FROM THE PUBLISHER

OAKVILLE & BURLINGTON

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 4 Thank you for reading our June issue. We have two special features for you to enjoy this month. Our community feature focuses on Downtown Oakville. With over 40 new businesses in the last couple of years and a full schedule of events and activities planned for this summer, there are so many reasons to visit! And for the first time, we have introduced a new section highlighting some of our favourite restaurants with patios in our area. Each restaurant has a full page profile in the magazine, and over the summer, we will be launching our restaurant portal online. We invite you to use the portal to search for restaurants by type of cuisine and neighbourhood, and to read profiles, see photos and videos, and link to menus. We hope you enjoy this issue!

EDITOR’S LETTER

T

he streets are alive with the sound of music, and my summer calendar is filling up fast. Things are starting to feel back to “normal” for the first time in a while, and hope has bloomed (just like the flowers in my garden). Judging by the lineup of festivals and events this summer, it looks like we’re in for some great months ahead…and I can’t wait! Father’s Day is just around the corner, and grilling season is here. Our Home and Garden feature will inspire backyard cooking (and check out our Shop Local pages for a few gift ideas for dad). As a new mom, mommy and me drop-in programs were a lifeline – and I’m so happy to say…they’re back, baby! Our Community feature is filled with fun ideas to keep your littlies entertained all summer long. Looking to quench your thirst? Why not try some cold-pressed juice? Loaded with vitamins and nutrients (not to mention, they’re super yummy), cold-pressed juices aren’t just on-trend, they’re great for your health, too! Traveling overseas is still a bit messy right now, but plenty of Ontario destinations are rich with character and history – like Stratford! We’ve helped you get your itinerary started, so check out our Local Getaway feature. Are you hitting the road this summer? Ditch the car and try a bike. Cycling has evolved since I was on training wheels, and today, bikes can tackle all kinds of terrain. Read all about it in our Just for Fun feature. We’re thrilled to shine a light on beautiful downtown Oakville this month. With over 40 new businesses, a jam-packed summer of fun, and plenty of patios, you won’t want to miss what they have planned. Get all the details in our Special feature. Hip-hip-hooray

ummer’s here, and it’s time to fire up the grill—but don’t stop there. From smokers to pizza ovens and everything in between, there are plenty of great options for droolworthy outdoor cooking all summer long.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire Everyone who’s ever turned on the Food Network knows that smokers are popular at the moment, and just about any homeowner with a backyard has had the perennial “gas or charcoal” debate about barbeques. So, where do you begin if you’re new to outdoor cooking? We feel that the best backyard cooking method is the one you enjoy most — try a few options, figure out what you like best and get ready for some incredible dinners on the deck or patio. “This summer, we’re seeing a lot of people venture out of the traditional gas barbeque,” explains Ashley Côté of BBQs Galore.

A delightful consignment boutique that provides outstanding value and an extraordinary shopping experience.

“They want an authentic smokey flavour, so they’re looking at getting charcoal barbeques. These are available in many sizes, from tabletop to very, very large.” And if old school isn’t your thing, or a large charcoal grill feels too intimidating? Start with baby steps. “Charcoal has a bit of a learning curve, so some people have also taken an interest in Pellet Smokers. Pellet Smokers have been a trending category in the barbeque world for a few years now,” says Côté. “They’re basically a ‘set it and forget it’ solution—until you need to refill your pellets or take your food out — and many connect with apps where you can monitor your grill from your phone.” Other in-demand products include pizza ovens (BBQs Galore carries the Alfa One Wood Fired Pizza Oven, among other options) and high-end backyard smokers like the Big Green Egg.

