INDUSTRY EVENTS NTA ANNUAL CONVENTION BREAKS RECORD AT WORLD’S GREENEST CONVENTION CENTER The 2008 NTA Annual Convention held this past November in Pittsburgh set a record for materials recycled from a single show at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The center is the first and largest certified green convention center in the world. Officials at the convention center reported that everyone who attended the NTA Convention helped to recycle 9.435 tons of material, comprised of composted materials, cardboard and bottles, cans and loose paper. Additionally, 123,500 gallons of water was reclaimed. These record numbers were not just a reflection of the amount of trash generated by the Convention. Officials attributed the record total to two factors: first, attendees were very conscious to place recyclable items in the bins around the center; and second, the composting total was much higher than other shows because NTA has more food events and larger ones than other shows. “These numbers reflect a true partnership,” says Mark J. Leahy, general manager of the convention center. “It is amazing what can be achieved when an association and a facility work so closely together to lessen the impact on the environment.” The 2008 Annual Convention was NTA’s first green convention, as part of the association’s ongoing efforts to support sustainability. In 2007, NTA adopted a new strategy to officially recognize sustainable travel as part of its core values, a commitment that was applied to the Annual Convention through a wide range of initiatives including an altered transportation schedule and the use of recyclable materials. NTA Chairman and CEO Michele Michalewicz, CTP says, “The conscious effort to be more environmentally responsible made a huge impact, as evident in these astounding numbers. We learned a lot from this first effort and look forward to applying those lessons to future NTA events.” National Tour Association, www.NTAonline.com

Reed Travel Exhibitions’ group of meetings and incentive events —EIBTM in Barcelona, GIBTM in Abu Dhabi, CIBTM in Beijing and AIBTM in Baltimore, USA—have been given a brand makeover to reflect the expansion and market positioning of the portfolio and its flagship event EIBTM. The initials for each event sit in lower case within the diamond. RTE organizes 14 events worldwide, including World Travel Market, Arabian Travel Market, European Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (EIBTM), Americas Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (AIBTM), Asia Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME), International Golf Travel Market, Top Resa, ICCA Exhibition, in association with the ICCA Congress, International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), La Cumbre, City Break, China Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (CIBTM), Gulf Incentive Business Travel & Meetings (GIBTM) and Asia Luxury Travel Market (ALTM). INDUSTRY EVENTS ITB BERLIN SEES BOTH LUXURY AND COST-SAVING TRENDS ON HORIZON

According to ITB Berlin, the travel industry’s leading trade show, the fallout from the global economic crisis will tend to favor niche markets, in particular luxury travel, in 2009. At the same time, bargain hunting and last-minute travel will be dominant. “Whether we like it or not—the idea of saving money at all costs is back with us again,” said Dr. Martin Buck, Director of the Competence Center Travel & Logistics at Messe Berlin. According to the ITB World Travel Trends Report commissioned from IPK International, the effects of the global financial crisis, coupled with uneasiness over prices for raw materials and significant currency fluctuations, means no reliable forecasts can currently be made. This is based on the assessments of tourism experts from 30 countries meeting at the World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa in November 2008, as well as core data supplied by the World Travel Monitor®, recognized as the largest ongoing survey on global travel trends in some 60 source countries. The Forum indicates that short trips within Europe will become increasingly popular next year. “Higher costs and a new kind of insecurity affecting consumers will undoubtedly impact negatively on long-haul travel in 2009,” said Dr. Martin Buck. City-tour vacations will not be enough to counter this trend. He noted the boom in trips to major European cities, which lowcost airlines had significantly accelerated in recent years, would tail off. According to Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

the Trends Report, the growth experienced by low-cost airlines has already come to an end in 2008. Assessments by ITB Berlin indicate business travel, in particular, will suffer. According to Dr. Martin Buck: “Worldwide, international companies have begun to drastically cut their spending on business travel, meetings and incentives. The travel industry is already experiencing the effects of these measures.” He noted that by contrast, the economic downturn would affect consumer travel at a

later date. The Trends Report is available on ITB’s website under Media Centre/Publications. ITB Berlin 2009 will take place Wednesday, March 11, to Sunday, March 15, the fair open for trade visitors from the Wednesday to Friday. Parallel to it, the ITB Berlin Convention will be March 11–14. The Convention is the world’s largest travel industry convention, attracting more than 11,000 participants last year. ITB Berlin, www.itb-berlin.com, www.itb-convention.com

Hans Sohlstrom knew something was different when the letters started coming in. “We’re used to getting plenty of stories and photos from customers taking our tours. But now they’re writing just to let us know how much our catalog has moved them,” explained the president of Grand European Tours, a direct-to-consumer escorted tour company from Lake Oswego, Oregon. The company sells over 40 tours and cruises to Europe and worldwide, primarily serving travelers 50 and older across the U.S. As hints of a souring economy began surfacing last spring, Sohlstrom led a sixmonth charge to strengthen the 30-year-old company. His mission was to make Grand European Tours recognized as the easiest, most enjoyable way to travel by rolling out its most robust offerings yet. At the heart of it all: a newly-designed catalog, along with creative new services like a Towncar pickup service, called VIP Door-to-Door, that whisks travelers to the airport free of charge on every tour, and a boost in personal calls to customers as they plan for their trip. “We are seeing our competitors cutting back on communication to their customers and that can leave those customers feeling abandoned,” says Sohlstrom. “Rather than

move to more marginal efforts in these tougher times, our goal is to put forward our strongest ideas and do things differently by being creative.” The inviting new catalog reads less like a sales piece and more like a sketched travel journal. It’s filled with original watercolor paintings and hand-drawn maps to help it stand out from the sea of photo-based catalogs hitting most mailboxes today. The illustrated cover is a nod to the iconic cartoons from The New Yorker magazine—a new scene is planned for each of the next 10 catalogs, each showing an empty-nester couple, the company’s target audience, enjoying the freedom and joy of travel and inspiring a “next adventure.” “Judging by the response so far from our customers, we know what we are doing hits home. Maintaining our service and value is what is most important right now,” says Sohlstrom. Grand European Tours, 888-522-3950, 800-522-5545, www.getours.com

