Rob Katz

From defining luxury travel to transforming an industry, the CEO of Vail Resorts answers questions from ski enthusiasts around the world. VINCENT LALANNE, Director, Les 3 Vallées Ski Resort, France: What does luxury travel mean at Vail Resorts? ROB KATZ: Luxury is customizable and should be tailored to meet each guest’s desires and needs. At Vail Resorts, we place the highest importance on offering an unparalleled guest experience, and investing more than $500 million over the last five years. Our approach encompasses individualized service where employees are empowered and eager to recognize opportunities to elevate the guest experience and then go above and beyond to exceed expectations. Luxury at Vail Resorts is defined by great attention to detail and by having every guest’s need anticipated before the guest even has to think about it. ALEJANDRO WIEBE—“MARLEY”, Argentine TV Host/Celebrity, Argentina: The Epic Pass started as a season lift ticket pass providing access to all the Vail Resorts’, but it seems to have turned into a lifestyle now. Did you imagine this was going to be as huge as it is? RK: Vail Resorts set out to revolutionize the experience for our guests with the inception of the Epic Pass in 2008, and I’m proud to say that we now sell the pass in more than 80 countries around the globe. You’re right—the Epic Pass embodies a lifestyle of unlimited, unrestricted fun, adventure and experiences of a lifetime for all of our guests. The Epic Pass also gives us the opportunity to reward our most loyal guests with the best perks like the Epic Pass Club, which provides even more value from the pass through exclusive deals and events. CARLOS FERRIRINHA, President, MCF Consutoria & Conhecimento, Luxury Brand Marketing Agency, Brazil: How do you anticipate the “Millennial” generation shifting the approach and/or delivery of your product? How do you think

Vail Resorts will need to adjust, transform, or evolve to be still considered and attractive for this generation? In your opinion, what are the main challenges and opportunities of this generational shift? RK: Vail Resorts is the industry leader and is constantly innovating and investing to enhance the guest experience at our world-class mountain resorts. As the most connected generation in history, we recognize the importance of integrating technology into multiple touch points to appeal to Millennials and we’ve made huge strides into integrating this into our business. From our complimentary mobile app, EpicMix, which allows skiers and riders to socially share their on-mountain experiences, to free Wi-Fi in Gondola One at Vail and mobile ticketing across our resorts, Vail Resorts is always looking for ways to stay ahead of trends and meet the needs of all guests including Millennials. Our mountains offer limitless possibilities both on and off mountain for adventure, unique experiences and creativity. BJØRN TORE LARSEN, Sales Manager, Iceland Air, Norway: The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Beaver Creek and Vail were a great success and attracted a global fan base; will we see any of the resorts take on similar major events in the near future? RK: Hosting the World Championships in Beaver Creek and Vail this past February was an incredible honor and a tremendous opportunity to share our resorts with the world. Our mountain resorts frequently host world-class events such as the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships in Vail, the Dew Tour in Breckenridge and the Birds of Prey Men’s Alpine World Cup races in Beaver Creek, where the world’s best athletes compete for

gold. Continuing the legacy, Park City has been awarded the 2019 FIS Freestyle and Snowboard World Championships. WALDEMAR FRANCO, President, Rodavento (ECO-Adventure) Hotels, Mexico: People always say, “you come for the winters, and stay for the summers.” How important is the Epic Discovery concept for the development of summer resort operations? RK: Although Vail Resorts is better known for winter, summer is a hidden treasure at our resorts. In the summer, many of the resorts offer summer camps for children during the day, allowing parents to reward themselves with a break while still enjoying an extraordinary family vacation. Our resorts have historically offered extensive culinary and cultural events year-round, and Epic Discovery will add significantly to the overall experience for our guests. Epic Discovery is designed to connect our guests—young and old alike—with the outdoors in an active, fun and engaging way. The new activities will include things like ziplines and canopy tours, alpine coasters, mountain bike parks, multi-use trails and ropes courses as well as thoughtfully planned interpretive and educational components throughout.

Vail Resorts’ New Down Under Wonder

With the recent acquisition of Perisher, Australia, the Epic Pass has now become the year-round pass to snowsports paradise.

4 WINTER 2015/16

Just imagine: a ski and snowboard season that never ends and spans two continents on opposite sides of the globe. That heavenly vision for any winter enthusiast has now become a reality with Vail Resorts’ purchase of Perisher in New South Wales, Australia. “The acquisition of our first international mountain resort is a significant milestone for our company. We’re thrilled to welcome the guests and employees of Perisher, Australia’s largest and most iconic resort, into the Vail Resorts family and deepen ties with one of our most

important international markets,” said Rob Katz, chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts. He then goes on to say, “We see this as a ground-breaking acquisition that will dramatically enhance the connection between our company and Australian skiers and riders. We also see the acquisition as a natural fit, as Perisher is the Australian leader in innovation and guest experience—both hallmarks of Vail Resorts.” Located in Kosciuszko National Park in South Eastern New South Wales, Perisher is the largest ski resort in the Southern

Hemisphere and the most visited ski resort in Australia. The resort boasts over 1,200 hectares of skiable terrain, 47 lifts, seven mountain peaks, five terrain parks, more than 100 groomed runs, night skiing and over 100 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails. It is well-positioned, with access to the country’s largest cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane. All of this just adds to the news that Epic Pass purchasers will now receive unlimited and unrestricted skiing at Perisher. Cheers to year-round snowsports!

