Beware the

SHINY Objects

There are times when many of us start thinking we need a change in our current space. Perhaps we’re tired of our kitchen, which feels a little too small. Maybe we’re pining for a larger closet in our master bedroom. Or maybe we don’t really love our yard after all! Sometimes this drives us to consider a renovation. But often, we go straight to dreaming about a new home. The idea of a new home gets our juices flowing. We start searching listings on the internet, going to open houses, booking showings with our realtor. Some of us are clear eyed in this process. We can articulate what is missing for us in our current home, and what the criteria should be for our new home search. If we’re really on the ball, we set these criteria realistically within the confines of the budget we have available. But alas, these types of people are the exception. Most of us during our search are in idealistic dream mode. We’re not quite sure how to define what we want, but we want something great!

Off we go, looking at all kinds of listings. Maybe we decide our dollar will go further if we move further away, so we start checking listings further afield. We may go to see a particular home, and it has an amazing family room‌ High ceilings, a beautiful walk-out, gorgeous fireplace. Or maybe it has a Wolf range in the kitchen, and we love the idea of feeling like a master chef in our own home. Perhaps the owner has amazing taste, and the furnishings are perfect. Here is where we are at risk of getting distracted by shiny objects. Yes, a particular home may have features that are to-die-for. There may even be several of these features in the same home. BUT, it could also be that these features come in a package that is otherwise not best for your family. The location may make your commute more difficult. Or the schools in the area might not be ideal for your kids. You could be missing some serious flaws in the home that some shiny objects have obscured. In order to avoid wasting time spinning your wheels, or worse, impulsively buy the wrong home, make sure you blend in some good old common sense with your excitement during a home search. Think about what you are really missing in your current home. Make a list of what you would ideally like in a new home. Separate it into MUSTS and WANTS. Make the list in the context of what you can actually afford. Get an agent who is realistic and can help with this process and keep you on track. Then go do your search with clear eyes, so that you get your MUSTS covered, hopefully along with at least a few shiny WANTS to add a little extra joy and excitement to your new home purchase!
