This was a tragic expedition as the crew were forced to eat some 14,000 penguins which they were forced to kill for food. Stored as properly as possible, once they reached the tropics the penguin meat spoiled and subsequently only 16 members of the original crew of 76 ever reached home shores. 1773: In January, Captain James Cook and his crew become the first men to cross the Antarctic Circle and in January 1775, on his third voyage, sails past South Georgia and discovers the South Sandwich Islands two weeks later. 1810: In July, Australian Frederick Hasselborough discovers Macquarie Island while searching for new sealing grounds. 1823: In February, Englishman James Weddell sails to 74 degrees south. This is the farthest south yet reached and the penetrated sea bears his name today. Except for possibly Morrell, no one is able to penetrate this sea again for eighty years. 1831: In February, Englishman John Biscoe, an employee of the British sealing business “Enderby Brothers”, discovers Enderby Land, the first sighting of Antarctica from the Indian Ocean zone. 1841: In January, under Sir James Clark Ross in EREBUS and TERROR, search for the South Magnetic Pole has been ordered by the British Royal Navy. He discovers Victoria Land and enters the sea which is known famously now as the Ross Sea. He discovers Ross Island, Mt. Erebus and the Ross Ice Shelf. 1899: In February, Carsten Borchgrevink and crew of the SOUTHERN CROSS land at Cape Adare. They build huts and become the first to winter over on the continent. 1902: In February, a Swedish geologist, Otto Nordenskjöld, and five crew members are left on Snow Hill Island where they spend two winters. It was during this expedition that the first major sledge journey in Antarctica took place; some 400 miles. Unfortunately, their ship Antarctic was crushed in the ice pack after leaving the crew on the island thereby creating two separate groups of explorers. Miraculously, the second crew was able to survive the winter and find their way back to Snow Hill Island where the whole party was rescued in 1903 by an Argentinean relief ship. 1908: In October, explorers Ernest Shackle-

Only some historical ed here. ton, Frank Wild, Eric Marshall and Jameson Adams attempt to reach the South Pole. Within 30 days they have surpassed Scotts effort in 1903. Reaching within 97 nautical miles, the group is severely ill and undernourished requiring them to abandon their attempt on the pole. 1911: On December 14, Norwegian Roald Amundsen and four team members reach the South Pole. Amundsen discovered a new route which took only 57 days. Letters are left for Scott, a Norwegian flag planted and then they return to the Bay of Whales. 1912: On January 18, Robert F. Scott, Edward Wilson, Edgar Evans and Lawrence Oates reach the South Pole. Unfortunately, Amundsen had already been there and left a flag marking the spot. Terribly discouraged after a tortuous journey, all members perish on the return trip. Scott, Wilson and Bowers die in their tent after using up all fuel and food. The three are not discovered until November. 1915: In October, Ernest Shackleton has a plan to cross the continent but is forced to abandon this idea as his ship, the ENDURANCE, is crushed in the ice of the Weddell Sea after drifting for nine months. The 28 men must camp on the floating ice for five more months before an opening in the ice allows them to take to the boats for Elephant Island in the South Shetlands. Meanwhile, members of Shackleton’s Ross shore party lay depots for the ill-fated group, depots expected to be used by Shackleton and his party on their trek across the continent. Three members die but the rest were eventually rescued in 1917. 1957: In July, the International Geophysical Year begins with Antarctica the main effort of scientists from 67 countries over the next 18 months. Twelve new bases are constructed with the Amundsen-Scott base at the South Pole (American) constructed for the OPERATION DEEPFREEZE expeditions. 1959: In December, the twelve leading nations participating in the IGY sign the “Antarctic Treaty” in Washington, DC. The treaty was framed as an agreement so the continent “shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes”. The treaty came into effect in 1961 and guarantees access and scientific research in all territory south of 60° latitude. 1998: The Madrid Protocol was adopted in response to proposals that the wide range of provisions relating to protection of the Antarctic environment should be harmonised in a comprehensive and legally binding form.

