A SIX-STEP, BACK TO BASICS FINANCIAL PLAN

It’s a tough time to know what the right financial move is at the moment. Interest rates are increasing, while stocks are in bearish territory. It’s easy to forget that there are smart things that you can do right now regardless of the uncertainty.

1 Get rid of your high-interest debt.

Do you have any debt with an interest rate above 7% or more? (If you have credit-card debt, you likely do!) If so, pay it down first. Why? Well, odds are that any returns you make from investing will be less than the interest you pay on your debts, which sort of defeats the whole purpose.

2 Build an emergency fund.

OK, so you’ve paid off your high-interest debt. Time to invest, right? Almost. First, you should stash away three to six months of living expenses in a savings account or somewhere else low risk. That way, if you get laid off or your car has issues, you’ll have enough cash to ride things out without taking on any more high-interest debt. Which would put you back at step one.

Maximize your employer match.

At last! It’s time to invest! So, where to begin? If your employer matches your contributions to a Group Retirement Savings Plan (GRSP), start there. You can contribute as much as 18% of your income, and employers typically match 3–6%. For example: if you made $60K and your company matches 5% of your salary - your company will give you an extra $3,000 in income to put toward retirement. Not taking advantage of this is like refusing 5% of your salary.

Max out your tax-advantaged accounts.

The Canadian government, as an incentive to encourage us to save for retirement, offers two special investment accounts. An RRSP reduces your taxable income so that you pay less tax now, while also sheltering any income earned in the plan. A TFSA (Tax Free Savings Account) allows you to contribute an annual amount and any income earned in the plan is not subject to tax. If you invest outside these accounts, you’re voluntarily paying more taxes.

5 Pay down

low-interest debts.

Once your TFSA and RRSP are maxed out, consider paying down your lower-interest debts, like a mortgage or student loans, since these debts still have interest that can negate your investment gains. It’s hard to be super prescriptive about whether this is the right move for you, because it depends on your debt situation, but definitely look at your interest rates and your investment expectations.

6 Invest in yourself or in your children

If you’ve reached step six, congratulations! Now you can think about what to do with the rest of your money. You can put some into a personal investment account, say. Or save for a new house. Or sock away money for your children’s college or university education.

Following these simple steps will help you save for a comfortable retirement irrespective of the short term economic volatility.

As lifestyles shifted due to the coronavirus pandemic, our homes had to adapt to new activities and routines. Dining rooms and closets became home offices, kids’ bedrooms served as home-school spaces, and guest rooms were outfitted with workout equipment.

Flex spaces are intended to help your home better accommodate your day-to-day life. Guest bedrooms, for example, can often be reimagined for more frequent and flexible use. People are realizing that an entire room in their home dedicated to an occasional house guest may not be the best use of space – a commodity that has become decidedly more precious over the past year. To maximize function within your home’s existing floor plan, follow these tips for creating a flex space that works with your lifestyle. 18

THINK OUTSIDE A ROOM’S ASSIGNED FUNCTION

Consider your home’s least-used spaces, such as a formal dining room, breakfast nook, sitting room or extra closet, and how they could be put to better use. Your home’s builder might have intended the room for a specific purpose, but feel free to readjust if that doesn’t align with your everyday priorities. Nothing is off-limits for reimagining how a space can be used.

A flex space should be designed around the activities that will take place there, such as working, exercising, doing homework and more. People are surprised by how cohesive they can make a space if they start from ‘What should the space facilitate?’ versus ‘What is supposed to be in this room?’.

CONSIDER YOUR LONG-TERM NEEDS

As you configure your flex space, consider how your needs might change as time goes on, and plan for flexibility. If you have young children at home, think about how it will be utilized as they grow up. If you will host a lot of family or guests in the future, think about how you’ll accommodate them. Opt for lightweight, easy-to-move furniture to help ensure your setup can be rearranged as needed. When it comes to exercise equipment, consider alternatives to large and bulky equipment, such as tension bands. These can be kept in a decorative bin or basket and still provide a full-body workout.

PLAN FOR STORAGE

Incorporate plenty of storage into your flex room to manage clutter and maximize space. Add storage that can be closed off – cabinets with doors to hide messes and contain all the items necessary for whatever activities will be taking place in the room. Choose furniture or containers that can stylishly and efficiently accommodate your storage needs, whether that’s for workout gear, office supplies, toys or other items.

COMPARTMENTALIZE THE FLEX SPACE

If your flex space will serve multiple functions, section off areas of the room for each need. For example, designate one corner for a home office and use the other side of the room as a workout space. Room dividers or shelving units can serve as physical barriers that separate the space and offer added privacy. For a visual cue, lay down rugs or paint an accent wall to specify different sections.

USE FLEXIBLE FURNITURE

If you want to have a multi-purpose space, you need to have multipurpose furniture. Outfit your room with pieces that can transform to suit different needs or activities. Look for nesting furniture that can be stacked or separated, tables with extendable leaves or fold-down mechanisms, and armoires that can open up to reveal a workspace. Just be sure to measure the room carefully before purchasing furniture.
