The events of the last few years have brought into focus many important realities of life — who we are as individuals and the legacies we plan to leave behind.

Being with our families and having the ability to connect with them and share our significant milestones has taken on a new meaning. As many Ontarians confront their own mortality, the value in appropriate estate planning and the creation of a Will is apparent. If an individual dies without a valid Will, their estate will pass in accordance with the laws of intestacy, which are set out in the Succession Law Reform Act. This article will not explore that process suffice it to say that allowing the legislature and courts to determine your wishes rather than clearly setting them out is not ideal. When planning your Will, there are several key questions to consider. Who do you want carrying out your wishes and ensuring that your goals are met? This individual is called the executor of your Will and it is crucial to select the right person for you, as well as an alternate.

This person would have to agree to assume legal guardianship, standing in for you in your role as a parent. Again, this is also an appointment who must have an alternate. Other questions may arise with the distribution of your assets and making sure there is money left over to take care of your families needs. All these questions, and more, should be discussed and assessed with your lawyer when planning your Will. Sutherland Marshall provides a free, initial 30-minute consultation to begin this process. Sutherland Marshall Professional Corporation is an award-winning law firm that offers a personalized approach to each client. Founder John David Sutherland and his team provide specialized services in Wills and Estates, Real Estate Law, Family Law and Corporate Law. Other questions may arise with the distribution of your assets and making sure there is money left over to take care of your family’s needs.

Warmth has settled in, so I hope you’re already experiencing every ounce of joy. Take in the sounds and smells. Look up at the blue sky.

Outdoor gatherings are what summer is all about. Barbecue aromas are already wafting through the streets and parks. Festivals are in full force and listed within these pages. I particularly love summer nights — basking in the soft glow of firelight or patio lanterns, warm lilac-scented breezes, and the sweet lullaby of crickets. Our Home and Garden feature takes outdoor ambiance to the next level with the latest in home patio trends.

Early summer is a feast for the senses. Of all of nature’s gifts, none quite match the glories of a sun-ripened strawberry in peak season. Please indulge in our mouth-watering feature on where and how to enjoy a bumper crop of sweet, juicy strawberries right here at home.

June is a time to celebrate dads. This edition of Look Local highlights some unique, experiential Father’s Day gifts. If a new tie doesn’t bring joy to the dad in your life, nothing says “I love you” like a chartered yacht or a flight aboard a vintage World War II fighter plane.

Speaking of love, we’re honouring another cherished family member: the dog. Our furriest family members may not express their devotion in eloquent English, but through their actions and goofy grins they shower us with love, laughs, and unbridled joy. To ensure the health and happiness of Fido (or Bentley or Little Miss Petunia), our dog feature has got you covered.

Do you romanticize the sound of a screeching rooster? If you crave a rural day trip, we’ve highlighted two must-visit local farms – one where you can sip homegrown cider in an upscale meadow lounge, and another where you can snuggle, stroll, or practice yoga with adorable rescued animals.

By now, tents and trailers have filled Ontario’s provincial parks. If you’re among the lucky ones who scored a campsite, our camping feature outlines how to plan for maximum enjoyment and minimum rummaging through the car to find the can opener. Allow plenty of hammock time. Pack your copy of Look Local and a great novel! Our summer reading guide lists new releases and summer classics guaranteed to transport you.

Patio Paradise

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE WITH THIS SUMMER’S TRENDS
ELEVATE YOUR
18 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4 Home & Garden

The season for outdoor leisure has finally arrived, so dust off your cushions. It’s prime patio time! Since the start of the pandemic, homeowners have invested more in their outdoor living spaces to design inviting retreats that cater to their needs. A patio can become the ideal oasis for relaxing with a good book, socializing with friends and family, or simply connecting with nature while breathing in the fresh summer air.

“People are creating tranquility in their own yard,” says Jay Real, Owner of Oakville Home Leisure. “They’re trying to recreate a vacation they’ve been on and experiences they’ve seen and felt elsewhere as an extension of their home.”

“Cabanas, kitchens, dining al fresco, technology with stereo systems and TVs are all things people are investing in,” explains Rose Luxton, Owner of Lakeside Livin’. “Outdoor spaces have evolved a lot.”

Regardless of the size of your space, you can easily integrate elements of breezy resort living into a condo balcony or a complete backyard makeover with the following trends.

