FITUR’s Significance and Its Role in the Progress of Travel The Managing Director of the Fair discusses its achievements and advances, and why it’s such a vital stop for industry professionals.

T

RAVEL WORLD NEWS: FITUR is celebrating its 31st edition. How does such a longstanding event manage to maintain participants’ interest year after year? ANA LARRAÑAGA: We are acutely aware of our role as a resource in the industry and, in light of this, we know we have to adapt to market trends, stay up on changes, and respond to new needs that the industry may face. Guided by this dedication to service, we have built a flexible Fair which is revamped each year. Thus, for our next one, to be held between January 19 and 23, 2011, among other iniANA LARRAÑAGA tiatives we will create, in collaboration with the Madrid Tourist Board, a new exhibition area dedicated to LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) tourism options. This is one of the segments with the most potential for development in recent years, and we have renewed the FITUR Congresos format, now called FITUR Meetings & Events, for it to address new demands in this area. In addition, we will strengthen our presence on social networks, inviting all those involved in the Fair to intensify their participation and, with regards to the public, will offer various activities, such as cultural workshops, with the same intention of involving them more in the event, making their presence at FITUR more proactive. In the same spirit of responding to the demands of the industry, we are renewing efforts undertaken in the last edition, and we have had an extraordinary response. We will once again feature the Inbound Spain area, which brings together national inbound companies. Also, to contribute to developing markets Investour will be held, which we host along with Casa África and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), on this occasion stressing the presence of the member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which will present tourism projects in these areas to potential Spanish investors. Moreover, at this time it is essential to pay particular attention to sustainability in the industry. Thus, for the second consecutive year we will organize FITUR Green along with the World Tourism Organization, which was well received in its first edition. In short, we are talking about a living and dy4 • DECEMBER 2010

namic fair which is adapting to the market today, to its needs and requirements. TWN: We have gone through a very difficult economic situation, but it appears that recovery is on the horizon. What is FITUR’s role in this environment? AL: It is probably now, more than ever, when the Fair can play its role best as a marketing tool. It is true that the WTO estimates industry growth this year of between three- and fourpercent worldwide, increases that have already begun to show up in recent months. As we look forward to this recovery companies have to be positioned and enhance their brand images in order to be visible before the demand that is bound to rise. FITUR is the ideal place to carry out these actions because in five days, and in one place, the key players involved in the industry converge, and one can introduce products and innovations both to professionals and to end users. These actions are bolstered by the extraordinary media coverage of the Fair, which provides visibility for many options. The presence of more than 11,000 participating companies from 170 countries and regions, along with about 200,000 visitors to the travel fair, makes for a venue offering one of the most varied and rich selections in the tourist industry, making FITUR an event that generates synergies, multiplying contacts and commercial transactions. TWN: With regard to the question of technology, it seems that one of the goals this year is to strengthen its presence on social networks. AL: This is one of the efforts that is a result of our desire to adapt to the reality within the sector and, in general, to society. The tourism industry has been one of those which has accepted new technologies best and fastest, and FITUR has not remained immune to this trend. It is now our goal for social networks to serve to enhance interactions between all of us at FITUR, and to create communication channels for everyone to use. To this end we have created a blog on the FITUR website, which we hope will become a real tool to spread news about the next Fair in a flexible and dynamic way. This kind of communication will be further enhanced by Twitter, which will provide real-time alerts to those interested in the latest developments, and will respond to all the needs of exhibitors and visitors. Meanwhile, our LinkedIn group is intended as a forum to share knowledge and to increase the competitiveness of domestic tourism, in addition to collecting all the suggestions of FITUR participants, essential to ensure the event’s competitive edge. And, with the public visiting us in www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

INDUSTRY EVENTS mind, our Facebook page will continue to be the place on the Web for them to prepare their itineraries through the halls and, once at the Fair, to share their experiences and discoveries, which may be transmitted in photographs and videos on Flickr and YouTube. These steps were preceded by the adoption of new technologies in other areas of the Fair, for example, in the services we provide to our exhibitors, most of which can be arranged on-line, for greater convenience and to expedite these processes. In addition, with professionals in mind, we will hold the fifth edition of Fiturtech, which will once again show them how the latest technologies can help them in their daily work. TWN: As noted earlier, you have altered the format of the FITUR section dedicated to business tourism. What were these changes a response to? AL: Business tourism is a market characterized by its great dynamism and an excellent potential for development around the world. The changes made were designed to adjust and universalize the brand for all the segments involved in business tourism, meetings, incentives, conferences and events, so FITUR Congresses has been redubbed FITUR Meetings and Events, with the caption Business Tourism Fair. Also, we have tried to give priority to the quality of buyers, rather than quantity. To this end, an even more demanding selection of the professionals who attend will be made, which will feature profiles representing all the aforementioned segments. As a result of this prioritization of quality over quantity, the workshop will be concentrated in a single day, on January 18, optimizing resources. TWN: Finally, what would you say to those professionals who are hesitating about attending the 2011 edition of the Fair? AL: Despite the infinite channels of communication that have been developed in recent years, many of them provided by new technologies, human contact and meetings remains a fundamental factor when it comes to doing business. Among other benefits, FITUR offers added value to its participants by providing a forum for these meetings, where agreements and trust are forged, and does so in an environment that provides the opportunity to rub shoulders with key players in the sector– those responsible for supply and demand, government officials, suppliers, trainers, distributors, end users…everyone. Anyone who wants to boost his business cannot afford to miss out on this opportunity to be present at this essential instrument to promote his projects and multiply his contacts, strategies and partnerships for the rest of the year. One cannot pass up the FITUR opportunity, in just five days and in one place allowing one face-to-face contact with the entire tourism value chain and the chance to build on the extraordinary schedule of events that the Fair offers.

