ACV fam showcases Maui’s timeless allure, as agents discover new go-to favourites
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
Anyone who’s been to Maui would be hard pressed to pick just two experiences on the famously beautiful Valley Isle as their very top favourites.
For Maui Visitors Bureau’s Director of PR & Marketing, Leanne Pletcher – who’s so well-versed in the island’s primo spots that it’s her job to know and promote the must-sees – it’s a near-impossible task. But she did it.
“It’s hard to pick just two! Experiencing the Haleakalā sunset and connecting with the community at the Canoe Crop Corner at Wailuku First Friday are my top two picks,” she tells Travelweek.
The breathtaking sunset views at Haleakalā are legendary, while Canoe Crop Corner at Wailuku First Friday features local farmers and chefs educating the community and visitors about Maui’s rich culture of ‘canoe crops’. Plants including kalo (taro), ulu (breadfruit) and many more came by canoe with Hawai’i’s Polynesian settlers some 2,000 years ago, and have proved essential to Hawai’i’s culture – for food, shelter, clothing, medicine and more – ever since.
Could Pletcher’s picks become goto favourites for your Maui-bound clients too? Or any number of the island’s other iconic beauty spots or experiences?
A group of 10 Canadian travel advisors got a chance to find out on a recent fam to Maui with Hawaiʻi Tourism Canada & Air Canada Vacations.
Among the many experiences on the ACV fam, and in a lucky stroke of good timing, agents got a chance to take part in Wailuku First Friday on the final night of the trip. The festive monthly street party brings locals and visitors together to enjoy live music, food, art and shopping, with local vendors, food trucks, crafters, artists and more lining the streets of Wailuku.
UPCOUNTRY MAUI, THE NORTH SHORE AND MORE
Most Canadian travel advisors know that Maui is world famous for its beaches, the sacred ʻIao Valley, views of migrating humpback whales during the winter months, farm-to-table cuisine, and yes, the sunsets (and sunrises) from Haleakalā.
Canadian travel retailers and suppliers selling Hawaiʻi are also no doubt aware that one of Maui’s biggest draws, the historic town of Lahaina, is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire.
What they may not realize is that Maui – the second largest Hawaiʻian island – has a wealth of offerings for travellers that extend far beyond Lahaina. What makes this island special isn’t limited to one town.
The focus on Lahaina’s recovery is a crucial part of any discussion about travel to Maui, but at the same time it’s important to not lose sight of the timeless allure of this incredible destination, from Upcountry Maui, to the North Shore, South Maui and more.
We asked Pletcher what makes Maui so special, and such a perennial favourite with travellers.
“The extraordinary number of Canadian travellers visiting Maui – whether for the first time or on a return trip – speaks volumes about the island’s enduring beauty and, more recently, its remarkable resilience through diversity,” says Pletcher.
“What makes Maui truly special is its breathtaking natural landmarks,
unique towns, and stunning landscapes, unmatched not only in Hawaiʻi but around the world,” she adds. “The island’s charming small towns offer a wealth of opportunities to shop local and dine at familyowned restaurants, each brimming with character.”
For clients who may have already experienced Lahaina in past years and now want to see a different part of Maui, Pletcher has plenty of suggestions.
“The amazing allure to Maui is that it offers an array of explorable regions, all which offer unique adventures and experiences,” she says.
In Upcountry Maui, her suggestions include Haleakalā National Park, Kipahulu District in Haleakalā National Park, MauiWine in Ulupalakua and Oʻo Farm’s tour and breakfast. In South Maui, sunset viewing at Mokapu Beach. In West Maui, Honolua Bay. In Central Maui, ʻIao Valley State Monument Park, Waihee Ridge Trail and Hale Hōʻikeʻike at the Bailey House Museum. And in East Maui, Keʻanae Arboretum – Road to Hāna, and Waiʻānapanapa State Park.
CANADIAN VISITOR STATS & PROFILES
Travellers are certainly finding their way to Maui. Pletcher’s latest Mauispecific stats for visitor arrivals (for October 2024) show significant improvement compared to the year prior, primarily driven by the recovery
from the wildfires. Year-overyear total visitor numbers to Maui increased by 34%.
Canadian visitor spending was reported at US$68 million in October 2023, reflecting an increase compared to previous periods despite fewer visitors, showing resilience in spending per visitor, says Pletcher.
“Overall, tourism on Maui is on a steady path to recovery, with higher overall visitor spending across the island in 2024 compared to the previous year,” she adds.
Looking at Hawaii overall, and Canadian visitors in particular, the Hawaii Tourism Authority reports that in the first 10 months of 2024, there were 331,313 visitors from Canada.
The HTA’s stats drill down even deeper, showing that of the 26,284 Canadian visitors arriving in Hawaii in October 2024, some 17,000 arrived via direct air service from Canada and 9,284 came on domestic flights. More than half of the Canadian visitors in October 2024 had been to Hawai‘i before (56%), while 44% were first-time visitors. In terms of lodging, 66% of Canadian visitors in October 2024 stayed in hotels,17% stayed in condos, 8% stayed in rental homes, 6% stayed in timeshares and 5% stayed with friends and relatives.

