THE ICELAND CIRCLE TOUR 9 DAYS

The Iceland Circle Tour In Nine Days Day One: Arrival in Iceland

A private coach bus will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel for dinner and lodging. An experienced guide will give information about Iceland as you go.

Day Two: Reykjavik – Golden Circle - Reykholt

The beginning of this exciting tour is in the Hveragerði village, which means the garden of hot springs, and the extensive greenhouses which form the area’s main industry. They grow both vegetables and flowers in the naturally geothermally heated nurseries. We then travel on to Geysir area to see those famous hot springs and geysers, such as Strokker, which spouts more than 70 feet in the area every few minutes. Just a few minutes away is the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. The water comes from the Langjökull glacier and meanders through the landscape for 30km until it plunges over a 32 meter cliff and down in the Hvítá, or white, river below. We journey on through the farmland of the south, past Laugarvatn village to the Thingvellir National Park. The road can only be used during the summer months. A short walking tour brings us back in history to 930 AD when the first Icelandic parliament was formed in this area. Fans of geology and natural wonders will be excited to see the place where two continental plates meet and drift apart a little bit every year. After a long, exciting day, we drive north across the whale fjord, Hvalfjörður, to our hotel in Reykholt.

Day Three: Reykholt-Akureyri-Húsavík

The next morning, the group boards the bus again and journeys north to Holtavörðuheiði. Some of the scenery we will pass includes a unique cluster of hills called Vatnsdalshólar and the Vatnsdalur valley. These hills are one of the three things in Iceland that are said to be innumerable. Others are the Arnarvatnsheiði lakes and the Breiðarfjörður islands.

8

www.travels.is

Tour number TRONGR01 The tour’s next stop is in Skagafjörður, which is well known for breeding Icelandic horses and rich agriculture. Akureyri, which is sometimes called Iceland’s northern capital since it is the second largest city, is the next place in the tour. This urban center has multiple universities and schools, museums and a bustling culture. We take an entertaining city tour before journeying on to Húsavík, a village that will be home base for two nights. The drive over will include stops at the Godafoss waterfall, which is both beautiful and historically important. It played a role in introducing Christianity to Iceland. Húsavík is one of the most popular spots in Iceland to take a whale watching tour. They began there in 1995 and have grown every year as more people flock to see the massive sea creatures in their natural habitat.

Day Four: Húsavík – Mývatn - Húsavík

This day will explore many aspects of Iceland’s natural beauty and bird life. Lake Mývatn is the first stop. It is well known for its unique landscape of lava formations, picturesque bays, pseudo craters and vast array of birds. More pseudo craters can be found at Skútustaðargígar. They are formed thousands of years ago from volcanic eruptions. Dimmunborgir, which means dark castles, will impress visitors with the tall lava spires, while Námaskarð will stun you with the brightly colored slopes of old sulfur mines. While it may not smell wonderful, the bubbling mud pits and unique landscape is a must see. The next stops in the tour take us to various places around Lake Mývatn that are spectacular places to see a wide variety of birds. Different species of ducks breed in the area. The roads and areas surrounding the sites are closed during nesting season so tours do not upset the birds, but even then many can be seen in the surrounding areas. The bus will take multiple stops to view them as it goes back to the hotel.

A stunning glacial lagoon called Jökulsárlón gives us the opportunity to board a boat and take a tour up close to the floating icebergs. The road trip continues down roads that follow the southern coastline and up to Vatnajökull and the highest mountain in all of Iceland at 2119 meters. The next two nights will be spend in the Skaftafell National Park.

Day Seven: Skaftafel - Southern Shore – Reykjavík

The tour leaves Skaftafell and continues into the lava fields of Eldhraun, which means fire lay. The S area flooded drastically in 1996 and cut off the town completely. The rising water floated icebergs onto the flat areas, leaving a very unique accent to the sand fields. The unique lava fields of Eldhraun are the result of volcanic eruptions in 1783 that lasted more than a year. All the ash in the air from this caused what Icelanders refer to as the “misty years” when life was very hard. The tour continues through Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, across the black sands of Mýrdalssandur and to Vik village. The next stop is Skogar, which is a tiny village where we can view traditional timber and turf houses. A wonderful folk museum is also worth a look before we journey on to the majestic 60 meter tall Skogar waterfall. The most daring folk, who don’t mind getting a bit wet, can walk all the way around the fall of water, even behind it! The return trip back to Reykjavik leads us through some of the most productive farming land in all of Iceland.

Day Eight: Reykjavik City Tour – Shopping - Blue Lagoon

The city tour of Reykjavik brings us back in time to the early days of timber houses and tiny streets. A quick walk through the city brings us to the location where the first settlers built houses here. Several majestic churches, such as the Hallgrimskirkja Church, Lutheran Cathedral and Catholic Church, impress visitors with their architecture. Guests can take pictures of the famous H house, which was the site of the 1986 meeting between Gorbachev and Reagan.

Day Five: Húsavík- Egilsstaðir-Höfn

The tour continues on the eastern side of Iceland, where a starker and more severe landscape awaits. Much of this land is isolated and feels deserted, but the views of mountains are splendid. The tour stops at the highest altitude residence in Iceland, Möðrudalur, which rests 469 meters over sea level. During the summer months, a service station is in operation and it is a great place to stretch your legs and look around. Take in the queen of Iceland’s mountains and the farm there, which includes a hand built church from 1944. The farmer at the time built it to honor his beloved wife. After the quick stop, the trip continues across the wild lands bordering the Jökuldalur glacier valley. Down Road NR 1, we will delve into the fertile green landscape of Fljótsdalshérað and into southern Iceland at last. At every mile, you will see lush valleys, majestic mountains, the wild coastline and the great fjord Berufjörður. After a short stop in the fishing village of Djúpivogur, we continue on to Höfn and our accommodations for the night.

Day Six: Höfn- Jökulsárlón-Skaftafell

If the weather is clear, the views of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in all of Europe, will be even more magnificent. The main ice cap flows out into multiple tongues descending the mountains into the green land.

Reykjavik city center features the Parliament building and statues of two national heroes: the founder of the city, Skúli Magnússon, and a hero for independence, Jón Sigurðsson. No visit to Reykjavik would be complete without a stop down by the harbor to see all manner of boats coming in and out. Enjoy a 360 degree view of the city and surrounding landscape from the top of the Pearl and buy souvenirs at Kringlan, the largest shopping mall in the area. This glorious journey will be rounded out by a most unusual experience: swimming in the naturally-heated geothermal pools at the Blue Lagoon. The waters are rich in minerals and are said to have healing properties. It is an experience not to be missed or forgotten.

Day Nine: Departure

The airport shuttle will pick you up from your hotel and return you to the Keflavik International Airport for your home trip. We hope your Icelandic journey will give you cherished memories and convince you to return again.

Please Note: Due to weather or road conditions, we may alter the tour schedule to bring the best possible experience to our guests.
