UGANDA THE PEARL OF AFRICA
Winston Churchill famously referred to Uganda as the Pearl of Africa - how true! Astride the Equator, the country is home to a unique physical landscape of rivers, lakes and stunning mountains, providing the ideal habitat for its diverse wildlife.
Another highlight of Uganda is the source of the famous Nile River, exiting from Lake Victoria to begin the long journey northwards to the Mediterranean via Egypt. Discovered by John Speke in 1862, the source of the Nile is yet another experience to cherish. This exclusively designed tour provides a golden opportunity to be your very own modern day explorer.
Where else but in this uniquely lush destination can you observe treeclimbing lions, track both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas through rainforest undergrowth, then navigate tropical channels teeming with hippos and spectacular birdlife? Less environmental pressures and tourist numbers make Uganda’s natural conditions ideal for wildlife viewing. Discover these truly magnificent African ‘gems’, where you will be welcomed with heart-warming hospitality by the people, and experience the awesome grandeur of the environment.
We look forward to you joining us on what could truly be a life-changing travel experience!

ENTEBBE
For those travellers who consider the Gorilla trek too strenuous, please treat this day as a leisure camp day. You can participate in the Gorilla presentation and talks and can enjoy being in Bwindi without the trek. The cost of the Gorilla Permit will be deducted from your tour cost if you choose a leisure day, whilst the others are with the Gorillas. Please advise at the time of booking.
There are few experiences in life that will rival the sighting of a family of mountain gorillas high in the rainforest mountains of Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of only two prime locations in the world suitable for the tracking of these fascinating creatures. One can be found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, while the other is found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Recent estimates suggest fewer than 900 mountain gorillas remain in the wild.
Mountain gorillas are descendants of ancestral monkeys and apes, found in Africa and Arabia dating back some 24-34 million years. Adult males are called silverbacks because a saddle of grey or silver-colored hair develops on their backs with ge. The hair on their backs is shorter than on most other body parts, and their arm hair is especially long. Fully erect, males can reach 1.9 m in height, with an arm span of 2.3 m and weigh up to 220 kg. Like all great apes other than humans, its arms are longer than its legs. It moves by ‘knuckle-walking’, supporting its weight on the backs of its curved fingers, rather than its palms.
The mountain gorilla is most active between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Many of these hours are spent eating, as large quantities of food are needed to sustain its massive bulk. It forages for food in early morning, rests in the middle of the day, and forages again in the afternoon before resting at night. Each gorilla builds a nest from
MOUNTAIN GORILLAS OF BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST
surrounding vegetation to sleep in, constructing a new one every evening. Only infants sleep in the same nest as their mothers. They leave their sleeping sites when the sun rises at around 6 am. When it is cold and overcast, they often choose to stay longer in their nests. The mountain gorilla habitat ranges in altitude from 2,200 –4,300 metres. Vegetation is very dense at the bottom of their mountain home, becoming more sparse at higher elevations. The forests where the mountain gorilla lives are often cloudy, misty and cool.
The mountain gorilla is highly social and lives within relatively stable, cohesive groups held together by long-term bonds between adult males and females. Relationships among females are relatively weak. The dominant silverback generally determines the movements of the group, leading it to appropriate feeding sites throughout the year. He also mediates conflicts within the group and protects it from external threats. When the group is threatened by humans, leopards, or other gorillas, the silverback will protect them even at the cost of his own life. He is the centre of attention during rest sessions, and young animals frequently stay close to him and include him in their games. If a mother dies or leaves the group, the silverback is usually the one who looks after her abandoned offspring, even sometimes allowing them to sleep in his nest.
When the dominant silverback dies or is killed by disease, accident, or poachers, the family group may be severely disrupted. Unless he leaves behind a male descendant capable of taking over his position, the group will either split up or be taken over in its entirety by an unrelated male. When a new silverback takes control of a family group, he may kill all of the infants of the diceased silverback. This practice of infanticide is an effective reproductive strategy, in that the newly acquired females are then able to conceive the new male’s offspring. Mountain gorillas are listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List and are dependent on conservation efforts to survive.
Our journey to the Bwindi Impenertrable Forest is fascinating, and can be a little physically challenging. The sight of a family of mountain gorillas at rest or play will remain with you forever.
There are only a limited number of trek passes made available each day and we have been fortunate to acquire eleven for this tour. See these amazing creatures in the wild while you and we still can!
OUR INCREDIBLE ITINERARY

ENTEBBE, UGANDA
Arriving today at Entebbe (Uganda) from Dubai, we will be met and transferred to our hotel. Entebbe lies on the Equator, and is probably the most centrally located place on the continent. The international airport itself has been the site of some internationally-famous historic events, and was Africa’s largest airport during colonial times. This vibrant city sits on a beautiful peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second largest freshwater lake. A special Welcome Dinner awaits tonight.

