To
Moms Come in all Furry Forms!
St. Lucie County knows all about matchmaking when it comes to finding homes and families for pets that have been given to their shelter by way of lost and found or surrender. To find every animal a loving home, pet adoptions are a big focus for this volunteer heavy organization though fostering is quickly becoming a nice option for many who fear a full-time commitment. “It is always funny to hear about “fostering failures,” it is easy to fall in love with a pet no matter how convinced one is to not want to. We have had foster families call within just hours to say they are going to keep the pet instead,” recalls Shannon Glendinning.
With that thought in mind, this non-profit organization, dedicated to providing compassionate care and safe shelter for homeless animals is turning to the public for help during their annual Kitten Shower. This fun, virtual event allows the community to give gifts that will help ensure that the kittens that come into the care of the Humane Society will have everything they need to grow. Presently, the HSSLC is accepting donations of kitten food, litter, toys, bedding, used towels and sheets and other supplies. Of course, monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and will go towards the medical expenses and other necessities of the kittens which are then given to loving foster homes to keep them together. In addition to the supplies, each kitten also receives vaccinations, a microchip, and spay or neuter surgery to help fight our pet homelessness population.
So, what is Kitten Season? Kitten season refers to the time of year when there is an inundation in the number of kittens born and surrendered to animal shelters and rescue groups. This usually occurs in the spring months and creates a struggle to keep up with demand as space and resources are often quite limited.
What is special is to see how the love of a mother shines through regardless of birthing the kittens. Many times, fresh kittens are abandoned by the mom or caregivers and when they are brought to the shelter, they are paired with nursing moms already onsite. For weeks, they provide extra milk, socialization, and love that the kitten needs before its at the right age to be adopted; talk about compassion!
To help alleviate this problem, it’s important for pet owners to spay and neuter their cats to prevent unplanned litters. No matter the amount, supporting our local animal shelter through donations of supplies and funds can help ensure that the resources are available to care for these incredibly cute kittens which hovers around 300 each kitten season.
What is even more special than seeing the love a cat mother for its young, is a pet parent gleam about their furriest family member; especially the day they take that new animal home. After all, saving one pet will not change the world, but for that one pet, the world will change forever.
If you are interested in adopting a kitten during kitten season or any other pet listed as available on their website, the shelter is open TuesdaySaturday from 11:00am-5:00pm at 8890 NW Glades Cut Off Road, Port St. Lucie. Best part, May 1st-15th, there is no adoption fee for adult cats or dogs and only $50 for a kitten. Of course, the Humane Society of St. Lucie County has other ways to give and donate including their thrift store. Located near Dalton and PSL Blvd, just west of the Turnpike, this colorful building is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-4pm and can accept a variety of donations available to the public for purchase at incredibly affordable prices ranging from: clothing & accessories (including designer brands),games, houseware, glassware, Home décor, electronics, furniture, books & media, pet supplies, jewelry, holiday and seasonal décor & more located at 2632 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd, PSL FL 34953.
Whether you are looking to add a full-time pet to your family or simply hoping to spend a few hours each week with some animals to let them know you care, the Humane Society of St. Lucie county has something to offer you. Keeping in mind during the 2023 kitty shower, there are few things in life as genuine as the love a pet to its parent.

