Indiana Motorsports Association [IMA] Enjoy the many types of racing in Indiana The Indiana Motorsports Association [IMA] is pleased to welcome race fans from all around the world for one of the hundreds of races that will take place at one of Indiana’s 51 race tracks in 2012. We are confident you will find Hoosier hospitality across the state while you are at one of our local tracks that host a weekly racing event or at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indy 500. Motorsports is a big part of our state’s economy. Two years ago the IMA researched how many companies from Indiana are involved in the racing industry, and the numbers were astounding: 1,600+ companies, including more than 900 race teams and thousands of indoor jobs. Race teams and manufacturing companies from all over the country have relocated to Indiana in the past 10 years for one simple reason … location, location, location. Drag race teams that used to be based in California realized the time and money they could save if their team was more centrally located, so many of the top NHRA teams set up shops in Brownsburg. Manufacturing companies found Indiana a much better place to call home with the different incentives offered by our state and the local community, as well as having a central location allowing them to service their customers more efficiently. The motorsports industry in Indiana is very much a cottage industry, and that industry thrives because of the quality of the skilled labor force that calls Indiana home. The town of Speedway is bringing new life to the area around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with its redevelopment efforts. The Dallara building is a first-class facility that will house Dallara as well as the IndyFan Experience. Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing will be building a new race shop on Main Street in Speedway, and by the summer you will see three other new buildings being constructed. Main Street Speedway is alive and quickly becoming the place to be. So whether you are going to check out a local short track, the NHRA Mac Tools US Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway or the Brickyard … enjoy the racing in Indiana! COLUMBUS A virtual museum of modern architecture, ranked sixth in the U.S. for architectural innovation and
design by the American Institute of Architects and National Geographic Traveler recently ranked the city 11th out of 109 historic destinations worldwide by National Geographic Society’s Center for Sustainable Destinations. Another example of unexpected architectural treasure in Columbus is the Miller House and Garden which opened to the public in May 2011. KOKOMO Kokomo is part of the Indiana Glass Trail that winds from Columbus to Hamilton County, Anderson and Muncie before continuing on to Kokomo. The trail started with a grant from the Indiana Artisan program, created to attract business to Indiana artists. Indiana Avenue is a powerful version of the American dream through an African-American lens. The Avenue is the historic African-American commercial, entertainment and worship center. Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana, which is 65 miles north of Indianapolis and 126 miles to the southeast of Chicago. Purdue, founded in 1869, was named after the school's benefactor, John Purdue and has approximately 32,660 undergraduate students. The university is best known for the studies it offers in aerospace, such as aeronautics and astronautics. Purdue University has 18 teams including football, basketball, cross country, tennis and wrestling playing in Division I/I-A NCAA teams. It is ranked at #64 on U.S. News and World Report's list of top American universities.
Indiana University Bloomington is the flagship of the IU system and features over 110 academic programs ranked in the top 20 nationwide. The beautiful Indiana limestone campus is composed of 1,933 acres of abundant green space and historic buildings dating to the late 19th century, and sits in the center of Bloomington. IU is best known for its top rated Jacobs School of Music, Kelley School of Business, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and Journalism. The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic University, founded in 1842 by Reverend Edward F. Sorin and located near South Bend, Indiana about 90 miles east of Chicago. Notre Dame currently has approximately 8,350 undergraduate students in attendance and has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report at 19. The university is best known for its chemistry and biochemistry programs and has the longest-running astrophysics lab. The University of Notre Dame's football team has won 11 national championships and can boast seven Heisman Trophy winners.
Ball State University is located in Muncie, Indiana, which is about one hour northeast of Indianapolis. Ball State was founded as a private teacher training school in 1899. Today, Ball State University has approximately 17,080 undergraduate students in attendance. The university's strongest academic programs are in architecture, telecommunications, journalism, business and nursing. Ball State participates in the Mid-American Conference and the NCAA Division I/IA in all Olympic sports with the exception of men's volleyball.

IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban public research university. This 510 acre campus, just west of downtown Indianapolis, is a partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University and was established in 1969. The school colors are Crimson and Gold, taking one color from each IU and Purdue, however the mascots are unique to this campus, named Jinx and Jaws. The 30,000 students at this
campus have over 250 undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees from both universities to choose from including the first Ph.D. program in Informatics in the United States. Many Hoosiers find IUPUI to be an ideal campus to earn a graduate or professional degree, in fact the population of these students is the highest among all campuses
home to the Milan Miracle, the memorable 1954 victory of tiny Milan High School over the much larger Muncie Central. The film Hoosiers, loosely based on that event, used Hinkle Fieldhouse and the memorable voices of original announcers Hilliard Gates and Tom Carnegie. Butler’s urban location gives students a wide range of internship opportunities and easy access to cultural, recreational and athletic events. Butler University College of Business Administration [CBA] placed 63rd in the Bloomberg Business Week ranking of the best U.S. undergraduate business programs for 2010. Butler CBA received an “A” grade for teaching quality and tied for 13th in Academic Quality ranking, beating out all other Indiana-ranked schools.

The Center for Life Learning is offering a weekend watercolor conference, September 21–23, at the beautiful French Lick and West Baden Resort. Registrations will be taken through September 15. Mother Nature can provide the kind of fun that you’ll never find on television or through a video game Indiana is an outdoors paradise. You might not realize it at first. The steel mills of the lake shore and the seemingly endless oceans of agriculture can cloud a person’s perception. But once you’re off the beaten path, deep in the hills and hollers of the Hoosier National Forest, or ankle deep in a sand dune, you’ll start to realize natural treasures abound in our small Midwest state. You just have to look a little harder. The crown jewel of Indiana’s array of outdoor opportunities is our state park system. Each of Indiana’s 25 state parks is unique in its settings and offerings, yet consistently invites outdoor enthusiasts into nature with opportunities to enjoy time spent outdoors. From riding the award-winning mountain bike trails at Brown County, to canoeing a stretch of Sugar Creek through Turkey
Run, to taking a dip in Lake Michigan at the Dunes, visitors to any of Indiana’s state parks are sure to find a way to relax and unwind. In the southern half of Indiana, public land abounds. Between the Hoosier National Forest and the Indiana State Forest System, there are well over 500,000 acres of public land that is accessible for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and more. Many overlook these natural lands because of lack of amenities, but for those souls who seek solitude, these forests are where it abounds. Yet you don’t have to trek miles deep into Morgan-Monroe to find outdoor enjoyment in Indiana. Surely, there’s a place to fish or take a nature walk within a couple of miles of home. Or if thrills are what you’re after, then consider the zip lines around Nashville or off-road riding at Redbird State Riding Area near Linton. No matter what you’re looking for in the outdoors, chances are Indiana has an option for you. We have what some locals call mountains, and we definitely have mountain lions. Indiana is wild within. The center was founded in the 1970s by Professor Thubten Jigme Norbu, eldest brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. THE SPICE OF LIFE Teaching others eventually led Davis to found the Blue Stone Folk School in Noblesville, an institution that teaches and raises awareness of traditional arts. As he worked, however, Davis became increasingly aware of how expensive they were to build. Davis is an artist, a musician, a naturalist, a woodworker and a self-proclaimed scrounger. With the help of skill, imagination and found objects, he’s happy to create whatever he can. And so one winter, when funds were low but the need to create wasn’t, he began carving birds.
Ninety years ago, Marion-Kay Spices was founded when Marion “Bill” Summers set out to sell his vanilla extract door-to-door in St. Louis. Sales quickly took off, public relations coordinator Lisa Morrison says, and soon he was also selling his offerings through local churches and mailorder operations. Toward the late 1940s, Summers moved his spice company to Brownstown, where he had acquired a vacant factory. There, he built the Marion-Kay headquarters, which still stands today, complete with a gift shop and a museum. “It’s literally like walking into a time machine,” Morrison says of the spice factory. “All the old memorabilia and advertising that was original to the 1940s is still there. It’s really a unique facility.” By the time Summers moved his company to Indiana, he had begun adding spices to his line of offerings, and what “truly catapulted his company,” Morrison says, was his friendship with Colonel Harland Sanders of the growing Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant chain. In 1965, Summers and Sanders worked together to develop the custom 11-spice recipe that the colonel used on his popular fried chicken.

