As the end of the year draws near and the holiday season creeps up, you may be in the mood for a few quick touch-ups before entertaining. But sprucing up for holiday guests doesn’t have to mean excessive packaging or waste as you look for new items. All you need is a bit of inspiration and forethought.

Here are five easy and cost-effective ways to get your home ready for the holidays while minimizing your impact on the environment:

A FRESH COAT OF PAINT.

Most people think painting should be done in the spring or summer when windows can be opened due to the toxic nature of paint products. Not true anymore. Most paints are now low-VOC or non-VOC which means little to no odour and fewer chemicals. And all brands of paint now contain a primer built in so long gone are the days of tedious priming, then painting. Simply patch the small holes with a quick-dry mud, use a light sanding block and then spot-prime with the new colour before rolling on the first coat. When your paint can is empty, simply let the paint dry and toss it and the lid into the recycling bin (it must be dry). Also, do away with disposable tray liners. Wall paint is made with latex so let the paint dry then peel it out of the tray and toss in the trash for much less waste.

MAKE AN OUTSIDE URN OR DECORATIVE CENTREPIECE.

Urns and centrepieces are still very popular, and some florists offer workshops so you can create the exact look you want while enjoying an evening out with friends. If creating one doesn’t pique your interest, you can pre-order for pick-up with the size and specifications you need. A custom urn or centrepiece also makes a unique hostess gift and using live branches and berries means disposal in the green bin or compost when the holidays are over.

REPLACE YOUR MATS. The first few steps your guests take into your home serve as an introduction to your living space. This should not only give

a warm welcome but also set a relaxed tone and be clutter-free. Keeping the entrance way neat and clean during the winter months can be challenging. Try choosing a festive mat that offers a barrier between wet footwear and your hardwood or tile floors. Since mats are replaced every year, choose from a manufacturer that uses recycled or eco-friendly materials.

CHOOSE A THEME. This year,

why not look to the environment and aim for sustainability as a theme this year. The mantra “less is more” can breathe new life into your home and create a natural, uncluttered appeal. As we all strive to reduce clutter and unnecessary packaging, a simple, elegant, and minimalist style fits the trend this year. Deep colours like burgundy, dark blue, grey, rust, brown and, the classic forest green are popular. Natural products will dominate, like raw wood, live greens, and classic metallic pieces. And don’t be afraid to reuse and repurpose old décor that may appear obsolete.

UPDATE YOUR LIGHTING. It

might be time to upgrade those builder model light fixtures to something current and eye-catching. A chandelier in the powder room is still a popular choice, as well as softer pot lights. LED string lights are trendy and add sparkle to the subtler areas – a mantle-piece, hurricane vase, or empty bottle of wine. If you haven’t updated your lighting to LED options, now is the time. LEDs are solid-state technology, which makes them more resistant to shocks than either incandescent bulbs or CFLs, and use considerably less energy to generate light.

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, your home is likely seeing more foot traffic from guests and family. From friends stopping by with gifts, to parties and that yearly visit from the in-laws, your heating and air units may be working overtime. “Attention to a few items in the home can help prepare you for visiting family and friends during the holidays,” says Mike Nicholson, owner of Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. “Now is the time to take action on winterizing certain things in and around the home. It will give you peace of mind as the weather turns colder and holiday guests visit your home.”

Nicholson offers these five tips to make sure the home is ready for colder weather and holiday visitors:

TUNE UP THE HEATING

CHECK THE PLUMBING AS WELL

Winter often brings extremely cold temperatures, so you want to be sure your heating unit is working at peak efficiency. To make sure everyone is warm during the cold weather, try changing out your filters to give your system the best chance of success. You may also need a comprehensive heating system check from a trusted HVAC company. A system tuneup and filter replacement can go a long way toward preventing problems from putting a chill on your holiday plans.

With the influx of visitors, toilets and fixtures will get a lot of use. If a lot of hot water is being used, it can also put a strain on your heating system. Now is the best time to take care of any maintenance and repairs. If drains aren’t flowing well and freely, plunge water into the drain first before you try to remove the trap in an attempt to clear it. Be mindful that some do-it-yourself, chemical drain cleaners can be harmful to your pipes. Instead, consider trying a natural remedy: pour equal parts salt, baking soda and vinegar to clean out a partial clog. If the weather gets really cold, keep the cabinet doors in front of your sink open, so that the warm air from your heating system can flow in easier, keeping your pipes warm.

CLEAN AIR DUCTS To provide fresh, allergen-free air to your holiday houseguests, you will want to perform a thorough duct cleaning. When your ducts are filthy, your filters clog up faster and force your system to work harder to distribute air. This decreased efficiency leads to higher energy bills and excessive wear and tear on your system. Removing the registers and vacuuming the outlet is a good start, but you may want to opt for a whole-house duct cleaning to really do the job. Having a HVAC technician give your ducts a thorough inspection can help guide you in the proper direction.

SEAL DRAFTY WINDOWS AND DOORS Applying caulk or weather stripping where cold air creeps in will help with energy savings. If cold air creeps in, that too will put a strain on the heating system’s ability to keep your house warm and cozy for the holidays. Also put a draft guard under doors that lead to the exterior, and make sure the doors stay closed after people go in and out!

WINTERIZE THE EXTERIOR To prevent pipes from bursting, ensure outdoor spigots are shut off as freezing weather approaches. Have some rock salt on hand to de-ice sidewalks and driveways to make sure your holiday visitors are safe. Inspect the exterior as well to make sure there are no cracks that could let air inside, forcing your heating system to work overtime.
