Rejuvenate your Face MINI FACELIFT Mini facelift surgery is one of the most common types of facelift surgery. It addresses wrinkles and sagging skin on the lower third of the face using small incisions placed around the ears. It restores definition to the chin by removing excess tissue and artfully tightening remaining tissue. Mini facelift surgery can provide some physical and emotional benefits; • • • •
Minimal scarring - incisions are concealed in your natural face contours and hairline Minimal side effects - less swelling and bruising than a more extensive facelift Conservative treatment - addresses the issues of the lower face area and neck No general anaesthetic - can be done using a local anaesthetic mitigating the risks associated with a GA and you will be able to go home immediately after the procedure

COSMETIC EYELID SURGERY Blepharoplasty - can address issues such as excess eyelid skin and tired looking eyes giving you a fresher appearance. However, there are some conditions that prohibit this type of surgery. Having any kind of plastic surgery is a big step and worth thinking about carefully. It is natural to feel a bit anxious. You will want to know what can be achieved, what is involved and what the possible outcomes and risks are.
If the mention of surgery seems too much, treatment with the A|C|C|O|R® Cosmetic Corrector is the gentle alternative to skin tightening surgery. The pen creates an ionised plasma arc which projects onto the skin surface. The plasma arc instantly vaporises a point of skin at the required position, thereby tightening the immediate surrounding area. As with all treatments at TAC, first you will need to be assessed. This is an opportunity to discuss what the goals for your appearance are. Mr Athanassopoulos, Plastic Surgeon says ‘it is a good idea to think about specific things you would like to improve, for example bumps, wrinkles or drooping, rather than just having a broad dislike of yourself. Any previous treatments or injuries to the area are important, as is your past medical history. All of this information will help work out what is best for your appearance, concerns and health.’
As with any procedure there is not a one fit suits all solution. There may be one or more operations or treatments that could help. Each will have pros and cons and these need to be considered honestly. Any surgery will have a recovery period, leave some scars and have some risk of side effects or complications. Good care will help to minimise these but they cannot be eliminated. The risks will have to be acceptable to you. It is also important to get a realistic picture of what your result might be. Whilst a good improvement in specific areas of concern is reasonable, ‘perfection’ is very difficult to achieve. Before and after photographs can be very helpful. There may also be specific information leaflets and websites that can help. A second consultation is usually a good idea before proceeding as it’s common to think of questions later on. Overall, there is a lot to take in. To make the best decision you need advice from someone appropriately trained, sympathetic, honest and skilled and most importantly who you feel comfortable and confident with.

FROM THE
EDITOR Hello again,
I
t seems fair to say that we’ve seen the last of the summer and we’re now firmly into autumn. This is one of our favourite times of year, as the colours of the leaves change before they fall and we start to think ahead to Halloween, Bonfire Night and then Christmas. It’s all about a natural glow, rosy cheeks and toffee apples. There’s something beguilingly cosy about the months before Christmas. Whether you’re updating you’re wardrobe with key pieces in leather and tweed, indulging in a catch up over coffee and cake in your favourite café, or looking for some new looks for your home, we’ve got it covered. It’s also a time for being together, so we have lots of new ideas for spending time with your family and friends. Perhaps head to a Christmas market, or enjoy a Sunday lunch without having to do the washing up. Head to Dundee to explore the best of Scottish design at the new V&A or even go and visit some cute alpacas and miniature donkeys. Talking of good design, don’t miss Trend’s Christmas Fayre at The Marcliffe Hotel on Sunday 4th November. Don’t let the darker nights and cooler temperatures put you off. There’s still so much to discover, to explore and to enjoy in October and November. We’re here to help you make the most of it.

t David Lloyd Clubs, we love to keep our child members active with the help of our DL Kids team. There’s always something new and fun for our youngest members. Our latest introductions to our timetable are cheerleading and hula hooping. These new classes have proved to be a huge hit since they started in August. David Lloyd Cheerleading is designed to help teach children important life skills such as coordination, creative thinking, fine and gross motor skills all while following a fun and energising exercise program that gets children excited about physical activity. Our DL Cheer & Hula program is filled with a range of different moves, techniques and routines that can be adapted for kids of all ages and abilities, so everyone has a great time!
We also offer specialised gym classes for our child members who are that wee bit older, with supervised Synergy sessions, family boot camp and access to the gym with parental supervision once our start up program has been completed. As well as cheerleading, we offer an enormous variety of classes -from Football Coaching, Multi Sports, Les Mills’ Born to Move, Make and Create, Let’s Create, Get Active, Mini Dance and an extensive swimming and Tennis Allstars program. For our mini members, there’s a crèche 4 days a week, where the children will be looked after while mums, dads, grandma or grandpas will be able to work out or have a coffee in our clubroom.
With the October holidays fast approaching, DL Kids Holiday Club is the place to be. Children will have a full day packed with fun, with arts and craft, swimming, tennis and lots of sports and games. We even introduced a Fortnite dance class during our Summer Holiday Clubs, where the children were learning to Floss and Electro Shuffle, just like in their favourite video game! David Lloyd Clubs is a great way to get all the family active.