Boom Town

Whether it’s precious metals or fresh powder, Park City is legendary for its mother lode of riches. First came silver. And now, with the Canyons merger, this amazing, all-new resort is nothing short of solid gold. A little more than 13 years ago, hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe descended upon Park City, Utah, as the world’s best athletes chased their quest for gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Millions more across the world tuned into their TVs and watched as the fortnight of drama unfolded. While the 2002 Olympic Games may have etched the small resort town into the world’s consciousness, it was precious metal of another kind that first put this mountain town on the map more than 150 years ago: silver. First explored by early Mormon pioneers on their journey west in the late 1840s, it wasn’t until the early 1860s that gold, silver and lead ore were first discovered in the mountains surrounding Park City. And, like Northern California some 10-plus years earlier, there was no stopping the flood of fortune-hunters to come. The rush was on. Legions of prospectors and adventurers from around the globe began flooding into the area with hopes of striking it rich. Park City was born, and less than a decade later, in 1872, the area’s first major silver producer—the Ontario Mine—was discovered. Historical side note: The Ontario Mine was later purchased by George Hearst, father of newspaper publisher—and architect/proprietor of the extravagantly opulent Hearst Castle— William Randolph Hearst.

slopes. And countless remnants—including the weathered remains of the CaliforniaComstock and Silver King Mines—can be discovered, up close, throughout the area. Now home to 115 black diamonds ski runs, Park City was once home to a different kind of riches; the Victorian grandeur of historic Main Street, where more than 60 buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and it’s easy for visitors to quickly get a sense of what this iconic American West boom town was a century and a half ago.

Women get ready to board the underground skier subway for a day of skiing.

By 1892, however, another mine—the Silver King—was grabbing all the glory (and riches) and quickly becoming one of the most famous silver mines in the world. Fortunes were made (and lost), millionaires were born, and at their peak, Park City’s mines and abundant veins yielded more than $400 million in silver. History has also shown us that pulling silver out of the hills wasn’t the only activity the miners enjoyed during Park City’s heyday. In fact, dating as far back as the 1920s, they were using their underground train and shaft network to access the mountain for skiing— and aerial trams once used for hauling ore became what could be called the resort’s very first chairlifts. Head out on the mountain and reminders of the town’s silver mining past are everywhere. More than 1,600 kilometers of old silver mine workings and tunnels still exist beneath Park City’s (and neighboring Deer Valley’s)

Going Huge Park City and Canyons resorts merge to create the U.S.’s largest ski resort – and totally redefine North America’s ski experience. Welcome to the bigger, better, new Park City. Thanks to an all-new, high-speed gondola—aptly named the Interconnect— what skiers and riders once knew as the separate Park City and Canyons resorts is now one single, 2,900-plus hectare winter playground. Starting with the 2015/16 ski season, guests from around the world will enjoy the fruits of more than $50 million in capital improvements. Major upgrades to the infrastructure and guest amenities of both resorts will make this one of the most ambitious programs in U.S. ski industry history, and in the process will transform the face of North America’s skiing and riding forever.

Après-Ski Highlight High West Distillery & Saloon

Part distillery and part gastro-saloon, High West creates American craft whiskey—and Western-inspired vittles to go with it—at its finest. It also happens to be open seven days a week.

They like to refer to themselves as “the world’s first and only ski-in distillery and ‘gastrosaloon,’” and we have no argument with that. They’re also the oldest distillery in Utah, open and operating since 1870.

since focused on making and aging more of their own whiskey, they continue to ship in whiskeys from other states as well. “We’re really good at blending,” he says, “so that’s what we’ll continue to do.” Visitors can choose to drop by/ski-in to the historic Distillery & Saloon, where bartenders are serving up flights of High West’s signature whiskeys (or stirring up an interesting menu of tasty cocktails if that’s your preference) alongside delectable gastropub apps and entrées. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to come in straight from the slopes to a crackling fire and welcoming dram of craft bourbon or rye at day’s end? Or, if a full distillery experience is on your wish list of must-do’s, head out to Blue Sky Ranch, 32 kilometers outside of Park City and immerse yourself in all things whiskey (and a few vodkas too). The new facility is spectacular, massive and flooded with natural light, creating a truly awe-inspiring (and almost-churchlike) experience. All life in the distillery revolves around its centerpiece: a gleaming 6,056-liter copper pot still, handcrafted in and imported from Scotland—with several more on the way, we’re told. Visitors can stroll through the 836 squaremeter guest center, which includes a gift shop, tasting room, private meeting and dining rooms and a

larger-scale restaurant iteration of the High West Saloon. Distillery tours and educational tastings (our favorite: High West Whiskey Campfire, which happens to be the world’s only blend of scotch, bourbon and rye) are open to the public. Guests can also book VIP tours, tastings and meals in one of the distillery’s several private rooms. Bottom line: If you’re a whiskey savant or even just mildly curious about this magical amber elixir, the High West Distillery & Saloon should be a mandatory item on your Park City itinerary.

