Publisher’s Letter
I love that our summer issue hits smack-dab in the middle of a busy—and warm—travel season, giving us the opportunity to showcase Indiana’s great outdoor experiences. Our cover story on local public parks will have you packing your picnic basket, hiking shoes, and flip-flops as you’ll learn about some incredible, and most-often free, destinations. Kayaking? Check. Surfing? Check. Outdoor concerts? Check.
In our arts feature, we highlight hands-on art activities, festivals, and shops where you can purchase uncommon supplies and beautifully-crafted pieces. You’ll read about where to watch artists at work, and also where to shop in your pajamas. We hope you’ll be inspired to celebrate Indiana art this summer.
There was a time in Indiana when local breweries, wineries, and distilleries simply made products for consumption. But today, many of these businesses have become road trip-worthy destinations. Special events, concerts, and chef-driven food menus are all part of the draw, and are included in our story, “Sip and Savor.”
Also in this issue, you’ll learn about adventures in Parke County. Many people are aware of their annual Covered Bridge Festival, but we want to make sure you know about their yearround offerings, like award-winning hiking areas, fine dining restaurants, lakes, and unique overnight accommodations. Want to spend the night in a historic jail cell? You can do just that at the Old Jail Inn in Rockville.
And, as a special treat, we’ve inserted a 16-page publication from the Indiana Foodways Alliance that will help guide you on your summer culinary trail adventure.
And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com, for even more trip ideas.
Happy and safe travels!

Here’s a riddle for you: What do wearing shorts, eating ice cream, playing Frisbee or catch, making water balloons, swimming and grilling hotdogs all have in common?
The answer is that they are among the many things you can do to have fun at an Indiana community park.
Taking the family for such an outing to relax and unwind has long been a summer pastime that ranks high in people’s memories, and our state has many parks that offer all kinds of amenities – including plenty of places to play in the water.
“Parks are an integral part of every community,” said Jylian Riches, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation marketing and communications director. “Each of our parks in Carmel offers a completely unique experience for park visitors – from immersing yourself in nature to experiencing out-of-this-world play features –our parks are home to active and passive recreational opportunities, something for everyone.”
Her city has 15 parks and four greenways. Central Park is the ultimate place to go for outdoor recreation, with 159 acres to explore, native prairies and a waterpark. West Park , meanwhile, is the place to commune with nature by way of a prairie maze and pond boardwalks.
Promenade Park in Fort Wayne connects the city to eight miles of riverfront along three rivers that meet downtown. The park features a kids’ canal, ping pong and corn hole games, a tree canopy trail, porch swings, river access and trails that have been designed to be welcoming and accessible to people of all abilities.
Folks in La Porte can also enjoy a good splash with several of their parks located on lakes. Fox Memorial Park on Clear Lake has a skatepark, walking trails and an amphitheater for summer concerts. Soldiers Memorial Park has a lake beach with lifeguards and a playground, and Lindewald Park, the city’s first, invites you to “enjoy the lake life.”

The lucky dwellers in Logansport have France Park , where they can take part in hikes through natural beauty, swim or scuba dive in an abandoned quarry, fish in Lake Elzbeck, camp and play disc golf.
Crown Point maintains 26 parks, including Bulldog Park . Located one block west of a vibrant downtown, this park offers community rooms, an open-air pavilion, fire pits, an outdoor amphitheater, a splash pad in the summer and a hockey rink during the winter. It is also the place to go for
summer concerts, the weekly farmers market and the weekly car cruise.
Valparaiso’s Creekside Park is home to a network of trails that have soft surfaces for hiking, walking and biking. While at Creekside, be sure and check out Trailyard, a destination of experiences offering a full-service bike shop and Outpost, restaurant and bar, outdoor patio, and coffee shop. Central Park Plaza is near downtown eateries, so leave the picnic basket at home this time and pick up something tasty on your way to alfresco fun.

Bring your binoculars when you come to the Coffee Creek Preserve in Chesterton so you can watch the bird migrations in spring and fall. Hike over 157 acres of woodland and wetlands, catching sight of the whitetail deer who make their home here or a salmon swimming upstream to spawn.
The star of Winamac Town Park is the Veterans Memorial Swinging Bridge, which links the town with the park and honors veterans from all wars. A new addition this year is colored lights. But there’s more to see and do, too – such as basketball, tennis/pickleball and volleyball, multiple art pieces to see and walking trails – all on a peninsula said to be a former Potawatomi campground.
Wolf Lake Park in Hammond offers kayaking, boating, paddleboarding and fishing. Or use the pedestrian trail to discover the Pavilion at Wolf Lake for a concert and the Wolf Lake Aquatic Play Center for children 12 and younger.

