garden center offers a variety of pottery and outdoor décor. Turn your yard into a beautiful getaway with Schneider’s.

This three generational farm is led by Bob and Linda Claycamp, their children and grandchildren. They have around 100 head of Holsteins and have provided quality milk for commercial buyers for years. Jon Claycamp makes three kinds of his own cheese, which are sold to food distributors, at local farm markets and at their small farm store, located alongside a quaint cabin. Jon also makes large quantities of ice cream. He fills the commercial freezer with pints and gallons of homemade, fresh ice cream and customers can purchase throughout the year…mainly using the honor system. 10025 N. nnkeeper Paul Wagoner came to CFC properties in 2004 after thinking he was finished with hotel management. He stumbled upon the opportunity to run the inn while applying to rent an apartment in Bloomington with CFC Properties, the real estate arm of Cook Group. “It wasn’t anything that I was aware of,” Wagoner said, “but one I stepped into. It was pretty amazing, because I had stepped away from the hotel industry, really had no desire to go back… but this is a whole different ball game.” Because many Indiana University departments utilize the Grant Street Inn for visitors, the guests are often diverse and sometimes acclaimed. “We can go through one week where everybody in here is from Eastern Europe, and then all of a sudden the weekend starts and you have a powercycling group or a mandolin camp in here,” Wagoner said. Beside the mosaic fireplace in the Ziegler house is a photograph of Danny Glover, star of The Good Catholic, who stayed in the Grant Street Inn while the movie was filming in Bloomington last year. Wagoner said that the best part of the Grant Street Inn, though, is building relationships with long-term guests. “We like to be kind of a home away from home, especially for the IU parents, IU alumni… It’s kind of like they have a bedroom in our house.” Many of these guests come to stay in the inn multiple times each Fall for IU football and basketball games. “Graduation weekend is somewhat bittersweet for us,” Wagoner said. “All

of those parents that you’ve known for… years, their kids are graduating and you’ll never see them again… We still have occasional parents who… I sometimes get a call from or an email from just to check to see who’s all still there and what’s going on.” The most popular weekend for the Grant Street Inn every year is indisputably IU Graduation weekend. Because approximately 250 requests are received for only 40 rooms, selection occurs in a lottery. Starting in January, previous guests may enter the drawing for the next year’s graduation. Wagoner has been with the Grant Street Inn for 13 years. “He’s always willing to help out and put other people first before himself. And he’s just got one of those personalities where he can make you feel really comfortable,” Rebecca Johnson said. "All of the staff at the Grant Street Inn are great. They really care about one another, which in affect, rolls over making guests feel welcome and at home." Bloomington’s signature bed and breakfast, the Grant Street Inn, occupies a block of Grant Street between 7th and 8th street sporting an unmistakable yellow exterior. Behind the front door of the main Ziegler house, the details of the 1880s Victorian once-rental house come to life. The original parquet hardwood floor remains, and other parts of the house such as two pocket doors now serve as decor inside guest rooms. The Ziegler house is populated with a multitude of antiques, each with a unique story. The Ziegler house was built in 1883 by William

But the Grant Street Inn doesn’t just have 40 different rooms, because “they’re constantly turning them over and freshening them up,” CFC Properties Marketing Specialist Rebecca Johnson said. The most recent renovation occurred in the two-room cottage behind the Zielgar house."Before, the Cottage boasted a dark and moody atmosphere of chocolate and sea greens. Now, following the remodel, it's a palette of bright whites and soft creams where it feels very open and refreshing. So, if you stayed in the Cottage before and stay in it again today, you'll have a whole new experience!" Complimentary homemade breakfast buffet is provided each morning in the dining area between the Ziegler house and the Gilstrap house. A wrap-around porch encircles the exterior of these two houses, complete with a small stream and several white rocking chairs. Wagoner said some days, “all the rocking chairs are filled, all the people are out with a glass of wine or a glass of iced tea… They all get to know one another because they’re all on the rocking chairs together.” For guests who haven’t found their favorite room or want to experience new rooms, the Grant Street Inn has recently started offering a “mystery room.” The inn will choose your room, as an opportunity to “build the anticipation before you get to your getaway,” Johnson said.

Rogers, Dean of the Indiana University School of Law. The house is entrenched in Bloomington history, as it was later owned by William Graham, builder of the Graham Hotel, and William N. Showers, owner of Showers Brothers Furniture Factory. By the 1990s, it served as a 7-apartment student rental house behind First Presbyterian Church. When it became fearful that the house might have to be torn down because the church was in need of more space, Bloomington Restorations approached Bill and Gayle Cook. The Cooks bought the house for $1 and moved it two and a half blocks east to it’s current location. The Grant Street Inn opened in 1991 with 14 rooms. After a successful opening, nearby structures, today known as the Annex and Buttercup Cottage were converted from apartments to additional guest rooms increasing the room count to 24. Then in 2012, it added 16 more rooms across Grant Street. The newest building is LEED certified, with a more modern feel, but remains connected to the main house with replicated trim and the same iconic yellow exterior. The Grant Street Inn has “become quite a tradition in downtown Bloomington,” Wagoner said. It remains a constant force in the face of many recent hotel developments. Wagoner said, “We represent local downtown Bloomington.” With a total of 40 guest rooms, the Grant Street Inn offers 40 unique experiences. Part of the hometown charm is that each room has a completely different feel than the next. “No two are alike,” Innkeeper Paul Wagoner said. “It’s an experience. People find their favorite room or their favorite building. We don’t have 40 rooms that all look like a standard hotel.”

