TRENDING: MULTIGENERATIONAL TRAVEL

Are you seeing a rise in interest for multigenerational travel? It’s one of the fastest growing travel trends for 2025.

According to a 2023 Family Travel Association (FTA) Annual Family Travel Survey of 3,300 parents and grandparents:

54% of the grandparents surveyed said they plan and organize multigenerational travel experiences

As many as half have taken a multigenerational trip in the past three years

40% plan to take a multigenerational trip in the next three years

A great way to bond as a family

was reported as the top reason why they take multigenerational trips

Collette has been family owned since its founding in 1918. Today, Jaclyn Leibl-Cote is only the 4th CEO in the company’s history, making Collette one of the rare companies to successfully transfer to the 3rd generation of leadership. That’s why we know how important it is to travel as a family.

Land-based safaris are epic but water safaris are “a whole other level”

TORONTO Every once in a while in travel, a ‘soul-changing ‘experience comes along that stays with you forever. For Moira Smith, Goway’s VP Africa and Asia, one of these moments came while sitting in a canoe, meandering down the Zambezi River in Zambia.

“I’ll never forget my first canoeing safari in the Lower Zambezi. It left an indelible mark on my soul and remains one of my favourite places in Africa,” she tells Travelweek.

Although not what initially comes to mind when one thinks of an African safari, water-based safaris are considered one of the best ways to experience authentic Africa and view incredible wildlife in their natural habitats. Picture zebras pausing for a drink on the riverbank, hippos peeking above the surface of the water, and crocodiles lazily swimming downstream, all while seated comfortably – and safely –within the confines of a small boat, pontoon or canoe. In contrast, game drives on land – usually in a 4x4 land cruiser or tour van – can be dusty, bumpy and fast-paced, with the roar of the engine often scaring animals out of sight.

“Viewing wildlife from the water level offers intimate and peaceful encounters. With water safaris, you gain access to areas that vehicles can’t reach, plus they are excellent for photography,” says Smith. “The raw wilderness, sense of adventure and golden afternoon light reflecting

off the water create an African safari experience that’s simply magical.”

Meghan Verbeek, Intrepid Travel’s Wildlife Specialist, is also a big fan of water-based safaris, calling them “a whole other level” compared to land ones.

“Unlike land safaris where long drives and vast landscapes can mean more distant sightings, water safaris provide an intimate, up-close view of nature in its purest form,” she says. Calling out two soul-changing experiences in particular – spotting monkeys mid-leap while speeding up Borneo’s Kinabatangan River, and drifting silently through the Okavango Delta, just inches from wildlife – Verbeek insists: “Experience both and thank me later.”

WHERE TO GO AND WHEN

Of course, water-based safaris aren’t limited to just Africa. Wildlife viewing from a boat or water craft can be enjoyed in countless destinations around the world, from Antarctica and Costa Rica, to the Galapagos, Norway and Australia. But for

Verbeek, she recommends two in particular for their incredible wildlife.

“Borneo’s Kinabatangan River offers one of the highest concentrations of wildlife, where proboscis monkeys, macaques and even wild orangutans and pygmy elephants can be spotted,” she tells Travelweek. “Meanwhile, Africa’s Chobe National Park boasts the largest elephant population on the continent, making it a prime destination for water safaris.”

As for when to go on a waterbased safari, it will depend on the destination. Verbeek’s biggest tip is to research local weather and what to expect during the different seasons.

“Typically, during rainy season, most animals will be harder to spot as they take shelter and move away from large water sources,” she says.

If you were to ask Goway’s Smith when to go on a water-based safari, she’d tell you that there’s no bad time, just “different” times.

“For example,” she says, “in the dry season in Southern Africa, which runs from May to October, lower water levels in some areas make wildlife

Canoeing in the Lower Zambezi

easier to spot along riverbanks. Meanwhile, the green season from November to April is perfect for ‘mokoro’ (traditional dug-out canoe) safaris as water levels are higher and there are abundant opportunities for bird watching. Plus, this period often has better value with lower rates.”

