FROM THE EDITOR
Hello again,
One of the joys of spring – and it is spring, we’ve decided, even if the weather won’t cooperate – is that it brings the chance to discover new things when we’re out and about in the North-east of Scotland.
You can head north and discover the mellow delights of the Spirit of Speyside festival, or wander over to the west coast and pay a visit to Skye, which is great for couples, families and foodies. We’ve picked out some charming family walks for kids of all ages that feature a café or somewhere to go for a treat before you head home. Somehow an uphill slog is always greatly improved by a portion of chips or an ice cream depending on the temperature.
Keeping it local, why not add some colour to your life by supporting some of our featured artists and makers at the Deemouth Artist Studios, or revamp your garden with a bit of help from our garden designer Kirsty McLean. You could treat yourself to a Trend event and help raise funds for local charities in the process.
If shopping’s more your thing, we’ve pulled together a great collection of accessories and some of the highlights of the latest lines to hit our favourite independent boutiques as well as a guide to choosing your new bed or walking boots. We’ll even help you look your best now that the cold winter nights are receding and we can start to remove some of the 17 layers of clothing that we’ve been wrapped up in since New Year.

We all know that walking is one of the best ways of staying active and healthy, but around 70% of us are wearing the wrong shoe size. Our feet are constantly measured as children, but almost never as adults. Finding the right footwear is especially important when it comes to walking shoes, hiking boots and running shoes.
Shoes which don’t fit properly or which don’t adapt to our individual foot structure, weight distribution and gait can lead to everything from blisters and bunions to plantar fasciitis and heel pain. Visiting a local specialist can avoid an expensive and painful mistake.
Just like designer heels, some brands are more comfortable than others. Many of the Italian brands, like Scarpa, are great for narrow feet, whereas Keen and Merrell both offer a wider fit. Look for a lighter weight and technical fabrics which offer waterproofing and breathability, combined with decent padding and a comfortable fit. Don’t opt for a bigger size that leaves your feet sliding around unless you’re keen to sprain your ankle.
Our feet swell during the day, so buying in the afternoon can mean a better fit.
When you’re trying boots on, wear the same type of socks you’d wear when walking and check for areas that feel tight, or seams that put pressure on your feet. Look for good arch support as this will make walking a pleasure.
Look for durable boots that will last for years. Leather boots are often stiff and need a bit of breaking in before they are comfortable, but old boots can feel like wearing slippers. Some companies even offer a resoling service, meaning a lifetime
of wear. You want soles that combine durability and grip, particularly when Scottish hills tend to scree and bogginess.
Some specialists can also supply orthotic insoles that mould to the feet and compensate for structural issues, like pronation and supination, where the weight is placed disproportionally on the inside or outside of the foot respectively, as we walk.
It can be worth trying on both women’s and men’s boots to find the most comfortable fit. Take your time, walk around and don’t rush the buying decision.
Sometimes nature needs a helping hand, particularly if your eyelashes are very short or pale to the point of invisibility. Here’s our round up of some of the latest products and local treatment options…
Scandinavian Biolabs, the natural hair growth experts, have an Eyelash Growth Serum which is 100% vegan. The plant-based serum with their proprietary, clinically tested Bio-Pilixin© formula helps to create fuller-looking lashes by stimulating the lash follicles to increase growth, while forming a nourishing, soothing and protective layer around each lash to increase strength and density. Ingredients include an amino acid complex and biotin – Vitamin B7 – which acts as a natural conditioning agent to maintain hydration, prevent breakage and improve hair quality. Amaranth adds gloss and shine while Capilia Longa is rich in plant growth factors, helps reactivate growth in dormant hair follicles while providing nourishment for optimal growth.
The serum is applied to clean skin, along the roots of the lashes, like an eyeliner. The eyes should be free of makeup or skincare products and the serum applied once or twice a day. The best results are seen after four weeks or daily use.
It’s available from Sephora.co.uk and sacndinavianbiolabs.co.uk for £49.
While a growth serum can enhance your lashes over a period of weeks and months,
sometimes an instant result is required. Freeze Frame’s Instant Lash Extreme gives you the look of professional lash extensions with just the flick of your wrist. The heart shaped cushion fibres brush-on as easily as mascara, but the fibres attach themselves to your own lashes, lengthening and stretching outwards and upwards for your long, voluminous, fluffy lashes. You’ll find it at freeze-frame. co.uk for £38.