H
orse-riding is the perfect form of exercise for autumn, whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced rider. It’s a good activity for the entire family to try together. There are riding stables which offer lessons, gentle hacks or more strenuous activities in many of the region’s towns as well as on the outskirts of the city itself. You may think the horse does all the work, but your leg and bottom muscles will soon convince you otherwise! Riding provides improved core strength, enhancing the back, abdominal and leg muscles and really improves your awareness of your body and co-ordination. A rising trot will soon demonstrate the need for a sense of balance and rhythm. You’ll also benefit from improved
flexibility and toned muscles and a gallop can also provide a cardio workout. Horses tend to have a mind of their own, so working with them encourages focus, concentration and helps with mindfulness and being in the moment. Getting the basics such as your riding posture is important, so taking lessons with a reputable, qualified instructor makes good sense. Look for BSJ qualifications, good reviews and well cared for mounts. Once you’ve progressed, there are pony clubs and advanced options such as jumping, cross-country and dressage and you may want to consider buying your own horse. If you’d prefer a horse or pony for companionship, the Scottish SPCA at Drumoak often have animals available for adoption. Riding also offers tremendous mental wellbeing benefits, from bonding emotionally with your horse to simply letting go of every day cares, so a couple of hours away from the world can also prove truly relaxing and re-energising.

Linton & Mac win at national Hair Magazine Awards Linton & Mac, the Aberdeen-based hair and beauty salon based on Netherkirkgate, is celebrating after winning at this year’s Hair Magazine Awards. The salon was named as the winner in the Regional Salon category for Scotland at the consumer-judged Hair Awards 2018. The win wasn’t the only success that Linton & Mac celebrated at this year’s Hair Awards, as the salon’s Principal Stylist and Colour Expert (and former winner of the 2017 L’Oréal Colour Trophy), Sarah Black, was also named as one of the six finalists in the Colour Expert category.
The Gym is an exciting new concept opening in Aberdeen this October. Amy Christie and Sarah Paterson launch the first multifunctional business space right in the heart of the city. The Gym is not only a make-up and blow dry bar, it’s a full work out space for body and mind, and it promises to be a fun and comfortable place to spend time while The Gym girls will be on hand to make you look and feel your best. Amy previously ran Profile, an award winning salon, and she felt the traditional hair salon concept needed modernising. She said, ‘A place in town offering quick fixes for hair and make-up is long overdue'.
When they are not providing hair and beauty services, the space will be transformed into a small studio where fitness expert Zara will be hosting a number of classes along with advice on getting the best from your body. For more sensitive matters, Elena, their resident counsellor, will be taking bookings. ‘We hope that by offering counseling in such a unique environment it will help remove some of the stigma and fear when it comes to asking for help.’ 33 HUNTLY STREET, ABERDEEN AB10 1TJ

T
he unique programme, available from October exclusively for Grand Aura customers, uses advanced technology to target the scalp and is more cost-effective than traditional methods with no downtime.
A new specialist treatment has been developed by an Aberdeen-based medical professional that helps restore confidence in individuals suffering from hair loss or thinning hair.

The Capilium Programme comprises an initial six-month course which typically includes a combination
of treatment techniques, such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and meso therapy, as well as a home care plan to complement the treatments, dependent on the needs of the individual. Based on Carden Place, Grand Aura is a doctor-led professional dermatology clinic with experienced staff providing bespoke skin and beauty treatments – just minutes away from Union Street.

When it comes to skincare, sometimes natural is best. Dump the dubious chemicals, abandon plastic microbeads which end up polluting the oceans and go for a gentler approach. Your skin will thank you for it!
One of the joys of using organic products is that many are hand-made in small batches, by people who have dedicated themselves to finding the best combination of ingredients that really work without damaging either your skin or the environment. Look for products that have been certified by a reputable body such as the Soil Association, as some products use labels such as natural or eco-friendly that lack defined standards.

