INDUSTRY EVENTS AMERICAN TOURISM SOCIETY FALL CONFERENCE IN KOSOVO OCTOBER 25–29

ATA WILL HOLD ITS ANNUAL PRESIDENTIAL FORUM ON TOURISM THIS MONTH IN NYC

The American Tourism Society (ATS) has opened online registration for its Fall 2010 Annual Conference, taking place in Kosovo October 25–29. The conference will showcase three of Kosovo’s largest cities—Pristina, the capital and venue for the opening meetings; Peja, perhaps the nation’s most picturesque city and the location for this year’s ATS Tourism College and ATS Tourism Cares programs; and Prizren, offering an eclectic mix of Albanian, Ottoman, and Serbian cultural heritage. Following the Conference, there will be an optional two-night tour October 29–31 to neighboring Albania, which is, along with Kosovo, yet another “best-kept secret” for the American market with Tirana’s museums and the bazaar in Kruja. Kosovo forms a natural bridge between the European and Islamic cultures. The ancient history of this Balkan nation is the foundation for a new country with a bright and energetic future. Commented Conference Chair Jan Rudomina, ATS Vice President and member of the Executive Committee, “Kosovo as a tourist destination is a perfect example of the ATS mission, Presenting Tomorrow’s Destinations.” Conference registration, complete details of the dayto-day itinerary, and a conference agenda preview is available on the ATS website. American Tourism Society (ATS), www.americantourismsociety.org

On September 22, African leaders will participate in the Africa Travel Association’s Fifth Annual Presidential Forum on Tourism at New York University, 4–7 p.m., followed by a one-hour reception. The event will be held as part of the NYU-Africa House Conference of African Leaders on the occasion of the UN General Assembly meetings. With its mission strengthening partnerships between African nations and the global travel trade industry, the forum is an opportunity for leaders to put travel and tourism at the forefront of the international community’s agenda and on the industry’s event calendar. The ATA’s highest profile event in the U.S. offers Africa’s leaders an opportunity to speak about how tourism contributes to a country’s economy and development and to highlight the current challenges and future prospects each country faces in promoting the sector. At last year’s forum, ambassadors from Namibia, Tanzania, and Zambia, and ministers from Cameroon, Malawi, Mozambique, Zanzibar, as well as World Bank’s Vice President of the Africa Region participated. Martin County, The REAL Florida D A N B R YA N

DAN BRYAN

I

am sitting on a ten foot tall swamp buggy staring at a thousand pound water buffalo. He seems to be pondering whether to run over and stomp me or just continue grazing. Our swamp buggy pilot, Joe O’Bannon, has spent half his life guiding African big game hunts. He says these brutes aren’t quite as skittish as their cape buffalo cousins since they aren’t being hunted constantly by lions. But this guy doesn’t look too friendly to me. He has never felt a human hand. Joe is as authentic a character as you are likely to meet. Rancher, cowboy, African safari guide and proprietor of J&R Outfitters and Game Reserve, he could have come right out of central casting for a Hemingway movie. Except he’s the real deal and makes no apologies for it. He offers all sorts of hunting trips, nature and photography tours. Herds of exotic Asian and African deer and antelope roam free on four thousand acres of wild Florida. From upland quail to water buffalo to alligators, you can photograph it or shoot it, as your mood and sensibilities desire. And just like in Africa, O’Bannon is there to back you up with his .500 Nitro Express if you screw up.

It’s real, not Disney There is just no place like this in America. Even in these tight budget times, Florida has a lot for the money. And in all of Florida, Martin county, extending from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic Ocean, has the best variety of Florida’s offerings. It's two hours north of Miami and two hours south of Orlando, so both these attractions are an easy day trip. But why pretend when you can have the real thing? Stuart is the sailfish capital of the world. From here charter boat captains slam thousand horsepower, forty foot sport fishing machines through Gulf Stream seas en route to raising as many as thirty sailfish in a day. Backcountry fishing guides piloting fast, shallow draft flats skiffs put their clients in casting range of record class tarpon, snook, redfish and sea trout. Lake Okeechobee guides in seventy mile an hour bass boats dodge gators and moccasins in search of lunker large mouth bass. Dive operators offer scuba experiences ranging from wreck dives to lobstering and spear fishing. The best drift diving in the US is thirty minutes away and practically effortless. Sea turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks, and huge schools of silvery snapper abound.