It Is a Family Affair at Fairwater Title
Although Fairwater
Title has been assisting in title and real estate law since November of 2015, this thriving family run company has years of experience going back to the late 90’s. “My parents met in the late ’90s, Allen Falk, my stepfather was a private personal injury attorney and Pamela Falk my mother, a business owner, in 1997 they decided to offer a private real estate law practice,” recalls Megan Norvell, owner of Fairwater. From 2008-2015, she worked as a title and shortsale processor for her parents and obtained her title agent license while also attending university in Boca Raton commuting daily for the position. It seems like real estate law and title runs in the blood for this family, as sister, Leaha Norvell also went on to practice real estate law in Boca Raton.
Tapping into her role models of the Florida real estate industry, November 2015 is when selected partners officially opened Fairwater Title Company LLC in Port St. Lucie, Florida. One processor and Megan solely ran the company for about 3 years until her mother came to manage the Port St. Lucie Office. Now, there are multiple offices for realtors to choose from in St Lucie County and Brevard Counties settling transactions all over the state of Florida using technology that allows Fairwater to accommodate clients around the world as it pertains to Florida real estate. “Even though we as a family have become business owners individually or partnered, we have a shared vision and strong work ethic. We speak to each other every day and rely on each other, and there is a high level of trust and loyalty.”
Outside of work, this mother and daughter team enjoy conceptualizing new businesses and discussing financial-related topics. Yet, there is also a shared love of music that takes up some of their evenings as well as multiple community events and travel that helps to keep these ladies busy. Although it is the advice of one’s mom and the ability to process what it means that
has Megan feeling so blessed. “Read, save your cash, and pay off your credit cards! The market crash was an experience that was frightening, and they kept up full operation in Lake Worth during the real estate downturn while many title companies and real estate law firms permanently closed their locations. We watched them track, plan, save, and invest in that real estate market. Other than their expert advice, the housing bubble and crash gave me the best training to problem solve in the market today.”
The truth of success in business is trust. “It is important to stay relevant in present market trends and technology, but it is more important to give our clients tools and strategies that work.” Fortunately, with the family’s long history in the region, they have a lifetime customer base that stems from getting genuine feedback with each transaction and implementing changes immediately if need be. That transparency lets their clients know they are listening to them. Fairwater Title Company works diligently to stay relevant in this present market’s trends and technology. Yet, the team believes strongly that the multi-generational and culturally diverse staff gives a better experience to their customers and coworkers alike.
“Our company may be offering the same products and tools as our competitor in our local market but the experience of being our friend in business trickles down to the broker/realtor’s buyers and sellers. Recommendations from friends and family go above all other forms of advertising and maintaining the diversity of thought, values, and personalities is what really matters.”

Benefits of Doggie Daycare
While many look forward to this season as it means colorful blooms and the reduction of clutter, some aspects of this season present dangers to our pets. Here are seven safety tips to help keep your pets safe this spring.
CHOCOLATE, CANDY AND OTHER EASTER BASKET ITEMS
Chocolate still ranks as the number one pet poison according to vets across the USA. This time of year, Regardless, it could soon be inside youg’s stomach. Xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used as a sweetener in many common human food products such as candy and chewing gum, is another item to keep out of your dog’s reach. Even if the Easter baskets in your home are not filled with chocolaty and sweet goodness, other hazardous items like fake grass, candy wrappers and plastic eggs are notorious for causing gastrointestinal obstructions in pets. Cats seem to enjoy chewing on the shimmering, wiggling temptation of fake grass, As a good feline parent make sure your cats pass on this grass. Unpeeled hard-boiled eggs are also favorites for dogs to eat and can cause GI complications or obstructions.
SPRING CLEANING
Spring-cleaning products labeled “natural” doesn’t mean your pets are free from harm. Make sure that your spring-cleaning products are
by Robin Hall - Out2News.compet-friendly, and when cleaning, keep pets secure and away until all cleaning substances are dry and out of paws’ reach.
SPRING PLANTS AND FLOWERS
Easter Lily and other springtime blooms are common findings this time of year. This plant and related plants in the lily family are very toxic to cats if ingested. The first signs of a problem are vomiting and lethargy, and if untreated, may progress to kidney failure and death. Da odils, another popular component of spring floral arrangements, are also toxic to cats.
EXERCISE-RELATED INJURIES
If your dog has been less active during the winter, work your way into an exercise plan for you and your dog gradually. This will help rebuild muscle tone and cardiovascular health before they engage in outdoor activities.
SPRINGTIME ALLERGIES
Just like you, pets can have allergies to plants and pollens of springtime. Spring and autumn are the peak seasons when most pet parents notice an increase in their pet’s chewing and scratching. Don’t be alarmed if your pet develops a new itch, talk to your veterinary.
Taking precautions can insure a healthy, enjoyable spring for you and your fur kid. Have a safe Spring and remember, be kind to all of our pets and their friends!
It is said that there is a special heaven for our precious pets, and to get there, they will cross the rainbow bridge. We are humbled to ensure their Safe Passage.
Everglades via the Collier Seminole State Park with the Wilds
we used the Wilds new griddle grill to cook up thinly sliced steak, pepper and onions seasoned with a generous amount of garlic salt (He thought it said powder) for sandwiches as we sat around the glow of our tiki torches. Due to dry conditions, no open fires were allowed. That night we swapped stories, enjoyed the fresh air and thousands of stars, and cheered to a good weekend ahead.
When venturing to the Everglades, bringing friends with the last name, Wild, is a must! Located three and half hours from the Treasure Coast, Collier-Seminole State Park proved to be a nice backdrop to our threenight adventure. With an onsite boat ramp (likely designed for kayaks and john boats) the area for overflow parking also included a new, all metal dock, sprawling playground and many picnic areas.
Upon our arrival, the Wilds and us made quick work of setting up camp and exploring the massive property complete with a Seminole Indian Village scene, bust of Mr. Baron Collier, Blockhouse and commercial dredger machine which was massive in size and instrumental in forging much of south Florida as we know it today. Once night fell,
Day two welcomed us with sunny skies. Loading up the back of the can-am made it easy to transport our cooler with lunch and drinks along with all our gear for the day to our boat. Once our River Roamer was in the water, we were on river 57, Blackwater of South Florida. The path looked big enough to fit our sweet little 16’ pontoon, but the further south we went the tighter it became.
At about lunchtime, we made it to the open waters and stopped o on an island, full of abandoned horse-shoe crab shells to allow our dog, Seger a chance to get o the boat and swim. With twenty minutes of fetch and swimming, we set o towards Big Marco River. Once in the crystal blue of the bay, laced with tiny islands, the large homes adorned with American flags began to appear and we took advantage of the slow speed zone to enjoy some sandwiches just as we heard the prop spin out. Thankfully, my friend Vicki and I have handy husbands who knew what to do with the backup prop onboard; if only we had the socket wrench required…We putted our way to the marina we passed and once there were able to borrow a piece of wood and tool that made do for our needs.
Day three was not so sunny and the overcast kept us cool enough for sweatshirts. We tooled around the park on the can-am
and enjoyed a nice breakfast of bacon and eggs. Just outside of the park, was a bar named Gator Crossing which housed baby gators outside, and that day had a full band playing in the parking lot. We went inside for a drink and took lots of pictures with random props they had throughout. Our bartenders must have been sailors with their language, but they made good drinks and had interesting senses of humor (e.g. soup of the day: Jack with water croutons). Soon we jumped back into the can-am and headed back to the campground so Vi-cki and I could play games while the men headed to the store for ingredients for smash burgers for that night’s meal. After a while we headed back to the bar and sat outside for the music with cold beer from the outdoor bartender; talk about people watching! In the later hours came the rain; which was peaceful and added to the entire experience.
Come Monday morning, we were up early and breaking down camp. The Wilds left first, and we took our time strolling about the park with Seger before finally leaving ourselves. It was three nights of great sleep and two rivers accomplished: happy glampin’ everyone!

