There's nothing like coming home to a place that, well, feels like home—and that all starts from the outside. When you pull into your driveway, don’t you want your home to wrap you in a warm 'welcome home' hug? And, unlike your bedroom or kitchen, the outside of your home is visible to everyone. Changing up your windows and adding a new front door and more current garage door can make a huge impact on the aethestic look and feel (and even value) of your home. But where do you start? Based on advice from Mississauga’s experts, it turns out that there are a wide range of resources and services available to help you upgrade your home’s exterior to match your perfect style—and become the envy of the neighbourhood! Here are some tips for an outside facelift for your home.

Garage Doors Just like interior design trends, outdoor living trends are everchanging. This year, garage door trends are on a pendulum, favouring either very simplistic, clean contemporary designs with minimal lines, or the exact opposite: old-fashioned, rustic-looking carriage door styles. There’s one caveat, though, says Phillip Bennett, General Manager of B&M Garage Door Inc. “The more modern styles just won’t work on some homes,” he cautions. “That’s why it’s so important to collaborate with an expert who can help guide you through your selection and create a mock-up of your vision. You’ll be surprised, too, at the return on your investment. “Recently, the ROI on garage doors has surpassed kitchens and bathrooms,” Bennett says.

But what if your windows could use an update? “The first concern homeowners should consider when replacing their windows is whether or not they really need to have them replaced or only repaired,” says Peter Petrovski of Mississauga’s Custom Window Designs. “If you do indeed need new windows, then it’s vital to find a reputable company with many years of experience that uses quality materials and provides exceptional installation.”

An in-person visit to a showroom is recommended, too. “Visiting the showroom allows you to physically see and compare the different styles and mechanisms available to best suit their needs and preferences,” Petrovski advises. “You’ll also see truer colours with the naked eye rather than digitized photos.” As for your front door, trends are showing that the days of a double front entrance are over for now. A double front door on a house can make a home's entrance seem dated. Instead, homeowners are opting for a new, extra-wide door frame opening, transforming a double front door into one door by installing a single front door with sidelights. Not only will a new door update the look of your entranceway but including sidelights in the doorframe will allow natural light to pour into your entryway. And when it comes to colour, “it really depends on the home,” Bennett says.

Although mortgage rates remain low, inventory has fallen drastically over the past year, resulting in bidding wars and skyrocketing prices. The Canadian Real Estate Association reports that the urgency to purchase a home continues to fade— with many first-time homebuyers losing hope. But there are options we can discuss. Q. What can we look forward to in 2022? A. Limited supply and high prices are expected to slow sales in 2022, while interest rates are predicted to inch upward by early to mid 2022 at the latest. Q. Why should I choose you instead of going to a bank? A. A bank only offers its own products, which are limited. I research multiple lenders to find the best product and rate for my clients. Banks also calculate penalties differently from mortgage-only lenders, and that could make a difference of thousands of dollars, should you need to break your contract. However, there are times when a bank may be the only option for specific mortgages, and we have relationships with them that allow us to offer you lower rates than if you were to walk in and request a mortgage directly. Q. How will you figure out what type of loan would work best for me? A. There are loans for residential purchases, pre-construction, rentals, and commercial and they can be open/closed/fixed/ variable/reverse. I look at several factors

including the loan-to-value ratio, your debt ratio and credit score, amount of down payment, work history and income, and the type of property/value/condition/ location. We then talk about what product will keep you in your comfort zone. Q. Would you offer a rate match? A. My goal is to get you the best deal. If you already have a rate, please let me know. I would want to match it, or, ideally, do even better. It’s important to understand the terms in a contract, because sometimes the lowest rate available could end up costing you much more in the end if you have to break the term. I work with your interest in mind. Q. Are you available 24/7? A. Lymphatic vessels parallel blood vessels throughout your body and large groups of lymph nodes are found in the neck, armpits, and groin. As your massage therapist works on flushing blood through muscle and tissue, they are also draining the lymphatic system, where the lymph nodes filter out dead cells, waste products, and possible pathogens. Sluggish lymph flow contributes to fluid retention, and draining the lymphatic system may reduce edema in certain parts of the body.