MOISTURISER Angela Langford was a Masterchef semi-finalist, so it’s no surprise she can blend the perfect skincare range. We particularly like her Thirsty Work moisturiser. One area where organics brands haven’t quite caught up with Korean beauty brands is in face masks. You’ll find surprisingly few sheet masks, perhaps because of concerns about lack of recyclability. That said, Ayurvedic beauty specialists, Khadi, offer a heavenly range of face mask powders which smell great. Just mix up the powder with water, milk or almond milk and make your own facial treatment. Try the rose for more mature skin, or orange for combination skin. £12.90 from pravera.co.uk
The way we apply our products can also make a huge difference to the appearance of skin tone. The SENSSE™ Facial Contour Definer is a facial roller which works with your moisturiser or facial oil, leaving you with a rejuvenated complexion. The massage action helps tone and sculpt the facial muscles, assisting with lymphatic drainage and boosting circulation and collagen production. £39.99 from amazon.co.uk
Some beauty products aren’t suitable for vegetarians or vegans, but Algenist’s new Genius Liquid Collagen Lip uses a vegan collagen derived from microalgae to plump lips an reduce the appearance of fine lines. It has a ceramic tip applicator and leaves you with softer, smoother lips. Find it at spaceNK.co.uk for £36.

Tweed, once the province of the landed aristocracy and aged spinster detectives, has been back on the fashion map since Chanel bought their own mill in the Borders a few years ago. If the budget won’t stretch to Chanel, try this relaxed tweed poncho from Dubarry. It’s perfect teamed with jeans and some flat riding boots on a crisp, dry day. COLIN LYALL, OF BANCHORY’S TOR-NA-COILLE HOTEL I began my career in the kitchen during work experience with my brother, he was working as a sous chef at the time. I believe that there are a lot of opportunities for young people starting out in this industry. It can enable you to see the world or perhaps one day even open up your own place. The options are endless if you’re willing to be patient and stick at it. The Tor-na-Coille is a great place to work. You really get to know the people you work with and you become friends. I would describe the food as classical with a modern twist. Flavour is paramount. I have worked in 2 and 3 rosette kitchens across Scotland. I met my wife whilst working at Maryculter House hotel. We worked at the Bonham in Edinburgh then the Isle of Harris, before coming to the Tor-naCoille. The arrival of Ruby our daughter is the best thing to ever happen to us. It completely changes your outlook. My wife works full time at the hotel and Ruby is at nursery so we spend the week like passing ships. It’s great when we have a day together. I enjoy golf, but Sundays are all about Ruby’s swimming classes.
Smoked Haddock & Leek Chowder This is a simple, but really tasty and popular dish which features on the Tor-na-Coille menu. It serves four people and is superb with some crusty bread. INGREDIENTS
METHOD
2 red rooster potatoes, chopped 1 leek, washed & shredded 2 fillets smoked haddock 1 onion, diced 1 clove garlic 1/2 lemon 400ml cream 500ml milk Salt Ground white pepper Thyme 4 quail’s egg Bread crumbs 1 egg Flour
Sweat off the onion, garlic and thyme until soft but not coloured. Then add in half the potatoes, (reserve some for garnish) and the whites of the leeks. Keep the leek greens for serving. Cover with the milk and cook until tender. Drop in one smoked haddock fillet and cook gently for a few minutes. Blend in a blender while adding the cream and a splash of lemon juice until smooth. Set the haddock cream to the side. Simmer the remaining potato cubes in water until tender. Dice up remaining haddock. Warm the smoked haddock cream up then add in potatoes, green leeks, and smoked haddock. Warm until haddock and potatoes are cooked. For crispy quail egg: Boil the quail eggs for 2min 30 seconds, then chill in ice water. Peel the shells off, crumb with bread crumb. Fry until golden. There’s a lot of debate over what makes the perfect Sunday lunch. Is it about having the family gathered round the table? How about great slabs of roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, buttery mash or crispy roasted potatoes, half an allotment’s worth of vegetables and a moat of gravy? We say the secret of a perfect Sunday lunch is to save yourself hours of preparation and a mountain of washing up. Head out for lunch and let someone else do all the work. Here are our favourite places for a traditional Sunday lunch…
TREND TRIES | 47
Malmaison 40-53 Queen’s Road, AB15 4YP Probably the most sophisticated of our choices for Sunday lunch, Malmaison elevates Sunday lunch to an almost a religious event. The menu always offers new delights, starting with a home-made soup and some wonderful bread, then a trip to the Chef’s Table for a bottomless buffet of tempting little hors d’oeuvres. Next up, there’s a choice of roast chicken or beef sirloin with thyme scented Yorkshire puddings, or a large selection of main courses.
Vegetarians and vegans won’t feel left out with a choice of earthy mushroom pasta or a delightful spiced falafel and chickpea burger. Setting on a dessert is difficult, but both the pumpkin pie and the hot chocolate pudding should please. Children are welcome, Mal provides good value for families. malmaison.com
No. 10 Bar & Restaurant No.10 has long been a West End favourite and they certainly know how to do a traditional Sunday lunch with flair. It’s a great place to kick back with some friends or family in a relaxed a friendly atmosphere while taking advantage of the generous portion sizes. There’s a choice of two roasts on a Sunday, including No. 10’s Black & Gold Aberdeen Angus Rib Eye Beef,
10 Queen’s Terrace, AB10 1XL
alongside daily specials. New sharing dishes are a recent introduction to accompany your roast. These include cauliflower cheese and an oozy mac and cheese which is good enough for some diners to become a little territorial over. No.10 offers free on street parking on Sundays and has a children’s menu. no10aberdeen.co.uk
The Cults Hotel 328 North Deeside Road, Cults, AB15 9SE The Cults Hotel is another good choice if you’re looking for an informal approach to Sunday lunch. The carvery is the most popular option with a choice of gammon, turkey, roast beef and - rather unusually - venison on offer, alongside crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and a bewildering array of accompaniments, sauces, gravies and vegetables all for £14.95 per person. If you’re not up for a stacked plateful, then the regular lunch menu is also available. You’ll find everything from burgers to steaks, and the popular
Cults Chicken Cranachan; chicken breast served in a whisky cream & mushroom sauce topped with skirlie and cheddar cheese toasted under the grill. Go old school with mince and tatties or liver and bacon. Vegetarians can try the veggie noodle stir fry or a homemade veggie burger. Make sure you leave some room for the epic sticky toffee pudding before heading home for a relaxing afternoon nap! thecultshotel.co.uk