Colour

Design experts agree this season is all about cool blue hues. Common interpretations of this colour provide all the feelings you want to integrate into a dreamy staycation including calmness, serenity, and refreshment.

looklocal.ca
19

“You can incorporate a colour theme throughout your entire space,” says Luxton. “You can infuse it into striped fabrics, outdoor rugs, and pillows. Not only are we seeing a lot of blue this summer but orange, lime green, and other pops of colour too.”

Furniture

Opt for pieces that evoke the comfort and luxury experienced on a beach vacation while creating a personalized look. There’s no need for the various elements to match.

20 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

“We’re seeing a movement away from sectionals back to sofas, loveseats, club chairs, and club swivels,” explains Real. “The trend in the industry still includes resin wicker, but it’s swaying more to aluminum and other materials as additional creative design elements are available. Mixing elements by pairing rustic teak tables with wicker dining is very popular.”

Decor

Accessories make memories! Take the opportunity to select pieces representative of your lifestyle from kid-friendly corners to sophisticated spaces for empty nesters.

“Pillows with sayings are always embraced,” says Luxton. “Outdoor metal artwork is a great way to decorate brick walls and fences. People are also veering toward natural tones and woods because you can always mix and match any trend with sustainable outdoor wood foundations.”

Shade

Sun protection is as important on your deck as it is on a tropical vacation. Retractable shades and umbrellas featuring breathable fabrics and UVstable finishes will help keep you cool and safe from harmful rays.

“Shade is at the top end of everyone’s scale of what they’re looking for,” says Real. “In this climate, people are also opting for cantilevers with rolling bases so they can move the umbrella around their backyard and adjust to the changing seasons.”

Must haves

Ambiance is the hottest trend you can add to your patio space this summer. Luxton’s pick is, “Hanging solar lanterns that have the look of real flames to create that lustre and [cozy] feeling when you are sitting outside.”

Real chooses fire features. “Everybody loves to gather around a fire as it can be used for heat or ambiance,” he says. “Dekko ultra-modern fire pits are absolutely spectacular.”

A GUIDE TO KEEPING YOUR POOCH HEALTHY, FIT, AND HAPPY

Family
26 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

Hey, dog people! Wait… reading that back, it sounds a little insulting. I can assure you, it’s not. Dog people are a brilliant breed. Dog people greet you AND your pup as you pass in the park. Dog people will share their last poop bag without hesitation. Dog people have at least four quirky nicknames for their pooch.

Dog people love their furry friends fiercely and will stop at nothing to ensure their dogs are healthy and happy.

If you are a dog person, you are committed to making sure your beloved pet lives life to the fullest.

Here’s how:

EXERCISE

Just like us, dogs need their daily dose of exercise to stay in tip-top shape. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the block, a game of fetch, or a hike through the woods, exercise is essential for keeping those tails wagging. Aim for at least 30 minutes to an hour of activity each day, but remember to tailor the intensity to your pup’s age, breed, and health condition.

SOCIALIZATION

Dogs are social creatures who thrive on companionship and interaction. So, why not organize a puppy playdate or visit a local dog park for some tail-wagging fun? Socialization not only keeps your dog mentally stimulated but also helps in developing good behaviour and manners. Plus, watching your furry friend romp around with pals is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

28
Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

“Socializing your dog is essential for their overall wellbeing and development,” explains Samantha Cipriano from The Petaway Pet Hotel and Spa. “It boosts their confidence, adaptability, and general behaviour.” Doggy daycare and puppy playdates offer great opportunities to introduce your pet to various environments, people, and other dogs in a controlled setting. This kind of exposure is crucial for teaching them appropriate social interactions, which can prevent behavioural issues like aggression or anxiety in the future.

“Starting doggy daycare at a young age is particularly beneficial, as it helps puppies develop independence and reduces separation anxiety,” Cipriano says. “Daycare is advantageous for dogs of all ages, offering continuous opportunities for socialization and enrichment throughout their lives. Whether they’re playing with friends at daycare or meeting new companions at a playdate, socialization is a key component in raising a welladjusted and joyful dog.”

NUTRITION

Opt for high-quality dog food that meets your dog’s nutritional needs. Avoid the temptation to overindulge in treats (no matter how pleading those puppy eyes may be!) and always provide plenty of fresh drinking water.