MURCHISON FALLS
NATIONAL PARK
A wonderful drive day of informal wildlife viewing in one of the best Parks in Uganda. We hit the road early for our long drive into the beautiful and stunning Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park. This is the location of the famous Murchison Falls, while its surrounding Park is home to 70 mammal and 450 bird species. Three-quarters of all the world’s Rothschild giraffes live here, along with the rare shoebill stork, and a unique antelope called the Ugandan kob.
Four of Africa’s famous ‘Big Five’ (all but the rhino), can be seen in the northern park area (above the Nile). Over 600 chimpanzees live in the mahogany forests of the Park The rare white rhino is being bred at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, 70km south of the park. Their mission is to reintroduce small herds of rhinos (around five at a time) while retaining a nucleus breeding herd in the sanctuary.

Day 4 - monday, 14 august
MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK
After plummeting 43 metres, the waters of the Victoria Nile at Murchison Falls flow 30kms sedately westwards towards Lake Albert. The river banks are dense with birdlife, hippos, waterbuck, crocodiles and buffaloes. We spend a full day exploring the Falls area, including game drives and a peaceful cruise downstream of these impressive falls. This area is
famous as a source of the iconic Nile River which flows from here all the way (via Egypt) to the Mediterranean Sea. During our morning game drive, we’ll be on the lookout for elephant, lion, cape buffalo, spotted hyena, Rothschild giraffe, and possibly even a leopard.
After returning to the lodge for lunch, we’ll enjoy a cruise on the Nile upstream to the base of the Falls, stopping just a few metres from the ‘Devil’s Cauldron’ where the Nile forces its way through a gap in the rocks only a few metres wide. This water outflow from Lake Victoria sends around 300 cubic metres per second of water over the Falls, which is then squeezed into a gorge less than ten metres wide!! The pressure is immense - and is the reason the Falls are known as the ‘world’s most powerful’.
Accommodation: Nile Safari Lodge

Day 5 - tuesday, 15 august KIBALE
Spectacular Rift Valley landscapes. This morning we drive to Kasese town, passing through fertile agricultural land in the shadows of one of Africa’s largest mountain ranges – namely the spectacular glacial peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. An area of rich biodiversity, there are over 50 crater lakes, a wide range of forest birds, tea plantations, and a vibrant local culture. As we drive through the moist evergreen rainforest, there’s a sense of freshness, the fragrance of endemic flowers, and the musty scents of monkey troops in the forest canopy.
On the way to Kasese we transit through the quaint roadside village of Hima, and continue on to ‘the garden town’ of Fort Portal, one of Uganda’s most beautiful communities. At 1,500 metres above sea level, Fort Portal is situated in a breathtaking landscape that forms the Albertine Western Rift Valley.

QUEEN
ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
An excellent game vieving day! Today we enter the forest in search of the cheeky Chimpanzees, as well as up to 12 other species of primates. After lunch at the Lodge, we journey on to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This Park features a volcanic landscape, including volcanic cones, deep craters with crater lakes from which salt is extracted. It occupies about 2,000 square kilometres, extending from Lake George to Lake Edward, including the Kazinga Channel that connects the two lakes.
The Park is internationally recognised for its abundant wildlife - hippos, elephants, Ugandan kob, topi, leopard, Nile crocodile, spotted hyena, waterbuck, lions and chimps. Today we embark on a late afternoon game drive to view this wonderful wildlife.
Accommodation: Mweya Safari Lodge