CRAIG WILSON OF EAT ON THE GREEN RUSTLES UP SOME ONE POT WONDERS
A
s the nights get longer, we’re all looking for meals that combine maximum flavour with minimum effort. Try cheaper cuts of meat left whole and popped into the slow cooker in the morning. Beef, lamb, pork, game and chicken all combine well with larger chunks of vegetables and herbs to make a deliciously easy dinner. Focus on root vegetables and bold spice mixes to create warming aromas. Add a splash of left over wine, port or sherry to the stock and let the magic happen.

Finishing twists can make for a special dish. Add infused oils or last minute garnishes like crispy kale, or fried herbs such as parsley, or crumble some black pudding into a pot of stovies and serve with oatcakes. Try reducing some fresh tomatoes with sugar and seasoning then sieve to make your own homemade tomato ketchup! For a twist - add some vodka! It’s fun and delicious, but for adults only!

Treehouse, the destination home store, have recently added to their inspirational shops in Midmar and Aberdeen by opening a beautiful new store in Ballater. Using the same winning formula with a stunning in-house café, makes this a must visit place for locals, tourists and those out for a country drive from Aberdeen.
‘We were involved in a considerable amount of replacement flooring, kitchens and furniture in the Ballater area after the flooding two years ago, and having spent a lot of time here, seeing the improvements and the upgrading of the village, we are excited to be part of the new optimism around tourism and the re-opening of shops and businesses in this part of Deeside’, explained Steve.
It was while Treehouse owners Steve and Suzanne Gardiner were renovating a cottage on the outskirts of Ballater last winter that they fell for the town, and when the opportunity arose to develop the former Co-op, they took it without hesitation.
Treehouse Ballater and the Aberdeen shop are mainly focused on gift and home accessories, while the Neptune kitchens, Wood Floor Centre, Hutcheson’s of Portsoy and Garrod Interiors concessions are all based within the much larger premises at Midmar.