EUROPE GOBALTICEUROPE.COM/BTC REPORT ON TRAVEL AGENTS SELLING THE BALTICS The Baltics has come a long way as a destination, and no one knows that better than U.S. travel agents trying to sell Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to their clients, as part of Northern Europe’s Baltic Sea region—Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland and Germany, etc. There’s no doubt about it, US travel agents need promotional tools, educational seminars, and fam trips to experience the Baltics, and that’s exactly what's on the horizon. High-quality DVDs showing the beauty of the Baltic States will help to sell the destinations. Overall, the interest in the Baltic States continues to grow in the U.S., and travel agents are selling all types of packages, the best being one-week tours to the Baltic capitals of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. New, too, are Beauty Breaks at Spa Vilnius in Druskininkai, Jewish Heritage Tours, Spiritual Journeys to The “Hill of Crosses,” and Baltic-Scandinavian Adventures, and more. SAS, Finnair, and Air Baltic are majorcarriers to the region. Travel agents should check out the Reval Hotels, which are in all three Baltic countries. In addition, Baltic cruises, also known as Northern Europe or Scandinavian cruises with visits to Tallinn, Estonia, Riga, Latvia, Klaipeda, Lithuania, Stockholm, Sweden, Copenhagen, Denmark, and other port cities are especially popular with Americans. They like the idea of what the Balts call “floating hotels.” What better

way to see so many different European cities within a matter of days than on a Baltic-Scandinavian cruise? Expected to make a positive impact on tourism this year will be the “Vilnius, European Capital of Culture 2009” Project. Lithuania is celebrating its 1000th anniversary. The Millennium Song Festival of Lithuania -Songs of the Century will be presented the program was organized by the Lithuanian Folk Culture Centre. The opening of the Reconstructed Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania will take place on the same day. Hundreds of cultural events, half of them free, will also be held throughout the year to celebrate “Vilnius, European Capital of Culture 2009.” Although the next BTC Conference is scheduled for the fall, GoBalticEurope.com/Baltic Sea Tourism Commission (BTC) celebrated its fifth consecutive year as an exhibitor at The New York Times Travel Show 2009. ‘OUT OF CONTEXT’ SCHEDULE SET FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2009 Context Travel has prepared the upcoming season’s offerings of its critically-acclaimed Out of Context series. The series pairs scholars from the Context network with unique travel opportunities including specially curated events, visits to museums and monuments normally closed to the public or outside of opening hours, and thematic walks that provide ways to learn about some of the great cities of the world. “The Out of Context series has ballooned into a significant part of our yearly program,” says Context co-founder Paul Bennett. “I know of no other tour operator or walking tour organization that puts together these kinds of events. I mean to get into a place like the Bargello, which was a medieval prison, after hours for a lecture on torture and punishment in the Renaissance or to tour the Explorers Club in New York with a member… These things really speak to what we’re trying to accomplish in the field of travel.” Other 2009 features include a walk of Naples’ catacombs and churches with art historian Dr. Maria Laura Chiacchio who will discuss the Neapolitan Cult of the Dead and by-appointment visits at the Vasari Corridor in Florence, the Vatican Museums in Rome, and the Basilica San Marco in Venice. This year, for the first time, Context will have an event just for kids: a workshop on mythology at the Villa Farnesina in Rome. Opening the villa by request after hours, Context docent and museum educator Linda Nolan will lead the group through a series of activities, using the works of Raphael and other Renaissance artists as a backdrop. More information about the Out of Context series from March–July, 2009 is posted on the Context website. Context Travel, www.contexttravel.com, www.contexttravel.com/main/product/outofcontext.php

MEDITERRANEAN EXOTIC GOZO – ON EUROPE’S DOORSTEP Gozo, famed for those special warm daylight hues alluring to artists, is on the doorstep of Europe, making it a relatively quick getaway and ideal destination. Differing from mainland Malta with its cliffs and steep slopes, it still retains the greenery and rural character of the remote, insular island. The 5,600-year-old Ggantija Temples, the oldest built structure in the world, contains art among the most advanced for Neolithic times. Over time, waves of people have added their legacies to the islands’ culture. People see it now as an idyllic home offering tranquility, dreamy landscapes, alluring sea, sunny weather, hearty food, and the right mix of sophistication and somnolence. The Citadel, Gozo’s old castle, is an omnipresent landmark built on a crag in the middle of the island. Towns are designed in concentric circles around the church and square. There are more than 50 Catholic churches, most grand baroque edifices. Some of the old baroque townhouses have been converted into memorable restaurants, which offer creative concoctions that make use of local items— vegetables, free-range chickens, olive oil, etc., as well as impressive wine cellars. The townhouses—and farmhouses—are also the best accommodation options. Farmhouses have bare, weathered limestone walls, internal courtyards, and lots of rustic features, yet they have been converted into luxury accommodation, many complete with swimming pools. (There are also all other types of accommodations, including five-star hotels.) The countryside is a patchwork of idyllic fields; the coast is sea cliffs, high bluffs and sandy beaches. These include Ramla Bay, often described as the nicest beach in the Mediterranean, and the Blue Lagoon in Comino. Secluded coves can be reached by chartering a skippered boat, or the adventurous way on a canoe (available for rent in many beaches). Gozo and Comino are renowned as the top place in the Mediterranean for scuba diving due to draTravel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

matic underwater topography, great visibility and mild winters. Every summer weekend, each town holds a three-day festival of brass bands and fireworks to commemorate its parish saint. Streets and churches are decorated with strings of electric lights, pennants, statues of saints mounted on wooden podiums; and the town’s folk come out in force. In winter, intermittent rains give the landscape a green cloak, but the weather’s still pleasantly sunny enough for adventures like hiking. Comino, Gozo’s neighbor and the

smallest island in the Maltese Islands, has a walk around its coast that takes in the military forts erected by the Knights of Malta, as well as the rugged rocky habitat. Mountain biking’s an option, too, and rock climbing for adventurers. Gozo’s rural ethos can be experienced at an agro-tourism farm, a sheep farm—even fishing with a real fisherman, then cooking the fresh catch! This is what’s great about a small island with a long history to share. Malta Tourism Authority, www.visitmalta.com