There are 20 city parks in Warsaw, but perhaps the most notable is the Winona Lake Limitless Park and Splash Pad. The park is so named because it is accessible to people of all abilities and ages. It sits on Winona Lake near the Village of Winona, so it’s just a short walk to ice cream and candy treats. Here also for your use are a beach, grassy field for play and basketball court.
In Wabash, Friendship Hill is another inclusive playground that was created for all ages and all abilities. In fact, it’s one of the largest inclusive playgrounds in the Midwest. Here you’ll find slides, ropes, seesaws, swings, and climbs,
which are safe to enjoy for all kids.

The Parklands of Jasper is a 75acre major urban renewal endeavor turning a private 9-hole golf course and woodlands into a park with two miles of walking trails, three ponds all connected by elevated pathways, two water cascades, 25 acres of woods, and more. There’s even a musical playground. The Huntingburg City Park is home to the area’s public swimming pool and splash pad, along with youth baseball and softball fields. It offers playground equipment, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, multiple shelter houses, a walking/bike path, and is home to League Stadium.
A story about parks in Indiana wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the 24 remarkable state parks. At one, O’Bannon Woods State Park , the good news this year is that Wyandotte Caves are once again open for tours. Kim Marcum, director of business development and retail operations for Indiana State Parks, said you’re

guaranteed to “make memories naturally” at whichever one you go to. And one of the best ways to experience these places is to stay at one of the park inns.
“A stay at an Indiana State Park inn puts you right in the middle of all of the picturesque beauty of our state parks,” Marcum said. “Our hotels provide a comfortable and friendly place to gather, a place to dine on delicious Hoosier favorites and many times are located just steps from a scenic trail.”
Indiana boasts three national parks, too – Indiana Dunes in Porter, Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City and the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park , also in history-rich Vincennes. This is a greenspace along the Wabash River with the largest national memorial west of Washington, D.C., inside it and inside that a statue of Clark.
“It is the heart of Indiana history,” said Ranger Joseph Herron.

story by KATIE ABEL
Nestled in the heart of Northwest Indiana, Valparaiso is just 15 miles south of the Indiana Dunes National Park and is brimming with community parks that provide endless recreation and entertainment for Valpo residents and visitors alike.
1918 marks the official establishment of Valpo’s first community park – Kirchhoff Park – and over a century later, Valpo boasts 952 acres of parkland with 22 park facilities, including a dog park, two golf courses, mountain bike trail, splash pad, botanical garden, and much more.
With 24 playgrounds, 28 athletic fields, 23 miles of paved pathways, and 14 miles of off-road trails, there is something for everyone to enjoy at all Valparaiso parks. Central Park Plaza is the highlight of historic downtown Valpo, comprising of the Northwest Health Amphitheater and a splash pad (and iceskating rink during winter), and is home to some of Valpo’s best events – the Valparaiso Market , Summer Concert Series, Valparaiso Wine Festival, Valpo Night Ride, Popcorn Festival, Valpo Brewfest, Fall Harvest Festival, and more.
Another signature park is the horticultural marvel Ogden Botanical Gardens. Home to a Japanese garden and over four acres of flowers and greenery, this colorful park has trails, streams, bridges, koi ponds, and a tea house.
Fairgrounds Park, site of the Porter County Fair for many years until its move to the Porter County Expo Center, includes a walking track, softball fields, playground, functional fitness equipment, and is the future home to a state-of-the-art skatepark. Just down the street is the fully accessible Samardzija Field at Tower Park , an allweather turf youth baseball field renovated and dedicated by MLB pitcher and former Valpo resident Jeff Samardzija.
Founded in 1961, Rogers Lakewood Park features 122 acres and includes a

championship caliber disc golf course, fishing on Loomis and Spectacle Lakes, and boat rentals and a kayak launch on Loomis Lake. The Fall Classic Fishing Derby in September and Halloween Howl Fest in October wrap up a season packed with fun at this iconic Valpo park.
And last but certainly not least, ValPlayso is Valpo’s epic playground park for all ages. Originally designed and built in 1994 by community members, the playground was then enhanced and rebuilt for its 20-year anniversary in 2014. Over the course of one week, 500 community volunteers gathered to rebuild the fully accessible next generation version of the playground, and today ValPlayso remains an essential part of the Valparaiso experience for both residents and visitors.

