Varicose veins? I am overjoyed with the results. All the unsightly veins have gone and I no longer feel self-conscious wearing shorts
P
atient experiences like this are now common after modern minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. Just a few years ago treatment was limited to surgery, support stockings and in-patient stays. Between 1 in 3 to 1 in 4 adults in the UK have varicose veins. They are more common with certain conditions and almost half of all pregnant women will develop varicose veins. Despite the fact that so many people have varicose veins they receive little in the way of medical attention due to many NHS Trusts now only treating the 10% of cases which would be regarded as medically significant i.e. skin changes and signs of chronic venous insufficiency. For many people the appearance of varicose veins or spider veins prevent them wearing shorts or swimming costumes, alternatively they may cause discomfort which is
troubling. Our aim is to provide the best care to all of our patients with venous problems. Mr. Stuart Suttie, Consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic says, ‘Varicose veins are amongst the most common reasons patients come to see me. We are able to treat varicose veins with minimally invasive techniques such as radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound guided injection of foam. These techniques have revolutionised the recovery from varicose vein treatment.’ The multi-disciplinary team at the Aberdeen Clinic is expert at helping patients select the optimal treatment for their varicose veins. Patients can then benefit from a walk-in-walk-out treatment delivered by a specialist consultant at the Aberdeen Clinic. As a result varicose vein problems can be a thing of the past after a simple cost effective out-patient procedure.

FROM THE
EDITOR W
elcome to another packed edition of Trend. Now, we’ll admit that we’re not really used to a full on summer in our corner of the world. Anything more than three consecutive days of sunshine counts as freak weather conditions! We’ve had an amazing July and the weather forecasters are promising sunshine throughout August and September. If they’re right, it may be a wee bit cooler, but let’s slather on the factor 50 and make the most of it. There are some great events on during August and September. Catch a show or two during the Northern Lights Festival, enjoy a laugh at the Comedy Festival, make the most of Aberdeen Restaurant Week, or head out to visit some of the region’s best designer craftspeople at NEOS. Take it easy in the garden, lie in the grass munching strawberries, or pack up the car and go for a family picnic in the hills or at the beach. Get out and explore. It doesn’t matter if it’s wandering round some of the shire’s picturesque villages or towns, exploring the grandeur of Aberdeenshire’s castles or just taking a stroll in the park. Make hay while the sun shines.

I feel it is essential that patients are fully aware of the risks and complications involved in facial aesthetics. These risks can be minimised by using accredited specialists in recognised healthcare facilities with a reputation for excellence.
T
aking the decision to have aesthetic treatment can be a big step with high expectations about the outcome. There will also be some uncertainty or anxiety about what is involved, what the risks are and what your appearance will be like afterwards. Our sought after consultants are very experienced each with a reputation for high quality clinical care. They will be able to explain the process and any potential risks, and more importantly, how these will be managed. Why do wrinkles and lines appear? Our faces can be wonderfully expressive as our numerous different facial muscles allow us to demonstrate a wide array of emotions. In our youth, the skin folds created by our facial muscles disappear almost instantly. Unfortunately, as the years pass by our skin loses some of its elasticity, meaning that the skin folds don’t disappear, but instead present themselves as unwanted lines and wrinkles. Our skin also contains a naturally occurring substance known as hyaluronic acid, but over time the level of this substance in our skin diminishes, such that the skin can lose its shape and volume.
L-R: Mr Kazi Rahman, Mr Akhtar Hussain, Mr Athanasios Athanassopoulos What Treatments are available? There are two main types of non-surgical treatments available to counteract these ageing effects. Muscle relaxing injections like Botox act as a nerve inhibitor, and when injected into a muscle it blocks the nerve impulses which cause the muscle to contract. When injected into specific facial muscles (namely those which cause the skin folds to develop) those muscles contract far less, and so the wrinkling effect is diminished. Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels, containing hyaluronic acid, which add volume to the skin, filling the depressed area to create a smoother, more youthful appearance. Why come to Albyn Hospital? If you are looking for a service that is fully registered and regulated and only allows experienced Consultants to practice then look no further than Albyn Hospital. Following our latest inspection by Healthcare Improvement Scotland we were awarded a number of ‘Excellent’ grades, giving you the assurance of quality care in safe clinical surroundings. Non-surgical Rhinoplasty is a very popular emerging trend that is non-invasive. It entails an injection of various fillers to correct mild to moderate abnormalities. Although not all noses are suitable for non-surgical rhinoplasty, this procedure can be a very efficient and cost effective alternative with minimal down time.