NOBLESVILLE – Chris Theisen loves summer Saturdays. Early morning Saturdays. While the rest of the house sleeps in, he drives to downtown Noblesville, grabs a cup of coffee at Noble Coffee, gets some cash from a bank ATM, and walks over to Federal Hill Commons along the west side of Highway 19 at Ind. 38. He’s already at the farmers market when it opens. “I have a usual list of things I get,” Theisen says. “Vegetables from Wilson’s Farm, baked goods from an Amish family, and My Dad’s sweet corn. Sometimes I’ll pick up pork sausage to make with breakfast. Sometimes I’ll pick up some flowers for my daughter and wife. Sometimes I’ll get beignets from Chef Adam’s Jaws food truck, or get tamales to go for my wife. “Once I got a watermelon for a family get-together later that day. Unfortunately, I had to walk back to the car lugging that one.”

Theisen says it’s the perfect start to the weekend. The Noblesville farmers market is held from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday May 5-Oct. 13. It’s the oldest and largest in Hamilton County with close to 90 vendors offering items that include homegrown fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, flowers, honey, wines, jams, jellies, and salsas. Locally handmade items include baked goods, soaps, jewelry, artwork, crafts and pet products. The food court offers breakfast and lunch choices along with takeout items and snack foods. Tables welcome patrons who want to sit and visit while listening to live performers. The market is perhaps the most popular event sponsored by Noblesville Main Street. Noblesville was one of 19 charter members of the Indiana Main Street program in the late 1980s; there are now 132 Main Street programs in 81 Indiana counties. They’re affiliated with Main Street America. While each chooses its own programming, all are dedicated to fostering the economic and cultural vitality of their downtowns by preserving the past and enhancing historic assets. There are more than 60 events sponsored by Noblesville Main Street each year, and most are free to the public.

The largest event—more than 20,000 in attendance last year—is the annual Street Dance, this year on July 14. It includes a band, roaming performers, beer garden and a separate kids’ zone. Other events include First Fridays, held in the early evening, with a different focus each month. May, for example, offers Upstairs Downtown, a chance to see what’s above the first floor of many downtown buildings. June has a bed race on 9th Street between Conner and Logan. Later months include jazz fests, a chocolate trail, and holiday events. CanStruction, in October, uses packaged food items to create unique sculptures; the food is then donated to food pantries.

I GO RVING

ELKHART — A generation ago, a lot of the customers coming through a recreational vehicle dealership had gray hair. Now many of them are pushing baby strollers, according to Kevin Broom, director of media relations for the RV Industry Association.

Millennials, those born from the early 1980s until the mid-1990s to early 2000s, are buying RVs. What this group of customers wants is a bit different than previous generations and the modern RV is different than those that preceded it as well. The two are coming together to fuel sales.

I Outdoor GO RVING

That’s good news for northern Indiana where most of the country’s RVs are made. Last year was the first time the industry shipped more than half a million units and this year the total could be 520,000, which would make it the ninth consecutive year of growth, said Broom. Demographic breakdowns of purchases won’t be available until a study is completed later this year, but Broom knows that a new generation is taking an interest in RVs as its members get families and careers established. Many families take advantage of favorable financing to buy a small camper that can be towed behind a sport utility vehicle, and now have pickup trucks as daily vehicles because they’re comfortable and easier to drive than those in the past. “They’ve already got the truck. It’s pretty cheap to get a hitch put in it. They can buy the RV and find a place to store it,” he said of the progression many people make. The person with an active lifestyle who seeks experience and adventure can take the RV to the beach one weekend, the hills of southern Indiana the next, and also use it for tailgating, music festivals and soccer tournaments, Broom said. The money you save on accommodations as you travel can add up e to make an RV a prudent purchase. mor

Advances in technology have made it easier for RV manufacturers to provide what customers want when they leave home. Televisions are inexpensive and hang on a wall. Microwaves, convection ovens and massage chairs are easy to include. Slideouts expand the living space, and generators are lighter and more efficient. Making an RV a wifi hotspot isn’t difficult. Camping is an opportunity to get away and maybe you’re not on your phone 24 hours a day, but sometime during the day you want to plug in, said Jon Krider, vice president of product development and marketing at Thor Motor Coach. “That’s just societally driven. People are used to having this computer in their pocket,” he said. What this generation of travelers also wants to take with them fits into the RV lifestyle, said Andy Wesdorp, general manager of the Road Warrior and Fuel brands of Heartland RVs. While bikes, kayaks and paddleboards fit into many RVs, the “toy haulers” let a family park an All-Terrain Vehicle or dune buggy in the garage of a fifth-wheel trailer and hit the road with the family.

