TORONTO With no sign of surrender in the U.S.-Canada trade war –and as Canadian travel advisors reacquaint themselves with all the tour operators offering Canadian product, anticipating big demand – one company is eager to keep a high profile with travel advisors in this market.
Calgary-based Anderson Vacations, in business for more than 30 years, has long offered an interesting duo of destinations: Canada, and the South Pacific.
While some travel advisors think ‘inbound’ when they hear about Anderson’s Canada product – and certainly the company does its fair share of inbound business – domestic travel within Canada by Canadians, plus inbound, represents 70% of the company’s market.
And as an FYI for any agents with clients looking beyond Canada this summer – say, to the South Pacific – outbound travel to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti accounts for 30% of Anderson’s operations.
But home is where the heart is, and for Anderson, that’s Canada. “We are true Canadian travel experts, and Canada remains our primary focus. We offer tours across every province, including off-the-beaten-path and Indigenous tourism experiences,” said Anderson’s GM, Andres Reinoso.
Anderson is also big on travel advisors. It’s a preferred partner for Ensemble Travel, Travel Leaders and many more.
Asked for the company’s message for Canadian travel agents who think that most Canadians book domestic trips without an agents help, Reinoso said that travel advisors’ expertise when it comes to helping clients make informed decisions, while offering added safety, time and cost savings, and ongoing support before, during, and after their trips, is invaluable.
“Advisors also introduce travellers to off-the-beaten-path experiences that they may not have considered otherwise,” he added.
“We strongly value our partnerships with travel advisors. We know that travel advisors play a crucial role in the travel experience by providing personalized recommendations and guidance on unique destinations.”
Agent know-how is especially key for Canadian travellers booking Canadian getaways. It may come as a surprise to those who believe most domestic bookings are made direct, but as Reinoso puts it, “travel advisors play a key role in domestic tourism in Canada and are a significant portion of our business. Many Canadians are unfamiliar with destinations beyond their province and seek curated travel experiences tailored to their interests, budget and accessibility needs.”
The company puts its money where its mouth is, offering 1013% commission to travel advisors, depending on the product (FIT or group) and their agency affiliation. There are also cash gift card and FAM incentives.
Currently Anderson is offering a free seat on one of its Maritime Mosaic and Newfoundland small group trips, worth over $11,000. The spot will be awarded to the agent who books the most seats on Anderson’s small group tours by April 30.
“THIS
As many Canadian travellers book away from the U.S., and look to Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories for travel inspiration, we asked Reinoso about the ramp-up of Canadians wanting to travel in Canada this year.
In his words, “as a Canadian tour operator who has long promoted the beauty of our country to fellow Canadians, this domestic travel trend is not new to us.”
“In 2022, our domestic travel division surged due to lingering international COVID-19 travel restrictions, and now economic factors like the weak loonie and trade tensions are driving another spike,” he said.
He added that Canadians “are prioritizing exploring their backyard and supporting local businesses, which is reflected in our domestic bookings this year.”
Anderson’s business model, with a sizeable portion of its Canada bookings coming from international travellers, including Americans, gives the company a unique perspective on how the trade war and weak loonie are impacting travel: “Interestingly, Americans remain eager to visit, but Canadian cancellations to the U.S. are rising,” he said.
Anderson specializes in small group tours, custom offerings and FIT. So
what’s booking especially well in Canada for summer 2025?
Here’s Reinoso’s take: “The Rockies corridor (Alberta and B.C.) remains a top choice for small group, road and rail trips. Atlantic Canada, particularly Newfoundland, is seeing high demand as travellers seek unique experiences. Northern destinations – Yukon, NWT, and the Arctic – are growing as interest in remote Canada spikes. City breaks in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Toronto are always popular, and self-drive itineraries continue to appeal to budgetconscious travellers.”
With the well-travelled domestic explorer in mind, we also asked about Canada’s hidden gems.
“Each province has its hidden gems, often closer than Canadians realize,” said Reinoso. “In Alberta, Waterton National Park and the Badlands offer breathtaking landscapes with fewer crowds. Haida Gwaii, the archipelago off the coast of B.C., provides a unique Indigenous experience, showcasing the deep cultural heritage, stunning scenery and traditions of the Haida Nation. Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula boasts spectacular sea and mountain views, surrounded by stunning national parks.”