INDUSTRY EVENTS DISCOVER AMERICA AT UPCOMING MITT— RUSSIA’S #1 TRAVEL EXHIBITION MITT 2010 brought together more than 3,000 exhibiting companies from 185 countries and nearly 80,000 visitors—74 percent of them were travel professionals, affirming it the key meeting place for the Russian travel and tourism industry. Participants increase awareness of the destination, gain a real feel for the Russian travel market and are able to gauge demand for their services. Newly launched medical tourism proved hugely successful at this year’s show and included representation from some of the world’s best clinics and medical centers in Armenia, Austria, China, Germany, Israel, Jordan, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and, of course, Russia. Demand for medical tourism in Russia appears to be far outweighing supply, so this new travel sector looks poised for massive growth. As the demand for travel services in Russia grows and their traveler spending increases, the MITT’s popularity has grown apace. The event welcomes both trade and consumer visitors, with specific ‘trade only’ days. Next year the event will take place March 16–19 in Moscow. The Discover America Pavilion is a popular feature at MITT. The one-stop shop offers U.S. exhibitors space only or cost-effective, turnkey booth space options, complete with setup, utilities, a U.S.A. hospitality/meeting lounge and onsite support staff. All alternatives include exhibit space rental, daily cleaning, access to all

Discover America Pavilion services and amenities. Participation in branded U.S. pavilions provides U.S. travel and tourism destinations and organizations with an in-country opportunity to interact face-to-face with their primary buyers through cost-effective participation alternatives. The Discover America brand serves as a unifying element—it positions and promotes the United States, and serves as a quality standard for representing U.S. travel and tourism interests abroad. Outbound travel from Russia is up 44 percent year on year, with travel to the U.S. up 27 percent. The Russian economy as a whole increased 7.5 percent in the first quarter of 2010 with an estimated eight percent in the second. Disposable income has increased 4.2 perent, and Russian tourists are among the biggest spenders in many areas. B-FOR International, b-for@exhibitpro.com, www.discoveramericapavilion.com

INDIA IS GEARING UP FOR PTM2011 IN NEW DELHI The final day of the three-day PATA Travel Mart 2010 (PTM2010) in September saw international buyers, sellers and media delegates gather at the dinner reception hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Rajen Habib Khwaja, Secretary of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, welcomed delegates to attend PATA Travel Mart 2011, New Delhi, India. Hiran Cooray, PATA Chairman, commented, “The PATA Travel Mart 2011 in New Delhi is one of the most exciting events and activities planned to roll out next year. We have a very special relationship with India, which is a rapidly emerging market, and we are delighted they are hosts for the PTM2011.” Said Arjun Sharma, Managing Director, Le Passage to India. “The travel fraternity in India is excited that PATA has chosen New Delhi as the venue for PTM2011. With the explosive outbound numbers emanating from our country, it is not uncommon for increased and newer destinations to woo the Indian traveler.” Ashok Kapur, CEO, Khiri DMC, said, “India is a fantastic choice as it is a rapidly emerging destination and market. As a travel specialist focusing on Thailand and Indochina, Khiri Travel will continue to invest strongly in the Indian outbound market. We see huge potential there for sectors such as leisure, MICE, honeymoon and top-end incentive trips.” Said Nicoline Dolman, Director of Sales and Marketing, Bali Dynasty Resort, “We will definitely participate in PTM in India. The Indian family market has a huge potential for the travel and tourism of Bali. Balinese cultures and religion are the main attractions for the Indian market.” Ashwani Gupta, Managing Director, Dove Travels, India, and a first-time attendant at PTM, remarked that “PATA Travel Mart is world-famous for its travel trade networking opportunities and also for its high level of organization.” Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), www.pata.org www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

INDUSTRY EVENTS ITTFA WELCOMES PER MAGNUSSON, RECENTLY APPOINTED EXHIBITION MANAGER AT TUR TUR, Scandinavia’s leading travel trade event, welcomed a new Exhibition Manager earlier in the year, when the show’s long-standing manager, Johan F Lundberg, moved on. Per Magnusson, originally a business lawyer, joined TUR in January 2008, following six years as a project manager at the Swedish Fair and Congress Centre in Gothenburg. He is married with two chilPER MAGNUSSON dren and enjoys the travel business that initially lured him to Svenska Massen. Magnusson says what he enjoys most about his new role is the opportunity to collaborate with different kinds of companies and organizations, to invent new ways of improving the fair for either the trade visitor, the exhibitors or the public. “Since I started, we have developed 10–15 new things for TUR. For example, we have opened up a unique site where we place special fair offers with great prices from the exhibitors, and the public can view them on the Internet but they can only buy them at the fair. We have developed an interactive area on the exhibition floor where people with specialist knowledge about a destination can wear a badge encouraging people to ask questions about this particular place or theme. We have also started up two new Facebook groups—each with a specific focus, developing new business and creating a win-win situation.” Magnusson hopes to solidify TUR as the most important tourism fair in the Nordic region and to develop more tools for exhibitors and visitors to assist in creating more business. As TUR is a member of ITTFA (International Tourism Trade Fairs Association), he expects to continue and build on the show’s relationship and participation with the Association. Welcome To Poland – A Country Rich in Cultural Treasures and UNESCO World Heritage Sites ANN CHARLES POLISH NATIONAL TOURIST OFFICE NORTH AMERICA