41

I Outdoor GO RVING

“A big part of this is Millennials tend to be a pretty social band,” said Wesdorp. Clubs or groups who share an interest in a type of outdoor recreation will circle up the toy haulers at a campground. As the toys get used on dunes or trails, the garages become “party patios,” he said. Just as a growing number of Millenials are buying the toy haulers, more are taking an interest in motorhomes, said Krider. “We’re not seeing a ton of Millennials business quite yet,” he said, but they are seeing those in that age group ask questions and request features. “In the next five years or so, you’ll really start to see an influx of Millennial-age consumers looking at this market and seeing if it’s the right thing for them,” he said. He knows that they want solar power and sleek lines, not something that looks or functions like their grandfather’s motorhome. These units may be smaller, packed with electronics, approved for national parks, and less expensive. His team includes designers who are age 28 to 45 who are seeking to serve both current customers and those to come. Younger buyers kicking the tires is good news for an industry that’s booming at the moment. “I think given the enthusiasm that Millennials have for RVing, it bodes pretty well,” said Broom.

When the first reasonably warm weekend in spring arrives, they are out the door, often destined for Brown County State Park. “We are ready,” Betsy said. “We are always ready.” Now, campers like the Meyers can reserve campsites at Indiana State Parks in advance yearround, not just during the traditional outdoor recreation season. Camping has always been available year-round at state parks. But in the past, campers could not reserve a site in advance between November 1 and early May. Sites were available only by registering onsite the day of camping, and they were administered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“It’s completely different,” Betsy said. “It was quiet.”

April is part of the spring “shoulder season.” Shoulder seasons are the travel period between peak-season and offseason. They occur in late winter to spring and in late fall

It is probably a little bit shorter. Peak season has extended further into the fall with harvest festivals and Halloween eventsincreasing in popularity.

Beyond smaller crowds and enjoyable temperatures (usually), the benefits of planning a shoulder season day-trip or overnighter at an Indiana State Park are numerous.

C

You won’t have to swat bugs, or lather yourself in spray.

C

There’s less of a chance of encountering poison ivy.

C

Crisp, clear nights make for cozy campfire experiences.

C

Some park gatehouses are unattended during this period; you may not have to pay admission.

C

Many state park campgrounds have heated restrooms and a year-round source of water for campers.

C C

High-demand campsites will be more available.

The shoulder season coincides with many bird migrations, and natural areas are often loaded with feathered travelers from far-away places.

C

Less vegetation in wooded areas can make spotting wildlife easier.

C

For anglers, the fishing can be great.

I STATE PARKS

The only real disadvantage is that weather can be more unpredictable. A late winter or an early winter can wipe out a shoulder season. Some shoulder seasons are plagued by precipitation. On the other hand, in some years spring arrives early or fall stays late, extending the shoulder season. So, be flexible and keep an eye on the forecast. If you’re more of a warm-weather person, head for the hills. Southern Indiana can be downright balmy in early spring and late fall, offering a chance to hike trails in a T-shirt while northern Indiana is wrapped in sweaters. Check out properties like Harmonie, Lincoln, O’Bannon Woods, Falls of the Ohio, Charlestown, Clifty Falls, Versailles and Spring Mill state parks. But, if you enjoy—or at least tolerate—cooler temperatures, then northern Indiana has a lot to offer, too. With 23 miles of trails, Chain O’Lakes in Noble County is another northern state park worth visiting outside summer. The park is home to nine quiet kettle lakes separated by low hills that were deposited by glaciers. Hilltop trails offer great views of the lakes. And those views are perhaps best when unobstructed by understory foliage. Year-round outdoorswoman Jules Erwin of Bloomington has advice for anyone hesitant to get out in cooler weather. “Don’t be afraid of it,” she said. “Wear extra layers. Take along an extra pair of dry socks.”

Join us for Waterpark Season! May 26-September 3 Daily admission is just $11 for adults and $8 for youth/seniors.

And, for more spontaneous campers, many sites will remain available from November through April on a firstcome, first-served basis for the day of arrival. Some services will be limited in the winter, and water is typically turned off from November through mid-March or April. If you camp in the spring, you may want to check with the property ahead of time about the availability of modern restrooms and showers since the threat of freezing weather can be unpredictable. Hopefully, you are convinced to visit a state park this spring. And if you are, take a cue from the Meyers. Watch for good weather and be ready. Always be ready.