“ We’re really good at blending, so that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

Located in Old Town Park City, at exactly 2,134 meters at the bottom of Park City’s Quittin’ Time run and next to the Town Lift, High West Distillery & Saloon’s aim is classically simple and hearkens back to the spirit of Park City’s silver mining halcyon days. The brainchild of proprietor and former biochemist David Perkins, High West Distillery was born of the Georgia-raised Perkins’ intense passion for bourbon and his desire to make whiskey himself. After training under the tutelage of master distillers from both Kentucky and Scotland, Perkins was ready to set out on his own, opening the High West Distillery & Saloon in a 100-year-old restored livery stable near Park City’s historic Main Street. Inspired by cowboys and the West, Perkins debuted his first product soon after: Rendezvous Rye, a blend of two Kentucky rye whiskeys (one aged 16 years, the other six). While Perkins and High West have

As one of the premier ski and snowboard destinations in the country, it’s only natural Park City should also be well-equipped to serve its winter vacation guests after a hard day on the slopes with top-shelf après-ski activities. With numerous bars, brewpubs, lounges and saloons to choose from along historic Main Street, we looked to the Waldorf-Astoria Park City’s Concierge desk to help us narrow down the list. Here’s what we came up with: TROLL HALLEN LOUNGE Hidden inside Stein Eriksen Lodge, the Troll Hallen Lounge is everything you’d expect an onmountain drinking establishment to be. Roaring fire … plush, cozy seats … exquisite views … and, of course, a fully provisioned bar to help you take it all in properly. Feeling like cocktails al fresco? Then step out onto the Lodge’s deck, libation in hand, and snuggle up to one of several firepits. steinlodge.com NO NAME SALOON Although technically a “private club,” don’t let that scare you: the No Name Saloon, and its local legions, simply loves visitors and guests. Whimsically festooned with antiques and mining memorabilia, this classic Main Street drinking establishment and its well-equipped bar has, in its own words, been “helping people forget their names since 1903.” nonamesaloon.net

BONEYARD SALOON AND KITCHEN Yet another home run from Jesse Schettler, who also owns the No Name Saloon and Butcher’s Chop House, the Boneyard is a local favorite, sporting roll-up garage doors (for indoor/ outdoor drinking and dining at its best) and a heated rooftop deck with views to all three of the area’s ski resorts. Funky, laid-back and fun, Boneyard—and the adjacent Wine Dive wine bar—is a must for skiers and riders looking to refuel after a day on the slopes. boneyardsaloon.com

A Celebration of Cinema: Park City and the Sundance Film Festival

Robert Redford and John Cooper talk backstage at the documentary premier of “What Happened, Miss Simone?”

Storytellers broaden our minds: engage, provoke, inspire, and ultimately, connect us. – Robert Redford PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SUNDANCE INSTITUTE

22 WINTER 2015/16

Every January for over 30 years, the Sundance Film Festival brings together the most original cinematic storytellers and equally adventurous audiences for its annual showcase of independent filmmakers from around the globe. Close to 50,000 movie lovers descend upon Park City, and for 11 days, Main Street buzzes non-stop with equal doses of movie and people watching magic. The Festival’s roots date back to 1978, when Robert Redford created the Sundance Institute as a haven for film directors and writers to work outside of mainstream Hollywood and enjoy the freedom to create independent films that eschewed the formulaic big studio blockbusters of the day. The concept was taken one step further when, in 1984, Sundance took over (and rechristened) the U.S. Film Festival and turned their focus on connecting these filmmakers with equally independent, like-minded audiences. The seeds of an American independent filmmaking phenomenon were sown, and while the Festival grew in the years following, it was 1989, with the unveiling of Steven Soderbergh’s now landmark sex, lies and videotape, that really put Sundance on the map.

Since then, the list of directors who have broken out at Sundance reads like an independent filmmakers Hall of Fame: Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Kevin Smith, Edward Burns, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, Christopher Nolan … the list is endless. And so is the mix of A-list Hollywood talent and independent film aficionados that come together on Park City’s Main Street for 11 days each January. We spoke with TREVOR GROTH, the Sundance Festival’s Director of Programming, about this global event, its defining moments and where to spot your favorite stars. (Spoiler: Pretty much anywhere.) EPIC WINTER GUIDE: Tell us briefly about the Festival’s mission and history. TREVOR GROTH: With Sundance Institute, Robert Redford envisioned a retreat of sorts, with director and writer “labs” where filmmakers could work independently of Hollywood and what was the more “commercial action blockbuster formula” of that time [late ‘70s and early ‘80s]. The Festival grew from that concept, with the goal of bringing these films to audiences hungering for more creative and unique ideas. Speaking for myself, I love it— every year still feels fresh and exciting! EWG: With the increasing number of international films making their debut at the Festival, do you find a larger number of foreign fans coming to Park City as well? TG: We do, but it wasn’t always that way. We have grown, obviously, but so has the independent film industry—and the definition of an independent film in general. Today, our entries could, and do, range from a Tarantino feature to a short shot on an iPhone in Sri Lanka. It’s awesome. And then there’s Park City—the perfect destination for any film lover who also loves to ski. EWG: How has the Festival evolved otherwise over its nearly 40-year history? TG: Well, it’s really been the idea of both Sundance and independent film growing together. And with digital cameras and smartphones, and YouTube and Netflix, more and more creative people can not only shoot a film, but get huge online exposure to it as well. Still, at the end of the day, people want to engage these films and interact as a “community.” Nothing can replicate the