If you’re confident and have a steady hand, you can do lash extensions at home with Velour’s DIY Lash Extension Kit. It’s a little fiddly at first, but with practice you can achieve salon quality lash extension results for five days, in less than 10 minutes. The lash extensions are waterresistant lash extensions are completely customisable so you get the look you want. Find the kit at Sephora.co.uk for £35.
Fake lashes come in all shapes and sizes from wispy to Drag Race contestant, but if you’re for something that looks natural try Lilly Lashes Everyday Unveil Lashes, a reusable ultra-wispy light flare lash that gradually adds volume and length is perfect finishing touch for any daytime or soft glam look. They’re easy to apply, stay put and are simple to remove at the end of the day. You’ll find them at beautybay.com for £22.00.
If you prefer to buy local, then Julia Stronach has her own range of faux lashes at jewelcosmetics.co.uk. She has some superb featherweight lashes and some striking reusable strip lashes that offer excellent quality for £7.25. She can also teach you how to apply them, as well as the rest of your makeup to flatter and rejuvenate.
There are a number of effective salon treatments too. You’ll find LVL Lashes at Liana’s Beauty Company, Bloom Lifestyle and Treat Company in Inverallochy. Essentially, the lashes are set which curls them upwards, then tinted making them look longer and giving more emphasis to your eyes. All three also offer lash extension treatments where lash fibres are individually

PORTER PHARMACY: Breathe your way to better health with Oxygen Therapy
We all know that oxygen is essential for life, but there are a host of health benefits associated with inhaling oxygen at greater pressure. It’s called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and you can now experience the benefits for yourself at Porter Pharmacy in Westhill.
Oxygen Therapy Manager Gail Winchester explained, ‘Studies have shown so many conditions benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It’s beneficial for pain relief, wound healing, sports performance, long Covid recovery, skin conditions, menopausal issues, sleep apnoea, arthritis and muscle and bone conditions to
name a few. It boosts mental wellbeing, relieves anxiety and depression symptoms and is a very relaxing experience. It is not suitable for anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator or serious sinus or lung issues like COPD.
‘Each session in the chamber lasts an hour; the pressure gently increases, followed by 40 minutes of pure O2 before a gradual decompression. Many people describe the sensation as similar to flying.
‘Sessions cost £75 for an hour, but are also available in blocks of five or ten at a reduced price, as it works best with a cumulative build up in your body. At the moment, we have a special introductory offer of £10 off a trial session using the code Trend10.

When it comes to looking pulled together, the right accessories can make the difference between stand-out style and a sartorial slump.
Some accessories are worth investing in because they’ll look great forever. Indeed, there’s a considerable vintage market for designer bags and accessories with some being worth more than you originally paid for them.
Leather gloves, sunglasses, scarves and designer handbags are always in style and can make even a casual outfit look more polished. If you’re splashing out, then it makes sense to stick with classic neutrals like black, caramel and navy since they’ll work with a wide range of colours. Once you’ve acquired the
Tiger LilyThese days, it’s not just women who are interested in looking good as they age. Luckily, there are lots of innovative treatments available for men who want to look their best whether they’re 25 or 55.
It’s about looking your best but in a natural way. Statistics suggest that around 7.7 million people in the UK had some form of aesthetic treatment in the UK in 2022 and that’s set to double by next year.
Rather than vanity, it’s thought that Zoom meetings and Instagram mean we all feel rather pressured to look better. For most men, choosing to improve their appearance is about feeling more confident in your own skin, and that’s easier if your skin’s looking smooth, taut and glowing with health.
Martina Mackay at Aesthetic Beauty Inverurie can work minor miracles with her DermaPen treatments, which rejuvenate the skin, promoting the production of collagen and elastin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and helping to erase the signs of aging.
Jan Leiper-Whiteford at The Skin Bothy on Carden Place offers radio-frequency microneedling that can improve signs of aging, such as sagging on the jawline, jowls and neck, as well as fillers and body treatments. She offers free consultations too. Jan commented, ‘We are seeing a phenomenal increase in male appointments. Popular treatments are jaw line definition and chin augmentation using Teoxane dermal filler, which lasts up to 18 months and non-surgical rhinoplasty.
‘Our male clients are also interested in collagenboosting skin boosters using polynucleotides which are fragments of DNA that restore the structure of the skin from the inside and our LED light Hydrafacial treatments for the face, neck, chest, back, hands and lips.’
