INDUSTRY EVENTS ATS TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF FALL OF BERLIN WALL AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN GERMANY
The elegant and historic five-star Grand Hotel Heiligendamm on the shores of the Baltic Sea will be the venue for the 2009 ATS Fall Conference.
The American Tourism Society (ATS) has set its Fall 2009 Annual Conference for October 26–28 at the five-star Grand Hotel Heiligendamm in the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Eastern Germany. The event will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, while at the same time marking the 20th anniversary of the founding of ATS. The joint announcement was made by ATS President, Phil Otterson, also Executive VP of External Affairs, Tauck World Discovery; and Tobias Woitendorf, Deputy CEO of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourism Association, a destination marketing organization. The Conference will follow one of ATS’s most successful ever—in Cairo, Egypt, October 2008. ATS Chairman, David Parry, also Chairman Academic Travel Abroad, commented “In Egypt we had great feedback on the expanded ATS Tourism College program which involved over 200 tourism university students on one level and the private sector on another; as well as on the new partnerships we launched with the National Tour Association (NTA) and Tourism Cares. All of these initiatives will be even further developed at our conference in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.” “Meck Pomm,” as often referred to by the locals, is located in the northeastern part of Germany on the Baltic Sea. Only two hours from Berlin, the same hotel and venue used for the G8 Summit in 2007 is being used for the ATS Fall Conference. Although most of its 10 million annual visitors come for seaside resorts and activities, it is also a region rich in history and culture, with over 2,000 castles and manor houses. “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mixes a very modern infrastructure with a rich cultural heritage dating back to the medieval times,” said Mr. Woitendorf. “There is a booming tourism industry here with more than 2,000 businesses focused on hospitality alone. However, we are a best-kept secret in the American market. Hosting the ATS conference will provide us with a rare opportunity to showcase our destination to the ATS members and press, as well as to educate our local private sector on marketing to the U.S.” American Tourism Society (ATS), www.americantourismsociety.org Travel World News • www.travelworldnews.com

Africa Travel Association Holds 34th Annual Congress in Cairo
T
ourism Ministers and Leading Travel Experts From Across Africa Convene and Connect The Africa Travel Association (ATA), in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA), hosted its Annual Congress May 17–21 in Cairo, Egypt. Under the banner “Connecting Destination Africa,” the event gathered tourism ministers, tourism boards, airlines, hoteliers, and ground operators, as well as corporate, non-profit and academic sectors and press, to help shape Africa’s tourism agenda. Held at the Conrad Cairo Hotel, the congress was hosted by Hon. Mohamed Zoheir Garranah, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism. Honorable Shamsa Mwangunga (MP), ATA President and Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, opened speaking of tourism as a driver of African development. “Africa realizes the important role tourism can play in each country particularly in the areas of economic development, poverty reduction and promotion of peace. In fact, we have already seen that most peaceful countries have witnessed a steady increase in tourism arrival receipts,” she said. In his introductory remarks, Amr El Ezaby, Egyptian Tourist Authority Chairman, said the congress presented an opportunity to share information and ideas on marketing Africa’s tourism products, especially during challenging times. “Until twenty to thirty years ago, Egypt was a one-product destination: the classic Egypt tour. But in the 1980s Egypt started to diversify its product in order to retain its competitive edge, by developing resort tourism on the Red Sea, desert tourism and cultural tourism. This diversification led to dramatic demand and generated an increase of infrastructure from 18,000 rooms in 1982 to 210,000 rooms in 2008.” “Today,” he said, “Egypt is striving to change its image even further by developing high-end resorts to appeal to the luxury market.” The success of Egypt’s diversification strategy is reflected in the country’s increase in the number of tourism arrivals, with 17-percent growth in 2008 despite the climate. Dr. Elham M. A. Ibrahim, the African Union’s Commissioner of Infrastructure and Energy, sent words of support: “The African Union counts on ATA to come up with practical solutions particularly on how to costeffectively promote Africa’s tourist attractions as well as foster cooperation among all tourism stakeholders includ-

ing policymakers, development planners, investors, financiers, operators and the public at large, with a view to addressing the specific development needs of the tourism sector in Africa… I wish to assure you that the African Union will always be ready to work closely with ATA to ensure that the continental tourism industry meets its primary objectives of facilitating socio-economic development and integration of Africa,” she wrote in the letter to the delegates. Edward Bergman, ATA Executive Director, spoke of ATA’s longstanding ties with Egypt and the opportunity the congress presented to build public-private partnerships. “ATA is thrilled to be joined by so many distinguished leaders in the industry who bring their unique experiences and expertise to the congress and lead us in addressing the key issues facing Africa’s emerging tourism industry today,” he said. High-profile delegates included Lisa Simon, President of the National Tour Association (NTA), who discussed what travel professionals need to know when doing business in the United States.

