Dominican Republic’s DATE 2011 Draws Impressive Turnout
Celebrating 12th year, this show is proving to be a DATE to remember for the industry.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana hosted DATE 2011.
ATE 2011, the 12th edition of the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE), was held April 27–29 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. The very successful event registered 2,872 pre-scheduled appointments between buyers and suppliers. In addition to this, an immeasurable amount of unscheduled appointments were held, making it a great opportunity for everyone involved. This was the best DATE ever in terms of buyers, suppliers and interest—a great turnout. Suppliers included 95 companies/345 delegates and Buyers were 108 companies/176 delegates. The media was represented by seven companies, 11 delegates. Opening night was at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Caribbean Night was held at Barceló Bávaro Beach Resort. The essential DATE The Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) was created to provide a professionally organized business exchange between Tour Operators, International Travel Agents and Dominican Republic’s leading tourism suppliers. The idea came in response to the need that existed in the Dominican touristic sector of having an event based exclusively on the country’s existing offer where international buyers and 4 • JUNE 2011
suppliers of the touristic product could meet and define joint business strategies. DATE is conceived and organized by the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism. Its first edition was in the year 2000 and since then each version has shown the evolution of the event itself and the position achieved by the Dominican tourism sector at international levels. DATE has seen annual increases in the number of countries represented by Tour Operators interested in selling the DR product. This event is also an excellent means for promoting the location (for tourism) where the tradeshow is celebrated. DATE has been hosted by Santo Domingo, La Romana, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. The magnificent facilities of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Convention Center as this year’s venue fittingly endorse the authority DATE has claimed reaching its twelfth year. With more than 200 companies participating, including buyers, suppliers and sponsors, this reveals significant growth in Tour Operators visiting from South America. Furthermore, coverage by over 70 media representatives coming from the United States, Europe, Latin America, Germany and of course, the local press, gave DATE 2011 professional marketing it has earned. DATE has indeed established itself as ‘The official event for the Dominican Tourism.’ It has become the mandatory date for those who bet on the country’s tourism potential.

ITB Asia, the annual three-day B2B trade show and convention now in its fourth year, will be held at the Suntec Singapore Exhibition & Convention Centre October 19–21. According to data gathered by the US Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI), visitors to the US from Asia increased 24 percent from 2009 to over seven million in 2010. Of the top 25 inbound countries, four of them were in Asia, all posting double-digit increases in 2010—most notably China, with a 53-percent increase and South Korea with a 49-percent increase. International visitors spent an estimated $134.4 billion on US travel and tourism-related goods and services in 2010, an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous year. Asian visitors to Canada have seen a strong gain in 2011 over 2010. In January alone, visits from China increased 37 percent over the year before, and South Korea had a nine-percent increase in that same month. Show details are available on the official website. Unicomm has announced the addition of the Atlanta Travel & Adventure Show to its consumer show series. The inaugural event will take place October 22–23 at Atlanta’s Cobb Galleria. The Atlanta Travel & Adventure Show will round out the six existing shows in the prominent series of consumer travel expos. “Being the nation’s seventh largest city, we are pleased that Atlanta will offer our exhibitors the ability to reach a new audience of high-income consumers in the Southeast,” states John Golicz, CEO of Unicomm. “It is a market we’ve been watching for a number of years and, now, the timing is right for us with consumer confidence and travel bookings on the rise. Atlanta also is home to the world’s busiest airport, which makes the show location ideal for many of our domestic and worldwide destinations and tour operators,” Golicz added. Dubrovnik Welcomes Tourism Professionals to First Annual NETM
I
nternational Event Management Firm William H. Coleman, Inc. and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board welcomed 150 Leisure Travel “Buyers” and “Suppliers” to the first annual New Europe Travel Mart (NETM) at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa April 13–15. The new tourism sales/business development event is designed to increase leisure travel to the region from the Baltic to the Balkans referred to as “New Europe.” NETM’11 was a good start to a long-term opportunity for travel professionals to increase business in this very special part of the world. Over 1,300 business appointments were already pre-scheduled when participants arrived in Dubrovnik, and many reported they were able to add additional meetings during the business sessions. The opportunity for personal meetings between dedicated “Buyers” and “Suppliers” in an organized and professional environment is just one benefit of this format used for NETM. Hospitality and support received from The Dubrovnik Tourist Board, The Croatian National Tourist Board, and The Dubrovnik & Neretva County Tourist Board all helped make the event successful. The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa facilities and service were excellent, with reliable ground transportation and transfers provided by Korkyra Travel. Both operations should be remembered when preparing Dubrovnik and Croatia product plans.
