WELCOME TO LUXPERIENCE
2019
I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US IN SYDNEY.
We are kicking off this year’s event alongside the commencement of the official summer daylight savings period here in Australia and the South Pacific. It’s fitting that this should coincide with Luxperience this year – more daylight in Sydney means more time to experience the city, which reinvents itself in the summer time. During the show this year we are taking advantage of the season and taking you to venues to experience the quintessential Sydney lifestyle. The Opening Thought Leaders Forum, Luxperience Awards and Welcome to Sydney Party will be held at the iconic Australian National Maritime Museum. For the Tuesday Night Social, join everyone at the historic Pier One Sydney Harbour hotel set beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We are proud to be working with new destination partners this year. Santa Monica Travel and Tourism joins the Luxperience line-up as a Unique and Inspiring Destination Partner for 2019. As the exclusive partner for the Tuesday Night Social, attendees will get a dazzling taste of Santa Monica’s chic beach style. The spirit of Luxperience is built on and endorses the evolution of premium travel experiences. Everything we do focuses on the importance of the experience factor in travel.
We believe Experience is Everything and tenaciously celebrate trailblazing luxury travellers who seek authentic, meaningful and immersive experiences.
On the show floor, you can discover some of the best local properties and experiences at the new Uniquely Australia pavilion. It’s a place for operators to share their stories and bring Australia’s own brand of hospitality to life. The Luxperience Education Program has been expanded this year and is presented in partnership with media and marketing gurus Mumbrella.
The 2019 program includes presentations by authorities on wellness travel; understanding the new breed of premium travellers in China; and the evolution of influencer marketing. Our panel of global experts will discuss how to create unique and authentic travel experiences for premium travellers. Keynote speakers at our flagship Thought Leaders event will include renowned travel trends expert Carolyn Childs, award winning author and journalist Helen Pitt, and social justice campaigner Ralph Kelly. I can’t wait to meet many of you at the show this year, to share our passion for experiential travel and together transform the future of the industry. It’s going to be an incredible year for inspiring, meaningful connections! Michelle Papas Event Director Luxperience 2019

Experience is E V E RY T H I N G WHAT IS LUXURY? AT ONE TIME, THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY – IT IS THE THING THAT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE, THE BEST QUALITY, THE MOST WELL-KNOWN.
But now, perceptions of luxury have moved beyond physical representations of wealth. There’s a shift away from conspicuous consumption of goods and towards investment in life-changing experiences. The new luxury consumer is seeking authentic, meaningful, immersive and unique high-end experiences. These experiences provide a path to discover your authentic self, to create meaningful bonds, to strengthen relationships and to gain a deeper understanding of the world. And it’s why the theme for Luxperience 2019 is Experience is Everything. “Luxury travellers are no longer satisfied with just a beautiful hotel suite, says Luxperience event director Michelle Papas. “We’ve recognised that the actual destination often isn’t the main factor when deciding where to travel. Experiences are driving luxury travel. Be it food and wine, shopping or sporting events, today’s high-end traveller is looking to immerse themselves in the destination and unique experiences that can’t be found anywhere else.” According to Euromonitor, between 2013 and 2018 experiential luxury posted an average growth rate globally that was more than twice that of personal luxury – four per cent and 1.4 percent respectively. Millennials are leading the charge with almost half saying that experiences are more important than tangibles. The latest report from industry leader Skift echoes these figures. The US Experiential Traveler Trends 2019 survey found that travellers are looking for hyper-local, unique and transformative experiences. They identified a 20 per cent increase in travellers looking for travel experiences that would change their perspective on the world. At its heart is a desire to not feel like a ‘tourist’ but instead to have a genuine, authentic experience in a destination. Luxury brands are getting onboard with the trend. In early 2019 LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods conglomerate, finalised its purchase of travel operator Belmond for US$3.2 billion. It was
a remarkable move for a company best known for running brands including Christian Dior, Bulgari and Moët & Chandon, and brings iconic travel offerings like the Hotel Cipriani and Venice Simplon-OrientExpress into the LVMH family. It’s evidence that high-end brands recognise the importance of experiences to their key customer base. Milton Pedraza, founder and CEO of the Luxury Institute believes luxury goods companies have been slow to prioritise services. “If they want to remain viable in the future, they need to start investing in experiential or service brands,” he says. And technology could be the way forward.
Photo credit: Asilia Africa In recent years, the industry has recognised that personalisation is one of the keys to creating a truly authentic experience for each traveller. Now, it’s gone a step further – thanks largely to technology. Skift has identified the emergence of co-creation and collaboration between travel company and traveller. “The control that travellers now have during every phase of their trip will begin to revolutionise the sector starting in 2019, and smart travel companies are paying attention to ways they can empower their customers without eroding the value of their brand,” says Skift’s Andrew Sheivachman. The future of the industry is experiences that bring together the world’s best luxury brands and create personalised journeys for discerning travllers. The world awaits.

