The capabilities of our expedition ship will enhance your journey, and take you further than any other form of exploration. There are crowning moments in every holiday you take, but only an expedition ship can deliver the freedom of exploration. It's a special experience!
Expedition cruising has to be flexible so as to respond to nature and the environment outside. Days are often filled

Hunting has always been an important part of the culture, so you can count on super-fresh seafood and game.
GREENLAND Despite Greenland's massive size, the population is relatively small with just over 57,000 residents, most of whom (almost 90%) have Inuit heritage. The remainder are mostly Greenland Danes. The traditional people of Greenland have much in common with their counterparts in northern Canada, Siberia and Alaska. This ancient culture is evident even in the bigger towns like Nuuk. The overwhelming majority (over 90%) enjoy modern conveniences such as smart phones and the internet, but in the vast isolated spaces away from the few sizable towns, many still hunt for survival, travel by dogsled or kayak, and attend traditional coffee gatherings called Kaffemik. Greenland's first pioneers arrived to this icy landmass around four to five thousand years ago via a land bridge that joined northern Canada and Greenland.
costume. Whalers were the most common visitors, but in 1721, Danish missionary Hans Egede brought Christianity to Greenland. His conversion of the Inuits to the Lutheran Evangelical Church was so successful that it is still the main religion of the country. Greenland has been a Danish possession since 1536, but the territory developed closer relationships with the US and Canada during WW2. The US developed military bases in Greenland during Germany's occupation of Denmark, and Greenland continued to be strategically important during the Cold War years. One of these bases is now the Kangerlussuaq international airport, where you enter Greenland. Unlike Russia did with Alaska, Denmark refused to sell Greenland to
the US, and continued to develop its independent status. Danish town names are largely replaced by Greenlandic ones.

Art has always been an important form of expression in Greenland, as has music. Tupilak sculptures carved from reindeer antlers, narwhal and walrus teeth have remained important art forms. Drum dances and choral music both play a significant role in the country's cultural heritage. Traditional dress can still be seen occasionally at celebrations and during holidays. Glass beads, silk and wool are features of the vibrantly coloured traditional clothing. Hunting has always been an important part of the culture, so you can count on super-fresh seafood and game. Berries are a common part of the local diet. Greenland's animals are raised in wide open spaces, and feed on natural grass, ensuring meat of the highest quality.
The Thule Inuit came in the 9th century. This was roughly the same time as the arrival of the Norse Vikings into southern Greenland. Starting with 'Eric the Red' in 982, Norse settlers maintained a strong presence for nearly 600 years before vacating the country. Then England and Scandinavia sent expeditions for the next 300 years The Inuit coveted the small glass beads which are now part of their national www.travelmasters.com.au

(CANADA'S 10TH PROVINCE)
T
his is Canada's easternmost province, approx half the size of NSW, with a particularly interesting and scenic Atlantic coastline. The Strait of Belle Isle (approx 125 kms long, and as narrow as 15 kms) separates the province into two geographical divisions - Labrador (roughly triangular) and the island of Newfoundland, which is nearly twice the size of Tasmania. There are additionally more than 7,300 smaller islands. Labrador is the most easterly part of the Canadian Shield, an enormous area of ancient metamorphic rock stretching across mainland Canada eastward from the Rockies, below Hudson Bay. Colliding tectonic plates have shaped much of the geology - Gros Morne National Park is an outstanding example of tectonics at work. Northern Labrador has a pretty severe polar tundra climate, but most of Newfoundland island is cool and continental.

NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
The first brief European contact with Newfoundland & Labrador (the Norse Vikings) was about 1000 AD when they briefly settled in L'Anse aux Meadows. European fishermen and explorers (including John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, and the Basques from Spain) began arriving around 1500. Fishing expeditions were seasonal, but the first permanent settlements happened nearly 400 years ago. Already a British colony, Newfoundland & Labrador voted against joining Canada in 1869, and became an independent dominion. Fishing was always the dominant industry, but the economy collapsed in the Great Depression of the 1930's so the people voluntarily relinquished their independence and became a British colony again. Because of its strategic location, relative prosperity returned during WW2 & the people eventually voted to join Canada in 1949. Despite efforts to modernise after joining Canada, poverty and emigration remained a feature of their history. The rich fishing grounds of the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland & Labrador (the continental shelf ), are where the cold and warm Atlantic ocean currents collide (the cold Labrador Current & the warm Gulf Stream), providing a plentiful supply of food for fish. The sudden collapse of the cod industry in the 1990's was a terrible blow to the economy - although haddock, halibut, herring, mackeral and cod fishing are still important in the deeper waters. Aquaculture is a new and growing industry. Marine mammals along the coasts include dolphins, porpoises, seals (harp & hooded) and different whale varieties (pilot whales, minkes, sei and fin whales, humpbacks).