“Raw food diets are becoming super popular!” says Helen Everett from Call of the Wild Raw & Natural Pet Food Store in Aldershot. “Many people are choosing to feed their dogs and cats a raw diet because it’s allnatural versus the lower quality ingredients you may find in dry kibble. Other reasons you might consider switching to raw, partially raw, dehydrated raw, or freezedried raw include: healthy skin & coat, weight management, reduction or full elimination of allergies, natural teeth cleaner, less smelly stools, support with joint and bone health, and an improved and noticeably happier mood.”

SAFETY

From toxic plants to tempting table scraps, our homes are filled with potential hazards for our four-legged friends. Ensure your

pup’s safety by pet-proofing your living space, keeping harmful substances out of reach, and providing a secure environment both indoors and outdoors. And don’t forget the importance of regular vet check-ups to keep health issues at bay. Also, be sure to keep your dog leashed and close when out walking, especially on the trails around Halton — coyotes also enjoy a raw food diet, if you catch my meaning.

Many modern families find that they need help with caring for their pets – we all know that getting a new puppy may be the stuff dreams are made of, but it is a lot of work. You may be interested to learn more about Pawsome Concierge, a new service that has recently come to our area. They specialize in providing top-notch pet sitting, home boarding, walking, and personalized services for pets with special needs. All of their caregivers are thoroughly vetted and certified to ensure the highest standards of care.

LOVE

Never underestimate the power of love and affection in keeping your dog healthy, fit, and happy. Shower your canine companion with plenty of cuddles, belly rubs, and praise to let them know just how much they mean to you.

Keeping your dog happy is a labour of love that rewards you with endless tail wags, wet kisses, and unconditional love and companionship.

Want to share the love? The Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) relies entirely on donations to feed, shelter, and provide medical care for the animals. Their Barkin’ Bin Thrift Store is loaded with great deals for every bargain hound. If you’re spring cleaning, consider donating new and gently used items to the Thrift Store. All proceeds go directly to helping the animals.

Farm Joy

Discover the restorative effects of two very special homesteads by Michelle

Country day trips nourish the soul. Natural landscapes lift anyone’s spirits, and the therapeutic benefits of petting a bunny or frolicking in a meadow are hardly surprising. For city slickers craving a rustic getaway or a taste of nature’s bounty, the following two rural destinations are unique, local, and not to be missed.

34

TRIPLE C FARM, ANCASTER

Triple C started as a small hobby farm and horse boarding facility. Tricia Simons set up the farm to make her eldest son Geoffrey’s farming dreams come true. They started by rescuing four goats, a sheep, and two horses.

The farm eventually opened its doors to the public for goat yoga. If you’ve never heard of this, instead of the usual ultra-serious kind of zen experience, this yoga involves adorable goats checking you out, jumping on you, or chewing on your hair – making it impossible to have a bad day.

As word spread about these animal rescuers, their hobby farm evolved into a fully functional animal sanctuary. “Admittedly it is a bit addictive outbidding a meat buyer, walking out with an animal that was bound to be killed, and bringing it home and seeing it blossom and love and just be happy,” says owner Tricia Simons.

35
looklocal.ca

By appointment only, visitors can enjoy the property at their leisure. The interactive petting farm has more than 160 animals (goats, sheep, alpacas, mini horses, pigs). Visitors can take an alpaca, donkey, mini horse or goat for a walk; snuggle with goats, bunnies or mini pigs; groom a horse or donkey; partake in goat yoga; or even bring their favourite DVD and watch a movie with their new furry friends. Beyond the petting area there are horse and donkey paddocks, and freeroaming chickens and ducks.

The farm is a source of income for Simons and her family but, more importantly, it gives brothers Geoffrey, Michael and Richard, all of whom have autism, a wonderful life. “The farm’s most unique feature is that over 80% of the work is done by individuals with special needs,” Simons says. “It gives them a sense of purpose and a ‘job’, and a place where they can be themselves — not to mention reducing the amount of screen time in their lives.”

WEST AVENUE CIDER HOUSE, FREELTON

The 75-acre property owned by Amy Robson and Chris Haworth is a popular destination for its breathtaking scenery and award-winning artisanal cider. The idea for West Avenue Cider House started to form when the couple lived in England.

“There were so many amazing unique ciders and cider houses, but when we came back to Canada in 2005 there was nothing like that here,” Robson says. It took Amy and Chris – then a TV producer and a chef, respectively –a few years to get a business plan together and develop recipes.