A full-body massage is good for your heart as well. The vasodilation produced by massage increases your venous return which, in turn, increases blood flow and delivery of oxygen to all your organs. Your entire cardiovascular system relaxes and circulation throughout your body improves. Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system’s “rest and digest” mode helps regulate blood pressure and heart rate.

Digestive Wellbeing

Stress takes a toll on the digestive system, and a full-body massage can have a very healthy effect on how your body process food and nutrients. The parasympathetic nervous system regulates your digestion producing needed chemicals (like saliva, gastric juice, and insulin) and stimulates peristalsis, which moves food through your intestines. Classic Swedish massage includes an optional abdominal massage that acts directly on your large intestine to regulate the final stages of digestion. When food moves smoothly through the digestive system your stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, and intestines work together for maximum nutrient absorption, which supports your overall well-being.

Improved Breathing

Your massage therapist may ask you to take a deep breath at the start of the massage. Unrestricted breathing is one of the fastest roads to stress reduction, and your first breath on the massage table may become a sigh of relief. In addition to the diaphragm, there are muscles in your ribs, chest and neck that assist breathing. I LOVE THAT SOUND. That first crunch of leaves underfoot sends a sharp and clear-cut signal to the senses that the autumn season has begun. This is a season that I, personally, look forward to more than any other. The brilliant sight of nature’s kaleidoscope, the scent of the musky harvest, the sound of those dry fallen leaves… add in the cooler weather and shorter days and the signs are all there that nature is getting set for a much-needed pause.

And while we humans get to experience the beauty of autumn, nature’s creatures are immersed in a rush of activity to prepare for all that is to come, and their movements are performed with instinctive precision. Folklore would have us believe that some animals’ innate abilities are a crystal ball of signals for us, too. Take the Woolly Bear caterpillar, for instance. The most well-known fall caterpillar in our region, this fuzzy little one, unlike most, won’t transform into a moth. Instead, he or she will spend the winter as a caterpillar after using the autumn season searching for shelter, a few final meals and then hunkering down to hibernate for several cold months. These remarkable creatures come fully equipped with a unique seasonal superpower. Woolly Bears nearly freeze solid during hibernation. Their bodies produce a chemical called a cryoprotectant that acts like anti-freeze to protect their organs and body tissues from being damaged from the cold. Some will endure the entire winter completely frozen, only to come awake during the spring, spin a fuzzy cocoon and transform into the Isabelle Tiger Moth. Amazing!

This natural defence is why the woolly worm has become the centre of folklore—as a weather prognosticator. Covered in thick, fluffy-looking hair (which is actually quite stiff), the Woolly Bear sports bands of black and reddish-brown. An age-old mythology suggests that the size of the brown band on these critters may serve to predict the severity of the coming winter: the wider the brown band, the milder winter will be, and the more black there is, the more severe the winter. Others have suggested that the 13 segments of the Bear’s body correspond to the 13 weeks of winter. I think stories like these are a great way to engage children about the wonders of nature. Science, of course, tells us that the caterpillar's colour is more closely related to the growing season—the better the season is, the more it eats and the bigger it grows, and that these caterpillars will shed their molt at least six times before reaching adult size.

In fact, the Woolly Bears that we see in the autumn are the second generation. The first emerge in April, feed, spin a cocoon of silk and then after pupating for two weeks, the Isabelle Tiger Moth emerges. Fertilized females then lay eggs on trees and grasses, and new caterpillars hatch to begin the cycle again. The Bears are gentle creatures, their minute bristles do not sting, and their bodies are not poisonous. While they do eat the leaves of some tree species including maples and birches, there is never a large enough population to have a significant impact on foliage; they simply add another dimension to the autumn landscape and yet another sensory offering from a season that is an overwhelming offering of awesome. Oh, and one more thing! Should you spot a Woolly Bear in the winter, please resist touching them… the heat from your hand could actually cause a thaw and awaken them, to their ultimate peril. t’s officially autumn, and for some reason, our tastebuds just seem to start craving the earthy, sweet flavour of pumpkin. Sure, you can buy all the pumpkin-spice flavoured drinks, cookies, muffins, cakes, even cereal that you want, but what if you want to do a bit of your own cooking? What can you do with the humble, unassuming can of pumpkin puree that has been in your pantry since last fall? It’s tempting to follow the predictable path and use it to bake up a luscious pumpkin pie like the one on our cover, but there is so much more you can do with a can full of this humble gourd!