energy created by watching a film live in a theatre with hundreds of like-minded fans. EWG: What are some of your most memorable Sundance moments? TG: Wow, there really are so many. For me, it’s always been about the films, and the audience’s reactions to the films. Like Napoleon Dynamite … and Blair Witch Project … Reservoir Dogs … Memento. All breakout films that resonated deeply with Festival audiences and went on to impact the mainstream film industry in various ways. Not to mention create a few now legendary directors in the process, like Tarantino and Nolan. EWG: Describe the perfect Sundance Festival day. TG: What a lot of people may not know is that there are films running all day, from morning til midnight. For me, I’d catch a morning showing, then ski a few hours, grab a long lunch, and get ready for one of the higher-profile evening films. And of course, the premiere party afterward. Main Street Park City is one big party every night during Sundance! EWG: OK, final question to satisfy the movie star fan in all of us … Where would we go to have the best chance of spotting a Brad Pitt or Emma Stone? TG: Honestly, the best place is in the theatres. Actors come to the Festival to support their films, and there are Q&A sessions after each premiere where audience members—fans—can ask questions. Of course, you might also literally bump into a

huge star on Main Street. On the slopes. Or on a lift or the gondola! What’s great is that everyone is here for the same reason: to enjoy original, first-run films, in every category imaginable, in a gorgeous ski resort setting. It really doesn’t get much better! The Sundance Festival is scheduled for 21-31 January 2016. For more details or to buy tickets, check out www.sundance.org/ festivals/sundance-film-festival.

The venue is, to say the least, mind-boggling in its sheer scale, with six massive Nordic ski jumps, the 1,335-meter sliding track (with five starting areas), a freestyle aerials winter training and competition hill, and, of course, one of the Park’s other defining attractions, the newly renovated Big Air pool. Guests can also explore Olympic and alpine sports history with a guided tour through the Park or a visit to the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center, which houses both the Alf Engen Ski and 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museums. “Think of it as Park City’s other playground,” says Holcomb, who’s been somewhat busy collecting hardware around the globe since his Olympic gold, winning five FIBT World Championships and six Overall FIBT World Cup crowns. Park City will always be home, however. “There is no other place in the world I would have rather grown up. It is such an amazing town,” says Steve, who grew up racing on the Park City Ski Team. “It’s…a skiers dream.”

ATHLETE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BMW/USBSF, LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHY BY UTAH OLYMPIC PARK

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to rocket down a track in an Olympic bobsled, tucked in behind the driver as you pinball, side to side, at 100+ kilometers per hour? Then you need to pay a visit to Utah Olympic Park, located a quick 13 kilometers outside Park City proper, and turn that curiosity into adrenaline-pumping reality with a ride on the Comet Bobsled. Winter or summer, the Comet is Olympic Park’s signature attraction, where thrillseekers can climb into an Olympicspec four-man bobsled and hurtle down the official 2002 Olympic Sliding Track through 15 turns in less than 60 seconds—while pulling 5G’s of force! “Breathtaking” and “incredible” are just two of the words often overheard as visitors disembark, giggling and giddy, at ride’s end. “It will change every thought, idea and conception you have of the sport of bobsledding,” says 2010 Vancouver Olympics Gold Medalist and Park City native Steve Holcomb.

Stand atop Vail Mountain and you’ll be gazing at more than 2,104 hectares of terrain, seven legendary Back Bowls spanning 11 kilometers and the most groomed terrain on the planet. BIRDS OF PREY Located at the base of the

Larkspur and Birds of Prey lifts, Beaver Creek’s newest on-mountain restaurant, the 830-seat Talons Restaurant, includes a full indoor/outdoor bar and an outdoor smokehouse. The architecture pays homage to the Austrian roots of alpine skiing, also mirroring barns built by Beaver Creek’s original settlers. BELGIAN FAR MHOUSE Dine in an authentic 100-year-old landmark farmhouse at Mirabelle, just inside the main resort gates. Belgian Master Chef Daniel Joly dishes European-inspired fare sourced from local ingredients like Colorado lamb or fresh-caught native fish. SLEIGH RIDE AND DINE For a true winter treat, book a reservation at Beano’s Cabin, nestled along the ridge of the mountain and accessible only by an open-air sleigh ride pulled by a snowcat. After the snowy ride, you’ll enjoy live music and a five-course meal prepared by Executive Chef Bill Greenwood.

SK I

PRO TR ACKS This is where it all happens. Take the Cinch Express lift to the summit of Beaver Creek Mountain, where you can follow in the tracks of world-class athletes like Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso, Tina Maze, Anna Fenniger and Aksel Lund Svindal. For the men’s Birds of Prey downhill course, hop on Zoom Room until it meets the double-black Golden Eagle trail, or trace the women’s Raptor downhill course from Park 101 down Solitude onto Peregrine and finally veering left onto Kestrel. NORDIC FUN With 150 downhill trails, it’s hard to imagine needing more to explore at Beaver Creek, but for those who want to branch out (or who don’t ski or ride), the resort also offers more than 32 kilometers of groomed and rustic cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Rent your equipment and book a lesson at the Nordic Sports Center at the base of the Strawberry Park Express Lift, then take the lift to McCoy Park for one of only three lift-accessed Nordic trail systems in the country.