What started as just a taproom has evolved into a thriving family-friendly agro-tourism experience. On a sunny day it’s abuzz with first dates, friends and families. “In England it was perfectly acceptable for you to bring your children to the pub,” Robson says. “We wanted a place where kids can roam and dogs can hang out.”

The property includes two kilometres of hiking trails where visitors can see the honey bees and apple trees, a lookout, a pond with a beaver dam, and even the resident chickens and roosters.

The Cider House itself is cozy and rustic but, in nice weather, patrons prefer to sit outside in the beautiful Meadow Lounge to socialize and enjoy cider, wood-oven pizza and other delights in the soft summer breeze. The scenery is so tranquil and pretty that West Avenue has become a popular spot for weddings, landscape painting, spa retreats, and more.

West Avenue Cider House’s summer hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6:00 p.m.

When did you start your business?

Tell us the story of how you got started. The Yogashala opened in October 2013. It all started while I was sitting on a beach in Nicaragua daydreaming about opening up a yoga studio. 1.5 years later, with my first business partner, we opened the doors. Within a few years, I moved on to find a new business partner, Cheri DeMenna, who is still by my side to this day!

What gave you the idea and the motivation to launch?

I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur but for a long time did not know what type of business I would open. Yoga came into my life in my 20’s and it is also when I did my yoga teacher training. Excitement and the love of yoga gave me the motivation to bring this dream to fruition.

What were the biggest challenges early on?

Dealing with uncertainty was definitely hard, finding the right people to work alongside proved to be a challenge, and stepping up to be a leader and an owner was something that I struggled with. Learning how to lead with integrity and mutual respect was something that took time to master.

I understand that yoga and all that it encompasses can really change your life. Knowing the power of this practice is what continues to give me the passion and motivation to continue to work and build a space for all ages and stages of life. Showing up every day is the easy part, I love being here, I love all the staff, the teachers, my amazing business partner Cheri and the whole community. It truly is my safe space too! MEET THE

When did you start your business?

Tell us the story of how you got started. Our journey of The Petaway traces back to 2021. As cousins, our shared love for animals had been a lifelong bond (with a combined total of nine pets between us), and our passion for animal care ran deep. We often found ourselves grappling with the anxiety of leaving our beloved dogs in unfamiliar settings, wishing for a place where we could entrust their care without hesitation.

What gave you the idea and the motivation to launch?

We wanted to establish a sanctuary where we could trust in the quality of care provided and where other pet parents could share in that peace of mind. We feel strongly that proper animal care should encompass not only basic needs but also elements of joy, comfort, and indulgence.

What were the biggest challenges early on?

In the early stages, one of our biggest challenges was the struggle to be taken seriously. At just 23 years old, we encountered skepticism and doubt from various quarters despite our passion, expertise, and dedication to our business. Additionally, we faced significant challenges in a market where pet parents already had established places they trusted for their pet care services. Earning their trust and encouraging them to switch to The Petaway took considerable time and effort.

Tell us more about the business today. Describe products + services and what makes them and the customer experience unique and special.

Our business is centered on delivering a comprehensive and personalized experience for our furry friends. A standout feature is our carefully managed daycare with lower capacity limits, separate rooms based on size and temperament, a diverse range of mentally stimulating activities and games, and plenty of outdoor time.

In addition, our grooming service sets a new standard in pet care, with our one-onone, kennel-free approach. We specialize in breed-specific grooms and use luxury products to provide the best possible care.

Our reception area offers a boutique-style retail experience, curated with unique, highquality products not commonly found in traditional pet stores.

What is it that makes you so passionate about what you do? Tell us what motivates you to come into work every day!

Our passion for what we do is fueled by an immense love for animals and a relentless dedication to enhancing their lives. What’s truly remarkable is that it never feels like work. MEET

When did you start your business?

Tell us the story of how you got started?

The first Linea Intima store was opened 27 years ago by the founder Liliana Mann who was my employer and friend. I have worked for Linea Intima as the Finance Director for 26 years and when the time came for Liliana to step back from the business to enjoy life a little more it became evident that, with the support of my husband, we should take the plunge and become entrepreneurs.

What inspired you to make the investment and take over the business?

