INDUSTRY EVENTS ITE MEETS MARKET DEMAND BY CANCELING DUPLICATE EVENTS FOR HIGHER MITT IMPACT
ITE Group Plc, organizer of Russia’s largest travel event, MITT, has announced its decision to withdraw from organizing the autumn travel exhibition, Otdykh/Leisure 2010, previously held in partnership with MSI Fairs & Exhibitions at Expocentre in September. In response to the market, the decision was made to cancel duplicate, seasonal travel events. It was welcomed by all the major market players, the largest tour operators, trade associations, national tourism boards and travel agents. The organizer believes the decision will have a positive effect on the development of Russia’s travel market, allowing travel companies and state organizations to optimize their promotional budgets and enabling trade visitors to learn about new offers during a larger, more comprehensive event. The decision also means that ITE will be able to focus all its efforts, experience and resources on its flagship travel event—MITT, one of the top five travel exhibitions in the world. MITT 2011 will take place March 16–19 at Expocentre. MITT is the largest travel and tourism exhibition in Russia, showcasing over 3,000 companies from 120 countries and regions. In 2010, the event registered an attendance of 79,500. ITE Group Plc, www.travel-exhibitions.com
B-FOR INTERNATIONAL’S DISCOVER AMERICA PAVILION AT TTG INCONTRI TTG Incontri, scheduled for October 22 - 24, in Rimini, Italy, is the most important B2B event for the Italian tourism industry— the gateway to the Italian travel market, with 2,400 exhibitors from 100 countries, over 35,000 professional operators, agents and buyers, representing the entire distribution chain, as well as major speakers and workshops. Ninety percent of organized travel in Italy is handled by travel agents who constitute more than 70 percent of the TTG Incontri visitors. This year, the Discover America Pavilion will have its first-ever presence at the show. With its strict business-to-business format, TTG Incontri was added to the worldwide Discover America Pavilion Program as the premier place for U.S. destinations and suppliers to network and establish new business from the Italian market. 4 • JULY 2010
Participation provides the Discover America branding, prime show location, state-of-the-art quality and design, an individual booth as described, exhibitor passes, listing in the official show catalog and pavilion directories, hospitality and business services, Internet access, bilingual Pavilion staff, daily cleaning and waste disposal and press and media services where applicable. A reservation of space with the Pavilion includes sponsorship and promotional opportunities; optional rental furniture, plants, equipment; custom signage and graphics; custom booths; in-booth Wi-Fi Internet; on-site labor; booth staff and interpreters; consolidated shipments; hotel accommodations, and VAT refund service. TTG INCONTRI is the place for generating new contacts, launching new products and promoting brands to a target audience. The Italian service industry is expanding and confidence levels are rising, providing a solid basis for continued increases in inbound travel to the U.S. from Italy. Italian visitation to the U.S has increased 8.9 percent year to date and is projected to continue increasing in the coming years according to the Office of Travel and Tourism. Those interested can see what Discover America Pavilion offers and how to apply online. B-FOR International, mwalsh@exhibitpro.com, b-for@exhibitpro.com, www.discoveramericapavilion.com
BUYERS FROM 48 COUNTRIES/DESTINATIONS HEADING TO PTM2010 Over 250 buyer delegates have registered for this year’s PATA Travel Mart (PTM2010), set for September 14–17 in Macau. These buyers have been vetted carefully by the PTM2010 Buyer Selection Committee, established earlier this year to scrutinize and approve all applications. Purchasing managers of many major airlines and national carriers are already on board for PTM 2010, including British Airways, Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. PATA is also working closely with the host of this year’s event, the Macau Government Tourist Office, as well as several PATA chapters in Europe, North America and Asia to recruit quality buyers from across the globe. Michael Ross, Director–Product Development, Club ABC Tours, USA, says, “PTM presents an excellent opportunity to meet suppliers across the Asia Pacific region. In spite of economic conditions and factors beyond anyone’s control, savvy travelers continue to seek products that are creative, fun and a good value proposition.” This year’s PATA Travel Mart shows a particularly strong presence from Europe and Southeast Asia—33 percent and 24 percent respectively. With over 250 buyers already registered, the package is available only on a first-come, first-served basis. PTM2010 at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel promises a full range of qualified and enthusiastic buyers seeking networking and contracting opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. PATA has confirmed that PTM 2011 will take place in New Delhi. Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), www.PATA.org www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News
INDUSTRY EVENTS NY TRAVEL & ADVENTURE SHOW GOING WHERE THE MONEY IS UNICOMM is changing the venue and dates for this year’s New York Travel & Adventure Show, moving the event from the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (October 2–3) to October 16–17 at the Meadowlands Expo Center in New Jersey. According to CEO John Golicz, “By locating the show in a North and Central New Jersey market, we are going to penetrate an affluent ‘travel’ market that isn’t currently being served. Research shows this location is ideal for attracting upper income families residing in 10 of the richest counties in New Jersey and New York—all within a 25-mile radius.” He explained that attendance from the New Jersey drive market—those who make the money in NYC but live in the New Jersey and Westchester suburbs—was declining. These groups of attendees simply aren’t interested in coming into the city on the weekend.” Golicz sees consumer events choosing to locate in affluent New York Metro suburbs successfully packing in attendees. And everyone wins as a result: Exhibitors will save on hotel and venue costs, including substantial free drayage.
Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com
Exhibitors will gain access to the drive market and New Jersey’s affluent communities. UNICOMM is taking the savings and reinvesting it back into promoting the show through print, broadcast and cable television, radio and outdoor advertising. Consumers benefit from free parking, lowered ticket prices and direct bus route from New York’s Port Authority to the front steps of the Expo Center. And access couldn’t be easier—with New York City and Newark Airport just 12 minutes away from the venue and hotels. Savings in various categories will run from 26 to 60 percent— with the largest savings being hotel ($159 a night against $359), labor rates at around $80 an hour compared to over $150 in Manhattan (hanging signs lift crew $254 instead of $650), and Internet services (Ethernet connection) $550 at the Meadowlands as opposed to $1,195 in New York City. Golicz points out that with the savings, exhibitors will now have an opportunity to either increase their space, bring in a more dynamic display to lure in traffic, or do their own promotion in the market. “You’ll even look like a hero,” he says, “when you deliver quality leads at a much lower cost.” NY Travel & Adventure Show, www.adventureexpo.com; UNICOMM, www.unicomm.org

INDUSTRY EVENTS JAPEX 2010 A RESOUNDING SUCCESS NOEL THOMPSON

WTM’S MERIDIAN CLUB THINK TANK FOR SENIOR BUYERS PROVES GREAT SUCCESS World Travel Market, the premier global event for the travel industry, recently launched its first executive Think Tank program for senior buyers in its Meridian Club. According to the meeting held at The Luxe restaurant in east London June 3, national and regional tourism boards should pay more attention to sports tourism. Around a dozen executives, from small independents to established mainstream operators, agreed that public and private sector bodies needed to be more proactive in identifying events and activities that would attract visitors and promote their destination to a wider audience. Events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics and Paralympics Games and The Ashes are established travel products. However, there are national and regional championships for all sports and it was felt that the market for hosting specialist and niche events was currently underestimated by governments and tourist boards. Increasingly, organizers of high-profile events control the supply and pricing for tickets, making it difficult for businesses to offer consumers a competitive price and retain a margin. Commitments on tickets and hotels need to be made upfront, which has a negative effect on cash flow. Tickets to smaller events, from lawn bowls and netball to wrestling and darts, are easier to access. Operators can package them with other excursions and tourism products, giving traveler value while also satisfying their own bottom-line requirements. 6 • JULY 2010
A sports marketing specialist said the return on investment for a country or region hosting and promoting a niche event would be greater than spending the budget on a generic campaign. Sports tourism also covers participation, where visitors take part in their chosen activity rather than watch. This is another area where tourist boards can help the industry while helping their region. A golf breaks specialist felt that regional tourist boards were more supportive than national ones. Professional coaching was identified as one area where operators can generate margins because it’s more difficult for customers to book this type of break themselves. It was pointed out that the overall size of the sports tourism market was difficult to judge because so many people book independently. Fiona Jeffrey, chairman of World Travel Market, said: “World Travel Market is the premier global event for business, and this discussion has really opened our eyes to the scale and complexity of the sports tourism market and what we can do to help operators and destinations exploit this vast opportunity.” The meeting heralded the start of a new initiative from World Travel Market: a year-round executive Think Tank program for senior buyers in its Meridian Club. ITE EXHIBITIONS LOOKS AHEAD TO TRAVEL EVENTS IN KAZAKHSTAN Two large travel events are being organized by ITE Exhibitions in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism & Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Astana Leisure will take place September 28–30, 2010, in Astana; and KITF is planned for April 20–22, 2011. Astana Leisure brings together 60 companies and 5,000 trade visitors. This year will be the seventh edition of the event. Since becoming Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana has become a major business hub and the country’s political center, generating over $5 billion of investments. KITF is Kazakhstan’s largest international travel and tourism exhibition, featuring 500 companies from 36 countries. Over ten years, the event has seen enormous growth and now welcomes an impressive 20,000 visitors. It takes place in Kazakhstan’s commercial center Almaty. Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world. According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Tourism & Sports, outbound tourism increased by 23 percent in 2009, generating a total of 3,687,000 Kazakh tourists. A Euromonitor report indicated the country has seen the emergence of an affluent middle class keen to travel out of the country, especially during the winter season. Online bookings are growing in Kazakhstan, particularly in its main cities of Almaty and Astana. In fact, online transactions for air travel are forecasted to record double-digit annual growth to 2013. INDUSTRY EVENTS ATTENDANCE AT CHTIC 2010 UP 18 PERCENT FROM 2009 The Official Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC 2010) welcomed “a very gratifying attendance of 349 delegates,â€? an 18-percent increase over the 296 attendees in 2009, according to Alec Sanguinetti, Director General and CEO of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA). The event was highlighted by a keynote address from Robert Crandall, former Chairman and CEO of AMR Corporation and American Airlines, in which he called for a new regional marketing campaign and the easing of on-island taxation of the hospitality and tourism sector. During CHTIC 2010 in Puerto Rico, CHTA announced the dates for the 15th Annual Official Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC 2011), which will be held May 10–12 in one of three Caribbean nations currently bidding to host the event. The annual conference draws hoteliers, developers, tourist office officials, lenders and others interested in Caribbean tourism. Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, president of CHTA, welcomed delegates on behalf of CHTA, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Puerto Rico Convention Bureau (PRCB), Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association (PRHTA) and Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), and then introduced a specially prepared video from former U.S. President Bill Clinton about the Haiti initiatives he and former U.S. President George W. Bush are spearheading. Puerto Rico Governor, the Honorable Luis FortuĂąo, also the former head of the PRTC, expressed his strong support for tourism as the leading generator of funds for the fragile economies of the Caribbean nations. Puerto Rico has been making a huge effort with marketing, promotions and investments, as witnessed by this state-of-the-art Convention Center which has enabled CHTA to have a variety of very successful conferences over the past few years. De Marchena noted that “While RevPAR and room rates are up as compared to 2009 levels, they are still down overall from 2008. The good news is that we can now safely say that from this point on, the tourism industry appears to be stabilizing. “Now is the time to invest in tourism, not when occupancy is high
