For most of us, December and January couldn’t provide more of a contrast. December is a whirl of parties, shopping trips, tinselled monitors, Secret Santas and stuffing both the turkey and ourselves. January often leaves us feeling deflated, a bit tired and washed out, probably with a bigger credit card bill than usual. Many will be determined that 2017 will be a year of health, fitness and clean living - and we’ll start as soon as we’ve finished off all the Christmas chocolate.

For the past six years, Dean Morrice has been kept secret by some of the North-east’s most gloriously stylish women, but now the secret is out! Previously, Dean worked from home to transform tired tresses into stunning styles but now he’s opening his first ever salon in the city. Chez Dean will offer his unique blend of exclusive and personal haircare to a wider clientele at his innovative new salon on Queen’s Lane South. The new salon reflects Dean’s exuberant personality, mixing industrial chic with touches of the baroque and enlivening the monochrome scheme with accents of fuchsia pink. Dean is joined by his
sister Abigail, who is an amazingly talented stylist, while Olivia specialises in producing perfectly elegant brows and Louise’s beauty treatments – which include waxing, make up and over 130 shades of Gelish polish for the perfect manicure - guarantee you’ll be looking good. Inside, each of the four staff have their own area - designed like tiny houses - so their clients can get complete individual attention in an atmosphere of calming privacy. Dean is known for his gift of working with his clients, being honest about their hair and helping them find the style and colour that most
flatters them. He’s also known for going the extra mile for his regular clients, sometime starting work at 7am. Indeed, Chez Dean even opens seven days a week, with late night from Tuesday to Friday to suit client lifestyles. It’s typical of Dean’s close relationship with his clients and desire to offer the best hair and beauty care in the city. After all, as Dean’s favourite maxim goes, 'We only do fabulous!'

NORTH-EAST At a time when our corner of the world is suffering economic maladies which are the result of geo-politics rather than being of our own making, it makes sense for each of us, as consumers and as businesses, to support each other. Organisations like local councils, the Chamber of Commerce and Scottish Enterprise have launched a campaign to ask businesses to increase the amount of business they do locally, boosting the local economy and securing jobs.
As consumers, we can do our bit by seeking out restaurants and food shops that work with local suppliers, or supporting shops and galleries that sell locally made goods. Wouldn’t you rather your purchases kept local people and businesses going? You don’t need to be a big business to join up and you don’t need to spend more, just think about what you buy anyway and switch to a local supplier if you can. You can find out more about how to sign up your business at buynortheast.co.uk

here is something ritualistic about getting the garden ready for winter. Everything is going to sleep and in that final tidy up you are preparing the now dormant garden for new life next spring. Just hold that positive thought when you are clearing pile upon pile of leaves, which incidentally is the first job to be completed in our winter tidy up!
“Give the lawn a good rake with a springbok rake and aerate either with a garden fork or you can buy a tool that does this specifically.
HOMES, GARDENS & INTERIORS | 63
If you have the space, compost these in bins, bought or built it doesn’t matter. If you don’t have space for dedicated bins, put the leaves into plastic bin liners and perforate the bags to let the air circulate. Next year you can use the leaf mould as a mulch on the borders, which will help to keep the soil from being compacted by hard rains and keep the moisture in when it’s dry. Tender perennials and bulbs near to the surface will benefit from a good layer of mulch to protect them through the winter months too and as a general soil improver it does a great job. Some of us want to cut seed heads down and make things neat and tidy and others prefer to leave these through the winter, enjoying the forms and colour they provide in the winter borders. If you are on the tidy side, perhaps the compromise would be to tidy the borders that are in your main view but leave one? The wildlife would be grateful to you for the winter shelter and food and in turn will help to keep the balance of nature in your garden next season. Don’t forget to put out feed and water for the birds too! At the first sign of frosts, protect your smaller non-hardy plants and winter tender bulbs by potting them up and storing these somewhere warmer for the winter. Larger tender plants that cannot or do not like to be moved can be protected using cloches, hessian or horticultural fleece.
Give the lawn a good rake with a springbok rake and aerate either with a garden fork or you can buy a tool that does this specifically. After raking and aerating, and while the grass is still short from recent mowing, spread a thin layer of top dressing evenly all over the surface, and work it in with a stiff broom. I like to add in sharp sand/builders sand, which is gritty and helps to open up the soil below, especially if it’s prone to moss. Regular top-dressing is the only way to improve the soil under an existing lawn; if the soil is seriously poor, you can top-dress in both Spring and Autumn for quicker results. You can also use several small regular applications of top dressing to fill in hollows or to help even up bumpy lawns. Prune deciduous shrubs and trees and if you’re not sure how to do this, I can recommend purchasing a copy of ‘The Pruner’s Handbook’ by John Malins, published by David & Charles. Very helpful! The last touch might be to add a little bit of colour by planting winter bedding. Even winter pansies dotted about the garden can lift the spirits on a cold, damp winters day.