When asked to choose a favorite spice, Kordell is quick to respond. “Garlic pepper,” he says, “I use that daily.” He says he also likes Hot Spice Madgic from the J.R. Mad’s line of spices under the company brand. But, if you hear him tell it, his personal preferences don’t matter much. He stands behind them all. “We tend to buy the best raw materials from around the world,” he says. “We stay with the quality that our grandfather and my father established. There are no fillers or preservatives. Our products are pure.”
A teacher at the Indianapolis Public School’s Key Community School, Davis was on vacation from school when he found he had no extra money to start a new project. “It was Christmas break, and I’d spent all my money on Christmas,” he says. “I had nothing to do, and I started carving birds from scraps around the shop. People loved them.” They loved them so much, in fact, that he was inspired to carve more, and eventually he found that he loved the process of carving birds as much as he did building musical instruments. BIRD SONGS Geoff Davis has been completing woodworking projects as long as he can remember, but it was his love of music—and his craftsmanship of ukuleles—that eventually led him to carving birds. Approximately 15 years ago, the Indiana artisan received a fellowship to go to Hawaii to learn to build ukuleles. When he brought his newfound craft back to his Hamilton County home, friends and acquaintances also wanted to learn to build the musical instruments.

INDIANA But one night, almost by accident, Wells realized just how much she was missing out on by not being more involved. “Years ago, I was flipping through the TV channels, and I stopped on PBS. They were in the middle of a [Dale] Chihuly special. My heartbeat sped up. I got so excited. I thought why don’t I know about this? Why have I never heard of him? I just fell in love with his work. That’s what led to my starting the alliance. It was fate that I turned that on.” “I’m so passionate about it [glass art],” she says. “I love it, so I started looking for people around Indiana to form a group.” CHIHULY
the Blue Stone Folk School. Since, he has built hundreds of birds on commission or for local art shows and retail outlets, like Homespun: Modern Handmade in Indianapolis. His new craft has given him reason to spend more time outdoors, studying his subject matter, something he says he always loved to do anyway. “I spend lots of time in the field, and I hope that’s conveyed in the work that I do,” Davis says. “I was a passive birdwatcher before, and I liked to be outside, but now birds have become my focus.” Davis regularly photographs the birds that he sees, using them for his later artistic inspiration, and he also blogs about his outdoor experiences. “Every bird has a story,” he explains. “I collect those stories. I write them on the blog. Then I carve in response to those stories.” 50littlebirds.com
GLASS ACT
This year, she and the alliance will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the development of studio art glass in America. To do so, the group is hosting more than a dozen glass art events around the state. The alliance already hosts two big events each year, Wells says. One, the Hot Glass Infusion Weekend, takes place each spring and attracts several hundred fans. In the fall, a juried exhibition of the best of Indiana shows off the state’s rich talent, which includes the likes of Greg Thompson, who creates architectural glass installations, and Ben Johnson, a Cicero artist who has won best of show for the past couple of years at the event, Well says. As part of the anniversary celebration, the alliance is adding extra exhibitions and historical presentations to the regular schedule. At least for 2012, then, thanks to her efforts and those of her peers, Wells won’t have to travel far to get her fix of glass art.

Judy Wells was a frustrated collector of glass art for years before she decided to do something about it. “I was having to travel around the country to attend glass events just to get exposure to artists and collectors,” she says. “I used to take two or three trips a year to different parts of the U.S., which is originally how I was learning.”
And find people, she did. In 2008, Wells incorporated the Indiana Glass Arts Alliance and set about earning a 501[c]3 designation for it to become a nonprofit arts educational organization. Since, she has helped to grow the alliance by promoting local and regional artists and their works, as well as informing collectors and budding enthusiasts of the glass arts available to them.

Our Hoosier state is quietly but steadily increasing its renewable energy industry’s visibility. Traveling through the Northwest corner of the state, along Interstate 65 or US 41, one realizes that we are beginning the transition to alternatives to coal- produced electricity. Fact is, there will be no turning back now, and less reliance on fossil fuels will be the order of business. Wind and solar energy both will provide greater assistance to coal generated electricity for Indiana within a very short timeframe.

