80 Years of Ladies’ Bowls Compiled by Val White
The eightieth anniversary of the Stanthorpe Ladies’ Bowling club was celebrated on October 17th, 2012. To mark the occasion, the Ladies’ Club has researched the Minute Books to compile a comprehensive history of the Club. Before the Ladies’ Club was formed, four ladies Mesdames Powney, Smith, Munro and Drake used to have a roll-up by themselves, and when the number grew to eight, they decided to ask the Mens’ Club for permission to form a Ladies’ Club. A meeting was convened, and Mr. J. Thompson, Honorary Treasurer of the Mens’ Club occupied the chair. As a result of research of the report of the meeting in the Border Post dates 15/4/1932, Mr Thompson is quoted as stating “The Ladies club to be formed would be an integral part of the Men’s Club, and would have to abide by the
rules of that organization”. The sixteen foundation members were Mesdames Cloake, Chauvel, Drake, Day, Ellis, Ferguson, Glover, Howard, Koina, Munro, Olive, O’Hearne, Powney, Pierpoint, Robinson, Sewell, Smith and White, the club colours to be sky blue and white. The Club flourished, as by the first Annual Meeting the membership had risen to twenty-three. Penny Box As we know, the club was governed by the Mens’ Club who had stated at its inception that they were in a ‘sound
financial position’. The ladies ran a Penny Club to raise funds. This was a box into which they placed any small change they could spare. The first official visit from the Queensland Ladies Bowling Association was on the 24th October 1933. Club Ball 1934 was a very active year. The decision was made to run an Annual Ladies’ Club Ball. It was to be run on a 50/50 basis with the Mens’ Club. The suggested admission fee was 3/6, with

Festivals
Since the clubs inception, the ladies had supported three charities, the Red Cross, Bush Children’s Health Scheme, and the local Ambulance. The golf house was destroyed by fire in 1976, so the golfers shared our club house for a while, then a decision was made to amalgamate both clubs to form the Stanthorpe Recreation Club – both clubs to be accommodated in a new brick building. Our Golden Jubilee was held in 1982 – Mrs Grace Spiro, our Q.L.B.A. delegate and her party attended. We placed a sealed capsule in a specially built cairn beside the flagpole in which hour history is recorded, and it is to be reopened on 2032. The Southern Downs District Ladies’ Bowling Association was formed in 1983 and four of our members have served as Presidents over the years. We celebrated our Diamond Jubilee in 1992, and this unfortunately is the last occasion on which the ladies had both greens full. Out member has been in a steady decline over the last years in common with other bowls clubs, and our number now stands at nineteen, with only a handful being active players, but the men support us on our playing days, so we are still able to enjoy ‘playing the game’.

Bob & Colleen use the Australian Bowls Directory as their bible on where and when they can get a game and are often disappointed when they pass through a town that is not in the directory and when they find out there is a bowls club there but its too early or too late for them to get a game. FROM THE SUMMIT TO MACKAY
North Mackay ladies visit South Toowoomba Bowls Club during the Carnival of Flowers
Travelling bowler, Jo McKaskill from The Summit Bowls Club had a wonderful time during her stay with her daughter in Mackay. While there she managed to catch a few games of bowls with the ladies from Northern Beaches Bowls Club. Jo had such a great time that she has already booked a return visit to the club and is looking forward to keeping in touch with her new friends from the club. Jo loved the new bowls members club house and commented favourably on the well maintained greens.
STANTHORPE HAS A NEW MEN’S SHED The Men’s Shed organisation has arrived in Stanthorpe. After receiving massive community support we are able to hold meetings in our temporary home, the Rodeo Shed in the Stanthorpe Show Grounds in High Street, at 10 am every Wednesday. When we move into our permanent home within the show grounds early in the New Year, we will be offering activities on most week days. Thanks to the generosity of many benefactors, at present we are able to offer a range of woodwork and metal work activities, with the expectation that other activities will be added as the year progresses. All you guys out there are invited to visit us at the showgrounds and get involved. Visitors are welcomed with open arms. If you are a hands on person, or just a bloke who wants to share a coffee with some other blokes, the Stanthorpe and

Good friends Bob & Colleen from Cardwell, Queensland, have been travelling around Australia for 12 months and are now going around for the second time visiting different towns and bowls clubs along the way. They are always on the look out for bowls clubs to play at. While visiting me for a week in October they were able to get a game of social bowls on Wednesday at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club as well as participate in the Stanthrope Bowls Clubs Triples Carnival. This made 61 different clubs that they had now played at.