For year-round game viewing, Smith also recommends the Kazinga Channel in Uganda, known for having one of the world’s largest concentrations of hippos and countless Nile crocodiles.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A WATER-BASED SAFARI

No two safaris are the same, which is why both Smith and Verbeek recommend doing ample research to find one that includes suitable accommodations and water/land transport for each comfort level. As Smith notes, some guests may feel uneasy canoeing past hippos and crocodiles, which is why Goway offers a pontoon alternative for greater comfort and stability.

When booking with Intrepid, Verbeek says transport varies from experience to experience. For example, in Borneo, guests will board a simple wooden speedboat to sail into the forest, whereas in the Okavango Delta they will travel in a mokoro for a water-level exploration of the area. A traditional flat-bottom barge is used to sail the waterways of Madagascar, while a solar electric boat with seating along the edges

affords ample viewing of crocodiles and birds in Australia.

As for what wildlife to expect while on a water-based safari, Verbeek says the sky’s the limit – literally.

“In Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park, you can see over 300 bird species, turtles, otters and manatee. When you’re in Botswana’s Chobe National Park, expect to see elephants, antelope and warthogs. South Africa’s St Lucia Estuary is amazing for hippos, while in Australia’s Daintree Rainforest, you’ll see crocodiles, birdlife, snakes, frogs and beautiful fish,” she says. “Exploring these landscapes from the water provides a unique and immersive way to witness nature at its most raw and breathtaking.”

WHAT TO BOOK

If Africa is top of mind, Goway offers a wide selection of customizable itineraries that combine land-based safaris with walking- and water-based ones. Itineraries include mokoro experiences in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, canoeing in the Mana Pools of Lower Zambezi, sunset cruises on the Chobe River, as well as small boat and tender excursions on Lake Kariba, located along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Smith recommends Goway’s nine-day ‘Best of Zambia: Livingstone, South Luangwa & The Lower Zambezi,’ which includes river canoeing as well as visits to Victoria Falls and Kawaza Village and stays at Luangwe River Camp and Tongabezi Safari Lodge. For an unforgettable family safari

complete with a mokoro experience in the Okavango Delta, Smith suggests the nine-day ‘Ultimate Botswana Family Safari’ featuring once-in-alifetime highlights like the zebra migration in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and safari game drives in Moremi and the Savute areas.

Equally diverse is Intrepid’s portfolio, featuring water-based safaris in Borneo, Kenya, Botswana, Costa Rica, South Africa, Madagascar and Australia. Verbeek says Intrepid’s 10day ‘Classic Borneo’ is a must-book for its cruise along the Kinabatangan River, a protected forest reserve and home to some of Borneo’s highest concentrations of wildlife. “Wild elephants seldom reveal themselves but crocodiles, wild orangutans and kingfishers are more easily seen, as well as proboscis monkeys and long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques,” she says.

In Africa, Verbeek recommends Intrepid’s nine-day ‘Botswana Highlights,’ which includes a river cruise in Chobe National Park, home of the largest population of elephants in the continent. “A river cruise here will get travellers up close to large families of elephants crossing the banks, drinking and playing in the water. It’s also ideal for spotting bird life such as saddle-billed storks, malachite kingfishers, fish eagles and beautiful bee-eaters,” she says.

G Adventures hosts agent appreciation event with game-themed ‘G’evening with Friends’

TORONTO Travel community and media partners took a break to shake off the cold and snow last week to attend the G Adventures game-themed event, ‘G’evening with Friends,’ held at the Storys Building in downtown Toronto.

With a ‘sea of purple’ dress code request, it was clear that guests were in for a fun-filled night in true G style.

The G Adventure team was easily visible in their shiny purple sequined jackets. The purple-inspired gin cocktails, trivia games and a firebreathing saxophone player, Andre, enhanced the evening’s theme –that and the promise of ‘no long speeches’ this year.

“We love our travel agents,” said David Green, VP Customer and Sales Operations & Managing Director Canada, as he welcomed attendees. “Thank you to our travel agent community. As you know, we cannot do what we do without you.”

On that note, he added: “We’re a Canadian company, and we’ve always been a brand that associates itself with travel agents.”

