If they’re right, it may be a wee bit cooler, but let’s slather on the factor 50 and make the most of it. There are some great events on during August and September. Catch a show or two during the Northern Lights Festival, enjoy a laugh at the Comedy Festival, make the most of Aberdeen Restaurant Week, or head out to visit some of the region’s best designer craftspeople at NEOS. Take it easy in the garden, lie in the grass munching strawberries, or pack up the car and go for a family picnic in the hills or at the beach. Get out and explore. It doesn’t matter if it’s wandering round some of the shire’s picturesque villages or towns, exploring the grandeur of Aberdeenshire’s castles or just taking a stroll in the park. In our youth, the skin folds created by our facial muscles disappear almost instantly. Unfortunately, as the years pass by our skin loses some of its elasticity, meaning that the skin folds donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappear, but instead present themselves as unwanted lines and wrinkles. Our skin also contains a naturally occurring substance known as hyaluronic acid, but over time the level of this substance in our skin diminishes, such that the skin can lose its shape and volume.

Muscle relaxing injections like Botox act as a nerve inhibitor, and when injected into a muscle it blocks the nerve impulses which cause the muscle to contract. When injected into specific facial muscles (namely those which cause the skin folds to develop) those muscles contract far less, and so the wrinkling effect is diminished. Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels, containing hyaluronic acid, which add volume to the skin, filling the depressed area to create a smoother, more youthful appearance. e all know we need to eat well and exercise to enjoy great health and well-being. Yet, what about eating right while exercising? How important is preand post- workout nutrition? The aim of pre-exercise nutrition is to help maintain energy levels throughout the session, keep your body hydrated, speed up recovery post workout and help preserve muscle mass. a mix of complex carbohydrates such as whole grain breads, pasta, rice and vegetables. Chicken, beef, fish, legumes and dairy are good protein choices, while oils, nuts and seeds are a great way to get your fat requirements. If you must eat just before your workout, opt for a smoothie or fruit with yoghurt. Post-workout nutrition should stimulate recovery, re-hydrate, promote muscle growth, and improve future workouts. Look to eat within an hour of working out. Simple and complex carbohydrates are important to replenish lost energy stores. A good quality

protein is necessary to help with repairing muscle and for growth of new muscle, while good quality fats are necessary to complete the body’s need for a full complement of nutrients. Calorie intake will depend on each individual and their goals. An easy guide would be to make 40% of your daily intake from carbohydrates, 30% from protein, 30% from fat and importantly you should aim for around 30 grams of fibre per day. Provided you eat regularly and healthily, before and after exercise then there is probably no need for anything more.

There are some wonderful cycling paths in the city; try the beach front or take the old railway path that runs from Duthie Park all the way to Cults under shady trees. If you haven’t cycled for years, head to any of the city’s bike shops, where you’ll find friendly, expert advice to help you choose the bike that suits the type of cycling you want to do and works best for your body and budget. Decide what type of terrain you want to cover, whether it’s off-road on the forest tracks, or something for pottering down to the local shops. Whatever your needs, leave some money in the budget for a good helmet and visibility aids, so other road users can see you.

It’s also worth checking if your employer offers a cycle to work scheme. Many of these offer considerable discounts on bikes, so if you’re looking for a commuting bike, it’s a great option. If you’re likely to abandon your fitness campaign after a couple of rides, then consider renting a bike of buying something second hand until you’re ready to splash out. Gumtree is also a great source of bargain road racing and mountain bikes when you’re ready for something more specialised. Or try Thainstone on Sundays for kids’ bikes that have been outgrown. If the long hot spell in July has taught us anything, it’s that we need to pay attention to the condition of our hands and feet as much as our faces.

e may spend most of the year layered up and waddling about in our furry boots, but a hot summer means our hands and feet are on show. Hands and feet get some rough treatment, continually working and suffering from extremes of temperature, abrasion and, in the case of feet, often being squashed into footwear that doesn’t quite fit. Blisters, corns, rough skin and bunions cause discomfort in strappy heels, while constant chores can leave hands looking old and worn. Now’s the time to take action. Here are a few of our favourite tips for tip top hands and feet… Hands often look older than our faces, because we don’t remember to protect them from sun damage. Look for a hand cream that includes an SPF15 or higher, or just massage some sun cream into the skin. Water can be a stressor for the skin, so use rubber gloves when doing the dishes. Better yet, shove everything in

the dishwasher or get someone else to do the washing up. Use a good hand moisturiser three times a day to keep your skin youthful, soft and hydrated. Choose a colour scheme. Begin with one or two base colours which will go with a lot. Navy, black, camel or grey all work well. Trousers, bags and coats should be bought in the chosen shades, becoming your staple items which can be worn all year round in various combinations. Now decide on some accent colours to add some dimension to your look, one or two brighter colours which you feel suit your complexion and personality. These could be tops, scarfs, accessories and dresses and can be in complementary patterns like spots, florals or stripes.