Hair is another source of appearance woes for men. If it’s a case of too much and in the wrong places, then IPL laser hair removal may be the way to go. It’s more permanent and a lot less ouchy than waxing! Try Treat Company at Inverallochy, who have some of the most advanced kit available.
If too little hair is the issue, then it may be time to explore hair restoration. Alpha Hospital Group offer Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy, (PRP) which can help restore hair growth which has been backed up by scientific research and it can help tissues heal and increase the production of collagen. They also have a full range of face and body procedures if it’s time to go under the knife.
If you’re not up for needles and knives, then a regular facial, lifting treatments like CACI or laser skin resurfacing can be a worthwhile investment. Liana Pert offers excellent custom facials, while Bloom Lifestyle on Rose Street offer skin-boosting facial treatments from just 15 minutes and can update your hair to a more flattering style too.
When it comes to aesthetic treatments for men, the most commonly performed procedures are aesthetic injectibles, such fillers and anti-wrinkle products. Most treatments are administered by specially trained doctors, nurses or dentists like Dr. Siobhan Hewson of The Terrace Aesthetics, who’s known for the natural-looking results achieved.
Whatever you decide, there’ s a treatment out there that will leave you looking your best and feeling great.
Pucker up!
Treat your lips this spring with a lip blushing treatment from Kacey at Treat Co.
Lip blushing is an amazing semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing procedure that lasts 2 to 5 years. Colour pigments are deposited using tiny needles, to create flattering, younger looking lips customised to your natural lip colour, undertone, and skin tone.

One of the world’s largest whisky festivals will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year when over 85 venues open their doors on 1st of May.
There’s something to suit everyone’s taste with over 650 events ranging from the Spirit of Speyside Festival Ceilidh at The Macallan, the Ultimate Whisky Flight which includes a helicopter tour with Glenfarclas, bottling your own Murray McDavid Whisky directly from the cask and of course, Duncan Taylor’s Drams in the Dark.
You can also play Whisky Detectives with Glenlivet Hill Trek or join the Our Whisky Foundation House Party at The Dowans Hotel.
George McNeil, Chair of The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, said, ‘It’s incredible to think this is the 25th year of the festival and it continues to grow in size and stature. The distilleries in Speyside that take part make it a truly unique festival. It’s a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in the
whisky world with worldclass experiences, behind the scenes tours, visit distilleries that don’t normally open their doors to the public and enjoy a few days in this beautiful part of the world. I think this year will be our biggest and best yet so would encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment.’
Five distilleries will celebrate their 200th anniversary this year. The Macallan, The Glenlivet, Miltonduff, Cardhu and Balmenach will all reach that special milestone.
Tormore Distillery is opening its doors again for the first time this century. As well as their open day, don’t miss Tales from Tormore where a panel of past, present, and future workers will share their fascinating stories.

The Macallan distilled the whisky during World War II in 1940 and has matured it for 81 years. Meldrum House will be the one of only two luxury Scottish hotels
that have purchased the historic bottle. The other is Gleneagles.
The 800-year-old Cave Bar features over 120 rare and independent whiskies and previously won a Global Icon Award for ‘Best Hotel Bar’ from Whisky Magazine. Find out more at meldrumhouse.com
Making ends meet in a new life chapter
Family lawyers often meet concerned clients who are worried about how they will get by financially when they separate. When marriages and civil partnerships break down, it is not uncommon for one spouse or civil partner to require ongoing financial support from the other following separation, particularly when they have been financially dependent to a significant degree on the other.
What support am I entitled to?
With ever rising costs of living, the issue of spousal support following separation, known as ‘spousal aliment’, has become a more prominent issue. The Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 provides that spouses owe a legal obligation of aliment to one another, both during the marriage and following separation. Aliment and interim aliment can be payable from separation until an overall financial settlement has been agreed upon or until divorce. Obligations of aliment and interim aliment are based on needs and resources, earning capacities and generally all the circumstances of the case.
How much would I be entitled to?
The amount of aliment should be sufficient to meet regular monthly expenditure but must also be reasonable having regard to the income and other resources of both spouses. The amount of aliment can be agreed mutually or negotiated through Solicitors. It is always advisable to have aliment documented in a written Agreement to make the obligation legally binding. That Agreement can include a mechanism for variation of the amount payable if there is a material change in circumstances, such as a significant change in income. Some spouses do require to go to Court to
have the judge determine what amount of aliment, if any, should be paid. There are no set amounts of aliment prescribed by law nor are there limitations on the Court when making an order for aliment.