FASTER ACCESS It’s all about options, and last season Beaver Creek gave visitors another option by replacing the Centennial Express Lift with a new high-speed combination lift. Guests can choose between a 10-person gondola or a six-passenger chairlift, boosting uphill capacity by 35 percent to an area of the mountain that serves everyone from beginners to advanced skiers.

SLEEP

BACHELOR PAD Already a favorite, The

Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch recently underwent a $15 million upgrade to its 180 guest rooms and suites as well as common areas. The massive log cabinstyle lodge sits at the base of the Bachelor Gulch Express high-speed quad and includes an award-winning 1,951 squaremeter spa and fitness center as well as famed chef Wolfgang Puck’s fine dining restaurant, Spago. TAKE FLIGHT Located just steps from the Strawberry Park Express Lift, The Osprey is the closest hotel to a chairlift in the country. If that’s not slopeside convenience, we don’t know what is, and it’s got some serious street cred: in 2012 it was named the #1 Top Resort in the Continental United States in Travel + Leisure’s readers’ survey. A STAY IN THE GLADES For a more intimate experience, book a room amongst the trees at The Pines Lodge. Rising from a grove of stately pines and aspens, The Pines offers 60 guest rooms with impressive views of Beaver Creek and ski-in/ski-out access. Make sure to have a meal at the Grouse Mountain Grill, one of the top-ranked restaurants in Beaver Creek.

and more. Colorado Candy Company created exclusive Beaver Creek-logoed chocolate bars as well as molded ski boots, snowflakes and snowmen; classic Pepsi products made with real cane sugar bring back nostalgic memories and can be enjoyed on the sundeck. It’s the sweetest place at 2,999 meters! EAT, SKI, DRINK What pairs better with a day of skiing than an evening of food and wine tasting? We can’t think of anything! That’s why we’ll be prepping our bellies for Beaver Creek’s annual FOOD & WINE Weekend 21-24 January 2016. Improve your kitchen skills with interactive cooking demonstrations, or leave it to the pros and just indulge your taste buds.

SKI AND SNACK You can’t ski all day on an empty stomach. Luckily, you don’t have to leave the slopes to snag a bite. Coast in to Sevens, located on Peak 7 at the base of the Independence SuperChair, order your fast fuel of choice at the express service window, then head back up for a few more runs. Or take in the panoramic views on Peak 9 at The Overlook while you enjoy poutine or house made turkey pot pie. HAPPY HOUR HEAVEN Amazing any time, Diner’s Choice winner Blue River Bistro really reels us in with two daily happy hours featuring two-for-one appetizers and martinis from 3-6 p.m. and 9 p.m.-close. Stay for dinner and indulge in dishes from one of Breck’s most-loved menus. Order the New York Strip with Sherry Steak Sauce—you won’t be sorry. COMFORT WITH A TWIST Meatloaf. Mac and cheese. Tater tots. Matt Fackler (also the chef/owner of MainStreet staple Relish) serves up these comfort food favorites and more with a modern twist at his aptly named Twist restaurant. Make sure to save room for dessert, as the Bourbon Maple Crème Brûlée is not to be missed.

Breck has a lot of mountain to explore. Completely comprised of expert-only terrain, Peak 10 offers steep runs and challenging moguls. Peak 9 is best for beginners, with wide-open avenues. Situated in the heart of the resort, Peak 8 is packed with trails for all levels, three terrain parks and an alpine coaster. The Colorado SuperChair lift was upgraded from a four to a six passenger express, offering faster access to some of the resort’s best slopes. Intermediate skiers will feel at home on Peak 7’s blue runs, while those seeking an above-treeline experience will get their thrills on Peak 6. NEW TERR AIN In 2013, Breckenridge opened Peak 6: 220 hectares of new terrain (the largest expansion in North America in over a decade), including the resort’s first blue trails and bowls above treeline. Coast down these intermediate runs from the top of Kensho SuperChair, or hike up to sample the extreme terrain of Beyond Bowl and Serenity Bowl. MOUNTAIN HIGH Advanced skiers and riders will want to head back to Peak 8 for a ride on North America’s highest chairlift: the Imperial Express SuperChair. The lift rises 3,913 meters above sea level and offers views of some of Colorado’s famed peaks: Mount Massive, Pike’s Peak, Gray’s Peak, and more. From the summit, you can hit four double-black bowls, or turn left for a hike to the Lake Chutes and Snow White.

