12 DAYS ITINERARY Sat, 19 Oct Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy Sun, 20 Oct Bonifacio, Corsica Mon, 21 Oct Mahon, Spain Tue, 22 Oct Ibiza, Spain Wed, 23 Oct At sea Thu, 24 Oct Motril, Spain Fri, 25 Oct At sea Sat, 26 Oct Safi, Morocco Sun, 27 Oct Casablanca, Morocco Mon, 28 Oct Tangier, Morocco Tue, 29 Oct Cadiz, Spain Wed, 30 Oct At sea Thu, 31 Oct Lisbon, Portugal
SOME SUGGESTIONS from us, for your PORTS OF CALL Time in 10 exotic Ports of Call on this cruise is your's to enjoy as you wish - each port is different, and all have colourful local attractions, markets, restaurants & bars to explore. Guided shore excursions, of course, are available from the ship. Sat, 19 Oct - Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy St. Peter’s, with its breathtaking Sistine Chapel, newly restored to its former glory; the Spanish Steps, where all Rome passes by; the Colosseum, where gladiators fought to the death, and the Pantheon, considered to be the most perfect architectural statement of the ages. Sun, 20 Oct - Bonifacio, Corsica TOP TIP: Visit Sartène, the Oldest Corsican Village The village of Sartène stands atop a rocky promontory and some of the houses are literally built into the rock face. In the Middle ages it was the scene of vendettas, pirate attacks and fierce battles with the Genoese occupiers, and became known as “the most truly Corsican town in Corsica”. Mon, 21 Oct - Mahon, Spain TOP TIP: Experience Prehistoric Taula de Torralba Taula de Torralba, a prehistoric talaiotic settlement dating from 2000 – 1000 BC. The Taula consists of two slabs of rock, one placed on the other to form a “T”. The monument is more sophisticated than many other prehistoric constructions and is generally considered to have been used as a sanctuary. The Taula is exclusive to Minorca and despite their shared Talayotic heritage, there is nothing comparable in Mallorca or the other Balearic Islands.
Tue, 22 Oct - Ibiza, Spain TOP TIP: Discover Ibiza by 4X4 Climb aboard your jeep and be driven inland “off the beaten track” to explore areas of the island untouched by the growing tourist industry, places which have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Pass through small country settlements, green valleys and mountain tracks enabling you to see the island from a new perspective, not as a clubber’s paradise, but as a perfectly preserved environment where Nature holds sway. On this spectacular cosmopolitan island there’s a multitude of fabulous restaurants, atmospheric bars and coffee shops. It’s a great place to join (and observe) an interesting assortment of holiday-makers from all over Europe. Wed, 23 Oct - At sea Thu, 24 Oct - Motril, Spain TOP TIP: Explore the Moorish City of Grenada and the Alhambra The city of Granada, lying at approx. 640 metres above sea level, in the shadow of the mighty Sierra Nevada, is the epitome of Moorish culture in Andalusia. Visit the Summer Palace and country estate of the Moorish rulers of Granada, the ‘Generalife’. Visit the Alhambra, which represents the zenith of Moorish art and architecture. The decorations here must be seen to be believed; from floor to ceiling, every inch seems to be covered with some kind of pattern; geometric, floral or Arabic. Fri, 25 Oct - At sea Sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar The Strait of Gibraltar is only 14 kms wide at its narrowest point, and connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time, it divides Europe from Africa. It has been the subject of myths and legends since ancient times. The Romans believed it marked the end of the world and the entrance to Hades. Hercules is said to have created it by forcing the Atlas Mountains apart. He marked the entrance with two great pillars, one on each shore, and posted a warning—Nothing Lies Beyond. The Pillars of Hercules still stand—the Rock of Gibraltar on the European shoreline and the great mountain of Jabal Musa on the African coast.
Sat, 26 Oct - Safi, Morocco TOP TIP: Reveal Safi’s Portuguese History Occupied by the Portuguese during the 16th century, Safi is home to the Kechla, the former citadel now housing the National Ceramics Museum. For panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean, visit Qasr al-Bahr. Built in the early 16th century by the Portuguese, this massive fortress enforced the Portuguese authority, housed the town governor, and protected the port. Sun, 27 Oct - Casablanca, Morocco TOP TIP: Absorb the Vibrant City of Marrakesh Journey through the desert to the 11th-century city of Marrakesh. The city famous for its palaces and gardens and a fascinating Djem el Fna marketplace where snake charmers, jugglers, acrobats, fire-eaters and fortune-tellers crowd the streets. Tour the magnificent Hassan II Mosque, see the Habous Quarter’s Arab-Islamic architecture and view the Royal Palace. Mon, 28 Oct - Tangier, Morocco TOP TIP: Walk through the Medina and Souks of Tetouan Tetouan has the charm of all small northern Moroccan towns. Set among the giant mountains of the Rif, the town has a unique history. It was a haven for many Muslim and Jewish refugees fleeing from Christian Andalusia and was later occupied by the Spanish for almost two centuries. Tetouan is truly a multicultural melting pot and this is reflected in its architecture which is a wonderful mixture of Spanish and Moorish styles. Tue, 29 Oct - Cadiz, Spain TOP TIP: Step Back in Time in Seville Seville, the capital of Andalusia is a unique, compact and relaxing city with a rich cultural heritage, and has always been seen as a symbol of tolerance between Roman, Arabic, Jewish and Christian cultures. Make sure to visit the Alcazar, a 14th century fortress palace built in the Moorish style by the Christian King, Peter the Cruel, in the Moorish style. The 15th century Cathedral of Seville is reputed to be the 3rd largest in the world. The imposing 98 metres bell tower, known as La Giralda, was once the minaret of a mosque located on the site
in former times. The Cathedral also houses the resting place of the explorer Christopher Columbus. And, of course, some of the most colourful (and best) markets in Europe are in Cadiz and Seville. This is a wonderfully historic part of Iberia - laid-back, photogenic and unforgettable! Cadiz is a particularly ancient port, historic home to the Spanish Navy and base for 16th century Spanish global maritime exploration and trade. Wed, 30 Oct - At sea Thu, 31 Oct - Lisbon, Portugal The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of history. Spreading out along the right bank of the Tagus, its downtown, the Baixa, is located in the 18th-century area around Rossio. The Alfama, one of the oldest quarters in Lisbon, still retains much of its original layout since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755.
