destination experiences being offered and new cruise ships taking to the high seas. Just recently saw the exciting launches of the Crystal Debussy and Viking Sun, with Symphony of the Seas and Norwegian Bliss also taking to the waters very soon. Luxury small ship expedition cruising seems to be the hot topic at the moment as we look forward to the launches of 4 boutique expedition ships from Ponant, and the stunning new Scenic Eclipse. Here at Travel Masters and The Travel Studio we have also had a memorable start to 2018, collecting the Brand Support Award at the recent CruiseCo Awards, along with a nomination for Agency Promotion of the Year at the 2017 CLIA Awards for our annual Cruise Sale Day.

We have a new member of the team join us at Travel Masters as we welcome Liz to the agency. Liz comes to us with over 20 years’ experience in the Travel Industry and lists North America and Europe as her specialist destinations. There is so much happening in the world or travel currently, so this edition of the Wanderings has been stretched out to 12 pages full of travel ideas and inspiration to help you plan your next holiday. N LONDON O S U C FO IN A ROYAL WEDDING YEAR! LONDON is the political, economic and cultural capital of the United Kingdom, and its world class tourist attractions are renowned across the globe. With 30 historic gardens and 123 historic buildings, London also has more than 200 museums, 600 cinema screens, and 108 music halls. London's 33 boroughs, including the City of London, are spread over an area of 1572 square kms. The River Thames runs through the heart of London, from Richmond in the west, through the central London borough of Westminster, to Greenwich in the east. London's history stretches back over thousands of years, and the city boasts four World Heritage Sites: the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The biggest day in London’s calendar this year is the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, due to take place in May at Windsor Castle, just a few miles outside London. The City will once again erupt in the ‘’pomp and circumstance’’ that makes royal occasions such as this viewed on television sets and mobile devices all over the world. So if a trip to London is on your plans, and would like to experience some “Royal Treatment”, where do you stay? Here are our choice of two of the very best historical hotels to enjoy afternoon tea and soak up the regal atmosphere…

The Goring

The Corinthia London

The Goring stands out from the crowd as London’s last family-owned luxury hotel, with over a hundred years of passion for hospitality and commitment to service. The Goring’s staff are trained to the highest standards of hospitality. Built in 1910, The Goring has been lovingly run by the Goring family since its inception. A visionary, Otto Goring saw great promise in a plot of land situated at the Buckingham Palace end of what today is known as Beeston Place. After removing a public house and several cottages, the path was laid clear for the last grand hotel of the Edwardian era – The Goring. Opened in 1910 this historic hotel was finally complete, along with en-suite facilities and central heating in each and every bedroom – widely believed to be a world first. Today, The Goring remains a favourite address and hidden gem for anyone seeking out that impeccably English luxury hotel in the centre of London.

Originally built as the Metropole Hotel, it acted as the gathering point for competitors in the first London to Brighton run in 1896. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII entertained guests at the hotel on various occasions using the Royal Suite, thought to have been the first rooms fronting Whitehall Place. The hotel’s location near the Palace of Westminster and Whitehall Place meant it was commandeered in both World Wars. The Goring has been a firm Royal favourite for many years, since it first opened its doors. The coronations of George VI & Her Majesty The Queen saw the hotel filled with royalty from all over the world. The Queen Mother also famously enjoyed Eggs Drumkilbo – a lobster and egg-based dish that remains one of the most popular dishes in The Dining Room. In 1990, George Goring accepted an O.B.E. from Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace for ‘services to the hotel industry’. This was followed by the appointment of a Royal Warrant to The Goring in 2013 - the only hotel to have been awarded a Royal Warrant for hospitality services. Royal Warrants of Appointment are a mark of recognition to those who supply goods or services to the Households of Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh or His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Book The Goring Hotel with Travel Masters or The Travel Studio, and receive the following added benefits: • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability • Continental breakfast daily, for up to two in room guests • $100 USD Equivalent Food & Beverage credit, in The Goring Dining Room • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability • Complimentary Wi-Fi

After the Second World War it was purchased by the Ministry of Defence and used as government houses until it was declared surplus to requirements and sold. In 2007 it was extensively restored and reopened as one of London’s finest hotels. Combining traditional grandeur with modern freshness, the luxuriously redesigned Victorian destination is ideally located in the heart of London. Corinthia London provides a superb ground floor including the elegant British restaurant The Northall, the vibrant Massimo Restaurant & Bar offering modern Italian cuisine, and the musically inspired Bassoon Bar. The heart of the hotel is its Crystal Moon Lounge, where guests can take afternoon tea or enjoy an evening cocktail. Perfectly positioned in the heart of London, the hotel is within easy walking distance of Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery, the Southbank Centre, and the London Eye. Book The Corinthia London Hotel with Travel Masters or The Travel Studio, and receive the following added benefits: • Buffet breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability • 85 GBP Hotel Credit to be utilised during stay • Guaranteed flexible check-in/check-out • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Feel transported back in time as you traverse by foot the quiet country roads, connecting honey-coloured villages & bustling market towns. Your experience of this iconic region of England is one you’re sure not to forget.