own clients in these descriptors, and that can come in handy the next time clients are looking for destination suggestions. For some, Maui will be just the place.
According to the HTA, the profile of Canadian visitors to Maui in 2024 shows a “notable focus on highvalue travellers” who are mindful and respectful of the island’s wildfire recovery efforts.
Canadians are drawn to Maui’s natural beauty and unique culture, says the HTA, prompting the tourism board to target the Canadian market with campaigns like ‘Mālama Maui’ to encourage responsible travel.
The average length of stay for the Canadian visitor is seven days.
The HTA also notes that Canadian visitors typically seek outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and opportunities to contribute to local communities through sustainable tourism initiatives, all plentiful in Hawaii.
Looking ahead to 2025, the HTA says it anticipates continued recovery and growth in tourism, with an emphasis on attracting conscientious visitors who align with Maui’s communitycentred values.

A journey into the heart of Hawai’i with Air Canada Vacations’ partner resorts on Maui, ‘The Valley Isle’
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
By day, ACV’s recent fam to Maui offered up a full and rewarding schedule of authentic experiences, divine meals and, yes, plenty of property tours.
How else to see as many resorts as possible in this idyllic destination, to make the best recommendations to clients?
By night, travel advisors were more than happy to relax, rest up and enjoy Maui’s renowned hospitality at ACV’s two featured resorts on the fam: OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort, and Royal Lahaina Resort and Bungalows.
Both of these Maui properties are available with Air Canada Vacations, along with a host of others, as ACV Area Sales Manager, Anna Teglasi, tells Travelweek.
Site inspections of just a sampling of ACV’s resort product in Mauiincluding Aston at the Maui Banyan; Palms at Wailea Maui by OUTRIGGER; Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott, Maui; Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa; Residence Inn Maui Wailea; Napili Shores Maui by OUTRIGGER; Aston Kāʻanapali Shores; and OUTRIGGER Honua Kai Resort & Spa – gave agents an idea of the range of ACV’s offering on The Valley Isle.
“We offer all sorts of accommodation partners in Maui, from hotels, resorts, villas and condominium options.
Condos are particularly a great option for families and as always best booked in advance,” says Teglasi.
ACV also has a wide variety of excursions and activities for Mauibound clients, plus car rentals “are a must.” ACV’s partner Auto Europe “offers very competitive rates and a robust commission for agents,” adds Teglasi.
And what about flights? Air Canada serves Maui (OGG) out of Vancouver, and Honolulu (HNL) and Kailua/ Kona (KOA) as well, plus Honolulu from Toronto. Of course, booking with Air Canada and ACV means Aeroplan points too.
OUTRIGGER KA’ANAPALI BEACH RESORT
Knowing that the ACV fam agents experienced overnights at both OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort and Royal Lahaina Resort and Bungalow, Travelweek connected with
representatives at both properties to get all the latest updates.
Amber Tesoro, Director of Leisure Sales for OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort, says “our Maui paradise spans 11 lush acres and boasts 432 beautifully appointed rooms. Guests can dive into the island’s rich traditions with daily cultural activities like lei making, hula dancing, Hawai’ian language lessons, ukulele classes, and captivating storytelling.”
The property has a prime location, nestled on world-famous Kāʻanapali Beach.
OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort is more than a place to stay – it’s a journey into the heart of Hawai’i’s culture, Tesoro tells Travelweek. It’s for good reason the property is known as ‘Maui’s Most Hawai’ian Resort.’
“Every moment here is infused with the spirit of aloha,” says Tesoro. “Our staff, or ‘hosts,’ embody this spirit, creating an atmosphere rich with warmth and tradition.”
Upcoming enhancements include a refresh for the Aouli and Wekiu towers with newly reimagined guestrooms, as well as a a refreshed pool experience, the debut of Voyager 47 Club Lounge and a new fitness centre.
We asked Tesoro about OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort’s connection with travel advisors.
“Travel advisors are at the heart of our success, and we’re here to celebrate and support them with the OUTRIGGER Expert Advisor Program,” she says.
Agents completing the program can earn rewards, get access to exclusive resources, and take advantage of industry discounts, plus get VIP perks for clients.
Tesoro’s message for Canadian travel advisors? “There’s no better time than now to invite your clients to experience Maui’s vibrant spirit,” she says.

