Remember that amazing show? When you laughed until your sides hurt, when you were moved to tears by that incredible violin solo, or when you screamed yourself hoarse at the hottest pop band ever? Since Elton John opened the Royal Concert Hall in superstar style on 27 November 1982, over five million people have come through our doors experiencing the most incredible live performances, from every genre of music, dance and comedy. After 30 fabulous years, we’ve found that certain areas of the Royal Concert Hall would benefit from a little love and attention. We have a whole programme of restoration and refurbishment planned, from our Box Office to backstage, but our first project is designed to benefit you – our loyal and much-valued audience.
The Big Red Seat Appeal
The Big Red Seat Appeal aims to raise enough funds to replace all 2,500 seats in the Royal Concert Hall auditorium. The cost to replace each seat is £300 giving us a fundraising target of £750,000. Nottingham City Council has pledged to match-fund all donations so every £1 you give becomes £2! So now we need to ask for your generous support to help us reach our target. As much or as little as you give, every donation will be essential to us in reaching our goal, and every single penny of your donation will go direct to The Big Red Seat Appeal Fund. You can donate in the following ways: • Make a donation or add a contribution to your next ticket purchase • Online at www.trch.co.uk • On the phone at 0115 989 5555 • At our Box Office • Complete the donation form • Contribute to our bucket collections at each performance 2

Every individual, group or business that contributes £300 or more will be celebrated for the next 30 years with a Big Red Seat Appeal commemorative plaque on a seat in the auditorium. Thank you to all of those who have supported our Big Red Seat Appeal so far through their generous donations, be they online, over the counter, on the phone, via bucket collections or through purchasing a seat outright. The total is steadily growing and with applications now in place to a number of Trusts and Foundations we look forward to moving closer to achieving our target over the coming months. Don’t forget you can find out who’s been sitting in our Big Red Seat and any exciting news we have to update you on at www.trch.co.uk by clicking on the Big Red Seat link on the right hand side of the home page. Your continued support is greatly appreciated in this new and exciting period of development for the Royal Concert Hall.

‘Tis Pity Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 November
‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore
By John Ford This vivid and violent Jacobean tragedy shows a brother and sister’s passionate descent into hell. Incest, religion and corrupt morality collide in this ‘sexy, stylish’ production (The Times), making this play as shocking and controversial today as it was almost four hundred years ago. Cheek by Jowl has established an international reputation for bringing ‘fresh life to the classics using intense, vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze’ (The Guardian). ‘A blazing, daring vision – a masterful evening’ Le Figaro Suitable for ages 16+ – contains partial nudity and themes of an adult, violent nature

Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery.

The Times ‘A night of continuous guilty pleasure... a superb production’ Daily Telegraph
Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC ‘Play For Today’ in 1977. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly. Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film directors. His numerous awards include Best Comedy Award for the stage play Goose Pimples, a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema, Film Critics Award for Best Film Life is Sweet, the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Secrets and Lies, and an Oscar for Topsy Turvy.

One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, with songs by Grant Olding.
The National Theatre’s smash-hit comedy, now a West End and Broadway sensation, comes to Nottingham with a cast including Rufus Hound as Francis Henshall. Richard Bean’s award-winning play is a glorious celebration of British comedy: a unique, laughout-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe... but Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother... who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers. To prevent discovery Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple. FINAL TOUR
Blood Brothers
Midnight Tango
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production – having recently celebrated its 24th year in London – continues to enjoy standing ovations at every performance.
Set in a late night bar in downtown Buenos Aires and featuring some of the finest Tango dancers in the world and live music, Midnight Tango takes you on a journey into the heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular and explosive evening not to be missed.
Written by Willy Russell, Blood Brothers tells the moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
No wonder Blood Brothers is ‘The musical for all time’.

The Mousetrap
A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap is famous around the world as being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre with over 23,000 performances. Famously, the Theatre Royal Nottingham hosted the play’s world première on 6 October 1952 prior to its record-breaking West End run and, to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, the legendary production returns to its birthplace with an all-star cast as part of its first ever UK tour. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

‘I am not what I am’
One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of Illyria.
In The Taming Of The Shrew two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful Bianca, whilst gold digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. One thing is certain – nobody does Shakespeare like Propeller. www.propeller.org.uk

Celebrating 30 years of the Royal Concert Hall Sunday 18 November 7pm
In 1982, Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall first opened its doors. The people and names that have graced its stage... if only this building could speak… the stories it could tell…
Community Event
To celebrate 30 years of entertainment in Nottingham’s now iconic and much-loved venue, over 200 dancers and musicians from across the city come together to TAK30VER the Royal Concert Hall for one night only. A speciallycommissioned orchestral score by Elizabeth Charlesworth will be performed live by a 21 piece orchestra and the NTU Choir conducted by Matthew Hopkins. On 27 November 1982, Elton John gave the inaugural concert to mark the opening of the exciting new Royal Concert Hall Nottingham. Since then millions of people have come through the doors of the Royal Concert Hall to experience outstanding live performances from every genre of music, dance and comedy. Now having reached our 30th Anniversary year, we are delighted to offer you a season of unique events designed to showcase this incredibly versatile and much-loved venue.
Under the artistic direction of renowned choreographer and director Filip Van Huffel of Retina Dance Company, both professional and community dancers – including Trinity School, and Oak Field School and Sports College – grace the stage for a performance that fuses a variety of musical and dance styles to create a show celebrating Nottingham and this very special venue. Tickets £10 Save 10% on Groups 10+, and 20% on Groups 20+
Following the access-all-areas Open Day on Saturday 13 October, our next event will be on Sunday 18 November for a one-off performance of TAK30VER, a specially commissioned celebration of the Royal Concert Hall’s astonishing acoustics and starstudded history... with everything from Hip Hop to a pin drop (details adjacent). We hope you can join us to help celebrate 30 years of unforgettable entertainment right here in the very heart of Nottingham. 18

Dynamic British conductor Andrew Gourlay makes his first appearance with Sinfonia Viva at the Royal Concert Hall and is joined by Norway’s Christian Ihle Hadland for Saint-Saëns’ spirited Second Piano Concerto. Robert Schumann praised its ‘Grecian lightness and grace’ but it’s the restless tensions and quiet pathos of this late masterpiece that make it such a compelling experience. Tickets £32 – £10

Conductor Garry Walker Violin Thomas Gould Cello Guy Johnston Scottish maestro Garry Walker conducts this meaty Germanic programme, beginning with Haydn’s vigorous Symphony No. 70. Over a hundred years later, Brahms composed his Concerto for Violin and Cello. His last major orchestral work, it was quite revolutionary in its day, the two soloists taking leading roles in an absorbing orchestral drama. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony provides a powerhouse finale. From its fateful opening to the triumphant conclusion, this is music with an irresistible sense of purpose. Tickets £32 – £10

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo Grab your diaries and start circling the dates when you can again be amused and amazed as the all-male divas of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (or ‘The Trocks’ to their friends) return to Nottingham following their hugely successful 2011 visit. Winners of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards and the TMA Theatre Award, The Trocks’ combination of apure comedy, extraordinary technical prowess and genuine love of ballet has made them a global phenomenon since they formed in New York in 1974. ‘(The Trocks) strike just the right balance of slapstick comedy and ingenious dance routines, keeping the audience on their toes. Big tunes and bright colours dominate this concert, beginning with the fiery fandangos of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol. Ruth Palmer, famed for her intensely expressive performances, is the soloist. Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony ensures a gripping conclusion, veering from blistering ferocity to quiet resignation before whipping up a storm in the finale with a breathless Russian dance.
