More than a million people take an Alaskan cruise every year, making the US state one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

ALASKA

4

It’s easy to see why. Virtually all cruises sail via the Inside Passage, the spectacular labyrinth of islands, inlets, fjords and mountains that starts north of Vancouver Island and runs to Juneau, the Alaskan state capital and beyond. With the scenery come countless opportunities for wildlife watching, a wide variety of outdoor activities and the chance to explore the cultures of the many indigenous people that still live within the wilderness known as Alaska.

W hen to go The Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. The best time of year to cruise Alaska depends on what you’re hoping to see and do. We recommend visiting Alaska from late May through to early September for the fairest weather, with average temperatures between 15 and 26 degrees Celsius. The cruises selected for this Alaskan Collections depart during the more favourable summer months. Climate Alaska - Anchorage

Average precipitation Days with rain Hours of sunshine per month June

July

Of the few summer months in Alaska, June has the longest days, with summer solstice falling on the 21st June, brings wildflowers, lush green forest and mild temperatures to Southeast Alaska, making it a perfect time to explore. Summer solstice is an exciting time all over Alaska, so make plans to visit a town or festival before, during or after your June cruise.

Sunny days and amazing wildlife activity make July cruises very special indeed.

August

September

Alaska is alive with activity in August, and the warm, summer days of Southeast Alaska cause the landscape to move and change. It can rain more in August than in other months, but it is also beautiful.

Peak tourist season is over by September, so Alaska will be quieter as everyone prepares for another long, white winter; including the wildlife and locals.

Experience the incredible force of calving glaciers and moving icebergs. And there is still plenty of daylight in August to experience everything you wish to.

Many 1000’s of whales have made their return trip to Alaska from Hawaii by this time, providing a spectacle for passengers on cruise ships throughout July.

Mountainsides turn beautiful shades of gold and yellow, and the mountains begin to collect snow on their peaks. As the nights grow darker and longer, there is every chance you will catch the awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis, Alaska’s northern lights.

Currency Currency used in Alaska is US Dollars. This is also the currency used onboard a cruise ship in Alaska. It is preferable if your money is changed before you leave Australia. The Canadian Dollar (C$) is the official currency in Victoria or Vancouver, Canada, and as Alaska is in the United States, everywhere else you visit in Alaska will accept US Dollars. When paying in US Dollars in Victoria or Vancouver expect change in Canadian Dollars, so take small notes with you on any excursion.

TOP PLACES TO

ANCHORAGE Perched on the edge of the wilderness, nestled between Cook Inlet (famous for its king salmon run) and the Turnagain Arm, is the city of Anchorage. Blending cosmopolitan excitement and the great outdoors, the city’s youthful exuberance contributes to its lively nightlife, eclectic dining, and sense of adventure. Beyond the city limits of ‘Alaska’s Big Apple’, as many as 60 glaciers are located within an hour’s drive. An Anchorage cruise during the long summer days means more time to explore its natural beauty by day and sample the all-embracing culinary fare long into the evening. You’ll also discover the native history, art, and crafts that are at the heart of the Alaskan identity.

DENALI With few established trails and only one road, Denali National Park remains one of the world’s last true wilderness areas. The varied subarctic landscape is home to grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves, as well as endangered birds. Wild animals roam as they have for millennia through unspoiled backcountry of Taiga forest, alpine tundra, and snow-capped peaks. The sheer expanse of wilderness, the solitude of Denali National Park’s single road, and its status as one of the last true intact subarctic ecosystems make Denali one of the best places in the country to view wildlife in their natural habitat. It is also one of the best destinations in Alaska for bike riding, off-roading and hiking. FAIRBANKS Fairbanks is the embodiment of the pure Alaskan spirit, with its gold rush roots, hardy locals, and famed midnight sun. Born of a turn-of-the-century trader who found himself stranded in what is present-day downtown, Fairbanks was founded when gold was discovered nearby and the trading post blossomed into a thriving city that outlasted its gold rush boom. Hugging the northern bank of the Chena River that converges with the unyielding Tanana, the Chena sternwheelers that navigate Fairbanks’ waters afford breathtaking views of the city and countryside, as well as giving visitors the chance to pan for gold in one of the many creeks that still turn up flakes of gold on a daily basis. GLACIER BAY If you see Glacier Bay on your Alaska cruise itinerary, one thing is certain, you are in for a spectacular day filled with amazing sites and incredible photo opportunities. Spend the day onboard sailing through the 3.3 million acre National Park, which is actually the largest UNESCO protected biosphere. The park consists of more than 50 tidewater and terrestrial glaciers and snowcapped mountains. During your scenic cruise, Park Rangers will join the ship to share their knowledge of this amazing place. Glacier Bay also has abundant wildlife on display, including humpback whales, sea otters, porpoises, harbor seals, black bears, mountain goats, bald eagles and large colonies of seabirds. JUNEAU Astounding ice-capped mountains welcome the cruising traveller to Juneau. Alaska is called the Land of the Midnight Sun, and Juneau, its capital, shines with a wide selection of delicious dining and native Alaskan art shopping. Juneau is one of the most beautiful capital cities in America, with once-in-a-lifetime shore excursions. It has been called “Alaska’s peak experience” due to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Kayak up one of the area’s many protected waterways, go flightseeing, tour historic downtown or try your hand at panning for gold. The majestic Mendenhall Glacier lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau. 6

