The 5 AI tools every travel advisor should be using, according to tech expert
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
TORONTO — It’s safe to say that Dan Christian is a bit of a techie.
With over 20 years of experience, he’s led digital initiatives at Carlson Wagonlit and Lonely Planet, drove global marketing and technology for G Adventures, and spent nearly a decade at The Travel Corporation where he spearheaded the digital transformation of 40 distinct travel brands.
Now, he’s the CEO of Acceleration Team, an advisory firm he founded in 2022 that helps start-ups successfully scale post-pandemic, as well as host of the ‘Travel Trends’ podcast, which further solidifies his reputation as a tech expert in the travel space.
So, who better than Christian to advise travel advisors on how to navigate the often confusing and overwhelming landscape of AI? Though we’re only at the start of the AI revolution, artificial intelligence is already changing the travel landscape “with its potential to analyze vast amounts of data and personalize experiences,” says Christian. Steadfast in his belief that AI is going to “transform every industry,” including travel, which he says is one of the largest and most dynamic, Christian tells Travelweek that artificial intelligence is reshaping how businesses operate – and how travellers plan and enjoy their journeys.
First, end-to-end personalization knows no bounds with the help of AI. “Imagine receiving custom travel
itineraries that automatically include accommodations, transport, dining and sightseeing options based on your unique preferences, all while staying within your budget,” says Christian. “AI will enable businesses to act not just as service providers but as expert travel consultants.”
Next, AI-driven AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) tools will allow travellers to explore destinations, hotel rooms and experiences digitally before even making a booking. “These immersive experiences will give customers greater confidence in their choices, reducing misaligned expectations upon arrival,” adds Christian.
In addition, AI is making way for smarter virtual travel assistants that go beyond just handling travel logistics. “These assistants will deliver real-time advice on directions, traffic updates, local hot spots and even cultural etiquettes, enhancing the traveller experience every step of the way,” he says. A perfect example of this, adds Christian, is iWander. co, an AI-powered travel companion that has already partnered with City Sightseeing, an open-top, sightseeing tour bus operator.
“This enables travellers to jump off the bus and enjoy a walking tour with an AI guide, extending the customer experience and providing an entirely new line of business for travel companies that want to offer digital AI-powered experiences,” says Christian. “There is an exciting future here, given that today only 3% of guests to a destination take a walking
or guided tour, which means there is opportunity to tap into the other 97%. It’s just the beginning and this technology is opening up new ways to travel, which is really exciting.”
WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE TRAVEL ADVISORS?
The explosion of AI-powered tools has undeniably shifted the way consumers research, plan and book travel, which begs the question: Where does this leave travel advisors?
According to Christian, with AI platforms offering instant recommendations, flight comparisons and even personalized itineraries, it’s natural to question the relevance of advisors in this evolving landscape. However, their story is far from one of obsolescence.
“Instead, AI is transforming the role of travel advisors, sharpening their value in ways technology alone simply cannot replicate,” he says.
For example, Christian says AI tools can struggle with intricate travel plans that involve multi-destination trips, unique requests or unclear preferences. “Travel agents thrive in this environment, leveraging their knowledge and creativity to craft tailored itineraries with a personal touch,” he says.
Also, though AI is now getting involved in automating travel alternatives in the event something goes wrong, whether it’s a cancelled flight, a missed connection or an overbooked hotel, Christian says that
it still doesn’t measure up to a travel advisor with industry connections who can resolve issues quickly, advocate on behalf of their clients and ensure minimal disruptions.
“Humans have that unique quality called empathy,” he notes.
Even more, travel agents often have access to deals, upgrades and experiences that AI platforms can’t necessarily access or provide. Plus, consumers often need to crossreference multiple AI platforms or sift through endless reviews to finalize their travel choices, which takes up time. And, as Christian notes, AI personalization focuses on past user data, often missing more subtle factors like a client’s aspirations, cultural experiences and underthe-radar destinations. “Seasoned travel advisors excel at infusing trips with authentic, thoughtful touches that elevate ordinary vacations into unforgettable experiences,” he says.