Mom & Daughter in e Front of e House wi River Views!
Since opening the family’s second restaurant in 2018, this hardworking mom and daughter duo have been delighting customers along Sebastian’s waterfront. Driving back and forth from Tallahassee during her final year of university, Breanna Clarke has always loved being a part of the family business; even while working towards her biology degree. Yet, it might be the mom, Brandy Buckner that beams the biggest when asked what is means to be able to work with her whole family; “it is so humbling to know I helped create this opportunity where we all have the same goal in mind and passion for its success.”
Famous for their massive bowls of fresh seafood, bathed in butter with garlic and spices, nestled next to whole baby potatoes and corn cobs; many of the diners spend over an hour cracking crab legs and enjoy taking the time to get to know this homegrown family and learn of their commitment to the community. “It is funny because many times people mistake us for each other, we are so used to it now.” Breanna recounts while looking at her mom with such love. Yet, not only does this family work hard to run their two Crab Stop locations in Sebastian and on Royal Palm Point in Vero Beach; each one also has another career ranging from healthcare to corporate marketing.
With happy hour daily from 3-6pm o ering $2 o drafts, house wines and their extensive cocktail menu; a good crowd is always on the covered deck enjoying good food and drink with saltwater waves serving as background music when a live performer is not playing. “The Caribbean Rice with the Kiss on the Lips frozen daiquiri is one of our most favorite combos,” the two ladies shared. Served inside a pineapple, the terrifically spiced rice is mixed with flavorful crab meat, shrimp, sausage, pineapple, and sauteed mixed vegetables; it makes perfect sense that an icy cocktail would pair well. Filled to the top with a swirl, Kiss on the Lips features mango rum, peach schnapps, vodka, and grenadine for a tropical drink that is enjoyable even on a rainy day while overlooking the Indian River Lagoon.
Husband and wife with son and daughter, started their entrepreneurial journey because of unfortunate circumstances in 2014, and have
channeled that loss into growth. Growing so much that in 2019 they closed their downtown Vero location and restructured giving guests a bigger and better waterfront hotspot. Then in 2022, the family completely revamped their Sebastian restaurant o ering a new menu designed by Brandy herself. “It’s so rewarding that we can separate work from our family life; it’s like I have the best of both worlds by getting to vibe with my family every day,” Buckner says, “we all love each other so much we even go on family only trips and then come back home and hit the ground running booking music and ordering food so we can make sure our customers get what they want.”
Open Monday through Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday and Saturdays 11m-10pm and Sundays 12:30-8pm, Crab Stop welcomes walk-ins, large parties and themed events with daily food specials and happy hour at both locations. So…come meet the family and order some fresh seafood, try a featured cocktail, and enjoy some chowder, make a new friend at the bar, it’s a wonderful way of celebrating the day at the Crab Stop. And if the Crabstop wasn’t enough, please make sure you check out this mom and daughter’s creative new venture, Sweet Desires Espresso Bar & Bakery, located just minutes from the Vero Beach location.
A Fun Way to Spend the Day!
A ectionately referred to as Sebastian’s best-kept secret, this 5-acre farm o ers a variety of opportunities to get up close and personal with the animals. Yet it is so much more than a place to visit when guests are in town, it is home and a labor of love to Laura LaPorte and her farm family.
Established in 1994 by Sebastian resident Laura LaPorte. This country loving lady grew up on a farm surrounded by cattle, goats, chickens and horses and her love for animals is carried out today in this meticulously maintained farm that simply asks for donations for folks coming to visit.
Serving as an inspiration for so many, LaPorte regularly hosts special events for school children, the elderly in assisted living, veterans, and those with special needs. In fact, she herself is confined to a wheelchair after a serious car crash in 1999 and the diagnosis of muscular dystrophy before su ering from a stroke in 2015, which left her without the use of her arms or legs. Yet, with the help of family, friends and community partners, this familyfriendly farm remains a beacon of light for anyone who discovers this petting farm located just minutes from US Hwy 1 and I-95.
“Though I am limited as to where I can go and what I can do by myself, I have a great support system around me and in this sanctuary, I am able to always think up ways to help others while also getting people out here to experience the many lessons often only learned from farm life,” Laura iterates.
The entire farm and property are handicap accessible and those with disabilities are embraced at LaPorte Farms in a variety of ways from special dances and events to a new art studio that helps each person see what they can do more so than what they cannot.