Madison County’s Storied Public Parks
story by CHERYL SHANK
Unlike many counties who boast one major city surrounded by small towns, Madison County is home to four cities: Anderson, Alexandria, Elwood, and Pendleton with surrounding small towns. And they all have one thing in common: their beautiful public parks.
Anderson’s Shadyside Memorial Park has been a mainstay for families who enjoy outdoor recreation. It has two lakes, watersports with fishing, kayaking, and paddleboats available and all for free. Paved walking trails follow the lakefronts. The terraced garden with its Asian influence is a must-see, and Veterans’ Commons Amphitheatre hosts many concerts and celebrations. Playgrounds abound and there are plenty of places for family picnics and reunions.
Alexandria’s Beulah Park on Friday
afternoons finds the Alexandria Farmers and Artists Market where live music accompanies visitors as they shop for a variety of items. Home to the Madison County 4H Fair in July, the park is a natural and friendly setting for festivals and fairs, with its well-appointed exhibit halls and spacious wooded grounds.
Elwood’s Callaway Park has seen its share of history. Native son, Wendell Wilkie, made his Presidential candidacy acceptance speech here and annually, Elwood’s history of glass manufacturing during the 1890s Gas Boom is celebrated with the Elwood Glass Festival. It’s a true quintessential city park.
In southern Madison County is lovely Pendleton Falls Park situated at the Falls on Fall Creek. A new playground will be the children’s favorite. The pond with its iconic stone
lighthouse is an ideal setting for people to pause and take in the scene. Trails extend through the woods and along the shallows of the creek, and festivals and events throughout the year make the park the centerpiece of the community.
Chesterfield’s Millcreek Sprayground offers a fun place to splash in water and Makepeace Park hosts many of the town’s celebrations. Lapel’s Brookside, Memorial and Woodward Parks have everything from a splashpad to a skate park, to ball fields. Markleville’s Community Park is home to many community gatherings, most famously the Markleville Jamboree, and Frankton’s Jefferson Park is a focal point of the town and its families.

Make Raptor Days your Next Adventure
The Dwight R. Chamberlain Raptor (rehabilitation) Center is located at Hardy Lake and is the only Indiana Department of Natural Resources property with a raptor rehabilitation center. It is in honor of Mr. Chamberlain, who was a wellrecognized conservationist, a local Scott County resident and considered one of the nation’s leading authorities on crows and ravens. In the 1960s, Mr. Chamberlain recorded common crows to classify and understand the functions of their calls. He found at least eleven distinct calls, known as vocalizations and could determine the intricate vocal cues they used in fighting, feeding and social interactions. He could also identify the signals of dispersal and hunger, plaintive calls made by dying crows and secretive courtship calls.
In 1968, he was featured on the children’s television program “Captain Kangaroo” accompanied by his raven, named Rolf, who had a minor speaking part. In the 1970s, Mr. Chamberlain made a television appearance on “To Tell the Truth,” as an authority on
crows and ravens. Locally, he was a consultant to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and worked as a naturalist at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, near his home in Scott County, Indiana. Mr. Chamberlain, who began his career as a banker, changed course to enlighten the public about the complexity of ravens, owls and other birds of prey species.
We invite you to experience The Dwight R. Chamberlain Raptor Center that accommodates injured and orphaned birds for the purpose of rehabilitation and release, cares for injured birds of prey (raptors) and educates visitors about Indiana’s hawks, owls, falcons, vultures and eagles. There are twelve permanently disabled birds that call the center home and are used for educational programming. Mark your calendar for Hardy Lake’s Raptor Day on September 30, 2023. This is the only day visitors are allowed to tour this amazing facility! See you there!

Spend Time Outdoors in Chesterton
Spend a summer afternoon in Chesterton, Ind., and chances are you’ll leave having happily spent a few dollars, on little gorgeous things, tasty things, even hoppy or proofy things.
But here’s an idea: Pack a picnic lunch, leave cash and cards at home, and enjoy Chesterton on the cheap.
For exactly $0.00 you can make a full day of it and have a blast.
Bringing the kids? Get them warmed up at Dogwood Park’s elaborate playground installation, featuring climbing, sliding, crawling, and overhead components as well as inclusive equipment for children of all abilities to enjoy. Now get them cooled down at Chesterton Park’s hugely popular splash pad, with its three- and four-bucket tilts, an arch, an umbrella, and 30 separate water jets.
Pickleball anyone? Don’t forget your
paddles, because the Park Department constructed a dedicated four-court pickleball facility last year—also at Chesterton Park— and it plays like butter. No reservations required. No fees charged either. Chesterton, of course, is home to both Indiana Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park. Each offers superb opportunities for hiking and birding. But save them for another visit, when you’re willing
to open your wallet and pay admission. Instead, discover one of Chesterton’s secret jewels: the 157-acre Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve, with five miles of bowered trails, 400 native plant species, and some very nice birds. Watch for Indigo Bunting and Belted Kingfisher.
Or take in a sunset at the Westchester Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a former municipal dump painstakingly and lovingly restored to health—and verdant beauty— by an army of volunteers.
Open to the public and as free as air are the Chesterton Art Center and the Westchester Township History Museum, cultural institutions whose exhibitions are rich, smart, and expertly curated.
Don’t think of it as Chesterton on a budget. Think of it as Chesterton off the beaten track.