SRI LANKA

Each month we like to focus on a Virtuoso partner of Travel Masters and The Travel Studio, and what makes them stand out from the crowd…. The Butterfield & Robinson difference is the best biking and walking routes in the world’s most incredible places (and they should know— they’ve been discovering them for over 50 years!). It is the most capable and genuinely friendly guides you’ll find anywhere. It is the most interesting hotels the region has to offer (of course, by “hotels” they mean castles, riads, ryokans…you get the idea). It’s amazing culinary experiences, stateof-the-art equipment, great wines at dinner, a water bottle that’s always full, suggestions you won’t find in any guidebook, and an experience you simply can’t get anywhere else. At Butterfield & Robinson, they have elevated the craft of planning adventures to an art form. They have created their very own standard of travel, far exceeding the norm, for one simple reason: when your time is precious, and you’re travelling half way around the world, they think you deserve a journey that moves you—and surprises you—at every turn. Butterfield & Robinson meticulously map out easy-to-follow route notes for their trips. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, they promise nothing short of spectacular (think quiet country lanes, glorious vistas and, often, being the only ones in sight). Their guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? Ask and you shall receive. Worried about the pace? Don’t be – “She’s on her third descent”. “He’s on his third cappuccino”. There’s no such thing as “off the pace” when you set it yourself. This is one of the joys of travelling with B&R. You go as fast or as slowly as you want. So, if you like the idea of an easy paced, meticulously planned, incredible biking or walking experience in over 50 countries across the globe, speak to Travel Masters or The Travel Studio for more details on Butterfield & Robinsons comprehensive range of tours…

MARCH, APRIL OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2018 Golden beaches, hilltop rock temples, lush rainforests, vanished empires and stunning highland tea plantations make up the colourful mosaic that is Sri Lanka, all of it hiding in plain sight to discover. Let the island pull you in as you become one with this legendary nation.

The Luxury of Crystal

travelnewsletter

In

February 2018 I was privileged to experience the lovely 'Crystal Serenity', from Sydney to Cairns. From the moment you arrive at the Cruise Terminal, you know that cruising on a Crystal ship is a very special kind of experience. You are immediately looked after with bottles of water, luggage assistance and so forth, from dedicated Crystal staff. Friendly and efficient fast-track check-in whisks guests aboard after security clearance. Crystal ships embrace a world of authentic discovery, offering exceptional experiences and personal connections, matched with the finest of luxuries. They cater for those seeking a holiday adventure, and for the discerning guest who wants only the best but in a comfortable relaxed environment. They certainly know how to turn on the 'Wow Factor' for guests!

Lola Schema The Travel Studio

Life on board a Crystal ship is never dull! Plenty to do, as much as you want to do. No one is stuffy or overly reserved – in fact the opposite. I found Crystal guests generally to be highly educated and well-travelled, very friendly and socially interactive. They are keen to participate, for instance, in physical activities and the enrichment program. Crystal provide on-board a Life Spa & Salon, a Computer University At Sea, Fitness Centre, a Creative Learning Institute of classes and workshops, and many innovative options. These ships are for those who love life!

band. Ambassador Hosts (well-travelled gentlemen) are employed on every cruise to dance and socialise with female solo travellers and those who love to dance. After the excellent Broadway-inspired entertainment, for the latenight owls there’s a funky night club with a world class DJ at the helm! Of course, nibbles and canapes are always available, even if it is very late! A superior standard of service is at the heart of the Crystal Experience! These staff are incredible and do not hesitate to interact with guests respectfully and enthusiastically at all times.

T

here are many gorgeous bars and lounges in which to share a drink or two, and a laugh with fellow guests. Understated contemporary elegance is everywhere. Multiple entertainment options spring to life in the evenings, including, of course, a dance

Brazilian inspired restaurant, for meat lovers! Throughout the ship there's exceptional Michelin-inspired cuisine, plus lots of healthy choices (and small servings if you prefer). Crystal are one of the few cruise lines that still employ sommeliers to advise on selecting from the many inclusive wines featured onboard. The Bar fridge in your stateroom is always stocked with soft drinks, water, juices, beers and if you prefer wines or champagne, just dial your phone and it is delivered without hesitation.

'Crystal Serenity' will shortly welcome exciting new restaurants including the Chinese inspired 'Silk', and ‘'Umi Uma and Sushi Bar’' – Nobu Matsuhisa’s only 'at sea' restaurant in his eponymous empire. Completing the line-up will be 'Churrascaria' – trendy new

Your generously-appointed stateroom offers a sanctuary of comfort and calm, featuring luxury amenities. All guests enjoy free, unlimited WiFi featuring the 'Crystal Connect' guest portal with Internet and shipboard information accessible on all devices. Ultra-thin interactive TVs are installed in all staterooms. All gratuities aboard and ashore are included in your cruise fare.

rystal Cruises have carved out an enviable name for themselves in the world of luxury cruising - the Best of the Best, Always! The finest of everything! Inherent in the Crystal Experience are the nuanced underpinnings of luxury. You enter a world of shimmering refinement and Crystal's acclaimed cuisine. Those of you who seek the best travel experiences, should really check out Crystal! Lola Scherma

Sharing the limelight with her fleetmate, Crystal Serenity is one of two magnificent ships that has earned Crystal Cruises the distinction of being The World's Most Awarded Luxury Cruise Line. Inspired by the casual-yet-cultured vibe of southern California, Crystal Serenity boasts a chic and contemporary style featuring several cruise industryfirsts including a chef's herb garden as part of vibrant "vertical walls" of greenery. EL TRANSCANTABRICO GRAN LUJO 8 days | San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostela & vice versa journeys April - October 2018 departures Across the North

of Spain

“Thanks for a wonderful trip, I really enjoyed the entire experience” - Kath “Harbin was a great destination & Neil a very competent tour leader along with local guides” – Meridee & Fred

From San Sebastián in the east to Santiago de Compostela in the west, this route shadows in part the classic St James’ Way. In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum is a major attraction. The journey in El Transcantabrico allows privileged viewing of (and visits to) the often dramatic countryside. Religious and secular architecture highlights the history of the region, Romans to the present; Upper Paleolithic cave paintings remind us of the lives of earliest humans. The tour has an impressive climax - Santiago de Compostela and its Cathedral.