Winning format works The unique three-day “pre-scheduled appointments” format used at NETM is one that Coleman has successfully applied in other global tourism destinations for almost forty years. “Buyers” of Leisure Travel services from global markets meet senior sales and marketing executives representing “Supplier” organizations from the “New Europe” region. Prescheduled 20-minute appointments in Supplier booth/offices take place during the two days of business sessions. In April, 561 of these appointments were “Perfect Match” appointments where both Buyers and Suppliers requested to meet each other; 307 of the appointments were “Buyer Requests;” and 509 of them “Supplier Requests.” “Buyers” are “decision makers” from companies and organizations that can “contract and book” group, FIT, and special interest travel products from markets in the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, Chile, France, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Venezuela. The Brazil Airline TAM worked with William H. Coleman, Inc. to bring a large group of Buyers from Brazil, one of the fastest growing tourism markets in the world. “Suppliers” are experienced sales executives representing 6 • JUNE 2011
Serious travel professionals show interest in “New Europe.” hotels, airlines, cruise companies, receptive operators, car rental firms, attractions, resorts, tourist boards, city and convention bureaus, and promotional organizations from Croatia, Albania, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Montenegro, Lithuania, and Montenegro. Buyers made a significant financial investment to attend, including paying a $175 registration fee (for business sessions, social functions, accommodations/transfers) plus arranging their own air. Suppliers paid $975 for this and their booth/office. One reason Dubrovnik was chosen for the venue was the strong support NETM received from the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, joined by the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Dubrovnik & Neretva County Tourist Board (DubrovnikRiviera & Islands). DTB Director Jelka Tepsic stated, “We believe this will help us all to promote Dubrovnik and Croatia, and to also focus attention on ‘New Europe.’” Event organizers invested several years of market research before launching the inaugural NETM in Dubrovnik. INDUSTRY EVENTS ATTA ANNOUNCES BILL RICHARDSON’S PARTICIPATION IN 2011 WORLD SUMMIT Governor Bill Richardson will be the closing keynote speaker at the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s (ATTA) Adventure Travel World Summit themed ‘Prosper with Purpose’ set for October 20 in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Known for his work as a diplomat and special envoy on sensitive missions to win the release of hostages, American servicemen and prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, Cuba and Sudan, Richardson has recently founded the Richardson Peace Institute which will train government entities in peacekeeping and hostage negotiations. “Throughout my travels in the effort of diplomacy worldwide, it has become clear that connecting on a basis of a sense of place can be a lynchpin for creating peace,” said Richardson, who served as Governor of New Mexico between 2002 and 2010. Richardson’s talk will be about the potential for peace through the development of adventure tourism. An avid outdoorsman, Richardson was known during his tenure for his horsemanship and as a keen marksman. His embrace of all things Western, his progressive policies on clean energy, the development of a powerful film industry, and other issues such as education and health care made him one of the state’s most popular governors. He will address the group in both English and Spanish. Chiapas was chosen due to its partnership orientation and readiness and willingness to press forward on progressive adventure tourism development. Additionally, it was identified as having potential benefits to the local tourism economy and ATTA members worldwide. As the 2011 cherry blossom season ends in many Japanese cities including Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya and Hiroshima, Blossom Japan, a Lucioles event, is preparing its second event next year. The City of Kyoto will welcome Blossom Japan 2012 February 13–16, allowing participants to discover the “real Japan” experience. WESTJET IS 240TH AIRLINE TO SIgN IET AgREEMENT WITH HAHN AIR Hahn Air has now activated interline e-ticketing (IET) with WestJet Airlines Ltd. Hahn Air has extended its e-ticketing platform with WestJet, Canada’s second-largest carrier. PORTER DOUBLES SUMMER TREMBLANT FLIgHTS Porter Airlines is doubling summer Mont Tremblant service, with up to four flights weekly between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and Mont Tremblant International Airport. The Legacy of Malta’s Three Cities