Experience Events & Festivals in Carmel
There is so much to do in Carmel all year long; and the summertime event and festival season draw crowds by the hundreds as the city hosts a growing list of unique and exciting things to do. Returning for 2023, Brews on the Boulevard (July 29) will once again bring Indiana breweries to Midtown Plaza and Monon Boulevard for a night of sampling unique and flavorful beers. Tasting tickets are $30 and VIP tasting tickets are $50. VIPs can begin sampling at 4 p.m. and will receive an exclusive gift. General admission begins at 5 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older to purchase a tasting ticket. This event will feature food trucks, summer activities and not one, but four musical groups. Enjoy Corey Cox, Coan Rutkowski, Six Figures and DJ Nicolas Rage. This event is free and open to the public.
back to the Arts & Design District in September. One of the truly more unique events of the season, Artomobilia brings nearly 500 collectors and auto-devotees to one of Carmel’s premier locations. With portions of Main Street and Range Line Road closed to traffic for the event, visitors can take their time and stroll the car-lined streets while also having access to art galleries, eclectic dining options and specialty retail stores.
Festivities continue through September with art-focused events in the Arts & Design District. Carmel on Canvas (September 15-17) runs for three days and includes a two-day plein air painting competition and more than $13,000 in prize money for the artists.
Cap off a weekend of art with music! As Carmel on Canvas wraps up on Sunday, locals and visitors can make their way to the
neighborhood on the northwest side of the Arts & Design District. Since its first year in 2014, Carmel PorchFest (September 17) continues to grow; featuring local talent from many different genres playing from the porches of one of the city’s coolest neighborhoods.
The Carmel International Arts Festival (September 23-24) brings more than 100 juried artists in an array of media to Carmel’s Main Street. In addition to incredible art, festival visitors can enjoy live performances throughout the day on two stages by local musicians and dancers from many different genres.
Oktoberfest (October 6) is a family-friendly, music-filled event with a German theme at Carmel City Center. Retail and restaurants open their doors and windows to serve food and drinks and be prepared to dance to polka until after the sun sets.
What better way to say goodbye to the summer and welcome fall than with The Arts in Autumn (October 14) at Midtown Plaza. This festival for the whole family was introduced in 2022 and was so popular, it gained a permanent place on the City’s annual event programming. This is the last large event before the Carmel Christkindlmarkt and The Ice at Carter Green by Allied Solutions celebrate opening day on November 18.

Make a Splash In Marshall County
Marshall County is full of recreational opportunities, and in the summer what could be more fun than cooling off in a lake, pool, or splash pad?
In Culver, Lake Maxinkuckee is the second largest natural lake in Indiana, covering 1,864 acres. Here you’ll find Culver Beach, located along its northwestern shores. There are lifeguards, fun activities, and all sorts of amenities. Be sure and take in one of the town’s lakeside summer concerts.
The county has prided itself in its public parks, and three of them have some really cool splash pads. At the 50-acre Argos Community Park , their 1,000-square-foot fresh water pad has numerous aboveground water features and a ton of spray nozzles. In Bourbon, their splash pad includes a ring large enough for children
to run through with sprinklers inside, a small bucket that drops water, and assorted fountains and sprayers. And in Bremen, their pad has water slides and interactive splash features.
In Plymouth, you’ll enjoy dawn-to-dusk fun at Centennial Park , located along the Yellow River. Here you’ll find the community swimming pool; the new Greenways Trail, a 2.1 mile walking path; outdoor shelters for rent; tennis courts; baseball diamonds; and playground equipment.
While you’re in the area, be sure and visit Potawatomi Wildlife Park , a prehistorical and historical site of significance to the region’s past, including Indian encampments, the Stephen Bennack Potawatomi Village, a portion of the Goshen-Logansport trail, and the Tippecanoe River ford where
several early Indian trails crossed the river. Another historical can’t-miss is the Chief Menominee Monument , which marks the start of the “ Trail of Death,” which was the forced removal by militia in 1838 of about 859 members of the Potawatomi nation from Indiana to reservation lands in what is now eastern Kansas.