of the shoreline is public. So the beaches are condo free. The beach in Hobe Sound is a Federal Wildlife Refuge. You can walk six miles on it without encountering a building , dock, or car. Fishermen with twelve foot surf rods catch whiting, croakers, bluefish and pompano here. Others walk and cast the surf line for snook and tarpon. Stuart’s Bathtub Beach is a favorite of families and kids. A natural reef breakwater creates a hundred yard wide lagoon that is pond flat at low tide. Thus, the name. Free of currents and wave action, it amounts to a giant tide pool and is a natural for little kids. Snorkelers love it, too for its clear water and up close views of tropical fish and coral right off the beach and protected from waves. www.travelworldnews.com • Travel World News

It’s real, not Typhoon Lagoon, and free The Indian River Lagoon forms a miles long water way protected by barrier islands. One can launch a kayak off a car roof at literally hundreds of places and paddle to remote bays, deserted islands and mangrove creeks. Manatees and dolphins are common. The light tackle fishing is very good, and kayaks can be rented or purchased locally from vendors who offer guided tours and lessons. Aviation enthusiasts can buy a thrill here too. Indiantown airport’s six thousand foot grass runway attracts antique and experimental aircraft pilots. Non pilots can take an acrobatic demo ride or hop a ride in an open cockpit Stearman biplane. When that huge radial engine thunders to life spitting fire and belching smoke it makes an unforgettable impression before you’re even off the ground.

Carribbean Shores Hotel, Stuart, restored 1930’s bungalows.

Real restaurants, cooking real food It’s real, not a theme park ride The Florida Oceanographic Society offers an education in inshore and reef ecology with touch tanks where kids pet stingrays and handle starfish, crabs, sea cucumbers and jellyfish. And right across the street The Elliot Museum shows what life in Florida was like going back to pre history. Or just go for a walk or bike ride. Martin county has more bike paths and hiking trails than you could do in a month. Downtown Stuart offers a walkable shopping and dining area reminiscent of small town American Main Streets all but extinct now. Stuart has preserved a thriving main street packed with eclectic shops, excellent restaurants, outdoor cafes, and small bars and clubs. Frequent outdoor concerts and art shows add entertainment variety and unique shopping opportunities.

It’s real, not Downtown Disney Five miles south is Port Salerno, a working waterfront fishing community home to one of Florida’s last small town commercial fishing fleets. It’s old Florida with nearly a dozen waterfront restaurants and bars thrown in. The Fish House Art Center provides studios and living space for 10 local artists, and the public is invited to watch them work. A glass blower, ceramic artists, and several painters form an artist’s enclave of extraordinary talent.

Real art work, not made in China souvenirs Restaurants range from the more upscale Finz with it’s panoramic waterfront view, bar, and live music to King Neptune’s, the proverbial eight table hole-in-the-wall with great food. Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

Martin County has two dozen golf courses. From inexpensive public courses to upscale private clubs. And PGA championship courses are an easy drive. You can even take sailing and polo lessons here!

