or travellers with a love of cruising, a visit to the Arctic or Antarctic represents the ultimate journey. The polar regions have a dramatic history of exploration and maritime adventure, and promise up-close encounters with remote, ice-encrusted landscapes. Along with an abundance of opportunities to spot wildlife, from Svalbard polar bears to Antarctic penguins or Alaskan bald eagles, the very inaccessibility of the Arctic and Antarctic also makes them a good match for cruising. Unlike mainstream cruise destinations, there’s simply no other way to visit—unless you’re Bear Grylls. What’s more, the harsh but spectacular environment provides a feeling of hardcore adventure without an explorer’s pain, since cruise ships supply considerable luxury here at the cold ends of the earth. It’s no surprise, then, that there is rising interest in polar cruising. Over 40 ships, ranging from luxe yachts to converted icebreakers, now visit the Antarctic each year, disembarking some 30,000 guests. Only ships carrying a maximum 200 guests are allowed to make landings in this fragile environment. However, annually thousands of other guests now glimpse the white continent, as larger ships from the likes of Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line sail by. An impressive number of new ships will be cruising both polar regions soon. Lindblad Expeditions has a new 100-guest ship this year and one next year, and luxe line Ponant, which matches remote locations with French fine dining and understated chic, has announced four new ice-class expedition ships from 2018. Mid-2018 will also see the arrival of Crystal Cruises’ new ship Crystal Endeavor. Announced as ‘the world’s largest megayacht’, she’s upping the ante in luxury adventure by carrying a mini-submarine and a helicopter. Silversea, meanwhile, is redeploying its newly refurbished Silver Cloud to its expedition fleet from November. Among her itineraries will be a Classic Antarctica cruise in February 2018 that visits the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, with Zodiac excursions to visit penguin and elephant seal colonies, and to get up close to Paradise Bay’s spectacular glaciers and icebergs. Ponant now has 16 seasonal departures to the Antarctic, including a new Journey in Southern Lands cruise, taking in remote southern Atlantic islands such as Tristan da Cunha and Nightingale Island. The Falklands, South Georgia and the South Shetlands are popular ports of call on Antarctic cruises. 4 SPRING 2017

Fly-cruise options are becoming more common to these islands, saving sailing time and potential seasickness on rough seas. The retreat of ice in the Antarctic is pushing sailing limits, especially in the Ross Sea south-east of New Zealand. Smaller expedition companies now visit Mawson’s Huts, where the approach was formerly blocked by icebergs, and the Bay of Whales, home to Roald Amundsen’s base, and further south than most ships have previously ventured. Also in that region, the subantarctic islands, with their vast colonies of seals and penguins, can be visited with upmarket companies such as Ponant. northern Canada opened up for the first time to a large cruise ship, and the journey has since become almost a staple, tackled by mainstream companies such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Crystal Cruises. Now attention has turned—at least among small ship companies—to Russia’s Northeast Passage. As a result, it’s now possible to link back-to-back cruise itineraries together for a full circumnavigation of the Arctic. Quark Expeditions, meanwhile, has its gaze on the Kennedy Channel between Canada and Greenland; it hopes ice conditions will soon allow a successful crossing. In the summer of 2017, Quark had its biggest season in the Arctic with some 20 itineraries. It’s far from alone, however. Ponant now has 15 Arctic cruises, Lindblad Expeditions has eight, and many small adventure companies are offering new routes. Big-ship companies are increasing their Iceland visits too. In August 2018, for example, Holland America Line’s MS Zuiderdam will spend eight days in Iceland as part of its

30-night cruise from Copenhagen to New York. It then calls in at three ports in Greenland and cruises glacier-studded Prince Christian Sound. Iceland is particularly seeing a surge in visits. Among many itineraries is a 9-night circumnavigation of the island, round trip from Reykjavik in July 2018, on Lindblad Expeditions’ National Geographic Explorer. Highlights include the immense Látrabjarg cliffs with their incredible seabird colonies, the remote Westfjords, and a snowmobile adventure on the Vatnajökull icecap. Among other northern polar destinations attracting more cruise arrivals are Greenland, Norway’s Svalbard islands (which are noted for large populations of polar bears) and the Russian Far East, which has scenery to rival Alaska and wildlife such as bears and musk oxen. A few big cruise lines such as Princess Cruises visit briefly on Japan itineraries, but expedition companies such as Silversea and Ponant have a more comprehensive focus. In another notable trend, cruises to both the Arctic and Antarctic are getting more adventurous. Some are targeting the family market, while others are courting younger age groups and the active with shore-excursion activities such as snorkelling, skiing and even hot-air ballooning. Seabourn has even introduced kayaking cruises to the Antarctic for close-up encounters with icebergs and sea life. Journeys on ice have never been so cool. n