and you can’t afford to close down wings of your property for expansion and renovation. Now is the time to look at the investment opportunities as it is crucial that we prepare for the return of the millions of visitors that traditionally vacationed in our nations. De Marchena concluded, “We need to turn the red tape into a red carpet and have the public and private sectors work together to succeed as we have done before. We need to do this now, while we have the opportunity to make a difference. Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA), www.caribbeanhotelandtourism.com

TAUCK OFFERS COMPLIMENTARY HOTEL NIGHTS WITH 2011 JOURNEYS Tauck is saying “thank you” to guests traveling on the company’s 2011 tours and cruises by extending their journey with up to two complimentary hotel nights. Tauck’s special “Gift of Time” offer, part of the company’s celebration of its 85th anniversary, applies to each of its nearly 100 land and cruise itineraries in 65 countries worldwide. To receive the complimentary nights, travelers must book their 2011 journeys during Tauck’s anniversary year of 2010. According to CEO Dan Mahar, “We wanted to mark our anniversary with a significant gesture that had deeper meaning and more intrinsic value than a simple cash savings,” said Mahar. “For 85 years our guests have chosen Tauck because we deliver superior travel experiences. We ultimately realized that the most meaningful way to say thank you was to provide our guests with ‘more’ of what they came to us for in the first place… In other words, more access and more opportunity to connect with the world’s most engaging cultural destinations.” Tauck’s “Gift of Time” program provides greater consideration to guests who have traveled with the company in the past. Those guests can extend their 2011 journey with two complimentary hotel nights added to either the beginning or the end of their Tauck journey (or they can add a single complimentary hotel night at both ends). New guests traveling with Tauck for the first time in 2011 will receive a single complimentary hotel night that can be used to extend either the beginning or end of their journey. The additional nights are offered at the same hotels already featured at the beginning or conclusion of Tauck’s journeys, and include complimentary airport transfers. Mahar noted that the value of the two-night stays, if arranged independently, could typically exceed $1,000 and that reservations at many of the properties are often difficult for independent travelers to secure because of their popularity. He went on to add that the Tauck offer also has the practical benefit of providing travelers with a chance to rest and adjust to the local time prior to their tour or cruise. Booking deadlines for the offer will vary by Tauck product category, and other restrictions also apply. Tauck, 800-468-2825, www.tauck.com
ARTA APPLAUDS NEW DOT PROPOSALS The Association of Retail Travel Agents (ARTA) has expressed its approval for the proposal of Secretary Ray LaHood and the U.S. Department of Transportation for widespread rule changes that protect air passenger rights and require more accountability of carriers. The broad range of consumer protections proposed by the DOT include: increased compensation for passengers involuntarily bumped from flights; full disclosure of fees, including baggage charges’ refunding of fees if baggage is late or lost; allowing consumers to make and cancel a reservation within 24 hours without penalty; fair price advertising; timely notice of flight status changes; and prohibition of price increase after tickets are purchased. The announcement shows aggressiveness in protecting the traveling public, said ARTA Chairman Barry Richcreek. “Fair treatment is a pretty basic concept and it’s a shame it has to be mandated.” The rules would take effect 180 days after a 60-day public comment period. ost-conscious families should consider Downtown Cleveland and its East and West neighborhoods for their “staycation.” Ohio’s second largest city is located on Lake Eire and draws visitors from a 500-mile radius. Add in Sandusky, which is an hour away, for water sports, Kalahari Resorts and the mammoth Cedar Point Amusement Park to complete the package. The Positively Cleveland CVB calculates a three-day weekend costs a family 30 – 65 percent less than in cities such as Philadelphia or New York. Included attractions are a city bus/trolley tour, world-class science center and zoo, museums and a mid-scale, full service hotel. A ten-attraction Cleveland Plus Pass offers additional savings. Hotels with family-friendly packages have tickets to preferred attractions, pools, kids-eat-free deals and more, all of which can be found at www.positivelycleveland.com/visiting/accommodations. Hotel and most venues honor travel agent commissions.
Kid-Friendly Downtown Cleveland For pure Americana, attend a Cleveland Indians baseball game at Progressive Field. Sundays “Kids Fun Day” takes over the Plaza outside Gate A with activities until the fifth inning. The entire game experience is for and about kids, often ending with allowing them to run the bases. A $52 family package includes four seats, four hot dogs and sodas. Quicken Loans Arena is home to the Cavaliers basketball team, Cleveland Gladiators, plus year-round concerts such as Lady Gaga and family shows. BuildYour-Own Packages (one-day tickets are $29 for hotel guests) guarantee park access one hour before the public enters. Great Wolfe Lodge focuses on families, especially with small children, with a variety of room styles, some with children’s “wolf dens” for sleeping, arcade/game rooms, fitness rooms, themed restaurants, spas, supervised children’s activities and more. All rooms have a refrigerator, microwave, iron, coffeemaker and hair dryer. Great Wolf Lodge resorts are the first and only national hotel chain to earn the “Green Seal” distinction. Even take-out utensils are made from recycled potato waste. Project Green Wolf includes children’s environmental learning programs, developed in partnership with National Geographic Kids.
Kalahari Resort and Safari Outdoor Adventure Park Kalahari has America’s largest indoor waterpark, 884 rooms, a massive arcade, shops and an authentic African theme thanks to its owner’s yearly artifact hunt in Africa. This year's expansion is Safari Outdoor Adventure Park that has four 200-400-feet zip lines above an African village with a towering rope course and rock-climbing wall. The mini-zoo includes giraffes, zebras and smaller animals to feed. Attractions of special note in Sandusky are Ghostly Manor Thrill Center with its high-tech, animatronics haunted house; a skating rink, arcade, XD Motion Theatre, plus a MeTV kiosk for sending video postcards. The scare level can be adjusted but the haunt is not recommended for children under ten. A tamer experience is at the Merry-Go-Round Museum that has a working carousel, 35 displayed figures and “painted ponies” wood carvers on site. An assemblage of calliopes, monkey organs, large Wurlitzers and a French Gavioli fairground organ will help celebrate the museum's 20th anniversary on July 17-18, 2010.