Accommodations Most of the big chain hotels are available off I-95. But more colorful digs can be had right on the shores of the Indian River Lagoon. The River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp, and The Caribbean Shores offer a range of rentals from standard motel rooms to efficiencies to beautifully restored 1930’s bungalows. Both places have docks or piers, and kayaks are provided or rented. Hammocks, palm trees, sea breezes and good fishing nearly right off the front porch make these especially attractive. The Inn at Tilton Place is one of several bed and breakfasts available. The Clarion Inn is centrally located and easily accessible. Though right on the main drag through town, it offers a secluded pool and tiki bar in a tropical setting. The nearest major airport is West Palm Beach, PBI. Visitors flying in will want a car. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine recently named Salt Lake one of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade,” touting Salt Lake’s cost of living and doing business, as well as its close proximity to mountain recreation. In their search for top cities, they “focused on places that specialize in ‘out-of-the box’ thinking,” stating that a city’s innovation factor has three elements: smart people, great ideas and a high level of collaboration. The list includes cities that are “not just great places to live, but also great places to start a business or find a job.” With world-renowned hospitality and great value, Salt Lake is not only an ideal place to live and do business, it’s also excellent for conventions. “Salt Lake has come to define the term ‘host city’ after successfully hosting such high profile events as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Rotary International’s 2007 Convention, and MPI’s 2009 World Education Congress,” said Scott Beck, President & CEO of the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau. As noted in Kiplinger’s report, part of what makes Salt Lake such an ideal city is the abundance of recreation, unique dining and nightlife, and the vibrant local art and culture scene. “For a visitor, when you combine all of this with the natural surroundings you truly have a unique one of a kind destination that is “Different by Nature,” Beck concluded. VISIT ITALY WELCOMES PROFESSOR’S CONCEPT There are still a few spots left on Prof. Barry Goldsmith’s exclusive, first “Been There, Haven’t Done” tour to Italy’s Veneto October 16–23. Based on his book (and lectures) “Been There, Haven’t Done That”™ recommending sites most miss, even those who have visited Venice previously can discover something they’ve never seen. (Prof. Goldsmith is a travel journalist, lecturer and travel-television personality.) Travelers will visit the Veneto, the area surrounding Venice many have not seen, with Montagnana, one of Europe’s best-preserved and little-known medieval walled cities. Music lovers will explore Rigoletto’s Mantua, Wagner’s death room (Venice), Vivaldi’s Venetian church, and more. Those enjoying literature will get to see the real Verona of Romeo and Juliet, the palatial Venetian deathroom of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (this palazzo is also a museum of the 18th century), the Venice home of Henry James, and other interesting places. Lovers of Palladian architecture appreciate Vicenza, Palladio’s hometown, and his villas nearby, as well as his greatest churches in Venice. And it’s not all high-brow art. Travelers see the Doge’s actual crown depicted in the world’s most famous paintings. And the original platform shoes—17th-century strap-ons used for floods. The leisure of cruises, with packing only once, inspired the first of Prof. Goldsmith’s new travel concepts: “Only Pack Once Tours”™ based in a single hotel for the entire trip, so guests pack and unpack just once. Another new concept is Prof. Goldsmith’s “Behind Closed Doors”™ visits to sites closed to the general public. Guests see exclusive, private viewings such as San Marco’s gloriously illuminated golden mosaics sparkling and dazzling at night. Besides being a professor of architecture, Prof. Goldsmith is also a professor of comedy. So his guests are going to have fun, too. Rates are $2,340 ppdo, single supplement $490. FREDERIC CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION SET FOR OCTOBER IN WARSAW The 16th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition will be held October 2–23 this year in Warsaw. Chopin Competition is one of the oldest and most prestigious music competitions in the world, and among the few monographic piano competitions dedicated to the musical performance of one composer. The first event took place in 1927 at the Warsaw Philharmonic. Subsequent competitions were held, at five-year intervals, in 1932 and 1937. The fourth post-war edition was organized in 1949 and the fifth in 1955. Since then, Chopin Competitions have been held at five-year intervals. The Competition has been part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva since 1957. Pianists’ performances are evaluated by an international jury chaired by outstanding Chopin experts and winners, such as pianists Adam Harasiewicz, Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlson, Kristian Zimmerman, Stanislav Bunin, Yundi Li and most recently Rafal Blechacz. The competition will see several main prizes and special awards: the Polish Radio prize for the best Mazurka performance, the Frederic Chopin Society in Warsaw prize for the best Polonaise, and the prize for the best performance of a Concerto awarded by the National Philharmonic. A number of events accompany the Competitions, including fringe concerts, meetings and panel discussions. Since 1975 a fixed point on the program has been the anniversary celebrations of Frederic Chopin’s death. The 17th of October is included in the competition’s calendar and is recognized as the day that homage is paid the composer. On this occasion, a ceremonial mass is held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw during which Wolfgang Amadeusz Mozart’s “Requiem” is performed. CARIBBEAN TWO FREE NIGHTS A FEATURE AT GRAND CASE BEACH CLUB

Guests who start and end their vacations at the Grand Case Beach Club between September 1 and October 31, 2010, will be able to take advantage of the fifth and seventh nights free. The free nights apply to all categories, and may not be used in conjunction with any other promotion. Booking wedding receptions at the Grand Case Beach Club is paying off for travel agents because in most cases it means multiple room reservations for family and friends who accompany them. According to General Manager Steve Wright, wedding receptions have more than doubled in the past year because newlyweds have quickly learned that they have the best of both worlds. They marry in the U.S. and then travel to St. Martin for the reception and honeymoon at the oceanfront resort. The Grand Case Beach Club arranges the food, music and photography. In addition to wedding receptions, travel agents or their clients can take advantage of the Grand Case Beach Club’s online concierge service to book restaurant reservations, arrange for flowers, champagne or a variety of special requests prior to arrival. The Grand Case Beach Club is but a five-minute walk from Grand Case village, the culinary capital of the island, and a ten-minute drive from the capital Marigot. The resort features water sports and fitness centers, boutique, swimming pool, tennis court, and in all units a fully equipped kitchen and flat-screen satellite TV. Room rates include continental breakfast daily. Grand Case Beach Club, www.grandcasebeachclub.com

