On the negative side, the Board sees some risk that the Bank of Canada might go overboard on interest rate increases that are designed to help curb inflation. The rate sensitive housing market, a vital component of our economy, would be particularly exposed if this were to occur. The Board feels, however, that the positive factors outweigh the risks. Here’s hoping they are bang on with their forecast!

The Conference Board of Canada is forecasting a soft landing for Canada’s economy in the months ahead despite current challenges. The Board sees optimism in strong consumer spending figures, particularly in the travel and services sectors, and strong commodity prices that are lighting a fire under our exports.

It’s essential to consider your overall financial health when making such a big decision. Although being mortgage-free would be a fabulous feeling, you don’t want to do it to the detriment of your cash flow.

If you have various other debts (credit cards, auto loans, etc.) it’s a good idea to pay those off before the mortgage. Why? Well, credit cards usually have astronomical interest rates so that outstanding balance will only grow if you choose to put all your money towards your mortgage.

Before you go paying the mortgage off, consider funding your retirement plan. If you don’t have one already, it may be a good idea to set one up as they are tax advantageous. Think about what kind of after-tax return you can expect from your investment portfolio, and compare it to the interest rate on your mortgage.

Once you get a good handle on your retirement plan, paying off the mortgage might be next on your list. You may conclude that adding to your investments and savings is a smarter decision than paying off your mortgage early. A goodsized nest egg and a home that’s mortgage-free sounds like a great way to start off retirement.