A TESTAMENT TO INDIANA’S HORSE RACING INDUSTRY BY JEN ROYTZ

Located in the shadows of the Indiana Grand Racetrack and Casino in Shelbyville is the world-class Centaur Equine Diagnostic and Surgical Center, which offers not only the horsemen of the Indiana racing circuit, but horse owners throughout the region, access to medical, diagnostic and emergency care services. The equine hospital is a part of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, and a is a testament to Indiana’s agricultural heritage and the importance of horse racing in Indiana. “The Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital has been a great addition to serve the horse people of Indiana in their equine care needs,” says Mike Smith, Executive Director of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. “We are fortunate to have this quality facility and the cutting edge technology it offers.” Employing more than 10,000 people in the state, Indiana’s horse racing industry makes a $1 billion dollar impact annually and touches all 92 counties in Indiana.

I Centaur Equine SHELBYVILLE

A VISION TURNED REALITY Purdue officially broke ground on the $8.8 million project in October of 2015, but the idea behind the state-ofthe-art equine hospital had been in the works for more than a decade prior, thanks to a number of interested parties, including longtime Indiana THE EQUINE 4DDI DIAGNOSTIC state senator Dr. Bob Jackman, who initially brought the idea up to Purdue College IMAGING SYSTEM of Veterinary Medicine Dean, Dr. Willie Reed. CAN SCAN A HORSE IN “Once we passed the slots bill I was convinced the horseracing industry was going to grow, LESS THAN 30 SECONDS. bringing in more horsemen and horses—Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, everything,” said Jackman, an equine veterinarian who owns Jackman Animal Clinic in Milroy, Ind. “I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Reed soon after he took over as Dean and mentioned to him that I thought the University should consider building an equine hospital between the two tracks because I suspected the quality and number of horses would be increasing due to the new legislation.” The Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital came as a logical compliment to the school’s large and small animal teaching hospitals, which provide hands-on and classroom experience for veterinary students. Purdue has a longstanding history of both benefitting from the success of horseracing in Indiana and pioneering advances in veterinary medicine for the benefit of high performance equine athletes. The University’s large animal hospital was the first to perform arthroscopic surgery on a horse in the 1970s and in 1996 they opened their Equine Sports Medicine Center, which featured a highspeed equine treadmill for diagnostic and research purposes. A DIAGNOSTIC GAME-CHANGER The depth of resources housed at the Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital is robust, both for emergency cases and for those whose appointments can be more scheduled. While its offerings include advanced diagnostic imaging, shockwave therapy, nuclear medicine, regenerative medicine, endoscopic laser surgery and specialized equine orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, the feature that sets them apart more than any other is their standing CT machine. One of only four in the country and the only one in the Midwest, the standing CT can be a diagnostic game-changer for veterinarians. “First and foremost, it is a step up from radiography. The scan itself takes about 27 seconds and with no need for general anesthesia, horses get here and in 15 to 20 minutes they walk in, walk out, done,” said Dr. Timm Gudehus, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at the facility.

traveliN SPRING 2018

LEAD SURGEON A HORSMAN AT HEART Dr. Gudehus, DVM, DACVS, DECVS, is at the helm of the hospital and has a wealth of experience, both as a veterinarian and as a horseman. Growing up in a warmblood riding and breeding family in his native Germany, Gudehus rode show jumpers at the Grand Prix level before attending veterinary school in Germany and completing an internship on the backside of the Munich race track. “Having ridden semi-professionally, I understand more than most probably that this is a business and that every discipline is different. I’ve been afforded the opportunities in my career to work with everything from polo and show jumping to Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing and breeding and the pony or riding horse that is someone’s beloved pet,” said Gudehus. “Even though it’s a business, as a vet and as horsemen you have to have that emotional drive as well, and the day I lose that I should stop being a veterinarian.”

Rivers of Life: Critical Watersheds for Protecting Biodiversity and is considered the gold standard of streams for its biological cleanliness by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. “It’s number 10 on the conservancy list,” says Ellen Boardman, a naturalist aide for the Tippecanoe River State Park. But even more amazingly, for a 225-mile river that snakes through Northwestern Indiana and is probably most celebrated in Pulaski County, The Natural Conservancy writes on their website that the Tippecanoe River is considered by many as one of the more beautiful waterways in the nation. “It’s really historic,” continues Boardman. “The Potawatomi Indians lived along the river and in the late 1600s the French Voyageurs traveling from Montreal, came down the river and traded with the Indians.” Even the name Tippecanoe, which is the Miami Nation word for “buffalo fish,” reflects the area’s vast heritage. Clear, sparkling waters coursing through a lovely bucolic setting are just one of the many attributes of Pulaski County.

traveliN SPRING 2018

Considered the River of Lakes, the Tippecanoe River, fed by 88 natural lakes, flows through Pulaski County past woodlands, pastures and charming villages and towns. “The Tippecanoe is one of the top-10 most important freshwater systems in North America,” Krysten Hinkle, Project Coordinator for the Pulaski County Community Development Commission, tells me. Indeed, I remember the Tippecanoe River when I attended a Girl Scout camp situated near the riverbank just miles from Winamac, the county seat. Of course, my memories are mixed because, sneaking out of our cabins one night, we attempted to swing across the river and I missed my footing as the rope swung back, landing in the algae covered water instead. The plus? We never got caught and I learned to sleep in wet clothing. But that was then. The Tippecanoe River is pristine now. As Hinkle explains, through a long effort of reclamation, it’s now earned a designation from The Nature Conservancy in