It’s been an amazing summer making it hard to turn our thoughts to autumn but it is upon us and there are jobs to be done!
GARDENS | 63
F
irst off, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring them into a frostfree greenhouse. The end of October is a good time to prune overhanging plants after flowering, clear pathways and tidy up shrubs and trees that need a bit of shaping. Now is the time to move anything that needs to be transplanted. Clear up fallen leaves around the garden and tie in climbing plants. Give the lawn its last mowing and neaten up those edges ready for next year. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork after raking the thatch from the surface and repair any bare patches. This is a good time of year for laying turf too. Autumn is the perfect month to plant spring-flowering and hardy summer-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, lilies, alliums and crocosmia. Plant tulips in November. In the fruit and vegetable garden protect the plants that are still in the ground. Now is the time to construct cloches to cover crops such as chard and winter salads that are to stay in the ground over winter. Root crops should be lifted out of the soil and stored in a cool frostfree shed if they are to remain in good condition for eating over winter.
October and November are the best times to plant garlic. Split a bulb into individual cloves and plant them 10cm deep and 15cm apart. Each clove will grow into a new bulb of garlic by July next year. It’s best to buy from the garden centre rather than the supermarket. Broad beans and hardy peas can be sown now. They should germinate quickly and produce small plants that will overwinter. Sow the seed into pots and keep them in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel. Plant the seedlings into their final position in March. New fruit trees and bushes can be planted from October right through the winter months as long as the soil is not frozen. Young fruit trees need careful pruning to ensure they have a good framework for branches that will bear heavy crops in the future. Improve your soil in all the borders. For almost any type of soil the best thing you can do is add well rotted organic matter such as leafmould, degraded manure, mushroom compost……the list goes on. This can either be dug into the soil or applied to the surface as a thick mulch which will help to protect the soil from the worst of the winter weather. During the winter months earthworms will get to work in the organic matter helping to mix it into the soil ready for sowing seeds in the spring.

RED is the colour of holly berries and represents the blood of Jesus Christ. Red is also the colour of bishops’ robes which would have been worn by St Nicolas before becoming the uniform of Santas across the world! GOLD is the colour of the sun and light

WHITE is associated with purity and peace.
Traditionally, BLUE was only worn by the wealthy upper classes but is also thought to represent the sky and heaven. In modern times, it is associated with icicles and colder climates. - HOTEL ASSOCIATION TARGETS YOUNG PEOPLE
A
berdeen City and Shire Hotel Association (ACSHA) have been working hard in this Year of Young People to engage youngsters to choose a career in hospitality and tourism. If you were at the TREND awards dinner you might have met some sparkling young people from hotels across the city on the ACSHA table. Inviting them to this glamorous evening was all about encouraging youngsters, and showing them the fun side of the industry. Invitations to the upcoming Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) dinner in September and
the Regional Tourism Awards later in the year will also be offered to several more lucky youngsters. September will also see the arrival of three French students from one of Europe’s leading catering schools, The Escoffier. The prestigious school are working with ACSHA, Nescol and Aberdeen Inspired to offer the trio opportunities to work for two months as part of the hospitality teams of two leading Aberdeen city hotels, The Chester Hotel and The Carmelite. Gary Atkinson, owner of the Carmelite and Chair of ACSHA, was full of praise
for the initiative. ‘We believe strongly that training our younger employees is the key to building a stronger management team for the years to come. Our ambition is to have a long term relationship with The Escoffier in Paris with a full exchange programme next year’. The ACSHA is also working with the Chamber of Commerce and Developing Young Workforce (DYW) to plan an event to be hosted at The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa in November, to help to raise the profile of the hospitality industry amongst schools and parents.

children on a wet afternoon. If you’re on an adults-only trip, check out www.dca.org. uk for the latest exhibitions and event information. Their Crafted Christmas Market is on 1 December.
The opening of the new V&A is the biggest cultural event in Dundee since Desperate Dan took up ballet. You can see round most of the new museum for free, including the Scottish Design Galleries, or pay extra to see their opening exhibition on the elegance and glamour of Ocean Liners, which runs till February 24. Those with a nautical bent have plenty of attractions to choose from thanks to Dundee’s maritime heritage. HMS Unicorn was launched in 1824 and is the sixth oldest ship in the world. There isn’t much headroom, but you can explore all four decks inside and get an echo of what life must have been like aboard the last intact warship from the days of sail. Discovery Point houses RRS Discovery, the ship which took Scott and his companions to the Antarctic, complete with a dog-sled team, an unfeasible number of biscuits and a full set of fancy dress costumes.
The V&A may be the city’s newest cultural attraction, but there are plenty of interesting things to do. Families and animal lovers should pre-book a visit to Balnuith Rare Breed Farm, where you can walk with their adorable alpacas and admire their tiny Falabella ponies. You’ll fall in love with the miniature donkeys, which are possibly the cutest creatures on the planet. www. balnuith.co.uk. The Dundee Science Centre always has something interesting going on and is the perfect place for inquisitive
If you’re more of a landlubber, the Verdant Works is wellrated and tells the story of Dundee’s jute and textile industry. It’s a story of great contrasts; the grinding poverty of the mill workers and the opulently ostentatious wealth of the jute barons who owned the mills. You can buy a joint ticket for Discovery Point and Verdant Works.