Day 7 - THURSDAY, 17 august
QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
We start our day early with a game drive in the Kasenyi Plains area of Queen Elizabeth National Park - an area of open savannah teaming with wildlife, including lots of Ugandan Kob and different antelope species.
After lunch we enjoy a fabulous cruise on the Kazinga Channel. The Channel is best known for harbouring the highest concentration of hippos on the planet. There’ll be crocodiles, warthogs, elephants, waterbucks and a variety of animals along the banks, as well as prolific birdlife - the African jacana, long-tailed cormorants, pelicans, African shoebills, weaverbirds, pygmy kingfishers, and many others - in big numbers.
Accommodation: Mweya Safari Lodge

Day 8 - FRIDAY, 18 august
ISHASHA
In search for Tree Climbing Lions.
After breakfast we move on to the Ishasha Wilderness area. Our delightful camp is a high-quality tranquil retreat, set on the banks of the Ntungwe River - featuring spacious tented rooms with private verandas that look over beautiful river vistas. Elephants and assorted wildlife pass by on the river banks right in front of our camp. This area is famous for its tree climbing lions, sometimes spotted resting in branches of the huge acacia and sycamore fig trees. It’s very rare for lions to climb trees! This is one of only two lion populations in the whole world that climb trees as a natural part of their daily behaviour - it’s an experience you never forget!
at ground level. The view from the trees is also good for spotting their prey. Lazily lying in the branches, the lions can survey the numerous Uganda kobs (their main prey), that can be seen loitering around the Park. Ishasha is particularly famous for its male tree-climbing lions, that sport black manes - a feature unique to the lions of this area. We enjoy a late afternoon game drive in some of the most unspoilt sectors of Queen Elizabeth National Park, to observe these famous big cats and other exotic wildlife.

Day 9 - SATURDAY, 19 august
BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST Picturesque drive today as we head for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the famous Mountain Gorillas! A 6-hour drive today, through the culturally interesting Ugandan countryside. We travel across a landscape of rolling hills, banana plantations, and past herds of the unique longhorned ankole cattle. Our drive takes us through remote indigenous villages, before reaching the tropical rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in misty mountain valleys along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, next to Virunga National Park and on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. A major source of five rivers that flow into Lake Albert, the Park is most notable for its 460 Bwindi gorillas - half the world’s population of the majestic critically-endangered mountain gorillas. This is one of the only places in the world where chimpanzees and gorillas share the same habitat.
Our atmospheric top-quality accommodation for two nights here is nestled deep inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. After arrival, we take a stroll through the local Buhoma village, giving an insight into the local culture of those living adjacent to the Impenetrable Forest - an opportunity for us to see how resourceful these local residents are. There are hillsides of cultivated tea, and banana plantations around the village. Uganda is literally a ‘banana republic’, producing more bananas than almost any other country on earth. They even produce local beer and distil gin from their bananas! Traditional healers here know how to use forest resources to treat community sickness, and there’s a Batwa Pygmy
community - the original inhabitants of the rainforest. The Batwe lived for 300 years as hunters in the forests before being expelled to make way for the National Parks.

Day 10 - SUNDAY, 20 august
BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST Gorilla trekking day! Let’s go and see the Gorillas.... Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has the highest diversity of tree and fern species in East Africa. There are more than 1,000 flowering plant species. A biodiversity hotspot, this is a forest of outstanding biological richness, surrounded in part by an agricultural landscape that supports one of the highest population densities in tropical Africa.
Wildlife diversity is a feature of the Park. It provides habitat for some 120 different mammal species (of which 10 are primates), hundreds of bird and butterfly species, chameleons, geckos and many other endangered species. As well as the mountain gorillas, it’s also a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, forest elephants, small antelope species, and exotic birds such as hornbills and turacos.
Bwindi is ranked the world’s No.1 mountain gorilla trekking destination - and we’ll be there at the best time of the year to experience them! Today will be the absolute highlight of our tour - a ‘one of a kind’ experience as we encounter these magnificent animals in their own habitat. Herbs, shrubs and vines have grown densely in Bwindi, making a perfectly suitable gorilla habitat. We will spend much of the day learning about these endangered gorillas, and trekking to locate and observe
This will be an exciting, and ultimately exhilarating experience - definitely one you’ll remember for life. Generally, the mountain gorillas live above 3,000 metres altitude. Rangers scout for the Gorillas early each day and our Tracker Guides (using radio & GPS technology) then have a general idea of where to find them - being sedentary creatures, they typically move less than a kilometre a day. We will have an opportunity to be within metres of these magnificent apes, experiencing their day-to-day activities.
(If you do not wish to participate in the Gorilla trek, there will be an alternative, in which case the tour cost will be less the Gorilla Permit fee. You must advise us at time of reservation. TheGorillaPermitFeemustbepaidattimeofreservationand isincludedinthe$5,000tourdeposit.)