ROLLING ON THE RIVER 16 years ago, Connie and Dave Scott decided to buy Riverside Rentals, at the time a small canoe business on the Tippecanoe. “In the beginning we had about 30 canoes,” says Connie. “Business was good, and we bought mor e canoes. Then kayaks became popular and so we got kayaks. After that it was tubes. Now we have 800 to 900 tubes as well as kayaks and canoes and we’re busy throughout the season. In the summer it’s best to make reservations on the weekends to make sure you get a spot as we’re often sold out.” Riverside Rentals offers a variety of river trips including their most popular, a 7-mile canoe/ RIVERSIDE RENTALS kayak trip that takes about three to four hours, raft trips, a two-day trip with an overnight stop half way through at the Tippecanoe River State Park Canoe Campground and a five-mile tube trip. The Tippecanoe River also flows through in the Scotts’ blood. Connie lived on the river when young and Dave spent most of his life on the river. “When he was young they used to canoe for days from Monterey on south,” says his wife. With its clear waters, Boardman says it’s a great fishing river, teaming with small mouth bass, crappie, blue gill, sunfish—and if you’re really, really lucky, you might snag a Northern Pike. Wonderful wildlife abounds and bald eagles nest here as well. The state park offers an array of camping, cabins and a small souvenir shop that I remember from my Girl Scout days. Now the waterway that Dave Scott followed is a designated Canoe Trail connecting Monterey in the north and traveling through the 40-acre Winamac Town Park near the town’s downtown and under the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial bridge, a suspension PULASKI footbridge built in 1923 that’s dedicated COUNTY We live it. to all Pulaski County war You’ll love it. veterans. DOWNTOWN WINIMAC

traveliN SPRING 2018

WINAMAC Downtown Winamac, with its wonderful Indiana historic courthouse square and three-story Romanesque Revival style limestone courthouse dating back to 1894, has a selection of good eating places. Personally, we like One-Eyed Jack’s, in the downtown, and known for their entrees such as ONE EYED JACK’S TENDERLOIN their prime rib with onions, green peppers and mushrooms TIPPY’S PIZZA and also such fish dishes as grilled bass, whitefish and, more uniquely and a lot harder to find on restaurant menus—lightly buttered and fried smelt served with tartar sauce. For the brave—or super hungry—there’s the One-Eyed Jack’s Titanic 2 Handed Tenderloin Challenge. The requirements are simple but arduous. Within an hour’s time span the winner must totally consume a huge five-pound fried

78

tenderloin sandwich and a two-pound bowl of fried tater tots. You’ll need to do a lot of kayaking to work off those calories. Tippy’s (get it—Tippy’s/Tippecanoe), also located in the downtown, is known for their specialty pizzas such as the Fire Out in the Hole—a jalapeno-infused Italian with Louisiana hot sauce and pepper cheese or their signature pie on a crisp crust with house-made pizza sauce and a great blend of mozzarella cheese. “We may be somewhat off the beaten path, but people love us when they discover Pulaski County’s beauty and all it has to offer,” says Hinkle. “It’s what makes us special.”

HERITAGE TRAIL

NORTHEAST INDIANA

Northern Indiana’s

delivers great tastes, Amish culture and adventure

A STROLL THROUGH BONNYVILLE MILL COUNTY PARK, BRISTOL

The Heritage Trail has a little bit of everything, and a lot to offer everyone from foodies to adventure seekers to those looking to slow down and relax. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the Heritage Trail. This 90-mile loop has been rated by the editors of Life magazine as one of America’s top scenic drives. Follow along through Elkhart, Bristol, Middlebury, Shipshewana, Goshen, Nappanee and Wakarusa where you can explore area attractions, vibrant downtowns and rural Amish life.

OLD-FASHIONED GOODNESS Handmade and hand-crafted is not a trend for the Amish. If you’re an early riser, start your day at Dutch Country Market in Middlebury, where you’ll get a peek into the world of noodle-making with Katie Lehman and her family. Try the supersized

traveliN SPRING 2018

cinnamon rolls at Country Lane Bakery or indulge in a slice of Das Dutchman Essenhaus’ 30 varieties of pie. Both can be found in the charming town of Middlebury. Discover why the Amish are known for their woodworking skills. The Schmucker brothers at Homestyle Furniture in Nappanee specialize in hand-crafted furniture. Tour the wood shop at Teaberry Wood Products, Middlebury, where you can witness hand-carved puzzles and beautiful baskets being made.