MILITARY HERITAGE AT ITS FINEST ON EXHIBIT IN FAYETTEVILLE, NC A quick visit to Fayetteville is all it takes for visitors to see why it was named as ‘America’s most pro-military city’ by Time magazine. Outside of Washington, D.C., Fayetteville is the place to go for those interested in American and military heritage. From its 59,000-square-foot Airborne and Special Operations Museum to 750-plus miles of Revolutionary and Civil War driving and walking trails, to exceptional restaurants, hotels and meeting facilities, Fayetteville has it all. “Fayetteville offers a special experience for visitors, something much different than what they’d get in Washington, D.C. While D.C. celebrates the most famous historical icons, Fayetteville is where the very seeds of American pride and patriotism are sown,” says John Meroski, Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (FACVB) president. Fayetteville’s $22.5-million Airborne & Special Operations Museum allows guests to experience the feel of real-life combat through impressive displays ranging from a Vietnamera “Huey” helicopter to full-size action dioramas. And with over 5,300 hotel rooms, meeting facilities of all shapes and sizes, over 400 restaurants and the 107,000-square-foot Crown Center complex, the area is well-equipped to handle groups of any size or need. “All visitors will enjoy their time here. We have something that caters to every type of guest. Our exceptional restaurants serve up everything from Southern favorites to international cuisine. It’s a win-win situation for visitors traveling for business or pleasure,” says Meroski. Fayetteville’s driving trails stretch over 750 miles and 250 years of history and include themed itineraries ranging from the “Civil War” to “Patriots, Past & Present.” Points of interest include the historic Market House, Freedom Memorial Park and the JFK Special Warfare Museum. The town, once thought of as the home to Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, now offers much more than the military installations that made it famous. Fayettteville is the place to go to restore, revitalize and reaffirm pride in America. The Sands at Grace Bay A Peaceful Spot on Turks & Caicos. J U D I T H G LY N N THE SANDS AT GRACE BAY

You never have to leave The Sands at Grace Bay to relax beside the property's several pools or walk a few steps to its magnificent beach.

S

ome guests are so excited to be here, they don’t care if their room is ready. They change into swimsuits and run to the beach until the end of the day,” said Pierre Beswick, general manager of The Sands at Grace Bay. And who can blame them? The beachfront is part of a 12-mile stretch of calm, translucent-turquoise water and super-fine white sand. Both are complemented by nearby indigenous plant life, which the ecologically savvy Turks and Caicos government mandates cannot be removed. And lucky for The Sands that the 23 beachfront palapas shelters are grandfathered in since they are banned for new developments. “We are one of the properties that caters to everyone,” Beswick continued and mentioned families, couples and wedding parties as guests at the four-star resort. “You can be wealthy or not when you stay here. At other resorts you’ll need a lot of money,” he continued, acknowledging the deep pockets of most island visitors. Many stay on Providenciales, nicknamed “Provo” which is the largest of the Turks and

Caicos eight islands and 40 small cays within the country’s 166 square miles of land. The 114-room Sands at Grace Bay resort is located on six oceanfront acres with six, low-rise, Caribbean-style buildings grouped around several free-form swimming pools, some with connecting canals, cascading waterfalls, a Jacuzzi and small grottoes. Most guests will have a direct or “peek” ocean view. The lush grounds (cared for with recycled water) include meandering walkways, blooming gardens and a secluded three-hammock oasis under palm trees. A recent $6 million rejuvenation throughout the property enhanced the open-air lobby and brought upgrades to all the accommodations, which are privately owned condos. Sizes range from studios to three-bedrooms and from 1,000-1,600 square feet. Furnishings are identical in all and include granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, dishwasher, washer/dryer (including detergent), microwave, dishware, cutlery, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, color TV with cable and free WiFi. however, all are decorated in muted blues and greens and have terracotta tile flooring. An added and most welcome feature is the screened-in patio; some wrap around to include living room and bedroom entrances. Cost-cutting is chic and necessary these days, which makes the freebies offered at The Sands very appealing. Your clients have free use of non-motorized Hobie Cats, kayaks, windsurfing equipment, snorkel gear, plus daytime and evening use of the tennis courts (rackets provided), indoor fitness center, computer station and bicycles. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a rum cocktail, and every Tuesday the manager hosts a sunset rum punch party with complimentary appetizers. The onsite Ocean Vibes (www.oceanvibes.com) tour desk handles dives, charters and other equipment rentals not offered by The Sands. Most of the islands are surrounded with distant reefs that teem with fish, magnificent coral and even exotic medium turtles. The Spa Tropicale (www.spatropique.com) can tailor-make a treatment such as an in-room massage; one at poolside or on the beach. “We don’t claim to be the best at everything so we brought in the best island companies that are service-oriented,” Beswick said recently when he explained The Sands’ decision to outsource certain guest services, in addition to having a knowledgeable staff man its Concierge desk. Considering almost everything on Turks and Caicos is imported, dining-out costs might be higher than anticipated. Guests at The Sands, and especially families, have the benefit of a first-class kitchen in their residence to prepare homecooked meals. Also on-site is a small convenience store, but the local food-shopping treasure is the nearby IGA supermarket where everyone goes to stock up – from food provisions to Cuban cigars ($21) to the no-taxes liquor section. Turks and Caicos’ locally produced rum, Bambarra Gold, sells for $15 a liter. A twice-daily, round-trip shuttle from The Sands to the IGA is available at $8 per person. Hemingway’s restaurant at The Sands is an al fresco, three-meal dining experience that is both a poolside and a beachfront experience offered seven days a week. “The high-end traveler knows good food,” remarked Beswick when he observed the diners who were not guests but chose to eat at the property’s restaurant. Its simple décor has ample spacing between the tables, soft piped-in music and a small, unobtrusive bar area. The genteel atmosphere of Hemingway’s is like having a country club venue in your own backyard. Dress is casual to casual-chic with no outrageous bling to distract from the restaurant’s understated, yet comfortable, ambiance. Also, Hemingway’s does not automatically include a 10% service charge to the check, unlike some other island restaurants. Special packages for your client’s consideration are: Honeymoon Over Grace Bay costs $1,250 for up to 10 partic-