W
hen anyone mentions adventure and expedition cruising, the first name to come to mind is invariably Lindblad Expeditions - National Geographic. Regarded by the travel industry as the modern pioneers of expedition cruising, the New York-based company celebrated 50 years since its groundbreaking first tourist cruise to Antarctica. Since then, Lindblad has partnered 8 SPRING 2017
with the National Geographic Society (from 2004) and expanded its operations to 13 ships and dozens of unique itineraries in every corner of the globe. The stalwart cruise line, among the best expedition leaders in the business, has always boasted adventurous itineraries and industryleading enrichment programs. So much so that when any new contender enters the realm of expedition cruising, Lindblad is the benchmark by which it needs to measure itself. In 2013, Lindblad acquired the Orion Expedition Cruises along with luxury vessel National Geographic Orion. Built in Germany in 2003, it became the newest vessel in the
fleet at the time. Since then, the 2005-built National Geographic Endeavour II has been acquired for full-time Galapagos duties. Each accommodates around 100 guests only. Just this year, Lindblad proudly launched the first of its two newbuild vessels in many years, with National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture set to replace the much-loved pair of National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion on itineraries in Alaska and Central America. Built at the same US shipyard as the vessels they will replace, the identical pair will also accommodate 100 guests (up from 62) as well as introduce greater comfort and more

When Viking Sky was christened in June, its Norwegian owners chose Tromsø for the ceremony. The city in Norway’s far north sits 400 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle, gazes on a snow-capped mountain range and has long looked to the fjords for trade and fishing. This is a city made for celebration too, with 9,000 university students and a sun that glimmers long into its summer nights. In this former land of Vikings, it was an inspired port of choice to launch Viking Cruises’ latest ship. Viking Sky is sister ship to Viking Sea and Viking Star and carries 930 guests. Although Viking Sky avoids making bold claims about luxury, she outdoes some luxury ships in providing uncrowded public areas, stylish decor and all-inclusive fares that cover all restaurants, wine with meals, Wi-Fi access and room service. A shore excursion is included in each port, plus an add-on choice of others. You won’t find the glitz and loud action of megaships on Viking Sky. Rather, you’re invited to relax in the three-storey lounge, with its
bookcases, games tables and occasional live music, or curl up on a sofa in the Explorer’s Lounge with a post-dinner drink and a view of Norway’s mountains. All staterooms feature king-size beds (or twins), private verandahs and a sitting area, along with agreeable luxuries in bathrooms, such as heated floors, gushing showers and anti-mist mirrors. As everywhere on the ship, the design is pared-back, no-fuss Scandinavian in muted colours, emphasising light and natural materials such as birch wood, slate and leather. Public spaces have their moments of extravagance, such as Mario Bellini and Frank Gehry chairs, or the eye-catching infinity pool cantilevered off the stern. This is a beautiful ship, but Viking Cruises sensibly realises it’s destinations that count too. It focuses on day-long stays in port and occasional overnights, and emphasises learning and local culture. Expect regional music and cuisine, and enrichment lectures from experts while on board.