ndrew Scott Dental Care has a great reputation for both corrective and cosmetic dental treatments, such as Smile Design and implants. Now they have extended their services to include aesthetic fillers and muscle relaxants, so your face can look as good as your smile! Debbie Robertson, a fully qualified and experienced aesthetic technician and Senior Staff Nurse, has joined the practice to offer a range of aesthetic fillers and muscle relaxant treatments. Debbie works
We aim for a look that is better, fresher, more youthful version of yourself closely with her clients to provide a naturally enhanced look, using Juvederm or Botox. Treatment starts with a comprehensive consultation, to discuss the client’s expectations and medical history. Debbie has a particular interest in eye and brow muscle relaxing. Debbie explained, ‘Treatment takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, then it takes ten days or so for muscle relaxing injections to take effect and the results last up to 12-16 weeks.’ Debbie can also provide lip enhancement with fillers as well as other facial rejuvenation. Benefits can be seen immediately. Dermal fillers take a little longer and they’re effective for four to six months generally, although some people get a year between treatments.
They become increasingly effective in subsequent treatments. ‘We aim for a look that is a better, fresher, more youthful version of yourself. The client is at the heart of the process, guiding the desired results in the mirror. Both dermal fillers and muscle relaxing injections work well for men as well as women. Many men now have muscle relaxing injections before their weddings or to remove frown lines. ‘We offer a professional, confidential service that offers both good value and great, natural-looking facial enhancement.’ Andrew Scott Dental combines the best in dental technology with a friendly and stress-free approach in their luxurious modern clinic. Now that Debbie is working with Andrew Scott Dental Care, Andrew, Michelle, George and Rachel are giving their patients something extra to smile about. e all know we need to eat well and exercise to enjoy great health and well-being. Yet, what about eating right while exercising? How important is preand post- workout nutrition? Tuomas Lyons, one of the Personal Trainers at David Lloyd Aberdeen provides some pointers… Pre-exercise nutrition can make a big difference to performance. The aim of pre-exercise nutrition is to help maintain energy levels throughout the session, keep your body hydrated, speed up recovery post workout and help preserve muscle mass. Eat one well balanced meal 2-3 hours before your session, or 2-3 smaller meals 1-2 hours before your session. If you’re pushed for time, meal replacement shakes or bars are an option. Ideally you should eat
a mix of complex carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, pasta, rice and vegetables. Chicken, beef, fish, legumes and dairy are good protein choices, while oils, nuts and seeds are a great way to get your fat requirements. If you must eat just before your workout, opt for a smoothie or fruit with yoghurt. Post-workout nutrition should stimulate recovery, re-hydrate, promote muscle growth, and improve future workouts. Look to eat within an hour of working out. Simple and complex carbohydrates are important to replenish lost energy stores. A good quality

protein is necessary to help with repairing muscle and for growth of new muscle, while good quality fats are necessary to complete the body’s need for a full complement of nutrients. Calorie intake will depend on each individual and their goals. An easy guide would be to make 40% of your daily intake from carbohydrates, 30% from protein, 30% from fat and importantly you should aim for around 30 grams of fibre per day. Provided you eat regularly and healthily, before and after exercise then there is probably no need for anything more.

ycling is a great way for the whole family to get out into the open air. There are some wonderful cycling paths in the city; try the beach front or take the old railway path that runs from Duthie Park all the way to Cults under shady trees. If you haven’t cycled for years, head to any of the city’s bike shops, where you’ll find friendly, expert advice to help you choose the bike that suits the type of cycling you want to do and works best for your body and budget. Decide what type of terrain you want to cover, whether it’s off-road on the forest tracks, or something for pottering down to the local shops. Whatever your needs, leave some money in the budget for a good helmet and visibility aids, so other road users can see you.
It’s also worth checking if your employer offers a cycle to work scheme. Many of these offer considerable discounts on bikes, so if you’re looking for a commuting bike, it’s a great option. If you’re likely to abandon your fitness campaign after a couple of rides, then consider renting a bike of buying something second hand until you’re ready to splash out. Gumtree is also a great source of bargain road racing and mountain bikes when you’re ready for something more specialised. Or try Thainstone on Sundays for kids’ bikes that have been outgrown. If you’re keen to ride longer distances, want to race or just have a strange compulsion to wear neon Lycra from head to toe (we’re not judging), then join a local cycle club, who have organised rides and events throughout the year. There are around a dozen in Aberdeen city and shire, from Elgin to Stonehaven. You’ll find them all very friendly and welcoming. Try cyclegrampian.co.uk for details of your nearest club.