MELT INTO INDIANA GLASS CULTURE
Artists and craftsmen have created work for more than a century to establish Indiana as home to remarkable, functional, and decorative glass. Connecting a trail of seven counties, the Indiana Glass Trail links today’s artists and glass-related venues throughout Eastern Indiana, bringing together the tradition and beauty of glass art so you can experience it first-hand. From artist studios and blown glass demonstrations, to glass-focused festivals and glass museums and classes, to the oldest glassworks in the U.S., this family-friendly trail highlights it all. Glass lovers have plenty to see and do in Indiana, and the trail brings it all together!

FROM HANDS-ON FIBER EXPERIENCES TO EVENTS AND FESTIVALS, HERE’S A ROUNDUP OF WAYS TO CELEBRATE INDIANA ART THIS SUMMER.
44 traveliN Summer 2023 44 traveliN Summer 2023
Gail McKinnon sat at a floor loom at Tabby Tree Weaver in Fishers. She’d already spent a day and a half dressing the loom, and now she was throwing a shuttle through strands of yarn to weave the vertical and horizontal threads together. McKinnon, from northeast Indiana, was in her second day of a three-day weaving seminar. Owner/instructor Sandi Lemons walked among the half dozen looms, eyeing each student’s work, giving pointers along with encouragement.
Lemons has been teaching weaving in her shop for about four years. She said textiles have always attracted her, “and I always knew I wanted to learn to weave.” She said she loves seeing her work come alive as she creates a piece. Now she teaches others to do the same.
Weaving is popular throughout the state, as are other forms of fiber art. The modes are many, as are the practitioners. They’re all ages, male as well as female. They create works of art from mostly natural but also synthetic materials – linen, wool, silk, and acrylics.
Last fall the Wabash & Erie Canal Park in Delphi began offering historic trades classes that include not only fiber arts but also coopering and hearth cooking. “Our volunteers have been dreaming about this for a while,” said executive director Mike

Tetrault. “The allure is that it’s unique, historically important, fun to learn something new – and you get to take home what you make.”
How-to shops typically offer supplies in addition to classes. Consider Homestead Weaving Studio in Columbus, Ply Fiber Arts & Studio in Richmond, Three Moon Fiberworks in Chesterton, Blueberry Cottage in Plymouth, Spinnin’ Yarns in Griffith.
Heritage Farm in Flora, with a friendly herd of alpacas, sells not only alpaca yarn but also clothing items.
In Shipshewana, the big craft is quilting. It’s closely tied to the local Amish presence, with shops offering not only fabric but also supplies. Antique quilts, even quilt blocks and old-fashioned feed sack fabric, are at Rebecca Haarer Arts & Antiques
At the other end of the spectrum is the technology of the Quiltster Coloring Consultation at the Cotton Corner
Yoder’s Department Store has access to more than 22,000 bolts of fabric. Nearby there’s more at Lolly’s Fabrics and at Essenhaus Quilt Shop. Quilter Elaine Jones hosts groups for a meal and quilt-making demonstrations. “We need to stay with these (traditional) crafts,” she said. “We can make them better. We can make them easier. But we need to stay with them.”
Age-old crafts are showcased, and taught, in historic settings at Conner Prairie, Wabash
Woollen Works in Wabash, Kokomo
Opalescent Glass Works, and Wabash & Eric Canal Park. There are classes in quilting, weaving, bobbin lace, blacksmithing, coopering, hearth cooking, and pottery. Beck’s Mill in Salem has two 1816 carding machines considered to be the oldest in the country.
Consider painting, photography, leather, clay, wood, glass, jewelry and more, available in a variety of venues. Many sites offer not only works of art but also invite visitors to watch the artists work. See Scott Shafer Stoneware in Centerville, Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana, Artisans in Indianapolis, Hot Shop Valpo in Valparaiso, and Magaws of Boston near Richmond.
Many offer classes and supplies and a whole lot of encouragement. Think of the Chesterton Arts District , Gallery 15 & Studio in Peru, Classic Stained Glass in North Vernon.
Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery in Carmel and in French Lick offer works from throughout the state that include a myriad of arts. Other shops focus on works from their areas; among them NobleMade in Noblesville, Brown County Craft Gallery, Harrison County Artisan Center, Chesterton Arts District. Still others offer a worldwide look at art; they include By Hand Gallery in Bloomington, O’Onda Gallery & Gifts in Richmond, Global Gifts in Indianapolis and Bloomington.
And while artists produce exquisite work with years of know-how and attention to detail, there’s also a lot of fun and, sometimes, goofiness. Yarn bombing is big in Shelby County. It’s wrapping colorful yarn pieces around

objects in public spaces, to spread joy. It’s so popular that a group meets weekly to crochet items for a growing number of sites. Tiffany Kredit, recreation director of the city parks, said, “We all have something in common – yarn!”