Evaluate your body shape. Make informed choices here, as it is crucial that these items fit well and make you feel good. You should feel so comfortable that you want to wear it all year round. Confidence is key. Seeking professional styling may be beneficial if you are unsure what would flatter your specific body shape.

Black is the only option here, and you’re aiming at Cary Grant or James Bond - suave, gentlemanly, but with just a hint of danger and concealed power.

As a somewhat louche alternative, you could opt for a velvet dinner jacket. These look great in rich darker tones of midnight blue, emerald or burgundy, but need to be in a really good heavy velvet, rather than the cheap shiny version. Again, you’re thinking Kingsman rather than Austin Powers.

Lounge suits can fit the bill, provided it’s clear that you’re making more of an effort than simply showing up in your office wear. This season, there are lots of chalky pastel suits, including some with the option of shorts. Let’s be clear - there is no excuse for wearing shorts suits unless you are under seven and unfeasibly posh. Grown men can’t pull the look off because it brings a huge conundrum of what socks and shoes to wear.

‘At the start of the year, I came back to The Silver Darling to lead the kitchen team which was a real homecoming moment for me as this is where I got my start in the industry, and in fact, met my now wife. ‘Back when I was twenty, I was a commis chef here and starting out my career so I have always loved the restaurant. ‘Before returning, I was head chef at The Tolbooth in Stonehaven which taught me valuable skills but to return as head chef is a fantastic personal achievement. ‘When I’m not in the kitchen, you’ll find me walking in the hills and enjoying the countryside.

It’s a great way to unwind from the pace of a busy kitchen. ‘At The Silver Darling, our focus is on fresh and seasonal produce with a mix of seafood dishes and meat options to complement the new surroundings of the recent refurbishment. ‘We are lucky to be in the perfect location to get the best fish produce which is delivered daily to our kitchens. For example, our fresh crab comes direct from the boats in Gourdon. ‘I like to keep the dishes simple but I will add my twist with the accompaniments and get a lot of inspiration from the cookery books from leading restaurants. ‘Seasonality is key for us and we tend to change the menu every three to four months which allows us to get creative with seasonal produce which is great for our customers.

with hazelnut vinaigrette, pickled apples & pea shoots INGREDIENTS: (Serves 4)

16 medium scallops 50g washed pea shoots 1 Granny Smith apple 1 lemon (juiced) 85g roasted hazelnuts 60g olive oil 10g sherry vinegar

METHOD Slice the apple, discarding the core and chop into strips, mix with half of the lemon juice and leave to pickle for at least an hour. Blitz the hazelnuts in a food processor until finely chopped but not too powdery or chop by hand. Mix this with the oil, the other half of the lemon juice and the vinegar and season. When ready to cook, place a large non-stick frying pan on a medium to high heat for a couple of minutes, coat the scallops with some vegetable oil and season well. Place scallops flat side down into the pan and sear until lightly caramelised (about 1.5 to 2 minutes) turn over the scallops and lower the heat slightly and cook for the same length of time on the other side. Place the scallops on kitchen roll to absorb excess oil. Place four scallops on each plate, top with the apples, pea shoots and hazelnut vinaigrette.

ith Peruvian cuisine being this year’s hot gastronomic trend and a fair sprinkling of Mexican, Brazilian and South American restaurants cropping up in the city over the past couple of years, we decided to sample the delights South of the border…

We headed for Muchacho on a weekday evening, and at 5pm the aromas leaving the shop were very appetising. The shop is mainly takeaway, but there is a window bench with high stools if your hunger is too great. You create your own dish, with the usual choices of burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, nachos and salad, along with tacos and a naked burrito (just the fillings and accompaniments). I chose Pork Carnitas as my main filling, which was as juicy and tender as advertised, and paired it with salsa verde and guacamole – the usual suspects of rice and beans are included in the burrito. My husband had the Guerrero Beef and the chipotle salsa but reckoned he could have coped with the ‘Punch in the Face’ salsa which boasts four chillis on the blackboard and is ‘for the hot heads’. Fresh Mex Fresh Mex duo Robbie Moult and Calum Wright started as a farmers’ market pop-up in 2015, and have very recently opened a restaurant of their own on Schoolhill, but it was to their food residency at the Adams and Hawthorn Sports Bar on Holburn Street that we headed on a Sunday night. The Adams is a bright and comfortable lounge with a pub feel and a wall of sport, perfect for a feed and catch up with the weekend’s sporting events. We ordered a nachos, a rice bowl and a burrito to sit in, with marinated chicken on the first two, and half and half mixed beans and beef & chorizo chilli on the burrito. We all declared the food well-cooked and really tasty, and great value for money too. There is a veggie option of smoky BBQ pulled jackfruit, as well loads of burger choices and a Cali-Burrito, a San Diego phenomenon which replaces the rice with French fries! freshmex.co.uk