One of the company’s best-selling small group experiences remains its Yellowknife, NWT tour. “With the solar cycle at its peak this year, it’s the perfect time for travel agents to offer clients a bucket-list aurora borealis experience.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Anderson is reintroducing Alaska and Churchill to its group tour portfolio in 2026, enhancing its range of remote and wildlife-focused experiences.
On the back-end, the company is also refreshing its brand and website and expanding its product range “to align with emerging travel trends.”
Out of all the trends driving booking patterns in 2025, multigenerational travel continues to have a major impact. A welcome holdover from the ‘revenge travel’ era immediately following the pandemic, families are prioritizing experiences that bring them together in meaningful ways, said Reinoso.
Meanwhile small group travel continues to grow in popularity, he added, “as travellers seek more exclusive curated experiences with the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals.”
Flexibility in itineraries is also in demand, with travellers preferring trips that allow time for personal exploration at their own pace.
“Booking patterns are shifting,” said Reinoso. “More travellers are securing their trips well in advance to guarantee availability in highdemand destinations like the Canadian Rockies. Additionally, there is a heightened interest in cultural experiences, particularly those that allow deeper engagement with Indigenous communities and their connection to the land.”

TORONTO A new wave of travellers is leading the charge and redefining the travel landscape, says Intrepid Travel, choosing adventure, independence and deeper connections.
At a recent industry event, the tour operator partnered with JourneyWoman – established in 1994 as the first travel website for women aged 50 and older – to launch a groundbreaking study about the growing travel demographic that is women 50+.
Titled ‘Invisible No More: Understanding the Women 50+ Traveller,’ the study emphasizes the influence these women have in the travel industry and their increasing spending power and desire for independent travel experiences.
Coinciding with Women’s History Month, the event included insights from a panel of trailblazing women that included Tara McCallum, Head of Marketing for Intrepid Travel, North America, Hala Benkhaldoun, General Manager for Morocco at Intrepid Travel, Joyce E. Perrin, Canadian author, and Carolyn Ray, CEO of JourneyWoman who also moderated the panel.
“This isn’t a demographic to market to as an afterthought – this is now the travel industry’s most powerful consumer group,” said McCallum. “They’re ready for adventure, many having put travel on hold due to family or career. Now, they want to do something for themselves.”
Currently, women over 50 represents the fastest-growing travel demographic, with spending in North America projected to rise from $358 billion in 2025 to $746 billion by 2035. In Canada, 54% (10.1 million) of all travellers are women, and more than half of these women are over 55.
Moreover, this generation is also the most empowered yet, making 98% of travel decisions within their households.
The study also revealed that 61% of North American women aged 50 and older now prefer solo travel, up from 50% in 2020. This include travelling independently and solo in a group.
So, how does this paradigm shift in demographics affect travel?
With an anticipated 138% increase in spending from 2025 to 2035, solo travel is seeing unprecedented growth.
Women over 50 view travel as an integrated part of their lifestyle, a ‘must-have’ and part of how they learn and grow.
Increased longevity also contributes towards this trend. “Women over 50 are living longer, healthier and more active lives, integrating travel into their lifestyles to learn, build connections, and expand their worldview,” said Carolyn Ray of JourneyWoman.
As such, life cycles are also changing from the old way of thinking, with learning, working and retiring to be replaced with a constant state of knowledge and curiosity.
Despite their growing influence, 34% of women aged 50 and older feel overlooked by the travel industry, highlighting a disconnect between the industry’s assumptions and this segment’s active, adventurous nature.
The demand for adventurous travel is evident, with 56% of respondents preferring lesser-known destinations, 60% taking up to three trips a year, and 65% opting for slower, longer travel experiences. Over half (56%) plan to take at least one or two of these trips as a group tour.
With this in mind, the research shows that those between the ages of 65 and 74 are the most affluent and spend the most.