Anderson Museum of Art’s 12th annual exhibition of Figures of Speech is literally what the artwork will reflect. Phrases that have been used across the millennia will be represented in paintings, sketches, pottery, sculptures, and multi-media pieces like “funnier than a barrel of monkey,;” “it’s raining cats and dogs,” or “Holy cow” just to name a few. There’s an exhaustive list of what might be depicted, and the results will be amazing. Opening July 7 and continuing through September 2, this exhibit is certain to please.
The exhibition, Inspiration, June 21 through August 13, will be summerthemed pieces that reflect the source of inspiration for the artist. Since many things can provide inspiration, this exhibit will be diverse in content and thought. As an addition to these works, a collection of the vibrant paintings of Ricardo A Flores, will be displayed. A native of Anderson, Flores retired from General Motors in 2003 and was a well-known labor cartoonist. The inclusion of his paintings in this exhibition brings added dimension to the show.
A true treat for guests attending will be the museum itself, a restored Carnegie Library built in 1904, that is a piece of architectural art. From its tall marble columns and tiled floors, to the top of its magnificent domed stained-glass rotunda, the space is breathtaking.

story by GLENDA WINDERS
“Parke County is a wonderful place not only to visit but also to live,” said Jim Meece, President of Parke County Convention and Visitors Commission and a county commissioner. “Nestled in one of the most picturesque areas of rural Indiana, its geographic features provide terrain for two state parks, a state recreation area lake, a county park lake, and multiple streams for canoeing. Camping, hiking, fishing, boating, and wildlife observing are all readily available.”
One of the parks he mentions is Turkey Run State Park, which has been awarded “Midwest’s Best Hike” by Midwest Living. The rugged terrain for hiking, gorges cut out by glacial meltwater, and virgin old-growth trees will immediately transport you to a peaceful mecca of long ago. The park was planned in the early 1900s as a way to save it from being purchased by a timber company and stripped of its beauty. Part of the park is devoted to the 1,609-acre

While you’re here you’ll be able to canoe, kayak and tube down Sugar Creek, ride horseback, swim in the pool, fish, visit historic sites scattered throughout Turkey Run State Park, learn about wildlife at the interactive Nature Center, picnic and play volleyball, basketball, or tennis. Lodging won’t be a problem since you’ll have cozy Granny’s Farm and Farmhouse B&B, Gobbler’s Knob Cabins, Hilltop Guesthouse, Wilkins Mill Guesthouse, and Up the Creek Camping Cabins from which to choose. Camping opportunities abound here, too, but if you’ve brought your boat you might want to head over to Raccoon State Recreation Area and Raccoon Lake, with its 300 camping sites and five boat-launching ramps. Check-in with Raccoon Lake House Rentals or Raccoon Lakeside Lodge.

If you’re not cooking over a campfire or enjoying the breakfast that comes with your room at a B&B, start the day with a bagel sandwich breakfast at Aaron’s on the Square or have heartier eggs and pancakes at Past Time Café

Do the INN thing IN INDIANA Memories Made Naturally
story by GLENDA WINDERS
Staying in one of the seven inns in Indiana’s state parks is a uniquely inspiring experience. Where else can you wake up smack in the middle of nature but still take a shower and eat a hot breakfast before you head out the door to hike, swim, enjoy wildlife, and take part in fun and educational events and programs? The rooms are cozy, and the restaurants all serve up traditional Hoosier fare. Best of all, you’ll have the feeling that you are a million miles from the stresses of everyday life. Here we highlight a few.
McCormick’s Creek State Park is the oldest of the parks, opening on July 4, 1916, and its signature lodging is the Canyon Inn. The building was originally a sanitarium for the wealthy and weary to recuperate constructed in 1888 by a Dr. Frederick Denkewalter. The good doctor felt the extraordinary natural environment would help his patients heal, and he also welcomed locals to walk and picnic on the grounds. After his death the area became a park and the inn was completely remodeled. And speaking of remodeling, mark your calendar for mid-2024, when the Spring Mill Inn at Spring Mill State Park will reopen after a massive renovation.
While you’re here, enjoy the creek and falls. Cross a stone bridge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and climb the restored 86-feet-tall fire tower. Bloomington and Indiana University are just 15 miles to the east, and 16 miles to the north are Cataract Falls and Lieber state recreation areas — a chance to see three examples of nature’s handiwork in one trip.
The Clifty Inn in Clifty Falls State Park overlooks the Ohio River. Enjoy the trails and Big Clifty and Little Clifty waterfalls
in the park; then take the 10-mile trip to nearby Madison, designated one of 12 arts and cultural districts in the state. Here you’ll discover the city’s rich history as a flourishing port in the 19th century. With its 133 blocks of historic architecture, it is one of the country’s largest Historical Landmark Districts. Madison calls itself “Indiana’s Music City,” so just about any time you visit you’ll be able to take in a live performance. “The best small town in Indiana” is another of its monikers and with good reason. Its Main Street and beyond are filled with unusual boutiques and places to eat that cover global cuisines.
For a completely different vibe, head north to Fort Harrison State Park , which until 1995 still operated as a military base. Today the centerpiece is the 18-hole Fort Golf Course, designed by renowned golf course architect Pete Dye on natural terrain. Lodging options include the Fort Harrison State Park Inn, the Harrison House and four officer homes. While you’re here you can fish or canoe on Fall Creek, take walks on the trails or visit a museum to learn the fort’s history. If you come in the winter, take advantage of one of the area’s biggest sledding hills.