A sauce for all reasons Looking for a different fall dinner idea? Try using pumpkin puree to make a savoury sauce that comes together easily in a food processor or blender. Blend pumpkin puree with cream, nutmeg, salt and pepper and use this as a base to mix into hot pasta along with mascarpone cheese, and then toss in a handful of spinach and walnuts. You could also pour the sauce over quinoa and roasted veggies, or even use it as a pizza sauce alongside garnishes like goat cheese, sage and peppers.

Sub for oil Feel like baking on a rainy fall afternoon? Pumpkin puree can be used as a substitute for oil or applesauce in many cake and muffin recipes, adding a wonderful richness and “fall flavour” to baked goods. As an added bonus, by substituting pumpkin puree for oil, you up the vitamin A and fibre content—it’s a win-win! You can try substituting the puree for up to 3/4 of the amount of oil called for in a recipe (add it in with the wet ingredients) and note that your baked goods may cook slightly faster when you sub in the puree. Try this in pound cake, pumpkin spice muffins, or a partyworthy bundt cake with cream cheese glaze.

Pickling Filling or Puree? Pumpkin pie filling and pumpkin puree may seem like the same thing, but the can of filling will have sugar and other spices added. For most of the ideas below, you would be better off using a can of sugar-free puree— this will allow you to customize your recipe and take it in a more savoury direction, or sweeten it slightly if you prefer.

Trick with a treat Sneaking a healthy veggie into the kid’s breakfast? Yes, our kids are smart—but it’s worth trying to slide pumpkin into the breakfast rotation during the fall season. Pumpkin puree easily substitutes for some of the oil in pancake and waffle recipes, and you can really get creative with the flavours by adding cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, even pumpkin pie spice to the batter. Or, whip up a batch of never-fail cinnamon rolls, making them even more autumnal by spreading on a layer of pumpkin puree before rolling up the dough. Who knows? The fam might even prefer the pumpkin version!

No boring brown bag Looking to spice up another humdrum work Tupperware lunch? At this time of year, we love taking soup or chili for lunch in an insulated thermos—both are filling, warming and easy to prepare the night before. For a hearty soup, simmer pumpkin puree with chicken broth, cream and nutmeg, add shredded chicken, and top with croutons just before eating. If

chili is on the menu, brown onion, pepper and ground beef, stir in pumpkin and tomato purees, and add your choice of canned beans. Season with your favourite chili spices and simmer the whole pot for an hour. Voila—office lunch is served!

Pot lucky! Invited to a Thanksgiving potluck dinner? If your host asks you to bring an appetizer, try a fall-flavoured hummus. Simply mix a tub of store-bought hummus with around ½ cup of pumpkin puree, and top with shelled pumpkin seeds. Or why not offer to bring mashed sweet potatoes with a secret ingredient? Cook 2 pounds of quartered, peeled sweet potatoes in boiling water for 15 minutes. Drain and mash with 1 cup of pumpkin puree, 1/2 stick of butter, 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and salt to taste. INGREDIENTS FOR CAKES • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup almond flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp ginger • 3/4 tsp nutmeg • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp cloves • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar • 1 cup pumpkin purée • 2 large whole eggs • 3/4 cup buttermilk • Zest of 1/2 orange *optional EXPERT TIP: all ingredients need to be at room temperature… and when using a scale to measure ingredients, try to do liquids by weight in order to maintaine consistency.

METHOD 1 Preheat oven to 350’F. Prepare 2 x 6” cake pans or 6 x individual Bundt cake pans.