Winter Sun:
If you need a few days in the sun, but want rather more than a beach break and an endless supply of watered down cocktails, you could make a worse choice than Marrakech. he combination of dusty sunbaked walls, a bewildering maze of market stalls and Moroccan cuisine give the city a timeless air of exotic intrigue. It’s easy to get lost, so abandon the idea of a must-see daily schedule and just rejoice in the pleasure of new discoveries. There’s plenty to do if you want to explore the city and its surroundings. Start with the Bahia Palace, where Bou
Ahmed, a slave who worked his way up to Grand Vizier lived with all four of his wives and two dozen concubines. Frankly, it’s amazing that he found the time to rule the country and build such a magnificently decorated building. The rich harem suites boast stained glass, silk hangings and painted ceilings, while the grand courtyard offers a cool respite from the late morning heat.
Although children are always welcomed, the city may be more suitable for a trip for two, or a girly weekend as traffic is undisciplined and the press of the crowd can make it easy to get separated. Keen shoppers won’t be disappointed. As well as typical modern designer labels in the city’s shopping thoroughfares, the souq teems with possibilities and opportunities

for a little haggling. Leather goods, spices and local handicrafts are popular buys, though if you don’t like being pestered, the pleasures of the souq can soon give way to feeling harassed. In the evening, head for Djemaa el-Fna, the city’s main square which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s like the stories of Arabian Nights brought to life, with musicians, performers and snake charmers, outdoor restaurants, henna tattoo artists, acrobats and slapstick performers all hoping for a few coins. Unfortunately, there are still a few
There are also plenty of day trips to choose from, from touristy camel rides to sunrise hot air balloon flights over the Atlas Mountains. You can also opt for longer trips which will take you to explore desert settlements and traditional ways of life. If you’d rather spend your time in the kitchen, then there are plenty of cookery classes to choose from. Try La Maison Arabe or Faim des Epices for an unforgettable lesson. If the sights and smells of the city start to feel overwhelming, then restore your equilibrium in the manicured greenery of the Jardin Majorelle. It’s best to go early before the recently restored gardens and Berber Museum get crowded.
Another relaxing alternative is a visit to one of the city’s many spas and traditional hammams, where you can emerge feeling like a new person after bathing and a vigorous massage. The Heritage Spa, Hammam Rosa Bonheur and Les Bains des Orients are all well regarded. For accommodation, the best option is one of the many small independent riads, which offer a more romantic and exclusive feel than anything by Best Western, and often come with five star ratings on Tripadvisor and other travel websites. Many have their own spas and restaurants if you want more than a base for exploring. There are no direct flights from Aberdeen, so flying via London or Amsterdam may be quickest. Even then, many flights make one or more stops en route, so compare flight times carefully. Ryanair, Easyjet, Royal Air Maroc and many others offer flights from London, with timings under four hours.