The Luxury Romance Package costs $550 or $1,125 per couple and can include massages, cruises, a personalized photography session of 10 images in a hard cover story book (www.tropicalimaging.com), plus other amenities. Room rates vary considerably and are seasonal: $185 for a studio to $1,200 for a three-bedroom, deluxe waterfront suite. There is a 10% government tax and a 10% service charge added to all rates. When visiting The Sands Resort at Grace Bay, there are a few tips to remember. The dollar is the local currency, and English is spoken. There are approximately five ATMs island wide and no traffic lights. Driving is on the left side of the road. Cab rides to other resorts cost about $10 per person, each way, which makes a car rental more desirable. There is one semi-private, 18-hole golf course.

LATIN AMERICA DAVID NEELEMAN’S BRAZILIAN AIRLINE, AZUL, TAKES FLIGHT JetBlue founder David Neeleman recently launched his fourth airline, Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras S.A. The Brazilian domestic carrier provides service between Campinas (Viracopos Airport), Salvador de Bahia, and Porto Alegre. Three airplanes were added to introduce nonstop service from Campinas to both Vitoria (Espirito Santo State) and Curitiba (Parana State) on January 14. With a fleet of 78 Embraer jets on order, Azul will grow in 2009 to serve 25 cities throughout Brazil with 16 aircraft, and will continue to receive an additional jet every month for three years to operate 36 aircraft by the end of 2011. Azul’s Embraer 190 and 195 aircraft have ultra-leather seats in a comfortable two-by-two seat configuration (no middle seats) with a 31-inch seat pitch. The first five rows of each cabin, “Espaco Azul,” offer 34-inch pitch, available for approximately $13 additional per segment. Azul will be the first airline in Latin America to offer live TV on individual monitors by the end of 2009. The airline plans to change the way Brazilians fly, bypassing congested hubs and offering point-topoint service with exceptional quality and lower prices. “Having been born in Brazil, it’s so exciting to be able to start a new airline in my other home,” Mr. Neeleman said. “Brazil is the second largest economy in the Americas—and 10th in the world—but only about five percent of Brazilians currently fly given the high cost of domestic travel.” “There is tremendous unsatisfied leisure demand for airline seats because fares are too high. As a result, 150 million people travel by long-distance bus,” he added. The first flight (AD 4064) departs at noon from Campinas to Salvador de Bahia. Three hours later, Azul’s second flight (AD 4062) leaves Viracopos to Porto Alegre, in Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul. The schedule comprises five daily roundtrips. LATIN AMERICA CASA HIGUERAS: CHILEAN BOUTIQUE HOTEL COMBINES CHARM AND ELEGANCE