As influencer activity becomes increasingly elaborate, it’s vital for brands to understand the new rules of this important approach to marketing. In this special live episode recording of The Destinationists, the podcast for the modern travel marketer, cohosts Andrés López-Varela and Lauren Quaintance will speak with a panel of luxury travel experts to come to grips with those new rules of influencer marketing.

motenashi is a way of life for every person in Japan. That means that travellers will find everyone they meet just as welcoming as the concierge at their luxury hotel. They’ll discover a country that’s the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, where ancient traditions can be discovered in style and comfort.
Japan has something for everyone: from those who want to immerse themselves in traditional customs like temple stays to visitors eager to see museums full of contemporary art. There are sprawling metropolises with world-class shopping and cuisine, but Japan’s lush countryside is just a short bullet train trip away, a place where naturelovers and adventure seekers can find everything from light hikes to white water rafting. Travellers will discover that Japan is a year-round destination. Powder hounds love the legendary winter, but it’s also a beautiful time for sightseeing and experiences like visiting the UNESCO World-Heritage listed village of Shirakawa-go. Spring sees the famed cherry blossoms sweep the country, though lesserknown flowers such as plum blossoms, hydrangea and wisteria await garden lovers as well. As the weather heats up in summer, so too does the national energy with exciting festivals taking over cities like Tokushima – intrepid travellers are even allowed to take part. Autumn brings the flush of red and golds as the trees change colour and is the perfect time for outdoor discoveries. JNTO has nine luxury suppliers co-exhibiting this year, representing five-star accommodations, a luxury cruise train, a private transfer service, a full-service DMC and a prefecture located just outside of Tokyo.

Trends in Action
We hear a lot of talk about trends in the travel industry. Where travellers want to go, how they want to get there and why they make their decisions. But it’s one thing to identify a trend and another to understand how to strategically apply it to your business.
“
Trends arise when an opportunity matches an unmet need. - Carolyn Childs 25 | LUXPERIENCE.COM.AU
It’s a topic that Carolyn Childs, CEO and co-founder of MyTravelResearch. com, has been thinking about. “Trends arise when an opportunity matches an unmet need,” says Childs. Her research has identified an eight-segment model of luxury travel needs based around customer profiles and key desires, like indulgence, empowerment, connection and growth. Travel providers can use this model to identify what potential customers are looking for and create products that appeal directly to them. Tiffany Misrahi, director of policy at the World Travel and Tourism Council, agrees. “The key to addressing customer needs is, of course, to first understand them and then develop value propositions that will meet their desires and expectations,” she said in an interview with Forbes. “Knowing your market is key.” And this is where research becomes essential. “It’s crucial for travel brands to invest in
“
Niche travel companies are now combining adventure travel with genuine humanitarian work, delivering aid to remote communities... and even assisting with life changing surgeries. truly understanding a diverse range of expectations and motivations to be able to offer the most suitable and personalised tourism product,” says Misrahi. Of the 50 trends from the past 12 months that Childs has identified, two stand out as part of a global movement towards greater sense of social responsibility. First, the research looks at how rising inequality is impacting luxury travel.
Image credit: Tourism Australia Though global wealth is growing overall, creating new travellers in search of high-end experiences, the gap between rich and poor is also expanding. Niche travel companies are now combining adventure travel with genuine humanitarian work, delivering aid to remote communities, running medical clinics, working in schools and even assisting with life changing surgeries. It’s a step beyond more basic voluntourism – which has come under criticism in recent years – and into a new world of genuine collaboration. The second trend Childs’ research has focused on is the potential for travel to contribute to female economic empowerment. When more women work, economies grow. Their economic empowerment benefits the entire community – it boosts productivity, increases economic diversification and promotes income equality. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the travel industry provides women with more opportunities for workforce participation, leadership, entrepreneurship and empowerment than many other sectors, particularly in developing countries. Across the world, the travel and tourism industry has almost twice as many female employers than other sectors, proving that significant opportunities exist in the sector for women to run their own businesses. For example, in Panama and Nicaragua, more than 70% of tourism business owners are women, compared to 20% in other sectors. Travel is a way to change lives, for everyone involved.