Indiana is beginning to experience what some other parts of the country see as important components to a healthy economy, which is that renewables provide jobs for installers, project developers, systems designers, salespersons, shippers, and financial supporters. Across the nation, solar energy supports over 100,000 jobs, including every state in the union. Solar power creates jobs, improves competiveness, bolsters security, and reduces harmful pollution, and 94% of Americans think it is important to develop a
domestic solar industry. The last two years saw 41 new US solar manufacturing facilities begin operations. All that is a pretty good report, but better yet, solar is more affordable than ever, dropping 50% in cost in 2011, nationally. Here at home in Indiana, with respect to solar photovoltaic systems [PV], and solar hot water systems [solar thermal], larger installations may draw attention, but many smaller installations may go unnoticed. It might surprise the casual observer to find that the Emmet Bean Federal Building near Indianapolis is home to a solar performance testing center with 1.8 megawatts of solar installed. That is over 6,000 solar modules on a single building roof! Project startup for the Indianapolis Airport solar farm [10 megawatts] may begin soon, and there are some large solar installations in planning stages in Northern Indiana. Indiana is also home to the first prison installation of a solar hot water system in the Midwest at Wabash Valley Correctional in Carlisle.
These larger solar systems give encouragement for broader adoption of renewable energy, but the numerous small systems on homes and businesses across the state provide the distributed generation consistent with energy independence that is the goal of many system owners. So, if solar production of energy is such a good thing, how do we Growing awareness get more of it? Two of the state’s publicly owned utilities—NIPSCO and IPL—have enacted voluntary feed-in-tariff programs which appear to be very well received by customers wanting to install solar systems that will generate enough electricity that excess will be sold back to the utility for a profit to the installer customer. These feed-in-tariff programs are modeled more or less on programs that exist in over 40 countries and provinces across the globe, and feed-intariff programs are the quickest way to rapidly grow a solar industry. Germany and Ontario, Canada are excellent examples of feed-in-tariff programs that have resulted in dramatic ramping up of solar and wind within a short timeframe.

Growing awareness of how we produce and use energy in Indiana will no doubt help all the renewable energy generation technologies gain ground in our state. There are groups in Indiana that have formed with the objective of promoting broader adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency. At the state level, The Indiana Renewable Energy Association is a collection of industry advocates, businesses, and stakeholders who work to provide information and encourage education of renewable issues. We have an excellent, active grassroots group in Bloomington, Southern Indiana Renewable Energy Network [SIREN], that exemplifies what can happen when motivated persons come together. The SIREN group recently worked with local government to acquire a grant to install a 50 kilowatt solar PV installation on the County Government Center.

Long term viability of renewable energy generating technologies, and a strong, job producing alternative energy industry can be an important part of a healthy economy for Indiana, a clean energy economy. Staying focused and growing a startup industry will require continued long term vision on the part of both renewable energy companies and informed citizens. Indiana has the beginnings of an effort to provide solar and wind manufacturing jobs and all the construction, installer, and service jobs that will go along with it. Let’s commit to solar power now.

IU Art Museum's Art on Tap IU Art Museum's first fundraiser features a fine selection of local beers, food, and art The Indiana University Art Museum extends an invitation to its inaugural fundraiser, Art on Tap, set for Saturday, April 14, from 5:30-9:00 p.m. The museum's outdoor Sculpture Terrace will serve as the backdrop for an evening celebration bringing together local microbreweries and the IU Art Museum's world-class art collection. This "must-attend" event of the spring will offer guests an opportunity to sample a variety of locally crafted beers and view beer-themed artwork in the galleries including an ancient Egyptian brewery model dating back to 1991-1782 BC! Beer will be provided by Bloomington Brewing Company, Cutters Brewing Company, and Upland Brewing Company. Oliver Winery will be on hand serving samples of their hard cider, and nonalcoholic beverages also will be available. Gourmet food pairings will be provided by One World Catering and Happy Pig Street Food. Admission to the event includes beer tastings, food, and live music and entertainment by the Vallures and Kali Ma Fire Troupe. Twentieth-century artist's paintings and drawings range in style from geometric abstraction to Abstract Expressionism This spring, the Indiana University Art Museum hosts Tranquil Power: The Art of Perle Fine, a traveling exhibition devoted to an important, but not well known, twentieth-century abstract artist. Despite receiving positive recognition for her work during her lifetime, Perle Fine, like many female artists, has been largely overshadowed by her male counterparts, giants of modern art like Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian. Fine’s paintings and drawings range in style from geometric abstraction to Abstract Expressionism, and they evince her love of experimentation with artistic media. Born in Boston, Perle Fine [1905–1988] enrolled in illustration and graphic design courses at the city’s School of Practical Art before moving to New York City in the late 1920s. In New York, Fine became active in avant-garde artistic circles, and in 1936, she joined the organization known as American Abstract Artists. Through this group, she met artists such as the great Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, whose austere geometric grids are echoed in many of her works. Fine’s own artistic sensibilities were developed thanks in part