DON’T MISS THIS Take home a great memory with snapshots from our best selfie spots. Marvel at old-school technology with a demonstration at an historic grist mill at Bonneyville Mill County Park and discover why it’s the most photographed spot in Elkhart County. Let the giant toadstools dwarf over you at Krider World’s Fair Garden in Middlebury. Or explore the urban oasis of Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart for the perfect post by the idyllic pond.

DELICIOUS DESTINATIONS There’s no way you’ll go hungry on the Heritage Trail. For Amish favorites such as roast beef, noodles and mashed potatoes, look no farther than Amish Acres in Nappanee or Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury. Amazing family-owned pizzerias can be found in every city and town, including a “life-changing” pie at Pizzeria Venturi in Goshen. Elkhart’s Gateway Mile offers gourmet fare and fine wine at Artisan while Iechyd Da Brewing Co. serves up craft beer and pizza. Sweet tooths will have no problem finding freshly made treats, from the scrumptious doughnuts at Rise ‘n Roll Bakery in Middlebury to handdipped delights at Olympia Candy Kitchen, Goshen. Get nostalgic with a candy selection from your childhood at the Wakarusa Dime Store or snag a stool at the 1940s soda fountain for a burger paired with a Green River soda at Goshen’s South Side Soda Shop.

NIGHTTIME ENERGY Live entertainment heats up the night with everything from musical theatre to indie concerts. The Lerner Theatre in Elkhart offers a full schedule of touring concerts and comedians while Ignition Music in Goshen has become a favorite with emerging artists. Enjoy live concerts and family friendly theatre productions at the Heritage Hall at Das Dutchman Essenhaus. The historic Bristol Opera House offers award-winning community theatre, and The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee brings the audience to its feet with their exciting Broadway-style musicals.

MARSHALL COUNTY

Great Golf Getaway SWAN LAKE RESORT

From a family-friendly golf course built on a 100-year-old

family farm, to a state-of-the-art golf academy at a high-end resort, Northern Indiana’s Marshall County offers something for golfers of all ages and skill levels. With five outstanding golf destinations, it’s easy to plan a perfect golf getaway.

Swan Lake Resort boasts two courses—the Silver Course

with a shorter, more strategic layout, and the Black Course which provides a “championship” experience. Both courses are described as “in country club condition.” The Golf Academy at Swan Lake is an award-winning, state-of-the-art facility offering personalized, customized private or group instruction, club fitting, and fitness options.

Golfers and non-golfers enjoy this 500-acre resort and its

amenities—swimming pools, dining, and an array of overnight accommodations including a charming hotel, quaint cottages, rustic cabins, and modern villas. Not surprising, the resort offers “stay and play” packages for the golf lover.

Tri-Way Golf Course is known for being one of the

“friendliest” courses in the area, and prides itself on providing a family-friendly golf experience. Built on a family farm that’s been around for more than 100 years, this course offers affordable outings for all ages. Tri-Way has been a family traveliN SPRING 2018

84

front nine holes provide open and gently rolling fairways and greens, while the back nine holes are more challenging with ample trees and water. This golf course is an 18-hole course with a Par 71.

Boasting a full-stocked pro shop, and practice facilities with chipping and putting areas, Pretty Lake Golf Club has a unique course layout that’s difficult enough to be challenging for serious players, but also enjoyable for newcomers. There’s also a driving range with PGA staff available for lessons. The course’s Sand Trap Bar & Grill is the perfect spot to wind down your day, enjoying food and drinks overlooking scenic Pretty Lake. Designed by Pete Dye, Mystic Hills Golf Club opened its doors in 1998, and features 18 holes, with each 9 holes playing drastically different. The front nine exhibits features of a traditional, links-style golf course with minimal trees, rolling terrain and larger greens. The back nine exhibits features of a more modern golf course with plentiful trees, large sand traps, long and narrow greens. The Club is also available for special events, with a 2,400-square-foot “outing” building or 3,000-square-foot club house. They even offer “stay and play” cabins and all-inclusive wedding packages. Woodbury Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole public course featuring 6,533 yards to play from the longest tees for a par of 72. You’ll find a splendid course layout with the front and back nine split equally by a driving range and new practice area. The front nine is fairly open with few trees bordering the holes. The back 9 is a bit more challenging with wooded areas and a few hazards. Woodbury Golf Course truly provides a relaxing round of golf that your whole family can enjoy. A BUSTLING BERG ALONG THE BROOKVILLE ROAD!

Hancock County’s two smallest communities are on the east side of the county. These communities boast a small town and rural flavor that is synonymous with quaint American towns. Wilkinson is the home town of World War I Ace, H. Weir Cook, and the local park bears his name. Shirley was a railroad town that is now making a comeback. It boast several local festivals including the Strawberry Festival and Founders Day. However, the unique structure that is a must see is the Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House. Once located in Wilkinson it was moved to Shirley to be near the Historical Society. This eight sided structure is one of the few left standing in the state, and it is used by the community to host gatherings and other local events.