2 Spray pans with release spray and dust with flour; if using 6” pans, you can line with parchment.

3 In a bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, salt, cloves, then whisk in almond flour and salt.

4 In a large bowl with a hand mixer or in the bowl of a

stand mixer with the paddle attachment, beat your butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add one egg at a time, incorporating well after each addition. Add pumpkin purée in 2 parts, combining well. After your second addition it may look like it is trying to split— this is okay but stop mixing.

5 In three additions, add your flour mixture to the

creamed butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk in 2 additions. Scrape down the bowl halfway to finish mixing.

EXPERT TIP: It is always safer to undermix in your mixer and finish by hand to prevent over mixing.

6 Bake as 6” cakes for about 25-30 minutes. Bake as individual Bundt cakes for 15-20 minutes.

EXPERT TIP: baking times are an estimate and may change according to your oven. Always check if the cakes are done by inserting a toothpick; it should come out with a few crumbs.

BOURBON CREAM CHEESE FROSTING • 1 brick cream cheese, room temperature • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature • 3 1/2 cups icing sugar, sifted • 2 tbsp bourbon (substitute milk for an alcohol-free option) • 1 tsp vanilla • 1/8 tsp salt

METHOD 1 Cream the butter and cream cheese

until smooth in a large bowl with hand beaters or in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Add remaining ingredients and beat until fairly stiff.

BOURBON CREAM CHEESE GLAZE FOR BUNDT CAKES • 6 oz regular cream cheese, room temperature • 1 cup icing sugar, sifted • 2 tbsp milk • 1 tbsp bourbon (substitute milk for an alcohol-free option) • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • Salt, 1 pinch

METHOD 1 Mix cream cheese and icing sugar

together with a spatula. Once combined, add vanilla, salt, bourbon and mix again. Slowly add milk a bit at a time until you reach a thick consistency i.e., when you should lift your spatula out of the bowl, the glaze should be thicker than molasses.

2 Garnish with toasted pecans chopped

To walk into their expertly curated bricks and mortar shop lnner Beach Co., located in the heart of Port Credit, or visit their online site, innerbeachco.com, is to instantly feel that chill beach vibe we all yearn for, especially as days get shorter and temperatures dip. Offering a wide range of high-quality, super-beachy products including home goods, wellness products, apparel and gifts, the Inner Beach Co. lifestyle brand launched online at the beginning of June, while the flagship store opened its doors to beachcombers June 15. This retail venture marks a dramatic career shift for Olsen. Founder of the uber-successful Balzac’s Coffee Roasters, which now boasts 16 retail locations in the GTA, Diana has had her fair share of entrepreneurial

So why did she decide to leave the life she’d built and explore this road less travelled? “For us, Inner Beach Co. represents a lifestyle shift to a different state of mind,” Diana explains. “It’s more about slowing down and unplugging while simultaneously reducing our footprint. We want to inspire others to share that consciousness.” And why Port Credit? Inspired by the beach and surf culture she experienced firsthand growing up in Vancouver and California, and now living right on the waterfront, Diana knew this laidback vibe would resonate in our own fun, funky community by the lake. “Our family is healthiest and happiest when we’re near water,” she explains. “We paddleboard, kayak, surf, collect sea glass—and our home reflects that beach aesthetic.” The company is also moving away from selling items that contain single-use plastic, and their clothing lines are more investment pieces than fast fashion. In keeping with their ethos to take care of our waters, Inner Beach Co. has partnered with Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, a charity devoted to protecting the Great Lakes. “This great initiative tests the water daily from all of the beaches on the lake,” Diana explains. “Inner Beach sponsors water testing of four beaches in our area: Marie Curtis, Jack Darling, Richard’s Memorial and Lakefront Promenade.” Recently, Inner Beach and Lake Ontario Waterkeeper held their first ever Karma’s A Beach Shoreline Cleanup, and they promise there will be more… stay tuned! “We love to share the beauty of the beach lifestyle,” Diana says, “and that means we need to have more respect for our waterfront. The beach is therapy for the soul.” Inner Beach Co. is open year-round.