Create an outdoor dining space Once you’ve set up your grill area or outdoor kitchen, it’s time to create a comfortable, relaxing outdoor dining space that everyone can enjoy. BBQs Galore has high-quality patio heaters, fireplaces, and more, and Oakville Home Leisure has an amazing selection of patio furniture and accessories. When setting up your dining space, consider things like multiple seating options (for example, a table and chairs plus a conversation area, Muskoka

chairs, or a hammock) and items that provide privacy and shade. You’ll also want to consider various lighting options (built-in, patio, or string lights) as well as a heat source such as a fire pit or patio heater. You may also want a small fridge or even an outdoor bar for all those fancy summer cocktails. Finally, add both functional and decorative touches like colourful textiles, outdoor glassware and serving dishes, stylish planters, and more. Make it your own — your yard is an extension of your home, after all! Cheers to summer At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you’re flipping burgers on a classic charcoal grill or experimenting with something trendy and new — the point is to make the most of every beautiful, sunny day. As Côté notes, anything goes when you cook outdoors — just have fun. “We honestly are a fan of both classic grilling and new techniques and encourage people to get experimental when it comes to the grill!” LL

Downtown Oakville this Summer!

W

by ANNELIESE LAWTON

hile I never lived in downtown Oakville, I spent the summer of my youth "living" downtown Oakville. My heart holds fond memories of summers spent between Allen Street and the Oakville Harbour. While some things have changed over the years, the charm of downtown and many of the shops and restaurants are the same as they always were…..if not better. And after two years of living through the pandemic, downtown Oakville is more vibrant and alive than ever. With the full completion of construction and the opening of over 40 new businesses, downtown Oakville (including its BIA, its merchants, and its community) welcomes us into summer 2022 with open arms. Music is back with the TD Summer Music Series, featuring eight weeks of music every Saturday afternoon, plus there is a new Patio Passport program and so much more. Come and explore the six blocks of upscale lakeside shopping, wander the tree-lined streets rich with historical homes and character, and sample the renowned restaurants – not to forget the Oakville Museum, the Oakville Galleries, the Central Library, the Oakville Harbour, and the Oakville Yacht Club. The Town of Oakville is growing, but our quaint and charming Downtown is a lakeside gem with much to be cherished. Whether you're new to the area or a lifelong resident, downtown Oakville has lots to offer. Make sure you plan for a few extra hours during your visit – because more often than not, you can't help but fall in love. t's no secret - the pandemic was hard on small business owners. Over two years, our beloved local retailers, fitness studios, restaurants, and cafes have cycled through closures for months at a time. With a pivot here and support from the community there, many survived. And, now that the construction project is finally over, Lakeshore Road looks fantastic, with wide pavements, beautiful planters, and numerous patios and outdoor dining areas. The good news is that despite the obstacles posed by the pandemic, Downtown Oakville has welcomed over 40 new businesses over the last two years. Check out this list of some of Downtown's latest restaurants, retailers, and professional service providers.

Burning Rubber Cycling Fanatics Are Hitting the Road (and Trails and Hills) by JULIAN KINGSTON

36

Look Local Volume 10 | Issue 4

"However, you decide to ride, get out there, hit the road or the dirt, and don't forget your helmet."

A

round here, cycling is nothing new. In the late 1890s, the Toronto Cycling Club paid for a cinder path from Toronto to Oakville. The "Wheelmen" held races on weekends, and the town was full of cyclists.

Today, there are as many types of bicycles as there are riders. From your basic "sit-up-and-beg" style bike (imagine Oxford professors riding to lectures) to cool California-inspired beach cruisers to ultra-light carbonfibre racing bikes with more gears than a tractor-trailer. There are "fixie" track bikes with no gears or brakes and BMX bikes to race on dirt (which can also do amazing tricks in terrain parks and on the street).

The standard road bike with drop-style handlebars and front and rear derailleurs come in many racing forms with different gearing and frame geometry. Still, light bikes go far and fast, whether a bike is for a speedy time trial, tight-cornered street race, or triathlon. Oakville's Racer Sportif has got you covered in this space with some very rarified rides. The forgiving touring-style road bike features more relaxed frame angles and a more comfortable ride. The longer frame, beefier brakes, a third small chainring (to give low gears for climbing), and cargo points on the frame and forks (to mount carrying racks) make these the bikes for cycle touring on extended trips. Mountain Equipment Co-op in Burlington is an excellent place for your touring needs, and nearby Brant Cycle has a good general selection of bikes.

