Wataweih (HELLO)

W

hile Norfolk Island has now been ticked of my “Bucket List”, it is definitely somewhere that needs to be visited more than once. There is just so much to see and do that I found it impossible to do everything in one week. I can only describe it as breathtakingly beautiful and definitely well worth the trip. This Island paradise is a short 2 ½ hour flight from Brisbane or Sydney. Renowned for its connection to the “Bounty” it is steeped in its own unique slice of history. A small piece of land abundant in stories, activities and character, it is a must see. As we found out on our visit last year, the people of Norfolk Island love their sport. From when the island was settled for the second time (18251856), sport has played an important part of island life. Records show that sports were played by the military and free settlers on the sporting fields in Kingston. Most of the shops on Norfolk close at lunchtime on Wednesdays so the locals take the opportunity to play sporting fixtures. Some of the sports played today include bowls, golf and tennis.

Norfolk Island’s historic Government House - built in 1829 and handsomely restored - is generally not open to the public. However, on a number of occasions each year, its formal rooms are open for the afternoon. This is to allow opportunities for people to visit and gain an appreciation of Government House’s place in the rich history of Norfolk Island as well as to raise funds for Norfolk Island’s volunteer charity and service organisations.

Bounty Day Marks the anniversary of the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders to Norfolk Island. The Pitcairners were the descendants

of the infamous English sailors of mutiny on the Bounty fame and the Tahitian women who, under their leader Fletcher Christian began a new life on isolated Pitcairn Island. After outgrowing tiny Pitcairn the community, Queen Victoria gave Norfolk Island to the 8 island families, 194 islanders arrived on the Morayshire in 1856.

Experience the contagious “Island Wave” wherever you go.

Norfolk Island - 3 History & Cluture Events In 2016 Norfolk Island has a packed Events Calendar. Apart from the many Bowls Carnivals you can choose to travel to Norfolk Island and participate in one of the many festivals held throughout the year. Events include Government House Open Charity Day, ANZAC Day celebrations, Bounty Day – 160th Anniversary in 2016, Golf, music and dancing festivals throughout the year.

The mutineers from the Bounty and their Polynesian companions found Pitcairn Island, and there a unique culture was borne. Years later, in 1856 the entire Pitcairn community arrived upon Kingston pier on Norfolk Island to greet their new home – a home where their descendants still live today. Visitors to Norfolk quickly realise that the island buzzes with a living breathing culture – and the local pride in custom and tradition is shared in earnest with the island’s visitors.

Everyone’s a winner on Norfolk

Win/Win with a Norfolk Island Bowling Holiday! There is absolutely no need to make a choice between attending a bowling competition or going on a holiday when it comes to bowling on Norfolk Island! As Robert McNamee, a National coach and departing bowler from last year’s TAB Triples competition told us, “It’s a real holiday where the bowls are good and the Club makes you welcome”. Bowlers will genuinely leave with a win/win score having had both a great bowling week and a great holiday. ‘Relaxed, friendly and easy’ are the words to sum up a week on Norfolk Island. The small size of the island makes this the perfect holiday as, aside from it being genuinely welcoming and social you spend minimal time in your car. When it comes to travelling to the Club it’s even easier with some accommodation houses located two doors along the road! The Club also has an excellent restaurant and is just across the road from the island’s supermarket and many cafes, so there are days when you won’t even need to

get in your car. Norfolk Island is located ‘in the middle of the ditch,’ an easy 2 hour flight from Brisbane and Sydney and 1 hour from New Zealand. This means that Norfolk uniquely attracts both Aussie and Kiwi bowlers to its tournaments who, together with the locals create instant (but of course very friendly!) TransTasman battles. Enjoying the company of fellow bowlers has to be a certainty in a Club with a sign above the bar that reads “There are no strangers in this club, just friends you haven’t met.” Whether taking part in one of the club’s scheduled competitions, bringing a group from your club at another time, or coming for a casual bowl while on holiday, a friendly bowling time on Norfolk Island is surely guaranteed. There are four Tournaments run each year. The Club’s longest standing signature event, the Bounty Bowls Tournament is on in May (May 1-8 Open Fours and 8 - 12 May 2016 Mixed fours).TAB Triples 12 - 22 August 2016, has men’s or ladies teams and a minimum of five qualifying rounds. The South Pacific Pairs is an Open comp for men’s, women or mixed pairs and runs next 20-24 February 2017.

Bringing a group for one of these tournaments or at any other time of year is easy to organise. Locally based the Norfolk Island Travel Centre has the local knowledge to book packages including airfares, accommodation and car hire and also liaise with the Norfolk Island Bowling Club to schedule joint competitions and private lawns use. Of course, individual bowlers can turn up for a game when on holiday and know they’ll always be welcomed. Many bowlers find time to fit in some fishing and golf during a ‘bowling week’. Norfolk’s fishing is renowned for every trip coming home with a great catch, such as Kingfish, Silver Trevally, Amberjack and Sweetlip (Red Throat Emperor). The beauty of the Island is infamous with high rising cliffs, green undulating valleys, lush rainforest and brilliant turquoise waters over coral reefs. Equally amazing is its history of convict past (World Heritage listed) and as the final home for the mutineers and Tahitian women of ‘mutiny on the Bounty’ fame. Aside from independently exploring the island, there are many tours and activities on offer including 4WD tours, GlassBottom Boats, progressive dinners to island homes, museums, sunset fish frys, swimming and walks. Nonbowling family and friends are certainly kept well entertained.

The Norfolk Island Travel Centre offers special discounts on some accommodation with 1 in 10 bowlers staying free, or for larger groups 1 in 21 bowlers fly free. Contact them on freecall 1800 1400 66 email joyce@travelcentre. nf or visit www.norfolkislandtravelcentre.com