Domestic and international flights connect Fairbanks to the world. Newly expanded Fairbanks International Airport is modern, up-to-date and friendly. A variety of shuttles, rental cars, taxis and bus service make it easy to get around the “Golden Heart” city. Fairbanks is the gateway to Alaska’s vast Interior and expansive Arctic. Auto rentals, air and ground transportation, guided ecotours, fishing and boat charters and wildlife tours can be arranged through professional outfitters. Fairbanks makes an excellent base camp as travelers visit rural villages, see caribou migrations and polar bears, hike in rugged mountains, float mighty rivers and fly-fish remote streams. Denali, North America’s highest peak known also as Mt. McKinley, dominates Denali National Park and Preserve when visible. Accessible by a two-hour drive or four-hour train trip from Fairbanks, the park covers six million acres of pristine wilderness including crystal clear rivers, mountain lakes and expansive tundra. Along the way one can spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves, or any of hundreds of species. ALASKA AIRLINES TOPS J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES SATISFACTION RANKINGS FOR THIRD YEAR
Deep inside Alaska, Fairbanks emanates light, energy and warmth; its northern lights shine brightly much of the year, and in summer the midnight sun gives an energy boost. No longer a little mining town, Fairbanks today provides a full range of activities, top-rated attractions, sports, diverse dining options, shopping, year-round events and multi-cultural experiences while it retains its warmth and friendliness. Alaska’s second largest city, Fairbanks has been the heartbeat of Interior Alaska for over a hundred years. Fairbanks citizenry is nearly 98,000 when including the surrounding Fairbanks North Star Borough. As the gathering place on the banks of the Chena River, Fairbanks is home to many cultures, a vibrant arts community, sporting and outdoor enthusiasts, and America’s “Arctic University.” Historic log cabins mingle with award-winning modern designs. One may just as easily see a dog team as an elegant limousine. A variety of accommodations featuring over 3,800 rooms, from modern hotels with wireless Internet to rooms sculpted from ice, are available. 14 • JULY 2010
Alaska Airlines was ranked highest in airline customer satisfaction among traditional network carriers for the third consecutive year by J.D. Power and Associates in its 2010 North America Airline Satisfaction Study. The airline also topped J.D. Power and Associates’ annual rankings in 2008 and 2009. “Receiving this honor for the third year in a row is a testament to not only our operational focus on running a safe, efficient, on-time airline, but also to our talented and dedicated employees, who have continually worked to deliver on our customer promises,” Alaska’s President Brad Tilden said. Alaska Airlines ranked high in six of the study’s seven measures, including boarding/deplaning/baggage service and fees. Alaska is the only U.S. carrier to offer a Baggage Service Guarantee, after implementing baggage service fees last year. The Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 12,300 passengers who flew on a major North American airline between April 2009 and April 2010. The study measures overall customer satisfaction based on performance in seven measures (in order of importance): cost and fees; flight crew; in-flight services; aircraft; boarding/deplaning/baggage; check-in; and reservation. Traditional network carriers are defined as airlines that operate multi-cabin aircraft and use multiple airport hubs. Alaska Airlines, www.alaskaair.com www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

The German Travel Mart (GTM) held in April in Mainz and Frankfurt am Main turned out to be a major success for the organizer, the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) and the host cities of Mainz and Frankfurt, despite the transportation disruption due to volcanic ashes blocking Europe’s airspace. Health and fitness as well as medical tourism will take the limelight on Germany’s tourism stage in 2011 with 125 Years of the Automobile, the FIFA Soccer Women’s World Cup and the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt playing important supporting roles. GNTB’s three-pronged health and fitness approach includes spas and health resorts, wellness and beauty hotels and medical tourism. The campaign will showcase Germany’s modern and cutting-edge facilities, luxury hotels, spas and spa-towns, and also highlight top clinics for international patients as well as the tourist attractions nearby. In the special segment of medical tourism German clinics are renowned for their excellent quality and reasonable prices, already treating 70,000 international clients per year. While 2010 is a stunning year in Germany with such fascinating events from the Ruhr2010 as the European Capital of Culture, the 300th anniversary of porcelain in Meissen, the 41st Passion Play in Oberammergau and the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest, next year promises to be no less exciting. One highlight will be the 125th anniversary of the automobile in Germany, celebrating the first car invented by Carl Benz in 1886. During the summer of next year, the state of BadenWuerttemberg, home to Mercedes to Porsche, will celebrate with 125 days of events. Another big event will be the Women’s Soccer World Cup from June 26 to July 17. The event will be held in nine German cities with the opening ceremony in Berlin and the final in Frankfurt. Also in 2011, Germany will celebrate the 200th birthday of one of composer Franz Liszt. While born in Hungary, Liszt spend some of his most productive years in the cultural center of Weimar in Thuringia, also home to Goethe, Schiller Bach. Liszt died in the Wagner-town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria. Over 200 events throughout Germany are planned with one of the highlights being the “Liszt Festival” in Weimar from June 23 to July 9, 2011. EUROPE EUROPEAN WATERWAYS LAUNCHES NEW USER-FRIENDLY WEBSITE A new website has been launched by European Waterways that is designed to make it easier for visitors to navigate, allowing them to search for their hotel barging voyage by cruise area, by barge, or by cruise type. It’s also been made it more straightforward to check availability and cruise rates, request a brochure, or look at Special Offers. There are some attractive offers currently, including 25 percent off full boat charters on some hotel barges for June through September 2010. For example, a family or group of friends can charter the spacious 12-passenger L’Impressionniste, to cruise through the vineyards of Southern Burgundy, so that three passengers go free. Or maybe they’d prefer to charter the eight-passenger Scottish Highlander, which cruises the Great Glen in the Highlands, for some ‘Nessie spotting’ using the barge’s sonic fish finder—and with the discount two go free. There are also great cabin discounts through August 2010 on many other hotel barge cruises detailed on the site. European Waterways also produces its own newsletter—The Lock-Keeper, which includes a variety of stories about the barges and crews, a reader competition, and other news on the website. ICELAND DUSTS OFF WELCOME MAT FOR VOLCANO TOURISTS