Antarctica & Surrounding Area Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost part of the mainland of Antarctica, located at the base of the Southern Hemisphere. At the surface, it is the biggest, most prominent peninsula in Antarctica as it extends 1300 km from a line between Cape Adams (Weddell Sea) and a point on the mainland south of Eklund Islands. Beneath the ice sheet which covers it, the Antarctic Peninsula consists of a string of bedrock islands; these are separated by deep channels whose bottoms lie at depths considerably below current sea level. They are joined together by a grounded ice sheet. Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America, lies only about 1000 km away across the Drake Passage. The Antarctic Peninsula is currently dotted with numerous research stations and nations have made multiple claims of sovereignty. The peninsula is part of disputed and overlapping claims by Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom. None of these claims has international recognition and the respective countries do not attempt to enforce their claims. Argentina has the most bases and personnel stationed on the peninsula.

South Georgia

The Island of South Georgia is said to have been first sighted in 1675 by Anthony de la Roché, a London merchant, and was named Roche Island on a number of early maps. It was sighted by a commercial Spanish ship named León operating out of Saint-Malo on 28 June or 29 June 1756. Captain James Cook circumnavigated the island in 1775 and made the first landing. He claimed the territory for the Kingdom of Great Britain, and named it “the Isle of Georgia” in honour of King George III. British arrangements for the government of South Georgia were first established under the 1843 British Letters Patent. Throughout the 19th century, South Georgia was a sealers’ base as well as a whalers’ base beginning in the 20th century, until whaling ended in the 1960s. A Norwegian, Carl Anton Larsen, established the first landbased whaling station and first permanent habitation at Grytviken in 1904. It operated through his Argentine Fishing Company, which settled in Grytviken.[4][5] The station remained in operation until 1965.

Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 miles (480 km) east of South America’s southern Patagonian coast, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 12,000 km2, comprises East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, and the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The islands’ capital is Stanley on East Falkland. The islands lie on the boundary of the subantarctic oceanic and tundra climate zones, and both major islands have mountain ranges reaching 700 mts. They are home to large bird populations, although many no longer breed on the main islands because of competition from introduced species. Major economic activities include fishing, tourism and sheep farming, with an emphasis on high-quality wool exports.

South Orkney Is.

The South Orkney Islands are a group of islands in the Southern Ocean, about 604 kilometres north-east of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.[1] They have a total area of about 620 square kilometres. The islands are claimed both by Britain (as part of the British Antarctic Territory since 1962, previously as a Falkland Islands Dependency), and by Argentina as part of Argentine Antarctica. Under the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, sovereignty claims are held in abeyance. Britain and Argentina both maintain bases on the islands. The Argentinian base, Orcadas, established 1904, is sited on Laurie Island. The 11 buildings of the Argentinian station house up to 45 people during the summer, and an average of 14 during winter. The British Antarctic Survey base, Signy Research Station, is located on Signy Island and was established in 1947. Apart from personnel at the bases, there are no inhabitants on the islands.

Weddell Sea

The Weddell Sea is part of the Southern Ocean and contains the Weddell Gyre. Its land boundaries are defined by the bay formed from the coasts of Coats Land and the Antarctic Peninsula. The easternmost point is Cape Norvegia at Princess Martha Coast, Queen Maud Land. To the east of Cape Norvegia is the King Haakon VII Sea. Much of the southern part of the sea is covered by a permanent, massive ice shelf field, the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (not pack ice). The sea is contained within the two overlapping Antarctic territorial claims of Argentina, (Argentine Antarctica) and Britain (British Antarctic Territory) At its widest the sea is around 2,000 km across, in area it is around 2.8 million km². The Weddell Sea has been deemed by scientists to have the clearest water of any sea. Dutch researchers from the German Alfred Wegener Institute, on finding a Secchi disc visible at a depth of 262 feet (79.86 metres) on October 13, 1986, ascertained that the clarity corresponded to that of distilled water.

East Antarctica

East Antarctica is one of the most isolated places on the planet. Here, the massive polar ice cap rolls down to a sea rich in wildlife. It is also where explorers both heroic and modern day have landed and lived in the face of nature. Mawson, David, and Mackay were the first to reach the South Magnetic Pole (in January 15th, 1909) after trekking some 1,000 miles. Celebrate the achievement with a visit to the remains of Mawson’s Hut in Commonwealth Bay and several islands that were also visited during Mawson’s expedition. This voyage is an opportunity to experience a seldom-visited part of Antarctica, rich in history and wildlife. Named “Home of the Blizzard” by Sir Douglas Mawson during the 191113 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, this rarely visited part of Antarctica was in fact the location of the very popular film “March of the Penguins”. The remains of Mawson’s Hut at Commonwealth Bay is a piece of Antarctic history few people have ever seen. The French Base nearby welcomes visitors. Because ice “breaks out” early in the season it is a great place for wildlife.