The award-winning design of the villa includes multiple living areas, including an exterior living room with fireplace as well as interior living areas with wet bar. There are four dining experiences at the Bird of Paradise and hidden hideaways such as an Indonesian bale, or daybed, and a hilltop deck with a traditional Anguilla dominos table. No one has a garden view. For those who want space to socialize, but then also have the ability to get away from the group, there is no property better designed. ST. EUSTATIUS OFFERS TOURS REVEALING ITS NATURAL AND HISTORIC WONDERS The tiny Netherlands Antilles island of St. Eustatius (Statia) was always considered a historical gem and is now Caribbean’s hidden treasure. During the 1700s Statia was called the Golden Rock of the Caribbean. It was the international trade center of the western hemisphere, changing hands 22 times between French, Dutch, English. St. Eustatius has remained Dutch from 1816 to the present; English is spoken everywhere, however, though the official [government] language is Dutch. Statia offers a variety of tours. Taxi Island tours include a short stop at historical sites and museum; and Historical Walking Tours include a booklet, the historical sites, and a tour of the museum. A free tour of the Historical Core is about the restoration and historical explanation of the gingerbread houses in the upper town of Oranjestad. Tours are 2.5 hours in duration. Island tours are $20 pp and Historical Walking tours $15 pp. There are 16 types of orchids on the island, nine species in the Quill/Boven National Park and seven located at the northern trails of Boven and Gilboa. The perfectly formed extinct volcano better known as the Quill is 2,000 feet high. The northern trails include Boven, Bergje, Gilboa Hill, Signal Hill and Pilot Hill. The Volcanic cone of the Quill dominates Statia’s landscape. The Quill is a lush tropical rainforest and has attracted thousands of visitors. The fascination and beauty of the volcano can be appreciated when visitors descend inside the crater—a depth of over 900 feet above sea level—and explore the verdant rainforest nestled within its huge crater, with trees reaching up to over 130 feet in height. A popular hike is called St. Eustatius Hiker’s Paradise (Trail tags are $6 per person.). Its duration is 3.5 hours. LATIN AMERICA METROPOLITAN TOURING ANNOUNCES NEW OFFICES IN BRAZIL AND COLOMBIA

SPECIAL 15-PERCENT COMMISSION RATE OFFERED BY SOUTH STAR TOURS

Metropolitan Touring, South American tour operator with headquarters in Quito, Ecuador, has announced the start of operations in Colombia with the opening of Metropolitan Touring Colombia and in Brazil with the creation of Metropolitan Touring Brazil. “Colombia has huge potential as a tourist destination,” said Paulina Burbano de Lara, Metropolitan Touring’s President. “It has a stunning variety of attractions from the Caribbean coast to the mountains of the Andes to the rainforests of the Amazon, and its people are warm and welcoming. We are delighted to begin operations in the country and are very confident the number of international travelers will increase exponentially in the near future.” Already in 2009, visitor numbers to Colombia grew by 10.7 percent—more than any other country in Latin America—to 1.4 million. Metropolitan Touring Colombia is the fusion of two companies, Bienvenidos Turismo and Colombia’s Gate, which between them have over 25 years of experience in the incoming travel sector. Metropolitan Touring’s ground-handling operations in Brazil, meanwhile, will be in association with Chile-based explora and Freeway, a Brazilian tour operator which specializes in ecotourism programs and which is a key member of TOI, the Brazilian Tour Operators’ Initiative for Sustainable Tourism Development. “The Brazilian government is investing heavily in tourism promotion and with the World Cup and the Olympics due in the next six years, it’s a great time for us to enter this market,” said María Cecilia Alzamora, Vice President of Incoming Tourism at Metropolitan Touring. “We have been looking to work in the country for some time and we are delighted to be able to bring our knowhow and experience to bear in this destination. The future is bright for Brazil.” Metropolitan Touring now operates in six countries across South America, part of its strategic plan to offer the travel trade a “onestop shop” for all their travel needs across the continent. The company plans to bring its expertise and know-how to these destinations, building on a commitment to sustainable and life-enriching travel experiences. Metropolitan Touring, www.metropolitan-touring.com

