6 | WELCOME

to our 9th Anniversary issue. It’s difficult to believe that Trend has become such an essential and well-loved part of so many people’s lives. At first, we were told that there was nothing to do in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, but nine years later, we’re still exploring and delighting in sharing our new discoveries and old favourites. We’d like to thank our advertisers, supporters, contributors and our many readers, for helping us share our vision. We couldn’t have done it without you. Our corner of the world offers a wonderful combination of a vibrant cosmopolitan city, charming towns and quirky villages, a wealth of historic treasures, outstanding inland scenery and a spectacular coastline. We’re here to help you make the most of it!

DONNA MURRAY After graduating from Napier university with a BA Hons in photography and film in 2006, Donna then ventured into press photography, gaining national recognition for her style. A love of travel takes her around the world, winning SWPP travel photographer of year in 2011.

The joys of this time of year are often overlooked as summer fades away and we start to plan ahead for Christmas. Traditionally, the pace slows after the harvest season, making it a time of year to relax, spend time with friends and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. It might be wrapping up in cosy layers and taking a walk in the country, perhaps gathering brambles for a crumble, or the almost primitive joy of eating an apple from your own tree. It might be taking a break from the office and strolling through the park, delighting in scuffing childishly through russet drifts of fallen leaves, or simply meeting friends for a catch up over coffee and cake. As ever, it’s not just about living, it’s about living with style!

Getting a regular health check is a key way to look after your health, you can catch problems before they develop and take any necessary action. What is a health check? A health check is an examination to determine your current state of health, often carried out by a GP. Our comprehensive health checks give you an in-depth look into your health. Our basic medical includes a pre-assessment questionnaire covering your medical history, medications and lifestyle, a half-hour GP physical exam, a referral to specialists, if required (e.g. for an X-ray) and a full medical report of the findings.

Why are they important? The aim of a health check is to help identify and act on any health issues - we believe in prevention rather than cure. As we get older we become more vulnerable to illness. In order to minimise risk, regular medical health checks are recommended. Even if you feel fine you should have regular medicals to highlight concerns before they become problems. Having one health check a year can make all the difference to you and your loved ones - giving everyone peace of mind.

Our executive medicals include all of this as well as extensive blood profiling for a deeper look into your health. The blood profile looks at all areas of your biochemistry and haematology including liver and kidney function, thyroid, iron, prostate and vitamin D.

Put you and your loved ones minds at ease.

Gym Kit

Workout Top & Legging, Primark

If you’ve decided to tone up for the coming party season and you’re hitting the gym for the first time in ages, then it’s time to sort out some new active wear.

This is especially true if your options are limited to your old hockey skirt or sky blue polyester shorts and an Aertex polo shirt. There’s a bewildering range of choice of sportswear for all shapes and sizes and at all price points, so there’s no need for an old oversized t-shirt and unflattering leggings. Find something that makes you feel good before and after your work

out. Specialist brands tend to have the newest fabric technology, but M&S have a reliable and forgiving selection, and supermarkets have good budget lines. One of the most difficult things to find is a sports bra that fits, flatters and functions well, so shop around and get properly fitted. If you’re tall, then avoid bodysuits and cheap leggings as they will not provide

a comfortable fit. Look for longer length t-shirts provide coverage even in the most ambitious yoga poses and trousers with a soft, or roll over waistband for a forgiving fit.

We’ve all had days when we felt bloated, constipated or worse, and had to sidle urgently to the nearest toilet before Krakatoa is re-enacted. It’s a delicate subject, but there’s no need to suffer Irritable Bowel Syndrome, food intolerance or even food allergies, thanks to the expert team at the Aberdeen Clinic. Ken Park, clinical director, explained, 'Up to a fifth of us will suffer episodes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and for some, it can be very debilitating. The feeling that you don’t have control over your body can lead to social anxiety and withdrawal. We have a specialist IBS team at the Aberdeen Clinic and, since we are private, our patients benefit from our seamless approach using the latest technology and treatments and a quicker identification and resolution of the problem.

first step is to take an in-depth history to identify any worrying symptoms that may indicate an underlying problem like a stomach ulcer or even cancer. This can require tests such as a colonoscopy, a breath test and blood tests. All being well, underlying problems can

be excluded and patients then receive an individual care plan to identify and treat the triggers for their symptoms. No two patients are alike, but in many treatment involves an elimination diet to pinpoint problem foods. We find 80% of patients get better when we remove potential allergens or trigger foods. Other patients may require psychological help to deal with stress or emotional eating as a trigger of IBS episodes. There’s absolutely no need to put up with gut discomfort or IBS. These are very real problems, which have a major impact on people’s lives and which deserve the best care'.