These days the community tourism and small group travel pioneer offers 12 travel styles and 850 trips worldwide, curated to give travellers “unique and immersive experiences,” said Green.

On hand to celebrate the agent appreciation evening were topranked destination partners including PromPeru, ProColombia, Visit Costa

Rica, Visit Jordan Tourism, Tourism Ireland and Cuba Tourist Board.

“With all our new trips and travel styles, we’re working with our agents to keep them up-to-date with everything new. There is a high demand for community-based travel, with Canadians seeking new and alternative experiences,” said Green.

“When they book through G Adventures, they aren’t just supporting community tourism in the destination their customers visit; they are supporting a Canadian business founded in Canada 35 years ago, with our best years ahead of us, thanks to our travel agent community,” he added.

This year is the most significant product launch in G Adventures history, with over 200 new trips for 2025.

Many of these new trips focus on helping travellers explore new regions of destinations, with fewer tourists and more significant interaction with local communities.

But the evening was not just about community celebration. The event also focused on giving back and supporting the Planeterra Foundation through a fundraising component. G team members were on hand to assist with raffle tickets sold throughout the evening, collectively raising over $3,610.

The event wrapped up with raffle trip giveaways and prizes for the trivia winners. One particularly lucky travel advisor, Orangeville, ON-based Beverly Edgar from The Travel Agent Next Door, doubled her wins with a trip to Peru and also securing a spot at the GX summit in Jordan this September.

Goway’s Egypt bookings up 250%: “It’s

clear that

confidence

is

being restored”

TORONTO Rising tensions anywhere in the world almost always impact neighbour countries, a frustrating state of affairs for anyone selling travel.

In the case of Egypt, many would-be visitors have shied away ever since conflict broke out next door.

Now that tensions are easing and there’s a real possibility of a return to peaceful times, travellers are coming back to Egypt, in droves. For Goway, bookings for Egypt – from November 2024 to January 2025 – have ramped up an incredible 250% year over

year, says Moira Smith, Goway’s VP Africa & Middle East.

“Travellers are big on Egypt once again. Travellers often had misconceptions about the safety of Egypt throughout the Isreal Gaza conflict, and it is clear that confidence is being restored,” she tells Travelweek.

Read on for more of our Q&A with Smith.

Egypt has made a spectacular comeback for Goway. Can you tell us more?

perceptions and positive news such as the ceasefire.”

Are easing tensions in the Middle East a big reason why Egypt is trending again?

“Easing tensions in the Middle East, particularly the ceasefire, have played a significant role in boosting Egypt’s appeal as a travel destination.

“While Egypt has seen a steady demand despite regional instability, other destinations like Dubai have also shown resilience and maintained strong tourism numbers, in fact right through the Middle East conflict. We are seeing interest in Jordan rising but not at the same rate as Egypt. Interesting to note that our Morocco bookings, whilst strictly speaking not the Middle East, are up 45% over the same period last year.”

Starting in fall 2023 and continuing through much of 2024, travel visas for Egypt no doubt impacted demand. Where do things stand now?

WE ARE CONVERTING AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE.

“What is interesting to note is that leads over the same period are up 60%, whereas bookings are up 250%. We are converting at a much higher rate and I think that is reflecting increased consumer confidence in travelling to Egypt, possibly due to improved safety

“The good news is that visas for Canadians can be obtained online pre-departure, or on arrival at Cairo for a cost of US$25. In fact, it’s really easy for our passengers to get their visa on arrival as all our passengers are met before immigration and baggage collection, and our on-theground team facilitate all aspects of arrival including obtaining the visa.”

Sunwing Vacations will protect commission on all cancelled Sunwing flights Feb. 17

- 21

TORONTO Sunwing Vacations will protect travel advisor commissions on all Sunwing Airlines cancelled flights scheduled to depart Feb. 17 - Feb. 21.

Travelweek heard from travel advisors concerned about commission protection in the wake of Sunwing’s cancellations at Toronto Pearson Airport earlier this month.

Sunwing’s Deana Murphy, VP, Trade Sales & Business Development, has now issued a letter to Sunwing’s valued travel advisor partners, read on for more:

“This past week has brought tremendous operational challenges for air carriers across the country, including Sunwing Airlines. It began with the extreme winter weather events experienced in cities across Canada which broadly affected airport operations, both locally and in destination, and air carriers’ flight plans.