Guests are mostly on the young side of retired, well-educated and curious about the places they visit. One of Viking Sky’s key cruises is the 14-night Into the Midnight Sun itinerary between London and Bergen by way of the remote Orkney and Shetland islands in Scotland and a bedazzlement of fjords. Your first encounter with Norway could hardly be better: the Lofoten Islands provide some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes. Sheer mountain peaks rise from the sea, cupping verdant farmland that once sheltered the Vikings. The brightly painted houses of cod fishermen overlook windswept beaches under a vast, pale-blue sky scudded with clouds. The colours of Lofoten’s bays are disconcertingly tropical in their intensity. Sailing into ports of call at Tromsø and Molde also provides panoramas of snow-capped peaks, pine-topped islands and shimmering sea. he mystique of ‘the Orient’ has bewitched seafarers for centuries. Since 2013, the number of Asian port calls has doubled, demonstrating both guest and cruise line desires, and world-class infrastructure is being built to accommodate the growing demand. In the last few years alone, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai have introduced space-age terminals exclusively for cruising as they battle it out for the lion’s share of the cruise ship visits. Other top-ranking ports in Asia include Jeju Island and Busan in South Korea, Taipei in Taiwan, Da Nang in Vietnam and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This virtual explosion of cruise tourism throughout Asia, driven in part by the growing financial freedom of the Chinese, has created a whole new world of possibilities for Australians looking beyond the commonplace South Pacific and Mediterranean offerings. Most port calls in Japan are by ships making ‘transit calls’ as part of an existing itinerary rather than start or finish ports, which means that the ships are coming and going regularly, moving from port to port around the many scenic locations of Japan. Of all the countries in Asia, Japan presents arguably the widest choice for shore excursions, and with good reason. As anyone who has been to Japan will tell you, it is among the safest countries in the world to travel. Public transport and civic infrastructure work with meticulous precision, the streets are immaculately clean and petty crime is almost unheard of. For the first-time visitor, any port or city in Japan is a dazzling experience. Despite their tragic 20th-century histories, both Hiroshima and Nagasaki offer culture and reflection, while Osaka is considered a culinary, shopping and entertainment capital, and it is the gateway to the UNESCO-listed city of Kyoto, mercifully spared destruction during World War II. Fukuoka is Japan’s busiest cruise port with sights such as Fukuoka Tower and scenic Ohori Park as well as the Tenmangu Shrines. Kobe, another historic international city, has a superb maritime museum right on the wharf. Apart from Japan, it seems that both local and international cruisers have their hearts set on China, South Korea, Vietnam and Malaysia in the main, while lesser ports such as Yangon, Colombo and Phuket are gaining popularity, especially with small and mid-size cruise ships. he peculiar company name of UnCruise Adventures came about when owner and founder of the small ship cruise line, Dan Blanchard, wanted to express a way to separate his particular philosophy of cruising from the vast fleet of massive liners crowding the waterways around his primary area of operation, Alaska. The purpose is, as he puts it, “to break away from the masses ... to engage, connect, and explore unique places, oneself, and with others on a most uncommon adventure.” Positioning himself and his company as something of a maverick, Blanchard has, like so many others, nevertheless followed the lead of industry veterans like Lindblad with

small ship, inspirational voyages in regions like Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, Sea of Cortés, Central America and Hawaii. With a heritage reaching back to 1996 under the name of American Safari Cruises, then InnerSea Discoveries and finally UnCruise, the small ship line has gradually expanded its fleet to eight vessels, many picked in the closure of Cruise West in 2010. INDULGENT, EXCITING & MEMOR ABLE Cruiseco’s Carolyn Mackley indulged on a 5-night cruise on Silversea’s Silver Discoverer. Why did you choose Silver Discoverer?
Silver Discoverer had just received a multimillion US-dollar refurbishment and I was lucky enough to be invited on one of the first sailings Silver Discoverer had after her rejuvenation. What were your first impressions?
“Oh, she’s lovely!” were my first words when I saw Silver Discoverer docked in a tiny, in-the-middle-of-nowhere port in Phuket. With her navy blue hull and crisp white exterior it was like we were embarking on our own private yacht! I had read to expect white-gloved service and a flute of champagne upon arrival, and from the moment we were on board she did not disappoint! What are the ship’s standout features?
Silver Discoverer is limited to 120 guests, has all ocean-view suites and plenty of deck space to wander around. It has a lovely pool deck with plenty of seating, a small gym and a day spa next door; the perfect set-up if you wish to do some exercise in the morning and follow up with a massage in the afternoon. There’s also a fleet of 12 Zodiacs which are multipurpose, from unique all-day shore excursions to popping out to a nearby coral reef for some snorkelling! Tell us about your cabin and its features.
We had a View Suite which was approximately 180 square feet in size with a large picture
window. The suite was tastefully decorated, with ample room for storage, a spacious sitting area, flat-screen TV and Bulgari bathroom amenities, as well as the mandatory safe and minibar. All guests received an expedition backpack and drink bottle to keep post cruise (nice touch!) as well as slippers and a bathrobe for use throughout the voyage. What are the dining options on board?
There was a choice of three dining options. The Grill is located by the pool and is open for breakfast and lunch serving burgers, hot dogs, salads and seafood. At night the venue changes to a ‘hot rock’ dining experience where steak and seafood are cooked tableside on a volcanic plate. Lots of fun! Definitely our favourite venue.
The Restaurant is the main dining room. It’s casual, buffet-style for breakfast and lunch, however dinner is a more sophisticated affair with a mix of local and international dishes. Room service is also available. The menu is similar to The Grill and The Restaurant. Meals are brought to your suite by your butler, who takes pride in presenting your order as if you’re sitting in a five-star restaurant. It makes for a really lovely in-suite dining experience. There is also a day lounge where self-service tea and coffee are available, and afternoon tea is served. How would you describe the service?