THE 5 MUST-USE AI TOOLS
When it comes down to it, AI is here to stay, whether we like it or not. But instead of viewing it as a threat, says Christian, travel professionals should rethink it as a powerful ally.
“By integrating AI-driven research tools into their processes, advisors free up time to focus on client relations, itinerary customization and problem-solving. Advisors who adapt and harness AI will find themselves positioned as indispensable experts
offering the best of both worlds: the efficiency of modern technology paired with the sophisticated human touch only a skilled professional can deliver,” he says.
Here are Christian’s recommendations for five AI tools that every advisor should be using:
• Synthesia: This powerful AI video platform allows users to create studio-quality videos complete with AI avatars and voiceover in just minutes. “It’s ideal for travel advisors who want to create engaging destination videos or promotional content for their clients,” says Christian. “You can create professional-quality videos without any prior video editing experience.” https:// www.synthesia.io/
• Mindtrip: This itinerary planning tool allows users to build travel itineraries based on their preferences with photos, maps and reviews. Says Christian: “It’s now being utilized for B2B partners including DMO’s. This can be helpful for idea generation and will give you a sense of what is empowering consumers today.” https://mindtrip.ai/
• Sion Central: A comprehensive AI tool for travel agencies that enables commission tracking, payment processing, autoreconciliation, reporting and analytics and more. “This one is great for host agencies and Independent advisors so they

can track their commissions and ensure they’re getting paid timely by suppliers and partners,” says Christian. https://www. sioncentral.com/
• The Trip Boutique: This tool serves as a personal AI assistant that facilitates client onboarding, transforms raw information into smart profiles, builds itinerary proposals, automates client communication and more. “This is ideal for advisors and agencies that would benefit from an automated CRM system,” says Christian. It builds out custom itineraries and assists with the back-office flow and follow-up.” https://www.thetripboutique.ai/ travel-advisors
• Jasper: Boasting the “biggest library of AI Marketing Apps,” Jasper offers over 80 Apps spanning every marketing function. Tasks include writing blog posts, composing product descriptions, Instagram captions and social media ad copy, optimizing websites’ SEO, crafting promotional videos and more. A favourite tool for Christian, he says: “Jasper’s AI-driven suggestions save me valuable time by generating compelling headlines, refining tone and style, and tailoring content specifically to the target audience. It has become an essential tool in my daily workflow, helping me tackle a wide range of marketing tasks.” https:// www.jasper.ai/

Tips from Iberostar Cuba’s Zaldivar, Pacheco & Gignac for getaways this winter
TORONTO Iberostar Cuba Hotels & Resorts has a message for Canadian travel advisors – and it’s straight from the hotel company’s own Business Development Director, and Business Development Managers, here in Canada.
Cuba is open for business and ready for winter sun-seekers, and that includes Iberostar Cuba properties across the island.
Iberostar Cuba Hotels & Resorts has 14 resorts in Varadero, Cayo Cruz, Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo Guillermo, Holguin and Trinidad, plus five more hotels in Havana.
Alexeis Torres Velázquez, Marketing and Communication Director for Iberostar Cuba Hotels & Resorts, also weighed in with an update after Cuba’s challenges in recent weeks.
Despite the incidents of recent days, marked by power outages and damage caused by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael in Eastern and Western Cuba, Iberostar Cuba Hotels and Resorts is pleased to announce that its hotels remain fully operational, says Velázquez.
The last quarter of 2024 “has been a period of harsh tests for Cuba, and in particular for its tourism sector, but it has also been an opportunity to overcome obstacles,” adds Velázquez.
“That is possible because all our hotels are equipped with back-up electric generators. These gensets provide stable electricity service (including for air conditioners), as
well as water supply, hygiene and food safety according to international standards. We can also affirm that we do not lack any food, since the existence of an own supplier for Iberostar Cuba guarantees adequate stocks of all the necessary products. After the multiple challenges we have faced, we are stronger and better prepared to receive clients from all over the world,” he says.