“The significant weather disruptions also severely limited Sunwing Airlines’ ability to reposition aircraft and crew to other airports to help alleviate the backlog in flights, and adversely limited the ability to reprotect passengers on alternate carriers given widespread flight cancellations.

“Further operational complexities were brought on due to the temporary closure of Toronto Pearson International Airport on February 17, 2025 due to a runway incident, in which several air carriers were required to divert to other

eastern Canada gateways during this time, followed by the subsequent and continued closure of two runways at Toronto Pearson.

“The safety and comfort of our travellers is imperative, so to prioritize the safe return of our mutual customers currently delayed in multiple destinations down south, Sunwing Airlines made the difficult but essential decision to cancel flights from several gateways to redirect their resources to focus on bringing them home as quickly and safely as possible.

“While we never want to disrupt our customers’ vacation plans, ensuring those currently in destination have proper accommodation and arrive home safely takes precedence.

“We understand the impact of these cancellations on our customers but also recognize these circumstances have led to our travel advisors stepping in to support them day and night – and we are sincerely grateful.

“Sunwing Vacations will be protecting travel advisor commissions on all Sunwing Airlines cancelled flights scheduled to depart between February 17th and February 21st.

“The travel advisor community is essential to our success in making vacation dreams come true for our customers. At Sunwing Vacations, we know how important our customers’ vacations are to them, and the invaluable role their travel advisors play. We want to express our deepest apologies for the inconvenience these cancellations have caused, and sincerely thank our valued travel advisors for the graciousness and support they’ve shown during this challenging time.”

The airline also achieved record annual revenues in 2024 of $22.3 billion on a 5% increase in capacity over 2023.

“We executed our plan, making adjustments where necessary, achieving nearly $3.6 billion in annual adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow of $1.3 billion. We also bought back for cancellation over 20 million shares in 2024 and over 15 million more in early 2025, completing the normal course issuer bid program we announced in November. TCD reveals theme and keynote speaker for annual conferences

MONTREAL Transat Distribution

Canada (TDC) is counting down the days until its annual conferences, which promise to deliver plenty of ‘star power.’

The events will take place on Sept. 20 and 21 in the Greater Toronto Area, following the edition scheduled for Sept. 13 and 14 at the Saint-Hyacinthe Convention Centre.

This year’s theme, “Star Power: Lighting the Way in a Sky of Choices,” highlights the expertise and guidance travel professionals provide to their clients.

“This year, we are taking the powerful symbol of the star to new heights,” said Karine Gagnon, General Manager of TDC. “Our travel professionals embody this symbol, acting as guiding stars for their clients, helping them navigate a vast sky of choices with expertise and a touch of inspiration.”

She added, “This theme resonates deeply with us, as the star has always been part of TDC’s DNA through our affiliation with Transat. Our annual conferences are the ultimate opportunity for members of our network to access resources that help them grow both professionally and personally while strengthening their businesses in an ever-expanding sky of choices.”

NASA ENGINEER FARAH ALIBAY TO TAKE THE STAGE

A highlight of the conference will be a one-on-one conversation between Karine Gagnon and NASA engineer Farah Alibay, who will

share her inspiring journey of achieving her dream job.

Born in Montreal to parents originally from Madagascar, Alibay grew up in a small town north of the city before studying at Cambridge University in the UK and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. She joined NASA in 2014 and became widely recognized in 2022 for her pivotal role in deploying the Perseverance rover on Mars.

ENGAGING WORKSHOPS AND INDUSTRY SUPPORT

The conference will feature additional speakers and workshops designed to provide valuable insights and tools for TDC members. Preferred partners will also play a key role, offering network members direct access to product specialists.

“Our partners contribute in so many ways—most notably through their in-person presence, which allows our members to engage with them directly, as well as through their content contributions that support business development,” said Gagnon. “Hosting an event of this scale without the support of Transat – by far our most important business partner – would be unthinkable. The bond we share is essential.”