If the long hot spell in July has taught us anything, it’s that we need to pay attention to the condition of our hands and feet as much as our faces.
W
e may spend most of the year layered up and waddling about in our furry boots, but a hot summer means our hands and feet are on show. Hands and feet get some rough treatment, continually working and suffering from extremes of temperature, abrasion and, in the case of feet, often being squashed into footwear that doesn’t quite fit. Blisters, corns, rough skin and bunions cause discomfort in strappy heels, while constant chores can leave hands looking old and worn. Now’s the time to take action. Here are a few of our favourite tips for tip top hands and feet… Hands often look older than our faces, because we don’t remember to protect them from sun damage. Look for a hand cream that includes an SPF15 or higher, or just massage some sun cream into the skin. Water can be a stressor for the skin, so use rubber gloves when doing the dishes. Better yet, shove everything in
the dishwasher or get someone else to do the washing up. Use a good hand moisturiser three times a day to keep your skin youthful, soft and hydrated. Clarins’ Hand and Nail Treatment Cream is great for summer, while Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula protects even in the coldest winters. Avoid harsh products which can change the pH of your skin or strip out the natural oils. Go for gentle products and treat yourself to a professional manicure. This can help you grow stronger nails as well as making your hands look great. So what about feet? The best thing you can do is make sure your footwear fits perfectly. Up to 70% of us are wearing the wrong shoe size. Bunions, corns, ingrown toenails, blisters and rough skin can all be avoided if your shoes fit well. Put yourself in the hands of a professional. A good chiropodist can put a spring in your step for years to come. If you’d rather DIY, then foot experts Scholl have some brilliant remedies, from corn removers and skin softeners to a Smooth Express Pedi with diamond crystals!

SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE, SO BUILDING A CAPSULE WARDROBE OF QUALITY PIECES COULD BE THE WAY FORWARD.

The capsule wardrobe is a collection of around ten essential clothing items which never go out of fashion and can be enhanced by seasonal accessories to make the struggle of deciding what to wear non-existent. Sound good to us! HERE’S HOW TO DO IT:
© Matalan
idge
© Miss Selfr
Choose a colour scheme. Begin with one or two base colours which will go with a lot. Navy, black, camel or grey all work well. Trousers, bags and coats should be bought in the chosen shades, becoming your staple items which can be worn all year round in various combinations. Now decide on some accent colours to add some dimension to your look, one or two brighter colours which you feel suit your complexion and personality. These could be tops, scarfs, accessories and dresses and can be in complementary patterns like spots, florals or stripes.

Evaluate your body shape. Make informed choices here, as it is crucial that these items fit well and make you feel good. You should feel so comfortable that you want to wear it all year round. Confidence is key. Seeking professional styling may be beneficial if you are unsure what would flatter your specific body shape.

Check quality and don’t be hesitant to splash out. These items should last you a while and save you money and time in the long run. Pick clothing that’s made of a durable high quality fabric which will continue to look great for several seasons.

Yellow gold can be melted down and reused in the new design, while stones can be reset to make something just perfect.
Why not spoil yourself or someone else with bespoke jewellery from Lava? Jacqui is known for her design, creativity and the ability to make the most of your budget, while Duncan is recognised as one of Scotland’s best makers, with several pieces in royal collections.

Lava is taking part in NEOS this September, so some of the best emerging jewellers will be borrowing some space at Lava to show their latest creations. It’s a great chance to see some one-off pieces and discover more about the makers. Pop in between September 8-16 and you could pick up something rather special. This year we’ll have work from Marc Wood, Bruce Swanson, Sarah Leask and Nicole Ferguson.
Not just every shade of blue, but an entire rainbow of precious stones and coloured gems is available to suit your tastes and budget. Whether you’re looking for tiny tourmalines, amazing emeralds, deep red rubies or an impressive diamond to wow your intended, Lava can source a range of top quality stones direct from exclusive dealers for your approval.

Summer brings with it a host of weddings and other events that call for a more formal look. So what should you wear to look good and maintain a classically elegant appearance?
Kilt You can’t go wrong with a custom made kilt outfit, which will last for decades and never go out of style, unless your middle age spread defeats your kilt maker’s abilities.

Tuxedo
© Topman
The other options are a lounge suit or a tuxedo. Somehow almost everyone looks great in a tux. Look for a luxury fabric and a well cut fit. If you’re investing in something classic, look for a slim fit and have the suit altered to fit perfectly. It goes without saying that you should try a number of dinner suits on and take advice from someone you trust. Black is the only option here, and you’re aiming at Cary Grant or James Bond - suave, gentlemanly, but with just a hint of danger and concealed power.