N

o doubt, the Old Town of Warsaw on UNESCO’s World Heritage List attracts curious tourists, history buffs and music lovers. At the same time, the Old Town continues to reflect the rich, cultural heritage of a city that was destroyed three times during World War II , yet was determined to restore its grandeur and greatness. Founded in the thirteenth century, and now restored to its original glory, travel enthusiasts continue to flock to this historic capital with its monument to the Warsaw Mermaid, the city’s guardian, The Royal Castle, home of princes and the seat of the king, and the towering Column of King Zygmunt III Waza. Besides these key attractions, culturally-minded travellers won’t want to miss the Wilanow Palace, an outstanding example of European Baroque architecture, the Fryderyk Chopin Museum, with its vast collection of memorabilia and live con12 • DECEMBER 2010

certs, and the Warsaw Rising Museum which depicts the city’s historic struggle. Poland, the fifth largest country in Europe, is a fascinating mix of castles, culture, spas, history, and spectacular scenery. As the Polish Tourist Organization reminds us, “Poland with broad access to the Baltic Sea, is situated in the middle of the European continent on the crossroads between West and East”. To get a quick overview of Warsaw within just two hours, suggest your clients tour the city aboard a double decker bus to see the most interesting monuments, museums, churches, cemeteries, palaces, and Jewish historical sights. On audio tours, translations are offered in sixteen different languages, including English. For smaller groups, there are also mini-vans that will take visitors around the city led by highly experienced Englishspeaking tour guides with in-depth knowledge of Poland’s www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

EUROPE cultural heritage. The background information provided by a former teacher turned tour guide during the “Meet Poland 2010” events, provided a crash course on the country’s impressive history. As a result, the life of the Polish-born Pope John Paul II, Jewish,Ghettos, Lech Walesa’s Solidarity Movement and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin in 2010, famous Polish composer, came alive in a matter of minutes. Visits to Chopin’s birth place and childhood home in Mazovia (www.mazovia.pl) Sochaczen Mazonsze Chopina, outside of Warsaw, are definitely worthwhile. Here’s where visitors can actually enjoy live performances by young musicians studying at the school, and just like Chopin, would be inspired by the colorful folk dancing and singing from the region. For 50 years, the regional song dance group “Sanniki” has been active in the life of the community. What kind of tours can you offer your clients? New York City’s American Travel Abroad which “promises to turn dreams into reality,” offers a wide variety of tour packages to Poland and beyond.” Pearls of Poland” is an all-time favorite. In addition, ask about tour extensions to the Medieval capitals of Tallinn, Estonia, Riga, Latvia and Vilnius, Lithuania. LOT Polish Airlines has direct flights from New York’s JFK Airport to Warsaw, Poland. Great tasting food is an instant way for a traveller to get a favourable impression of Poland.. For example, a gala dinner at the Novotel Warzawa Airport featured Polish trio: roe pate, marinated pork knuckle with boletus, smoked duck and Zubrowskie vodka, forest mushroom soup, roasted duck, confit with pears and cranberries, or Pikeperch fillet with fried leeks and spinach, and plum mousse with gingerbread on honey-rum sauce. Absolutely delicious. Stealing the spotlight when it comes to a spectacular show and extraordinary cuisine, is the gala show at the Murzurkas Hotel & Conference Center, a short distance from Central Warsaw. Costumed women on stilts greet you as you walk in the door, and the sights and sounds of the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil make an impact. The show, itself, is unforgettable and makes you realize that there’s a reason why the name Mazurkas shows up everywhere in Poland, whether in connection with their hotel and conference center, travel agencies, catering services, and other types of businesses. The name Mazurkas is magic. For more adventuresome travellers, and those who enjoy unexpected surprises, be sure to include Lodz, the youngest city of Poland, just outside Warsaw on your client’s itinerary. Called a city of art nouveau and 19th century architecture, it is proud of its Museum of Cinematography, and for having the longest shopping street in Europe. Hotel Lodz, a former textile mill, combines historic industrial design with the most modern innovations. The Sky Spa with its rooftop pool, sauna, gym, wellness bar, and massage treatments, will delight any traveller who needs to relax his or her body, mind and soul, while discovering a new destination. However, in the end, it’s the friendly and surprisingly different kinds of people that you remember on a tour of Poland who encourage you in words or without to visit this country again. Particularly memorable was our gracious young host, Tomasz Tomaszenski of the Grand Hotel, the oldest hotel in Lodz, with a long tradition in the art of hospitality. Now that you know more about the Old Town of Warsaw, and the surrounding areas of Lodz, don’t stop there. There are several other world class sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List that your clients may want to visit on a trip to Poland. They include the historic centre of Cracow, a former royal capital, Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, and the world famous Wieliczka Salt Mine, among others.