SLEEP

LIVE THE SLOPE LIFE Can’t bear to leave the mountain? Now you don’t have to when you stay in one of the luxury ski-in/ski-out condominiums at One Ski Hill Place. You’ll be in the center of the action at the base of Peak 8. At the end of the day, shuck your skis and take a dip in one of the indoor

pools, or hit the lanes at the private bowling alley. Make fresh tracks in the morning with the help of ski valets and boot warmers. MAIN STREET TO MOUNTAIN

Get the best of both worlds at The Village at Breckenridge. This longtime favorite offers ski-in/ski-out access at the base of Peak 9, and it’s only half a block from the inviting shops and restaurants of Main Street. Traveling with little ones or have a beginner in the group? The Village includes an on-site children’s center and is right next door to Breckenridge Ski & Ride School. SKI LODGE STYLE Combining a rustic ski-lodge look (stone fireplaces, log beams, antler chandeliers) with modern amenities (stainless steel in-room appliances, hot tubs, heated parking), Mountain Thunder Lodge is both charming and luxurious. Bonus: You also get access to the bowling alley, aquatics center, media rooms and billiards table located at One Ski Hill Place.

DRINK & DINE TOP OF THE WORLD This isn’t

your typical on-mountain fast food experience. The Alpenglow Stube, perched high atop North Peak at nearly 3,505 meters, is literally the highest AAA Four-Diamond dining experience in North America. Go all out and give yourself over to the chef’s special seven-course tasting menu, or take the ultimate luxurious break from the slopes for Stube lunch or Sunday brunch. Sample dishes include Maple & Apple Glazed Elk Loin with Sweet Potato Purée, Pan Seared Corvina Black Bass with Littleneck Clams and Wild Boar Bacon and Tuxedo Mousse with Raspberry Coulis for dessert. FONDUE FOR ALL Warm bread, melted cheese and a glass of wine. Whether you’re revving up for a romantic evening or dinner with the family, you really can’t go wrong at Der Fondue Chessel, located in The Outpost at the summit of North Peak. You’ll access the stunning Bavarian-style beer hall via two gondolas and enjoy traditional Swiss fondues made from a savory blend of Gruyère and Emmentaler cheese, but make sure to save room at the end for chocolate fondue with fresh fruit and pound cake. RIDE TO A R ANCH Want to skip the gondola? Take a horse instead! Keystone’s Sleigh Ride Dinner excursion features a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the Soda Creek Valley, ending at a rustic homestead where you’ll saddle up to an authentic cowboy dinner of freshly-prepared comfort food favorites complete with Dutch apple pie and homemade ice cream. You’ll be warmed by the cozy confines of the Back Ranch and the opportunity to snuggle up with friends and family while being serenaded by a live folk singer.

KEY TERR AIN With three mountains

to explore, you might well be wondering where to start. Beginners

and intermediate skiers will love the long green and blue groomers on Dercum Mountain. From the summit, hike to The Windows for prime tree skiing and spectacular views of the Ten Mile Range. Keystone’s second mountain, North Peak is where you’ll find bumpy blue and black runs, as well as some of the resort’s best food options at The Outpost. Want the mountain to yourself? Head to The Outback, (the third peak) which offers expert terrain. Adventurous skiers and riders can catch a ride with Keystone Adventure Tours for a full day of cat skiing in the pristine upper bowls, or enjoy single-ride access to North and South Bowl from the top of the Outback. JUMPS AND JIBS Got some new tricks to show off (or a few you want to learn)? Keystone’s A51 Terrain Park is the place to do it. With more than 100 terrain features and five distinct sections to help you progress from beginner to advanced, A51 has been recognized as one of the country’s premier terrain parks. It’s even got its own dedicated lift and hashtag: #keystoneA51. A ride on the A51 lift will often have you sitting next to one of the world’s most recognizable pros, who call A51 home while training for top world-wide competitions. SKIING IN THE DARK There’s no need to end your ski day when the sun goes down at Keystone. The resort offers expansive night skiing terrain, truly a one of a kind experience. Enjoy the slopes after dark and under the lights, while taking in the breathtaking night sky from more than 3,353 meters. Warm up with a hot chocolate and snack at the Summit House while enjoying Colorado’s longest ski day.

EAT AT ALTITUDE You don’t have to be wearing

your skis to catch some air at the all-new Snow Hut restaurant, located next to the base of Silverlode lift and the Park City terminal for the Interconnect Gondola. Get ready for hearty and healthy options like freshly-prepared salads, soups and sandwiches while feasting on breathtaking views of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains. Park City provides a historic background for first tracks.

CAPITAL IDEA Creating the country’s largest resort is no simple task, and with $50 million worth of improvements underway, Park City’s “re-boot” will be the most dramatic transformation in the history of the U.S. ski industry. HOOK-UP Park City and the former Canyons Resort are now forever happily joined via the all-new Interconnect Gondola, an eightpassenger, high-speed gondola running from the base of the existing Silverlode Lift (at Park City) to the Flatiron Lift (at Canyons). Added bonus: Access to two new trails into Canyons from Pinecone Ridge. FACE LIFTS Faster, larger lifts mean more runs per day—and bigger grins per mile. Plans call for King Con lift to be upgraded from a fourperson to six-person high-speed detachable chair, while Motherlode will switch from a fixed-grip triple to a four-person high-speed detachable. NUMBERS GAME If you like your stats, then you’re going to love the new Park City Resort, which now boasts more than 35 kilometers of lifts, 17 peaks and 14 bowls, 300-plus trails, almost 500 snowmaking guns, 16 on-mountain dining locations and one 6.5-meter half-pipe.