Velvet © Next
© Next
As a somewhat louche alternative, you could opt for a velvet dinner jacket. These look great in rich darker tones of midnight blue, emerald or burgundy, but need to be in a really good heavy velvet, rather than the cheap shiny version. Again, you’re thinking Kingsman rather than Austin Powers.

Lounge suits can fit the bill, provided it’s clear that you’re making more of an effort than simply showing up in your office wear. This season, there are lots of chalky pastel suits, including some with the option of shorts. Let’s be clear - there is no excuse for wearing shorts suits unless you are under seven and unfeasibly posh. Grown men can’t pull the look off because it brings a huge conundrum of what socks and shoes to wear.

That leads us to the subject of novelty items in formal wear. Would James Bond wear novelty socks? No.

innies is excited to announce they now offer an enticing selection of timepieces from Tudor watches which is part of the Rolex watch company. The Swiss made watches offer the quality and dependability of the parent group but at a more accessible price point (prices range from £1,220 - £4,500). Tudor watches are truly exceptional and they are designed to withstand the most extreme weather conditions and are made for those with a keen sense of adventure. We are particularly in love with Tudor’s Black Bay collection, which is a subtle blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary watchmaking. Black Bay watches are waterproof to 200 metres and come in steel, fabric or leather straps. For the girls, the ‘Glamour Date’ and ‘Clair De Rose’ will add style to any occasion.

F
innies, the only stockist of Bell & Ross watches in the North-east, is pleased to have a rather different kind of concept watch in store which is bound to turn a few heads! Since its inception, Bell & Ross has had concept watches that are now an integral part of its DNA. BR 01 ‘Skull’, launched in 2009, was one of the first to ride the wave of the trend for Skull watches. Fast forward nearly 10 years later and Bell & Ross is going one step further with a new Skull watch, this time equipped with an automaton movement. It includes a surprise that will make you laugh: the lower jaw moves and the skull grins back at you! There are only 500 of these worldwide, all individually numbered and Finnies is thrilled to have availability of these watches. We love the quality, the style and the fun aspect of this watch and we hope you will too!

MEET CRAIG SOMERS, HEAD CHEF AT ONE OF THE CITY’S BEST LOVED RESTAURANTS, THE SILVER DARLING
‘At the start of the year, I came back to The Silver Darling to lead the kitchen team which was a real homecoming moment for me as this is where I got my start in the industry, and in fact, met my now wife. ‘Back when I was twenty, I was a commis chef here and starting out my career so I have always loved the restaurant. ‘Before returning, I was head chef at The Tolbooth in Stonehaven which taught me valuable skills but to return as head chef is a fantastic personal achievement. ‘When I’m not in the kitchen, you’ll find me walking in the hills and enjoying the countryside.

It’s a great way to unwind from the pace of a busy kitchen. ‘At The Silver Darling, our focus is on fresh and seasonal produce with a mix of seafood dishes and meat options to complement the new surroundings of the recent refurbishment. ‘We are lucky to be in the perfect location to get the best fish produce which is delivered daily to our kitchens. For example, our fresh crab comes direct from the boats in Gourdon. ‘I like to keep the dishes simple but I will add my twist with the accompaniments and get a lot of inspiration from the cookery books from leading restaurants. ‘Seasonality is key for us and we tend to change the menu every three to four months which allows us to get creative with seasonal produce which is great for our customers.
with hazelnut vinaigrette, pickled apples & pea shoots INGREDIENTS: (Serves 4)
16 medium scallops 50g washed pea shoots 1 Granny Smith apple 1 lemon (juiced) 85g roasted hazelnuts 60g olive oil 10g sherry vinegar
METHOD Slice the apple, discarding the core and chop into strips, mix with half of the lemon juice and leave to pickle for at least an hour. Blitz the hazelnuts in a food processor until finely chopped but not too powdery or chop by hand. Mix this with the oil, the other half of the lemon juice and the vinegar and season. When ready to cook, place a large non-stick frying pan on a medium to high heat for a couple of minutes, coat the scallops with some vegetable oil and season well. Place scallops flat side down into the pan and sear until lightly caramelised (about 1.5 to 2 minutes) turn over the scallops and lower the heat slightly and cook for the same length of time on the other side. Place the scallops on kitchen roll to absorb excess oil. Place four scallops on each plate, top with the apples, pea shoots and hazelnut vinaigrette.