What happens after divorce?
After divorce, neither spouse has a duty to pay spousal aliment. Instead, if there is to be any maintenance between the parties, it is known as periodical allowance. Scots law places emphasis on a ‘clean break’ after divorce. As a result, periodical allowance will generally only be considered if the capital settlement is not sufficient to allow the financially weaker spouse to adjust to their new life post-divorce. In Scotland, payments of periodical allowance are normally limited to no more than three years, unless one party is likely to suffer severe financial hardship.
Financial support in relation to the children is a separate matter and can either be dealt with by the Child Maintenance Service, by agreement between parents or by the courts (in limited circumstances).
If you believe you may be entitled to aliment or interim aliment, it is important that you contact a solicitor as early as possible in the separation process to ensure you receive all the financial support you are entitled to.
Financial wellbeing plays an important part in our health and happiness. Here are three tips to feel better about your finances.
What really matters?
Spoiler alert: financial wellbeing isn't just about money. It can be things that don't have any direct financial connection like having more time with family or a healthier work life balance.
When establishing what matters to you, avoid comparing yourself to others or thinking that social media influencers ‘have it all’. Instead, stay focused on you and your loved ones by having an open and honest conversation about what you want to get out of life with them. Talking about money isn't always easy but it’s a big step towards better financial wellbeing.
Think positive
Have you ever thought ‘it’s too soon, or too late, to start investing?’
It’s true that the earlier you get started with investing the more chance your portfolio has to grow. But it’s never really too late, if you have a window of five years or more before you want to use your money. If your timescales are shorter, there are still options available that can help you make the most of your funds.
Investing can feel confusing and full of jargon but it doesn’t need to be this way. If you think investing might be right for you, then speaking to an independent financial adviser can help make the complex simple and give you confidence.
Balance and control
The practical side of financial wellbeing - getting organised and feeling in control of our financescan relieve stress and improve wellbeing. At this time of year, a good practical step is to look at whether you’re making the most of your annual tax-free ISA (Individual Savings Account) allowance - up to £20,000 for the 2023/24 tax year.
Good financial planning can help you identify what you really want to get out of life, working back from these priorities to map out a road for your savings and investments that can make your vision a reality.

They say you should never skimp on buying anything that comes between you and the ground. That includes shoes, car tyres and, naturally, your bed. The latter is particularly important given that we spend around a third of each day tucked up asleep and definitely not gently snoring no matter what our partners claim.
Poor sleep is an increasing problem with up to half of people in Western countries reporting that they don’t get in their eight hours of sublime snoozing. In fact, insomnia strikes between 6-10% of adults, with women being twice as likely to experience broken sleep and older people more affected.
We asked Leanne Watt of Frasers of Ellon for her advice on what to look for when buying a new bed or mattress. Leanne explained, ‘Experts recommend replacing your mattress every six to eight
years. That’s not just for hygiene reasons, but because it will soften over time, reducing the support it gives you. If you are waking up feeling sore or you find you sleep better in other beds, then it might be time for a change!
‘A good mattress needs to give both support and comfort, especially if you suffer from back problems. If you have space, I’d suggest going for a larger bed as it can mean a better sleep experience. If space is tight, consider storage beds with built in drawers or ottoman beds to maximise storage space.
‘The best approach is to try out a few mattresses before you buy, so look for a mattress store that carries several different brands and has sales
staff that are happy to help and spend time helping you make the right choice. ‘There are lots of different materials and mattress types, from all-natural materials through to memory foam, latex and cooling gels. Ideally, look for a supplier who delivers and will take away and recycle your existing mattress.
‘A rolled mattress can be a cheaper option, which is great if you are tight on space for manoeuvring up a narrow staircase or using it in the spare room. The drawbacks are that you can’t try it out before buying and you’ll need to dispose of your old mattress by yourself, so the costs of van hire or waiting weeks for a council special uplift need to be factored in.
‘When it comes to bed frames, natural materials like wood
especially light oak and walnut, rattan and jute are still hugely on trend. Beige, taupe, tan and earthy neutral tones work well these materials, creating a quiet luxury aesthetic and providing you with a wider range of options when it comes to bedding. Upholstered headboards and fabric beds can add a glamourous vibe, especially in a rich and vibrant velvet colour to make a statement. It’s easy to replace a headboard every few years for a brand new look.