THE CHATEAU South Lake Tahoe has undergone a change since your last visit, no matter when that was. Having opened this autumn, The Chateau is directly across from Heavenly Village and features additional shops, restaurants and, best of all, bars. CLASSY EATS Prefer a dinner near the beach but without the sand? Jimmy’s Restaurant at the Landing Resort and Spa provides a gorgeous seating area with views of the beach and Lake Tahoe. Jimmy’s features wood-fired Greek and regional California cuisine and uses seasonal vegetables and locally-sourced ingredients, resulting in an ever-changing menu. A ZUL One of the newest hotspots in town is Azul Latin Kitchen, which opened just around the corner from its sister restaurant, Base Camp Pizza Co., in the Heavenly Village. Azul offers a lighter, fresher and healthier take on Mexican food and incorporates flavors from Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Order a tasty craft cocktail made with fresh squeezed juices and you’ll be in your own vacation paradise.

CALIFORNIA CRUSIN’ One of the best ways to tackle this massive resort is to take it state-by-state. Start your California day from the Heavenly Gondola with a ride

up Tamarack Express, gliding onto the California Trail. You’ll cross the state line into Cali before jumping on Sky Express. Follow Skyline Trail and then drop into Ski Ways Glades for some of the resort’s best morning tree runs. Once you’ve worked that powder, cruise down to the Umbrella Bar at Stein’s for a little R&R or over to Booyah’s Exotic Burgers and Brews for a custommade burger or one of the 97 different microbrews before challenging yourself in the trees of East Bowl Woods or the doubleblack moguls of The Face and Gunbarrel. A NEVADA DAY We didn’t forget you, Nevada. Warm up those legs with a friendly blue like Sam’s Dream from the top of the Tamarack Express, then follow Crossover to the base of the Olympic Express lift. From here, you can slalom through the trees in Bohemian Grove, or tackle the off-piste terrain of the Nevada Woods and The Burn. If you’re up for a hike, take the Dipper Express and then follow Skyline Trail. Put your skis on your shoulder and follow the tracks to the summit of Monument Peak, the resort’s highest in-bound terrain. By now, the double-black gated terrain of Mott and Killebrew Canyons should be open, the resort’s most challenging off-piste areas with steep rock drops and chutes. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of Heavenly’s DJ cat creating an on-mountain dance party. TERR AIN PARKS With so much extreme terrain already, you might be tempted to skip Heavenly’s terrain parks. Don’t! Beginners can hone their skills at Groove Park, located on the California side and accessed by Groove Chair or Patsy’s. From there, head up the mountain to Ante Up at the top of Tamarack Express and go all in on the features and halfpipe at High Roller Park, near the top of the resort on the California side.

pure big mountain adventure, where you’re almost guaranteed to make first tracks. Kirkwood is the sirens call for those whose middle name is “adventure.” Those who like their snow deep and their terrain steep.

WINTERGUIDE

79

Go on an unforgettable adventure in the back country with a Kirkwood guide.

YOU WANT SNOW? Kirkwood’s got snow. Fifteen meters of it to be exact and with a base elevation of 2,377 meters, the mountain’s ample powder is truly that: light, dry and deep. Locals call it “The K-Factor,” and after you’ve skied it once, you’ll be a believer for life. Wherever your tips are pointing, there’s adventure to be found, since this resort is known for its powder-dumping storms, steepand-deep terrain and gnarly cornices and cliffs. Located 56 kilometers from South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly, Kirkwood is still an undiscovered gem for many, a low-key resort that’s off the grid both literally and metaphorically. So those fresh tracks? They’re probably yours. 80 WINTER 2015/16

DR IN K & DIN E BITE BACK You’re shredding the bowls

on the backside of the mountain when all of a sudden—hunger strikes. Kirkwood has you covered. Head to Outback Grill near the base of Sunrise lift and take your pick from a menu of quick eats including a juicy burger or a tasty grilled barbecued chicken sandwich. After a quick lounge on “The Beach,” you’ll be ready for an afternoon of adventure. WESTERN ROOTS Dine in a turnof-the-century log cabin that once served as Kirkwood’s only post office and stagecoach depot. The historic Kirkwood Inn & Saloon was built in 1864 and now offers Western cuisine like its award-winning Comstock Chili and the Inn Keepers Meat Loaf. VIEWS AND BREWS Enjoy fine wine and views of the ridgeline from Off the Wall Bar and Grill, located in The Lodge at Kirkwood. Open for lunch every day and dinner Friday and Saturday, this intimate restaurant specializes in Southwest and Pacific Rim cuisine paired with California wines and microbrews.