LAKE MBURO
After breakfast, we drive through the beautiful scenery surrounding the Kigezi Mountains. The area is often referred to as the ‘Switzerland of Africa’ because of its spectacular mountain scenery and low temperatures. We may enjoy panoramic photo opportunities of terrace farms, volcanic mountains and lakes, as well as having lunch at a local restaurant in Mbarara, before arriving at spectacular Mihingo Lodge in Lake Mburo National Park. The lodge is perched on a rocky kopje (500-million-year-old granite outcrop), with amazing views out over an infinity pool, with a waterhole below that attracts a constant visible stream of local wildlife. Once settled in, a late afternoon game drive awaits us.
Day 12 - TUESDAY, 22 august
LAKE MBURO
Game Drives and Boat Cruise on Lake Mburo. Lake Mburo is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks, but hosts approximately 350 bird species as well as zebra, leopard, hippo, hyena, oribi, waterbuck, topi, reedbuck, civets and jackals. This is the only place where you can spot both Ugandan impala and elands. Lions were eliminated by the indigenous people in the 1980s. Lake Mburo forms part of a 50km-long wetland system linked by a swamp. Today we will explore this compact (but significantly important) National Park, and undertake game drives in search of the varied wildlife.
Five of the 13 lakes in the area lie within the Park’s borders, attracting hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds (pelicans, shoebill storks, fish eagles etc) - 20% of the park’s surface is wetland habitat. The region has a somewhat controversial history, originally settled by Banyankole Bahima pastoralists who traditionally herd ankole cattle. We have a leisurely boat cruise on Lake Mburo where we will be on the lookout for diverse birdlife and the resident hippo population.
Accommodation: Mihingo Lodge Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 13 - WEDNESDAY, 23 august
LAKE VICTORIA
We will have time to relax in our fabulous lodge accommodation this morning before we take the road journey back to Entebbe. During the return trip along the Masaka Highway, we stop briefly at the village of Kayabwe, site of Uganda’s best-known Equator monument. Uganda topography is so diverse that it’s one of the very few countries where it’s possible to swim (in lake Victoria), walk, run and/or fly across the Equator! At least you’ll be able to stand with one foot in each hemisphere! Because it’s the centre of gravity for the whole world, your body at the Equator actually feels 3% lighter than your normal weight! It’s also true that water swirls in opposite directions in the northern and southern hemispheres either side of the Equator line. There’ll be time to visit the art and handicraft shops in Kayabwe, before continuing to Entebbe. Tonight, we’ll enjoy our very special last evening in Uganda on Lake Victoria.
The colourful culture of the friendly Luo people exists in many of the shoreline villages. We’ll cruise out towards the Equator and the lake’s many islands while local fisherman cast their nets. One of Africa’s great lakes, Lake Victoria is divided between three countries - Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, The only significant outflow from the lake is the White Nile, the longest tributary of the famous Nile River. We’ll share drinks and snacks with our fellow travellers as the picturesque red African sun sinks slowly out of view over the lake.
Accommodation: Protea Hotel, Entebbe Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 14 - THURSDAY, 24 august ENTEBBE
We leave our hotel this morning to explore Entebbe (pop about 67,000), the original seat of power in colonial times. In 1976, this very pleasant lakeside city was the site of an infamous ‘Entebbe Raid’, when Israeli paratroopers completed an audacious passenger rescue of a hi-jacked Air France flight that had been diverted to Entebbe. This morning we’ll visit the beautiful lakeside Botanical Gardens, which also contains a strong bird population and several primates including the black-and-white colobus and white-tailed monkey. Also on our agenda is the Ugandan Wildlife Education Centre and a nearby traditional fishing village, before we are transferred to the airport for our Emirates flight out of Africa.