Trend rounds up some Latin American flavours
W
ith Peruvian cuisine being this year’s hot gastronomic trend and a fair sprinkling of Mexican, Brazilian and South American restaurants cropping up in the city over the past couple of years, we decided to sample the delights South of the border…
We headed for Muchacho on a weekday evening, and at 5pm the aromas leaving the shop were very appetising. The shop is mainly takeaway, but there is a window bench with high stools if your hunger is too great. You create your own dish, with the usual choices of burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, nachos and salad, along with tacos and a naked burrito (just the fillings and accompaniments). I chose Pork Carnitas as my main filling, which was as juicy and tender as advertised, and paired it with salsa verde and guacamole – the usual suspects of rice and beans are included in the burrito. My husband had the Guerrero Beef and the chipotle salsa but reckoned he could have coped with the ‘Punch in the Face’ salsa which boasts four chillis on the blackboard and is ‘for the hot heads’. Muchachos is bright, clean and friendly and also sells Mexican Jarritos, bottled fizzy drinks straight from the mother country. muchacho.co.uk

Fresh Mex Fresh Mex duo Robbie Moult and Calum Wright started as a farmers’ market pop-up in 2015, and have very recently opened a restaurant of their own on Schoolhill, but it was to their food residency at the Adams and Hawthorn Sports Bar on Holburn Street that we headed on a Sunday night. The Adams is a bright and comfortable lounge with a pub feel and a wall of sport, perfect for a feed and catch up with the weekend’s sporting events. We ordered a nachos, a rice bowl and a burrito to sit in, with marinated chicken on the first two, and half and half mixed beans and beef & chorizo chilli on the burrito. We all declared the food well-cooked and really tasty, and great value for money too. There is a veggie option of smoky BBQ pulled jackfruit, as well loads of burger choices and a Cali-Burrito, a San Diego phenomenon which replaces the rice with French fries! freshmex.co.uk
Revolucion de Cuba Final stop on our search for Latin flavours was Revolucion de Cuba, in the Academy Shopping Centre Courtyard just off Belmont Street. There’s a laid back vibe during the day and more of a party atmosphere in the evenings. Hemingway with a mirror ball may seem strange, but it works. The décor is an eclectic take on a shady Havana bar and cantina, in wood, tile and mosaic. The appetising menu isn’t strictly Cuban, but draws on influences from across South America, even straying across to Cyprus for fusion tapas like their wonderful little Halloumi Tacos. We sampled a robust plate of chorizo in a red wine and honey sauce and patatas bravas perfectly set off with a spicy tomato sauce and a garlicky aioli. It may not be painstakingly authentic, but everything tasted great! Revolucion de Cuba is a great choice for vegetarians in search of something different, as well as carnivores. The main course mushroom, bean and spinach burrito proved to be the cheesiest of comfort foods, while my co-reviewer demolished his excellent Caribbean Chicken Curry, singling out the balance of flavours and the zesty rice for special praise. There’s a great cocktail menu, with alcohol-free versions for those who are driving. The Virgin Zombie Killer came with enough fruit on top to qualify as dessert. Viva la Revolucion! revoluciondecuba.com

TALL EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR & OTTOMAN BLACK (CHARLES & RAY EAMES)
The E-Type Jaguar, the Burberry trench and the Eames Lounger all show that classic design is worth investing in, whether it’s cars, clothes or furniture.
Y
ou may have a higher outlay, but design classics are built to last and remain in style for decades. It’s a compelling combination of good looks, durability and perfect functionality. A solid hardwood floor may seem ruinously expensive, but it’ll age well and still look great after fifty years; the odd accident simply adds character. Similarly, choosing a design classic sets your interiors above fashion fads and takes you into the realm of effortless style. To stay current, all you need is a lick of paint and a few new cushions every now and then.
‘Whether it’s a Scandinavian modernist sideboard, or a sofa like the Togo, design classics adapt to changing trends and still stay relevant. Togo for example has been in continuous production since 1973, as at home now in a chilled out TV room or family kitchen diner as it was in a hip and trendy lounge in the 70s. Design classics move with the times rather than standing still’, explained Keith Dargie of Dargie Design. Look for clean lines, lasting comfort and style that lasts the test of time and design that makes your heart leap every time you see it.