‘Above all, allow yourself the time to make the right choice. Lie in a range of positions, turn over and snuggle up. Spend a fair amount of time on each bed and narrow your choices down to two or three mattresses. Then try them again and make your decision.’

Deemouth Artist Studios HIDDEN TREASURES
From the outside, you’d never guess that a drab industrial unit on Torry’s South Esplanade East is one of the city’s most creative powerhouses. Deemouth Artist Studios houses twenty five local artists, makers and designers working in a wide variety of media.
The studios are a hub for ceramicists including Aimee Catherine Morris, AJ Simpson, Amy Benzie, Mags Gray and Celda Mae, who also makes jewellery.
Jewellery makers include acrylic and found object specialist Aubin Jewellery, Maria Laidlaw, silversmith and enameller Emma Louise Wilson and Megan Falconer
Artists and illustrators are well represented too, with Barbora Nemcova, Di Bumpus, illustrator and printmaker Adrian Reid of Orange-ade, and seascape specialist Val Thompson
Camban Studio and Paper Houses Design both specialise in printed textiles, while Peter at Copper, Concrete & Wood makes useful, practical objects for the home. Elaine Grant creates playful textile pieces, while Purple Heron Upholstery can breathe new life into heirloom furniture.
On the fashion front, both Hackley and Fernweh offer hand-made bags,
Helen Ruth creates luxury scarves and accessories and artist Jo Muir curates her Wardrobe Foxes collection of vintage clothing and accessories for sale.
Two of the artists at Deemouth specialise in wood, but with radically different endproducts. Luthier Jamie McCloy builds beautiful acoustic guitars, while sculptor Allan Watson produces ambiguous painted wooden forms that delight the eye and confuse the mind.
Since these are working premises, you can’t just roll up and wander round. It’s best to check each resident’s website and make an appointment to view. There are open days throughout the year and some of the residents offer classes and workshops. Currently these include the chance to learn to make silver jewellery with Megan Falconer, a series of six hand-building ceramics classes with the Aberdeen Ceramics Studio, individual throwing or hand-building lessons with AJ Ceramics, or embroidery and textile workshops with Camban Studio.
There are always new designers and makers joining the studios, so there’s always something fresh and interesting going on.
Going for a walk as a family is a great way for the kids to explore the outdoors and have some time away from their phones and tablets. We’ve chosen four walks that combine interesting routes with places to stop for a treat.
Snipefield Woods & Sculpture Trail
This is a delightful walk for smaller kids, as they can explore the forest for fairies and gnomes, as well as discovering the carved animal sculptures along the trail. If you’re lucky, you might also spot some real wildlife. It can be muddy, so wellies are advised and buggies may get bogged down.
There’s a circular trail that takes around an hour to ninety minutes, or you can cut this in half by heading straight to the sculpture trail from the car park.
You’ll find Snipefield just past Oldmeldrum on the A920 between Cairnhill and Colpy, or you can approach from the A96. What 3 Words for the entrance is lawyer.history.trails. Afterwards, head to the café at Lochter Activity Centre for some snacks.
Aden Country Park
You’ll find Aden up near Mintlaw. There’s so much to explore here, from forests to ruined buildings and reconstructions of rural life and work, so it should appeal to kids of all ages. There are lots of walks through the 230 acre grounds and often some interesting activities organised by the farming museum and ranger service if you pre-book.
There are also children’s play areas, an outdoor gym, an enclosed dog agility area, BBQ and picnic areas, sensory
gardens and a café and gift shop for a little rest and recuperation before heading home. Check out what’s happening at adencountrypark.org.uk
Stonehaven Coast
There’s plenty to recommend a family stroll along the beach or boardwalk at Stonehaven, from rock pools to guddle, in to cute dogs in need of a pat, to the picturesque harbour with its bobbing boats and historic buildings. There’s also a great playpark at the leisure centre and a skateboard park too. The main difficulty is deciding whether to have an ice cream or fish and chips. The correct answer may be to have both and extend your walk by marching uphill to Dunnottar Castle. The castle is worth exploring and the interpretation signage is excellent. If you’re still peckish, there’s a welcoming snack bar at the top of the hill.
Hazelhead Park
If you’d rather take your stroll within the city boundaries, then Hazelhead is a great option for taking the kids for a walk. You might spot a red squirrel or two in the woods, or you could encourage your offspring to get lost in the maze. There are peaceful formal gardens, play areas, sculptures and the delightful Pet’s Corner, where you’ll find a host of birds, farm animals and small furries, as well as alpacas, a Shetland pony, miniature donkeys, fish and reptiles including a Burmese python. There’s a great café for when you’re all pooped out too.