I knew the back end so it gave me the confidence to take over. My husband and I are hard workers and committed to making the Oakville location the best it can be. It’s an area that has so much potential. We both feel like there are no limits to what we can accomplish here in Oakville. Rest assured the Linea Intima that everyone has come to love has not changed too much and Liliana is still very much involved mentoring me about the world of buying for our three stores (two in Toronto).

What were the biggest challenges early on?

I was never really involved with the buying so one of the first items on the list was a buying trip to New York. Wow! So much fun but very overwhelming! I learned so

much that weekend. Since then, I have been trying to learn as much as I can about seasonal fashion, fit, products and customer service.

Tell us more about your business today. Describe the products or services you provide and what makes them and the customer experience unique and special. Linea Intima has been in Oakville since 2011. Our motto is to improve women’s lives, one bra at a time. We have a full curated selection of lingerie brands in ranges of sizes to meet everyone’s needs from bras to panties, sleepwear, loungewear, shapewear, bathing suits and accessories. We have excellent sales associates that have gone through both Bra fitting and Mastectomy fitting training and are able to fit women and assist them in building their lingerie wardrobe.

What is it that makes you so passionate about what you do? Tell us what motivates you to come into work every day!

I love to meet new people and hear about their unique life stories and how their experience in our store has made them feel. We are, at the end of the day, a small business operated by women supporting women!

Local booksellers share their top summer reading picks

Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4 58 Just for Fun

For two idyllic months, Canadians are about to trade in the parka for flip flops, poolside barbecues, and a slower pace conducive to leisurely pursuits. It’s time to take the beach blanket out of storage, hang the hammock and dust off the chaise lounge. As relaxing takes precedence and multitasking takes a holiday, prepare to indulge in some great summer reading.

From steamy romances to spine chilling mysteries, scintillating biographies to old school classics, there’s no shortage of books guaranteed to transport you. We compiled a shortlist by asking local bookstores for their top recommendations.

Pickwick Books

WATERDOWN

The Ministry of Time

The genre blending time travel, romance and spy thriller is an ingeniously constructed exploration of the nature of truth and power and the potential for love to change it all. “I powered through this one in a weekend,” says Marnie Mycroft, owner of Pickwick Books.

The Hunter

This spellbinding novel set in the Irish countryside by a celebrated crime novelist is a nuanced, atmospheric tale that explores what we’ll do for our loved ones, what we’ll do for revenge, and what we sacrifice when the two collide. “The Hunter is a quietly compulsive, character-driven novel fueled by intrigue, mystery and murder by one of my favourite Irish authors,” Mycroft says.

James

A brilliant retelling of the story of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Huck’s enslaved companion, Jim. This classic retelling is subversive, smart, daring and supremely executed.

Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide

This diabolical thriller comes with a killer concept: the McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts is an academy dedicated to the art of murder, where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim. The novel offers a clever premise and fresh writing, according to A Different Drummer Books.

The Moving Toyshop

Published in 1946, this mystery is a classic and the author’s most famous novel featuring eccentric amateur detective Gervase Fen. There are few mysteries wittier than Edmund Crispin’s classic, according to the bookstore.

Super-Infinite

This is an electrifying biography of John Donne, poet of love, sex and death. Sometime religious outsider and social disaster, sometime celebrity preacher and establishment darling, John Donne was incapable of being just one thing.

None of this is True

Coming out July 2024, this novel is a psychological thriller about a woman who finds herself the subject of her own popular true crime podcast. Any book by Lisa Jewell is a page turner if you like books with a twist, according to By The Lake Books.

The Maid

This Canadian author introduces us to Molly Gray, a hotel maid whose orderly life is upended when she discovers the infamous and wealthy Charles Black dead in his hotel bed. Suspected of murder, she’s soon caught in a web of deception with no idea how to untangle herself. Prose’s second novel, The Mystery Guest, also features Molly Gray caught up in another mystery.

CAMPING happy

Tips for an easy-breezy escape in the open air

Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4
Just for Fun

Connecting with nature, unplugging, and roasting s’mores sounds blissful. But let’s be real, roughing it in the great outdoors can be intimidating. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a newbie outdoorsperson, a little preparation can elevate your camping trip from basic survival to a relaxing retreat.

