About the tour

About the tour Hello and welcome to the RMB Namibia Ride for Rhinos! We are so glad that you could join us on this amazing adventure into the Namibian wilderness! The goal of this tour is not only to raise funds for Save the Rhino Trust Namibia, IRDNC and Children in the Wilderness, but also to raise awareness about their efforts and difficulties. These entities operate in a remote, rugged area of more than a million hectares – with few fences, no national park status and no controls over who goes in or out. Over the past thirty years, the rhino population in this region has rebounded from the point of near extinction to a level that all Namibians can be proud of.

Some logistics The tour takes place from 22 to 26 June 2022, with the 22nd being a 'travel to' day and the 26th a 'travel back' day. Riders will make their own way to Damaraland. The group will meet up at Fonteine Farm, near Wilderness Safaris’ Damaraland Camp. See directions and map attached. If you are willing to give a fellow rider a lift north or need a lift for yourself and your bicycle, please let the tour organisers know so that everyone does not have to travel all the way by themselves. You can contact Elzanne directly at 081 367 3583 or elzanne@venture.com.na, or have a chat with your fellow riders. Cars will be securely parked at Fonteine Farm for the duration of the trip. Arrival time at Fonteine Farm is between 15:00 and 17:00 on arrival day. You will be transferred from there to our Ride for Rhinos bush camp. See the packing lists in this information pack for detailed instructions.

Itinerary Arrival Day (22 June): Arrive at Fonteine Farm between 15:00 and 17:00. We spend the first night getting to know one another and prepping for the adventure to come. Cars are parked and bikes gets dropped at the Fonteine Camp site where we start our ride on the first morning. Each day will have 2 formal water stops with smaller stops along the way. Each rider should take about 1 or 2 bottles of water or a small camel back. We are never far away from the vehicles and ride about and hour to an hour and a half before meeting a vehicle so you can top up again. Please ensure you have basic spares (ie plugs and your multi-tool) to take along in case we have an issue along the way. Day 1 (23 June): We start on the vehicles and drive up to the bikes. We start with a long fast descent past Slangpos, cross the Huab River heading south onto open plains looping back to the Huab, visiting Pete's pools when we cross the Huab again. The ride then heads uphill to Krone and its amazing sandstone formations to the Ride for Rhinos camp. Total distance 38km with 350m of climbing. Day 2 (24 June): This is a hilly day! We leave camp going past Lang duin and cross the Huab heading towards Mikberg and back down towards the Aba Huab. The bicycles sleep out in the evening in the general vicinity of De Riet. We return to camp with the vehicles. Total distance 33km with 505m of climbing. Day 3 (25 June): We head back to the bikes and start riding past the village of De Riet – (Riemvasmaker village). We cross lovely open plains and go over the Aba Huab and Huab rivers along this route. After the Huab River crossing we start climbing, first heading toward Vrede (Village) and then up to Damaraland Camp itself. Total distance 33km with 580m climbing. Day 4 (26 June): An optional early morning short ride is set out for those who are keen for one last stretch, otherwise you can enjoy a leisurely morning and breakfast. From here we will transfer you back to your vehicle and the Ride for Rhino adventurers can make their way back home, hopefully with a smile on their face and a heart full of warm memories of a wonderful Namibian mountain-biking adventure, already excited for next year’s tour!