T
he definition of art is : ‘The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power’ and it belongs in the garden as much as it does anywhere else. In the same way that we adorn our living space with sculptures, paintings etc., art has a place in the garden too and it doesn’t have to be predictable. The secret is not to be daunted, allow it to be what you want it to be whether the subject is serious or humorous, it will have it’s place. It doesn’t have to be sculpture either, it can
be an arch positioned in the right place to create interest and intrigue or a planter filled with beautiful plants, a water feature or topiary and of course, it can be sculpture or statues too.
Gloria, Illona Morrice illona-sculptures.co.uk
One of my clients has a passion for art in the garden. In talking with them on this subject, they outlined that they don’t spend hours labouring over which piece goes where nor do they necessarily buy a piece for a specific location in the garden. Instead they buy what they love or makes them smile and then position it where they can see it or it feels most natural. I think the message is, if you simply enjoy whatever it is you choose, you will probably find others do too.

Raven Spirits take flight with gin launch success
I
t may have only been a few months since the launch of Raven Gin, but according to gin connoisseurs, the north-east brothers behind the brand have undoubtedly added to the rich variety of Aberdeenshire’s small batch gins. Callum and Peter Sim successfully launched their highly anticipated products (a signature Thought and Memory expression and a limited release Founder’s Edition) at an exclusive event last month and the brand has already gone from strength to strength. To the venture, Callum brings his business experience of over two decades as a lawyer - as well a compelling passion for Scottish spirits he has long shared with his brother. Peter has worked within the hospitality industry for over 30 years, having been instrumental in setting up whisky and gin bars at several high-end establishments. Under his independent business, Peaty Nose Ltd. - he organises tastings and is the founder of local Gin Clubs and was also one of the organisers of this year’s Gin Festival: North East. Callum commented, ‘Peter’s expertise, alongside my business experience, have been a great pairing. Both products have been a year in the making, but I wasn’t prepared to launch anything that wasn’t absolutely perfect. We wanted a distinctive taste journey, and we know from feedback, that that’s what we’ve achieved. ‘For us, it’s about authenticity and quality. No gimmicks, just a damn fine dram that I am proud to put my name to.’

As the summer wedding season comes to an end, we are looking forward to the next holiday celebration, Halloween. But did you know that weddings and Halloween are closely linked?
S
ome traditional customs we follow on All Hallows Eve are thought to predict the identity of a future spouse! If you didn’t use your apples for dooking, peel the skin in one long strip and throw it over your shoulder. The peel is believed to land in the shape of the first letter of your future spouse’s name. If this isn’t your thing, unmarried women should sit in a darkened room and gaze in to the mirror on October 31st and their future husband’s face will appear in the mirror…. Halloween isn’t just for guising children. We love to design and dress venues in cobwebbed chandeliers, spiders and carved neeps creating spooktacular nights to remember. If you are already agreed on ‘till death do us part’ consider black, orange and purple for your wedding theme for a bewitching finish! In any event, we’re here for you. Happy Halloween!

Divorce and Family Law Team is firmly established as one of the leading family law practices in Scotland.
T
urcan Connell’s Divorce and Family Law team has a wealth of experience, both legal and from a human perspective, which justifies their top band rating in family law, allowing them to advise and support their clients through what can be very challenging experiences. The team, which boasts two dual qualified solicitors in Scottish and English law, two accredited specialists in family law, one accredited specialist in child law and a solicitor advocate, provides the full range of services that might be required at any stage of a relationship from the moment a couple choose to set up home together, to providing adoption and surrogacy advice, advising on the financial consequences of the breakdown of a relationship and the care arrangements for any children.
The team, headed up by Gillian Crandles, cover cases which are extremely wide-ranging both in scope, complexity and which often cross international borders. The vast majority of divorce and family law cases are resolved by negotiation or by using alternative methods of dispute resolution. However, where settlement cannot be achieved and litigation becomes unavoidable, Turcan Connell’s wealth of experience lends itself to adopting as robust an approach as is required as they guide their clients through the court process, whether in the local Sheriff Court or in the Court of Session in Edinburgh. Take a few days this autumn to try an adventure break. Its a great way of experiencing new surroundings while challenging yourself to leave both your daily routine and comfort zone well behind.
T
he level of adventure is up to you. You could push yourself with an intensive and challenging option, equal parts exhaustion and exhilaration, or opt for a gentler, family-friendly break that suits all ages and fitness levels. If you don’t normally walk further than the car, it may be best to start with bagging a Munro or two rather than heading straight for the Everest Base Camp! Exodus Travel are one of the country’s oldest specialist tour organisers, specialising in off the beaten track adventures such as snow shoe trekking in Finland, wildlife walking to get up close to gorillas in Rwanda, spotting the elusive snow leopard in the Himalayas or discovering whether bears really do poo in the woods in Romania.
If warm weather adventures appeal more, Exodus also offer cycling in Madagascar, or you can spend 15 days pretending to be Jeremy Clarkson on a 4WD desert safari through Namibia. If you’re more Top Gun than Top Gear and you have a month to spare, you could learn to fly in Cyprus, saving around 40% on UK prices. There are similar intensive courses in Florida and the German and Austrian Alps.