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ZALDIVAR, PACHECO & GIGNAC
For Iberostar Cuba’s Business Development Director in the Canadian market, Mariela Zaldívar, the geographical proximity of Cuba to Canada is a huge selling point. “For a country as large as Canada, where flying from Toronto to Vancouver is close to five hours, in just three hours you can arrive in Varadero, Holguin, Cayo Coco or Santa Clara airport, which serves Cayo Ensenachos, so you can be in one of the best rated beaches in the world,” says Zaldívar.
No less important is the deep bond established between Cubans and Canadians over the years, she adds. “Let’s not forget the people – bighearted and friendly Cubans – who will make you feel right at home. I’m a Cuban myself, and I can tell you I feel the love of Canadians when I say I am a Cuban born. So, Cuba is a destination that cannot be missed on your travel list.”
From its unique culture and rich history to its beautiful beaches and lush landscapes, “Cuba
offers an unparalleled travel experience that is both unique and unforgettable,” says Zaldívar.
Meanwhile Iberostar Cuba’s BDMs in Canada, Angel Pacheco and Jason Gignac, say an Iberostar Cuba getaway offers the perfect mix of urban and beach experiences.
For Pacheco, visiting Havana and Varadero in a single trip is a perfect example. “It was a magnificent opportunity not only to visit historic Havana sites and having a tour of Old Havana, but also to experience the quality and worldclass service of Iberostar Selection Parque Central. We were also able to combine this trip with an unforgettable time at Varadero beach as well,” says Pacheco.
For Gignac, the best combination was a resort stay at the Iberostar Selection Varadero with a few days at the city hotel Iberostar Selection Parque Central in Havana. “If you truly like the authentic
Cuba experience, you must do the combination stay,” says Gignac.
Gignac suggests starting a Cuba vacation with two or three days in Havana. “This Cuban city has a million and one stories to tell. From the beautiful historical architecture to the educational walking of Old Havana, there is something for everyone. And you must enjoy a daiquiri or two from Hemingway’s favourite bar in Havana: the Floridita, which is very close to Iberostar Selection Parque Central. Then conclude your Cuban vacation with a rejuvenating stay at one of our stunning all-inclusive resorts.”
Clients should know that the 20242025 winter season will bring an important milestone: the opening of Iberostar Selection La Habana. The capital’s skyscraper, at 155 meters high, will be star number 20 in the Iberostar Cuba portfolio.
NEW PROMOTIONS & TRAVEL TIPS FROM THE ‘INSPIRATION CUBA’ BLOG
Iberostar Cuba started the winter season in fine fashion, launching a sale that started as ‘Black Friday’ and soon became ‘Black Month’, with significant discounts for bookings made Nov. 8 - Dec. 8, 2024 for travel through Oct. 31, 2025.
Clients (and their travel advisors) can keep up with all things Iberostar Cuba using the company’s ‘Inspiration Cuba’ blog, featuring personal and relatable stories for would-be travellers.
Says the company: “In this new communication channel, which can be accessed through our website, articles about the beaches, culture, gastronomy, sustainable practices and destination tips can be found. Inspiration Cuba explores the rhythms and sensations that will make a stay on the big island of the Caribbean a memorable experience. We invite everyone to visit the blog, get inspired, write down tips and share them so that an increasing number of clients are convinced the best vacations ever are those booked with Iberostar Cuba.”
Travel tips include the great views from the sixth floor of the Iberostar Grand Packard, with the best sightlines of the Bay of Havana, the
Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro and La Cabaña Fortress. “The terrace invites you to enjoy a cocktail, to feel the breeze coming from the sea, while waiting for the golden hour. The infinity pool, which blends with the blue of the capital’s harbour, reveals the beauty, the horizon at eye level and the charm of that beautiful area of the city,” says the company.