Clocks have always fascinated me. Busy lives often mean we are ‘slaves to time’ so timepieces have become very important. Although time is all around us in the form of electronic gadgets, nothing compares to the large display on the wall, shelf or freestanding on the floor. Some tick, some chime, some have pendulums adding movement to a still room; some have history. We are fortunate to have them all at Finnies, come and see what ‘ticks’ your box.

to stop the clock/watch and wait for ‘time’ to catch up.

Battery/Quartz movements: Most will not be affected by adjusting backwards but, to be sure, stop the movement and once more allow ‘time’ to catch up.

Regardless of the technology, if it has an automatic date feature it is unwise to make adjustments around midnight. It will be attempting to change date itself and damage may occur.

In October time ‘falls back’, giving us that extra hour in bed. In general terms,

If you have any concerns about

It doesn’t seem like ten years since Duncan and Jacqui Grant first opened their bespoke fine jewellery business, but Lava Jewellery Design has emerged as one of the North-east’s best designer-makers of engagement and wedding rings. They produce stunning bespoke pieces and can even remodel family heirlooms or transform old jewellery into something to treasure. Jacqui has a tremendous flair for design and an innate understanding of what will flatter each client. She explained, ‘Our design process is very much a collaborative effort, whether it’s remaking an old necklace into something more contemporary, or creating a client’s dream engagement ring. We love being part of the really special moments in our clients’ lives and producing pieces that rekindle those memories whenever they are worn’.

Each design comes to life in the onsite workshop, where Duncan, who is recognised as one of Scotland’s most meticulous and highly-skilled craftsmen, works in wax or precious metal, setting stones and polishing Lava’s very special creations to perfection. Every piece is a miniature work of art. Some of their more unusual commissions include making Viking jewellery for the Guizer Jarl at Up Helly Aa, the Shetland fire festival and a miniature Star Wars lightsabre. Even the Prince of Wales is a fan

having received one of Lava’s striking silver and blue diamond kilt pins as a presentation gift! The team at Lava are also well regarded for their repair work, restoring broken treasures to top condition. Seasonal eating with Craig Wilson, The Kilted Chef of Eat On The Green Autumn root vegetables have never been more fashionable. Why not try roasting them on a baking tray or individual foil parcels? Any combination of carrots, parsnips, celeriac, sweet potatoes, neeps or beetroot will give you a tasty result. Root veg also makes amazing mash, either mixed with potatoes or in any combination you like. For something truly special, sautĂŠ some pancetta, onions or roasted garlic and mix it through, or add shredded cabbage or

sprouts, butter, cream and seasoning to make Colcannon. If you’re making stew or casserole, reduce the stock naturally rather than using a thickener and chop your veg much bigger than usual. It looks amazingly rustic and hearty. For an easy but impressive finishing touch, try shallow frying your root veg peelings and serving them up as crisps or a topping for your mash. Yum!

As the most decorated female exhibitor in the history of the Chelsea Flower Show, with 21 Gold Medals under her belt, it is no wonder that Brewin Dolphin chose Rosy Hardy to create their fifth, her first, Show Garden at the 2016 show. reating a Show Garden on Main Avenue was a dream come true for Rosy, who runs a plant nursery with her husband Rob in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Taking inspiration from that magnificent landscape, Rosy sought to create a garden that would educate as well as inspire. What was your vision for the garden? Our nursery sits alongside a wonderful chalk stream and I wanted to bring this vital natural resource to the attention of the public as these ancient waterways are now under threat thanks to pollution, overdevelopment and climate change. Chalk acts as a natural filter, creating incredibly pure water that remains a consistent temperature year-round. There are only 200 chalk streams in the world, with 160 in Southern England, but of those only nine are being maintained. These streams create a unique and essential ecosystem for both plants and wildlife. How did your garden reflect Brewin Dolphin as sponsor? Brewin Dolphin encourages its clients to invest in the present in order to protect their future, and that is exactly what we need to do if we want to preserve our chalk streams for future generations. What was the biggest challenge? Everything apart from the trees and hedging was grown by our nursery,