South Star Tours is offering a 15-percent commission on all its pre- and post-cruise packages and shore excursions on bookings made by October 31 for travel taken any time in 2010–2011. Cruising to South America is on the rise and many agents can now benefit and earn commission when booking the shore excursions for their clients before they depart. Traditionally, clients booked their excursions directly with the cruise company, which never paid any commission to the hard-working travel agent. South Star has developed a comprehensive list of shore excursions along Central and South America’s coast, as well as preand post-cruise tours, which offer most destinations and private services at very competitive prices—and most important, they’re commissionable to the travel agent. Some of the most sought-after pre-cruise tours are the combination of Buenos Aires or Rio and Iguassu Falls, post-tour from Valparaiso to Santiago and overnight. HAMADRYADE LODGE PROVIDES ECO-LUXURY IN ECUADORIAN AMAZON RAINFOREST Sebastien and Melanie Cazadehore came to Ecuador with the dream to create a little paradise in the rainforest, naming it Hamadryade after the tree nymphs Hamadryads (Greek mythology) who lived in the forests amid the trees. The couple aims not only to protect that legendary forest, but also to help the rest of the jungle survive harmoniously. They use rainwater for the lodge, purifying it afterward, avoiding using river or underground waters. Kitchen and shower water is filtered before reaching the soil, and all biodegradable products ensure less pollution. A bio-tank system handles septic needs, and even the swimming pool functions on a chlorine-free ozone system. Natural light is emphasized by the architecture, along with other ingenious touches learned from the natives. Décor employs locally produced textiles and other accoutrements in a pure and simple yet luxurious design that contrasts with the lush surroundings provided by the rainforest itself. A combination of exotic local fruits, vegetables and techniques, coupled with the owners’ French influence, creates three-course gourmet dinner adventures. The resort offers packages of three days/two nights to a week’s stay including accommodation, full board, aquatic transport, and daily jungle tours with bilingual naturalist and native guides. Transportation is an additional cost that can also be booked through their representative. Prices are commissionable and range from $423 pp for three days/two nights to $1,234 pp for seven days/six nights. Since it’s so small, a maximum of just eleven guests can enjoy Hamadryade at any given time. We are so proud of the transformation and despite the recession, bookings are up. We are confident it is a result of giving a higher-quality product at affordable rates and we want to be known for offering luxurious touches and value for money,” she went on to say. “The Cayo district is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to touring options,” Robertson says. LATIN AMERICA NO MORE POTHOLES TO PARADISE WITH PAVING OF ROAD TO LA MANSION INN Costa Rica is noted for many things... beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, friendly people... and of course, those rustically charming potholes, fondly referred to in many a Trip Advisor review. Now, though, after more than a decade of petitioning, La Mansion Inn’s management is overjoyed—paving of the road leading to it started in July. Despite being one of the most popular destinations in Central America, Manuel Antonio is a “young” attraction. A few adventurers started trickling into the port town of Quepos in the 1960s and the first Manuel Antonio restaurant “Barba Roja” (or “Red Beard,” an ocean-view pirate-themed bar) was established in 1975—but was reachable only by trekking or on horseback. The town was described as looking like an old Western movie in the early 80s, with horses, dirt roads, and Western-style buildings. In just a few decades the region has grown rapidly, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Today the infrastructure of Manuel Antonio continues to improve as a world-class tourist destination. La Mansion Inn has been appreciative of the understanding and support of their guests over the years and the unique, five-star property is now poised to welcome the best, yet to come. The resort is offering Green Season Specials 2010: During September, guests can stay for 4 nights and pay just 3, and in October they stay for 3, pay for 2. COSTA RICA’S PARADOR RESORT & SPA CELEBRATES 15 YEARS Parador Resort & Spa in magnificent Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, is celebrating its fifteenth year as one of the consistently lauded luxury properties in Central America. A multiple World Travel Awards recipient (Mexico & Central America’s Leading Hotel 2009 in the most recent WTA poll), Hotel Parador’s lush grounds sprawl over 12 acres of wildlife-rich rainforest with vistas that extend from the small islands dotting Manuel Antonio National Park to the newly inaugurated Pez Vela Marina in Quepos. Situated atop a bluff overlooking the Pacific on land once inhabited by the fabled Quepoa Indians, scenic jungle trails—shared by titi and whiteface monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds—snake through the property leading to hidden enclaves and panoramic cliffs from which migrating whales might be sighted. The hotel was conceived and created in homage to traditional Spanish “paradors” by owner and Dutch entrepreneur Jan Schans who fulfilled a dream to marry the splendor of fine European boutique hotels with the relaxed atmosphere defining a tropical paradise. Over the years, the resort has grown in scope, most recently with the unveiling of the opulent Parador Suites complex. Featuring a collection of luxurious, beautifully-appointed suites and rooms, all with incomparable ocean, jungle and garden views, Parador Resort & Spa boasts three swimming pools featuring such accents as cascading falls and swim-up bar, an onsite health center, full-service wellness 44 • SEPTEMBER 2010