‘Inspiration Cuba’ blog users might also find out more about Iberostar’s Coral hotels, all-inclusive resorts on the seafront. These smaller adultsonly hotels offer butler service for a personalized experience. “We always say that our Coral clients book one hotel and enjoy two, since these guests have access to all the services and facilities of the Selection hotels, always nearby. We have Coral hotels in the Keys in the north of Cuba and in Holguin, our window to the East of the country.”
One such property, Iberostar Coral Ensenachos, is 90 minutes from Santa Clara airport and offers 46 villas, à la carte beach and tailored service. Says Iberostar: “The Coral experience is ideal for travellers seeking the peace of the blue sea and the proximity of attentive and personalized service.”
AIRLINES
Air Canada has been named the World’s Leading Airline to North America at the World Travel Awards. Said Lisa M. Pierce, Air Canada’s Vice President of Global Sales and Air Canada Vacations: “I thank our more than 39,000 dedicated employees who transport customers safely and deliver customer service excellence globally every day. I also extend my appreciation to our loyal customers for their continued support and trust.” Winners in the World Travel Awards are determined based on a worldwide poll involving qualified executives in the travel sector, alongside consumer travel buyers.
According to American Express Global Business Travel’s latest Air Monitor 2025 report, airfares will rise just slightly across most regions globally in 2025 as airline capacity continues to rise, putting more supply in the market. The report anticipates that, after a period of sharp fluctuations, airfare prices are starting to stabilize globally. Next year’s price points should mark a shift from the more volatile pricing patterns of previous years, noted the report. “However, despite these stabilizations, the underlying cost of air travel is likely to remain high,” said Amex GBT.

This dual approach is designed to drive growth across the sector and ensure the swift recovery of local businesses.

a sustainable and rewarding career path for our advisors.”
Momentum also empowers advisors with ownership of their business earnings. Advisors can pass their business and its associated revenues to others, with the ability to will their earnings to future generations.
“This legacy-building component ensures that our advisors have something to show for their hard work, something that can benefit their families for years to come,” Gedeon explained.
The response to Momentum has been overwhelmingly positive, she added, with over 50% of advisors signing up within days of the announcement.
It reflects Trevello’s focus on fostering community and collaboration. “Momentum is more than a program – it’s a commitment to our advisors, suppliers, and community,” said Gedeon. “Together, we’re creating perpetual growth and building something unstoppable.”
PUBLIC LISTING: THE PATH TO GLOBAL LEADERSHIP
Trevello’s vision extends far beyond its innovative host model. The company is set to go public through
its merger with M3 Capital Corp on the TSX Venture Exchange, with the combined entity named Trevello World Holdings Inc. Trevello will hold majority ownership of the public entity, a move that reinforces its mission to lead as an advisor-centric host agency while providing the resources to scale its global operations.
“The merger gives us the resources to think bigger and deliver even more value to our advisors and partners,” said Gedeon. “We’re transitioning from a Canadian brand to a North American and ultimately a global brand.”
The public listing will provide Trevello with the financial foundation to enhance its buying power through consolidated contracts, she added. These unified agreements will allow the company to negotiate better terms with suppliers while maintaining regional autonomy, ensuring that advisors in each market benefit from tailored support.
SUPPORTING ADVISORS AT EVERY STAGE
Trevello’s focus on empowering advisors is evident not just
through Momentum but also through initiatives like Launchpad, a program designed for new-toindustry advisors.
Susan Lawson, Director of Engagement at Trevello, emphasized the importance of nurturing new talent: “We recognize that people entering the travel industry come from all walks of life. Launchpad provides them with the training, tools, and community support they need to succeed.”
Launchpad has been instrumental in helping newcomers establish their footing, with some already achieving the prestigious Chairman’s Circle status, said Lawson. Trevello also invests in ongoing education and themed events to equip its network with the knowledge and resources to grow their businesses.
“Our themed events focus on exponential growth,” said Lawson. “We want advisors to learn how to build their business, leverage marketing tools, and use innovative technology to sell more efficiently.”
