Spring is traditionally a period of celebration, as we emerge from the depths of winter, cast off a few layers and bring some more colour, both literally and metaphorically into our lives. It’s a time of growth, green shoots and new opportunities to remake ourselves, to discover more about ourselves and our surroundings.

Armed with an obligatory glass of wine, my friend and I delved right in to India with a plate of poppadoms and a selection of dips, before tucking into Smoked Indian Cottage Cheese and King Scallops. Beautifully presented and drizzled with a light sauce, it was a perfect introduction to the main meal to come.

My friend joined me in Nepal for her meal of Himali Hansch Bhutuwa, a tender barbequed duck breast with green herbs, spices, and spring onion. It was enough on its own, but worked well with the fluffiest ever naan bread to savour the dish’s sauce dressing.

I crossed over the border into Nepal for my main meal, and my choice of Dal Bhat Masu was a pick and mix platter of Nepalese goodies. Described as one of the country’s traditional dinners, it was an array of little dishes that included lamb, lentils and rice, with a tomato based dressing. It was deliciously filling

From the food, to the taste, to the ambience; everything in the restaurant is quintessentially Nepalese and Indian. You don’t need to travel around the world to experience authentic South Asian cuisine. It’s right here in Aberdeen, at 8848.

I have it on good authority that within the fashion and interiors world, what is ‘in’ this season is Green and Greenery? I think that might just work well in the garden! My take on what is in vogue for 2017? I see clients looking for a slightly softer feel to the garden, less edge, more romance with a shift toward sustainable materials. There is

still a strong interest in making the garden an extension of the home. Vertical gardening is also making an impact, which is a great advantage if you have a small space to work with. There are loads of fun options out there on the market, from pocket hanging gardens, living moss wall gardens, living wall art, to growing your own with a wall mounted planter veg trug! Don’t forget the accessories too! Add throws, lanterns, candles outdoor rugs to add the finishing touch.

Can she and Grandma Rosie get Robbie back on song?

Kemnay gym and café to open in Spring 2017 The village of Kemnay is set to have its first independent gym opening in Spring 2017. Greenery: Pantone colour of the year for 2017 and a hot new wedding trend. Described as ‘a refreshing and revitalising shade, greenery is symbolic of new beginnings’. Perfect for a wedding, then, in more ways than one! Greenery is nature’s neutral. It goes with pretty much any other colour so you can design your wedding without being limited by the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses, the groomsmens' ties or the venue - or even the time of year. Whatever flowers you choose for your wedding party, they will go with greenery.

Iona looks to crowdfunding to create her debut

We have two pairs of tickets up for grabs for the opening night performance on Tuesday 20 June at HMT. To enter, go to trendmagazine.co.uk and answer this question:

Who starred in the Wedding Singer film? Aberdeenshire folksinger, Iona Fyfe, has become one of Scotland’s finest young ballad singers, rooted in the singing traditions of the North-east of Scotland. A finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017, Iona is originally from Huntly and a fine exponent of Doric. She is now looking to raise funds to create her debut album, set for release in January 2018. Iona is a student of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland which means she is ineligible to apply to most arts funds. Without the support of a record label, Iona is aiming to raise £10,000 to cover the costs of creating an album. To donate visit ionafyfemusic.com/Indiegogo

But what does it mean in terms of style? Well, nature’s style knows no bounds - there are infinite options! Greenery, in colour and elements, brings the outside in to your venue. It’s a perfect foil for natural stones and wood but goes equally well with a high glamour look of white, ivory and blush in an ‘undone’ look which signals a move away from highly symmetrical contrived arrangements of previous years. Greenery is classy and cool and perfect for every season! 70 Ardarroch Rd, Aberdeen AB24 5QS Tel: 01224 639937 fairytale-events.eu

A trip to rem here can you find one of the world’s great driving roads, discover deserted beaches, ancient castles, spectacular scenery, sample freshly caught seafood and spot the wildest of wildlife? The answer is almost on our own doorsteps, with the North Coast 500 route. It’s easy to forget we have some of the most impressive landscapes, food and heritage in the world, when so few of us ever explore what lies beyond Inverness. It’s as if we’ve decided to cram in 80% of the mountains and lochs into a fifth of the country, but it makes for a brilliant trip. The route offers plenty to entertain and astound the whole family, provided you remember to fill up your petrol tank whenever the opportunity presents itself. The North Coast 500 route starts in Inverness before crossing through to the Applecross Peninsula on the West Coast, then meanders up the sides of sea lochs, across the top of Caithness to John O’Groats before returning via the quiet coastal towns and villages of the East Coast. A casual glance at Google Maps would lead you to believe that nothing but wilderness lies north of Inverness, and sometimes it does feel like a parallel universe version of Scotland, where you have the entire country to yourselves. The rise of internet shopping must be a joy for anyone who has to travel for seven hours before they reach a city.