When to go to Antarctica

December - January • Long days of summer light, milder temperatures. • Penguin chicks hatch in the Falklands and South Georgia, then the Antarctic Peninsula. • Seal pups born on South Georgia and the Falklands. Whale sightings increase.

What the weather is like The Antarctic Peninsula and islands have a typical maritime climate. The cold winters are followed by warmer summers, with temperatures lower in the higher altitudes on the eastern side. Average temperatures during the cruising season vary between +1°C and -15°C. It’s technically a desert; precipitation averages only 166mm (6½ins) per year. Depressions can bring in cloud and snow or rain, but when the sun shines, it is magic. The ice is tinted from an extraordinary palette of pink, crimson, tangerine and violet – a kaleidoscope of colour. Weather conditions can be unpredictable: periods of calm, frozen intensity give way to a sudden storm or blizzard. White-outs are not infrequent, and winds can career down from the polar plateau to the coast at velocities of up to 300km an hour – treacherous conditions for the unprepared and it can be bitterly cold.

January and February. • At this time, wildlife is at its most prolific. • Travel before this, however, in November or early December, and you will encounter a spring-awakened environment of virgin snow unpolluted by the footsteps of other visitors • Wait until March, and the pack-ice is relenting, giving access to areas further south and there are fewer travellers as the season draws to a close. • The sublime landscape of rock and ice is of course timeless, but subtle differences characterise each month.

The Antarctic is accessible by ship from late October to March, the southern hemisphere summer. Outside this period, days are short and dark. During the summer, however, the land radiates in long lingering hours of daylight. The most popular months for cruising are

February - March • Excellent whale-watching opportunities. • Penguin chicks begin to fledge. • Fur seals increasingly numerous on the Antarctic Peninsula. • Colourful snow algae breaks the snow-white domination of the landscape. • Spectacular sunrises and sunsets add a rosy glow to the ice. • The pack ice is breaking up and may allow for deeper penetration of the Weddell Sea.

What is the nature of an Antarctic cruise?

Antarctica is very remote: once committed to your journey, you are humbled by the domination of the weather and ocean conditions, the melting and freezing of ice-packs, and the movement of icebergs.

A cruise here is not like a jaunt around the Caribbean or Mediterranean. This is expeditionary cruising: you will be facing the same environmental challenges as the early explorers, albeit in much greater comfort, and with the assistance of modern technology and communications. Itineraries will vary from the original plan if conditions demand/permit. You may not be able to visit a spot you had been particularly keen to see; on the other hand, new unforeseen opportunities may well open up.

Who takes a cruise in Antarctica?

A mix of ages and nationalities, they are made up of couples, groups of friends, organised groups and single people. (Singles can request a samesex share to keep the costs down.) Children are accepted but we do not recommend a cruise for anyone under 12 years of age. Most visitors will share a love of adventure, the natural environment and wildlife, and it is easy to make new friends.

Do I have to be fit?

You need to be sufficiently agile to get in and out of small landing craft and walk over rocky terrain. There is a doctor on board, but Antarctica is a very remote destination and if you fall ill or have an accident you cannot just be helicoptered out to safety, so bear this in mind if you have a pre-existing condition. Your holiday is not cheap –make sure your insurance covers you for the full amount if you have to cancel.

What clothes should I take?

Protective clothing is the single most important way of ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable cruise. Modern fabrics are available which are neither heavy nor voluminous. We recommend a breathable, thermal base layer to wick away perspiration; a warm mid-layer such as a fleece