IGLTA CLAIMS GAY TOURISM IS RECESSION-PROOF The gay travel market remains strong despite the recession, according to the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, the tourism association that represents the gay and lesbian travel industry worldwide. “Twenty-five years ago, gay tourism was a small, specialist niche” said John Tanzella, Executive Director of the IGLTA. “Now it’s a thriving sector worth over $70 billion last year in the USA alone.” Paul D. Gibb, CTC and President of Gibb Travel Corporation, a Tzell Travel Specialist, from Boston, MA, said, “by joining the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), it was and still is an important way to personally get to know the gay and gay friendly suppliers, and their agents. It is a place for all of us to grow our business.” A new online study indicates that GLBT travel illustrates more resilience as reported in the most recent tourism survey by Harris Interactive, a global market research and consulting firm, in conjunction with Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc., a strategic public relations and marketing communications firm with special expertise in the GLBT market. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) consumers report on average they are likely to spend about $2,300 between May and August 2009 for both leisure and business travel, while heterosexuals on average they are likely to spend about $1,500 during that same period. The IGLTA boasts over 1,600 members in 66 countries worldwide, with more than 800 members from the USA. KAI AND ASK ME FORM NORTH AMERICAN PARTNERSHIP In an effort to provide hotels with a multi-faceted sales and marketing platform throughout North America, KAI and ASK ME have joined forces, combining years of knowledge of the travel market. By providing hotels with comprehensive and tactical initiatives, each designed to generate brand awareness and garner sales, the KAI and ASK ME team will implement programs for their hotel partners designed to move market share through a variety of mediums. “Partnering with KAI was a decision we made based solely on the fact that our two companies share a common philosophy and work ethic. The core foundation of our goals and the services we provide our hotel partners are one and the same; it only makes great business sense to offer our clients the ability to have streamlined representation for both US and Canada,” said Marilyn Cairo, Vice President of Marketing for ASK ME. “To be successful in the travel industry, you need to have a company which is on top of the market trends, competition, what’s hot–what’s not, contacts with the wholesalers, agencies and media—and that’s where we can help. We do the groundwork; implement the plan of action and hotels reap the rewards in increased sales and exposure,” said Annika Klint, Managing Director of The KAI Group. B
een there. Done that.” Those are words that travel agents dread hearing -- especially from their best clients. This Travel World News column will recommend great undiscovered cities around the world as well as undiscovered sites in familiar cities. Even in famous cities – London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Vienna – there are many compelling sites you'll now discover. Where is the only existing Benjamin Franklin home in the world? Philadelphia? No. Downtown London. No American visitors last time I was there. Tired of the usual day trips out of London to Stonehenge and Hampton Court/Windsor Palaces? Try Hatfield House – the palace where Princess Elizabeth was told she was Queen. That’s Elizabeth I. Combine it with George Bernard Shaw's house a few miles away. And in another direction, there are Hever Castle, childhood home of Anne Boleyn; Seven Oaks, ancestral home of Virginia Woolf; and Chartwell, home of Sir Winston Churchill. All in the same ‘hood. From Paris: Most commercial day trips to Rheims include just the cathedral and the champagne cellars. But they miss one of Europe's most historic sites: the schoolhouse where the Nazis surrendered to Eisenhower ending WWII in Europe. Near Paris is the chateau that inspired the building of the Palace of Versailles and inspired Alexander Dumas to write The Man in the Iron Mask – Vaux le Vicomte – the most beautiful chateau in France. Coincidentally, Vaux is also the location of the Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Man in the Iron Mask. In Rome, most tourists see ancient Rome in ruins. On my tours we see
4-Star Toilet
Ancient Rome, No in Ruins: the lateRoman church Santa Costanza (the burial place of Emperor Constantine’s daughter has some of the oldest Early Christian mosaics), Trajan’s market (an almost perfectly preserved indoor market under dramatic barrel vaults) and the Domus Aurea (Nero’s palace). Near Amsterdam is the rarely visited Kroeller-Mueller Museum with its collection of Van Goghs. And just a few miles away is Het Loo, the Dutch royal palace, with magnificent Baroque parterre gardens. (I prefer Amsterdam off-season, when the trees lining the canals are leafless and the entire facades of great 17th and 18th-century canal houses can be seen.) Madrid’s Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales (a 17th-century convent for Spanish noblewomen) is filled with masterpieces in an eerie setting. And yet most tourists have never heard of it. Something as fragile as Montezuma’s feather headdress still exits–and not in Mexico City. It’s in Vienna’s Hofburg Palace. Vienna’s Military Museum exhibits the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated – triggering WWI. Above all, Leisure travel should be fun. I'm often asked, “Do those squat toilets in Asia bother you?” Let me answer that question with this photo I just took in Beijing’s Forbidden City. At a revolving restaurant in Shanghai,
a journalist created quite a stir when she discovered – 10 minutes after we were seated – that her handbag was missing. She pressumed it was stolen. Fifty minutes later, we returned to the same window from which we had departed. There was her handbag still on the windowsill. Humor and travel go hand in hand. (Or in this case, handbag in hand.) Want unique gifts? Shop at museum stores. I buy ties and scarfs for presents at Madrid’s Prado. My friends and family wear one-of-a-kind "Prado," Not listening attentively, some think they’re wearing “Prada.” I’m developing a TV series called Location Vacation–taping where movies were filmed around the world. This column will regularly include Do you have upscale, sophisticated, educated clients looking for something new to see? The London locations in the movie Last Chance Harvey offer more entertainment than the actual movie. Several scenes took place in the courtyard of the restored Somerset House – the world’s largest 18th-century office building. Today Somerset House hosts three London’s best museums: the Courtauld Institute, a branch of the Hermitage and a branch of the National Maritime Museum.New so far in 2009 alone are the Acropolis Museum, the Pinault Museum of Contemporary Art (Venice), the Neues Museum (Berlin), the Hermitage (Amsterdam) and the latest extension of the Art Institute of Chicago. And the expansion of the Anchorage Museum with its new Cafe operated by the ‘Marx Brothers.’ (Another example of architecture and humor.) Barry Goldsmith is a professor of architecture and humor. Goldsmith is a television host of travel-related TV series in the USA and UK. And he is a regular on a new syndicated radio show, Let’s Travel Radio. AUGUST 2009 •