While single supplements can be a challenge for some travellers, with only 14% currently use travel advisors, this market segment presents significant potential for growth.
“They are no longer the industry’s afterthought – they are its future,” says Ray.
Intrepid Travel has observed the growing influence of women aged 50+ through the success of its Women’s Expeditions. Launched in 2018, these all-female groups, curated by women, are led by local female guides.
THIS IS NOW THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY’S MOST POWERFUL CONSUMER GROUP. THEY’RE READY FOR ADVENTURE
Meanwhile, with over 900 tours on the roster, bookings for Women’s Expeditions have grown 46% in 2024, and 2025 is already up 120% from the previous year.
The average age of participants from North America is 51, with 80% of them travelling solo.
“The future of travel is undeniably going to be shaped by women aged 50 and above,” said Leigh Barnes, President of the Americas at Intrepid Travel. “Intrepid is committed to providing experiences celebrating this demographic’s curiosity and strength. It isn’t just about offering tours but empowering women to explore the world on their terms.”
Joyce Perrin, at 88, is a true testament to this new travel phenomenon. Having travelled to 150 countries herself since starting her travel journeys in her 50s, she has proven that “it’s never too late.”
New reports indicate that Sandals Resorts International could be sussing out interest for a buyer, with a potential price tag of more than US$6 billion. The biggest players in the global hotel industry, including Marriott International, Hyatt and more, are already on their way to explosive growth in the popular all-inclusive segment. Rumours of a possible sale have popped up over the past several years. In 2017 there were reports that Sandals Resorts International was eyeing several business strategies including the possible sale of a majority stake in the company.

Aviation experts say a preliminary report into the Feb. 17 Delta Air Lines plane crash at Toronto Pearson airport suggests the aircraft came down at a high speed and touched down hard enough to break its landing gear. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada released its report as it continues to investigate. Some aviation analysts say the data included in the report show the plane approached the runway at a higher speed than normal. A normal rate of descent would be about 100-200 feet per minute. The report indicates the plane touched down at roughly 1,100 feet per minute.

TORONTO The Anguilla Tourist Board (ATB) reinforced its presence in the Canadian market last week, engaging with travel trade professionals and media in Toronto and Montreal.
Chief Marketing Officer Kimberly King and Marketing Officer Sharon Lowe provided industry partners with key updates on Anguilla’s thriving tourism sector and upcoming developments for 2025 and beyond.
During the presentations, King highlighted Anguilla’s ongoing airport redevelopment project, which includes a new passenger terminal set to open this fall and a planned runway extension by 2026-27.
“Developing and strengthening relationships with airline partners ahead of these enhancements is essential,” said King.
“By collaborating on co-op marketing initiatives, we can support and sustain the anticipated growth in passenger demand.”
Anguilla’s ‘Exclusively Yours’ campaign was a major success in 2024, leading to a 25.2% increase in stayover arrivals compared to the previous year.
The island also recorded its highest June and July visitor numbers in the past 30 years, with July 2024 seeing a 20.3% year-over-year increase.
Luxury accommodations on the island are also evolving, with Four Seasons and Belmond Cap Juluca introducing new restaurants and lounges in late 2025.

THE ATB IS DEVELOPING A TRAVEL ADVISOR PROGRAM TO SUPPORT AGENTS
CALGARY Calgary-based Crowfoot Travel Agency has announced new owners at its helm.
Long-time owner Ken Stewart has passed the reins to new owners Kim Paterson and Karina Fong after 25 years of dedicated service. Stewart founded the agency in 1999.
According to Stewart, as travel advisors age, more owners are looking to slow down or retire and sell their agencies. When an owner’s children are uninterested in taking over, finding the right new owners can be challenging.
For Stewart, securing the ideal successors was paramount. “I’ve known Karina for a long time and was impressed by both her and Kim’s dedication to the industry. When they approached me about starting their own venture, I realized they were the perfect fit to carry Crowfoot Travel forward,” said Stewart.
Starting their own agency had always been in the back of Paterson and Fong’s minds, but they wanted to truly understand what that journey would entail before jumping in.