ST. MAARTEN OFFICIAL WEBSITE CHANGES FROM ST-MAARTEN.COM TO VACATIONSTMAARTEN.COM St. Maarten, one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Caribbean, has long been promoted by a number of websites that have used or shared a variation of the country’s name, but the tourist interests represented by the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau has one website address under the domain VacationStMaarten.com. The new website was launched in November 2009 as part of the island’s rebranding. The St. Maarten Tourist Bureau is alerting both the media and all other directories listing Caribbean boards of tourism to update all databases that may have listings still directing traffic to the former official St. Maarten website, St-Maarten.com, to direct to the current official site for the Caribbean destination at VacationStMaarten.com. The Bureau has no direct affiliation with st-maarten.com or any other website aside from the official domain posing as a direct information portal for the Caribbean Island. “We are pleased that people have chosen to promote St. Maarten tourism, but we are also concerned that travel professionals and consumers will be confused and misled by special private interests and want to make sure that everyone recognizes the official website of the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau is www.VacationStMaarten.com,” said Regina LaBega, Director of Tourism for St. Maarten. CARIBBEAN FIFTH NIGHT FREE IN JANUARY AT GRAND CASE BEACH CLUB

As a special incentive for travelers to visit the Grand Case Beach Club in January, the resort is offering the fifth night free for trips started and completed between January 2 and 31, 2011. The special promotion, which translates into a 20-percent room discount for guests staying a minimum of five nights, applies to accommodations in all categories. It may not be used in conjunction with any other promotion at the oceanfront resort, located adjacent to Grand Case village, the culinary capital of St. Martin. Another incentive includes continental breakfast daily and use of the tennis court, fitness center, swimming pool and all non-motorized water sports for the duration of the stay. There is also an island boutique, water sports center, and a car rental facility. General Manager Steve Wright says it is the resort’s policy to have “something new” each year. This year saw the completion of a $1.8-million renovation program. Bathrooms feature mahogany countertops, mirrors, indirect lighting, commodes and pocket doors in most of them. Every unit now has a new mattress and colorful fabrics on the furnishings. The Sunset Cafe, described as “better than ever” by Wright, combines ocean view with signature dishes like escargot topped with bleu cheese, red snapper en papillote and rack of lamb oven-roasted in a clay pot with smoked thyme. Lobsters are fresh, thanks to a recently installed lobster tank. Special value entrees are offered daily, along with a children’s menu, and carry-out or room service. The Sunset Cafe, open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Happy Hour, is now connected to the Boardwalk, where guests are frequently seen relaxing on chaises, sipping cocktails and watching the fish, swimmers and sailboats. The Boardwalk is wrapped around the hill overlooking the ocean and beach. Grand Case Beach Club has received many awards and citations for outstanding hospitality and service. Readers of Caribbean Travel & Life Magazine named it one of the best medium-size resorts in the Caribbean. Participants in Apple Vacations’ tours have been equally enthusiastic as have those commenting through TripAdvisor. Expedia has again named the resort to its Insiders Select List. MEXICO

Isla Mujeres—Where the Sun Rises on Mexico Beachfront studios, lovely Mexican hotels, homes surrounded by tropical gardens… Mornings in Mexico knows a wide variety of very special properties.

T

he charm and beauty of Isla Mujeres far exceed its size: the island is only five miles long and a half mile wide at its widest. La Isla, as it’s called, attracted visitors world over, years before Cancun was developed, visitors looking for a unique, truly Mexican experience. Just six miles across the Bay of Mujeres from Cancun, the island offers white sand beaches lined with palm trees; snorkeling and scuba diving to a myriad of reefs; accommodations to suit all ages and all budgets, and restaurants to delight all tastes. Isla Mujeres is unique among the Caribbean islands for its ambience and its residents descended from the ancient Maya. Most live on fishing, and love to share their life with visitors. Here civilization as defined seems thousands of miles away. Isla Mujeres was discovered in 1517 by the Spanish explorer Francisco Hernandez de Cordova, who found temples and statues devoted to the Mayan goddess of fertility, Ixchel. Later La Isla became a haven for pirates who left their women on the island for “safekeeping,” providing an alternative theory about the how the island became know as Isla Mujeres (Island of the Women). In 1850 a village was formed and the island became a paradise for fishermen whose descendants still inhabit it. Visitors can be as active as they wish, or do nothing more than relax and enjoy the island’s beauty. The North Beach has a variety of restaurants with attentive waiters to bring food and drink to lounge chairs at water’s edge. Water toys, kayaks and snorkeling gear are available for rental. The island has several PADI-certified dive shops, and reefs with schools of colorful fish ring the island, providing incomparable snorkeling. Garrafon Park has a reef that can be reached from land and visitors can swim and interact with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery. Hacienda Mundaca, the home of the pirate and slave trader Fermin Mundaca, has extensive tropical gardens and a small zoo. A turtle farm protects eggs and the newly hatched until each year schoolchildren release them into the sea. Massage and spa treatments, Spanish lessons, fishing and shopping round out activities. Trips to Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary for more than 70 species, can be reached in a day trip by boat. From June to September, the island offers a unique experience—swimming and snorkeling with peaceful whale sharks, the largest fish on earth, as they migrate close to the island. Hotels, apartments and homes available for rental range from shared rooms in one of the several hostels to deluxe accommodations with private pool and spa services. Many visitors prefer the newer, deluxe condos on the North Beach while others like to stay in the colonias, the Mexican neighborhoods midway on the island, where they can experience typical island life.