New Palestine is one of the smaller communities in Hancock County, but benefits from its close proximity to Indianapolis. The US Bike Route 35 runs just west of this community, and many bicyclists and others take a detour through this old German settlement. SummerFest and a Fall Festival are both celebrated in this community along with many other smaller events. A visit to New Palestine would not be complete without a visit to the Frosty Boy, a drive-in restaurant favored by locals and visitors alike. While your there be sure to visit the New Palestine Museum and take a walk (or a drive) over the timbered railroad bridge—a one of a kind in the state.

The success of the comic strip spawned a popular animated TV Show, “Garfield & Friends” which appeared on CBS-TV from 1988 to 1995 and is currently in worldwide syndication. Additionally, Garfield enjoys a healthy product-licensing program whereby nearly 400 manufacturers crank out thousands of products depicting Garfield and the rest of the Gang. Garfield’s vast empire stretches into 111 countries and includes a popular website, www.garfield.com.

MUNCIE

Delaware County, Indiana, is fortunate to be the home of Jim Davis, creator of that famous lasagna eating cat Garfield, who turns 40 years old in June. The feline’s tie to the Hoosier state can be seen in both Delaware and Grant counties where “Garfield Trails” dot the landscape. In Delaware County, a total of 15 statues are displayed at businesses and organizations and, in Grant County, there are a dozen statues placed throughout the downtown area. Both “Trails” provide for great photo opportunities. Garfield was born on the comic pages on June 19, 1978, and was introduced to the world in a mere 41 newspapers. But it quickly became the fastest growing and most widely syndicated comic strip ever. Today, the strip appears in more than 2,400 newspapers and is read by more than 200 million people around the globe.

While enjoying lunch at Little Sheba’s in Historic Richmond, Indiana, don’t be surprised if owner Steve Terzini stops by your table to introduce himself. In fact, on any given day, you’ll see Steve making the rounds, chatting it up with the lunch crowd—most of whom have known each other for years in this charismatic town near the eastern border of Indiana. But as a tourist, you won’t feel like an outsider here; you’ll be welcomed as if you’ve lived here all your life. Such is the personality of Richmond, an area with just 36,000 residents, most of whom are compelled to tell you how proud they are of their city and surrounding county. They’re quick to share information on their first-class, recently renovated museum of art, their eclectic and entertaining collection of shops and eateries in both their Main Street and Historic districts, and to give you “insider tips” on where to find internationally known artisans and their out-of-the way studios throughout Wayne County. One of these spots can be found just off State Route 227; while the postal address is Richmond, the berg is officially traveliN SPRING 2018

known as “Boston.” It’s here you’ll have the pleasure of meeting artists Bill and Jeanne Magaw, a quirky and affable couple whose farm is not only dotted with farm animals, but with large metal sculptures and “wind machines” made with Bill’s own hands. Known as “The Magaws of Boston,” the couple welcome you to their farm to share their artwork, which is also for sale. But don’t be fooled by their small-community roots; the Magaws have sold substantial art pieces as far away as Russia, and their wind machines were purchased by the Chinese government to grace some of their public gardens.

Another must-see in Richmond is its fine art museum, the second oldest art museum in Indiana, and the nation’s only one to

be housed in an active public high school. The Richmond Art Museum, which recently went through a $1.7 million renovation, displays an impressive permanent collection including American Impressionists, Hoosier Group artists including T.C. Steele and William Forsythe, Indiana/Ohio artists, and more. Executive Director Shaun Dingwerth has overseen the museum for more than a decade, and has a passion for the area’s cultural mission. A published author, his newest book, “The Richmond Group Artists,” is available for purchase at the museum. Be sure and ask him to sign a copy for you while you’re there. Richmond residents have rallied behind the wine and brew movement in Indiana. Locally-owned J & J Winery/Noble Order Brewing Company not only produces high-quality beers and wine, but has turned their property into a gathering spot for meals on the deck, weddings, concerts, and other events. You need more than one day to discover all of Richmond’s treasures. While the area offers several overnight lodging options, traveliN SPRING 2018

staying in a local Bed & Breakfast allows you to feel even more at home here. One great option is the Philip W. Smith Bed and Breakfast. When you stay in this Victorian-era inn, owners Kris and Jill Nelson will welcome you with abundant hospitality. Spend some time in Richmond enjoying its delightful attractions, locally-owned boutiques, eateries, wineries, and breweries, but be sure to talk with the locals. They’ll help you understand what truly makes Richmond and Wayne County so special. For more information and to plan your getaway, go to www.visitrichmond.org.