ember Some amazing twists and turns, climbs and scenic stretches make the route a delight for drivers and even more fascinating for passengers. Almost every corner brings a magnificent view. Even the occasional encounter with a grouse with a death wish merely serves as an opportunity to take in the scenery as it randomly wanders the roadway. If you’re lucky, you may spot a huge eagle overhead, or see foxes, ospreys, otters, badgers and any number of tiny scurrying things you’re not entirely sure about. Possibly voles. It’s a route that offers something for everyone. You can rough it, wild camping along the way or stay at official campsites, or take advantage of some truly luxurious accommodation like the 5* Torridon, or the Albannach in Lochinver, which holds the only Michelin Star in the North Highlands. aving spent my childhood in America, the closest I ever came to a real castle was on a visit to Walt Disney World. Despite it being over-commercialised and purportedly inhabited by a fictional princess, it was still the most romantic thing I had ever seen. Today I live within shouting distance of Craigievar, the very castle

Dunnottar Castle, one of Scotland’s most striking fortresses. Perched atop a daunting rocky outcrop, Dunnottar evokes romantic feelings of another kind. Standing among its ruins, it is almost possible to imagine the history that was written here over hundreds of years, from the siege of William Wallace to the defence of Scotland’s crown jewels

that is rumoured to have inspired the iconic Disney landmark and just one of Scotland’s splendid offerings.

from Oliver Cromwell.

Craigievar Castle, just outside Alford, is a seven-storey Baronial masterpiece which served as home to the Forbes family for more than three centuries. With its pink tint, imposing tower and multiple spired turrets, this fairy-tale building would suit any young maiden looking for her happily ever after. Through guided tours, visitors to Craigievar are invited to roam the halls and secret staircases that look much as they did when it was a beloved family home. Not far up the road near the coastal town of Stonehaven looms

A personal favourite, Castle Fraser in Inverurie is almost too picturesque to be real. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of stunning woodlands, you almost expect a medieval knight on a cloaked steed to greet you as you approach this elaborate palace. A tour leads you through a collection of Fraser family treasures, reveals the spectacular panorama from atop the tower, and even enlightens you on the castle’s fabled resident ghost. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a castle romantic, but whatever your definition, Scotland certainly has plenty to offer.

Meet illustrative textile designer Lindsay Johnson of local favourite Lindsay & Yoshi

After graduating from Gray’s School of Art, I went on to set up my own creative business in 2011. We’re a creative family, my sister Tracey is an artist and our parents were always very supportive. I launched my first collection of silk scarves six years ago and since then I have worked from my home studio in rural Aberdeenshire. I had my first child in January, so it’s just as well I work from home! I show my work at contemporary design fairs including Aberdeen’s first ‘Etsy’ fair, Woodend Barn’s annual ‘Flock’ fair and ‘Handmade at Kew’ in London. When I left art school, I thought about what my

I figured my best move would be to try to create it for myself. I receive a great response to my work, but as with any small business, brand exposure has been challenging. I’m a small independent business so it’s really important for me to attend events and show my work. It means I can meet customers and other local designers. It is really inspiring to be part of that community, we help each other and our businesses

eorge Burnett’s love of squash inspired him to have a go at opening a sports shop in Aberdeen more than 30 years ago and today, the proud 67-year-old Torry loon is still playing the game at the city’s squash racquets club at Mannofield where he has twice been club captain. What’s more, he is also celebrating 25 years in his shop, Thistle Sports, in Rose Street. ‘What clinched it for me to turn my grocer’s shop in South Mount Street into my first sports shop, was the revolution in squash with the advent of graphite racquets,’ says George. ‘It made an unbelievable difference to my game and I started to beat players I had never beaten before.’ Pardon the pun, but he then added a vital string to his bow by starting a racquet restringing and regripping service which has given him a distinct edge in the harsh competitive world of retail sports outlets. Out of sight of customers is a £6,000 Wilson Biardo machine which one of his young assistants, tennis champ Alan Ross, was operating during my chat in the back shop. Also on duty was George’s stepson Grant Skene. ‘One of my proudest moments outside of the shop,’ George adds, ‘was to bring Pakistan’s then world squash champion, Jahangir Khan, to the squash club at Inverurie in the 1980s. He had been unbeaten for six years and wowed a big crowd with an exhibition of his skills and a willingness to play against up-and-coming local players. Staging the event cost me £3,000 but it was worth every penny and we did manage to break even.’

Prior to his shop venture, George acknowledges a huge debt to those who trained him to be a field sales representative for Aberdeen Journals which he joined in 1976. ‘I was given a territory in the city’s Holburn Street, Union Street and Market Street and I revelled in that job so much that my selling success earned me the use of a new company car, not a hand-me-down from the senior reps.’ Not such a success was his promotion to tele ads trainer and George took his leave of the company after six years. Apart from racquet sports, George says his core business includes supplying rugby, swimming and hockey gear. ‘Hockey has been a massive growth area,’ he adds, ‘and people can now pay up to £300 for a top-class stick.’ So what of the future? Is George about to hang up his boots? ‘It’s true to say I am not full-time any more,’ he says, ‘but I still get as big a buzz from the sports trade as I did when I started. I have also been very privileged to have had a ringside seat at major sporting events such as Wimbledon, not bad for a lad who hated school and left at 15. Whatever happens, my goal will never change which is to keep Thistle Sports as the best independent sports shop in Aberdeen and the North-east. ‘And, by the way, I don’t like to brag but some years ago, we did restringing for Andy Murray when the young tennis knight was in Aberdeen for a Scotland-England international.’ Game, set and match to kingmaker George!