In May, Tallinn successfully hosted the ‘Meet Estonia 2010’ fam trip, the first event of its kind ever held in the Baltic nation. Organized jointly by the Estonian Convention Bureau and the Estonian Tourist Board, the project involved inviting 50 professional event planners from all parts of Europe to visit Tallinn, where they were shown what Estonia has to offer as a meeting destination. Highlights of the program included a tour of Tallinn’s haunted houses led by the country’s former prime minister, Mart Laar, also a renowned historian; a visit to the nowdecommissioned Soviet-era Patarei Prison, one of the country’s more unusual incentive venues; a baroque concert in the18th-century Kadriorg Palace and a village-style party at the Estonian Open Air Museum. Participants also had the opportunity to attend workshops with local suppliers and take post-event tours of Lahemaa National Park and Estonia’s university town Tartu. Riine Tiigi, Managing Director of the Estonian Convention Bureau, hailed the event as a success and said the response from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Iceland Tourism officials say they are “dusting off the welcome mat,” as day-to-day life returns to normal after its Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption. Roadways in the south previously closed to tour buses are open, flights remain on schedule, and all airports operational. Tour operators have been amending cancellation policies and Icelandair was commended in the media for their swift, efficient re-routing of North American flights. For a while during the volcanic event, you couldn’t turn on the news or watch a comedy show without seeing a reference to Iceland’s virtually unpronounceable volcano and its once-in-a-lifetime eruption. On one day alone, there were over 16,000 news stories about the eruption, according to a Google search. Today sent Al Roker over to cover it, and a Saturday Night Live skit imagined Bjork singing to Eyjafjallajökull. Icelanders were amused by the media’s attempts to simply pronounce the volcano. For the record, Icelanders say it like this: EY-ya-fyat-lah-YO-kull. “As a result of the worldwide attention, volcano tourism has become, if you’ll excuse the expression, ‘explosively’ popular,” commented Einar Gustavsson, director of the Iceland Tourist Board based in New York. Following is a sample of tour operators ready to show the sights. Iceland on Track’s South-Shore, Waterfalls and Glacier Tour explores the area around the volcano. The tour heads to the scenic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and also drives to the black beach on the way to Skogafoss waterfall, the great cliffs of Dyrholaey, and Reynisdrangar. Nordic Tours is offering several day tours centered on viewing the volcano, via helicopter, Super Jeep, mini bus or even snowmobile. Iceland Excursions’ nine-hour Blue Ice tour (AH117) includes a four-hour guided hike to a frozen glacial tongue called Sólheimajökull, just a few miles from the volcano. The trip includes a beginner’s lesson in ice climbing, with all necessary equipment and instructions. Iceland Total is offering three-night volcano vacations with guided or self-guided options for as long as the volcano remains active. Reykjavik Excursions transports visitors to the eruption site via Super Jeep, helicopter, snowmobile or bus; some tours combine bus rides with other vehicles. Iceland’s travel DVD or printed brochure is available free by emailing the Tourist Board; the DVD can be viewed online, and the brochure is downloadable. This is the first visit of a President of the Dominican Republic to the organization. Welcoming the President, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai congratulated the progress made by the Dominican Republic as a leading tourism destination and the way it has maximized the positive contribution of tourism for its entire population. CARIBBEAN NORTH AMERICA NOW MAIN SOURCE OF VISITORS TO ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA For the first time since the global recession, the twin islands of Antigua and Barbuda have seen a turnaround in stay-over visitor arrivals, with 26,030 tourists coming in March 2010, representing a 12-percent increase over the same period last year. Year-todate stay-overs are now at 71,238—1.2-percent over 2009’s figures. These first-quarter results show an increase in stay-over arrivals from four of the destination’s six major source markets: USA, Canada, Italy and Germany. With the most significant increase coming out of the United States and Canada, North America has emerged as the main source market for Antigua and Barbuda. Minister of Tourism John Maginley is extremely pleased with the results and commented, “The destination’s focus on increasing airlift from the USA has proven to be right on target. We want to ensure that the cost of travel to the destination remains competitive to allow us to deliver more value”. Mrs. Derede Samuel Whitlock, USA Tourism Director, attributes this positive trend to a significant increase in airlift that the country has secured from key North American gateways. Stay-over arrivals from the USA during the first quarter of 2010 stood at 23,982, up eight percent over last year; the increase in seat capacity was largely driven by aggressive marketing efforts of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourist Board. She went on to cite capacity increases with American Airlines’ daily non-stop service from Miami, up to ten flights per week from Newark on Continental Airlines and additional service on Delta Airlines via JFK and Atlanta. The current growth in stay-over arrivals shows the destination has clearly turned the corner from 2009, where total stay-over arrivals stood at 234,410 a decline of 11 percent. During the same period the highest level of cruise ship arrivals ever to Antigua and Barbuda was recorded with 712,000 visitors, increasing 23 percent over 2008 arrivals. HOTEL BOCA CHICA REOPENS IN ACAPULCO, MEXICO The gorgeous Hotel Boca Chica reopened April 11 in sophisticated Acapulco. Showcased in the classic fifties Elvis movie ‘Fun in Acapulco’ during its opening shot, it’s a striking building where mid-century modern architecture seamlessly blends with the oldyacht neighborhood and service. “Acapulco is back sexier than ever! Amazing sunsets, great dining, a flirting nightlife and guaranteed sunshine year-round plus fabulous architecture, power yachts, glitz and a retro chic atmosphere,” said Carlos Couturier, Grupo Habitat Creative Force and