Kirsty McLean shares some sources of inspiration…
garden visits and shows are a wonderful way to connect with the creativity of others but also the suppliers of all things to do with gardens and gardening too
As a professional Garden Designer, inspiration can come from literally anywhere, at any time. It could be the shape of a piece of jewellery, the detail on a building, clothing design, a particular colour, but for me, probably the biggest inspiration comes from nature and the natural landscape - it has so much to teach us! But of course, travel, garden visits, magazines, the internet, design programmes, current styles etc., are also amazing sources of inspiration and ideas.
When it comes to looking for inspiration for your own garden, there is such a wonderful array of sources these days making it easier than ever to explore different styles and find what appeals to you, or perhaps it’s a piece of furniture or garden art that you fall in love with that motivates your design?
It’s certainly easy to go down a rabbit-hole when searching online, between Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and websites! Magazines, both online and bought can provide fantastic inspiration and let you understand what is ‘on-trend’ - Homes & Interiors Scotland, Garden Illustrated, Homes & Gardens, House & Gardens are all excellent quality magazines that are readily available.
There is no substitute for physically experiencing what other people have created, garden visits and shows are a wonderful way to connect with the creativity of others but also the suppliers of all things to do with gardens and gardening too.
but opened to the public on specific dates of the year, in support of numerous charities. And of course, there are our trusted regular TV gardening programmes – Beechgrove Garden whose expert and intimate knowledge of gardening in Scotland is endless and for the wider community, Gardeners World.
The Royal Horticultural Society give us the most incredible variety of shows each year. Starting with the Urban Show in April this is quickly followed by Malvern Spring, Chelsea, Hampton Court, & Tatton Park and if you can’t get there, many are televised or details of show gardens available on their website. Here in Scotland we have Gardening Scotland in May at Ingliston, Threave Garden Show, Scone Palace Garden Fair, Glorious British Gardens, The Ideal Home Show Scotland and of course for a more horticultural experience, our very own Aberdeen Royal Horticultural Society, Spring Flower Show at the end of March and Flower Show at the end of August, held at Duthie Park.
Discover Scottish Gardens online suggests where to go for days out, helps you find an event and lists wonderful gardens to visit all over Scotland. The National Trust for Scotland provides us with an abundance of properties with beautiful gardens to visit where the purchase of a membership also goes toward the upkeep of these amazing places. Scotland’s Gardens Scheme (SGS) produces a fantastic guidebook each year of gardens that are privately owned
When it comes down to planting design, the RHS Plant Finder is great for sourcing specimen plants, and nursery websites and catalogues provide endless ideas. That said, visiting local garden centres and plant nurseries means you can ensure your new plants are in excellent condition and should flourish here.
If all this isn’t enough inspiration, many professional garden designers share their experience and knowledge in book form, which can also be very visual and therefore really helpful.
With such an abundance of great quality sources and resources, it’s hard to imagine not being able to find inspiration for your garden, whatever the size, shape, or orientation but if you still find it overwhelming, you can always reach out to a garden designer who will take the pain out of the process and support you.
Trend raises almost £100,000 for local charities
Since Trend started running events, we’ve always been keen to help out local charities. We’ve just got our calculator out and, thanks to everyone that has ever been to a Trend event, we’ve raised over £96,000.
Our fashion shows, lunches, festive events, ladies’ days, awards nights and garden parties have helped raise much-needed funds for twenty seven different local charities. These range from those helping the smallest members of our society – such as Friends of the Neonatal Unit, Befriend a Child, Children First, AberNeccessities, The Archie Foundation, Alfie’s Trust, JRDF and Charlie House – to those working with older people such as Cornerstone, Sue Ryder, Alzheimer’s and VSA. The funds you’ve raised have helped make life easier for those with cancer, MS, disabilities and mental health issues, as well as those needing a little extra support through organisations such as Clan, Maggie’s and Friends of Anchor, UCAN, Friends of Roxburgh and the MS Society, MHA, Aberdeen Cyrenians, The Foyer, Home Start, CFINE and many more.
On behalf of our charity partners, we’d just like to say a big thank you, because we know that it’s been more difficult for charities to raise funds over the past few years and every pound we raise through our events is much appreciated and put to good use improving the lives of those who live in the North-east of Scotland.