which meant we had only a matter of months to grow over 6,000 individual plants, all of which we grew peat-free. Also, our design included 30 tons of flints which had to be specifically sourced and then hand-washed to ensure our stream remained perfectly clear. What special features did you include in your garden? Our central feature was a giant sculpted coccosphere, which is a spherical skeleton of the microscopic plates that form chalk. If you view chalk under a microscope, this is what you see. We also created a ‘floating’ bridge over our stream, which we paved with bright pieces of recycled, crushed glass. This added a real splash of colour to our garden, which was something I wanted to do from the very first drawing. What was your goal with the planting? I created three areas of planting - gravel, damp and shade. Unlike some exhibitors, I want to show our visitors which plants grow well together so that anyone can re-create the same planting in their own garden, given similar conditions. What happened to your garden after the show? The large sculpture was donated to the brand new Horatio’s Garden at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow. The large hazel trees were returned to their home in Hampshire, and most of the plant material was sold off at the show, with the proceeds going to Naomi House Hospice.

Tallinn:

TRAVEL

WORDS BY EMMA LEIPER FINLAYSON

ith its rich history, stunning architecture and stylish residents, the Estonian capital of Tallinn has a lot to offer those looking for a charming weekend getaway. Tallinn’s medieval old town is an endless source of delight. Walk through the centuries-old town wall, explore churches galore, and delve into the town’s dungeons for a theatrical tour through Tallinn’s historical legends. Outside, the skyline is dotted with church spires, towers and weathervanes, and townsfolk spill out of the Olde Hansa restaurant dressed in traditional medieval garb, enticing visitors to come in and try the typical Estonian fare of pork and beer. But don’t let that make you think it’s a town stuck in the past. Alongside the picturesque landscape lies a city very much in the future. As the birthplace of Skype, Estonia has a strong e-commerce industry and Tallinners are particularly proud to

offer free wifi throughout the city. The town is equally well geared up to receive visitors, with excellent tourist guides and free English walking tours available. Jump on an open top tour bus to explore its many museums and beautiful parks, or scale the 20 floors of the famous TV Tower for a high altitude glass of wine and a spectacular view of the whole city. Having only exerted its independence in 1991, Tallinn has done well to brush off its Soviet past and build its own identity, but echoes of Russian dominance exist all over town, from the Russian built Nevsky Cathedral with its onion shaped domes, to the ubiquitous Russian tongue heard on the streets. It’s an intriguing city with a thoughtprovoking history and much to explore. Or simply kick back and enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the old town’s chic cafés and watch the medieval world go by. With regular flights leaving from Aberdeen, visitors can be basking in the Tallinn sunshine and supping an Estonian beer before they know it!

Fused glass artist Pat Mallen fell in love with her craft by accident...

and cooling process takes a full day and reaches temperatures of almost 800oC. It’s fair to say my electricity bill is pretty high! 'I’ve been inspired by many glass artists since I caught my fused glass bug. I love the work of Brenda Griffen, Amy Burhoe, Terri Stanley and so many others. I think I’ve already mentioned Pinterest being such a magical source of knowledge and inspiration for all types of artists. 'I’ve always been involved in arts and crafts, from my work as a painter to owning Meg’s Attic, the crafts shop in Banchory for a number of years. Even though I’m a relative latecomer to fused glass, I’m thrilled that I’ve been invited to exhibit in prestigious venues like the Milton Gallery, Drum castle and Castle Fraser as well as the Coo Cathedral. y love of glass started when I took a stained glass course in Aboyne. I really enjoyed it so I began to look for tools on the internet. That led me to a site full of absolutely beautiful fused glass. I didn’t know anything about it, except I knew that I really wanted to make my own, so I researched further. Pinterest was a great source of inspiration and I was mesmerised by what could be achieved.