Managing Partner. “All Grupo Habita is doing is bringing back to life an original hotel from the 1950s to make your visit a unique experience.” Clean lines and strong geometric forms throughout area are softened by a palette of vintage green, original terrazzzo floors, and subtle touches. The hotel boasts a private cove with its own dock. Arrival by water taxis at the Hotel Boca Chica lobby offers a spectacular prelude to the experience. The grand-entrance reception leads to a garden and ultimately to the large amoeba-shaped pool and grand restaurant housed in a palapa with views across to Roqueta Island—a natural reserve in Acapulco. The menu by Japanese Keisuke Harada consists of raw, fresh, inviting delights. An open-air bar appointed with concrete and wood umbrellas neighbors the amazing pool appointed with boulders all around the grounds where lounging by day is a must and candlelit celebrating by night a great experience. Hotel Boca Chica is a prime alternative for destination weddings, private events, and small conventions with facilities that even include its own club “Coco Wash.” Mexican contemporary artists Pedro Reyes designed the Floating Island, moored in the hotel’s sea cove and Gonzalo Lebrija’s whimsical oeuvre is showcased in the Club de Mar. LATIN AMERICA HACIENDA CUSIN’S EVOLUTION IN THE ECUADORIAN SIERRA
Hacienda Cusin evolved from an ancient (1602 A.D.) ambient ruin in 1990 to a highly respected hotel and restaurant. This evolution includes sister hotel Las Palmeras Inn and private houses for rent or sale. The 400-year-old property’s restoration respected the tradition of an Ecuadorian hacienda—a ‘country house’ with a family-of-38 staff. Generous public spaces and guest rooms are furnished with antiques and selected Andean crafts. Cusin’s famous, several-acre gardens of year-round flowering perennials—including palms, bourgainvilleas, orchids, agapanthas, foxgloves, and more—envelop individually-designed garden cottages, guest rooms and suites, several with Moorish balconies. Cusin’s elegant restaurant and its staff of 15 including three chefs serve organic, traditional food including fresh fruits and juices, vegetables and fish and luscious desserts. Hospitality includes a complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi, optional log-fires and hot-water bottles, use of games rooms, squash and volleyball and basketball courts, a children’s play area and valley and mountain walks. A cinéma/moviehouse and conference facilities are nearby. Activities also include horse riding, mountain biking, valley and mountain walks, birding, excursions to nearby Otavalo markets and craft villages, fine local restaurants, and a cloud forest lodge. The average guest stay is four nights. Cusin and Quito airports are north of Quito. Direct transfers save time and avoid traffic congestion. Guests may request a transfer by email. Magnificently conserved Spanish colonial Quito is 90 minutes way. The Galapagos Islands, Amazon and cloud forest lodges are within a half-day’s journey. Results are particularly impressive given the growth registered during theses challenging times,” said Mr. Rifai. “Tourism generated $1.4 billion in export earnings in Uruguay last year,” highlighted the Minister of Tourism and Sports of Uruguay, Héctor Lescano. “Tourism is a major generator of jobs and development for local communities,” he added. The meeting with President Mujica was another key opportunity to continue positioning tourism higher in the global agenda, a strategic objective for UNWTO in its aim to mainstream tourism. The visit to Uruguay follows meetings held by the Secretary-General with the Presidents of the Dominican Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain and Tajikistan. Mr. Rifai presented President Mujica the UNWTO Roadmap for Recovery, a strategic document aimed at raising awareness among decision makers of the contribution of tourism to job creation, economic growth and development. Mr. Rifai’s visit came a day before the Annual Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for the Americas and the UNWTO Executive Council (June 6–8 June, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina). LATIN AMERICA METROPOLITAN TOURING LAUNCHES NEW ART AND HISTORY TOUR OF QUITO
PROMOTING BOLIVIA IS THE MISSION OF CRILLON TOURS
Ecuador’s capital has been enjoying a renaissance to rival many cities. Its historic center—the largest and least-altered in the Americas—has benefited from $250 million in investment over the last decade. Its spectacular architecture and dramatic setting amid the high Andes convinced UNESCO to name it the first World Heritage Site city in 1978. Some three decades later, Quito is increasingly popular with foreign travelers, with numbers increasing every year. Visitors have been enjoying its regenerated historic heart, staying at new boutique hotels, dining in new restaurants and enjoying a number of fine museums. With its headquarters in Quito, Metropolitan Touring naturally organizes several tours of the city. Its newest—Quito, A Journey Through Art and History—follows a trail through the city that artloving visitors will be truly tempted to follow. The program explores three eras in the country’s history: the preColombian, the colonial and the contemporary. “We know and love our city well,” says Maria Cecilia Alzamora, Vice-President Incoming Tourism. “So this tour is close to many of our hearts.” The itinerary begins in the Old Town, with a visit to the newly opened Casa del Alabado museum, a world-class display of the cosmovision and artistic production of pre-Colombian man in Ecuador. The museum is housed within one of Quito’s oldest mansions, stunningly restored. A short walk from the museum rises the imposing church of La Compañía de Jesús, built by the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries and regarded by many as the finest example of Baroque on the continent, shining in extravagant gold leaf. After lunch, the itinerary switches to the contemporary art scene at the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man), the dream-child of Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín (1919-1999), considered among the great artists in Latin America. The large, striking structure pays homage to humanity through the artist’s powerful and at times harrowing expressionist canvasses. Metropolitan Touring, www.metropolitan-touring.com