ROYAL LAHAINA RESORT & BUNGALOWS
Travelweek also connected with Royal Lahaina’s Shauna Nakamura, Senior Regional Director Leisure & Corporate Sales.
Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows was among the first of the Kāʻanapali resorts, according to Nakamura. “It is a spacious, stylish, unforgettable place on one of Maui’s best stretches of sand.”
Royal Lahaina’s staff are top-notch, she adds, and imbue the property with a sense of place that visitors to Maui just can’t get enough of. “They work to ensure every guest feel special and have a wonderful experience staying with us. We are a quaint yet spacious full-service resort situated on 27 acres of pristine oceanfront property. We’re a storied beachfront escape, a place to soak up the good things in life and reconnect with what matters most.”
Royal Lahaina completed a full renovation of its bungalow accommodations in 2024.
The property offers an amazing luau on site, notes Nakamura, plus “our wedding venues and coordinators are some of the best the island has to offer. And we have nightly live music under the stars at The Branches.”
Nakamura says Royal Lahaina recognizes that travel advisors possess in-depth knowledge and understand customer preferences.
“Our Amenity Program is created for our travel advisors,” she says. “When advisors book a guest with us, if they complete the online amenity form, we will provide their guest a welcome amenity personalized from
the advisor. Plus, our Free night program allows advisors to earn free night for themselves with every booking they make.”

MAUI HELICOPTER TOUR
As any travel advisor who’s ever been on a fam knows, the schedule can be packed, but there’s always time for fun.
On the ACV fam, one of the standout experiences was a fly-over tour of Maui with Maverick Helicopters.
Participants got a one-of-akind Hawaiian landing adventure surrounded by waterfalls. The 40-minute, roundtrip flight along the north coast of Maui featured bird’s-eye views of the famous Jaws Surf Break, Hoʻokipa, Road to Hāna and Jurassic Rock with distant views of Haleakalā, capped by a landing in the Hāna Rainforest. See FlyMaverick.com.
There was also time at Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawai’i, the largest living tropical reef aquarium in the western hemisphere. See MauiOceanCenter.com.

AIRLINES
WestJet is re-starting its nonstop service between Calgary and Mexico City, with five weekly flights beginning May 14, 2025. WestJet said the return to MEX reaffirms its leadership as the top carrier connecting Canada and Mexico. WestJet last offered the route in 2018. With the addition of MEX, The WestJet Group, inclusive of WestJet and Sunwing Airlines, will serve 13 cities in Mexico from 24 Canadian cities in 2025. The group will continue to offer more nonstop routes between Canada and Mexico than any other Canadian operator, with more than 200 flights per week during peak travel periods.
In the busy month of December, Sunwing Vacations carried more than 368,000 vacationers from across Canada onboard some 2,246 Sunwing Airlines flights to dozens of sun destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Not only that, but 100% of those flights were successfully completed despite unpredictable winter weather. Andrew Dawson, President of Sunwing Vacations Group, said Canada’s travel advisor community “has been integral to our success this season, and we thank them and our mutual customers for trusting Sunwing as their vacation provider of choice.”
CRUISE
Holland America Line is betting big on Alaska, investing US$70 million to expand guest capacity and elevating land and sea experiences. The investment, which also includes enhancing the Holland America Denali Lodge, will build on the company’s standing in the region, with more opportunities for glacier viewing and more ways to see Alaska’s wildlife than any other cruise line, says Beth Bodensteiner, President, Holland America Line. “It’s truly special that we can bring guests to a lodge at the doorstep of Denali National Park,” said Bodensteiner.
HOTELS
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has returned to Miami with two new hotels: Iberostar Waves Berkeley Shore and Iberostar Waves Miami Beach. The expansion reaffirms the company’s 2024-2025 expansion strategy and commitment to beachfront destinations. Both resorts are located in South Beach and offer premium accommodation. The 96-room Iberostar Waves Berkeley Shore, which started to operate under the Iberostar Waves segment in December, is located in a 1940s building that retains its iconic Art Deco architecture. Meanwhile the 82-room Iberostar Waves Miami Beach became an Iberostar Waves in January 2025.