bravest, service dogs are welcome. Better still, a new veteran fishing pond is in the works where local vets can come, have co ee and fish in a peaceful setting full of stocked bass and tilapia. Speaking of fresh fish and food, plan to make a nice day out of your visit on the weekends as La Porte Farms provides lunch for purchase including hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage with peppers and onions, popcorn, as well as drinks/snacks.
Of course, it is not just us humans that get hungry out of the farm. With the most eclectic array of animals, there are always easy to grab critter food options available for a small fee that help make each one your new best friend. Some of the favorites include:
• “Baby Girl” the Zebra
• “Reba” the Donkey
• “Billy Bob” the goat

• “Barry” the Cockatoo
• “Moondance and Fanci” the Llamas
• “Skippy the Kangaroo” with an all-new pen
• “Joker” & “Chipperdoodles”

With this month’s focus on mothers, it is no surprise that Laura LaPorte goes above and beyond for all the magical events hosted on her property, though she has a special place in her heart for the ones that pay homage to motherhood and family. La Porte Farms is available for private parties including weddings, family reunions, birthday parties and more with built-in entertainment and fun that will satisfy guests for hours. With a focus on sharing their passion for farm life, not for profit, some other annual events La Porte hosts include:
• Summer Camps (Registration open now)/ June 5th, June 19th, July 10th, July 19th & July 31st. Bring: Lunch, snacks, drinks, swimsuit, and a towel. Cost is $195 per week/per person.

No matter the occasion, having Moondance or Fanci join the event with their best themed hat and personality will be a hit for all and really helps keep the LaPorte name in the community. Just $250 for any function throughout Indian River County; now that is thinking outside the box for sure!
