Southern Lord Downs HoweRegion Island

A short flight, less than 2 hours from Brisbane brings you to the magical island of Lord Howe. Lord Howe Island

Bowls Club

My first sight of the island was a long sliver of land in an empty part of the ocean. This seven-mile long island is a remnant of a shield volcano that erupted over 7 million years ago. Delicately tropical, it is a virtual garden paradise with its many plants, birds and beautiful clear waters brimming with sea life. With around 300 residents and accommodation for approx. 400 visitors the island maintains a healthy balance. We were greeted at the airport by Kevin Wilson and then it was off for a short tour of the island. Joan, Ross and I are here to play in the Tasman Triples and help celebrate the bowls clubs 90th anniversary. I don’t know how we will go, but by the time you get this 2013 edition of the directory you will be able to follow our week on the news page of my website. www.australianbowlsdirectory.com.au Absolute bliss for me, no mobile phone, no internet and no business for a full week. My travelling companions Ross, Joan, Catherine & Robert are off to the welcome dinner at the bowlo tonight, a moonlight stroll along the beach and some drinks beside the pool………… heaven!!!

Beachcomber MINE Host Gary Payten started playing bowls when he was in the early years of high school but for the past decade, his time has been devoted to his family’s Lord Howe Island treasure, the Beachcomber apartment complex. Not that he is ever far from the sport. Beachcomber is less than a kilometre from the island bowls club where the Payten name features prominently as one of the island’s foundation families. The family conducted the Beachcomber from the days it was first opened in 1913 but it was sold late last century before Gary bought it back after 13 years.

Somerset Apartments ONE of the keenest supporters of Lord Howe Island bowls is Gai Wilson, owner-operator of the Somerset Apartments resort in the heart of the tropical paradise. The name appears on the bowls club’s annual Triples tournament in November, as well as being part of the special day put on by the island’s Wilson family. Gai knows well the support the island receives from visiting bowlers, many of whom choose to stay at Somerset for their visit. She gladly provides them with free transport to the bowls club, less than 1km away, and is quite often there to pick them up for the return journey.