Summer Happenings in Wabash County
story by GLENDA WINDERS
Big happenings are going on in Wabash County this summer, and the Hopewell House in Lagro is at the center of it all. The historic home was built on land given by the government to Miami Chief Le Gres and after his death to Senator John Tipton. Constructed around 1860, the house passed through several hands until the Williams family owned it. They were the grandparents of Shelley Long, who came to visit as a child from her home in Fort Wayne and later gained celebrity as a star of the “Cheers” and “Modern Family” television series.
The historic home had been in disrepair for several years when Hopewell Renovators bought it in 2021 and lovingly restored it to its original glory. Today it is a guesthouse rental that combines vintage elegance with modern amenities, accommodating 12 to 16 people with five bedrooms and four bathrooms. It is available for wedding parties, family reunions, and the like, and many visitors stay here when they are attending events at the Rustic Barn at Hopewell — where several fun shindigs are to happen this summer.
“Hopewell Renovators saw a need to restore this old house back to its original glory,” said Tammy Keaffaber, co-owner of The Hopewell House. “We are so proud of how it turned out and love that it has such a positive following among Lagro residents. Plus, the town is a great place to live and visit!”
Lagro is home to the live music event, Bluegrass at Hopewell, which takes place on July 29. The event, now in its third year, takes place in the Rustic Barn at Hopewell with this year’s theme being “Bluegrass, Blue

Sip, Savor Experience
Once upon a time breweries made beer, wineries made wine and distilleries made spirits. Then they delivered them to grocery stores and restaurants and that’s where you needed to go if you wanted to partake of these products. But today, purveyors of adult beverages have created destination experiences, offering tours, tastings, pairings, festivals, and full-on meals when you come to visit – each one done with its own special twist. Perhaps the best place to start is with a bus tour. That way you have a designated driver and everyone in your group can take part. Check out the Brew Bus that leaves from the Brewery Lodge in Michigan City. Whether your choice is beer, wine, cocktails or a mix thereof, you’ll have 14 stops from which to select your
favorites. Be sure to include Zorn Brew
Works and Shoreline Brewery
In Crown Point you’ll find Off Square Brewing , a locally-owned brewpub featuring craft brews on tap. Their menu has appetizers like “jerky” and Scotch eggs, but patrons flock here for their wood-fired pizzas. At Blockhead Beerworks in Valparaiso you’ll experience a “brewstillery” with an Asian-fusion kitchen.
If wine is your pleasure, select Anderson’s Winery in Valparaiso as one of your stops. Pair their sandwiches and flatbreads with wine, slushies, and beer. Four Corners Winery is in a rustic country location where you can relax with a glass of wine on a deck overlooking the vineyards. And you can “misbeehave” while sipping on unconventional meads
at Misbeehavin’ Meads in downtown Valparaiso.
Opening this fall in Valpo will be the Journeyman Distillery, housed in the formerly-abandoned Anco windshield wiper factory. This destination will feature multiple event spaces specifically designed for weddings and corporate events, a new brewery called Sea of Monsters, Union Hall Restaurant, a retail hub, and, of course, a distillery.
Many of these businesses create their potables while at the same time keeping the planet in mind. “Goshen Brewing Co. is a solar- and wind-powered family-friendly brewpub,” said founder Jesse Sensing. “We’re located along the Elkhart River in downtown Goshen.” Come here to enjoy a rotating list of beers, a pint on the lawn, or a meal that includes