Copenhagen has Christmas running through it like a stick of rock. There are festive markets galore, including one in the style of an Oriental bazaar, a traditional one in the picturesque old harbour Nyhavn, a market set in the renaissance Kronberg Castle’s ballroom and courtyard, and a Hans Christian Andersen themed market at Nytorv Square. There’s also a Christmas fair in the Tivoli Gardens and designer treats at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art.

There is something whimsical and nostalgic about going to an actual Christmas market in the festive run-up, which makes you feel like a kid again. Whether it’s the mulled wine and roast chestnuts, the lights and the carols, or an excuse to get a selfie with Santa, a visit to a Christmas market can’t fail to lift your spirits and get you in the mood. We looked at some you can visit direct from Aberdeen Airport…

B
ooks make a thoughtful Christmas gift, especially since a National Literary Trust survey last year suggested that over 750,000 UK schoolchildren do not have a single book of their own. Boys and teenagers were especially likely not to own books, which can leave them four times as likely to lag behind their peers when it comes to reading. Books offer lifelong joy and fascination, so it’s important to find a title to engage each individual child, whether they are six months old or sixteen.
desire to eat hard boiled eggs and lashings of ginger beer. Even amongst the youngest readers, Noddy has been replaced by The Dinosaur Who Pooped A Princess. Reluctant readers can often be encouraged if books are funny or illustrated well. David Walliams dominates the children’s best seller lists and is a safe bet, as are Jacqueline Wilson, J.K. Rowling, Tom Gates and Rick Riordan.
Sometimes old favourites are still popular. Paddington has recently enjoyed a resurgence, thanks to two film versions and Michael Bond’s tales of the little bear from Darkest Peru should appeal to those aged 4-7. There’s a box set of the complete Adventures of Paddington coming out in November to celebrate sixty years since his trip to join the Brown family. Make a family weekend of it by watching the films and munching on marmalade sandwiches.
Teenagers who enjoy online games such as World of Warcraft or have graduated from Hogwarts will also enjoy Scott Lynch’s Locke Lamora series or Joe Abercrombie’s the First Law novels. Like George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones epics, they are primarily aimed at adults, but can cross over for readers of thirteen and upwards. Ursula K. Le Guin’s marvellous EarthSea series is also being re-issued in November in a special illustrated edition that would make a good gift.
In other cases, the stories your parents read to you, or you read in your own childhood remain very much of their own time. Today’s children would be perplexed by The Famous Five going camping by themselves, let alone a
If you’re not sure where to start, head to your local library for ideas or your nearest bookshop’s kids’ section. Whichever you choose, the staff are all passionate about getting everyone reading.
Here are a few we love:
The Most Dangerous Book
The Wingsnatchers For ages 10-14, The Wingsnatchers is the first volume in Sarah Jean Horwitz’ Carmer and Grit series, featuring a magician’s apprentice and a one-winged faerie princess who must vanquish the steampunk monsters that stalk the streets of a faerie kingdom.
Even kids who don’t like reading will love Daniel Nayeri’s The Most Dangerous Book: An Illustrated Introduction to Archery. What could be better than a book you can use as a weapon? This comes complete with a bow which shoots paper arrows. It also provides an illustrated history of archery through the ages, sneaking in a bit of projectile physics and ballistic history before they know it. Being shot with paper arrows is a small price to pay for getting them interested in reading, as we’re sure that their siblings and family pets will agree. This should appeal to those between 8 and 12.
Animalphabet For younger readers who are just working their way through primary one, you can’t go far wrong with Julia Donaldson. She has teamed up with Sharon King-Chai to produce Animalphabet, an endearingly illustrated Animal A-Z which poses questions such as, ‘What’s wobblier than an iguana?’ or, ‘What’s bigger than an ant?’ Great for reading before bedtime.