A Typical Day On An Expedition Cruise

What’s the routine of a typical day on cruise? You’ll wake early – partly because dawn breaks in the middle of the night, but also out of excitement: the promise of what a new day in Antarctica will bring. Some linger at breakfast and chat whilst contemplating the frozen world beyond their table. Others have already been out on deck and are itching to get back outside. One or two, disorientated by the neverending daylight in Antarctica, have forgotten to go to bed ’til 5am and make it to breakfast in the nick of time. The call to Zodiacs sounds at 9-ish. Cocooned in layers, you’ll be glad you wrapped up as you exit the ship. On a stormy day the biting sleet-laden winds of Antarctica will sandblast any remaining bits of exposed flesh. On a glistening, sunlit morning you’ll soon be peeling off those layers while the Antarctic sun warms your body as you crunch through the snow. Although not the norm, clear days in Antarctica, with their palette of whites and blues, are truly magical. But the never-ending spectacle of Antarctica’s wildlife unfolds before you whatever the weather. Although the expedition team will always supervise all landings, there are opportunities to absorb it all on your own. Antarctic travel can make you hungry. Lunch is back on board, icebergs gliding slowly past your table as the ship heads for new territory. The call of a whale sighting can send everyone rushing outdoors. An occasional roll of the boat tests the agility of the crew as they head towards tables with the next course. There’s never a dull moment. or down sweater; light, lined trousers; and a wind and shower proof (but breathable) outer shell garment. A hat, scarf, warm socks, gloves and rubber boots (for wet landings: these can be pre-ordered and supplied on board) are essential.

Who are the expedition team and crew?

An Antarctic cruise is an informal, friendly affair. It’s assumed that all visitors will have a love of natural wilderness and wildlife, and everything will be done to ensure that your enjoyment of these will be maximised. The staff and crew are highly trained, welcoming and very experienced: Captains have spent years navigating in polar regions. An experienced and enthusiastic English-speaking expedition team from Europe or the Americas is employed to organise the daily programme and accompany the shore excursions. You will be informed by lecturers who specialise in the natural and human history of the region – many of them well known naturalists or former members of research stations.

Wrap up again for the afternoon landing – perhaps 3pm. It could be a Zodiac cruise amid penguin-studded ice floes, or a call upon scientists in an isolated research station. And everything depends on the weather. The warmth of life on board can be as inviting as the adventure itself. You really appreciate that steaming mug of cocoa and hot shower when you get back on ship. There’s time to really unwind – enjoy an informal lecture, relax with a book - before dinner. Polar evenings are stunning if conditions are still. Go out on deck and enjoy crimson-tinged icescapes. The only difficult decision is when to call it a day. Not easy when it never gets dark.

These shore explorations are lead by expert naturalist guides and staff. During these hikes you will have the chance to absorb the enviroment and marvel at some of the amazing wildlife and wilderness of this remote continent.

Dive expeditions are for experienced dry suit divers. Led by an experienced dive guide, this is a fascinating journey to explore the hidden treasures beneath the waters of Antarctica. Must be booked in advance. Optional activity

A wonderful way to experience the ambience of Antarctica is to spend a night ashore. This option is available on all our adventure voyages. We provide the tents, snow grade sleeping bags and inflatable sleeping mats. There is no additional cost for this activity. Optional.

Cross-country skiing is one of the best ways to sample the vast open areas of Antarctica. Using our ship as a base, we take advantage of the long hours of daylight, without being too strenuous, or committing. Limited cross-country skiing experience is recommended. Optional.

The rugged and spectacular spine of the Antarctic Peninsula is home to numerous mountains. Many of these summits are readily accessible as a one day expedition. Prior experience is not necessary but you must be in good physical condition. Optional activity.

An Emperor Penguin rookery is situated south of Snow Hill Island. If we succeed, this will be a fascinating and a once-in-a lifetime experience. During this voyage we will reserve three days to visit the Emperor Rookeries by helicopters. If we succeed the first two days, we may decide to offer an alternative landing in the Weddell Sea on the third day, such as Paulet Island where we can visit a fantastic Adelie penguin colony with approximately 1 million breeding pairs. Join us for an new exploratory voyage to Campbell Island, home to the Southern Royal Albatross, to the huts of Shackleton and Scott on Ross Island, to the Bay of Whales and Kainan Bay, the starting points from where Norwegian Amundsen and the Japanese Shirase gained access to the iceshelf in 1911 and 1912, and where Byrd wintered in Little America. MV Plancius