In Catalonia, luxury is as simple as the Mediterranean lifestyle – bright sunshine, clear skies, slow dining, good wine, fresh produce, a charming restaurant by the beach or
within an old Catalan style farmhouse. Luxury travellers can soak up this lifestyle as soon as they set foot into the city or when they venture out into the region.
This autonomous region in the northeast of Spain has a unique language and culture, a richly diverse landscape, and the buzzing city of Barcelona. As well as a taste of the Mediterranean good life, the region is home to 54 Michelinstarred restaurants, 11 unique wine making regions (officially classified as Denominations of Origin), and 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The compact size of the region means that incredible experiences are within easy reach. Travellers can go skiing in the northern peaks of Val d’Aran and bask in the sunshine by the coast in Costa Brava all in one day. Cycle through the Via Verde, a repurposed railway track, from the volcanic region of La Garrotxa in the interior to the Costa Brava, passing through the fascinating
medieval city of Girona. Sail along the Mediterranean Sea onboard a small boat captained by a sailor who will bring fresh, red Palamos prawns for lunch. Be pampered with indulgent treatments at Europe’s second oldest wine spa, Peralada Golf & Wine Spa Hotel, then meet with a certified botanist who pairs plants, herbs and flowers in the region with various different wines.

IT’S COOL TO BE KIND Kindness is a powerful statement. In the face of the world’s problems, kindness is a conscious choice to improve the lives of others while asking nothing in return. Sometime around late 2016, a new buzzword started popping up everywhere – mindfulness. Suddenly, we were being told that this concept of awareness and engagement was the solution for stress, anxiety, workplace frustrations, even weight loss. Mindfulness quickly became a $1.2 billion industry and the top app trend of 2018. After generating this renewed focus on internal understanding and selfcompassion, the movement is beginning to turn outwards. As we head into a new decade, kindness is king. It’s certainly not a new idea. Roman philosopher and emperor Marcus Aurelius once said “kindness is man’s greatest delight”. But, as The Guardian wrote last year, kindness has often been viewed with suspicion, as if it implies some sort of weakness or naiveté that can be exploited. In reality, it’s the opposite. Kindness is a powerful statement. In the face of the world’s problems, kindness is a conscious choice to improve the lives of others while asking nothing in return.
Kindness has so many benefits... When we are kind to someone, it doesn’t just help that person, it is scientifically proven to improve our own physical and mental health as well. - Jamie Thurston, Founder of 52 Lives “Kindness has so many benefits,” says Jaime Thurston, author and founder of kindness-based charity 52 Lives. “When we are kind to someone, it doesn’t just help that person, it is scientifically proven to improve our own physical and mental health as well. So at a time when rates of depression and anxiety seem to be skyrocketing, kindness could be a very 29 | LUXPERIENCE.COM.AU
simple but powerful antidote.” It’s a philosophy that is being adopted by business that are moving beyond corporate social responsibility toward an active program of corporate kindness. It encourages employees to be generous, be empathetic and to take a leap of faith when dealing with customers and with their fellow employees. It’s a remarkably simple strategy that can genuinely change lives. Ralph and Kathy Kelly have harnessed the power of kindness as a way of coping with personal tragedy. In 2012, their 18 year old son Thomas was killed in a horrifying coward punch attack in Kings Cross. His parents were determined to ensure that his death was not in vain and established the Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation and the Take Kare program aimed at minimising violence in the city centre. In 2016, in a second unimaginable tragedy, Thomas’ younger brother Stuart took his own life. This time, the Kellys turned towards a broader goal – kindness. The Stay Kind foundation encourages people to complete one act of kindness a day. It created the #kindJuly movement that aims to promote respect within the community. It’s easy to think that kindness doesn’t mean much, but the Kellys see the potential. “You’ve got 24 or 25 million people in this country,” Kathy said to 9Honey earlier this year. “If everybody did one act of kindness a day, it would be nine billion acts of kindness. Wouldn’t that be amazing?” Ralph Kelly will be a keynote speaker at the Luxperience 2019 Thought Leaders Forum.