VISIT IN ALASKA

KETCHIKAN Ketchikan is known as Alaska’s “First City” because it’s the first major community travellers come to as they journey north. Located on an island, Ketchikan began life as an Indian fishing camp. The name Ketchikan comes from a Tlingit phrase that means “eagle with spread-out wings”, a reference to a waterfall near town. Visitors to Ketchikan will be intrigued by its rich Native heritage, which includes the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at Totem Heritage Center. The Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian are all a part of the city’s colourful history. Ketchikan, with its abundance of salmon, is also a sport fishing paradise. Sightseers will be impressed with both the scenic town and its surroundings, especially Misty Fjords National Monument. SEWARD Edging the Kenai Peninsula and framed by the glacier-covered Kenai Mountains that run along its south-eastern spine, Seward is a rustic port town whose grand terrain will leave you breathless. The pristine wilderness is home to nesting seabirds, countless islands, wetlands, and breathtaking views. As the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park, the Harding Icefield — an expanse of ice and snow created over 23,000 years ago — is easily within reach and culminates in 40 glaciers that dramatically calve into the sea. Situated at a grand natural intersection where bays and fjords stretching south to the Pacific meet the crested wilderness — Seward is emblematic of the wildly beautiful state that is Alaska. SKAGWAY In the late 1800s, fortune-seekers headed to Skagway, known as the “Gateway to the Klondike,” on their way to the White Pass and Chilkoot Trails during Alaska’s Gold Rush. Today, this cosy town is one of the most popular stops on the Inside Passage route for Alaska cruise lines. It retains much of its old charm, with rustic boardwalks and storefronts that transport you back to the Old West. Head to Klondike Gold Rush National Park Museum for an in-depth look at Klondike and the two routes out of Skagway – Chilkoot Pass and White Pass. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad runs vintage locomotives through the famously steep Chilkoot Trail and offers sweeping mountain views during its climb toward Canada. SITKA Sitka is a charming island community surrounded by stunning mountain and seaside vistas. A Russian settlement until the Alaska Purchase of 1867, Sitka’s Russian heritage is still very much rooted in the city. A walk along the promenade in Whale Park offers a chance to view breaching humpback whales while a trek into Sitka Historical Park reveals stunning coastal trails and hundred-year-old totem poles. Venture to Tongass National Forest for up close views of wildlife, including Alaska Coastal Brown Bears, American Bald Eagles and Sitka Blacktail Deer. Head to the Sheldon Jackson Museum, the oldest standing structure in all of Alaska which is home to a small, yet impressive collection of artefacts from all of Alaska’s indigenous groups. TRACY’S ARM Steep cliffs and glacier-covered mountains flank this fjord, fringed by the largest intact coastal temperate rain forest in the United States. Old-growth trees colonized Tracy Arm’s mouth long ago as the Ice Age retreated. But further up the sinuous 48-kilometre waterway, its icy grip lingers a little. There, the twin Sawyer Glaciers flow from the peaks down to the sea, sloughing off stories-high chunks of water frozen decades or even centuries before. Tracy Arm is part of the 5.7 million acres (or around 23,000 square kilometres) of pure wilderness sheltered by the Tongass National Forest (America’s largest). Visitors often see bears, whales and mountain goats roaming across various corners of this pristine area—not to mention chubby baby seals resting on the ice floes.

THE CRYSTAL CRUISES EXPERIENCE

THE CUNARD LINE EXPERIENCE

Crystal Cruises consistently ranks among the top luxury cruise lines in the world, having won an unprecedented number of major awards. They have been voted World’s Best by the readers of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveller, more than any other cruise line, hotel or resort.

Cunard’s onboard offering of sophistication and ambience harkens back to the golden age of cruising during the 1930s-50s when ocean travel was celebrated as the glamorous and luxurious method of holidaying offering impeccable service, magnificent ships and cultured voyages.

CRYSTAL CRUISES ARE BEST FOR:

CUNARD LINE CRUISES ARE BEST FOR:

Discerning adults and families wanting exceptional service, high-level enrichment programs and the opportunity to explore interesting destinations. Most guests are 55+, however Crystal is leading the way in the evolution of multi-generational luxury cruising by offering concessions for children sailing on select cruises, as well as dedicated facilities and programs for ages 3 to 17.