Trevello World Holdings acquires U.S.-based Gifted Travel Network
TORONTO Trevello World Holdings Inc. is making good on its U.S. expansion goals.
The parent company of Trevello Canada has acquired the NC-based host agency (and luxury specialist) Gifted Travel Network (GTN).
This deal marks the first step in Trevello’s strategic plan to expand beyond Canada and establish a foothold in the U.S. market, says Trevello World Holdings Inc. founder and CEO Morris Chia.
“This is a pivotal moment for Trevello as we bring our proven expertise and commitment to advisor success into the world’s largest travel market,” says Chia. “GTN’s stellar reputation in the luxury sector and dedication to fostering a collaborative, entrepreneurial community make them the perfect partner to help accelerate our growth strategy.”
GTN STILL OPERATING AS ITS OWN BRAND
Trevello first unveiled its U.S. expansion goals in July 2024 and built on the announcement with a Toronto event in November 2024 showcasing its new Momentum program.
Chia says the GTN acquisition immediately establishes Trevello’s presence in the U.S. market, enabling the company to leverage its reputation for excellence and scale to compete in new sectors.
GTN will continue to operate under its brand as a division of Trevello World Holdings.
Jen Cochrane, co-founder and CEO of GTN, says: “GTN’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence align seamlessly with Trevello’s vision for empowering advisors and delivering exceptional travel experiences. This collaboration strengthens the foundations we’ve each built, and together, we’ll continue driving forward as a transformative force in the future of the travel industry.”
CRABILL NO LONGER WITH TWH
Chia is overseeing Trevello’s expansion into the U.S. market, supported by Trevello World Holding’s co-founder and COO Zeina Gedeon, who currently leads operations for Trevello Canada.
Elizabeth Crabill, whose appointment as CEO, Trevello World Holdings was announced last summer as part of the U.S. expansion plans, is no longer with TWH, as Gedeon confirmed to Travelweek. Crabill, who was CEO of CIE Tours for a number of years, was CEO of TWH from July - October 2024.
Cochrane will remain as CEO of GTN, and Cochrane and Meredith Calloway will become shareholders in Trevello World Holdings.
“We are committed to developing a sustainable and rewarding future for travel advisors. With the acquisition of GTN we are taking the first step forward in starting to reimagine what success looks like in this industry,” said Chia.
No launch date in sight
for EU’s EES & ETIAS; UK’s ETA now in effect
TORONTO Whenever the ETIAS is finally set to launch, Europe-selling travel retailers and suppliers – and travellers themselves – might not believe it will actually happen, and who could blame them?
Officially the European Travel Information & Authorization System, the ETIAS has been delayed so many times that the latest setback barely registers. Travelweek first reported on the ETIAS in 2019, two years before it was set to start in 2021. That target came and went, the first of many delays over the years.
The ETIAS won’t launch until at least six months after the EU’s Entry/ Exit System (EES) is up and running. The EES will add another layer of security – and scanners – for nonEU travellers entering what’s known as the Schengen Area (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland).
Meanwhile the ETIAS will require qualifying travellers from some 60 visa-exempt countries, including Canada, to apply for an entry permit in advance of their trip, and pay 7 EUR. It will be valid for 3 years.
THE ACQUISITION IMMEDIATELY ESTABLISHES TREVELLO’S PRESENCE IN THE U.S. MARKET
Think of EES as the back-end, and the ETIAS is the front-end. Until the EES launches, the ETIAS is in a holding pattern.
After multiple yes-it-will-no-it-won’t false starts over the years, the most recent update, issued this past summer, pegged the EES launch for Nov. 10, 2024, and the ETIAS launch for six or so months later. The Nov. 10 date came and went.
While the back-and-forth could be causing some confusion in the marketplace for Europe-bound travellers, the delay of a travel permit requirement, not to mention the fee, is ultimately good news for any traveller, and the industry.
Travelweek reached out to Sandra Moffat, Chair and Marco Frank, Vice Chair, of the European Travel Commission’s (ETC’s) Canada Chapter and will share any updates as they become available. The official ETIAS site is Europa.eu/etias.
Meanwhile the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement took effect Jan. 8. The ETA costs £10 and allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time. It is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Everyone, including babies and children, will need an ETA and travellers can apply on behalf of others. VisitBritain’s Director, Canada, Cathy Stapells told Travelweek that the ETA was rolling out as planned.
Half of Canadians will start planning 2025 vacations in January: survey
EDINBURGH
Skyscanner suggests that just about half of Canadian travellers (47%) will start planning and booking their vacations for 2025 in January.
Independent research for the OTA was conducted in November 2024 through a survey of 1,000 Canadian adults.
As Skyscanner notes, “the desire to choose the perfect destination leaves a staggering 86% of people stuck in decision paralysis, with cost (95%) also a major factor.”
According to the data, Canadians also admit to spending more time planning a vacation (65%) than they do making a major life decision, such as choosing where to live (56%).
“In fact, 86% of Canadians admit that overthinking vacation planning delays their decision and could see them missing out entirely on January deals,” says the travel booking app.
A further 65% of Canadians also claim to take between one and six months to finalize their trips.
The OTA’s list of cost-effective destinations from Canada for 2025 includes Fort Myers, St. John’s, Turin, Boston, Montreal, Montego Bay, Berlin, San Jose, Ponta Delgada and Madrid.