38

Look Local Volume 10 | Issue 4

Prepare to be bewildered by Mountain Bikes (MTBs). Typically seen with a flat handlebar and gearing suitable for power, you can find MTBs for lighter trail use - often, these are "hardtails," - i.e., they have no rear shock absorber and a suspended front wheel. Dedicated downhill and heavy trail bikes tend to be "fully suspended" with shocks at the front and integrated into the frame of the rear wheel. A recent MTB evolution is the Fat Tire Bike. With massive tires on oversized rims and running at low pressure, these bikes can handle almost any surface, from snow to sand to mud. They're the go-to ride if you want a serious off-road expedition. Check out Gears and Cyclepath for their expertise on these bikes. In-between road and MTBs, you'll find hybrid and gravel bikes. With their flat bars and relaxed riding position, Hybrids are faster on-road than MTBs and capable of light off-road use. While gravel bikes, with their drop bars and more road bike-like angles, are lighter, faster, and can carry speed from the road to the dirt.

With Oakville and Burlington's growing cycling community, both municipalities continue to add shared and dedicated bike lanes. And if the bike choices above aren't enough, e-bikes are a great way to get to work, especially if your commute is a little long or hilly. E-bikes can help you beat high gas prices, too. You can also combine your travel modes with a bike rack for your car or a folding bike you can easily toss in your trunk. Cycling is also gaining ground in tourism, with the Heart of Ontario, Visit Oakville, and Tourism Burlington promoting tours, cycling experiences, and visits to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. Along with the Oakville BIA certifying their bike-friendly status, there has never been a better time to plan a ride here. Another great, earth-friendly, and budget-conscious way to cycle is with second-hand bike swaps and shops like Burlington's Rolling Horse Community Bike Shop. However, you decide to ride, get out there, hit the road or the dirt, and don't forget your helmet. LL

AVON RIVER LOOP

Allen's Alley Allen's Alley, originally a passage to the Livery Stables behind The Wellington Street Hotel, is now home to 13 graphic painted murals honouring talent and celebrity visitors. Stratford is well known for its art scene, and Allen's Alley is one of the most popular destinations amongst visitors and artists. Located between Wellington Street and Erie Street, each mural depicts a unique glimpse of Stratford's musical history. Avon River Loop While widely known for its art scene, Stratford has another defining feature - the picturesque Avon River. The Avon River Loop is a 2.6-kilometre pathway around the Avon River. Enjoy sights as you navigate the trail (which only takes about 35 minutes to walk from start to finish). It's the perfect place to view wildlife, enjoy the river, and even stop for a picnic in the park. Visitors love bird watching, hiking, and even cross-country skiing in the winter. The trail is open yearround and is beautiful to visit, no matter what season. Bonus points: the path is paved, making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

Stratford Gardens This garden has quite a history. The feature most visitors notice immediately is the 65 foot (20 metre) chimney, all that remains of the Dufton Woolen Mill that initially occupied the site. The mill was built in 1874 and burned in 1919, leaving only the chimney that still stands as an imposing landmark. The garden was first conceived to include only plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays. That emphasis has changed over the years. Many plants in the garden are definitely “Shakespearean” (look for fine stands of herbs such as fennel, rue, tarragon, and rosemary). Still, visitors are sometimes surprised to find decidedly non-Shakespearean plants as well. You may wish to pause to admire the gazebo and nearby formal beds of hosta, ferns, begonias, grasses, and amaranth. Whether you're looking for a weekend away with friends, a datenight with someone special, or a family getaway - Stratford has a little something for everyone. LL

eing a new mom is filled with soft baby cuddles and coos, but it can also come with loneliness. Days are spent just you and your baby, away from former coworkers and friends. Suddenly, you’re singing Cocomelon in the shower and counting the hours until nap time. Mommy and Me programs provide moms with an excellent opportunity to connect with others in the same stage of life - moms who don’t mind that you have spit up on your shirt...because they do too. Babies also benefit from socialization. We’ve rounded up some of the best Mommy and Me drop-ins in the Halton area. Tip Toe Music If you’re in the Burlington, Oakville, and Milton areas, check out Tip Toe Music for parent and child music and movement programs. Their Music Together classes are for babies (up to 7 months),

The team at Paradiso pride themselves on offering much more than a place to have an exquisite meal. With a warm and intimate atmosphere, an open-concept kitchen, and cuisine that draws inspiration from the Mediterranean, it is a great place for dinner for two or a larger gathering. The downtown Oakville patio faces west and is a perfect spot for al fresco dining in the summer months. The downtown Burlington patio is nestled in Village square and feels like you’re in Europe. Both locations are an ideal place to have a meal before attending a show at either Performing Arts Centre.