Why now is the time for wellness WELLNESS TRAVEL IS A $639 BILLION INDUSTRY. BY 2022, THAT FIGURE IS PREDICTED TO REACH MORE THAN $919 BILLION. IT’S ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TRENDS IN TRAVEL RIGHT NOW, A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY THAT REACHES EVERY CORNER OF THE GLOBE. The Global Wellness Institute (GWI), a non-profit industry body, believes that the boom in wellness tourism is the result of the powerful intersection of two large and growing industries: the $2.6 trillion tourism industry and the $4.2 trillion wellness industry. That means that wellness travel is also high-yield travel. On average, international wellness tourists spent 58 per cent more than typical international tourists. For domestic travel, that figure rises to 178 per cent. Australian travellers spend more per trip on wellness travel than any other nation in the Asia Pacific region – $2,992 for international trips and $866 for domestic trips. “In Australia, wellness travel is worth $14 billion in visitor spend,” says Katherine Droga, Founder of the Wellness Tourism Summit, Droga & co. and Chair of the Global Wellness Institutes Wellness Tourism Initiative. “It’s a huge opportunity for Australia as wellness travellers are not only high yielding but importantly, they tread lightly and are a far more sustainable tourism market.”
So why the boom? In a world that moves at an everfaster pace, people are looking to holidays that give them the opportunity to recharge and reset. Things that were once niche – like mindfulness, yoga and holistic therapies – have now gone mainstream and are a feature of our daily lives. It is not a surprise that people now expect to continue their healthy lifestyles and wellness routines when they are away from home. At the same time, many people are moving away from a medical mindset that looks to doctors and drug companies to ‘fix’ their problems, and instead are seeking holistic experiences that can improve the health of their body, mind and spirit. “For me it’s about your mindset that you bring to the trip and being open to personal transformation in some way,” says Droga. As travellers now focus on seeking out authentic experiences, wellness provides another avenue for interacting with a culture. There’s no longer a ‘one size fits all’ model where the same treatments will be rolled out across spas anywhere in the world. Travellers now have the opportunity to experience a

traditional wooden sauna in Finland, learn tai chi in China or enjoy a massage using native indigenous ingredients in Tropical North Queensland. Wellness also could be leveraged to address some of the negatives that are arising within travel, such as overtourism. Dr Jean-Claude Baumgarten, the former president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council, believes that wellness tourism could indeed “be a solution to overtourism, by diversifying an established destination’s tourism product” and opening up new areas that travellers might not have previously considered. In Japan, 48 per cent of visitors are concentrated in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. In an effort to draw tourists to new areas, the Japan National Tourism Organization is focusing on wellness tourism in areas like Beppu, known for its hot springs. The new Dragon Route is a tourist trail that runs through central Japan and includes many hot spring and spa retreats. High-end hotels are following suit, with InterContinental, Hyatt and Marriott opening resorts in these destinations. National tourism bodies are recognising that a focus on wellness is a smart strategy for limiting the effects of overtourism and distributing the economic benefits
Photo credit: AYANA Hotel across the entire country. (Read more about how the travel industry is addressing overtourism on page 42.) From yoga rooms and therapy dogs at airports to unique wellness offerings in unusual destinations, the industry is embracing a holistic understanding of health. Wellness tourism is about much more than where people visit and what they do while on a trip. It is an extension of the values and lifestyle of the traveller. And that makes the potential for wellness travel essentially unlimited.
Katherine Droga will be speaking at Luxperience 2019. The inaugural Wellness Tourism Summit takes place March 19-20, 2020, at the Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort. LUXGUIDE ‘19 | 34