Postcard-perfect St. Maarten wows advisors on recent fam
BY ANNIE CICVARIC
PHILIPSBURG — Hiking in rainforestlike landscapes, relaxing on sugary sun-dappled beaches, enjoying vibrant nightlife and sampling a unique and diverse array of cuisines.
These are just a few good reasons to visit the ‘Friendly Island’ of St. Maarten, as a group of Canadian travel advisors recently discovered during an exclusive fam co-hosted by the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau and Travelweek last month.
For most, it was their first visit to the island, and all were thrilled to explore its distinct character as the smallest landmass divided by two nations – the Netherlands and France – spanning just 88 square kilometres.
But while this tiny island may lack in size, it punches way above its weight in beauty and diversity.
“This is not your typical Caribbean island,” remarked David Herson, an advisor with TPI in Toronto.
“From breathtaking scenic views to nature and hiking, St Maarten offers much more than beautiful beaches. I highly recommend eating offproperty; there’s a fabulous culinary scene on the island that deserves to be explored.”
and exploring spots off the beaten path, away from hotels and resorts.” She also recommends the Grand Case area, on the French side, “as a foodie’s paradise,” where you’ll find some of the best food options on the island.

After all, with over 100 nationalities residing on the island, it’s no surprise that St. Maarten is known as the Caribbean culinary capital. Each dining experience was part and parcel of our delightful culinary journey enjoyed throughout the week, featuring local must-tries like Guavaberry rum and warm Johnny cakes – though not typically enjoyed together!
Sarah Hassett from Marlin Travel Brantford suggests “eating local
Travel pros should know that the island’s local eateries run the gamut from casual local fare, such as Jimmy’s BBQ, where you can enjoy your meal roadside at an outdoor picnic table, to more upscale dining experiences with white-cloth service at establishments like Moulin Fou, a French fine dining restaurant that hosted our group’s farewell dinner.
Rounding up some other exciting highlights from our week included … Ziplining at Rainforest Adventures, featuring the Flying Dutchman, with the steepest zipline in the world.
Coastal hiking and discovering pristine secluded beaches led by Seagrape Tours.
A fun session in Johnny cake making hosted by TJ’s Cassava Coal Pot Restaurant.
A thrilling catamaran excursion onboard the Renegade Luxury Catamaran.
Watching planes fly overhead at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, appearing close enough to touch.
These activities showcased the island’s diverse experiences and additional attractions, earning an enthusiastic two thumbs up from all the fam participants.
CHANNELING OUR INNER ATHLETES
If 2024 was the year for sports fans to travel, then 2025 is shaping up to be the year for wannabe athletes, with predictions indicating that athletic adventures will be one of the biggest travel trends this year.
Embracing the active and wellness trend movement, our group participated in one of the many races available on St. Maarten.
The St. Maarten Road Runners, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of
the Sint Maarten community, hosted the race event on Dec. 8.
Now completing its third year, the race offers distances from 5km to a full marathon and is open to walkers, beginners and advanced runners alike.
The event also encourages visitors to participate and stay active while on vacation.
According to race board member Marcel De Wit, the event has grown yearly, with “the unique location and the fantastic views at the finish – overlooking the ports and cruise ships – make the race much more compelling.”

community project, the New Start Children Foundation (NSCF).
The foundation, run by the remarkable Miss Sally, has provided a home and care for children in need, from newborns all the way up to age 18, for more than 11 years.
Our team came together, bringing six suitcases filled with much-needed supplies, along with a monetary donation. The visit was touching and heartfelt for everyone involved.
Hassett emphasized the importance of the community give-back project: “Finding a way to give back to a community was such a heartwarming experience. Knowing that I could play a small part in bringing joy to the children during tough times was incredibly humbling.”
Hershon also shared his thoughts: “Giving back during the holiday season was important. It was so nice to have the opportunity to visit Miss Sally’s home, engage with the children and put smiles on their faces.”