spa, tennis court and miniature golf course, a private dining and conference room, three world-class restaurants and two gift shops. Secluded yet just minutes from famed beaches, celebrated Manuel Antonio National Park, neighboring Quepos with its local flavor, and the domestic airport, the relaxed luxury of Parador Resort & Spa provides the perfect antidote to life’s everyday chaos. The resort distinguishes itself not only by its world-class amenities and European-inspired ambience, but also through its commitment to sustainable tourism and community service, along with Costa Rican “Pura Vida” hospitality. PROFITABLE WORLD OF NICHE MARKETS SHOTOVER CANYON SWING ‘RUSH’ BRINGS AMERICANS BACK TO NEW ZEALAND FOR MORE

Marc and Christina at the moment of no return, watched by jump masters on the platform, Darren Malatesta and Chris Johnson. They came, they swung and now they’re addicted. An American couple who fell in love with Queenstown’s Shotover Canyon Swing last year have returned to rack up their 20th jump in less than a year. Last year physician Marc Helzer and his wife Christina Maniaci from Michigan ‘swung’ 17 times between them with Queenstown’s Shotover Canyon Swing during a visit to New Zealand. This month they took to the swing in their first tandem jump—strung upside down then freefalling ‘eyeballs down’ in a new jump known as ‘The Tandem Gimp Boy Goes To Hollywood.’ “It was great fun; a real thrill,” said a delighted Christina after their jump. “I knew what I was in for with the guys out there as I’d swung before, they’re hilarious.” The couple said they love Queenstown so much they now refuse to vacation anywhere else in the world. EPIC CYCLING JOURNEY WITH TOUR D’AFRIQUE TO SPAN SOUTH AMERICA IN 2011 Tour d’Afrique is taking registrations for a 2011, 4,070-mile transcontinental 80-day cycling expedition called Vuelta Sudamericana that departs Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 25, ending on December 13 in Lima, Peru. The epic journey will travel under and around 20,000-foot peaks in the Andes and up the Pacific Coast through Chile through Bolivia to Machu Picchu, then on to the finish line in Lima. Cyclists will average 35–50 miles a day on rough dirt and gravel roads and up to 100-plus miles on good paved roads. One stretch includes an entire day of climbing followed by a wild, two-hour descent from an altitude of 12,000 feet to sea level. The per-person cost for the full tour is approximately $7,800. The journey can also be experienced as five distinct shorter segments with pricing starting around $600. Henry Gold, Tour d’Afrique’s founder and director, had this to say about the tour: “From Darwin’s exploration of the Galapagos to 46 • SEPTEMBER 2010