Rwanda is a conservation and wildlife success story, and options for wildlife encounters and national park visits are plentiful. It is one of only three countries in the world where the endangered mountain gorilla lives. Protected within the Volcanoes National Park, home to the Virunga Mountains, these majestic animals have settled into the park’s lush bamboo forests, which provide a dramatic setting in which to experience one of the most memorable wildlife experiences this planet has to offer. Nyungwe National Park is home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and more than 700 different bird species. Since lions and eastern black rhinos were reintroduced to Rwanda in 2015 and 2017 respectively, Akagera National Park once again has Africa’s ‘Big Five.’ Rwanda also has a unique culture and powerful heritage that makes it a desirable destination for any type of traveller. A number of luxury eco-lodges are opening across the country. Singita’s Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House, right on the foothills of the Volcanoes National Park, support the provision of transformative experiences with the magnificent mountain gorilla. Wilderness Safaris, with their Magashi Camp in Akagera National Park in partnership with the Akagera Management Company, are providing unique safari experiences. The tourism strategy has concentrated on ensuring sustainability through responsible tourism, conservation and community involvement. It is also focused on protecting natural heritage and providing a world-class experience that highlights the specialness of Rwanda, while ensuring that Rwandans benefit directly from tourism and conservation. THE HOUSE THAT SHAPED AUSTRALIA
LEGENDARY ARCHITECT FRANK GEHRY CALLED IT “A BUILDING THAT CHANGED THE IMAGE OF AN ENTIRE COUNTRY”. PERCHED ON A PENINSULA JUTTING OUT INTO SYDNEY HARBOUR, IT’S AUSTRALIA’S MOST RECOGNISABLE ICON. IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO IMAGINE THE CITY WITHOUT IT. But, as veteran journalist Helen Pitt discovered, the story of the Sydney Opera House is surprisingly controversial. Pitt is the author of The House: The dramatic story of the Sydney Opera House and the people who made it, winner of the 2018 Walkley Book Award. She was just a child when the building opened in 1973, but it’s a subject that has fascinated her for more than 40 years. Members of Sydney’s arts community had been campaigning for a suitably grand cultural institution since the 1940s. On February 15, 1956, NSW Premier Joseph Cahill officially launched the international competition to build a National Opera House at Bennelong Point, Sydney. There was £5,000 prize money on offer, a panel of four esteemed judges and 233 entrants from around the world. The judges chose a relatively unknown 38 year old Danish architect, Jorn Utzon. At this point in his career, he had designed little more than his own home, but his bold vision would change the face of modern Sydney. The estimated cost of $7 million was raised by public lottery, construction began in 1959 and the new Sydney Opera House was to be open by Australia Day 1963. But it was not to be. The cost would blow out to $102 million and the building would finally open more than a decade behind schedule. After dramatic confrontations with the government, Utzon left the project in 1966 and would never return to Australia to see his dream brought to life. As a final insult, he was shunned in his native Denmark for ‘walking away’ from the project.
Image credit: Fairfax Archive. These and more exclusive images from the Fairfax Archive vault can be found in Helen Pitt’s book The House and will also feature in Helen’s keynote presentation during the Luxperience 2019 Thought Leaders Forum on Monday 7 October.
On October 20, 1973, Queen Elizabeth II presided over the official opening. “The Sydney Opera House has captured the imagination of the world, though I understand that its construction has not been totally without problems,” she said. “The human spirit must sometimes take wings or sails, and create something that is not just utilitarian or commonplace.” For the 40th anniversary in 2013, Utzon was once again brought to the forefront. His daughter Lin, a successful artist and designer in her own right, returned to Sydney for the celebrations. “The Sydney Opera House signalled and caused a transformation in the consciousness of Australians, giving them a strong sense of place and pride and a celebration of their beautiful and wildly poetic country,” she said at the time. “One of the most remarkable and brilliant buildings of the 20th century came into being in Sydney, changing a whole nation’s outlook and perception of itself.” Helen Pitt will be a keynote speaker at the Luxperience 2019 Thought Leaders Forum.

OVER TOURISM CAN WE HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING?
EACH YEAR MORE THAN 1.3 BILLION PEOPLE TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY. IN 1995, THAT NUMBER WAS 500 MILLION. AS WEALTH GROWS GLOBALLY, MORE PEOPLE WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO TRAVEL. IN THEORY, THESE NEW TOURISTS WOULD VISIT NEW PLACES AND SPREAD THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF TOURISM ACROSS THE WORLD. BUT THE REALITY IS QUITE DIFFERENT – BECAUSE THEY ALL WANT TO GO TO THE SAME PLACE. 41 | LUXPERIENCE.COM.AU
According to Euromonitor International, 46 per cent of all travellers go to just 100 destinations. It’s an understandable urge. People want to see the icons – the canals of Venice, the Mona Lisa, Machu Picchu – and inexperienced travellers are more likely to follow well-trodden routes. By 2020, Euromonitor predicts that the top 20 most-visited countries in the world will receive an additional 121 million visitors a year. That’s more than the rest of the world combined. Overtourism has become one of the defining issues of the travel industry. It has potential implications for climate change, cultural preservation, overtaxed infrastructure, local economies and more. It’s an issue that expert Chris Flynn is acutely aware of and it lead to him founding the new World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage (WTACH). “With the continued explosion in global tourism arrivals, for that’s what it is, we see disturbing trends that need to be recognised, understood and acted upon,” Flynn says.
SO, WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS? Regulation and industry collaboration are essential. “WTACH has been established to work with public and private sector organisations to develop clear Cultural Heritage Tourism goals and principals that will serve to protect the unique cultures of the world by means of fostering and promoting practical guidelines that serve to guard against exploitation and unethical practices,” says Flynn. WTACH has established Codes of Conduct and Ethical Practices that outline practical ways members can operate to ensure their cultural heritage assets are protected and maintained for generations to come. Promoting secondary tourist destinations and developing new experiences could take some of the pressure off the ‘hotspots’. Some destinations are introducing a tourist tax. Rather than a measure designed to discourage visitation, the tax will create revenue that allows cities to develop resources and manage tourist numbers effectively. Luxury may be an answer as countries like Rwanda and Bhutan focus on highyield tourists through the construction of high-end properties or the implementation of a minimum daily spend. And to see how wellness is working to combat overtourism, turn to page 36.
Promoting secondary tourist destinations and developing new experiences could take some of the pressure off the ‘hotspots’.
Australia is not immune to overtourism, though Flynn believes we are in a better position than most thanks to our focus on yield over numbers. He cites Uluru as one of the best examples of successfully mitigating the impact of tourists whilst still preserving the industry. By minimising capacity, offering a broad range of accommodation options, developing soft adventure experiences that don’t impact the environment and charging an entry fee “they maintain control of their assets but in a manner that ensures visitors always get what’s on the postcard”. Flynn is firm in his belief that the responsibility for the impact of overtourism lies with the industry, not the traveller. “Travellers need to plan, but this issue is not because of the traveller. Travellers buy what we sell. They consume what we package. And they visit where and what we recommend,” he says. “It’s we that have to change not the traveller. As an industry we can no longer turn a blind eye to the destructive path we’re on and the impact we are having on these fragile communities.” Photo credit: Tourism Australia