EUROPE GOLFERS WHO TRAVEL GERMANY CAN CHOOSE FROM NEARLY 700 COURSES With nearly 700 courses, many less expensive than other countries, playing golf in Germany is rewarding. Green fees for 18hole courses can start as low as $40 and are usually not higher than $150 even for pro championship courses. An electric golf cart can be rented for less than $40. Over 40 courses along the North and Baltic Sea coasts in Schleswig-Holstein participate in the Golfkuesten (golfcoast) card, which provides 18-hole rounds on five selected courses for a discounted fee of less than $200. The card is valid for a year and can be booked via Internet. Bad Griesbach near Passau in Bavaria’s southeast offers five 18-hole championship courses designed by Germany’s golf star Bernhard Langer—three nine-hole courses, a professional indoor driving range and a children’s course. It has high-end spas, thermal baths, great local and gourmet restaurants, and the beautiful Alps nearby. Hotels range from five-star Hotel Maximillian to smaller family-friendly ones, all in walking distance to courses and spas. Bad Griesbach offers three all-inclusive nights with accommodation, meals, golf and spa passes beginning at $400 per adult and only $140 per child under 12. Around two hours north of Berlin in the beautiful Mecklenburg
Lake district, Golf and Country Club Fleesensee features three courses including the 18-hole castle course, a modern driving range and training facilities, and a children’s course with extra large holes. Its Spa is high-end and modern. One can stay in the elegant Radisson Castle Hotel or in a small house in the Fleesensee Vacation Village. The Robinson Club entertains with special courses from golf to water sports and daily animation programs. The Rhineland area has more courses than any other region: 151. Around Cologne alone, there are 37. Cologne’s Golf Week August 1–8 makes them more accessible to the public—eight courses for eight tournaments in eight days with reduced green fees of $55 each. Besides being Germany’s main airport hub and financial center, Frankfurt has nearly 20 courses, from championship to the less demanding nine-holes. A definite must for ambitious golfers is the Frankfurter Golf Club course. Not far from the city center, it’s already hosted the German Open 12 times. Combining golfing and exquisite dining, Frankfurt’s five-star Castle Hotel Kronberg offers luxury, the Kronberg Golf Course and its high-end restaurant—truly a royal golf getaway in the business metropolis. Commenting on the enhancement of both the fleet as well as the own brand cruise programs, Mr. Costakis Loizou, Louis Group Executive Chairman, stated: “MV Louis Majesty’s acquisition and imminent commencement of her cruise program under the own brand operations, form yet another solid step in materializing the company policy for the continuous upgrade of its product and services. The addition of MV Louis Majesty, a contemporary cruise liner, to the fleet substantially increases the annual number of passengers who choose Louis Cruises. Her deployment from the ports of Genoa and Marseilles, where Louis Cruises’ cruise programs enjoy great success and continuous development, is indicative of the company’s growing strength in the international cruise market and its further establishment as a major cruise operator in the Mediterranean”. EUROPE MALTA IN THE FALL IS VIBRANT — WITH EXCITING SPORTS, ARTISTIC AND HISTORICAL EVENTS
Malta has been the meeting place of civilizations for over 7,000 years and likewise, the winds of change from season to season blend in perfect harmony here, to offer warm mild days and cool nights that allow for outdoor activities, open-air events and dining al fresco in romantic surroundings that have defied time. From September through mid-November, the islands come alive with activities and events to delight all persuasions—theatrical, operatic, artistic, sporting and gastronomical celebrations prevail this season. There’s no better way to celebrate the fruits of summer harvests than with events like the Delicata Wine Festival in Nadur (Gozo) and the Qormi (Malta) Wine Tasting Festival, both held September 4–6. In keeping with the theme, the village of Zejtun organizes the Olive Oil Festival on the 26th to 27th that combines street music, dancing, booths and dining al fresco. For aviation enthusiasts, the Malta International Air show is a spectacle of vintage and new aircraft showcasing brilliant solo or formation aerial displays, also on the 26th and 27th. Aircraft will be parked at Luqa airfield with the action at St. Pauls’ Bay/Qawra area (over the sea). The much-awaited Notte Bianca on October 3 is a one-night spectacle of splendor that will thrill all ages, with the old baroque City of Valletta coming alive for the entire night. Old Auberges baroque homes and imposing palaces built by the Knights of St. John dating back to the mid-1500s are all open to the public for free. Autumn also brings with it the ‘changing of the guards’ parades reenacted by the In Guardia teams. Regular September re-enactment shows are held at Fort St. Elmo on the tip of Valletta within the fortifications of the UNESCO World Heritage city. The even older city of Birgu bursts forth with “Birgu Fest” October 9–11, as candlelit streets illuminate the very first fortified city built by the Knights. The international Military Tattoo is presented October 10 and 11. For yachting enthusiasts and those seeking crew placement aboard one of the many sailing boats participating in the International Rolex Middle Sea Race, warm-up races begin a few days before the start of the prestigious event on October 17. This renowned four-day offshore race leaves Malta to circum18 • AUGUST 2009