22 • DECEMBER 2010

Isla Mujeres (Island of the Women), was discovered in 1517.

Isla Mujeres offers a wide variety of restaurants, from “comida economicas”—small restaurants that serve traditional Mayan, Yucatecan and Mexican dishes for less than $5, to beachfront places where visitors can enjoy dining with toes in the sand, to five-star dining with spectacular views and gourmet food to match. Since the island is sister to the island of Cuba, that influence is present at many restaurants; other cuisines include Thai, sushi, northern and southern Italian and Caribbean barbecue and chicken dishes. Most restaurants are in the downtown/North Beach area but more and more are opening in the colonias and attracting visitors with their specialties. Travelers can rent a golf cart to leisurely tour the island for about $50 a day or go a bit faster on a motor scooter for $20–$25 a day. Many choose to explore by bicycle, available for rental at $10 a day, or by foot—the island is so small, distances can be covered quickly. Taxis, the main form of transportation, are very inexpensive. Also, a bus goes from the downtown area to mid-island every half hour. Isla Mujeres was a center for Mayan women in the ancient world—a place where they came to pray to the goddess Ixchel for fertility. For years a temple dedicated to Ixchel stood at the south end of the island. Trips to more extensive Mayan archeological sites can be done in a day: to Tulum, a ceremonial center to the south, and to Chichen Itza, where three ancient cultures—the Olmec, the Maya and the Toltec—once reigned. Isla Mujeres is easily reached from Cancun International Airport. Vans and buses go to Puero Juarez, the mainland port for “people” ferries to the island that leave every half hour from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and take 15 minutes to reach La Isla. A car ferry operates five times each day from Punta Sam, about two miles north of Puerto Juarez on the same road.

Guatemala’s 2010 CATM Ignites Continued Regional Growth L I S B E T H H O LT LISBETH HOLT

G

uatemala played host to the seventh Central American Travel Market (CATM) held in the enchanting colonial city of Antigua, October 18 – 20, 2010, at the fabled Casa Santo Domingo (www.casasantodomingo.com.gt) …perhaps the most exquisite setting on earth. The international trade fair brought together the Central American tourism sector including tourism boards, tour operators, hoteliers, and airlines with hundreds of travel professionals and media from around the globe to promote regional growth. An annual event, a different Central American country hosts the fair each year showcasing the myriad facets of this magical isthmus, the seven stunning sister nations of Central America: Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Pre-tours in the host country precede the fair and post-tours in one of the other Central American countries follow. “Centro America: tan pequena…tan grande…” (Central America, so small, so big) This year, Guatemala pulled out all the stops for a sensational success. Opening ceremonies were held in the Plaza Atrio with special invitee, President Alvaro Colom Caballeros. A Traditions and Legends Cultural Night, Ruta del Peregrino (“The Pilgrim’s Route”) followed, which led fairgoers through Antigua’s ancient cobblestone streets to the Convento La Merced with folkloric music, dances and drama. Spectacular Santo Domingo del Cerro feted a gala dinner “Guatemala Moderna” and the Fiesta CATM 2011 for Panama was celebrated in exuberant fashion at the Jardin Real de Santiago. What is clearly evident: one need venture no farther than Central America to experience soul-stirring adventures of a lifetime. Roberto Robles, Director of INGUAT the Guatemala Tourism Board informed attendees that “Guatemala has recently become one of the main emerging markets in Latin America attracting investors from all over the world. The tourism sector is the first source of income for the country’s foreign exchange.” Guatemala, “the heart of the Mayan world”, enchants visitors with its dazzling natural beauty, its fascinating cities, its fabulous archaeological sites and incredible history, intertwined in radiant hues and amazing designs on the loom of destiny. This year, a multi-pronged marketing strategy included such diverse topics as Maya cosmovision and the expanding health and medical tourism market. Guatemala’s greatest treasure? Surely the gracious Guatemalans themselves! Visitors are welcomed with heartwarming hospitality. The spectacular highlands, Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Tikal, are among the most-visited regions. Maya Caribbean reveals enchanting treasures of its own. For adventure with a capital “A”, travelers drive east from the capital towards Lake Izabal, the country’s largest lake with a colorful history of intrigue and piracy. First, a stop at the archaeological site of Quirigua with its sky-high stelae, one measuring over thirty-three feet. Visiting El Castillo de San Felipe is a rush. Accommodations nearby include Nana Juana Hotel & Marina (www.hotelmarinananajuana.com) which now boasts fabulous bamboo rooms and “flagship” suites overlooking the Rio Dulce. Boating to Livingston, a Garifuna village on the Caribbean Sea through canyons of splendor adds another wildly exotic twist. A tiny slice of Guatemala is wedged here between Belize and Honduras. When traveling north towards Flores, the challenging “skyway” at Ixpanpajul (www.ixpanpajul.com) is sure to thrill when swinging on aerial bridges over the jungle canopy. And then you arrive in Peten! Yes, Tikal is the natural draw, but there’s Yaxha and the island of Topoxte to explore without the crowds. Temples and pyramids to climb with breath-taking vistas, canoes in which to sail over Lake Yaxha (with crocodiles lurking). It truly doesn’t get much better than this. A welcome new addition to the attractions of the host city of Antigua is the La Reunion Golf Resort & Residences, located just eleven miles from the city, where golfers can enjoy “a beautiful challenge” on the 18-hole Dye-designed Fuego Maya Golf Course. (www.antiguagolfresort.com.gt) Those arriving in the splendor of Antigua are well advised to consult “La Antigua Guatemala Prepare to be Amazed,” a directory of some of the finest hotels, restaurants, tour companies, language schools and shopping experiences, (www.gotoantiguaguatemala.com) combining tradition and history. Ana Lucia Funes of the Honduras Institute of Tourism (www.letsgohonduras.com) noted that the marketing initiative of “Todo esta aqui” (“Everything is here”) accurately describes the wonders of Honduras. Besides the Bay Islands and Copan, there are “off-the-beaten-path” circuits which explore the intriguing Lenca culture in remote mountainous colonial cities. The spectacular Bahia de Tela project is underway with the first hotel scheduled to open in 2012. The proud heritage of the Maya celebrated at CATM