The Art of Contemporary Glass at Minnetrista Showcasing a collection of some of the best contemporary glass art Artists from across the country and their works of glass art will be featured in a unique exhibit at Minnetrista. In partnership with The Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass at Ball State University, GLASS: A Juried Art Show 2012 opens May 12. The exhibit is focused on portraying the breadth and range of glass in contemporary contexts of craft, sculpture, and mixed media art—GLASS will showcase a collection of some of the best contemporary glass art. The history of glass in Delaware County dates back to the Ball family relocating its glass manufacturing business from Buffalo, NY,
sculpture, and mixed media art
to Muncie, IN, in 1887. Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing took advantage of the abundance of natural gas during the gas boom and went on to become America’s best known and largest manufacturer of canning jars. One hundred years later, Minnetrista was established on the site of one of the Ball family homes. GLASS: A Juried Art Show 2012 celebrates East Central Indiana’s glass heritage. Vice President of Visitor Experience, Rebecca Holmquist said, “We [Minnetrista] are
Katherine Gray, juror for GLASS, has exhibited her own work, written about glass, curated several exhibitions, and taught workshops around the world. Her work may be found in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Museum of Glass, and the Museum of American Glass. Currently, Katherine is an assistant professor in Glass at California State University, San Bernardino, CA. The winning artist will be awarded a purchase prize, and the artist’s selected work will become part of the permanent collection of the Ball State Museum of Art decorative arts collection. All of the accepted works for the show will be showcased in the GLASS catalog. GLASS: A Juried Art Show 2012 at Minnetrista will be open May 12–August 12 and is supported in part by a grant from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. Come enjoy amazing works of glass! Prospective brides treated to a bountiful mix of new concepts, color schemes and choices Bridal trends for 2012 highlight many colorful and even unusual concepts for floral design and décor. The Bloomington Bridal Expo recently featured many of these creations. Prospective brides were treated to a bountiful mix of new concepts, color schemes and choices. Floral design studios such as Bloomington’s ARTFUL BLOOMS featured bouquets enhanced with twigs and feathers not typically seen in bridal arrangements. Floral offerings of deep purple and green, delicious peach and yellow, and even bright jewel tones, were mixed very attractively with contrasting feathers and other natural materials. And, beautiful choices abound. CATHY TEETERS, also of Bloomington, lends sophisticated elegance to her arrangements by using shades of silver, decorated pedestals and other architectural pieces to highlight her work. For the budgetconscious bride, Owen County’s HARVEST MOON FLOWERS offers three acres of traditional and non-traditional floral choices. Plants, pods and a variety of herbs such

Additionally, when the museum’s Interpretation and Education committee was designing the Beyond the Classroom program, the museum’s Study Trip program, they unanimously agreed that a collector photo car would be an ideal experiential teaching tool.

An INTERACTIVE CAR EXHIBIT adds another dimension to the museum’s educational programs. The car, a 1916 Dodge Brothers Touring car, allows visitors to sit in it and experience a historic automobile and get their pictures taken. It’s an art event! © CAROL HEDIN In honor of the Bloomington area Brain Extravaganza, which will be held from May until October, Bloomington’s downtown Gallery Walk is hosting “Night of 100 Brains,” on Friday, May 4, from 5:00pm–8:00pm. Brain-inspired art by local school children will be displayed by 8 of the 9 member galleries of the Gallery Walk along with their regular May exhibits. On the sidewalk outside the ninth gallery, visitors will get a chance to take photos of themselves next to a giant fiberglass brain—one of many to be decorated and placed all over downtown Bloomington and the IU campus. Craft Beer Festival Returns to Woolery Stone Mill The Brewers of Indiana Guild presents the second Bloomington Craft Beer Fest Indiana’s growing love affair with craft beer will be on display in a uniquely Hoosier setting on June 9 when the Bloomington Craft Beer Festival returns to the historic Woolery Stone Mill. Indiana brewers from around the state will be joined by a select group of out-of-state breweries. The number of breweries in Indiana has more than doubled in the last five years, and more are on the way. This unprecedented growth is all the more remarkable during a time when other businesses are struggling to survive. Many credit the “buy local” movement as influencing consumers’ support of microbreweries, most of which are small, locally owned businesses.

