To learn more about this common phrase and what you should look for when assessing a home, we spoke with award-winning Barrie Realtor® John Weber.

I

“Traditionally when Realtors® use the phrase 'house has good bones, in many cases, they are referring to an older home that might need to be renovated,” says Weber. When considering a renovation project, you need to ensure integrity and strength to the structure of the building.

f you’ve ever been house-hunting or considered a home renovation, you’ve probably heard the term ‘good bones’ used to describe certain properties. The implication is usually clear—the house is in decent shape and would be considered a good investment rather than a money pit—but when it comes down to it, do you know exactly what having ‘good bones’ means?

THE SIZE—AND LAYOUT—IS RIGHT

Look Local Volume 5 | Issue 514

When assessing a house with a buyer, Weber says a Realtor® will look for a few hints of whether the home is structurally sound. “In an older home, if there is an unfinished basement, we look to see if the floor joists are in good shape,” he says. Are the floorboards solid plywood or a lower-quality chipboard? Are there any cracks in the concrete walls? Can you smell mold or any other odors? Even if the basement is mostly finished, Weber says the utility room, laundry, or furnace room will usually give some hints to the integrity of the home.

THE BASEMENT TELLS A TALE

If a home lacks cosmetic updates but is spacious and has a great layout, you could say it has good bones. Essentially, you’re describing a home that can be modernized or changed to reflect your aesthetic without knocking down load-bearing walls or making other major structural changes. Changing up cabinetry and flooring to reflect your taste is a whole different beast than knocking down walls and re-doing plumbing and electrical.

A house with good bones will have updated plumbing and electrical systems—no knob and tube or aluminum wiring, for example. An older home may have screw-in fuses that can be converted to a modern breaker panel by a certified electrician. If you aren’t ready for a renovation that gets behind the walls, make sure to get the home’s wiring, plumbing, heating and cooling systems assessed before committing to a purchase or renovation. If all the “heavy lifting” has been done, you can spend your money on cosmetic things – the things you can see and enjoy.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE WALLS?

looklocalmagazine.com15

Even with a home inspection, no one can see through the walls. However, home inspectors who use thermal imaging equipment can examine for cold spots, lack of insulation, and moisture. “Without punching holes in the walls, this is a great way to determine a home’s history,” says Weber.

Look Local Volume 5 | Issue 5 barrie@looklocalmagazine.com 16

The definition of “manageable” is different for every homeowner, but your renovation experience, skills, budget, and willingness to tackle a big project are all important factors that should be considered before buying a new home or renovating your current residence. Buyers love the idea of putting their own touch on things, but inexperienced renovators can quickly find themselves in over their heads. If you run out of money repairing things behind the walls, you don’t even get to the cosmetic stuff that you want to see in your home. Weber recommends buyers conduct a home inspection and bring in a builder/contractor to discuss the feasibility of a renovation prior to purchasing the home. “These two professionals will also help determine the strength and integrity of the 'bones' of the home,” he says. So before grabbing your sledgehammer, do your due diligence and decide if you’re mentally and financially prepared.

t wasn’t all that long ago that craft beer took Ontario by storm. In 2015, after much grumbling by craft brewers and beer drinkers alike, the provincial government introduced new measures aimed at making it easier for small local brewers to deliver their products to Ontario’s growing population of beer geeks. Since then, Ontario has seen a boom in both the quality and quality of craft beer. It seems like nearly every region has a renowned brewery, and post-secondary schools have been expanding access to brewing programs. However, it might be time for craft beer to take a back seat – said no one ever – but, hard cider is trending in popularity.

With fall just around the corner and local farmers' fields lined with blossoming apple trees, there is no better time to round-up local cideries.

HERITAGE ESTATE WINERY & CIDER

Barrie’s original craft cidery is located on the beautiful grounds of Heritage Estate, with over 40 acres of vineyard. Handcrafted with 100% Ontario-grown apples, new owners Isaac Drookman and Walter Vaz are part of a new wave of cider markers, serving this refreshing, lower-calories, gluten-free, preservativefree alternative to beer. Their Dragon’s Gold Cider starts with notes of caramel apple, blackcurrant, and raisin with a green apple finish. If you like something sweeter, their original Eden’s Apple infused with fresh strawberry juice is a perfect choice.

Today, you’ll find 7,500 acres of apple orchards running along the southern-most part of the golden shores of Georgian Bay. The Thornbury Village Cider and Brew House was originally an apple storage building. They brew their cider in a state-of-the-art production facility using only the finest apples from Thornbury. With a robust selection, you’ll find a taste for every palate, including cranberry, elderflower, rose apple cider, sparkling, craft cherry, and blood orange.

It wasn’t until 2015 that Duntroon Cyder House was officially born. After traveling throughout the UK for a number of years, owners Tim & Kimberly longed for the premium taste of traditional English cyder they had come to know and love. Their Cyder Master is always dreaming up new, unique, and delicious small batches, including their fully self-sustainable and carbon neutral Net Zero cyder. LL

FALLING I N L O V E W ITH BALA

The CranberryBalaFestival

Look Local Volume 5 | Issue 528 LocalFashionGetaway

very year, cottagers anxiously await the official opening of summer: Victoria Day Weekend. And as soon as the calendar hits May 24th, cars packed with coolers, pillows, and fishing rods make their way up Highway 400 toward the recreational promise of Muskoka.

