After months of cold and dreary weather, you might feel the urge to sprinkle bits of colour everywhere at the first sign of Spring — a throw pillow here, a candle there. The end-of-winter 'snowmelt' leaves most gardens in a seriously drab state. As for interior trends, Sherwin-Williams forecasts the outdoors will be coming in "with nature-inspired hues, warm earth tones (Urbane Bronze and Shiitake) and balanced greens (Evergreen Fog and Mount Etna)."

Alittle bit of sunshine. That's all it takes to fill a small gravel parking lot just off Mill Street south of Hwy 5. Hikers flock to the creekside trails, relishing the challenge that comes with every twist and turn. Others come for the view of Waterdown's iconic waterfall, Smokey Hollow, dropping about 10 metres into Grindstone Creek below. While little remains to suggest this stream was once anything but tranquil, Grindstone Creek tirelessly served two large mills as a power source in the 1800s. The valley was filled with industry and drew a small population. Soon, a village school was constructed along with a post office at the intersection of Dundas and Mill streets, forming the beginning of the Village of Waterdown.

While many original buildings of the time still stand, one of the most iconic is the stone structure we know today as Mill St & 5 American House. Still in operation, this restaurant and bar has been a landmark in the Village of Waterdown since 1824. It's a hot spot to grab pub food or a pint - and is also known as one of Ontario’s oldest hotels.

Still quaint and charming, the Village of Waterdown has grown beyond its original small town roots. The last two decades have come with a new construction boom, bringing more families of diverse backgrounds to the community.
