Market Update BANK REGULATORS HINT AT CHANGE TO MORTGAGE “STRESS TEST” The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) recently announced that it may make adjustments to its qualifying mortgage stress rate before the end of the year. Current regulations require homebuyers to demonstrate they can manage mortgage payments at an interest rate of 5.25% or their current mortgage contract rate plus 2% (whichever is higher). These stipulations seem to be pushing many would-be homebuyers out of the market, hence OFSI’s announcement.