Malta Senior’s Open Bowling Championship 2009 will run October 14–18, with the Doubles’ Handicap Challenge Tournament set for the 19th and 20th. Both events are being held at the Eden Leisure Complex in St. George’s, St. Julian’s. For land-lovers, the grueling Malta International Challenge Marathon takes place on November 27. Opera and theatre enthusiasts will love Malta and Gozo productions such as Aida, Rigoletto and the Malta International Choir Competition and Festival. Organ recitals take place in classic Baroque churches. Regular orchestral, soloist concerts and theatrical plays also occur in stunning historic venues like the Manoel Theatre, the Mediterranean Conference Center (formerly the infirmary of the Knights), the St James Cavalier Center for Creativity and the MITP. NEW GRANDHOTEL LIENZ IN AUSTRIA MEETS HIGHEST STANDARDS OF ‘GREEN’ Grandhotel Lienz, a stunning new five-star property that opened in Austria’s medieval city of Lienz in May, is the greenest hotel in the country. Created by Heinz Simonitsch, who was previously Managing Director of Half Moon Club in Jamaica, the first hotel in the Caribbean to become an environmentally friendly hotel, Grandhotel Lienz is a paradigm in energy conservation. Windows and doors were selected to hold in the heat in winter and air conditioning in summer. All specifications were carefully examined before the relevant equipment was ordered and no gas or oil is used for energy within the hotel. All accommodations use a Room Card to open and close the door along with controlling the master light switch. Lights in areas not regularly used are turned off, and turn back on when movement is detected. Waterworks generate electricity. Hot water is produced through a central plant that serves most of the town and uses wood chips. In addition, solar water heaters on the roof heat the indoor and outdoor swimming pool. Further energy is gained through a very efficient heat exchange from the largest underground lake in Austria. All waste is sorted and recycled. The water in East Tyrol, where Grandhotel Lienz is located, is chlorine-free and very safe. The hotel serves still or sparkling tap water in carafes, reducing the use of plastic bottles. Grandhotel Lienz emphasizes health and well-being and contains a Medical Spa and Wellness Center offering western, acupuncture and homeopathic treatments. Plastic surgery services are also offered. The hotel contains 76 suites with landscaped terraces, indoor/outdoor swimming pool, lobby bar with open fireplace and a conference center with up-to-the-minute communications facilities. CARIBBEAN PRESIDENT FELIPE CALDERÓN VISITS BANYAN TREE MAYAKOBA
President Calderón’s visit to the resort of Mayakoba demonstrates the confidence of the Mexican government in the tourism sector. Having suffered setbacks a few months ago, the opening of the first Banyan Tree resort in North America—a brand associated with ultimate luxury travel—is significant for the entire country. This occasion is also significant for Mayakoba, a resort that’s unique in the world. Known as the “Venice of Mexico,” Mayakoba covers over 1,500 acres and now has three luxury hotel brands— Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts—which are linked by six miles of winding freshwater lagoons. In keeping with Mayan culture, Mayakoba has shown respect for the environment from its earliest planning stages, to showcase the best the country has to offer. South America Direct — Bolivia Ancient mysteries on two-mile-high Lake Titicaca, a forest journey on the Amazon, salt flats as far as the eye can see, a park larger than the state of Connecticut, and one of the world’s greatest music festivals. MARK ZUSSMAN
B
olivia lost its Pacific coastline in the late 19th century War of the Pacific, and with that coastline went any possibility, however farfetched, that Bolivia might someday develop as a major international sun-andsand resort. (What difference, after all, if the beaches up and down the coast from Antofagasta — now Chilean — are even any good or not? Who’s going to travel all that distance when Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii — or, for Europeans, the Mediterranean — are only a stone’s throw?) So how has tourism developed in faraway, landlocked Bolivia? For starters, take a country that, by Northern Hemisphere standards, has some grave and stubborn problems. The country, as measured by per capita GDP, is the poorest on the South American continent. The country’s air transport network is fragile. As for the road system, well, precarious is the nice word for it. The problems could conceivably have been swept under the carpet and tourists, those who could be enticed in this direction, herded into great glossy cassino complexes. But in fact Bolivian tourism has developed in a much more interesting way as the positive of all the country’s negatives. Instead of an in-your-face experience of hardscrabble urban and rural poverty, visitors are treated to generous servings of exoticism in the form of awesome millennial indigenous cultures, rich not just in costume and other outer trappings but

in mysticism and spirituality. Hence, the claim that La Pazbased Crillon Tours makes for its native turf: “The most authentic country in South America.” The shortcomings of infrastructure, meanwhile, turn out to be only the inconsequential flip side of an exuberant nature, Andean and Amazonian alike, that has not yet been beaten into submission by asphalt and power lines. The outcome in a world otherwise so generally blessed and at the same time cursed by standardized and interchangeable parts? Something unique. Something that can’t be counterfeited in theme parks.

logical sites on the shores and on the islands of two-mile high Lake Titicaca, and the 110-mile-long lake itself, the snowcapped mountains in the distance, the improbable UrusIruitos Indians on their anchorless islands of floating reeds, the Linachi Brothers with their seaworthy all-reed boats, the fishermen, the herds of llamas — all of these have an awesome, otherworldly majesty and grandeur. But, as anyone in the travel industry knows, you could unearth the Garden of Eden itself and, except for the occasional backpacker, it just isn’t going to attract any visitors in the absence of decent transportation services in and out, decent food services, and decent lodgings. Much praise, then, to the half-century-old Crillon Tours for doing so much to make the Titicaca experience accessible. Crillon owns and operates an ever-expanding five-star hostelry, the Inca Utama Hotel and Spa complex, in the Titicaca lakeshore village of Huatajata. The hotel started small. It has grown over the years to incorporate 50 double rooms and 20 extremely comfortable suites and a first-class dining room whose signature dish is lake trout farm-grown on the premises. Darius Morgan, Jr., the son of Crillon founder Darius Morgan, Sr., has led the way in creating, little by little, a support apparatus of appealing small museums, craft exhibits, demonstrations of native healing arts, and more, to help visitors orient themselves to this strange, parallel universe. Crillon now also owns and operates the Posada del Inca and a nearby restaurant, the Uma Kollu, at commanding high elevations, with panoramic views, on the “offshore” Island of the Sun. According to Inca legend, it is to this Island of the Sun that the sun god Inti dispatched his son Manko Kapak and his daughter Mama Ocllo to lead the Andean peoples out of darkness, and it is also on this island that the brother-sister demigods founded the Inca Empire. In addition to everything else they do on the lake, Crillon operates a fleet of seven hydrofoils to transfer passengers between the Bolivian shore in the south and Puno, Peru in the north or, needless to say, vice versa — regrettably, Bolivia is

too often sold merely for the Titicaca experience as an extension from much more touristy Peru. The hydrofoils also do comprehensive tours of Titicaca itself with stops at the Island of the Sun, the Island of the Moon, the really mind-bending reed islands of the Urus-Iruitos, and the Bolivian lakeshore pilgrimage town of Copacabana that wound up lending its name to a famous beach in Rio, a nightclub in New York and a song by Barry Manilow. Copacabana’s gleaming white basilica is home to the miracle-working statue, carved way back in the 16th century by an Indian craftsman, of Our Lady of Candelaria, the country’s patroness. River cruising on the Mamoré Fremen Tours offers outings of four, five or six days aboard its 12-cabin catamaran rivercraft, the Reina de Enín, in an excitingly out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere location in the headwaters of the Amazon river system. Travelers fly to the hot and steamy nowheresville called Trinidad at the edge of the Bolivian portion of the Amazon river system. (Bolivia has a population of only 10 million, but in physical extent it’s very nearly double the size of France.) They then board the catamaran — simple but clean and each cabin with its own air conditioning and its own private bathroom — for an unforgettable cruise on the white water River Marmoré and the black water River Ibare and in adjacent lakes, marshes and streams. For travelers who have already “done” the Amazon at Manaus, Brazil, this is a different experience altogether. In the neighborhood of Manaus, the Amazon is as wide as four Mississippis. Here in the headwaters, the forest presses in tight on either side. Parrots and toucans, squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys, alligators, pink river dolphins, capybaras (the world’s largest rodent), sloths and opossums can all be observed up close. There’s a visit, by horseback, to a cattle ranch. There are archeological sites. There’s fishing for piranha. Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy some interesting cultural interchanges with the people along the riverbanks. Fremen’s