Revolucion de Cuba Final stop on our search for Latin flavours was Revolucion de Cuba, in the Academy Shopping Centre Courtyard just off Belmont Street. There’s a laid back vibe during the day and more of a party atmosphere in the evenings. Hemingway with a mirror ball may seem strange, but it works. The décor is an eclectic take on a shady Havana bar and cantina, in wood, tile and mosaic. The appetising menu isn’t strictly Cuban, but draws on influences from across South America, even straying across to Cyprus for fusion tapas like their wonderful little Halloumi Tacos. We sampled a robust plate of chorizo in a red wine and honey sauce and patatas bravas perfectly set off with a spicy tomato sauce and a garlicky aioli. It may not be painstakingly authentic, but everything tasted great! Revolucion de Cuba is a great choice for vegetarians in search of something different, as well as carnivores. The main course mushroom, bean and spinach burrito proved to be the cheesiest of comfort foods, while my co-reviewer demolished his excellent Caribbean Chicken Curry, singling out the balance of flavours and the zesty rice for special praise. There’s a great cocktail menu, with alcohol-free versions for those who are driving. The Virgin Zombie Killer came with enough fruit on top to qualify as dessert. he definition of art is : ‘The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power’ and it belongs in the garden as much as it does anywhere else. In the same way that we adorn our living space with sculptures, paintings etc., art has a place in the garden too and it doesn’t have to be predictable. The secret is not to be daunted, allow it to be what you want it to be whether the subject is serious or humorous, it will have it’s place. It doesn’t have to be sculpture either, it can

be an arch positioned in the right place to create interest and intrigue or a planter filled with beautiful plants, a water feature or topiary and of course, it can be sculpture or statues too.

One of my clients has a passion for art in the garden. In talking with them on this subject, they outlined that they don’t spend hours labouring over which piece goes where nor do they necessarily buy a piece for a specific location in the garden. Instead they buy what they love or makes them smile and then position it where they can see it or it feels most natural. I think the message is, if you simply enjoy whatever it is you choose, you will probably find others do too.

Four firefighters from Central Fire Station in Aberdeen are running the New York Marathon for two causes close to their hearts.

Take a few days this autumn to try an adventure break. Its a great way of experiencing new surroundings while challenging yourself to leave both your daily routine and comfort zone well behind.

he level of adventure is up to you. You could push yourself with an intensive and challenging option, equal parts exhaustion and exhilaration, or opt for a gentler, family-friendly break that suits all ages and fitness levels. If you don’t normally walk further than the car, it may be best to start with bagging a Munro or two rather than heading straight for the Everest Base Camp! Exodus Travel are one of the country’s oldest specialist tour organisers, specialising in off the beaten track adventures such as snow shoe trekking in Finland, wildlife walking to get up close to gorillas in Rwanda, spotting the elusive snow leopard in the Himalayas or discovering whether bears really do poo in the woods in Romania.

Diving makes another great adventure, particularly if you choose a warm-water destination with as many fascinating sights onshore as offshore. There are plenty of less pant-wettingly terrifying tracks too, thankfully. Head for the Nevis Range ski, snowboard and mountain biking centre on Aonach Mor. A gondola takes visitors 2,000 feet up the mountain for amazing views and access to the ski slopes.

eptember sees the return of True North, the music festival in the heart of the city. This year’s event runs from 20-23 September and offers the chance to see some amazing musicians and great bands. Better yet, you can do so without the hassle of heading to a field in the middle of nowhere, eating dubious lentil burgers, wandering for hours trying to find your tent, or wallowing through puddles of mud. We’re not even going to think about festival portaloos! Instead, True North brings a comprehensive selection of headline performances right into the heart of Aberdeen. Much more civilised! Swimming lessons were once such a dreaded part of P.E. that many of us fervently hoped for a verruca simply to avoid getting in the pool.