Belize: Beautiful “Be One With Belize” boasts of many cultures but “one” people! Divers can enjoy unparalleled diving on its world-famous barrier reef. Ralph Capeling of the Splash Dive Shop (www.splashbelize.com) based in Placencia said, “In addition to diving, we arrange tours to the Cockscomb Basin wildlife sanctuary, to the archaeological site of Lubaantun (where the crystal skull was discovered!), and boat rides to Laughing Bird Caye, a World Heritage Site.” Amazing Mayan sites beckon explorers in Belize; think Caracol and Lamanai! Exuberant nature offers myriad activities for the sports enthusiast. For a romantic rendezvous, Victoria House on Ambergris Caye will be certain to please. (www.victoria-house.com)

General manager Albalorena Amador joked that the Hacienda & Ecolodge Morgan’s Rock (www.morgansrock.com) in San Juan del Sur was considered too perfect to be the stage for the series! Truly Nicaragua’s countless natural and historical attractions are becoming ever more visible in the tourism sector. The immensely charming colonial city of Granada is “akin in ambiance to Antigua itself on a much smaller scale” commented Juan B. Pasos, the general manager of the exquisite Hotel Alhambra. (www.hotelalhambra.com.ni) Intriguing Apoya Lagoon located less than an hour by Managua and twenty minutes from Granada “casts a paradisal spell,” noted JohnMarc Gallagher, general manager of Norome Resort & Villas. (www.noromevillas.com) Declared a biosphere reserve and UNESCO world heritage site, amazing Ometepe island, situated inside Lake Nicaragua, provides such thrills as climbing up volcanic peaks and discovering ancient petroglyphs half-hidden on verdant hillsides. Solentiname (www.solentinametours.com) boasts a cadre of talented artists and artisans creating soughtafter works of art, paintings and balsa wood carvings. The list goes on and on. 30 • DECEMBER 2010

El Salvador: El Salvador touted its effective new marketing campaign of “El Salvador. Everything Included.” A tiny jewel of a country, it offers such exquisite hostelries as Los Almendros de San Lorenzo hotel & restaurant (www.hotelsalvador.com) in the charming colonial town of Suchitoto. El Salvador is committed to preserving and developing its tourism sector in a sustainable manner.

Costa Rica: Costa Rica of “no artificial ingredients” fame still reigns supreme as the most polished sister of these seven alluring sister nations. Maintaining the very highest of standards, Costa Rica provides excitement yet safety, world-class infrastructure yet pristine nature. Tico Times associate publisher Abby Daniell noted that “pura vida” has captured hearts worldwide. Amazing new and renovated properties keep springing up around the country, such as the luxurious Mountain Paradise Hotel (www.hotelmountainparadise.com) near the Arenal Volcano. The Rainforest Alliance (www.rainforest-alliance.org) promotes sustainability and works to conserve biodiversity around the globe. Costa Rica has been a leader in embracing the “green” concept, so vital to the health of our planet.