KLEIN TOURS CELEBRATES CONSERVATION AND DARWIN’S 200TH ANNIVERSARY This year marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth on February 12, 1809, one of the most significant anniversaries in science and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection” which sold out on the first day of its publication in 1859. In it, Darwin’s research argued at length about how organisms gradually evolve from common ancestors through the process he called “natural selection” by presenting evidence gained in his journey on the HMS Beagle. Because of the importance that the Galapagos Islands have in science, they have been recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site and the international scientific community has named the islands as a unique “living laboratory of evolution.” Klein Tours is inviting travelers to come and be part of this special celebration aboard its luxury fleet to see firsthand the fauna that led Darwin to his famous theory. Contrasting with the rusticity of Valparaíso, Chile, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a renovated hilltop antique mansion from the 1930s that looks like a Mediterranean villa, Casa Higueras boutique + design hotel. Considered boutique for its cozy intimacy, the hotel has only 20 guestrooms—some measuring nearly 645 square feet—throughout four of its seven floors: five standard rooms, four premium, four premium superior and seven suites. Most feature an independent terrace and all come with parquet floors, electronic locks, windows with thermal panes, mini-bars, and more. A fully-equipped conference salon is available free of charge to those booking eight minimum guestrooms. “The challenge was to create a first-rate hotel where guests are made to feel at home,” say the hotel’s owners Gonzalo Velasco, a furniture designer and expert in stylish design for more than 30 years, and Teresita Navarro, a textile designer. “We have chosen one of the most beautiful mansions in Valparaíso,” they add, truly satisfied with their creation. Niceties like a “Fig Sour” over illuminated port views; an infinity pool that literally “hangs” from the hill; spacious bathrooms with Italian-made bathtubs; guestrooms with antique fireplaces— all harken back to thirties’ elegance. “One of our biggest challenges is to ensure that our guests feel at home and return again and again to relive a marvelous experience,” says Enrique Papic, General Manager. TODAY SHOW BROADCAST ANCHOR ANN CURRY’S KILIMANJARO CLIMB NBC-TV’s The Today Show broadcast news anchor Ann Curry’s Kilimanjaro climb live from Tanzania as part of a weeklong segment titled “Ends of the Earth” last year. The series focused on the effects of climate change around the world. To report on the rumors that global warming was melting Mt. Kilimanjaro’s famed icecapped summit. Seven days out, having reached the Arrow Glacier Camp at 15,700 feet, the Today Show group reluctantly abandoned their efforts to reach the summit. The news anchor said, however, they had achieved their goal, which was to show viewers how much the glaciers on top of Kilimanjaro have melted over the past 20 years. They chose the most difficult route so they would come closest to the glaciers. Named “One of the Top Destinations for 2008” by the New York Times and immortalized in movies and books such as Ernest Hemingway’s “The Snows of Kilimanjaro, “climbing Kilimanjaro is the adventure of a lifetime, but one must train well and pace oneself not to go too fast,” says Peter Mwenguo, Managing Director, Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB). AFRICA NEW SAA FLIGHT CONNECTIONS WILL BOOST ACCESS FROM U.S. TO TANZANIA Travel to Tanzania will be more convenient than ever this year beginning in May when South African Airways (SAA) launches its new non-stop service to Johannesburg, South Africa, with same-day connections to Tanzania. The early departures from New York’s JFK Airport to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), then on to Dar es Salaam, will boost business and leisure travel to Tanzania. Peter Mwenguo, Managing Director, Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), applauded SAA’s move to provide same-day connections to Dar es Salaam on their New York Flights. “The timing is excellent. Tanzania tourism is booming, and in 2007, we had more visitors from the US than any other country worldwide. This new schedule from New York on SAA will be a big boost for American tour operators and travel agents who often find it difficult to get air lift into Tanzania for their clients at peak times. TTB looks forward to working with SAA to promote this new route and the SAA Tanzania vacation packages.” “SAA considers Tanzania to be a key market with optimal growth opportunities,” said Marc Cavaliere, Executive Vice President, North America for SAA. Prior to the new schedule, SAA travelers to Tanzania had to spend a night in Johannesburg. With the launch of the new schedule, SAA’s flight to Tanzania will leave JFK at 11:35 am EST and arrive in Johannesburg at 8:45 am (next day): the flight to Tanzania will then depart at 2:55 pm and arrive in Dar at 7:25 pm. SAA flights to New York will depart from Dar at 7:25 am and arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) at 10:10 am. Departure from JNB to New York will take place at 7:45 pm, with arrival at JFK at 7:40 pm. TRAVELERS’ PHILANTHROPY CONFERENCE IN TANZANIA EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS Over 225 delegates attended the 2008 Travelers’ Philanthropy Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, the largest and most diverse conference ever held on this theme. The three-day conference, at which Nobel Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai, founder and leader of Kenya’s Green Belt Movement, gave the opening keynote address, also marked the first time that travelers’ philanthropy had been addressed in Africa. Travelers’ philanthropy is rapidly growing into a worldwide movement and becoming part of the definition of responsible travel. At its core, it’s about tourism businesses and travelers ‘giving back’ to tourism destinations with financial support, expertise, and material contributions to local projects and community initiatives. “We are thrilled with the results of the conference. Not only did more delegates attend than we had expected, but the conference is also generating a number of new educational materials that will help to strengthen travelers’ philanthropy initiatives,” says Martha Honey, Co-Director of the Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) that organized the conference and runs the Travelers’

Philanthropy Program. “These materials will help provide, for the first time, the tools to help tourism businesses and host communities initiate and effectively carry out travelers’ philanthropy projects.” Participants to the conference came from over 20 countries. Nearly half received full or partial scholarships to attend, thanks to funds provided by the Ford Foundation, USAID, the United Nations Foundation, and the United States Institute for Peace. In his keynote address at the conference, Dr. David Western, founder of the Africa Conservation Centre and former director of the Kenya Wildlife Service, described travelers’ philanthropy as an effort to “martial the well-intentioned impulses of the traveler” to support needs in the local community. He said it derives from the concept of the Good Samaritan, “the wayfarer who helped even those who he did not know.” The conference was endorsed and supported by partners and sponsors, and the Ford Foundation. Travelers’ Philanthropy is a project of the Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development. AFRICA NOMAD ADVENTURE TOURS ADDS TO NAMIBIA AND BOTSWANA DEPARTURES Andrew Kelleher, Sales and Marketing Manager for Nomad Tours based in Cape Town, South Africa, has announced an increase in departures to Namibia and Botswana as a result of the American market’s added interest in the unusual destinations. Nomad’s adventure tours use speciallydesigned trucks that seat up to 24 people and are fully self-contained, including cooking equipment, refrigerators, freezers, luggage storage and camping gear. Kelleher stated that “traditionally this market has been a backpacker market for people interested in seeing Africa on a budget. However, the market is changing and we are now carrying people of all ages, many of whom prefer to sleep in a bed with an ensuite, but who still want to enjoy the freedom and adventure that our vehicles provide.” This touring method is also very environmentally friendly when compared with selfdrive safaris. Many companies such as Nomad are taking the environment very seriously by taking routes with less impact on wildlife and plant life, using campsites with better rubbish removal and even attempting to use different fuel sources. Countries like Namibia are a valid choice for Americans given the current strength of the dollar and what it buys locally: once a flight and tour is paid for, local expenditure will amount to much less than a trip to Europe. Africa Travel Association’s 2009 Congress Means Business! Themed “Connecting Destination Africa,” ATA’s upcoming 34th Annual Congress and Marketing Seminar to be held in Egypt’s crossroads capital — Cairo. M A R Y E L L E N S C H U LT Z