Diving makes another great adventure, particularly if you choose a warm-water destination with as many fascinating sights onshore as offshore. Consider Cuba, which combines a lively nightlife, classic cars on every street, great food and some of the most pristine dive sites in the Caribbean. If you’re feeling very adventurous, you can dive in a shark cage or go snorkelling alongside saltwater crocodiles. Or maybe just read a Hemingway adventure story while sipping on a rum-based cocktail by the pool. If the weather holds, there’s plenty of adventure on offer closer to home, too. Head for Fort William or Lochaber on the west coast, which both offer a huge variety of outdoor activities. Fort William has Ben Nevis of course, but also markets itself as the Outdoor Capital of Scotland. It’s brilliant for mountain biking, holding the UCI World Championships each June. There are plenty of less pant-wettingly terrifying tracks too, thankfully. Head for the Nevis Range ski, snowboard and mountain biking centre on Aonach Mor. A gondola takes visitors 2,000 feet up the mountain for amazing views and access to the ski slopes.
ADVERTISEMENTS TRAVEL | 79
If mountaineering appeals, Fort William’s Caspar McKeever Mountaineering specialises in Skye Cuillin guiding and Scottish winter mountaineering and climbing. They can provide a professional guide to help you conquer new heights, or teach new skills. Try Llama Trekking at Ecocamp Glenshee, leading the gentle animals on a short trek. You may come home with ambitions to buy a llama or two of your own. Lochaber makes a great base for an adventure weekend in autumn, particularly because the midges will have gone. You can try sea kayaking or other water sports, head to the incredible beach at Sanna Bay, or try indoor climbing on the ice wall at Kinlochleven Ice Factory. You can also have a go on their aerial assault course. For a less bruising adventure, try Loch Shiel Cruises. The friendly trip is packed with interesting Jacobite tales and birdspotting opportunities in a magnificent wilderness area. Go on, spice up your life with a bit of adventure this autumn.

S
eptember sees the return of True North, the music festival in the heart of the city. This year’s event runs from 20-23 September and offers the chance to see some amazing musicians and great bands. Better yet, you can do so without the hassle of heading to a field in the middle of nowhere, eating dubious lentil burgers, wandering for hours trying to find your tent, or wallowing through puddles of mud. We’re not even going to think about festival portaloos! Instead, True North brings a comprehensive selection of headline performances right into the heart of Aberdeen. Much more civilised! Standout gigs include headliners The Magic Numbers, Camille O’Sullivan’s celebration of David Bowie, and perennial Aberdeen favourites Mogwai, with
their self-described musical equivalent of William Blake’s divine angel visions and Francis Bacon’s horror paintings. Fellow Glaswegians Glasvegas make their debut True North appearance, while singersongwriters Tracyanne Campbell and Danny Coughlan offer a more pared back show. Colin MacIntyre, better known as the Mull Historical Society, headlines on 22 September. There’s also a selection of free Fringe concerts across the city, mainly in small, intimate venues. Kids will enjoy their own gig, while the masterclass programme and discussion sessions give the chance to meet and learn from some of the leading festival performers. To buy tickets and see the full programme of events, head to truenorthfestival.co.uk.

Swimming lessons were once such a dreaded part of P.E. that many of us fervently hoped for a verruca simply to avoid getting in the pool.
Yet swimming is one of the best all round forms of exercise, combining a full-body workout with great fitness benefits, fun and very little chance of injury since the body is fully supported. Add in improved flexibility, a break away from our allconsuming phones and enhanced body confidence and self-esteem, and it’s clear that learning to swim can set your child on the path of fitness and wellbeing for life. It can also save lives, so it makes sense to teach children to swim and to enjoy being in the water when they are very young.
If you don’t have the confidence to teach your children yourself, then there are plenty of options around the city and shire. It’s best to check out the timetable at your local pool and book a session or two before signing up for a block of structured lessons. If your child turns out to be a natural water baby, then consider signing them up with a local swimming club to develop their skills and competitive streak. You can find a list of clubs at scottishswimming.com.

N
ow some schools no longer offer lessons and many parents either can’t swim themselves, or aren’t sure how to teach their children to understand water safety and become strong, confident swimmers. That’s why more than half of primary school children can’t swim a length of a pool by themselves.