his year saw Aberdeen Art Fair celebrate its eighth year. Trend popped along to the Aberdeen Art Fair to find out what’s popular… little as £50 to over £30,000. With a mix of styles, sizes and subjects, the Aberdeen Art Fair is a great option if you’re shopping for an original or print to bring a unique touch to your home. With such an eclectic mix of works on offer, organiser Gerry Muldoon, of GM Events, felt this year’s offerings were often about being brave and embracing the unexpected. There’s also a trend toward bigger works, which demand a lot of wall space. Many of the artists on show were expressing themselves on larger than normal canvasses to quite breath-taking effect, such as the immensely impressive draftsmanship of Ade Adesina’s massive monochrome industrial landscapes. Edinburgh’s Alpha Art Gallery’s stock includes stark minimalist landscapes from Ron Lawson, wonderful brooding seascapes from Hannah Ludnow and versatile abstracts from Natasha Barnes. If photography appeals,
then Lee Howell’s slightly surreal work is worth the wall space. There was also a selection of very contemporary, edgier graphic prints from Glasgow’s Subversion studios that owed a debt to Lichtenstein and Banksy in equal measures. Women artists were heavily featured at the show, mainly drawing inspiration from nature. Still life painting seems to have fallen out of fashion, and there were relatively few figurative pieces compared with works being sold through contemporary art sales at the main Scottish Auction houses. Landscapes seem by far the most popular genre with wide open, semi-abstract seascape canvases proving particularly popular. Gerry Muldoon explained, ‘Buyers are looking for absorbing landscapes and dreamlike scenery, which to be honest never goes out of fashion,
as well as work that highlights and reflects their own journey and lives. Sculpture is also proving popular and perhaps in this technology fascinated era we are looking for that handmade piece, the one-off that stands out. ‘Once you have decided which of the forms of art that you wish to buy, whether it’s hanging art, photography or sculpture, you need to work out what size of space that you have to work with. The benefit of attending an art fair, such as ours here in Aberdeen, is that you have so many styles, colours and sizes to choose from that you won’t have a problem finding the right piece to complement your décor. And, of course, don't be afraid to ask for advice and ask if you can take it home to see how it looks on the wall.’

MICHELLE HANDFORTH There can be few bigger challenges than taking the reins at Aberdeen Harbour Board whose turnover last year was more than ÂŁ32million. Top of the in-tray is the small matter of a ÂŁ350million investment to oversee but Michelle Handforth, the chief executive since February, exudes enthusiasm for the project, the construction of the new South harbour at Nigg Bay.
THE LAST WORD | 95
We meet in her spacious office overlooking the harbour from where the Hjaltland ferry for Shetland will leave at teatime. Understandably, her desk is well back from the sealed windows so she is not distracted by the comings and goings.
I just love this part of the world, what with the dazzling countryside and the proximity of the sea
A Mancunian, Michelle is a bit of a high flier, if you pardon the pun, having worked in aviation for 17 years and in rail transport. Latterly, she had a spell in Australia running the Sydney Ferries, one of the largest water services in the world, before being headhunted to a senior role in the offshore helicopter business in Aberdeen in April, 2015.
‘It is an honour and a privilege to be part of Britain’s oldest business, going back 900 years, but we must move with the times and create berthage for the biggest vessels, including cruise ships,’ she says. ‘Aberdeen will boast a unified port fit to be the biggest and best in the UK. We already have ships coming from 37 countries around the world but as they get bigger, so we have to be able to accommodate 300-metre vessels. To give you an idea of the scale of the operation, one of the new quays at the South harbour will be longer than the Titanic.’
Michelle is married and lives near Banchory with her husband and three stepsons. ‘I just love this part of the world, what with the dazzling countryside and the proximity of the sea. Visitors are staggered to see a harbour packed with vessels in the heart of the city.’
However, Michelle strikes a note of caution about this massive investment. ‘The stakes are high. We have taken out loans from the likes of the European Investment Bank, a bold move by our board who are part of the trust running the harbour.’
She is a keen skier but her golf does not match her abilities on the slopes. ‘I am a very bad golfer,’ she says. Heavens above, what is the world coming to when such a talented all-rounder as Michelle admits to a Scottish audience that she is well below par at something?