A FUTURE OF INNOVATION AND GROWTH
Momentum and the merger with M3 Capital are part of Trevello’s broader vision to redefine the travel industry. By combining innovative programs, global expansion, and a steadfast commitment to advisors, Trevello is creating a new standard for host agencies worldwide.
Gedeon summed it up: “We truly believe the host model is broken. Momentum and our upcoming public listing are just the beginning of a new era. We’re building a sustainable, empowering model for advisors that will drive success for everyone in our ecosystem.”

Meliá Hotels Int’l founder Gabriel Escarrer Juliá passes away at 89

Air Canada ready to expand its Digital Identification boarding tech at YVR
MONTREAL Air Canada has expanded its Digital Identification program as a boarding option for almost all of its domestic flights at Vancouver International Airport.
The move follows a successful pilot project on select flights at YVR.
Tom Stevens, VP, Canadian Airports and Customer Experience Strategy at Air Canada, says the airline and the airport are the first in Canada to invest in the technology and equipment to modernize the Canadian airport travel experience by offering travellers the convenience and security of digital recognition at the gate to confirm their identities.
“We are thrilled to take a leadership position with the Vancouver Airport Authority in using technology to simplify and transform boarding of almost all our YVR-departing domestic flights,” says Stevens.
Digital identification is readily used to streamline numerous daily activities including unlocking phones and entering workplaces, he adds.
“Bringing this technology to the gate enhances the travel experience and [makes] boarding flights convenient and effortless. The feedback from customers, notably our frequent flyers, during the pilot phase was very positive. We look forward
to expanding this technology to additional airports.”
Benefits for enrolling in Air Canada’s Digital Identification program include:
• Convenience: Building on the app’s top features (like real-time flight updates, baggage tracking, and Aeroplan account access), Digital ID “introduces a new level of ease when boarding”
• Faster boarding: With Air Canada’s Digital ID “there’s no need to search for your phone, boarding pass, or physical ID. Simply walk up to the camera screen, and your identity is confirmed in seconds, reducing wait times and simplifying the travel experience.” Customers using Digital ID will be among the first to board the aircraft
• Security: Air Canada’s Digital ID technology securely confirms identity while streamlining the boarding process. Participation is entirely optional and based on the passenger’s consent
Digital identification is also available for customers to enter Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounges in Toronto (YYZ), Calgary and San Francisco, as well as the Air Canada Café in Toronto. Additional airport boarding gates and touchpoints are planned to come on-line in future.
Air Canada’s digital identification is not related to any governmentsponsored program such as NEXUS, Global Entry or US CBP Mobile Passport Control (MPC).

JTB brings the heat with ‘Rhythms of Jamaica’ winter season kick-off
BY ANNIE CICVARIC
TORONTO Over 200 travel professionals convened at the Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto last month for the Jamaica Tourist Board’s kick-off to the winter season, showcasing the island’s abundant cultural legacy as well as updates on the numerous resorts and attractions Canadians enjoy year after year.
“The industry is back. Are we back or are we back?” asked Dan Hamilton, District Sales Manager for the JTB.
“Although we have seen you several times with our supplier partner events, we still want to meet with you. We still want you to know how important you are to our business. We appreciate you and are glad you are here,” added Hamilton.
As the peak of the winter season bookings for sun destinations approach, the JTB has kept busy participating in tour operator launches and various events over the past several weeks and months.
And they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, they are ramping up activities and plowing full steam ahead.
AND HOW CAN THEY NOT BE?
After coming off a prolific year, with over 4.1 million visitors in 2023, an 11% increase in arrivals in the first quarter of 2024, and a 42% repeat guest rate – all a true testament to the island’s success – the JTB is staying Jamaica strong in bolstering their efforts to maintain and even surpass this year’s momentum.
With a newly expanded and energetic business development team in tow, they are poised to do just that.
Rounding out the event was an educational session highlighting destination and supplier training featuring some of Jamaica’s most popular resorts and new entrants, such as the new Princess All-Inclusive Resorts in the Negril resort area.