Who does this type of cruise appeal to?
service. There’s butler service in every suite— always someone on hand to answer questions, open a door, pull out a chair. From remembering the wine we’d enjoyed the night before to leading us to our favourite spot on the pool deck each afternoon, these were the little things that made the service on board truly memorable. What entertainment did you enjoy on board?
The Explorer Lounge plays host to all the shore excursion briefings and educational lectures, and also provides a space for light entertainment at night with a bar, piano player and singer. What was your favourite public area?
The pool deck was definitely our favourite public area on the ship. It was the perfect spot to retire to after a full day of adventure. There’s a little bar you can sit by, as well as table service. It’s great for a casual lunch and a swim, then transforms into a chic night spot to enjoy a cocktail and a yummy dinner. Tell us about your cruise itinerary and shore excursions.
We cruised for six days from Phuket, Thailand to Yangon, Myanmar. Ports of call included Port Blair, Ross Island and South Cinque Island in the Andaman Islands, India. Yangon was my favourite. The city is so vibrant; amazing gilded pagodas, street food that would excite even the most avid foodie. I loved wandering around the markets—the local artists are so talented. Shore excursions were included in each port of call, and were hosted by local guides and 32 SPRING 2017
chaperoned by Silversea Expedition Leaders, which was a very nice touch. We were off exploring every day! I really enjoyed a day of Zodiac rides, guided nature walks and snorkelling on the coral reef just offshore of the remote and uninhabited South Cinque Island. My favourite day was spent visiting Port Blair and Ross Island. Port Blair is a small island town and the capital of the Andaman Islands. The tour consisted of multiple museum tours, which may not excite all travellers but we had a great tour guide who was passionate and well-educated on the region and the history of Port Blair. The afternoon/evening tour of Ross Island was an absolute highlight. We caught the local ferry across the bay and were warmly greeted by a herd of highly inquisitive wild deer and local guides from Port Blair. We wandered through the ruins, which are overrun with vines and banyan tree roots, before taking in a spectacular light and sound show that brought the long-abandoned island back to life by taking guests through the history of the British settlement through to the end of the Second World War. I’m not a history buff but I was completely mesmerised! What was included in the cruise?
• All meals. • Beverages in-suite and throughout the ship: select wines, premium spirits, specialty coffees and soft drinks, plus your own tailored minibar which we actually didn’t make use of!
Those wanting soft adventure and enrichment. Silver Discoverer is an expedition vessel that essentially goes ‘off the beaten track’. Our cruise was perfect for nature enthusiasts and history buffs, but also ideal for those with an interest in photography and local culture. Perhaps those with mobility issues should avoid this type of cruise as, although the vessel has lifts, it can be quite a challenge for less mobile guests to climb in and out of the zodiacs. Is there anything else about the cruise that you would like to share?
I’ve cruised on a variety of cruise ships, from megaships to small yacht-like vessels, but the camaraderie you experience on an expedition cruise is truly unique. I still keep in contact with people we met on board, reminiscing on our adventures together and sharing plans for the next one. n