Travelers have chosen Bolivia and Lake Titicaca as one of their favorite options in South America for its authenticity, fabulous gastronomy and gorgeous natural and cultural diversity. Crillon Tours is improving its Lake Titicaca infrastructure in piers as well as in both its hotels. At Posada del Inca on top of Sun Island, they’ve now installed a dash-board heating system, and added offers to the traditional ones, such as a trekking to the Sacred Rock and Chinkana Ruins, returning by Hydrofoil or motor boats, and embarking in a new pier below the ruins in the north side of the Island. In addition, there’s a journey from Copacabana to Yampupata, either by soft trekking or biking. There’s also an extension for visitors staying overnight at Sun Island, a half-day navigation tour to Moon Island to explore bucolic communities and have tea at a new viewpoint owned by an indigenous lady neighbor. The other Treasure Destination in Bolivia is the unique Uyuni Salt Flats, matching perfectly with Lake Titicaca Forever programs. Crillon has become top specialists in the route from La Paz and connections with Chile and Argentina. The company owns infrastructure in the community of Jirira, from which it’s possible to enjoy many activities such as biking, trekking to the foot of the Thunupa Volcano, and walking in the solitude of the Salt Flats. Words cannot describe the freedom felt when standing in the middle of the Flats. In Jirira, Crillon Tours has a joint venture project with Doña Lupe, a rustic lodge for the Travel Bag line and a “Glamping” program for the comfort of those adventure travelers wanting glamorous camping and gourmet cuisine. The company also offers the Salt Hotels in Colchane for a traditional program and en-route community project hotels with a Chile connection. Crillon Tours specializes in common projects with indigenous communities, following 21st-century Bolivian and the world humanist precept supporting the most vulnerable social groups. LATIN AMERICA HAMANASI BELIZE’S FIRST BEACHFRONT PROPERTY TO ACHIEVE GREEN GLOBE CERTIFICATION
Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort has earned the title of Belize’s first-ever Green Globe Certified beachfront property. Based in Hopkins, the eco-resort has been dedicated to operating at the world’s highest environmental standards since its inception in 2000. The Green Globe recognition is an epic benchmark in Belize’s steadfast effort to build itself as a responsible tourism destination. “In an effort to avoid the travel industry’s ‘green washing’ label, we felt passionately about being part of a program that was serious and reputable,” said Dana Krauskopf, owner of Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort. Hamanasi owners David and Dana Krauskopf’s number-one priority has been protecting the environment. Early on, they developed a mission statement to include commitment to the environment, which eventually evolved into Hamanasi’s eco-mission statement. That initial pledge to Mother Nature was followed by immediate implementation of hiring and developing local staff, keeping as much of the native plants and eco system as possible including an 11-acre nature reserve, and designing to ensure maximum natural light and air flow. As a part of Hamanasi’s education and engagement efforts, the Green Team is making plans to launch new guest education programs to include topics like the importance of being green and sustainable, background on wildlife and nature, Mayan history, and Belizean cultures. They’re also working on developing onsite displays providing information about the diverse eco-habitats on property, and have revealed an improved pond habitat, which serves as home base for crocodiles, turtles, fish and birds. I
’m lucky. I’ve been traveling to Taiwan since the early 1980s And since then, Taipei, along with Beijing and Shanghai, has changed even more than I have. Paris, with its tree-lined avenues and many parks, was the world’s first “Green City.” Taipei has caught up. In 2010, Taipei’s many broad avenues are also tree-lined. Taipei also has many parks. Almost every museum is in a park. The Peace Park is home to the Taiwan Museum. The Taipei Fine Arts Museum is in Taipei Art Park. Instead of revealing the National Palace Museum Taipei – with treasures from Beijing’s Forbidden City. “Greening of Taipei” boulevard by boulevard, I save time by taking my press groups up to the observatory of the attic. The heirlooms were there, but the presentation was not world’s second-tallest building, Taipei 101, where the entire up to international standards. TAIWAN
home, now a museum. It’s difficult to find an old temple remaining in Shanghai. Taipei has two dating from the 18th century – Longshan Temple and Boaon Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Shanghai and Beijing are well known for the colonial art and architecture left by many countries that had trading “concessions” in both cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, Taiwan’s colonial influences are unique – and older. Many people are under the false impressions that Taiwan is over-industrialized – and that before 1949 Taiwan was a deserted island. The Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and British had all settled the island by 1895. And their roots remain in the form of ruined forts scattered throughout Taiwan. Just outside Taipei is Danshui (reachable via MRT, Taipei’s modern Metro), with its Spanish Fort Domingo dating from 1629! There are perfectly preserved 19th-century British consulates in Danshui and Kaohsuing (Taiwan’s dynamic second city in the South). Taiwan has colonial art and architecture that’s unique in all the world. The Japanese colonized most of Asia in the 20th century. However, Taiwan was colonized by Japan as early as 1895. And there is much remaining majestic late 19th and early 20th-century Beaux Arts/Japanese Asian architecture (what I call “Japanese Colonial Architecture”) all over Taiwan. Taipei’s Presidential Office is an example of that unique Japanese Colonial Architecture – which is found only in Taiwan. One of the best examples is the government guest house (only a few blocks away) – combining Beaux Arts with Japanese turned-up eave roofs. (Many Japanese architects experimented with more flamboyant forms in Taiwan – something they could not do in conservative Japan.) If you love the Japanese city of temples – Kyoto – you’ll love Tainan – Taiwan’s city of temples. Tainan temples were founded as early as the 17th century by the royal exile, Koxinga, from China’s Qing Dynasty (yet another China tie-in). Taiwan is modern where it counts – infrastructure. A bullet train whisks you cross-country in just 90 minutes. It takes a half day just to get to China’s Three Gorges from Beijing. An equally gorgeous gorge is Taiwan’s Taroko Gorge, just 180 miles from Taiwan on the island’s east coast. As in southern Central America, you can be “bicoastal” in minutes. Taiwan’s natural beauty overwhelms. Relax in spas and natural hot springs across the island. Hike in mountain and lake trails. Sip tea just harvested from plantations. See natural rock formations sculpted over millenia by wind and sea on two coasts – Yeliu (north, near Taipei) and Xiaoyeliu (east). Taiwan’s hotels and resorts are first-rate. In the 1980’s the Grand Hyatt Taipei was a trailblazer in a deserted area. Today it’s the anchor of Taipei 101. (One of my favorite sweets for
Taipei 101 – the world’s second tallest building, but most beautiful.