SOUTH BEND – Nicholas Ruse’s childhood memories center around his grandmother’s house in Bay City, Michigan. Specifically, around Grandma’s kitchen, Grandma’s garden, Grandma’s basement with a second kitchen for canning. And most definitely Grandma’s cornbread. It gave him an appreciation of what’s important in the culinary world– quality, freshness, local. “My love for food came from Grandma,” he says. Ruse, now in his early 40s, has taken that early interest and turned it into a vibrant career in the culinary world. He’s the corporate chef at Café Navarre in South Bend. His first job, at 15, was at an A&W. “The girls did the roller-skating and I was a fry cook in the kitchen,” he says. He went on to several other casual restaurants, some chains and some mom-and-pop, and then he joined the Navy to see more of the world. “That was a good experience to get out of a small town,” he says.

He was stationed on an aircraft carrier, as a cook. It was an assignment he’d asked for. “The military helped me learn discipline,” he says. After the service he returned to the Bay City area. But a vacation to Las Vegas— somewhere he’d always wanted to visit—changed his world. A friend of a friend there worked at the Bellagio. The guy gave him a tour of the kitchens, and Ruse was hooked. Within weeks he was working in Olives, a stand-alone restaurant in the Bellagio. His interview there had scored an immediate job offer. “I was enthusiastic,” Ruse says. “I said

Ruse says his favorite months for being in the South Bend area are May through October, because he shops at the Amish produce auction in Wakarusa. “I’m a very seasonal chef,” he says, “and those are the months I absolutely love being here. The Hills are Alive with D i stil l e d S p irit s (an d B e e r)!

BY AUBREY SITZMAN

Sitting high atop a hill in Nashville, Indiana, tucked away in the woods, is Big Woods’ newest venture, Hard Truth Hills Distilling Co. That’s right, this Indiana-based restaurant and brewing company is at it again. Not only have they expanded their drink brand far beyond beer with a lineup of delicious spirits, but they’ve also created a whole destination dedicated to their craft. From learning the Big Woods story and sampling some of their top-notch spirits to savoring their mouthwatering cocktails and taking in a stunning view at the bar, Hard Truth Hills is more than just a place to grab a drink, it’s a unique experience worth checking out. And there’s still more in the works. After all, when you have 325 acres to work with, the possibilities are endless. traveliN SPRING 2018

133

Brew, Wine, Distilleries

It all started way back in 2009 with the original Big Woods restaurant in Nashville’s village, and small-scale craft beer brewing behind the kitchen. Making a tiny 12 gallons at a time (that’s less than one keg), Big Woods and QuaffOn! Brewing Company was up and running, crafting a look, taste, and experience all their own. The momentum just kept going as more restaurants were built, brewing expanded to its own facility, and a distillery was even created—Hard Truth Distilling Co., Big Woods’ exclusive line of liquor, was started in 2015. Featuring gin, rum, and vodka in the beginning, they spiced it up, adding a cinnamon flavored vodka to the repertoire. That’s not all; they also have crafted a truly special agave spirit. Not only is it the first aged product to come from Hard Truth, but it also put them in the Indiana history books as the first distillery to ferment, distill, and sell such a spirit. They are even working on a rye whiskey, bourbon, and wheated bourbon, all of which are still in the aging process, but can be reserved by the bottle for when they’re finished.

Along with all these scrumptious spirits, the Big Woods brand also has created a long list of equally delectable cocktails. Something for every taste, they have all the classics plus several creative concoctions that are uniquely their own. And, you can enjoy them all at the Hard Truth Hills bar. Big Woods’ craft beer is on tap too. Besides unwinding with some drinks at the bar, Hard Truth Hills also offers tours at their Welcome Center. On their Shot of the Truth Tour, not only will you learn the history of the Big Woods/QuaffOn!/ Hard Truth brand, but you’ll also learn a thing or two about Brown County history. Get the inside scoop on the ingredients and process Big Woods uses to make their tasty beer and spirits and do some tasting while you’re at it. And more tours are in the works. You’re likely to notice some major construction going on while you’re up on the Hill and that’s because a brand new production facility is being built…a big one at that. When it’s completed, which should be late spring or early summer, the around 30,000-square-foot facility will be going full speed, distilling all the Hard Truth spirits. Tours of the distillery also will be offered so you’ll be able to see first-hand how it’s done.

traveliN SPRING 2018

Brew, Wine, Distilleries

Along with the production facility, a rack house is on the construction docket too. The future home of Hard Truth’s barrel-aging program, the rack house will provide the perfect space for those whiskeys and bourbons to get better with age. With hundreds of acres to work with, the Big Woods team also is going to add a restaurant atop the Hill. Family friendly and offering spectacular wooded views, Hard Truth Hills’ onsite restaurant is sure to be a special dining experience. Be on the lookout for it to open … hopefully by summertime. Eventually there is going to be a whole trail system too. Imagine being able to enjoy some cocktails before or after a hike as you revel in the beautiful Brown County forest. Soon you’ll even be able to go on an ATV tour of the property. Let an expert driver guide you across the grounds for a little history lesson and a whole lot of adventure. Keeping with the Big Woods way, there’s sure to be other exciting developments as time goes by as well. Head to the Hill and see for yourself … after all, the truth never tasted so good!