Yet swimming is one of the best all round forms of exercise, combining a full-body workout with great fitness benefits, fun and very little chance of injury since the body is fully supported. Add in improved flexibility, a break away from our allconsuming phones and enhanced body confidence and self-esteem, and it’s clear that learning to swim can set your child on the path of fitness and wellbeing for life. It can also save lives, so it makes sense to teach children to swim and to enjoy being in the water when they are very young.

If you don’t have the confidence to teach your children yourself, then there are plenty of options around the city and shire. It’s best to check out the timetable at your local pool and book a session or two before signing up for a block of structured lessons. If your child turns out to be a natural water baby, then consider signing them up with a local swimming club to develop their skills and competitive streak. eet husband and wife Alan and Julie McIntosh, who have recently opened their working studios to the public at Mill of Hirn near Banchory… Wood and Wool make a range of gorgeous interior pieces that would grace any home. Alan makes bespoke furniture which combines fabulous quality with robust design, unusual accents and brings out the beauty of the wood. Multi-talented Julie concentrates on designing and making unique finishing touches, whether it’s soft furnishings, ceramics or paintings. Julie explained how Wood and Wool came into being, ‘We both enjoy creating things for our home. Having been quietly pursuing this as a hobby for a couple of years and acquiring a large range of machinery along the way, we decided that maybe people might want to buy something they can’t get in any shop. ‘Wood and Wool allows us to showcase our ideas and share them with other people. There’s always something new to see whenever you visit. We want to be a small enterprise, making everything by ourselves. It’s never going to be about projecting sales figures and turnover, that’s for sure!’

My Dad was a fantastic carver, turner and furniture maker, so he influenced me enormously.

Alan’s furniture making takes inspiration from the individual qualities of his material. ‘I’ve always loved really old trees with lots of character. Each part of the same tree can be so different in character. When you first cut it and see all the grain and you know you are the first to ever see it. It’s always a great moment at the start of a new project. ‘My Dad was a fantastic carver, turner and furniture maker, so he influenced me enormously. Some of the things he has made are truly breathtaking. He never sold anything just gave it to friends and family. So really what I am saying is this is all his fault! ‘The wood helps me decide what I’m going to make. I try to save the most diseased parts of a tree which can give really special features I love so much. Once the wood is kiln-dried, I get an image in my head that various combinations of wood, steel, glass, maybe stone will work together. I let it evolve naturally. I love making tables, mirrors, lamp bases, clocks, and coat hooks.

Whatever I make, there will never be another exactly the same.’ Julie’s passion is to create beautiful things. She continued, ‘I use a variety of mediums allowing me the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques. What inspires me? The colours and materials I use take me on a journey. I might have a rough idea to start with, but I enjoy the freedom to change my mind. I am always learning. It’s exciting to explore the endless possibilities the digital world can offer, combining old with new techniques is fascinating! ‘For us, the saying ‘Two heads are better than one’, is quite often true. We bounce ideas off each other. We have very similar tastes which obviously helps. We both take commissions and can make pieces to suit individual requirements and taste. ‘At the Mill Studio we have a small gallery where you can view samples of our work and also purchase. till basking in the glow of a summons to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh in July to receive the insignia of OBE from Her Majesty the Queen is Aberdeen business woman Alison Sellar whose company, activpayroll, has spread like wildfire to more than 140 countries in the past 16 years. However, the envelope containing news of the honour being given to the former Aberdeen Grammar School pupil could easily have landed up in the bucket.

Alison is not alone in dreading the sight of brown envelopes arriving in the post and said: ‘To be honest, I thought it was a parking ticket I was getting so I was thrilled to discover otherwise.’ She is proud of receiving the accolade for services to business in Scotland and abroad but is quick to acknowledge members of the team who sort out the payroll for thousands of people worldwide.

Alison is very grateful to her parents Norma and Allan Smart, of Grampian Business Bureau, for whom she worked before being made a partner in 1999 and branching out with activpayroll. Oh, and along the way, she is mum to Thomas and Danielle and, by the way, is an ardent fundraiser for charities, cycling hundreds of miles for good causes such as the Maggie’s cancer centre in Aberdeen. Yorkshire in August and India in November are next on the agenda.

At the helm with her are husband Euan, who is chief operating officer, business services director Sian Odgers and global tax director Graham McKechnie. ‘We are so fortunate to have great staff who fly the flag for us abroad,’ Alison added. ‘We started in 2001 with just one client in the oil and gas sector of the North Sea but by 2005 we had opened our first overseas office in Perth, Western