Award winning Gray’s graduate Izzy Thomson discusses her approach to painting, ahead of her latest exhibition...
or as long as I can remember I have always had a desire to create, to mould and to make marks: with mud, with straw, in sand, on paper. I became interested in painting by seeing what other painters were doing. I was seduced by its juiciness, its versatility and ability to make visible anything I imagined. ‘My painting practice explores our misplaced wild world. Through playful representations of mountainous landscapes, I paint to understand the value of the wilderness in our fast taming world. My paintings tell stories. Painting is offered to me as an endless stage, where I can tell through colour, shape and character, the stories that I see and imagine. It is a different type of narration to film and book, because like poetry, it does not really end. ‘At the start of my honours year, I was awarded a travel scholarship by the Cross Trust. I chose to visit Iceland for a visual research trip. I journeyed through an
enigmatic landscape. This landscape gave me ideas as to how Scotland’s landscape was formed. Now, when I go walking in the Scottish mountains, I imagine them breathing like volcanoes. My work’s all about wild spaces - spaces in which one can feel a sort of ‘pin-prickling’ selfawareness. I read a lot of poetry and books, watch films and feel myself ‘taking’ from these sources all the time. Katherine Bradford is a brand new hero of mine. David Lynch is an older one. ‘Each of my paintings starts with drawings and research from outside. Once I’m back in
Left: 'Night Time Bathing'. Oil on board Centre: 'Tammie Norrie's Journey'. Oil on Canvas Right: 'House on the hill'. Oil on paper
the studio, I play. I make oil paintings with “added ingredients”. When painting, I need to concentrate only on the action of painting: the placing of this “squiggly smear” next to that “scratchy scribble”. I like my paintings to feel buttered with the history of my earlier marks, so I approach painting in a similar way to sculpture or drawing: pushing, pulling and layering marks on the surface.
‘Even though I graduated with first class honours, being an artist is not an easy option. I think a lot of young artists who are fresh out of art school and thrust into the real world find it hard to sustain an artistic career, whilst earning enough money to stay afloat. I know I do, but I’m completely determined to find a way to do it. ‘Right now, my ambitions involve being in a position to always be able to make and exhibit work. I was lucky enough to be awarded a residency at Leith School of Art, and my goal is to keep working as a painter, whilst continuing my research and undergoing residencies in wild places. I also hope to complete an M.A in painting in the future.’ Izzy’s latest paintings will be on show from 30 November until 18 December in Aberdeen Arts Centre & Theatre at 33 King Street. They can also be viewed on her website: izzythomson.wix.com/isabellethomson

Art quiltmaker, textile artist and ceramicist Jane Appelbee discusses growing up in a house full of artists‌
DESIGN | 79
can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in making. It was inevitable. My mother was the WWII Official War Artist, Frances MacDonald, and my father was a Civil List Pensioner for Services to Art, Leonard Appelbee. Their work is in several national collections including the Tate and the Imperial War Museum. Naturally, they and their artist friends encouraged me to be creative, but I also had a great love of nature and the environment. I trained as a zoologist, then in oceanography and finally I became an environmental scientist. Now the beautiful Scottish landscape and wildlife inspire my work. I work in both textiles and ceramics. I fell in love with ceramics at the age of ten. Being dyslexic, I tend to think and work in three dimensions so I preferred ceramics to drawing and painting. I simply love the feel of raw clay and the way it transforms during making and firing. I prefer to hand build rather than use a wheel because sculpture is my real interest in using clay.
Left: 'Quiet Reflections' Centre: 'Birds' Right: 'Winter Sunrise'
A few years later, I discovered working with textiles. I was making practical things and clothes. My early quilts were very traditional, then I took a City and Guilds qualification in Design and Craft with Patchwork and Quilting. This opened my eyes to the possibilities and techniques within art quilting. I work almost exclusively with natural fibre fabric that I have dyed myself. I do also have a great interest in the three dimensional qualities that quilting can bring to textiles. I love the way you can stitch 3 independent layers together and they become something that behaves in
a completely different manner with a different texture. I use a sewing machine often but I also love to add at least some hand stitching to my wall hangings. I tend to have several projects on the go at the same time. When I finish a project or a commission, I tend to swap to the other medium at least for a while. My goal is to keep evolving and improving my work and to increase the number of exhibition opportunities available. For the last 5 years I have opened my studio during NEOS in September which is a wonderful event. It is so good to have the chance to actually meet clients and interested visitors and chat with them. I exhibit and sell both ceramics and textiles at NEOS. You can see my work at Larks Gallery in Ballater and I also take part in both Art Aboyne and the Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber Festival Exhibition in the summer. I’ve had my quilts exhibited in London and I have at least one quilt at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham each year. This international show is the biggest in Europe. In 2016 my quilt 'Starry Starry Night' won a 'Judges favourite' award at this show. You can also see my work at my studio, by appointment, throughout the year. My ceramics range in price from £30 for a small smoke fired pod to £200 for larger bird sculptures while my quilts and wall hangings start at £150 and go up to £1800 depending on the size and complexity of the piece. Smaller framed textile pieces are available for £50 to £100. I’m always happy to discuss commissions and can be contacted by e-mail at modiolus@dircon.co.uk