'I’m happy to accept commissions, and it’s possible to see my work at a variety of local events and venues throughout the year. These include Focus Craft Shows, the Aboyne Games, the Banchory Show, The Milton Gallery, American Wives Association, The Tree Tops Hotel Aberdeen, Exclusively Highland Events and Woodend Barn. 'I love that so much is possible with glass. At 72, I’m still

'There was only one snag and it was a pretty major one. I needed a kiln and they are pretty expensive. Luckily, Santa, in the form of my dear husband, was very good to me that year! Initially there was a lot of trial and error while my pieces became more accomplished. After a while, I started to accumulate so many finished pieces, I had to think about where to sell my work so I joined Focus Crafters and people started to buy my pieces at crafts fairs throughout the North-east. 'Fusing glass is a fascinating process. There are so many colours available and so much is possible. It’s a craft that goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt. Each piece is individually designed and made. Precision is important, everything needs to be assembled without the smallest gap in between pieces as the finished glass needs to be 6mm thick. This is made of two layers. There’s a clear glass layer, topped with the coloured glass design. 'Once I’m happy with the design, the work is put into my kiln. The heat causes the glass to flow and fuse together. The fusing

I believe that having a creative outlet is very rewarding whether you’re eight or eighty. Anyone with any artistic flare can develop in their chosen field whether they are self-taught or not. It’s never to late to start. Classes and tuition is available out there, give it a try and most of all enjoy the experience you may discover hidden talents you did not know you had!' Until recently, I had become rather blasĂŠ about my ability to get through most days without falling over. Balance was a personal phenomenon that I just never gave much thought to - and then I tried Floatfit. illed as high-intensity interval training, Floatfit is a fusion of yoga and low-impact aerobics, requiring

Feeling rather smug after managing to stand up on my mat, I quickly realised that greater things were

going to be asked of us by our instructor, who stayed decidedly dry on poolside. As I feared, it was not long before the burpee reared its ugly head. Squatting and thrusting is a challenge on stationary ground, but try it while battling the waves created as the guy next to you enters the drink, and you will soon be clawing your way back onto your board along with everyone else.

Sport Aberdeen has just introduced this revolutionary new fitness regimen to the city and I had the pleasure, and resulting pain, of experiencing a pre-launch Floatfit class for myself. If, like me, you are curious about the appropriate attire for such a class, let me set the record straight. Unless you can walk on water, you will be jumping in to the pool to reach your tethered mat and, unless you have the equilibrium of a Tai Chi Master, you will fall off that mat several times in the thirty minutes that follow. So dress for wetness.

Floatfit is a bit like patting your head while rubbing your tummy - it combines two things that neither your brain nor your body agrees should happen simultaneously, but once you get the hang of it, you cannot wait to put your new skill to good use. And whether from the exercises themselves or from the constant struggle to re-mount the board, this is one exercise class that you will feel the benefits of for days afterwards. www.sportaberdeen.co.uk

For Aberdeen Harbour, honoured in the Guinness records as the oldest business in the UK, reaching its 900th year as a going concern is not only an incredible possibility, but almost a certainty. Established in 1136 with a charter from King David I, it could easily be argued that Aberdeen Harbour has been fundamental to the very success of the Granite City.

Through it all, those in charge of managing this great gateway to foreign markets have made it a priority to continually adapt and upgrade, resulting in what today is considered one of the most modern ports in Europe, with over four million tonnes of cargo passing through its waterways each year. Much of the recent modernisation came with the introduction of oil and gas to the area, but the foundations for prosperity were built on industries as varied as fishing, shipbuilding and textiles.

Not surprisingly, the harbour has been through a lot since that time, falling victim to Viking attacks,

Gift books… all wrapped up! WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

As gifts go, books entertain, amuse and educate and last way longer than chocolate. If you’re not skilled with the scissors and sticky tape - you know who you are - they also offer the advantage of being really easy to wrap. Here are our favourite new releases…

For the cooks and foodies

For the gardeners

For the explorers

Mark Greenaway is recognised as one of Scotland’s foremost chefs, so it’s not surprising that his cookery book, Perceptions, is beautifully presented. It’s a great gift choice for aspirational cooks, with mouthwatering photography interspersed with Mark’s pithy tales of starting out in the kitchen, supplier details and even a guide to what Mark calls, 'Terms, meanings and fancy words'. There are some seriously impressive recipes, from elegant canapes all the way through to divine desserts, which actually tempt you to lick the page. Priced at £30, but can be found cheaper online. If you really want to impress, you’ll have to take the recipient out to dinner too.