Madidi National Park Nobody is going to succeed in seeing every majestic landscape in this world, but people who love nature more than they love concrete and shop windows owe it to themselves to do some research on the Madidi National Park up in the Bolivian Northwest, where Bolivia borders on Peru. The park is first of all vast. It’s about a third larger than the state of Connecticut and, if you calculate in similarly protected areas in adjacent Peru, it’s one of the largest protected areas anywhere in the world. Landscapes and ecosystems within this great wilderness range from the snowcapped mountains of the Apolobamba range of the Andes to high-altitude grasslands and great cloud forests and then, farther east, savanna and tropical forest. Wildlife includes 1,000 bird species (including of course the region’s signature species, the condor), bear, jaguar, wolf, monkeys of various kinds, and indeed many a species that does not yet even have a scientific name. This being the kind of attraction for which a picture is worth 1,000 words, the curious are urged to pay a visit to Google Images and type “Madidi” into the search box. There is no way that this is going to disappoint. Several ecology- and preservationminded tour operators make the Madidi experience accessible, but America Tours is particularly noteworthy for its strong support of the Chalalán Ecolodge that is wholly owned and operated by the indigenous QuechuaTacana community. From La Paz, travelers head off on a 55-minute flight over the Royal Range of the Andes into the backwoodsy town of Rurrenabaque, then begin the real adventure the following morning with a journey of about five hours by dugout canoe into the park CONTINUED ON PAGE

Touring Far and Wide A standard tour of Bolivia, to the extent that such an animal even exists, will generally include the Titicaca experience described above; enough time in La Paz for a visit to the cathedral and to the so-called Witches’ Market with its copulation amulets and dried llama fetuses and other weird wares; the “Garden City” of Cochabamba with its largest open-air market in all of South America; the colonial — and very provincial — city of Sucre, whose official status as co-capital to La Paz no outsider can ever quite make sense of; and fabled Potosí, once perhaps the most populous city in the world but now, with its Cerro Rico mountain all but squeezed dry of 45,000 tons of pure silver, a kind of glorious semi-ghost town. For a comprehensive Bolivia tour, consult Crillon or some other one of the major tour operators. Santa Cruz, the dynamic boomtown in Bolivia’s eastern lowlands, does not necessarily make it onto any standard tour, but Santa Cruz is fascinating (economically, sociologically, anthropologically) in own right and also as gateway to the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park (sorry, no room for details here, maybe another time) and to the Jesuit missions (see below). Santa Cruz, it so happens, is also home — however improbably — to one of South America’s great hostelries, the Los Tajibos Hotel and Convention Center. Last time I passed through, most of the South American central bankers also happened to be present for one of their regular get-togethers, and the hotel’s Golden Book has been signed by Prince Albert of Monaco (“Many thanks for a wonderful welcome and hospitality. I hope to return someday soon!”), Kofi Annan (“You have made us very comfortable. Thank you very much and we shall be back”) and other such notables. For me, though, the real glamour of the place resides in the mystery of all those foreigners drinking behind dark sunglasses at the swimming pool, as if in a 1940s movie. U.S. DEA agents? Yeah, some of them probably are that. Engineers expert in the exploitation of natural gas reserves? Geologists from natural resources companies hoping to get their mitts on yet another Bolivian magnesium or some other invaluable Bolivian mineral before the competition does? Yeah, they’re there too. Tourists also welcome. Los Tajibos Hotel and Convention Center, www.lostajiboshotel.com