E

Muskoka is a collection of wonderful towns that together make up the most popular cottage country area in Ontario. With over 1,600 lakes, thousands of acres of green forest, and lots of great restaurants and places to stay, it’s no wonder everyone wants to be there.

Along with the festival, Bala and surrounding towns, Gravenhurst and Minett, have stunning sights, incredible restaurants, and cozy accommodations.

But after every last smore, campfire song, and cannonball off the dock has been had, as lake temps drop and leaves start to change, cottagers prepare for the unofficial closing: The Bala Cranberry Festival.

Every year since 1984, on the weekend after Thanksgiving, Bala hosts their annual (and world-famous) Cranberry Festival. Every year except for 2020, of course. However, in previous years, when the festival rolled around, the town would explode with music, events, and food – and the theme through it all: cranberries.

looklocalmagazine.com 29

Besides being Canada’s smallest town, Bala is home to the largest cranberry marsh in Ontario (the Johnston Cranberry Marsh) and known as the Cranberry Capital of Ontario. And what should one do when famous for cranberries? Throw an epic festival around it.

The 2022 event will feel similar to the traditional large-scale event pre-pandemic. Visitors will discover handmade Muskoka and Canadian artisans’ products, pick-up fresh cranberries, enjoy epicurean delights, tantalize their taste buds with fresh cranberries dipped in candy, and be entertained with many different zones and attractions. See the power of Lake Muskoka flowing into the Moon River high up on a Ferris Wheel and enjoy merchants on the Bala strip.

The Town of Bala – often referred to as the Heart of Muskoka – is a picturesque small town where Lake Muskoka empties into Moon River. The Town itself is Canada’s smallest incorporated town with a population of approximately 370 year-round residents. But throughout the summer and into the festival weekend, this small town sees anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 people.

DID S O M E O NE SAY Cheese

o one really knows who made cheese for the first time, but according to one legend – it happened by accident. As the story goes, an Arabian merchant put milk into a pouch (made from the stomach of a sheep) and set out for his daily activities. Rennet – the enzyme that converts milk to cheese – is naturally found in the belly of some animals. We’re not sure if the tale is true, but we do know cheese has been around since roughly 8,000 BC (before emperors, royalty, and even writing!)

Cheese can come from all types of milk. You may be familiar with goat, cow, sheep, and water buffalo cheese, but there is also vegan cheese made from cashews. Once the type of milk is defined, the type of cheese can also have many variants.

Dairy-based cheese is made from just four essential ingredients: milk, salt, a “good bacteria,” and rennet. Cheesemakers can adjust the basic recipe by adding other elements, making all of the cheeses we’ve grown to know and love.

Cheese is a very complex topic. Did you know you can even obtain a Master of Cheese? France now has over 400 types of cheese, as does Italy. There are so many different cheeses that in 1962, French President Charles de Gaulle famously asked, "How can you govern a country which has two hundred and forty-six varieties of cheese?"

DIDMASTERKNOW?YOUOF

CHEESE IS DIVIDED INTO SEVEN MAIN CATEGORIES:

Fresh (for example, Ricotta), aged fresh (Mozzarella), soft white rind (Camembert), semi-soft (Port Salut), hard (Cheddar), blue (Gorgonzola) and flavour added (Pecorino with truffle). These styles are made in every cheese-producing country.

Thornloe Cheese Co. has been making cheese in northern Ontario since 1940 and has a beautiful selection of artisanal cheese. Their Temiskaming is a hard cheese with a yellowish inside. They also make a firm, smoked mozzarella and a Charlton, which is a goat milk cheese similar in flavour to feta.

Ontario has a wide selection of locally made cheeses, and the best part – some of the factories welcome tourists (we’re planning our trip now).

It won first place in its category at the British Empire Cheese Competition in 2016, and the Farmstead Smoked took the same award in its category two years running.

Back Forty in Eastern Ontario (est. 2000) was one of the province's first sheep’s milk producers. Try the Highland Blue, which has a natural rind and is less salty than most blue cheeses. Or try the Madawaska, which is salted and tangy. You can visit the farm in Mississippi Station (near Ottawa) on Saturdays from June to October.

Hard cheese such as Cheddar or blue cheese goes well with red wine. The Malivoire Farmstead Gamay ($21.95 at LCBO) would be a good option, or the Norman Hardie County Cabernet Franc ($29.20 at LCBO).

Pairing wine and cheese is not as simple as you may think. Not all types of cheese go with all wines. White wine is often better suited to cheese than red. The lighter the cheese, the lighter the wine should be. Fresh Ricotta would be best with a light wine like Trius Distinction Sauvignon Blanc ($19.95 at LCBO).

A soft white rind cheese such as Camembert could cope with a wine a little heavier, pairing the creaminess of the cheese and wine. Try the Westcott Estate Chardonnay ($29.95 at LCBO).

There are no rules for cheese and wine, so taste different combinations and see which you prefer. Look out for Ontario cheeses and support the local industry on the up. LL