LATIN AMERICA TARA TOURS TAKES AGENTS TO PANAMA

Tara Tours Inc. of Miami just returned from escorting 35 travel agents to Panama. Agents from nine states visited Panama City, did an aerial tram through the rainforest, danced and dined with the Embera Indigeneous Tribe, did a partial transit through the Panama Canal, visited Monkey Island, saw the ships transit the canal, visited the canal museum and then relaxed at a beachfront property. The properties used were from the Berns Chain such as the Crowne Plaza, Gamboa Rainforest Resort, the Playa Bonita and the Miramar Hotel. Maria Monaco from Adventureland Travel in North Hollywood commented, “The trip was ‘perfect’ in every way! Our previous visits to Panama were just a port of call from a cruise ship on the Caribbean side, and the RT train to Panama City. This was an in-depth view so superior there isn’t any comparison.” From Kathy Lamb, Kahala Travel in San Diego: “Thank you very much for the wonderful fam trip to Panama. It was memorable, informative and fun.” Jackie Deppiese from Gateways to the World in Burlingame, California, said, “Thank you so much for another wonderful trip. I can’t think of one thing that would have made it better…you did a great job as usual, right down to ‘the candy.’ It was fun yet informative, and something I hope to sell.” “Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had a fabulous time and learned soooo much. I have gone through my pictures and can’t believe everything we saw. Panama is a fabulous country and offers so much! I felt safe and appreciated as an American tourist and I felt that I was in excellent hands at all times,” from Kathy Zastrow with Wisconsin’s Middleton Travel. And Marianne Santos of Gullivers Travel in San Luis Obispo, California, said, “I enjoyed the trip very, very much and learned so much about Panama as well as about the canal. I had been through the canal on a cruise years ago but experiencing it as we did on this Fam was much more informative! The Panamanians are doing a great job!” Tara Tours, 800-327-0080, famtrips@taratours.com, www.taratours.com, www.galapagos-amazoncruises.com

AVIANCA-TACA AND COPA AIRLINES TO JOIN STAR ALLIANCE Star Alliance will be expanding its presence in Latin America following the unanimous approval by its Chief Executive Board (CEB), to accept both Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines as future member airlines. The combined network gives Star Alliance a more prominent footprint in Central America, the Caribbean and the northern and western regions of South America, as well as additional direct connections between Latin America and cities in Europe. Star Alliance passengers will in future have access to a large range of new destinations and flights connecting through the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) and the Avianca-TACA hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica). Existing Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines customers will be able to access the global Star Alliance network and make use of the benefits such as collecting and redeeming miles on all member carriers. The addition of the two carrier groups is the culmination of a strategy to extend Star Alliance’s reach which began with the addition of Continental Airlines just over a year ago, improving connections between North America and Central and South America. Further network expansion and improved connectivity to, from and within South America was made possible by the joining of TAM Airlines in May. Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines will bring 46 new destinations to the Star Alliance newtwork. Once integration is complete, the customers of the 31 alliance members will have access to more than 22,500 daily flights serving 1,292 destinations in 188 countries. Miami airport will also benefit from the latest Star Alliance expansion, with the number of Star Alliance member carriers present rising from seven to nine. The integration teams from Star Alliance, Avianca-TACA, Copa Airlines and the respective mentor carriers, Lufthansa and Continental, will now begin work to achieve integration of both airline groups by mid 2012. LATIN AMERICA METROPOLITAN TOURING ANNOUNCES RATES FOR QUITO’S CASONA DE SAN MIGUEL BOUTIQUE HOTEL Quito’s Old Town will shine even brighter with the opening of Ecuador’s Casona de San Miguel boutique hotel in mid-2011. The 31-suite hotel occupies a grand house on the corner of Plaza San Francisco, the capital’s most emblematic square. “Attention to detail during restoration has been exceptional,” says Paulina Burbano de Lara, Metropolitan Touring’s CEO. “We have managed to maintain nearly all of the house’s original architectural features. These include its tall, elegant windows, which provide fantastic views of the Panecillo hillside, the plaza and the cosy, characteristic inner courtyard. The restoration also reinforced the mansion from the bottom up, making it stronger than ever for the coming centuries.” The hotel features a garden-patio with orchids and native plants, a dining room for enjoying refined culinary experiences or simply people-watching in the square beyond, and a rooftop terrace with wraparound views of the historic center’s towers, tiles and spires— unbeatable for watching the frequent religious and cultural events on the square below. “Due to the character of this heritage building, the hotel has rooms of varying sizes and locations,” explains María Cecilia Alzamora, Commercial Vice-President of Inbound Tourism. “We have therefore decided to divide them into three categories, while maintaining the same amenities and services in each.” The names of the rooms reflect the mansion’s rich history: San Miguel was the name of the house, which according to historical records was part of an estate sold in 1850; while San Roque is the name of the old Quito neighbourhood in which the mansion is found. Rack rates for the rooms (double or single occupancy, including breakfast and taxes) will be: [one] Panecillo suite, with a king-size bed and balcony, with views southwards to the Panecillo hillside— $693; 21 San Miguel rooms, eight with king-size beds and 13 doubles with full-size beds—$590; and nine San Roque rooms, five king-size beds and four doubles with full-size beds—$484. Two pairs of rooms are interconnecting, perfect for families. Fourteen rooms can have additional beds installed for children up to 12, with an extra cost of $43. BIRD WATCHING IN BORNEO RANKED AN ESSENTIAL SKILL BY ISLANDS MAGAZINE Islands Magazine compiled a list of essential skills to make the most of a trip. Bird watching in Borneo, Malaysia, ranked tenth on the list. Islands describes bird watching as an activity that allows people to take a moment to observe and appreciate the natural world. “As you do that, you’ll notice the world becoming a more beautiful place right before your eyes,” advises Islands. “Birds let you grasp nature’s subtlety and power.” When choosing a destination for bird watching, travelers should consider the number of endemic species to be seen, the beauty of the Island, or other adventure activities to be experienced, according to Islands. “Or go to Borneo and have it all.” Malaysia has emerged as a bird watching haven with more than 700 species to see. Half of Malaysia’s land mass is covered in rainforests or plantations. With this diversity of habitats, there are many places for the abundant birdlife to choose from in this country. Malaysian rainforests are generally divided into three distinctive habitat types— While each habitat provides an excellent concentrated birding experience, it is not difficult to visit several sites in different ecological zones to enjoy the variation of birdlife. PROFITABLE WORLD OF NICHE MARKETS DIVING AND SNORKELING IS OUTSTANDING IN GUAM