F

ounded in 1975, Africa Travel Association (ATA) was the first industry association to promote exclusively tourism and investment opportunities between the U.S. and Africa. ATA executive director Edward Bergman and Egyptian Tourism Minister Hon. Zoheir Garranah, have announced that the Egyptian Tourism Ministry, along with the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA), will host ATA’s 34th Annual Congress in Cairo, Egypt, from May 17–22, 2009. Travel World News visited Bergman recently at ATA’s New York headquarters, to discuss ATA’s evolution — and how this year’s Congress will showcase some of EDDIE BERGMAN these changes. Travel World News: Since becoming ATA’s executive director nearly three years ago, you’ve been stressing transformation and change for the association. Has there been? Eddie Bergman: Quite definitely. We’ve been redefining who and what we are…as you know, ATA began as a professional association to promote tourism and investment between our two continents. Over the years, though, the original membership guidelines became more relaxed. Our mandate is to reinvigorate the “business-to-business-ness” of African tourism…which was ATA’s original strength. TWN: ATA’s premier event is its annual Congress, held each year in a different African country. Why Egypt in 2009? EB: Egypt has longstanding ties with ATA and wants to highlight its importance — both as standalone destination and as the perfect air connection for inter- and intracontinental travel to/from Africa, the Middle East and beyond. We last held a Congress there in 1991, not long after Egypt had begun tourism promotion. By 2004, their arrivals had reached a record-high of 8.6 million visitors and became the country’s largest source of foreign currency revenue; 16 million arrivals are expected by 2014! Plus, due to its easy access, we’re hoping that other North African tourism ministers — including Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria — will join us in Cairo. 40 • FEBRUARY 2009

TWN: Who should attend this year’s ATA Congress in Cairo? EB: All those interested in tourism promotion of the entire continent! Obviously, we want all of our current members to attend, but we’re also trying to attract serious travel professionals who are curious about ATA, including buyers beyond the traditional tourist-generating countries to Africa (e.g., nontraditional markets such as Asia and the Caribbean)…The Congress provides an incredible opportunity to meet Africa-based suppliers from across the continent — from Cairo to Cape Town, from Mali to Malawi! — all in one place. The focus is for overseas buyers to meet with local suppliers, and this is a great opportunity to develop both classic and innovative packages that connect Egypt with the rest of Africa. TWN: Please give us an example of positive results from a recent ATA Congress or other annual event? EB: One of the most exciting was the signing last year of our first Premier Partnership with Dubai World Africa (DWA), following their participation in last year’s Ecotourism Symposium in Djibouti…DWA is investing several billion dollars in tourism/business development in Africa over the next five years…this partnership gave us blue-chip credentials and has begun providing recognition among our global membership, allowing many branding and sponsorship opportunities at our annual events. We’re also excited about our growing Diaspora Initiative (launched following our 2006 Congress in Ghana), because it’s opening doors to a still relatively untapped market for Africa’s vast tourism potential. TWN: The strong ministerial presence at the Congresses is unique to ATA and provides extraordinary one-on-one interface opportunities. Are there plans to expand on this in Cairo? EB: Yes, that’s something we’re very proud of…ATA’s enjoyed this ability to have attendees meet various tourism ministers during our Congresses. Our programs have included ministerial panels in the past, with several ministers sharing the same table. Now, totally new, we’re planning to introduce individual roundtables with several ministers… Plan is that each minister would meet with a small group of tour operators and other retailers for in-depth sessions lasting around an hour, when participants would move on to the next minister’s table, etc…imagine what a fantastic opportunity for in-depth product development! www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

AFRICA ENRICO MARTINO

Eternally powerful – the Pyramids at Giza, Egypt.

TWN: Will a Business Exchange also be part of the program? EB: As a matter of fact, yes! We’ll be launching our first Africa Business Exchange as part of the Buyer’s Marketplace Expo. No more missed-chance meetings or disappointments! We’re planning to provide buyers one day for pre-scheduled 15-minute meetings with Africa-based suppliers. Final details are being worked out, and there should be approximately 24 sessions total, along with a working lunch for additional networking. As in other shows, early-bird sign-up will save the additional cost for the exchange that would be added to later-registration fees. Another advantage of prescheduling, is that you’d be able to reserve a seat for a Minister’s roundtable. TWN: What do you see as the main challenge to generating excitement about this Congress? EB: Obviously, the current economic climate, but the desire to travel, both on and not-so-on a budget, remain strong…What we hope is to attract serious suppliers, travel agents and tour operators — both members and those considering membership — and make the Congress a not-tobe-missed event to initiate and consolidate business opportunities. TWN: How are you promoting the Congress? EB: We kicked off a three-city promotional tour January 9 in Chicago (in conjunction with the Adventures in Travel Expo), then on January 26 in Atlanta (following the Atlanta Travel Expo), closing this February 26 in Los Angeles (after the LA Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

Times Travel & Adventure Show). Of course, we’ll be available to answer questions at our booths in the New York Times Travel Show (February 6–9) in New York City and at the ATA U.S.–Africa Sports Tourism Seminar (February 19–20) in Washington, DC, held just prior the Adventures in Travel Expo there (February 21–22). TWN: Is any venue/air/hotel information available yet? EB: The Congress will be held at the Cairo International Conference Center (CICC) for five days (May 17–21). Egypt Air will be the official Congress carrier and the Fairmont Heliopolis the event headquarters… the government is subsidizing the hotel, so the rates will be very attractive. We’ll be posting updates on our website soon. TWN: In closing, what is your hope for the Congress? EB: Honestly, trying to pack so much into such a limited time is somewhat daunting, but we want to make attending the Congress really worth attendees’ time, money and investment…suppliers need to be able to say at the end of the week, “I met with 20 [or 25…or even 30!] prospects who might actually be converted into real customers!” We’re hoping for the largest attendance ever; we want to be as productive as possible; we want attendees to take advantage of Egypt’s countless attractions, plus realize how easy it is to connect from there to the rest of Africa…and May’s right around the corner!