ottonera commonly referred to as the Three Cities, namely Vittor-iosa, Senglea and Cos-picua, forms an integral part of the Grand Harbour conurbation facing Valletta, Malta’s capital city. Although each of these towns has its own specific identity, the Three Cities have collectively been interlinked due to their common history and unique topography of land peninsulas bordering sheltered inlets set within the environs of the Grand Harbour. When the knights of the Order of St John were offered Malta in fiefdom by Emperor Charles V in 1530, the maritime town of Vittoriosa was the natural choice for the knights to establish their base. The Order of St John relied heavily on its fleet of galleys and other maritime craft and securing a safe haven was a determining factor in the selection of Vittoriosa as its first home base. The small town set on a peninsula offered excellent berthing facilities. Furthermore, the old medieval Castello a Mare or Castrum Maris, today referred to as Fort Saint Angelo, provided the starting point for setting an elaborate network of military defences. The knights built their first auberges or hostels within Vittoriosa. Initially their intention was to isolate themselves from the rest of the native population by creating a segregated collachio as they had done when based in Rhodes. However, given the densely populated urban fabric, the knights found it almost impossible to displace the local inhabitants to impose the collachio model and they soon abandoned their original plan. Fort St Angelo at the tip of the Vittoriosa peninsula became the seat of the Grand Master of the Order. It was to play a heroic role during the Great Siege of 1565. From its ramparts Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette directed all the major battles fought between the knights and the Maltese against the Ottoman Turks. It was from the fort’s cavalier that a shot aimed at the enemy camp in Sliema point caused the death of Dragut, the feared leader of the Turks’ elite corps. After the victory of the Great Siege, the project of establishing a new city to be called Valletta assumed a high priority in order to better repel any future Turkish invasion. The knights transferred their base from Vittoriosa to Valletta in 1571. Still, the former town continued to play an important role for the Order as it hosted its arsenal, ship-building and ship-repair yards and a waterfront lined with Baroque palaces and warehouses that flourished during the late seventeenth century. The other two towns were Senglea and Cospicua. Senglea was founded by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle on the land peninsula opposite Vittoriosa towards the end of the sixteenth century. Cospicua was developed as a densely populated town at the neck of the inlet of the creek then referred to as Porto delle Galere, or as it is known today as Dockyard Creek. The knights embarked on building highly elaborate fortifications

Besides the land-front fortifications to Vittoriosa and Senglea, the entire Three Cities were encircled by the massive Margherita and Cottonera fortifications that were built during the late seventeenth century to secure a virtually impregnable line of imposing defense works. To this day the fortified urban enclave of Cottonera represents one of the finest examples of fortified cities in the world. During the nineteenth century the British colonial authorities established H.M. Victualling Yard and an extensive network of Drydocks and ship-repair facilities to service the British navy. Malta had become a highly strategic naval station and military base at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea. The Three Cities continued to increase their resident population as many sought employment at the dockyards or with the Navy. One of the finest architectural developments in the mid-18th century was the construction of the Naval Bakery building which supplied tack or dry biscuits to the whole British fleet within the Mediterranean. Today, the former Naval Bakery has been transformed into a Maritime Museum which displays several artifacts testifying to the town’s centuries-old connection to maritime events. The Second World War had a catastrophic impact on the Three Cities. During 1942-43, Malta was severely bombed by the German Axis forces and Cottonera suffered the brunt of most of these aerial attacks given its location within the Grand Harbour and the dockyards. A number of historic buildings and monuments in Vittoriosa were destroyed, Senglea was virtually reduced to a heap of rubble and Cospicua’s dense urban fabric was also severely affected. Anticipating the oncoming onslaught, most of Cottonera’s residents had prior to the war sought safe refuge in the outlying rural areas as far as possible CONTINUED ON PAGE

from the Grand Harbour conurbation. The extent of the war damage was severe with the loss of thousands of houses. In the aftermath of the war, most of the former residents rendered homeless relocated elsewhere. The population of Cottonera was drastically and irretrievably reduced to its pre-war levels. In spite of its glorious history, the Cottonera region degenerated into a socially depressed area with some neighborhoods characterized by poverty and substandard housing. Fortunately over the past two decades there has been a sustained interest in the urban regeneration of the Three Cities. A number of historic palaces along the Vittoriosa waterfront were restored to their original splendor, the Order of St John established its seat in the upper precincts of Fort St Angelo and recently the world-renowned firm Camper & Nicholsons has taken over the management of a new yacht marina along thewaterfront. There are other urban regeneration projects in the pipeline and certainly more needs to be done. Still, it is comforting to note that the renaissance of the Three Cities is well on its way.