MV PLANCIUS /v “Plancius” was built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and was M named “Hr. Ms. Tydeman”. The ship sailed for the Dutch Navy until June 2004 and was eventually purchased by Oceanwide Expeditions. The vessel was completely rebuilt as a 116-passenger vessel in 2009 and complies with the latest SOLAS-regulations (Safety Of Life At Sea). MV ORTELIUS Ortelius” was built in Gdynia, Poland in 1989, was named “Marina Svetaeva”, and served as a special pur“ pose vessel for the Russian Academy of Science. The vessel is re-flagged and renamed “Ortelius”. “Ortelius” is classed by Lloyd’s Register in London and flies the Cyprus flag.As Plancius, Ortelius was a Dutch / Flemish cartographer. Abraham Ortelius (1527 – 1598) published the first modern world atlas, theTheatrum Orbis Terrarum or Theatre of the World in 1570. At that time, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. “Ortelius” is a great expedition vessel for 116 passengers with lots of open-deck spaces. Booking Conditions and Responsibility Please ensure you understand the following conditions before you book your holiday. Reservations are accepted on the basis that you abide by the following conditions. All tours in this brochure and others that we may create are operated by Travel Projects Pty Ltd. Suite 805, 365 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000. Travel Projects refers only to the tour operating company specified on this page, as does “we”, “us” and “ours”. Bookings are taken on the basis that you accept these conditions. Payment Terms Deposits A non-refundable deposit of $300 per person for land services is required in order to confirm and secure your reservation. Failure to pay the deposit on time may result in your booking to be cancelled. Should you need to re-instate any expired reservation due to a non payment of the deposit, we will charge a $55 amendment fee in addition to immediate payment of standard deposit. Additional Deposits Multi-Country Tours: 25% per person, payable within 5 days of confirmation (Non -refundable) Rio de Janeiro/Salvador Carnival/New Year’s Eve: Immediate, NON REFUNDABLE full payment is required on confirmation. Inca Trail: $600 per person non-refundable for us to request. Galapagos Cruises: 25% per person non-refundable within 5 days of confirmation. Jungle Lodges: 50% per person non-refundable within 5 days of confirmation. Skorpios Cruises: 25% per person non-refundable within 5 days of confirmation. Amazon Cruises: 30% with conditions. Per person is required within 5 days of confirmation. Australis Cruises: 30% non-refundable deposit within 5 days of confirmation. Atacama & Patagonia Lodges: 30% - 50% non-refundable deposit within 5 days of confirmation. Some services require immediate $300 deposit in order to confirm Final Payment Full payment is required 60 days prior to departure from Australia, please note, some services require stricter final payment due dates that will be advised to you on the invoice. If reservation is made within 30 days prior to departure, full payment is required at time of booking. Cancellation Fees All cancellations must be received in writing. Following fees or percentages will be charged based on the date of receipt in writing, by fax or by email by Travel Projects of notification of cancellation. Cancellations will take effect the day said written notification is received by us. The following fees apply per person, plus any other cancellation

fees and conditions imposed by other service operators such as Antarctica, Patagonia and Galapagos cruises: a. More than 60 days notice - Loss of deposits. b. 30 to 60 days - 50 % c. Less than 30 day - No refund. Above-mentioned cancellation fees will be strictly adhered to and for this reason we strongly recommend you to take out a travel insurance at the time of reservation. Please advise if you want us to send you an application form for insurance. There is no refund of pre-paid packages on special events Amendments Should you wish to amend your reservation, an amendment fee of $75 will be charged per amendment. Prices Prices shown in this manual have been calculated on tariffs applicable as of 01 March 2016, and are subject to change without notice. If between the date you make your booking and the date of outbound travel from Australia, these air fares and services change; you may be required to pay additional charges. Acceptance of this arrangement is a condition of booking. Late Booking Fee Bookings made within 15 days of commencement of travel will incur a late booking administration fee of $ 55 plus courier costs if necessary. Travel Insurance We strongly recommend Travel Insurance, particularly when touring in Latin America as medical costs and repatriation are very high in that area. Refunds Please note that there will be no refund of unused ground content for any reason. If you make any alteration to any portion of the holiday. Such alteration will be entirely at your own expense. Not included in tour cost Visae, insurance, excess baggage, meals not mentioned, vaccinations, airport departure taxes, beverages, tips, shipboard gratuities, items of personal nature like: Laundry, telephone calls etc., cost of passport, personal services to hotel rooms.