Guests seeking a traditional British ocean liner experience, preferring educational pursuits onboard rather than Vegas-style entertainment. Cunard is popular for world cruisers as well as guests who enjoy back-to-back voyages across a variety of vessels.

ATMOSPHERE AND EXPERIENCE ONBOARD: Crystal Cruises offers a relaxed but sophisticated ambience. Staterooms are elegant, and the Crystal Penthouses are immaculate, with furnishings that wouldn’t be out of place in a top city penthouse – complete with butler service. Crystal’s shore excursions are highly rated. Rather than “one size fits all,” guests may choose from the standard type (similar to what is offered by other lines), small group (more personalized) or private (for groups of 4 or more). CLIENTELE: Crystal’s guests tend to be affluent, educated, active, and socially-oriented. They are seasoned travellers and enjoy the finer things in life. AT A GLANCE: Ship size: Medium Class: Luxury Style: Couples, Enriching, Family Highlights: Wrap-around promenade deck for jogging and strolling, as well as tiered stern decks for quiet sunbathing and wake views are rare features. Wines, liquors, and soft drinks bundled with fares are convenient.

10

ATMOSPHERE AND EXPERIENCE ONBOARD: The iconic ships of Cunard have been known for sophisticated ocean travel for over 150 years, and are perhaps the most famous ocean liners in the world. The ships’ atmospheres are dignified and traditional, with nods to history throughout in the décor and activities. And although they have a prestigious heritage, Cunard’s fleet is one of the youngest at sea, meaning they have some of the best ship facilities, entertainment and activity options available. The attentive crew take great pride in making your stay on board unforgettable. From the very first greeting when you embark, to the way your stateroom steward greets you by name, the service is warm and sincere. It isn’t stuffy. It isn’t hurried. It’s always friendly, but never overfamiliar. This is the famous Cunard White Star Service. CLIENTELE: Cunard attracts an international crowd. The clientele tends to be older, however transatlantic crossings, especially, attract younger guests and their families. AT A GLANCE: Ship size: Large Class: Premium Style: Couples, Enriching, Family Highlights: Great lectures, the biggest libraries at sea, and impressive art and memorabilia collections make the ships as much of a learning opportunity as the destinations visited. History comes alive as you travel the rail route that united Canada as a nation more than 130 years ago. From lush rainforests, through the semi-arid desert, alongside the powerful Kicking Horse River, and into the stunning Rocky Mountain towns of Lake Louise or Banff.

RAINFOREST TO GOLD RUSH: VANCOUVER > WHISTLER > QUESNEL > JASPER

COASTAL PASSAGE: SEATTLE > VANCOUVER > CANADIAN ROCKIES

Recapture the romance of the Gold Rush era as you ascend through the rugged mountain terrain of Whistler, moving towards the old mining trail known as the Cariboo Wagon Road and historic Quesnel, the Gold Pan City, then onto Jasper, the quaint mountain town nestled in the snowcapped Canadian Rockies.

Travel from coastal rainforests to the peaks of the Canadian Rockies. This unique rail experience connects the cosmopolitan cities of Seattle and Vancouver to the ever-changing landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta, serving up the crème de la crème of Western Canada with a bit of America on top.

The deposit amount required to secure your holiday depends on the cruise line booked and may also depend on the length of your cruise. A minimum deposit of $1000 per person will be payable. Your Cruiseco Travel Agent will advise you at the time of booking should any additional deposit amount be required and when it is due. This deposit secures your cruise berth and hotel room. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure from Australia. Some cruise lines may require final payments earlier. If your booking is made within 120 days of departure from Australia, full payment will be due immediately. Failure to pay the deposit by the option due date may result in the cancellation of your booking. Any special meal requirements will be made on a “request” basis only and cannot be guaranteed. Failure to obtain travel insurance will not waive any cancellation fees in the event that you need to cancel your trip. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS In the unfortunate event that you should have to cancel your holiday, notice of cancellation must be made in writing to your Cruiseco Travel Agent. The day that the written notice is received by Cruiseco will be considered the date that your cancellation has been made. Certain cancellation fees will apply to your holiday, if cancelled after the deposit or final payment has been made. These cancellation fees will be levied by the cruise line and possibly the airline and other suppliers, and will be greater the closer to your travel date that you cancel. You should check very carefully with your Cruiseco Travel Agent what these fees are before you make a booking. A fee of $25.00 per person will be charged for any revision or alteration made to a reservation after the booking is confirmed. For full terms and conditions of each cruise line, including their cancellation policies, please refer to https: www.cruising.com.au These cancellation penalties are in addition to any cancellation fees that may be levied by your Cruiseco Travel Agent.