The Bloomington event is the newest of three festivals produced by the Brewers of Indiana Guild, a state-wide trade association representing all of Indiana’s 50-plus microbreweries. Winterfest, sold-out in each of the last two years, brought 3,500 people to the Indiana State Fairgrounds in January. The 17th annual Microbrewers Festival, which attracts more than

6,000 people, will take place in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis on July 14. Following its debut last year, the Bloomington Craft Beer Festival is expected to be an annual event. The festival will be held on the property surrounding the historic Woolery Stone Mill at 2200 W Tapp Road, on the southwest side of Bloomington. In addition to sampling craft beer, guests will enjoy the best that Bloomington has to offer: live music and a panoply of food from local restaurant favorites [available for purchase] and in a stunning setting only Bloomington can offer. The Woolery Mill, site of a former quarry, was featured in the classic movie “Breaking Away.”
Limited parking is available at the Woolery Mill for $10, but a free shuttle will be offered from a convenient Bloomington location [TBA]. The Brewers of Indiana Guild encourages responsible drinking. Attendees are encouraged to bring designated drivers, for whom admission is $10 [and includes free parking, unlimited soft drinks and bottled water]. The entire venue will be limited to adults 21 and over—drinkers and designated drivers—and ID will be carefully checked for each person at the gate. The Brewers of Indiana Guild is proud to present the second Bloomington Craft Beer Fest from 3pm–7pm June 9. Miller House And Garden Modernist National Historic Landmark open for public tours Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley.

Members of the Miller family donated the house and gardens, along with many of its original furnishings, to the Indianapolis Museum of Art [IMA] in 2009. Additionally, members of the Miller family and the IrwinSweeney-Miller Foundation have donated $5 million to establish an endowment for the house and surrounding grounds. The IMA is working with the Columbus Area Visitors Center to offer public guided tours of the house and gardens beginning in May 2011. Visitors can purchase tickets online. Miller House and Garden is owned and cared for by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Tours at Miller House and Garden are made possible through the Columbus Area Visitors Center.

Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing

the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens, its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. The Miller House was the first designated National Historic Landmark listed with a still-living landscape architect that also was still occupied by its original owners at the date of its designation. “Miller House showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers and we believe that it’s important to preserve this internationally known jewel in the Columbus, Indiana, community,” said Maxwell L. Anderson, the Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. “We look forward to making this significant Modernist landmark available to the public.”

Experience gracious hospitality that has existed here for the last century and a half It began with the water, the healing mineral water springs. Those springs became a gathering place for animals, Indians, French fur trappers, travelers and seekers of the water. For more than 150 years French Lick and West Baden have been places to rest, be healed and be refreshed. Two grand hotels, located a mile apart, each having mineral springs on the property, were built for guests who came to take advantage of the waters. Imagine trains, some with private cars, filled with travelers from distant cities arriving on railroad spurs built to the front door of each hotel. Once here, the visitors were healed by the waters, relaxed in the spas, played golf, walked the trails, enjoyed fine food prepared by talented chefs and took excursions into the countryside. Gambling was illegal in Indiana, however, it flourished here and provided glamorous night life for the wealthy.
The Town Green is located where the famous Brown Hotel and Casino once stood. It is the focal point for the many festivals that take place during the year and offers an array of new shops on the street level. The Maple Street eateries and shops extend along the brick street from the Green. The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus that wintered here from 1915 to 1924 is here once again as a diorama in the new French Lick West Baden Museum, where unique exhibits tell the history of the valley. Today visitors to French Lick and West Baden are able to experience the same gracious hospitality that has existed here for the last century and a half.

Pluto Water and Sprudel Water were bottled from the local springs and were touted to cure almost every disease known to man. There were stables with fine horses and horsemen of great repute, a requirement of discerning guests of a century ago. To stay in the hotels and travel to the Kentucky Derby was considered to be living the high life. The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, one of the largest of the day, wintered here for 10 years, giving the area another claim to fame. Can you imagine being at the Donald Ross Golf Course when the great Walter Hagen won the 1924 PGA Championship? Here is a look at how the past has become modern. The two grand hotels, French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs, have recently undergone a $500 million restoration and now shine like jewels in the valley of the springs.
Guests of today have an opportunity to follow the same paths as those of long ago. Tee off on the modern Pete Dye golf course and the vintage Donald Ross and Tom Bendelow golf courses, making this the only spot in the country where golfers can play all three. Ride the train over the same tracks that once brought guests from Chicago, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis and St. Louis. Instead of taking the healing mineral waters, relax on a pontoon boat while touring Patoka Lake. A water park and hotel overlooking the towns offer families other opportunities for fun in the water. Stables and horseback riding are still offered by the hotels along with new motorbike trails through the woods in view of the golf courses. Two famous artists of the last century were the Cross brothers, Henry, the painter, and Ferdinand, the limestone sculptor. The arts created today are wood carving, doll art, pottery, jewelry making, painting, lapidary, crafted recycled materials, yarn making and photography. As always, the quality of the artisan product is great, and the price is fair.