Che Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries, the wonders of South America have changed the lives of travelers throughout time. The goal of this tour is not to travel the most efficient line between the opposite ends of a continent, but to explore it by bike. Participants will ride from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans, and climb up and down ... and up and down the Andes. Enroute, we will visit some of South America’s most renowned sites.” “Traveling by bike,” he explains, “allows you to immerse yourself in a foreign culture, to smell strange and wonderful foods cooking as you roll through a village, to share homemade beer in a country inn, to feel the temperature drop as you relentlessly climb to the top of a mountain pass, and to observe how the culture and vegetation changes across landscapes. Such experiences create the Zen of long-distance cycle touring.” Vuelta SudAmericana is one of Tour Afrique’s five epic tours that include Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul, Tour d’Afrique from Cairo to Cape Town, Silk Route from Istanbul to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Amber Route from St. Petersburg to Venice, and Indian Adventure from Agra to southernmost Kanyakumari. AUSTIN-LEHMAN ADVENTURES AGAIN ‘WORLD’S BEST’ IN TRAVEL + LEISURE’S 15TH ANNUAL READERS’ SURVEY POLL For the second consecutive year, Austin-Lehman Adventures was named one of the top two tour operators in the world by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. Finishing in the number one spot in 2009 and the number two spot in 2010, Austin-Lehman continues to distinguish itself as consumer favorite with its active smallgroup adventures that take travelers off the beaten path and provide a highly personal experience. In the just released 2010 August issue of Travel + Leisure featuring the World’s Best Awards readers’ survey, ALA scored 96.60 out of 100 points—the highest score of any active travel/adventure Tour Operator. The company offers 47 trips in North, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. “It’s the small touches that are so meaningful,” commented cofounder Paul Lehman. “The black-out sleeping masks in Alaska to cope with 22 hours of sunlight, being wrapped in a warm towel following a rafting trip or enjoying a cup of tea with a Berber family after a vigorous hike in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It is our desire to always provide a ‘five-star’ experience even in the middle of the wilderness.” Austin-Lehman Adventures destinations include iconic national parks and backcountry regions of North, Central and South America as well as southern Africa and Europe. PROFITABLE WORLD OF NICHE MARKETS ST. EUSTATIUS ISLAND IN THE ANTILLES IS A DIVER’S DELIGHT AND HISTORIC GEM

St. Eustatius in the Dutch Antilles is home to three Padi-experienced dive shops, right on the waterfront. There are 33 buoyed dive sites to explore in the marine park, making very easy access from the dive shop to the water. Most importantly, all dive sites are in close proximity—five to twelve minutes away. St. Eustatius offers virgin diving, not overrun or impacted by divers. Pristine coral reefs, drop-offs, canyons and archaeological dives make for some exciting dives. Fascinating underwater wrecks—more than 150 dating from the 1700s to 2004—are present in the waters. St. Eustatius is also home to the Charles L. Brown, the largest artificial wreck in the Caribbean—over 300 feet long, built in 1954 in Italy. Statia Marine Park is one of the top five sites in the Caribbean in terms of healthy corals and fish populations. Divers can hear the calls of dolphins and whales as they migrate through the Marine Park January to April. All equipment is supplied. Divers must bring their certification card and it is recommended that their last dive has been within six months prior. Three tank dives are available on request. The six-night/10-dive program includes transfers and flights from Johannesburg and is offered now at the special rate of $2,250. Pole Pole is considered one of the most exclusive eco-resorts in the world. This tour features exploration of the underwater wonders of Mafia Island. The reefs of the archipelago offer a staggering display of varied marine life—over 48 genera of coral and 400 species of fish so far identified. Especially between the months of October to March, divers can swim with whale sharks— gentle giants quietly feeding on plankton not too far from the shore. The tour is six nights and offers 10 dives including transfers and flights from Johannesburg. It’s now being offered for the special rate of $2,250. In Zanzibar, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel overlooks a sparkling expanse of iridescent Indian Ocean, where overwhelming numbers of amazing tropical fish proliferate on the coral gardens that form a lagoon there. Whale sharks migrate twice a year and humpback whales are often seen breaching right outside the hotel. Dolphins, permanent residents, often accompany the boat trips. The Zanzibar tour is seven nights with 10 dives including transfers and flights from Dar es Salaam, currently priced at the special rate of $2,720. EUROPEAN WATERWAYS CHARTERS FAMILY LUXURY HOTEL BARGING European Waterways recognizes that hectic lifestyles allow little time for families to spend quality time together. Grandparents, parents and children rarely get an opportunity to experience group leisure time and family charters aboard a European Waterways hotel barge provide the solution and opportunity to share experiences that will flavor family-dinner conversations for years to come. For example, Scottish Highlander travels through the Great Glen in Scotland between Inverness and Fort William, across Loch Ness and along the Caledonian Canal. She offers all ages a unique opportunity to go Nessie Spotting with her own sonic “fish finder” while cruising across enchanting Loch Ness to Fort Augustus. Families can also enjoy a picnic on the Silver Sands of Morar and if they like, even take a magical steam train ride excursion on The Hogwarts Express. Many of the castles in this area were used in the Harry Potter movies and the whole trip is full of myth and legend. Six-night/seven-day cruises are available for family charters aboard Scottish Highlander from $25,200 for a whole boat charter. Barging allows a new location every day without the dramas of packing and unpacking several times during the holiday. A variety of activities can be arranged for all age groups both aboard and ashore.