Environment

It’s a calling card of summer: that aromatic and ever-so-tempting scent of a neighbour barbecuing something delicious on a warm evening. A distinct aroma tempts the taste buds — the fragrant goodness that only an outdoor grill can provide. To those who are lifelong, dedicated meat eaters, a tofu steak or veggie burger will likely not offer the same primeval reaction as the sausages on your neighbour’s grill, but it doesn’t mean plant-based products aren’t a tempting and tasty choice. These options have come a long way. Today, there are some 18,000 vegan food and drink products available on the market. In 2021, plant-based dairy and meat sales were over $650 million in Canada and are projected to increase five-fold by 2030. I'm not serving up these numbers to try and entice you to become a vegetarian. For the record, I chose to stop eating red meat over a decade ago, but I still eat poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products. The reality is the world is not giving up meat; in fact, we are on track to set a new record for consumption.

78

Look Local Volume 10 | Issue 4

A small adaptation in our diet, however, would help our environment immensely. The global meat industry generates about one fifth of manufactured greenhouse gas emissions, which, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, is more than the entire transportation sector. Eating meat, in itself, is not the problem. The issues are with the resources required to sustain the supply and the by-products produced as a result. Cattle and other farm animals produce huge amounts of methane. This gas is particularly dangerous to our climate because it traps more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2). Cutting methane is the “biggest opportunity to slow warming between now and 2040,” according to Durwood Zaelke, a lead reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Zaelke urged world leaders to recognize the problem at the global climate summit COP26, which took place in Glasgow late last year. An easy first step is adopting a "Meatless Monday" to your weekly diet routine. This global movement encourages people to reduce meat in their diet for their health and the health of the planet. To date more than 40 countries participate, including Canada. Plant-based meals are more environmentally efficient because the food is directly consumed, rather than the growing, feeding, transporting, processing, etc., that is needed to produce beef. By replacing at least one meat-based meal each week with a plant-based option, The Earth Day organization says that would be the equal to taking your car off the road for over 500 km each year. Here’s the meat of the story: going vegan or even vegetarian does not have to be all or nothing, but we need to start somewhere. This summer, try reducing your consumption of meat one day per week while supporting local at the same time. Discover the many amazing local farmers’ markets in our region and create tasty veggie-based dishes grown close to home. Squeeze the Day The Summer of Juice by JENNY RATCLIFFE-WRIGHT

e all know that fruit and vegetables are good for you, and while you may favour a hamburger over some cucumber and hummus for lunch, getting your greens is key to staying healthy. Dietary guidelines suggest two cups of fruit and two and a half cups of vegetables per day may reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer (along with helping weight management). It's no wonder that "juice" is booming in popularity. Juicing is one of the easiest ways to get your daily serving of fruit and veg. And while you may already be on the smoothie wagon, juicing certainly has its time and place. Pure juice offers concentrated vitamins and nutrients, which are much easier to absorb. Blending, on the other hand, is great for meeting your daily intake of fibre (which helps with digestion, controlling blood sugar, and lowering the risk of heart disease). But how does juicing work? Cold-pressed juice uses a hydraulic press to extract the maximum amount of liquid from fresh fruits and vegetables. Since the cold-pressed juices aren't pasteurized, you don't risk losing any vitamins, nutrients, minerals, or antioxidants.

Spoon the vanilla pudding into a baked pie or tart shell, spreading out evenly. Starting from the centre, place strawberries standing up in rows, or slice them and place them in a pretty pattern. Once filled with strawberries, slightly heated apricot or strawberry jam can be brush across them as a glaze.