erected mission settlements in order to civilize and Christianize the local Indian populations in what are now the neighboring republics of Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. Some latter-day students of the phenomenon have come to see these mission settlements as precursors of 20th century concentration camps, as in a certain sense they surely were. Other latter-day students — as well as many of the first group — see these settlements rather as utopian communities or as something pretty close to heaven on earth. The visitor is of course free to be horrified, reverent, neither, or both. However that shakes out, though, the 13 mission communities in eastern Bolivia have left a legacy of art and architecture, virtually unknown in the outside world, that are one of Bolivia’s greatest treasures (and, whether the outside world knows it or not, Bolivia has many treasures). Six of the 13 Bolivian missions have been designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, and a seventh, the very extensive San Ignacio de Velasco, would probably also have been so designated if not for a technical consideration, namely, that, by UNESCO’s formal criteria, too much of its present day splendor is the result not of restoration but of reconstruction. Most of the major Bolivian tour operators have programs to the missions from the aforementioned lowlands boom city of Santa Cruz, but Anavin Travel, in association with BCD Travel, has made something very like a science of the experience. Anavin offer one-day tours to the Javier Mission or to Javier and Concepción, two-day tours to Javier and Concepción, three-day tours to six missions, four-day tours to six missions, and five-day tours to seven missions. Think that if you’ve seen one mission you’ve seen them all? Wrong. The missions are all different one from another in materials of construction, in style and in detailing, and the sum is a great deal more than the total of the parts. A bonus: Europeans and their native tutees composed music like crazy in these missions over the centuries, and the legacy is celebrated in a biennial Festival of Renaissance and Baroque Music. The Uyuni Salt Flats I don’t know the numbers. But it’s altogether possible that the Louvre in Paris receives more foreign visitors in a single week, or even in a single day, than the 4,000 square mile Uyuni Salt Flats, down on the Bolivian border with Chile, have received in all of human history. No room to describe the experience in these parts in any detail here (again, maybe some other time). For now, let’s just say that there is an astonishing whiteness as far as the eye can see (except where there is a red or a green or a blue lagoon or an island of towering cactus) and the sky above is of a dazzling azure. Bolivian tour operators have done a commendable job in beginning to make this spectacularly strange off-the-edge-of-the-world destination accessible, and Tayka Hoteles Ecológicos Comunitarios operate three comfortable and interesting properties in the region. The Hotel Tayka de Sal at the foot of the Thunupa Volcano at the northern extreme of the flats is actually constructed of great blocks of salt. A fourth property, the Tayka Hotel de los Volcanes, near the colorful lagoons, is due to open before the end of the year. The Tayka accommodations are not, to be sure, the only comfortable lodgings in the vicinity, but there are even greater numbers of lodgings that are better adapted to the taste — and to the tolerances — of the swarms of backpackers who haunt these parts than to the clients of the readers of this magazine. Conclusion: as is always the case when you’re this far off the beaten track, best to check with a reliable tour operator such as one of the ones already mentioned, one in the box below, or MagriTurismo, the American Express affiliate in Bolivia, whose tours to the Uyuni are of three days in duration or, for those who also want to fit in Potosí and Sucre, five days. Bueme’s, family-owned for over 50 years with headquarters in Montevideo, is the official representative in Uruguay of Carlson Wagonlit Travel. Showcasing unparalleled surrounding beaches, the company is strong on ranch vacations, golf programs, and equestrian packages. Uruguay is often described as “a big ranch surrounded by the sea,” so those who love horseback riding can gallop across grasslands, firm sandy beaches and dunes—and enjoy a traditional outdoor Uruguayan barbecue at trail’s end. Uruguay offers the variety of rough and calm beaches, fresh and salty water, golden thin or thick sand, private beaches, crowded beaches—all with unique natural elements and beautiful sunsets. Beaches on the coast consist of Atlántida, Minas, Maldonado, Piriápolis, Punta del Este, La Barra, Jose Ignacio, La Paloma, La Pedrera, Cabo Polonio, Valizas, Aguas Dulces, Punta del Diablo and Chuy—each a unique style. Atlántida and Piriápolis are the oldest resorts. The former is most popular for Uruguayans, with family atmosphere and a balance of woodlands and beaches. The latter offers dreamy seaside sceneries and the highest hill in the country. Punta del Este, nicknamed “the pearl of Uruguay,” annually attracts select foreign tourists to its white beaches, the more peaceful La Mansa, more violent La Brava. International chain hotels with high-level services complement the exclusivity of the area. The singular undulated bridge of Punta del Este leads to La Barra and Jose Ignacio. Always in fashion, La Barra is the destination chosen by celebrities. Farther away, Jose Ignacio is a nook that represents paradise for those seeking relaxation by the sea. Mexico City Reborn Ministry of Tourism enacts new plans to show the city’s many attractions. DARIUS CAPPELLI MEXICO TOURISM BOARD
M
exico City boasts an array of attractions shedding its previous reputation. The city is filled with colorful murals, vibrant communities and various five star amenities at a very affordable price. While Mexico City may be the world’s largest urban area, the city possesses a certain warmth and familiarity despite modern developments and high rises. The city’s sixteen delegaciones, or boroughs, are split even further into two hundred and fifty colonias (neighborhoods) providing a wide variety of destinations for any traveler. Mexico City has many historic hotels in the delegacione of Polanco including the Camino Real. The hotel which, featuring a pop-art décor and murals from several famous Mexican artists, this hotel is the preferred lodging of many celebrities, dignitaries and businessmen worldwide. The hotel also has a variety of restaurants and a trendy nightclub called the Moon Bar. The bar is located behind one of the hotel’s eight dining facilities and features an innovative way to serve cocktails. Called “Molecular Cocktails,” these drinks feature dissolving capsules which contain alcohol in typical cocktail drinks. The Moon Bar has live dance music provided by a DJ playing both contemporary dance music and favorites from the 70s and 80s. Being that 85% of the hotel’s guests are businessmen, and typically Mexican, guests should be aware that the majority of people frequenting the hotel’s many drinking establishments are older. However, the people who dine at the hotel’s restaurants are an even split between guests and locals. The hotel has a mural in an open floored café painted by Rufino Tamayo. The café, affectionately named Café Tomayo, features a continental breakfast in the morning with what is widely regarded as his most famous painting as the backdrop. The 95,000 square foot hotel has 712 rooms, of which thirtysix are suites. The rate for a double occupancy room is $330, and there is a corporate discount at $270. Another prestigious hotel in Polanco is the Intercontinental Hotel de Ciudad de Mexico. The hotel is famous for housing an array of politicians and heads of state. Recently, Barack Obama visited and stayed in the presidential suite, which costs $2,000 per night. The other 660 rooms’ prices vary on which floor they are on and which amenities are included. For example, seven of the hotel’s floors are club floors, which, feature a special lounge, which includes various beverages and food. In addition, there is a “Ladies’ Floor” which has special amenities specifically for women. There is a patrolling guard on the floor, women’s publications and more luxurious soaps and shampoos. The hotel has six restaurants, including an impressive wine cellar that can be reserved for private meals. For a different experience, one can stay at the Holiday Inn 32 • AUGUST 2009