AFRICA MARA INTREPIDS CAMP FEATURED BY CONDE NAST AS TOP AFRICAN RESORT

For the second year running, Heritage Hotels’ Mara Intrepids Camp in Kenya’s Maasai Mara was selected by readers of Conde Nast Traveler in 2008 as one of the top 50 resorts in Africa. Property scores are higher than ever before too for the second year, indicating the African tourism industry’s dedication to increasingly high standards when it comes to accommodation, experience and service. This award couldn’t be timelier for Mara Intrepids Camp, as the property is just finishing a massive refurbishment including all new tents, three new family units, fresh, classic safari decor and all new soft furnishings. Traveler’s editors report that these properties “manage to exceed our expectations, and it is also a credit to the worldly expertise of Conde Nast Traveler readers, passionate travelers for whom no island is too remote, no city too challenging, no hotel too untested.” Certainly the inherent luxury of a safari in Kenya coupled with superior guiding experience make Mara Intrepids Camp a perennial favorite. Sitting above a sweeping bend in the Talek River, at the confluence of the Maasai Mara’s four game-viewing areas, the 30 tents at Mara Intrepids Camp enjoy one of the most spectacular locations in the entire Mara ecosystem. Heritage Hotels operates eight luxury camps, resorts and lodges in Kenya. The Explorer Collection, including Lamu’s Kipungani Explorer and the Masai Mara’s Mara Explorer, offer travelers fivestar style and intimate, exclusive settings. Also operated by Heritage Hotels, the Intrepids Safari Camps and Lodge collection, including Mara Intrepids, Samburu Intrepids, Siana Springs and the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort, provide a classic African safari experience. AFFORDABLE SAFARI TRIP OF A LIFETIME NOW OFFERED BY EXPRESS TRAVEL The Express Travel Group destination management company, which for over 50 years has exposed travelers to the wonders of Africa, has just added another fabulous journey. The new affordable safari offers people a chance to see the same stunning scenery, experience the same jaw-dropping animal encounters and stay in the same exotic, luxurious camps but without many costs that come with most African safaris. For those who’ve dreamed of getting up close and personal to a 10,000-pound elephant, would love to see flamingo flocks paint the shores of the Nakuru, or long to see with their own eyes the “Big Five,” this is a once-in-a-lifetime, affordable safari. “Some people think that an African safari is far-fetched dream that will never come true,” says Richard Markham, managing director for that last 15 years at ETG. “However, Express Travel Group has put together this affordable African safari that is a perfect way to make that lifelong vision become a reality.” The one-week safari through Kenya starts off in the bush country of Samburu, home to species such as oryx, gerenuk and the reticulated giraffe. The week ends at either the Mara Siana Springs tented camp or Mara Intrepids Luxury Tented Camp with a day of game viewing in a 4WD vehicle with an opentop roof. Here one is likely to see wildebeest, zebra and possibly a cheetah or a leopard. The week is packed full of adventure, great food and lasting memories. The trip costs from $1,850—$2,445 depending on time of year. Most meals, all park entrance fees, transport, game drives and other details are all included. AFRICA KIMBLA-MANTANA UGANDA OPENS THE ENGAGI LODGE IN UGANDA Kimbla-Mantana Uganda has opened its newest accommodation, The Engagi Lodge, in Bwindi, Uganda. Situated on a large tract contiguous with the Bwindi National Park running from the main Buhoma road down to the Munyaga River, the Engagi Lodge serves as an ideal base camp for gorilla trekking in the Bwindi National Park. (Engagi means “gorilla” in Rukiga, the language spoken in and around Bwindi.) The main lodge is divided into three sections: a “rock” bar, the restaurant, and a large wooden veranda with a separate outdoor-viewing platform. The lodge is openended at the front to allow a dramatic view of the National Park forest from every corner inside the building. It was constructed entirely from rocks found in and around the site and eucalyptus trees, with its roof thatched using banana fiber sourced from local farmers. The kitchen, a distance away to ensure privacy, prepares a variety of three-course meals, and all requirements such as vegetarianism/vegan are catered to by a team of experienced chefs. The lodge consists of just eight en-suite cottages, evenly spaced out and hidden in the foliage. Each cottage has either double or twin beds (complete with hot water bottles), a bathroom with flushing toilets, and hot and cold running water. All have private verandas where guests can enjoy morning tea or coffee. Electricity is solar with a backup generator, and wood-burning boilers supply hot water. Plans include changing to solar-powered heaters in the future with the wood burners as backup. The main reception has been positioned up on the Buhoma Road, with a large and secure roadside car-park, both a good distance away from the main lodge. Drivers can be accommodated in the permanent staff buildings. There are private walking trails around the lodge and to the river, and functioning community tea farms inside the site. The Engagi Lodge offers classic accommodations in the Bwindi area. Tour operaTravel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

