CITHNyPacIFIc

The Cath^y Pacific story H#{SH It all began with the entrepreneurial vision of two former World War ll pilots, American Roy Farrell and Australian Sydney de Kantzow m&ffi iEtt# -,XEFttrE ffi Hfi * E # Hi Roy Farre |tflEiltl# fti Syd n ey de Kantzow' lEff €* IEJ EIEIEE, H:e|| - ffi H#- E |

AFTER WORLD WAR ll, Roy Farrell and Sydney de Kantzow spotted an opportunity to start passenger and cargo flights out of Shanghai. Early in t946, they moved their enterprise to Hong Kong and in September ofthe same year, paid H K$r apiece to register the airline. They named it Cathay Pacific Airways: Cathay, the ancient name for China, and Pacific, because the far-sighted Farrell speculated that one day the airline might fly across the ocean. The fledgling airline consisted ofjust two US Army surplus DC3 aircraft: Betsy and Niki. By :.948, Cathay Pacific was serving Rangoon, Singapore, Bangkok, Maniia and Macau, with a fleet ofseven DC3s and one Catalina flying boat. In

the same year, a majority shareholding

was the world's first airline to take delivery of the Rolls-Royce-powered 87 47 - 4o o in ry8g, bringing destinations such as Vancouver, London and Los Angeles within nonstop range. In r995 Cathay Pacific introduced Airbus A33o-3oos and A34o-3oos to the fleet and in 1998 became the launch customer ofthe new Boeing777-3oo - the world's largest twinengine commercial aircraft. In zooz, the airline introduced its first ultra-long-haul Airbus A34o-6oo and is currently expanding its fleet with the purchase of3o Boeing 777-3ooER

747-4ooERFs and ro new-generation Boeing 747-8Fsbeing delivered by the end ofzorz. Cathay Pacific City, the company's regional headquarters at Hong Kong International Airport, was completed in mid-r999. ln zooz, Cathay Pacific and DHL becamejoint venture partners in Air Hong Kong, which now has a fleet ofeight Airbus 3oo freighter aircraft and an expanding regional network for express overnight cargo deliveries. In zoo6, Cathay Pacific celebrated its 6oth anniversary and cemented its position in the region with an agreement that brought Dragonair into the group as a wholly owned subsidiary. The deal created a synergy ofenergies by bringing together Cathay Pacifi c's international operation with Dragonair's extensive network, which now includes more than t5 cities in Mainland China. At the same time, Cathay Pacific established a closer relationship with Air China, with each airline taking a 17.5 percent stake in the other. More information on Cathay Pacific is available on our websire:

"Extended Range" aircraft that will form the backbone ofits long-haul passenger fleet in the years to come. Cathay Pacific is also investing heavily in its freighter fleet, with six Boeing

was acquired by Hong Kong trading company Butterfield & Swire and under the aggressive

leadership of its Chairman, J.K. Swire, Cathay Pacific continued to grow. At the time, Swire was already well established as the city's leading airline agency, having founded Pacific Air Maintenance, which later became Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. In 1949, the airline acquired its first fourengine aircraft, a Douglas DC4 Skymaster, followed by its first pressurised aircraft, the DC6, in 1955. Under Swire management, the airline entered a period ofrapid expansion. By t959, Cathay Pacific's growing regional network included Australia and Japan, and in 1962 the airline entered the jet age with the arrival of its first General Dynamics Convair 88o. The r97o decision to equip with Boeing 7o7s opened the door to long-range flights, setting Cathay Pacific on course for services to the Middle East in 1976, enabling the airline to enter the lucrative air-cargo sector. The airline updated its regional fleet with wide-bodied Lockheed Lrorr TriStars and, with the delivery

ofits first Boeing747-zoo, inaugurated a Hong Kong-London service in r98o. Cathay Pacific

Beloved Betsy PF'Betsy Our first aircraft "Betsy", a converted Douglas DC3, is remembered fondly. Betsy's first flight, in February 1946, carried clothes from Sydney to Shanghai. At different times, Betsy has carried passengers, oysters and even day-old chicks. Sold in 1955, Betsy was discovered almost

3o years later flying cargo around the Australian

outback. We bought the aircraft back, repainted her in the original r94os livery and returned her to Hong Kong. Today, Betsy is suspended from the ceiling at the Hong Kong Science Museum. Betsy.r Htlfr tsff DCa4E#il*mEt' EE*S 4E+AEBfrtE4FES€ffi . B etsyttrg46FzE H r