noshing is free in most of their lounges – chocolate-covered cornflakes.) Taipei becomes even trendier and chicer later this year when its first W Hotel joins the other deluxe Starwood properties: the Westin, the Meridien (opening this fall) and the Sheraton, whose shopping arcade even includes a fine tailor. When Chiang Kai-shek came in 1949 – besides bringing art – he brought Shanghai tailors. Discover that Taiwan’s tailoring is as good as, if not better than, Hong Kong’s. Some of the best Chinese chefs came over with Chiang, making Taiwan’s Chinese food – according to many foodies – the best in the world. And because Taiwan is an island, you know fish dishes will be plentiful and fresh. And if you’re tired of Chinese food, remember that Taipei is an international city with food from all over the world. And if you get hungry after midnight – there are always Taipei’s renowned night markets. No matter what your desire – culture, food, nature, excitement, relaxation or shopping – you’ll find it in Taiwan. As they say about shopping, “Good things come in small packages.” The best vacations, likewise, come in small packages – notably the Island of Taiwan.

PACIFIC ASIA MALAYSIA’S LANGKAWI NAMED ONE OF ASIA’S TOP TEN ROMANCE DESTINATIONS BY TRIPADVISOR.COM
TripAdvisor.com, the world’s largest online travel community with more than 25 million monthly visitors, recently named the Malaysian island of Langkawi as one of its “Top Ten Romance Destinations” in all of Asia. As TripAdvisor notes, Pulau Langkawi, the largest of 99 beautiful tropical islands in the Langkawi archipelago, drifts serenely in the azure Andaman Sea just off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Known as the “Legendary Island” because of the many intriguing myths associated with its ancient geological formations, its beautiful views, forested hills, romantic white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters are just a few of the reasons Langkawi has become a rising star among Southeast Asia’s island destinations. TripAdviosr.com recommends visitors ‘sample local cuisine at the night markets, hike to dramatic waterfalls or dive into an underwater marine park to take a guided glimpse at life beneath the sea.” Other sightseeing options abound including a jaw-dropping cable car ride to the top of Mat Cincang Mountain, Langkawi’s second tallest peak, rated five stars on TripAdvisor.com. With an abundance of flora and fauna, visitors can tour the island’s beautiful parks and gardens or simply pack a picnic lunch and hike to Langkawi’s spectacular waterfalls for a romantic and relaxing afternoon. An excellent choice of accommodations is available, from simple beach retreats to luxurious five-star hotels. Tropical climate with the annual temperature averaging 90 degrees provides the perfect getaway year round. The Langkawi islands are a part of the state of Kedah, and are therefore known as the “Jewel of Kedah.” Malaysia is continuously featured among top destinations by travel experts across the globe. Others of its recent accolades incclude Top 10 Country for 2010 by Lonely Planet, Kuala Lumpur proclaimed one of the world’s “coolest and friendliest cities” by the New York Times. forces in World War II in hopes of having them return for the island’s 66th Liberation Day festivities this year. Many veterans already in the GVB database have been sent letters, but others are being sought to join in the traditional island parade and celebration on July 21. “We would like another opportunity to thank these brave men for the courage and heroism they displayed so long ago,” said GVB General Manager Gerald S.A. Perez. “It would be a unique opportunity for them to return to Guam and see how much our island has changed since 1944. NEW LAUNCH SEE INDIA DIFFERENTLY TAKES TRAVELERS TO UNDISCOVERED GEMS IN STYLE An avid traveler, Mumbai resident Mark Trayling was always surprised at how little most people knew about India, the place of his heritage. “I grew up in Australia, visiting my grandparents in Bombay every summer,” said the former PricewaterhouseCoopers consultant. “They showed me the real India, but it’s not something I saw reflected in the typical India itinerary.” Geared to globetrotters who crave experiential travel yet also want to journey in luxury, See India Differently customizes itineraries that tap into the country’s undiscovered resources and prescreens all vacation offerings to ensure holidays are to exacting standards. The company explores many of India’s special treasures. Its finest relaxation spas include Ananda in the foothills of the Himalayas, rated the best spa in the world three years consecutively, and the Oberoi Wildflower at Shimla, which Life magazine’s book “Dream Destinations: 100 of the World’s Best Vacations” ranked first in the “Top 10 Romantic Destinations in the World.” The Andaman Islands reveal long stretches of clear blue water and pristine white sand, encircled in forest. Andaman Islands’ Radha Nagar beach on Havelock Island was named Beach Best in Asia by Time in 2004 and Conde Naste Traveller described the Andaman Islands as having “unearthly perfection.” Escape to another world. Himalayan adventures such as heliskiing offer excitement in the highest mountain range in the world. Wine lovers delight in Nashik, one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the world, where they may enjoy an intimate glimpse at the grape cultivation process. Kanha National Park is one of many places rich in wildlife—the Indian Big Five: tigers, leopards, elephant, buffalo and rhino. This Park was the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