“Ken built an agency known for trust, integrity and expertise, and when the opportunity arose to step into ownership, we knew this was the right next step for us,” said Fong.
“Crowfoot Travel has always been about exceptional service and strong industry partnerships. We’re excited to honour that legacy while introducing new efficiencies, strengthening advisor support, and ensuring travellers continue to receive the best possible experiences.”
TORONTO There’s another delay for the European Travel Information & Authorization System (ETIAS).
A recent post at Europa.eu/etias, the official ETIAS site, says the system won’t launch until later next year: “ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026. No action is required from travellers at this point. The European Union will inform about the specific date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.”
Travelweek first reported on the ETIAS in 2019, two years before it was set to start in 2021. That target came and went, the first of many delays over the years.
The ETIAS won’t launch until at least six months after the EU’s Entry/ Exit System (EES) is up and running. The EES will add another layer of security – and scanners – for nonEU travellers entering what’s known as the Schengen Area (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland).
Meanwhile the ETIAS will require qualifying travellers from some 60 visa-exempt countries, including Canada, to apply for an entry permit in advance of their trip, and pay 7 EUR. It will be valid for 3 years.
The EES is the back-end, and the ETIAS is the front-end, and until the EES launches, the ETIAS is in a holding pattern.

TORONTO Contiki has introduced three new itineraries in Indonesia as demand for Asia continues to surge.
The new trips – ‘Bali Island Hopping’, ‘Komodo & Flores Sail’ and ‘Indonesia Island Hopping’ – follow the success of Contiki’s Philippines Island Hopping adventure. Departures start in July 2025.
According to the youth travel brand, demand for travel to Bali and Asia has increased significantly, with searches for ‘Bali vacations’ up 234% year-over-year and ‘Bali trips’ increasing by 53%.
Interest in Asia travel rebounded strongly in Q3, with a 52% spike in searches, despite the long-haul distance from North America.
Contiki’s own data reflects this trend, with Bali ranking as the mostsearched destination among locations where the brand previously had no active itineraries.
Additionally, 2025 bookings for Asia have already risen nearly 20% compared to 2024.
“Bali has earned its reputation as a hotspot for young travellers, but there’s so much more to discover beyond its nightlife. There are incredible local traditions and cultural experiences that deserve recognition,” says Melissa DaSilva, interim CEO of TTC Tour Brands.

With solo travel surging in popularity, Riverside Luxury Cruises is addressing the needs of independent explorers by eliminating the single supplement on select Harmony Suites aboard the Riverside Mozart and Melody Suites on the Riverside Debussy and Riverside Ravel. This initiative allows solo travellers to embark on European adventures without the additional financial burden typically associated with single occupancy.
A study by travel provider Road Scholar revealed that 85% of their solo travellers are women, 60% of whom are married but choose independent adventures. River cruising, with its immersive experiences and intimate atmosphere, is a perfect fit for those seeking self-discovery and cultural exploration.
“We recognise that solo travel is an important and growing trend, and we at Riverside are committed to creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for all our guests,” said Jennifer Halboth, CEO of Riverside Collection Americas. “By waiving the single supplement on select suites across our entire fleet, we aim to make river cruising more accessible to solo travellers, including women who are looking to explore Europe independently. Whether travelling alone or with a group of friends, we want to ensure that everyone can enjoy the unique experience of river cruising on their own terms.”
Riverside’s luxury vessels foster a sense of community, with a two-to-one guest-to-crew ratio ensuring personalised service. The all-inclusive fares cover gourmet cuisine, premium wines and spirits, complimentary shore excursions, and prepaid gratuities. This structure allows solo travellers to focus on their experience without worrying about unexpected expenses.
Popular itineraries for solo travellers include the Danube Medley, which visits Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. In France, the Rhône Rhapsody appeals to food lovers with stops at Les Halles in Lyon and the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The single supplement waiver applies to Harmony Suites on the 162-guest Riverside Mozart on the Danube River, Melody Suites on the 110-guest Riverside Debussy on the Rhine, Main, Moselle and Danube, and Riverside Ravel sailing the Rhône and Sâone. Availability is limited, so early booking is encouraged.