OTHER PARTNERS INCLUDED SEA GARDEN
Beach Resort, Playa Hotels & Resorts, Hyatt Resorts, Royalton Blue Diamond, Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts, Iberostar, Canlink representing Tryall Club and the Jamaica Inn, Catalonia Hotels, Bahia Principe, the Decameron Resorts and tour operators Sunwing and WestJet Vacations.
As the evening unfolded, Angella Bennett, the JTB’s Regional Director of Canada, highlighted the significance of the travel specialist reward program, One Love Affair, recognizing top-producing Jamaica travel specialists.
Deemed as ‘the Oscars of travel’ accolade by the tourist board, she encouraged agents to enroll.
Of the top 50 agents across North America for 2023, 15 of those achievers were in Canada.
“This is an amazing accomplishment, one of our highest numbers since I’ve been here,” said Bennett. “Canada continues to dominate this event. Please put on your hat and be strategic. It is not difficult to get to these numbers. I am challenging you, and we will celebrate together.”
Also on the agenda was the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation, a charity near and dear to Bennett, who sits on the advisory board.
The foundation supports the new building of schools in rural Jamaica. A spring Jam-Walk occurs in Toronto each year, raising funds to support the foundation. JTB is an annual contributing participant through sponsorship and a JTBentered team mainly made up of travel professionals.
“I want to announce that this year, the Jam-Walk is on 24 May, and we invite you all to come, walk with us, register, raise funds, and join the JTB group and let’s build the 28th school in Jamaica together,” said Bennett.
On a separate note, Bennett addressed the recent strikes affecting some of the local hotels on the island. She assured the room that the Ministry of Labour and the hoteliers would work together to find a swift solution and ensure minimal disruption to their clients.
After all, “no one wants a long strike,” said Bennett.
The fun-filled event concluded with a Jamaican-inspired dinner, prizes and a performance by the Kashe Dance Ensemble, which entertained guests with various eras of Jamaican music and dance forms.
There was also a closing heartfelt message shared by Bennett. “On behalf of my entire team here, I want to express our gratitude. We commit to continue supporting you in every way possible. With our expanded team, we have gained new power and new energy. We truly appreciate you, and thank you for tonight. Let’s hear it for Jamaica.”

Canadian travellers will need UK govt.’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
TORONTO VisitBritain has issued a heads up about the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for visitors, including Canadians.
VisitBritain notes that the UK government is introducing the ETA for visitors who don’t currently need a visa for short stays. The new system is part of efforts to improve border security and prevent misuse of the UK immigration system.
Canadians can apply for an ETA as of Nov. 27, 2024, and will need it to travel to the UK starting Jan. 8, 2025.
The ETA costs £10 and allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time. It will be valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Everyone,
including babies and children, will need an ETA and travellers can apply on behalf of others.
The ETA will be required for visits such as tourism, business, visiting family and friends, short-term study and even just transiting through the UK. Other visits include stays of up to three months under the Creative Worker visa concession or for a permitted paid engagement.
According to VisitBritain, the easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA app. “Most applications will be processed within three working days, but sometimes it may take a little longer. The new system will help make travel easier while ensuring stronger security at the UK border,” says the tourism board.
To find out more about the ETA and how to apply, visit GOV.UK. The website also has helpful videos to explain the process.
THE SYSTEM WILL HELP MAKE TRAVEL EASIER AND ENSURE STRONGER

As part of its mandate, the WTAAA engages “with like-minded organizations across the globe with a mission to improve business for member organizations, to share common problem-solving strategies and to foster more indepth and meaningful working relationships within the travel and tourism industry,” according to a statement from ACTA.
Protecting travellers’ rights while ensuring the future success of the travel advisory profession is the dual mission of the WTAA.

For travel advisors, the WTAAA is focused on providing the resources and support needed to navigate the evolving complexities of the industry. This includes advocating for fair professional fees, addressing training concerns related to new technologies, and working with airlines and other industry stakeholders to ensure a level playing field.
Members of the association include representation from 57 countries on six continents across the globe.