iterally translated, the word Fettercairn means ‘foot of the mountain’ which makes perfect sense when you first lay eyes upon this village, nestling comfortably amongst the foothills of the Grampian Mountains. But despite its perfectly picturesque appearance today, this conservation town has a colourful, and sometimes violent, history. Established as a township over a thousand years ago, Fettercairn has hosted Queens, been home to a Prime Minister and has even been the scene of the murder of a Scottish King. Perhaps most intriguing was the suspected murder of King Kenneth II in 995 by Lady Finella, whose son had been killed by the King. According to legend, she lured the monarch into her home, released a score of arrows into him, and then fled for her life before eventually throwing herself over a waterfall in nearby St. Cyrus to avoid capture. Located a short distance from the Cairn o’ Mount, an ancient military route, Fettercairn has seen its fair share of discord and was even burned to the ground in 1645,
at the peak of its prosperity, by the Marquis of Montrose. Unfazed, the residents resolved to restore their glorious village and erected a host of spectacular buildings which remain today. Depending on which way you approach Fettercairn, you will either be greeted by the Royal Arch, a gothic structure erected in 1864 to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, or the red sandstone Parish Church, built in 1803 and towering strikingly atop a grassy knoll. As a reminder of the town’s commercial history, the mercat cross stands prominently in the town square and the Fettercairn Distillery sits proudly at the edge of town, as it has done for almost two hundred years. If you want to live a part of Fettercairn’s history for yourself, book in to Fasque House, just to the north of town and former home to Prime Minister William Gladstone. Available for private hire or holiday lets, this baronial mansion is just one more reminder that this seemingly sleepy village has a rather lively past.

owever, if you are only just realising that the jacket you’ve had for three years no longer fits, perhaps it’s time to invest in a few new pieces this season. It can take quite some time trailing from shop to shop to find the perfect fit, length and material of your suit, so here are a few rules to help along the way... Your jacket and trouser material should ideally match, and by investing in high quality fabrics such as Italian wool and well fitted tailoring, you can rest assured that this suit will last Epsom coat, Checked jacket, Shirt , Silk tie & Checked trousers, all Next.

you decades. Remember that a notch lapel won’t make the cut when it comes to black tie events; so go for a peak or shawl shaped lapel. As for colour, you can never go wrong with the traditional black suit. However, to mix things up a little you could opt for popular midnight blue or more adventurous navy velvet for a vintage, smoking jacket vibe. A white shirt is a staple in any man’s wardrobe, and for black tie occasions you should definitely have that special one that feels and looks more luxurious than the rest. Finally, accessories are the finishing additions to your top-notch look. Impress your colleagues by knowing how to tie your own bow tie, stand proud with the shiniest shoes and never forget the suave touch of the pocket square and cufflinks.