Growth is good but yield is gold TOURISM CONTRIBUTES $57.3 BILLION TO THE AUSTRALIAN ECONOMY EACH YEAR, WHICH IS JUST OVER THREE PER CENT OF THE NATIONAL TOTAL. That number has been steadily on the rise for the past decade as more eager visitors arrive on our shores. But the latest figures from Tourism Australia show that quality is now more important than quantity. Australia ranks in 40th place in the world for overall visitor numbers, with 9.2 million international travellers arriving each year. However, when looking at overall spend Australia sits in the top 10 at seventh place – international tourists spend a combined $43.9 billion. And for spend per visitor, Australia jumps all the way up to number one. In 2019, the average traveller to Australia spent $5,200 per person, with airfares, accommodation, and food and drink making up most of the spend. To meet demand, many Australian cities are in the middle of a luxury

hotel boom. The six-star Ritz-Carlton brand has returned after a 15-year absence with a swathe of new hotels. Ritz-Carlton Perth is set to open in November this year, RitzCarlton Melbourne will open in 2020, construction has begun on RitzCarlton Brisbane and two properties are planned for Sydney. Newcastle is set to get its first luxury hotels with the QT Newcastle, Little National Hotel and Kingsley from the Crystalbrook Collection opening by 2020. Sofitel, Hyatt Regency and Westin. There are also environmental benefits to high-yield tourism. “Pivoting towards yield reduces tourism’s environmental footprint and lifts public acceptance,” says David Smith, manager at Tourism Research Australia. “A fully crewed maxi-yacht hosting a handful of well-heeled passengers will benefit small communities far more than coachloads of day trippers seeking a souvenir and toilet stop.” Regional Australia is reaping many of the rewards of high-yield

tourism. Out of every tourist dollar in the country, 43 cents of it is spent in regional areas. They are drawn by exceptional food and wine, stunning natural landscapes, and world-class luxury lodges or unique boutique properties. As the definition of luxury evolves and travellers seek out authentic experiences, Australia is once again at the forefront. Our unique regions lead the world for their boutique properties, cultural immersion, hands-on experiences and opportunities to engage with the locals.
Many regional destinations have begun to invest seriously in highend tourism, hoping to replicate what’s known in the industry as ‘the MONA effect’. Developing one exceptional product can revolutionise the industry for a whole town or state. The groundbreaking MONA museum in Hobart was a game changer – Tasmania’s tourism numbers climbed to over one million and thousands of hotel rooms were added to the city. Other states are following suit, offering loans or partnerships and encouraging private investment.
James Baillie, founder of Baillie Lodges and one of the country’s leading experts on luxury, believes the top end of the industry is strong and will continue to grow. “Australia is now well-established as a luxury destination, and with its proven sustainability the sector becomes more attractive for investors,” he says. “The sector has proved itself to be robust to economic fluctuations and I think its future is bright!”