L'Anse aux Meadows Herds of caribou roam the interior regions. Moose, red squirrels, chipmunks and coyotes can be found. In the subarctic tundra of northern Labrador, any soil over a metre below ground is permanently frozen (permafrost). Trees and scrubs are stunted because their roots cannot grow into the permafrost. Here, apart from caribou, there are arctic wolves and foxes, lemmings and voles. It’s also the permanent home of the ptarmigan. In southern Labrador, golden eagles, fish hawks and peregrine falcons nest on the steep coastal cliffs. The heavily glaciated coastline (and resulting lack of good soil) is the result of scouring from the most recent ice-age - Newfoundland was completely covered by glaciers. Agriculture is therefore very limited, and other sources of income had to be developed. Exploitation of the natural resources became particularly significant. Labrador City and Wabush are now the scene of major iron ore mines, hydro-electric power is generated at Churchill Falls, a nickel mine is located at Voisey's Bay, and a new mine at Duck Pond is producing copper, zinc, silver and gold. The province produces 55% of Canada's total iron ore. There's a paper mill at Corner Brook, and Goose Bay is a permanent (and significant) military base. The oil boom in the last 20 years has significantly revived the economic fortunes of the province. However, a new spirit of unity has emerged, and the historic cultural and political tensions between British Protestants and Irish Catholics have faded. About half of the province's economy is based on its abundant natural resources, particularly petroleum, minerals, forestry and fishery. The capital, St John's (pop 110,000), the most easterly city in North America, is located at the extreme east of Newfoundland island on the Avalon Peninsula. Of all the major Canadian cities, St John's is the
foggiest, the wettest and the windiest - but it also has many attractive redeeming features that make it unique, and a visitor favourite. WHERE THE PAST IS ALWAYS PRESENT! History and geology come alive among the wild landscapes and island outposts of Labrador and Newfoundland. Here, lives are intricately tied to the sea, and to ancient human history. We get to explore two captivating UNESCO World Heritage sites. The first, the ancient Viking settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows, changed the understanding of Norse history when it was uncovered in 1960 by archeologists. We'll be privileged to walk the grounds of the unearthed Norse base, and see for ourselves the ancient artifacts recovered from the site remnants from a culture that leave no doubt of a Viking presence in the Americas. The second, at Gros Morne National Park, we witness the breathtaking effects of plate tectonics among the cliffs, fjords and sweeping alpine plateau - a spectacular landscape that was once part of an ancient ocean, pushed up as two continents collided almost half a billion years ago.
ADD TO YOUR EXPEDITION CRUISE WITH AN EXTENSION IN CANADA OR THE USA For Australians to access Greenland and Eastern Canada for this 'off the beaten track' expedition, necessitates substantial international flights. It makes sense to amortise the costs of 'getting there', by taking the opportunity to add an extra 'bucket list' experience without the cost of another international airfare. GREAT STOPOVER (AND SHOPPING) OPTIONS You could break your international flights with convenient stopovers in interesting places in the USA or Western Canada - like Hawaii, Vancouver, San Francisco, Chicago or Los Angeles. A short stay on the way over or back, can break the long flights and allow you to experience a new destination, as well as helping to personally prepare for the holiday or flights ahead. Beginning the expedition in good shape maximises the value of your whole holiday experience.

MORE EXTENSIONS OUTSTANDING RIVER CRUISING & GREAT LAKES OPTIONS If the comfort and slower pace of river cruising is appropriate for you, there are some outstanding options available to consider. The majestic 5-star paddle-wheelers of the Mississippi and it’s tributary the Ohio (from New Orleans or St Louis), the ruggedly beautiful and historic Columbia & Snake Rivers (US Oregon & Washington states), the scenically spectacular St Lawrence River and Great Lakes, or the iconic Hudson River to New York - any of these river cruising options could be combined with our Greenland & Atlantic Canada expedition. Please ask us for costs and details of departure dates that fit, and the connecting arrangements that can be put in place to dovetail easily with the expedition dates.
SHORT TOURING EXTENSIONS We have many fabulous short tours of the diminutive Maritime States of Eastern Canada - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. This is a very special part of Canada which is not always easy to access from Australia, but fits comfortably into the travel arrangements for the expedition - and its the perfect season to be there. Also perfectly timed and fitting easily into arrangements for the expedition, is a stopover in Vancouver to do a side trip to Alaska - either a 7 day cruise, or a cruise combined with a land tour of the Rockies. There are small-ship cruises concentrating on the best of the Inside Passage, or cruises combined with travel to Fairbanks and Denali National Park in the heartland of Alaska.
Denali National Park, Alaska

Alternatively, we could organise short visits to Las Vegas (from LA), or New York and Boston. Or a visit to a destination of your choice in Asia is possible, in conjunction with an airline carrier like Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines or China Southern, on your way to Canada. Maybe there is somewhere else that you’ve always wanted to visit that could be conveniently combined with this expedition. It’s even possible to utilise a ‘Round World’ ticket which would allow a visit to just about anywhere in the world. All things are possible! Check with us about the possibilities. It makes sense to maximise the value from the international flights required to join this fabulous ‘off the beaten track’ expedition.
