MARKET UPDATE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT FOCUSES ON HOUSING SUPPLY Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced two important measures aimed at combating rising housing costs. The federal government has removed the GST from the construction of new rental apartments to encourage new development and add to rental supply. Many projects were recently put on hold due to high interest rates and construction costs, but this new measure will make projects more economically viable. Dream Unlimited Corp., a Toronto-based developer, has already committed to building 5,000 rental units as a direct result of the announcement. The Liberal government is also requiring municipalities to repeal or amend exclusionary zoning policies in order to access the government’s $4 billion Housing Accelerator Fund. London, ON, the first city to sign on, did a $74 million deal to build 2,000 homes.