located only a block away from the main square of the historic district. The recently renovated rooms are $200 PDO. The hotel boasts a rooftop restaurant that has an afternoon brunch and a stunning view of the main square. Various other amenities are available, like a honeymoon suite with special services. The Marquis Reforma, located on the Paseo de la Reforma, offers luxury accommodations in its 209 rooms and two restaurants. After a deadly earthquake in 1985, the hotel has taken many steps to make the property earthquake proof. The Marquis Reforma has a 1500 square meter spa, which is available for a nominal fee of 15 dollars. The newly renovated lobby is the first over a series of renovations, which will be complete in two years. Mexico City also offers a variety of excursions and sights for travelers. Paseo de la Reforma is a road stretching across the city and provides easy access to Polanco, La Zona Rosa and Centro. The street has a series of Paris-like roundabouts with large statues in the center. It is not uncommon to see people taking wedding and quinciniera - the Mexican equivalent of a sweet 16 - pictures. A series of unique benches, varying from a deck of cards to hands lines the street. The street is also home to numerous cultural events. For example, a world culture fair took place in June where 66 countries showcased their music, food and culture. Flea markets and artistic showcases are also common sights. LATIN AMERICA to the city’s largest ex-pat community and trendy restaurants and cafes line the streets. The neighborhood was where Frida Kahlo lived and her house has been converted to a museum. For roughly four dollars, guests can walk through her villa and see much of her house virtually untouched since her death. The museum has recently acquired much of her art from other galleries and private collections. Surprisingly, the museum has an exceptional gift shop where reproductions of her work as well as other Frida inspired handicrafts are available at modest prices. Just an hour outside of the city, travelers can visit the preAztec ruins of Teotihuacán. While much of the ruins are merely broken down, barely restored walls, two massive pyramids are open to the public to climb. Indigenous peoples dot the ruins selling various Aztec inspired handicrafts and souvenirs. Five minutes outside of the ruins, hungry tourists can eat at La Gruta. An enormous empty cavern was converted into a reception hall for the Mexican president in 1906 and in 1928, La Gruta opened as a public restaurant and has been in continuous operation since. Traditional Mexican fare, such as chili con carne, mole and cactus salad are served at a modest price. Every Saturday, a Mexican dance troupe performs at 3:30 p.m. with traditional ethnic dances from Guadalajara and Durango are performed in costume, as well as one Aztec dance and one Northern Mexican Native dance. The food is authentic, delicious and, like many things in Mexico City, is very affordable. Despite having countless restaurants, bars, landmarks and other attractions, Mexico City has a very low volume of international tourists. The Tourism Ministry of Mexico City attributes this to the city’s reputation as polluted and dangerous. The recent news coverage of swine flu has not helped either. To combat this image, the Mexican Government is taking a variety of innovative techniques to retain and increase its flow of tourists. Starting in July, free health insurance will be provided to all international tourists visiting Mexico City. Also, police escorts are available to any international tourist anywhere in the city at all times. How this system will be maintained though is still a mystery as an extraordinarily low amount of government revenue is devoted to tourism. In addition, the Ministry of Tourism is calling for an eight billion dollar emergency tourism fund in order to combat unforeseeable dilemmas such as the swine flu scare. While 10% of the population works in tourism, only 3% of tax revenue is devoted to the department of tourism. This leaves the Ministry of Tourism very little money to launch international ad campaigns. To increase domestic tourism, the country is issuing debit cards to citizens with a predetermined amount of money which they can pay off up to 60 months after their visit. In 2010, a world tourism fair is being planned to showcase Mexico City as a world-class city. A new “world class aquarium” is being planned as well. Slated to be named as the official airline of Mexico by the end of the year, AeroMexico is working with the government to promote tourism to Mexico City. In October, AeroMexico will be offering the first international flight from New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. AeroMexico offers nonstop flights from Chicago, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans (in October), Houston, New York, Phoenix, San Antonio and Seattle.

MEXICO, MINNEAPOLIS CELEBRATE SISTERHOOD WITH CUERNAVACA AT MOSAIC FESTIVAL OF ARTS The Mexican Consulate in Saint Paul and the Mexico Tourism Board recognized a sister-city bonding between Cuernavaca and Minneapolis at the opening of a summer-long, sixth annual Minneapolis MOSAIC Festival June 6. A relationship formalized last September helps both cities connect and share economically, environmentally, and culturally. Cuernavaca is the capital of the state of Morelos, to which significant Mexican numbers in Minneapolis are tied. The MOSAIC Festival opening night showcased the Chamber Ballet of Morelos, renowned for its participations at various international cultural festivals. As part of the festival, the Consulate General of Mexico in Saint Paul and the Mexico Tourism Board held a Rufino Tamayo exhibition at The Katherine E. Nash Gallery in the University of Minnesota’s West Bank Arts Quarter. Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo, often referred to as leader of the Mexican Renaissance, is an Oaxacan native. Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s 29 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is comprised of the historic town of Oaxaca and nearby archeological site Monte Alban. The Minneapolis MOSAIC Festival is a unique setting for Morelos to share with Minneapolis the state’s heritage reflecting the colors of Mexico through authentic details like the archeological site of Xochicalco—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and the town of Tepoztlan, one of Mexico’s Magical Towns. Morelos also connects with Minneapolis by sharing high environmental standards applied to its parks, like Parque Nacional Lagunas de Zempoala (National Park of Zempoala Lakes). Since 2002, the Twin Cities Area has been closely connecting with Mexico through the sister-city relationship between Saint Paul and the city of Manzanillo, located in the state of Colima and famous for its international fishing competitions. Through this union, the city of Saint Paul has donated bulletproof vests to the police force of Manzanillo and also provided monetary aid for victims of the 2003 earthquake in Colima. SWAIN TOURS HAS SOUTH AFRICAN PACKAGE WITH ALMOST $1,500 SAVINGS
Camp Jabulani, a Relais and Chateaux, eco-award-winning luxury safari camp near Kruger National Park, is instituting an edutainment program called Team Tusker. The program is designed for children under 12 staying at the Camp’s luxurious new lodging, Zindoga Suite, opening in September. While parents enjoy elephant-back safaris, a series of exciting and educational activities for kids will be offered daily from 10 am to 12:30 pm and 3–6 in the afternoon. The Zindoga Suite (named after the first male elephant born to the camp’s herd) allows children to enjoy the unique elephant experience with their parents (those under 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.) Set off from the original site to ensure privacy, the ultra-deluxe suite consists of two units—one accommodates two adults and the other, two adults and two children. The lodging boasts two woodburning fireplaces, two heated pools, as well as a dedicated chef and team. With 13 specially-trained elephants, Camp Jabulani was the first in South Africa to offer elephant-back safaris, and the only one to offer elephant-back safaris at night. On these safaris, guests sit behind the trainer in a comfortable saddle while the elephants quietly negotiate narrow paths in single file and get very close to other members of the animal kingdom. Camp Jabulani also features morning and evening vehicle game drives, balloon safaris, bush walks, bird-watching, clay-pigeon shooting and a visit to the worldrenowned Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Rates for the entire Zidoga Suite start at approximately $4,590 per night, inclusive of all game-viewing (excluding balloon safaris), elephant-back safaris, accommodation, meals, beverages, butler and laundry service, children’s programs and transfers from the Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. HLO Offers Real Travel Experiences M I LT T H O M A S
Hamdy takes group to White Desert.
I
f you are looking for a tour operator to take your clients to Egypt, Africa or the Holy Land, you cannot do better than HLO Tours out of Orlando, Florida. Why? First of all, HLO has been providing fully customized tours of Egypt (as well as Israel, Jordan, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Botswana and Zambia) since 1987. The company’s founder and president, Hamdy Nossair, was born in Egypt and he is an archeologist. If you are going to Egypt, who better to take you than an Egyptian-American archeologist? Secondly, his trips are custom-designed for groups from two to two hundred. On a typical 10-day itinerary you will see the Great Pyramids, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum, Ramses II mummy, King Tut’s immense treasures and his tomb, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Aswan Dam and all the other historical sites you have seen on television or read in books. He will also take you to places you never heard of, but you will never forget them once he shows you. Hamdy’s tours are not only customized – they are personalized. You will not only see farmers working the fields as they did 5,000 years ago, you will have tea with them. You will stay in five-star hotels, but Hamdy will take you to the most popular local restaurants to eat authentic Egyptian food. If you are interested in shopping for the many unique items Egypt has