PICK THE PERFECT SPOT

The perfect campsite is key to a great trip, especially with kids and pets in tow. Look for amenities such as safe swimming areas and easy to access hiking trails, and consider proximity to bathrooms and a camp store for essentials. Opt for shaded campsites, especially for pets. If backpacking, choose a flat location that is clear of rocks to set up your tent and consider proximity to water sources and trees for shelter from the wind.

65 looklocal.ca

FIND THE RIGHT TENT

When buying a tent, “size, weight, and durability are the most important factors,” says Marina Orde, General Manager at Adventure Attic in Dundas. Lightweight tents are ideal for backpackers, while durability is a main concern for car campers and families. Melo Ding, Owner of Ox-Gen Outdoors in Oakville, says tent size is rated by the number of people that can sleep in a tent, but warns these ratings can be tight. Allow extra space for gear.

MAKE YOUR BED

PACK KITCHEN ESSENTIALS

Roughing it somehow turns eggs and a humble cup of coffee into a zen ritual. For kitchen convenience don’t forget the portable gas stove, cookware, mugs, collapsible sink, and

Pack a sleeping bag, a pillow, and an air mattress or sleeping pad for a cozy night’s rest. Sleeping bags trap your body heat inside to keep you warm while an air mattress or sleeping pad adds a layer of cushioning and insulation from the ground. Sleeping pads roll up to fit inside your backpack, while air mattresses require an air pump for inflation but feel more like a regular bed. “You can also consider a camping cot if you don’t want to sleep on the ground directly,” suggests Ding.

66 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

biodegradable camp soap. “Camp soap is usually very concentrated, so a little goes a long way,” says Orde.

PREP MEALS IN ADVANCE

Pre-made food, frozen in a leakproof container, is handy and also functions as ice in the cooler. Orde’s go-to camping meal is chili. “Chili can be prepared as a vegetarian or vegan option, and can offer great nutritional content: protein, vegetables, carbs and fibre,” she says, adding that chili can double as pasta sauce.

KEEP FOOD COLD AND SAFE

To keep food fresh, Orde recommends YETI Tundra coolers.

“These will keep ice frozen for days, and keep your food properly chilled for days, too,” says Orde. For optimal coolness, pre-chill your cooler and then place an ice block at the bottom, packing food in layers.

“Place items that need to stay coldest, such as raw meat and dairy, closest to the ice,” says Ding. Fill in empty spaces with ice. “A tightly packed cooler

retains cold air more effectively and slows down the melting of ice,” says Ding. Keep your cooler in a shaded area, replenishing ice as needed. Pack beverages in a separate cooler to avoid letting the heat in every time you grab a drink.

Freeze dried foods and nonperishables are best for backcountry camping since keeping food cold isn’t an option.

STAY ORGANIZED

Labeled plastic storage bins help keep everything neat and

68 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

protected. Ding recommends hanging gear on hooks to keep it off the ground and easy to find. Backcountry campers have the added challenge of packing only essentials to keep their load manageable. Keep frequently used items accessible in exterior pockets to avoid digging through your pack, and use waterproof bags for clothing, electronics, and other items that need to stay dry.

Implementing these tips will help to make your outdoor getaway comfy and fun!

PATIO GUIDE 2024 LOCAL

70 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4
Food & Drink

We Canadians accept, perhaps begrudgingly, that it is “pretty chilly” around here for 6 months of the year. No leaves on the trees, no flowers in the gardens, and usually snow to shovel.

But as spring arrives and the gardens and trees burst into bloom, the anticipation and excitement of being able to spend more time outdoors grows. And one of the things we all look forward to in the warmer months is visiting a local patio. Whether it’s for a cappuccino as the first warmth of the morning sun filters through, or an icy gelato in the heat of the midday, or a delicious meal and a glass of wine under the stars at night, there is something extra special about being outdoors.

If you are excited about patio season, there is an almost endless assortment of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops getting ready to welcome you in our community. Each year, it seems more and more dining establishments are adding outdoor dining options, and our local municipalities continue to assist by creating safe and inviting on-street patio spaces.

In the following pages, you will find information about some of our favourite local restaurants and cafes with patios. At Look Local, we have been busy enriching and expanding our selection of restaurants on our online portal. To see more options, please visit looklocal.ca/find-a-restaurant. You can search by area and by type of cuisine, and view reviews and multiple photos of the dining establishments of your choice. We invite you to use this as your definitive guide to exploring all of the great dining options in our community.