In Starke County 10-56 Brewing Co. is the place to be for small bites and pizza to accompany your beer, wine or cider, and there’s live entertainment on the weekends. Taste the beer at Koontz Lake Brewing Co. and then match your favorite with some of the gems on their extensive list of sandwiches – perhaps the Koontz Lake Burger.
One of your best bets in Kosciusko County is the Sipping Trail Passport. Stopping at each of the seven brewery and winery locations throughout the year and having your passport stamped will enter you to win $100 in Kosciusko Cash, and the places where you stop will also be offering discounts.
One of your stops will be the HopLore Brewing Co., where the setting – a renovated old mill – will be part of the fun. For barbecue to go with your beer there’s Ledgeview Brewing Co.
Tippy Creek Winery is the county’s first, with every variety they make blended and bottled onsite. You’ll do your tasting of their 14 wines that range from sweet to dry on sofas beside a fireplace.

Promoting LOCAL FLAVOR
One Trail at a Time!
Indiana Foodways Alliance™ Helps Foodies and Travelers Find the Best Local Eateries.
Since 2007 the Alliance has promoted restaurant trails winding throughout the state that are devoted to certain foods. The organization lists restaurants that serve a specific type of food, lines them up on the map by location, and encourages people to follow the trail, eating their way along. Membership requires restaurants to be locally-owned, and approved through assessments that confirm a level of quality.
Whether pies, tenderloins or ice cream are your go-to food, or something else, there is likely a trail for it. Following a food trail is a fun way to discover new-to-you establishments, taste some of the most scrumptious food and drinks around, and get motivated to explore different communities. Currently, more than 240 member food—and beverage— places in Indiana have been divided into 21 trails. The Hoosier Pie Trail™, Tenderloin Lovers Trail, and Sweet Temptations Trail™ are most popular, and several have won awards. In 2018 the Tenderloin Lovers Trail was ranked 7th in “10 Best Food & Drink Trails in America” by PopSugar USA Today’s “Best Food Trails in America” ranked the Hoosier Pie Trail™ 4th place in 2015 (beating out Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail),
Who We Are
Indiana Foodways Alliance™ is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to the celebration, promotion, and preservation of the authentic food culture of Indiana.
among many other awards the trails have won.
“Indiana Foodways Alliance™ (IFA) represents some of the best local food in Indiana,” said Kristal Painter, executive director of the Orange County Economic Development Partnership and president of Indiana Foodways Alliance. “It’s experiencing the food but also the story behind the food. For instance, Superburger in Paoli named their Triple Newk burger after a local teacher. Parke County’s Mecca Tavern is owned by the local football coach. Catello’s Mozzarella Bar in Pendleton is true authentic Italian and one of few places that make their own cheeses daily.”
“Most of these locally-owned restaurants started out as pipe dreams
and turned into a way of life through dedication, hard work, and perseverance. In restaurant translation, that equals blood, sweat, and tears,” says Lindsey Skeen, executive director for IFA. She cites a great example in downtown Shelbyville, where Shirley Bailey opened the Chaperral Café more than 50 years ago. Today, Shirley still runs her restaurant with the same passion she did back in 1968.
IFA is a nonprofit run by a volunteer board of directors and trail membership continues to grow.

Upcoming Exhibits and Events at Minnetrista
As a year-round gathering place, Minnetrista’s roster of educational programs, engaging workshops, community events, and interactive exhibits is always changing. There’s something new to experience on every visit. Take a look at some of their upcoming events to discover new ways you can learn, play, explore, or shop.
Created by the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the exhibit Girlhood (It’s complicated) will be featured at Minnetrista and is the world premiere venue for this exhibition’s national tour, its first stop outside Washington D.C. Explore the
diversity of girls’ experiences and how girls have changed American history in this enlightening exhibit. Girls are made of strong stuff, and they’ve been on the front lines of change throughout American history--don’t’ miss this groundbreaking exhibit, through September 17.
Through September 10, you can experience the beauty of Indiana’s rivers, streams, and tributaries and learn about the conservation work they desperately need to ensure their survival at Indiana Waterways: The Art of Conservation. The brainchild of five Hoosier artists, this is a painting exhibition with an environmental message.
And of course, one of the can’t-miss annual events is Faeries, Sprites, & Lights, a multi-day event where children are encouraged to come dressed in their best magical faerie attire as they imagine and play in a magical faerie wonderland. Families can enjoy games, crafts, a theater show, live music and dancing, a bubble garden, and more throughout our enchanted Oakhurst Gardens. Kids and families are also encouraged to interact with the live characters, participate in our Faerie House Workshop, and enjoy some Faerie Tea.
Be sure and check out other events like farmers’ markets, art workshops, and more at minnetrista.net