The Wonderful World of
M
eet husband and wife Alan and Julie McIntosh, who have recently opened their working studios to the public at Mill of Hirn near Banchory… Wood and Wool make a range of gorgeous interior pieces that would grace any home. Alan makes bespoke furniture which combines fabulous quality with robust design, unusual accents and brings out the beauty of the wood. Multi-talented Julie concentrates on designing and making unique finishing touches, whether it’s soft furnishings, ceramics or paintings. Julie explained how Wood and Wool came into being, ‘We both enjoy creating things for our home. Having been quietly pursuing this as a hobby for a couple of years and acquiring a large range of machinery along the way, we decided that maybe people might want to buy something they can’t get in any shop. ‘Wood and Wool allows us to showcase our ideas and share them with other people. There’s always something new to see whenever you visit. We want to be a small enterprise, making everything by ourselves. It’s never going to be about projecting sales figures and turnover, that’s for sure!’
My Dad was a fantastic carver, turner and furniture maker, so he influenced me enormously.
Alan’s furniture making takes inspiration from the individual qualities of his material. ‘I’ve always loved really old trees with lots of character. Each part of the same tree can be so different in character. When you first cut it and see all the grain and you know you are the first to ever see it. It’s always a great moment at the start of a new project. ‘My Dad was a fantastic carver, turner and furniture maker, so he influenced me enormously. Some of the things he has made are truly breathtaking. He never sold anything just gave it to friends and family. So really what I am saying is this is all his fault! ‘The wood helps me decide what I’m going to make. I try to save the most diseased parts of a tree which can give really special features I love so much. Once the wood is kiln-dried, I get an image in my head that various combinations of wood, steel, glass, maybe stone will work together. I let it evolve naturally. I love making tables, mirrors, lamp bases, clocks, and coat hooks.
Whatever I make, there will never be another exactly the same.’ Julie’s passion is to create beautiful things. She continued, ‘I use a variety of mediums allowing me the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. What inspires me? The colours and materials I use take me on a journey. I might have a rough idea to start with, but I enjoy the freedom to change my mind. I am always learning. It’s exciting to explore the endless possibilities the digital world can offer, combining old with new techniques is fascinating! ‘For us, the saying ‘Two heads are better than one’, is quite often true. We bounce ideas off each other. We have very similar tastes which obviously helps. We both take commissions and can make pieces to suit individual requirements and taste. ‘At the Mill Studio we have a small gallery where you can view samples of our work and also purchase. You may see a design or an idea that you like but it may not be the correct size or colourway - we can adapt this to suit the customer’s own home.’ The Mill Studio, Mill of Hirn, Banchory, AB31 5QS Open: Thur, Fri & Sun 1 - 4pm or by appointment wood-and-wool.co.uk

till basking in the glow of a summons to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh in July to receive the insignia of OBE from Her Majesty the Queen is Aberdeen business woman Alison Sellar whose company, activpayroll, has spread like wildfire to more than 140 countries in the past 16 years. However, the envelope containing news of the honour being given to the former Aberdeen Grammar School pupil could easily have landed up in the bucket.
Australia, and are now well established in places like Singapore. Finding good people has been the key to success and our philosophy has been that we cannot afford to over-promise and under-deliver.’
Alison is not alone in dreading the sight of brown envelopes arriving in the post and said: ‘To be honest, I thought it was a parking ticket I was getting so I was thrilled to discover otherwise.’ She is proud of receiving the accolade for services to business in Scotland and abroad but is quick to acknowledge members of the team who sort out the payroll for thousands of people worldwide.

Oh, and along the way, she is mum to Thomas and Danielle and, by the way, is an ardent fundraiser for charities, cycling hundreds of miles for good causes such as the Maggie’s cancer centre in Aberdeen. Yorkshire in August and India in November are next on the agenda.
At the helm with her are husband Euan, who is chief operating officer, business services director Sian Odgers and global tax director Graham McKechnie. ‘We are so fortunate to have great staff who fly the flag for us abroad,’ Alison added. ‘We started in 2001 with just one client in the oil and gas sector of the North Sea but by 2005 we had opened our first overseas office in Perth, Western
For obvious reasons of client confidentiality, she has to decline naming any of the companies activpayroll serves, but she did let slip a juicy titbit that one is a Formula One racing outfit.
It’s a full-on life for this 48-year-old who said at school she wanted to be a ski instructor. ‘I am humbled to have received my OBE from the Queen” she added, ‘but this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my husband Euan, my family and the entire team at activpayroll.”
Finding good people has been the key to success