The island of Guam is considered to be an ocean paradise for diving and snorkeling. The consistently warm and clear waters, great varieties of fish and other marine life and a superb support system of dive shops and guest facilities puts Guam at the top of the list for scuba buffs. Divers can visit the island’s one World War I shipwreck and four World War II shipwrecks, historic sunken remnants now festooned in coral and inhabited by shoals of fish. Boat diving is probably the easiest way to approach the reefs and there is a higher likelihood of seeing unique reef sites. On Guam’s deep reefs, divers can find a wilder side with sea turtles, dogtooth tuna, and eagle rays, and much more. Many of the island’s beaches have offshore areas ideal for snorkeling. The waters of Guam have proved to provide some of the best adventure. A dive brochure is available on the Guam Visitors Bureau website. Guam Visitors Bureau, info@visitguam.org, www.visitguam.org

The company, founded and still owned by Jaki and Terry Evans, began life in 1981 as a sailboat charter operator based on Roatán in the Honduras Bay Islands. MEXICO’S RIVIERA MAYA FEATURED IN 2010 WORLD’S BEST DIVING & RESORTS One of Mexico’s most desirable destinations, the Riviera Maya has been highlighted in the 2010 edition of The World’s Best Diving & Resorts, the fifth annual special edition released by the publishers of Sport Diver, a magazine exclusively for diving enthusiasts. “We are thrilled that the Riviera Maya is featured in this year’s edition of The World’s Best Diving & Resorts. Not only does the Riviera Maya boast The Great Maya Reef, the world’s second largest coral barrier reef, but the diving experts in the region are committed to catering to all levels of diving experience to ensure all visitors to the Riviera Maya can partake in this activity in one of the foremost destinations to do so,” states Dario Flota, the General Director of the Riviera Maya Destination Marketing Office. Recognized as one of the most popular diving destinations in the world, the Riviera Maya is located along the eastern coast of Mexico on the Caribbean Ocean. The aquamarine waters are very clear, providing a wide range of vision for divers—upward of 100 feet. With one of the most diverse ecospheres in the world, the Riviera Maya’s rich-fish population is protected, which helps to maintain the underwater ecosystem, giving divers an awe-inspiring variety of fish species and other marine life to discover within the reef. In addition to ocean diving near The Great Maya Reef, divers in the Riviera Maya have the unique opportunity to dive within cenotes, natural sinkholes with depth. The cenotes are part of one of the largest underground cave systems in the world, making them an ideal quest for the seasoned diver. The Riviera Maya has been named a Top Destination in Mexico for five consecutive years by Travel Weekly (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009), awarded with The Best Destination in Mexico by Crystal Apple Award 2008 and 2009, named one of the hottest beach destinations by Orbitz in 2008, and was awarded as the Sexiest Destination by Recommend Magazine. PROFITABLE WORLD OF NICHE MARKETS PRISTINE BAY’S BLACK PEARL GOLF COURSE OPENS FIRST FOR CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS

Pristine Bay Resort, one of the western Caribbean’s most-anticipated resort communities, has announced its Black Pearl golf course opens for Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise ship passengers visiting Roatan December 1. Roatan, an idyllic tropical island 40 miles off the coast of Honduras, is a favorite of scuba divers and an increasingly popular destination on Caribbean cruise itineraries. Carnival and Royal Caribbean ships will dock several times per week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. allowing plenty of time for passengers to play the par-72, 7,179-yard layout followed by lunch at the Sky Lounge or 19th Hole restaurants. The Black Pearl, designed by Pete and Perry Dye, will open to the public at large on January 1, 2011. “After many months of hard work by the Dye Designs team, The Black Pearl is ready for golfers to tee-it-up in one of the most scenic locales in the Caribbean,” says Mario Toriello, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Pristine Bay Resort. “Our cruise ship visitors will be among the first to sample Roatan’s extraordinary introduction to world-class golf.” Golf aficionados will be thoroughly impressed by the Dyes’ handiwork. The Black Pearl’s signature hole is the 157-yard (145 yards from the Blue tees), island-green, par-3 11th. From the tee, players enjoy an exceptional view of the golf course and Caribbean. The green sits in the middle of a lake and is ringed by a narrow bunker to give slightly awry shots a chance of remaining dry. Given the elevated tee and ever-present trade wins, proper club selection will be key to avoiding a big number on the scorecard. “Pete and Perry Dye’s inspired vision and hard work in creating the dramatic Black Pearl has come to fruition,” says Toriello. “Pristine Bay and Roatan are now on the way to becoming one of the world’s spectacular golf destinations.” Additional information about golf membership, real estate options and the coming-soon, 120-room, five-star Resort and Spa at Pristine Bay can be gleaned by visiting the website or emailing Pristine Bay Resort.