MEETINg INDUSTRY TOURISM IN BARCELONA REgAINS NUMBERS The Turisme de Barcelona (Barcelona Tourism Office) recently presented last year’s statistics for the professional tourism industry at the annual assembly of its Barcelona Convention Bureau (BCB). The assembly was held at the meetings facility L’Acadèmia, and attended by 200 professionals from the sector. All in all, it was concluded that 2010 proved a fruitful year for meetings and incentives. Conventions and incentives were largely impacted by the worldwide economic crisis. With the recent recovery being experienced in the US in particularly, all destinations alike have regained the ground they had lost during the past two years. For Barcelona, 2010 has reaped great numbers from the North America market—the market has grown by over 35 percent in 2010 from 2009. Additionally, the North American market represents 20 percent of the international market and the US market is the second international market beyond the UK. Currently in Barcelona, the international market represents 59.5 percent of business, while the local Spanish market share is 38.5 percent. In 2010, Barcelona hosted 2,138 meetings representing 616,833 delegates. The number of professional meetings held last year in the Catalan capital was up 15.1 percent over the 2009 figures. Consequently, the increase in the number of meetings drove the number of delegates who attended meetings in Barcelona, a whole 7.1 percent over the previous year’s figures. The increase in the number of meetings for Barcelona was mainly the result of the spike in the number of international conventions and incentives, which represented 18.8 percent of the overall number of meetings. 14 • JUNE 2011

FINNAIR TO OFFER SUMMER RATES TO 21 EUROPEAN DESTINATIONS Finnair will offer special rates for summer travel to 21 cities in Europe. Finnair flies the shorter northern route via Helsinki, offering a fast and efficient connecting time for passengers traveling to Europe. Finnair’s summer rates between JFK International Airport and Europe will start at $776. Finnair will also open two new destinations including Murmansk in Northern Russia and Aarhuus in Denmark in cooperation with Sun-Air. Leisure flights to Malaga and Nice will change to a scheduled service during the summer session. In Helsinki’s compact terminal, designed especially for transfer traffic, Finnair operates one of the youngest fleets in Europe and offers several high-class lounges and a unique Finnair Spa. For business class passengers, Finnair’s new pre-order meal service has been extended to long-haul flights. Passengers can place a food order from two weeks before traveling up until 24 hours before departure. In 2009, Helsinki was appointed as the World Design Capital 2012. Direct services to other familiar summer destinations include Slovenia, Poland, Lisbon, and Pisa. CARIBBEAN bird of paradise offers ChanCe to reserve at 2010 rates
Travelers are being given the opportunity to take advantage of 2010 rates prior to a July 1, 2011, price increase at Anguilla’s Bird of Paradise, with 2010 prices applied to reservations made now for travel now through 2012. The Caribbean islands are taking an economic hit like other countries around the world, and having to take measures to balance budgets. In Anguilla, all hotels and villas will now have a six-percent “stabilization levy” imposed on all wages. Real estate taxes increased by 150 percent. On this 35-square-mile island where almost everything needs to be imported, duties that normally would be 26 percent are now 31 percent. Many tourists don’t realize that the hotels and villas pay a marketing levy for every guest. These fees doubled this past year. New taxes have been levied on communications
and fuel, the latter increasing the cost of electricity and water. Owners of the Bird of Paradise villa have made a conscious effort to keep rates low to ensure the villa is occupied frequently so the staff could earn a good living and work exclusively for the Bird of Paradise. Owner Melody Dill says clients and travel agents actually ask, “Why are the rates so low? What’s wrong?” since the Bird is priced way below other high-end villas on the island. Repeatedly ranked as one of the top villas in the world and recently recognized by Conde’ Nast, the Bird of Paradise is, indeed, a bargain. However, with increasing taxes and fees, the Bird will be forced to raise rates six percent as of July 1. Any reservations received for the remainder of the year or through 2012 will be at the current 2010 rates as long as the reservation is made by July 1, 2011. The Bird of Paradise offers families, groups, couples and honeymooners exclusive use of the villa. Two pools perched above a perfect crescent beach, four master suites and multiple living and dining areas offer lots of room to socialize as well as private space. On December 21, 2012, the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar will complete a 5,125-year cycle. There are various interpretations of this transition; 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era, the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. while off the beaten track, roatán in the honduras bay islands is no longer a deep caribbean secret kept only by a few scuba divers and ocean sailors. with over 800,000 cruise ship guest visits in 2010, more than double that of costa rica according to the bulletin of tourism statistics in central america, the secret is out. roatán is fast becoming the vacation destination of choice for anyone looking to chill out on an exotic caribbean island. beaches range from the vast white sand of popular west bay to the secluded clothing-optional coves of paya bay. accommodations are just as varied; there are condos, beach shacks, resorts and house rentals to match any taste or budget. fun things to do are everywhere. with an extensive and healthy coral reef system, scuba diving and snorkeling justly reign as major attractions but there’s enough fishing, sailing, kayaking, hiking, zip lines, horseback riding, shopping and dining to keep anyone entertained. and with the completion pete dye’s 18-hole black pearl last april, no one even needs to miss tee time. with change comes opportunity, and both local and international investors are jumping on the wagon. when cruise ships are in harbor, the road to mahogany bay is nose to tail with taxis offering tourist transportation. the familiar signs of wendy’s, applebees, and ace hardware are set back in modern shopping plazas and some of the big boxes have plans in the works or construction already underway. co-co view responds but bigger is not always better. roatán has plenty of small attractive properties adapting to the “new tourist” deluge. coco View resort, a dedicated scuba resort long famous for its extensive coral walls and snorkel reefs right out the front door, has recently stopped accepting cruise ship and day guests. “with strangers always on our beach and at the bar, and with our facilities in constant demand, we were afraid we wouldn’t feel like coco View anyTravel World News • www.travelworldnews.com