The horticulturally minded and armchair gardeners will drool over Florelegium, which is a facsimile edition of the Hortus Eystettensis. The beautiful full-colour botanical engravings by Basilius Besler show the flowers which adorned the palatial gardens of Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen around 1600. At £12.99 from Taschen, this edition is a bit of a bargain, given that a first edition will set you back over £400,000.

The Atlas Obscura is a brilliant choice for those who like to wander and explore the stranger corners of the world. From Antarctica’s Trinity Church via Cuba’s valley of concrete dinosaurs, to the granaries of Great Zimbabwe, it’s utterly absorbing and brings back the joy of discovery and the unexpected. Perfect for anyone heading off on a gap year, or curious friends who love the quirkier side of life. Workman publishing £25.

“Trot along to the World Horse Welfare Centre near Kincardine O’Neil for a fantastic family day out…”

If you have pony-obsessed youngsters, then a day at Belwade Farm, just off the A947, is the perfect choice for an enjoyable few hours. The World Horse Welfare centre’s farm is open from 11 to 4pm on Wednesday to Sunday and the staff are happy to share the stories of each of the sixty-odd horses and ponies who live there. They range from enormous placid Clydesdales to cheeky little Shetlands. The setting, in the upper Dee Valley, is particularly lovely at this time of year. Take in the scenery with one of Belwade’s nature walks. The longest route is five miles, but there are easier jaunts along the riverside and through the woods. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the local wildlife. Pop into the visitor centre where you can pick up a nature trail map or a guide to Belwade’s fairy houses. If you are very lucky, very quiet and wish hard, you might even spot the fairies flying around. For a tranquil lull, explore Belwade’s stone circle.

It’s a beautiful, serene spot. If you’re keen to try geocaching, there’s a mini trail on the farm too. If all the horse patting has left you a little pooped, then head for Belwade’s bistro. You’ll find everything from locally sourced bacon rolls and scrumptious home-made tray bakes, to family favourites for lunch. Naturally, there’s a decent children’s menu and a well-considered selection of gluten-free and dairy-free choices. Fraught non-drivers will be overjoyed by the Prosecco on the drinks list. They’ll even provide a picnic for al fresco eating if you book in advance. Belwade is part of World Horse Welfare, the international horse charity which improves the lives of horses around the world. ADVERTISEMENTS THE LAST WORD

“...if a call comes in from abroad in the middle of the night, I deal with it on the spot. Looking after the customer is the absolute key to success for me.”

rue grit is a characteristic of Yorkshire folk and Jeanette Forbes, chief executive of the PCL Group on Aberdeen’s Regent Quay, has got it in spades. Her company has been a total IT service provider to the oil and gas industry worldwide for 17 years and leading that has been no 9-5 sinecure. 'It’s my company, so my responsibility,' says Jeanette, 'I am on call 24/7 so that if a call comes in from abroad in the middle of the night, I deal with it on the spot. Looking after the customer is the absolute key to success for me.' Equally, Jeanette gets a buzz out of seeing her staff, including son Chris, grow the business with her. She is much in demand for mentoring young women interested in a career in oil and gas and firmly believes that although challenging, it will continue to provide excellent career prospects for many years to come. However, nothing stands still in the helter-skelter world of this dynamic lady. For example, when Jeanette became frustrated with office-cleaning arrangements, what did she do? 'I just decided to launch my own cleaning company so that I had control of a necessary aspect of business,' she says. And there’s more excitement on the horizon. Jeanette has embarked on a venture to open

an upmarket wine bar called Grape & Grain on Aberdeen’s Thistle Street in what was a tearoom. 'Business trips take me to London frequently,' she adds, 'and I feel there is room in Aberdeen for a stylish establishment with a difference. 'There will be no TVs anywhere in the wine bar as I want people to enjoy the art of conversation again. We are installing a baby grand piano for music nights, including jazz sessions. Scotland also has a great larder and we hope to demonstrate that we understand what food and drink is about. Cheese and wine evenings are on the menu for the wine bar which is due to open in the coming months.' It’s all a far cry from Jeanette’s early days from helping out in her grandparents’ wholesale fish business in Halifax, to studying at night for a BSc in computing, on top of being a mum-of-two and rising through the ranks to her present eminence. The new venture is another step along the way with Jeanette bucking the trend of a deflated bar and restaurant trade in the North-east. Ever positive, she hopes Grape & Grain will be more gain than pain.