to offer, he will help you bargain for them. Not a shopper? Then Hamdy will take you to one of the many sidewalk cafes (only the best ones) where you can sip tea or coffee and watch people walk by from every corner of the globe. As an exclusive bonus, Hamdy will take you to the farming village where he grew up, where his brothers and sisters will prepare a meal, take you to the fields, visit local schools, sit with the mayor and other village officials. You will meet everyday folks who will be delighted to take you into their homes and see how they live – not through the filter of commercial tourism, but totally natural, just as they lived when Hamdy was a child and for thousands of years before him. There you will discover the true meaning of family. Most important of all, you would expect to pay a king’s ransom for experiences like this, but HLO Tours offers very competitive rates and only the finest accommodations, including the best Nile cruise boats and most professional tour guides. His company motto is, “Come to Egypt as a tourist and leave as a friend.” Just talk with Americans who have traveled with him before over the past 22 years (he will provide names and contact information) and you will quickly learn how special Hamdy and his company are. Go to Egypt with him and you will quickly learn how special YOU are.

AFRICA CIVILIZATION IN THE WILDERNESS WITH ABENTEUER AFRIKA SAFARI Abenteuer Afrika is a pioneer in elegant desert dining in Namibia, having organized everything from a five-course repast for two to a dinner event for 800. Depending upon budget, clients can choose to dine al-fresco under the Namibian sky, or in a white marquee tent. Tables, chairs, centerpieces, silverware, place settings, outdoor heaters, a bar area, the kitchen, music, dance floor, red-carpet entryway are client choices. Abenteuer tests and retests everything prior to the actual event. Sites must be pristine, generators, catering equipment and comfort facilities inspected—even directions to the sites are double-checked. Locations are chosen for their spectacular views of the area as well as that of the setting sun. Sparkling wine and oysters on the half shell are a favorite starter. A candle-lit path welcomes guests, and more than 300 more candles decorating the surrounding mountainsides create soft serene lighting. Alternatives include fire spinners, Marimba band players, thrumming African drums and even champagne delivered by parachutists. Within minutes, guests forget they’re in the middle of the desert, as they relax, chat, dine, and listen to music under the canopy of stars that is the Namibian sky. Many desert dinners last well into the next day as visitors become highly reluctant to leave. Abenteuer Afrika Safari also goes to great lengths, before and after our functions to preserve the environment, ensuring sites look
as though no one was there after all have left. Abenteuer Afrika loves the desert and holds itself accountable to its preservation. To that end, Abenteuer also dedicates a percentage of revenue to desert rehabilitation. Abenteuer Afrika, www.abenteuerafrika.com

There are also partnerships with other organizations and associations to share APTA’s African expertise. The APTA National Forum is open to all members. Hosted annually by a different chapter, each Forum has a unique focus. Recently, new offerings of selected seminars, panel discussions, guest speakers and other components have provided even more value to the general meeting. In the nearly 30 years of its existence, APTA has grown to 13 active chapters, with over 200 corporate members and additional corporate associate members located in the United States, Europe and Africa. AFRICA VANTAGE WORLD TRAVEL HELPS GUESTS REDISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF AFRICA Although it has been recently in the news just for its political unrest and famine, what’s not seen and heard about in the media is the Africa worth visiting—a continent of exquisite natural beauty, fierce but stunning wildlife, and unique cultures. Fifteen years ago, no one would have believed South Africa would host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, or that Kenyan or Tanzanian national parks would expand exponentially into the luxury camps market. Safaris have become a huge draw to these areas, perfect for glimpsing the elusive “Big Five”—buffalo, leopard, elephant, lion, and rhino. Varying levels of intensity can be found for safari trips depending on parks visited and with lodging ranging from outdoor tent camping in “Hemingway’s” style to eco-lodge resorts. South Africa is also an area of powerful natural beauty that can only be experienced. Canyons, mountain ranges, caves, and waterfalls connect the savanna region to the sea. To the far north, Egypt offers mysterious structures and rich history. Located at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe, Egypt became a prime location for travel and trade years ago.