See you on the patio! Bon appetit!

BLUSHING beauties

It’s prime strawberry season at a farm near you

84 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4 Food + Drink

One morning over breakfast, my toddler asked for “star-berries.” She described them as, “Da red ones with da dots.” Strawberries! She wanted strawberries on her pancakes.

I think she was onto something. Strawberries are indeed celebrity berries in my opinion. Ever heard of strawberry glam jam? That’s what I call it, anyway… the shimmery preserve made with edible glitter has undeniable star quality. Nevertheless, strawberries on their own are the superstar of fruit farms at this time of year.

Eaten fresh, baked in a pie, tossed in a salad, or enjoyed in any number of mouthwatering ways, strawberries are a celebrated sign of summer.

Speaking of summer, we visited Springridge Farm every summer and fall when my kids were little. Now that they’re grown and no longer interested in wagon rides or the Fun Farmyard, I visit Springridge on my own to stroll around the Barn Market. I always stop in at the bakery to pick up a pie and some preserves that

I end up sharing with my big kids. What they don’t know is I usually eat a strawberry tart or two on the way home. You snooze, you lose, kids.

“Strawberry season is an exciting time here at Springridge Farm,” says Farmer John Hughes, coowner. “It’s hard to believe we’ve been growing and harvesting everybody’s favourite berries for almost 40 years. We pick them at their peak, so they’re always fresh and ready for you to take home and enjoy.”

If you feel like channeling your inner farmer by picking your own

berries, head to Andrews Farm Market and Winery. Established in 1980, this 165-acre community farm in Halton Hills has grown to include a winery (Strawberry Wine? Yes please!), a playground, and an animal corral. Pick your own berries or buy a basket from their “proud to be local” farm store.

Matt Setzkorn, Operations Manager at Andrews Farm says, “If you’re picking your own, choose strawberries that are bright red all over with green caps. Avoid berries that are mostly white or green, as they’re not fully ripe. Lift the leaves gently to check for any hidden

86 Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

berries underneath. Sometimes the ripest ones are tucked away out of sight. To harvest the berries, grasp the stem just above the berry between your thumb and forefinger, then give it a gentle twist. This should detach the berry from the plant without damaging it.”

Wondering what to do with your berry bounty once you’ve picked them or picked out the perfect basket at the farm store? Indulge in their sweet, perfect ripeness and gorge. You can also dip strawberries in chocolate, add them to yogurt, preserve them in a jam, or use them in your baking.

YOU’LL NEED:

• 1 pound cake (store-bought works)

OLD-FASHIONED ENGLISH T RIFLE

• 1 jar strawberry jam

• 1 ½ cups sliced strawberries

• 1 ½ cups plain greek yogurt (0%)

• 1 tsp pure vanilla extract or paste

• 4 (or more) fresh whole strawberries for garnish

Slice the pound cake crosswise into ½ inch slices, set aside.

In a small bowl, stir vanilla into greek yogurt, set aside. Start with a layer of pound cake in the bottom of each of four large red wine glasses. You will likely need to cut the slices of pound cake into smaller shapes to create this layer – don’t worry, the finished product will look great. Next, add a thin layer (approx 1/8 inch) of strawberry jam. Then add a layer of strawberries, and then a layer of vanilla-flavoured yogurt (between ¼ and ½ inch thick). Repeat layers until glasses are full, aiming to finish with the yogurt layer. Garnish with a whole fresh strawberry and refrigerate until ready to serve!

Look Local Volume 12 | Issue 4

I always joke that I don’t bake, I “bakery” (pie crust scares me). Thankfully, Springridge Bakery offers a variety of pies, tarts, and other tasty treats.

In the words of chef Jesse Lauzon, who heads the Springridge Bakery, “Strawberry shortcake is a summer classic. But another simple dessert that highlights the freshness of inseason strawberries is an English Trifle.”

Lauzon shares this lighter version of trifle, made with vanilla greek

yogurt. It packs all kinds of flavour and couldn’t be simpler to put together. “Make individual servings in large red-wine glasses, or make one large layered trifle in your favourite large glass bowl or trifle dish,” he says.

Whether you go berry picking, pick up a basket from a local farm, or enjoy berries plucked from your own garden, strawberries will undoubtedly be the star of your brunch, picnic, or dessert this season. Enjoy! And try not to get strawberry juice on your shirt.