Help us reach the £100,000 milestone in 2024, by coming along to a Trend event. You’ll be helping local good causes, while having a great time!
Skye always seems to feature in the travel plans of visitors who expect to see all of Scotland in three days, because it offers many of the icons of a highland holiday in one neat package. Ancient castles? Brooding mountains? Blood-soaked history? Photogenic wildlife? Distilleries? Cute cafes, craft shops and interesting galleries? Great restaurants and plenty of accommodation options? Skye ticks all the boxes.
At 50 miles long, Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides. These days the bridge makes getting there easier, but lacks the romance of a ferry trip. Take the scenic route via Inverness and across to Kyle of Lochalsh, or the more sedate route down through Perthshire and up via Spean Bridge and the lochs of the A87. Either way, you’re looking at five hours or so in the car. If you’d prefer public transport, your best bet is Scottish Citylink buses either via Glasgow or Inverness.
Portree is a great starting point, with lots of interesting little shops and charming colourful harbourside houses. There’s accommodation to suit all tastes, but wherever you decide to stay on Skye, it’s worth booking 3-6 months in advance to get a good selection of properties.
Outside Portree, the island is dotted with villages, each with their own characters and a network of surprisingly busy single track roads. Driving can be a little stressful in the peak summer season with confused campervanners and locals in a hurry.
Skye is very much about the great outdoors. Walkers and climbers will find much to challenge them on the Trotternish Ridge or the dozen Munros in the Cuillins, though there are lots of shorter and flatter walks for the less experienced or less gung-ho types. If you get lucky, you might see soaring White-tailed Sea Eagles, take a boat trip to see playful dolphins and whales, or have a chance encounter with an otter or red deer. You can take a stroll then have a dip in the Fairy Pools, hike to the dramatic Old Man of Storr or visit the Fairy Glen.
There’s plenty for history buffs too, with warring clans, castles, Highland clearances, Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie popping up all over the place. Eilean Donan, the fossilised dinosaur footprints and the Museum of Island Life are all worth a visit, as is the Colbost Crofting Museum.
Foodies with bulging wallets should head for Skye’s collection
of restaurants with Michelin stars or mentions. These include Edinbane Lodge, Loch Bay Restaurant, Scorrybreac, Coruisk House and The Three Chimneys, all of which require booking a couple of months in advance, especially in summer.
If your budget is more miniscule than Michelin, then there are some great takeaway options. Pizza in the Skye at Skye Camanadh Social Club in Portree offers amazing wood-fired pizzas, while The Oyster Shed at Carbost may be a little off the beaten track and doesn’t run to
any toilets, but it does dish up the freshest seafood and phenomenal fish and chips. The distilleries at Talisker and Torabhaig will slake your thirst for knowledge in their visitor centres, too.
If Skye feels a bit frenetic, then take the 25 minute ferry crossing to Raasay, which boasts rolling hills to native forests and secluded beaches, some unique species, a handmade road, an outdoor

MEET PROFESSIONAL SINGER PAUL BLACK…
I'm an 80’s child. I was born in Westhill and grew up in Cults with my Mum and younger brother and sister. My mum was a music teacher, so I’ve always had a passion for music and gravitated towards singing at an early age. As a three-year-old, I’d be strumming on a tennis racquet and singing The Beatles, so I guess it was always in my blood. I remember watching a video of Elvis in Las Vegas and listening to hours of Sinatra at my grandparent’s house as they danced together.
During my school years I joined choirs and drama groups, before moving to London in my early 20s to pursue my dream career. I sang in holiday parks, large tourist venues and toured with musical companies before moving back to Aberdeen to start what would take me to where I am now.
Over the years, I’ve played at some pretty special venues including London’s ExCel, Skibo Castle and Aberdeen’s HMT. I’ve also sung for Sir Jackie Stewart, Susan Boyle and Sir Alex Ferguson.
When I’m not performing, it’s all about family time. I have two beautiful daughters, Frankie and Rudi and my gorgeous fiancé Libby. We love heading to the beach, trips with our dog Levi and movie nights when the girls build a cinema sweetie counter and charge us! I’m also 39 going on 80. I love gardening, cooking and walking, especially when the walk ends at a decent pub!
It’s hard to nail down the kind of music I provide because I play at so many varied events. I sing background/chilled sets at wedding drinks receptions or arrivals for large events. But then I bring out the bangers for upbeat sets