In the run up to Christmas and the dark nights of January, it’s sometimes difficult to find stuff to do with the kids, especially if you’d rather tackle creative projects than take an expensive day trip out of town.
e’ve rounded up a few kits and books that will keep both you and the kids happy and occupied with lots of interesting ideas and even the chance to make a few festive decorations and gifts…

and girls and they all can be achieved in seven steps or fewer, which is perfect if your little ones have a miniscule attention span. If the kids are keen on making Christmas presents, then We Love to Craft – Christmas has fabulously festive projects aimed at 12-15 year olds including fabric covered letters, festive banners and advent calendars. If you’re stuck for ideas, searchpress.com have the widest selection of crafts books including some fantastic ones for kids. The Bumper Book of Crafty Activities has over 100 ideas and templates are included for all the projects, so a lack of artistic skill isn’t a drawback. Better yet, the projects will appeal to boys
The step by step instructions are helpful, but many projects need a sewing machine, as does Debbie Shore’s excellent book Half Yard Kids. Both books have a lot of ideas that could make appealing gifts for an indulgent granny or auntie, particularly if it comes with the consolation of a bottle
Hobbycraft is a great source of craft kits and materials, with something to suit all ages and budgets. You could make paper chains, or get three fillable plastic baubles for the Christmas tree, at just £1, which each family member can personalise. For something different try a needle felting kits like this Christmas Robin. It’s simple to make, though the needle is sharp, so it’s one for older kids unless Granny will be impressed by your four year old’s mastery of bad words. If it doesn’t look quite like the illustration, well, no-one really minds!
the only choice for fabrics in the city. W Enterprises at Kingswells is great for paper supplies, but check access online as the AWPR has meant some diversions.
For teenage girls, Kirsty Alsop has produced a range of kits that can be fun for a girly bonding activity. The lip balm kit is simple to use, less messy than you might expect and the end results make a practical and thoughtful stocking filler for a friend or relation. You can also find lots of project ideas and templates online. Crafts aren’t just for girls, so you’ll find a large selection of wooden kits, like this flying dragon, or model kits designed for boys from 8 to 80.

96 | THE LAST WORD
An hour in the company of Aberdeen boutique hotel owner Gary Atkinson and I am punchdrunk at just how many hats the adopted Aberdonian wears. Talk about the old adage that you ask a busy man to get something done and it will be done. ary’s nerve centre is Carmelite - a hotel, cocktail bar, restaurant, and live music venue in the heart of what is now called the Merchant Quarter of the city, in which he and three others set up this marketing consortium with Aberdeen City Council.
a vital role to play in promoting our region and the list of our associate members such as the city’s two universities, Visit Scotland, Visit Aberdeenshire, both local authorities and Scottish Enterprise is proof of that,' he adds.
Adopted by the Council, this 'edgy' cultural area now befits all the new city centre wayfaring maps, promoting connectivity from the city's transport hub through and beyond Union Street. It embraces independent businesses, whilst including a collection of 8 hotels (over 800 bedrooms), a mix of over 40 independent restaurants and bars and, of course, surrounded by shopping outlets. 'We offer an eclectic mix for people traveling
Not surprisingly, the Association almost has a cheerleading function given the tough trading conditions there have been since the severe job losses in the North Sea. Recently back from a Scottish Chambers lobbying week in Houses of Parliament, Gary says, 'We have a duty to highlight £billions of investment ongoing in our region, and we need to inspire confidence in those seeking and continuing to invest here. There's a lot of great things going
through the quarter to and from the city’s transport hub and retail centres,' he says. But hang on.
on and we must broadcast that loud and proud.'
That’s just the start. Gary is also Chairman of the Aberdeen City & Shire Hotels Association which over 40 members and associate members. 'This Industry Association has

Gary says, it's so important to attract, retain and enthuse visitors and local residents, raising the profile of the city with various initiatives to increase the number of visitors and keep them longer.' The buzz words are defiantly attract, retain, increase footfall & dwell time. Are you exhausted yet? Well, too bad, Gary is not done. In addition to being a Burgess of the City of Aberdeen who wears his badge with pride on his suit lapel, he is also a North East Committee Member of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry. Phew! It’s all a far cry from his youth when all he wanted to do was work as a chef in hotel kitchens. 'It didn’t help that I failed my cookery 'O' level but it didn’t stop me and I went on to run huge corporate catering at major sporting venues in the UK including Hampden Park, Murrayfield, even opening new football stadia. His final rallying call is that we all must talk up the City and Shire and return to better days ahead. And that’s his Christmas wish to Trend readers.