SK I

MIXED COMPANY Experts laud Kirkwood for its balanced mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. Beginners should stick close to the Timber Creek Base Area, home to Kirkwood’s Ski & Ride Center and greens like Funny Bunny and Squirrel Ridge, as well as Adventure Land, a beginner’s terrain park. Intermediate skiers can greet the day with a ride up Sunrise lift for a morning run down Elevator Shaft. After that, take turns on either side of the ridge on blues like Easy Rider and Flying Carpet. There’s also plenty for the advanced skier or rider, with inbound steeps and chutes slanted up to 42 degrees. The front side of the resort is chock-full of singleblack runs, while a trip over the edge of the ridge to the backside opens up a world of double-black runs and bowls. POWDER HOUNDS If powder is your preference, you’ll find it here. Work your way along the ridge, starting with the drifts on Lookout Vista and Eagle Bowl, heading over to the powdery glades of Sentinel and Palisades Bowls. Then take chair 10, or 6 up 490 meters to the ridgeline to drop off a cornice or head over to the back bowls, where there are more opportunities to leave your mark. CAT SKIING Skip the lift lines and ride to the top in one of Expedition: Kirkwood’s snow cats. This is California’s only resort-based snow cat skiing operation, where private guides and pro patrollers wind their way up to Martin Point to give you an even more exhilarating experience.

SLEEP

JOIN THE CLUB Located slopeside, the

Mountain Club Hotel Condominiums offer ski-in/ski-out luxury with a sauna, hot tub, ski lockers, full kitchens, gas fireplaces, underground parking and more. Units range from double queen hotel rooms to two-bedroom loft condos. SNOW Y MEADOWS You’ll be less than 100 meters from Kirkwood’s most-popular lifts at the Meadowside Condos. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, views of the slopes, full kitchens, woodburning fireplaces, indoor hot tub and underground parking.

TOWNHOME LIVING Experience comfort and convenience at The Sentinels’ luxury two-bedroom townhomes, complete with a full kitchen, private garage, whirlpool tub and washer and dryer. Sleeps up to seven people, and kids will love the bunk beds.

PL AY

EVENTS Kicking off the season, it’s skier against skier, rider against rider, as top athletes converge on Kirkwood for the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, followed by North America’s two premier big mountain skiing and riding events with the IFSA’s Junior Freeskiing Tour and the North American Subaru Freeskiing Festival. SNOW GUIDES Kirkwood has some serious terrain, including lift-served backcountry areas, and the best way to see it all is through the resort’s one-ofa-kind Expedition: Kirkwood program. You might just learn something along the way, as the guided program offers avalanche certification courses, beacon training and specialty ski clinics. CROSS COUNTRY AND SNOWSHOE CENTER 80 kilometers

of groomed trails offer the most spectacular scenery and exciting terrain in the west. Located next to the Kirkwood Inn and nestled in a beautiful Alpine Valley, our diverse terrain offers excellent skiing for all abilities. Many trails feature interpretive signs providing for a more enlightening and meaningful visit. The “Kiddy Kilometer” is sure to keep the youngest skiers engaged. This one kilometer loop is lined with life-size animal cut-outs and flip-up signs. Sip on hot chocolate beside the wood burning stove in the day lodge or warm up in one of our three trailside warming huts, then finish the perfect day with a scrumptious meal at the historic Kirkwood Inn.

jack affleck, Director of Photography Vail Resorts

Candid Camera

For 25 years, Jack Affleck has shot the toughest, and most beautiful, of Vail Resorts’ terrain. For this issue, he turned his lens on another of our stunning local icons: 4-time World Champion skier and cover model Lindsey Vonn. EPIC WINTER GUIDE: So, what’s it like working with Lindsey? JACK AFFLECK: It was so easy, like hanging out with a friend shooting photos. In fact, I’d consider Lindsey a friend now. We met about five years ago, and I was actually a bit nervous at first. But she is so wonderful and genuine. And so photogenic—she always looks great. EWG: As Vail Resorts Director of Photography, you’ve shot thousands of on-mountain images. This cover assignment took a different direction, though. Tell us how you came up with it. JA: We wanted to create a different look for Lindsey. She is so well known and recognizable across the world as a champion skier, so we wanted to portray her in a more sophisticated, dressed-up light. We call it “après-sexy.” EWG: Speaking of the slopes, are you excited about the Park City-Canyons merger and all that new terrain to explore? JA: Honestly, I have never skied Park City but am dying to. Both mountains [Park City and Canyons] will be virtually new to me, so I’m really excited. Lots of fresh, new inspiration. And the size of the new resort is absolutely mind-boggling, so I’m really thrilled to

84 WINTER 2015/16

explore the mountains and the town, too! EWG: More exciting news comes by way of Australia, too, with Perisher now joining the Vail Resorts family. JA: Yes! And I have been dropping hints to get down there to go skiing in July [laughing]. That would be an eye-opener, skiing in summer! EWG: Do you have a favorite resort or mountain? JA: Well, they are all so different, and amazing in their own ways. I do have a couple on a bucket list, though, I’d really like to experience: both Canyons and Kirkwood on a powder day. And honestly, being off the mountain is pretty amazing, too. All of these resorts are gorgeous year-round, and each has a town with its own fun, vibrant energy. It’s cool to just relax and soak it all in. EWG: Last question, and be honest here … Do you ever just go out and ski and leave your camera at home? JA: You want to know the truth? No. [Chuckles] As a photographer, I feel an obligation … seriously … to capture moments that may never happen again. It’s in my blood, ingrained in me. I have a personal saying: “If you’re a photographer without a camera, you’re not.” So, yes, you’ll always see me out there with my blue camera pack.

We call it “après-sexy.”