GOWAY PLANS EXCLUSIVES FOR UN’S ‘YEAR OF THE GORILLA’ In order to raise money for primates threatened with extinction from disease, hunting and deforestation, the UN in December launched the “Year of the Gorilla” with Prince Albert II of Monaco and representatives from over 100 governments gathering in Rome to discuss measures to save nearly 30 species endangered. Goway’s AFRICAExperts has arranged programs where travelers can encounter these spectacular creatures up close. One is a seven-day ‘Gorillas, Wildlife & Chimps’ that includes gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda and chimp trekking, from $3,547. Bwindi, where rare mountain gorilla twins have been born, is home to an estimated 340 mountain gorillas, around half the global population. Also on offer is the three or four-day ‘Mountain Gorilla Encounter’ in Rwanda from $2,445 which includes flights from Nairobi and a

city tour of Kigali including a visit to the moving Genocide Memorial & Education Center. Accommodation in the capital is at the first-class Intercontinental Hotel or similar. Morning gorilla treks occur on days two and three and guests overnight at the Gorilla Nest Lodge. “Before I saw my first mountain gorilla he brushed my shoulder as he bounded from the canopy above and went somersaulting down the track behind me,” says Bruce Hodge, President of 39-year-old Goway. “There was another gorilla in the undergrowth to the left and one to the right and even more in the bamboo canopy above. Wow…were we ever close!” The place was Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, East Africa, the region where Dian Fossey became famous. “I feel privileged to be one of the very few travelers who have ever encountered mountain gorillas in their own habitat” continued Hodge. Since only eight permits are issued each day in Rwanda to visit each of five families habituated for tourists, a small number of travelers get to encounter mountain gorillas in their habitat. Early booking is essential. Goway Travel, 800-245-0920, www.goway.com/africa/uganda/gorillaswildlife-chimps.html, www.goway.com/africa/rwanda/index.html

AFRICA PREMIER TOURISM GROUP REVIVING TRADITIONAL ZIMBABWEAN CIRCUIT Africa Albida Tourism (AAT) is a new grouping of Southern African tourism offerings, with the award-winning Victoria Falls Safari Lodge as its flagship. The Group made its debut at Africa’s premier tourism showcase, Indaba, last May. AAT links the inimitable Victoria Falls with the prolific wildlife of Hwange and stunning scenery of Kariba. Transfers are by light aircraft. The group has an impressive portfolio of properties, as well as new offerings certain to resuscitate the well-loved Zimbabwean route. Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge is on the fringes of the Upper Zambezi from Victoria Falls, and is frequented by huge herds of elephant roaming the bordering Chobe Forest Reserve. In addition to standard game activities, it’s a superb fishing destination. The Hide offers an ideal base from which to enjoy wildlife in profusion in the world-renowned game reserve. An elite lodge, it links to the resort hub of Victoria Falls and Bumi Hills at Lake Kariba by seat-in-plane light aircraft transfers, landing at Hwange Main Airstrip. Bumi Hills Safari Lodge, the ultra-luxurious Kariba favorite, reopens this February as a romantic, Out-of-Africa getaway on the game-rich shores at the Ume River-mouth and bordering the Matusadona National Park. With a total refurbishment and redesign, the five-star lodge has fine dining, an infinity pool and bar overlooking the shoreline, conference rooms, and a spa with a majestic vista. Wild Horizons Sanctuary Lodge, a fully-tented 18-bed camp in the Victoria Falls National Park, is scheduled to open in May 2009. Located downstream of the Victoria Falls bounded by the Masuwe River and the Batoka gorges, the camp has views of the spray, the majestic Zambezi beyond and awesome gorges separating Zimbabwe and Zambia. One can expect close interaction with wildlife, in particular elephant, cheetah and rhino being introduced at the adjacent Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary. The deluxe lodge designed using safari architecture unique in Zimbabwe will boast nine, approximately 700-square-foot air-conditioned units. Chundu Island is a completely new concept in the middle of the legendary Zambezi, upriver of Victoria Falls. Positioned as a totally pampered African river island experience pre- or end-of-safari, it’s designed to deliver rest and relaxation in 12 luxuriously appointed tented rooms, each with awesome river views. The accent is on exclusivity and superior service, typified by the island’s unique mobile spa. Chundu Island welcomes its first guests in the third quarter of 2009. Santonga is the world’s first bio-park, and will offer an educational wildlife and African entertainment experience in a setting adjacent to the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. Modelled on an African village, Santonga will fuse audio-visual technology to present a highly-interactive six-hour geo-historical, anthropological and wildlife encounter. Santonga Park opens in 2010 and is expected to increase length of stay in Victoria Falls. Africa Albida Tourism, www.africaalbidatourism.com www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

ROYAL MADIKWE EXCELS AS TOP LUXURY VILLA IN AFRICA Royal Madikwe, an exclusive game lodge in South Africa’s North West Province, confirmed Africa’s place within the fold of private luxury villas when it was honored at the coveted 2008 Luxury World Hotel Awards. Competing with the world’s top villa destinations, this five-star bush retreat, situated in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, excelled as the only African property among the four top-seeded contenders in the Luxury Villa Resorts grouping of these annual awards. Selected from votes cast by travel industry delegates from across the globe, Royal Madikwe shares the esteem of finalist with DISINI Luxury Spa Villas in Indonesia and Paradise Luxury Villas in Crete, while Greece’s exquisite Elounda Gulf Villas & Suites was crowned overall category winner. The World Luxury Hotel Awards was established in 2007 as a celebration of the ultimate achievement in the hospitality industry, with finalists and winners representing all categories in the luxury hotel industry acknowledged for world-class facilities and service excellence. This latest accolade follows Royal Madikwe’s recent success at the SA Tourism Welcome Awards 2008, where it clinched poll position in the Lodges Category. The five-star private ‘safari home,’ situated in a game-rich wilderness region adjacent to the Botswana border, offers undivided use to each reservation, allowing a single party of up to only 10 guests to interact with nature in a lavish milieu that has

exceptional accommodation, service and cuisine. The lodge recently unveiled its new Royal Suite, which offers a freestanding African residence ideal for a small party or family of four. The same contrast of natural tones and contemporary yet comfortable design exists throughout the rest of the property which includes five open-plan styled private suites, each with its own distinct setting, as well as an additional family suite in the main lodge. Royal Madikwe is passionately committed to responsible tourism practices and is the first establishment in the North West Province to carry the esteemed Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FITSA) Trademark, which embodies a devotion to combining tourism, environmental management and local economic development.
