team welcome
Welcome
Work on each issue of Trend kicks off almost as soon as the previous one hits the streets, so the whole team is involved in a lot of advance planning. The issue you hold in your hands was printed at the end of July and we start discussing and preparing content in the two months before printing. This sometimes leaves the team in a bit of a quandary, especially on fashion features and ideas on places to visit. With June and July being a complete wash out, should we risk looking at summer clothes, when anyone wearing shorts has teamed them up with cosy woollen tights and Uggs and when the shopping centres are thronged with people in Gore-tex? Should we be looking at outdoor pursuits or ways to pass a rainy afternoon with the kids? Fake tan or Sun protection? Festivals or indoor concerts? Hiking or Hibernation? In the end, we’ve opted for a mix, so whatever the weather, our pages are packed full of the latest fashion, beauty, places to go and things to do. And our exciting new development has us all buzzing...TREND Weddings...have a look on page 61 and let us know what you think...

So far, summer has been a bit of a washout, so we thought it might be time to give Mother Nature a helping hand with Trend’s round up of the most natural looking fake tanning products. We’re talking a gradually developed streak-free glow that doesn’t leave your skin or your sheets looking like you’ve been sponsored by Irn Bru. Green People’s new Self Tan with SPF 15 is scented with natural essential oils. This light, fast absorbing self tanning lotion is a great introduction to the first few days of holiday. With an SPF 15 you can speed up your tan whilst staying protected. It’s made using 78% certified organic products and contains Rosehip, Green Tea & Avocado, £13.50 for 100ml.
If you just want a quick fix for a special occasion then Holland & Barrett stock Tantastic, which promises to leave the skin fabulously bronzed, delicately moisturised and healthy. It’s 14
a progressive product, so you can opt for a sun-kissed look or suggest you’ve spent a month in the Maldives. Tan Laidbare lasts up to 3 days and works with your natural skin tone and at just £5.99, it won’t break the budget. Vita Liberata’s fans include Kelly Brook, a woman who seems to live in bikinis. Their tinted tanning range is perfect for tan novices, as it provides instant colour and a flawless finish. The guide colours are perfectly natural, dry instantly, and work alongside the active tanning ingredient DHA to ensure that even as your tan develops under the guide colour, you still look ‘naturally’ bronzed. Virtually odourless, each treatment contains a unique moisture-lock© complex, which leaves skin silky soft and delivers a perfect fade every time. Both body and face tans are available in the range, from £17.50 upwards. Glow for it!

Banish that Bounce For many women high intensity activities, such as running, can lead to excessive bounce, which ultimately causes tissue to stretch and sag. Therefore, it is vital that women who regularly exercise look after their prized assets whilst keeping fit. De-Zire of Inverurie has recently introduced a sleek and stylish range of Panache sports bras to it's stock, which are scientifically proven to banish the bounce during exercise, helping to keep breasts firmly in place.
Panache sportswear not only reduces breast bounce by up to 83% but lifts, shapes and supports whilst offering complete comfort during workouts. The range is available at De-Zire in four colours with cup sizes ranging from B-H. De-Zire’s fitting service caters for all shapes and sizes from 28-44 back and A-K cups. The boutique is an exclusive stockist of a number of other lingerie brands including Aubade, Lejaby, Lepel and Curvy Kate. 25 High Street, Inverurie AB51 3QA Tel 01467 670835 19

NORTH EAST PRIVATE RENTAL SECTOR CONTINUES TO GROW > WORDS BY Shona Morrison, Partner at Aberdein Considine Whilst the UK continues to suffer from harsh economic conditions, the impact on the Private Rented Sector (PRS) in Scotland has been a positive one. Since 1999 the PRS has more than doubled its share of housing stock – rising to 11% – and demand is expected to continue. In addition, the strength of the oil and gas related economy in the North East has an enormous impact with the major energy companies currently seeking to recruit 34
thousands of new employees, many at executive level. In our experience the initial preferred housing option of employees being relocated is private rented housing. This demand has been evidenced across our branch network and, in particular, our city centre and Upper Deeside offices. Such is the competition for quality executive flats that the time to secure a lease can typically be 48 hours, with an above average rental
achieved. The first quarter of this year has been particularly strong and as an example the average rent in Aberdeen for a typical 2 bed flat was £858 in Q1 of 2012 compared to £627 the same time last year. Given the excellent market conditions any prospective tenants or Landlords looking for advice should contact our Leasing Centre leasing@acandco.com

The rainy days haven’t managed to dampen spirits at Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) this summer. The north east of Scotland’s premier sports facility has played host to a number of exciting events including the Mini Olympics where local children were encouraged to embrace the excitement of the 2012 Olympics by getting involved in a variety of track and field activities at ASV’s indoor athletics facility.

It is extremely important to us that we can offer a dedicated facility which is open to everyone who wants to enjoy it.” The annual Denis Law Soccer Tournament was another highlight of the summer programme which ended with a fun-filled day of football, bouncy castles, an inflatable assault course and BBQ for the whole family.
The kids@asv initiative also saw almost 500 local children take part in a seven-a-side football tournament in the Hydrasun Kids Euro Cup.
ASV, along with RGU: SPORT, also played an important role as host to the Cameroon Olympic team this summer as they prepared for their 2012 campaign.
David Beattie, Chief Executive at Aberdeen Sports Village said: “Events like these are a fantastic example of how ASV is working to ensure that the young people of Aberdeen and the north east have the opportunity to
David Beattie added: “It was an amazing honour to be selected as a host for one of the international teams and a real testament to the quality of our facility, especially as only one other city in Scotland was chosen.”

The teams’ stay in the city ended with an international challenge match between the Scotland women's national football team and the Cameroon ladies team – the first international football game ever to be held at ASV. A major milestone in the construction of the new Aquatics Centre was also reached with the completion of the next stage of the 50 metre swimming pool and diving areas. The centre, which is on track for opening early 2014, will offer world-class swimming and diving facilities to both members of the local community and elite athletes. Their luxury portfolio includes one to three bedroomed flats in the city centre, Ferryhill, Dyce, Westhill, the West End and Cults, all of which enjoy the highest standards of interior decoration and housekeeping services. The Pitfodels properties are ideal for families using the International School and even the family pet is welcome at selected apartments. The apartments are perfect for short stay business trips or for accommodation for family or corporate events. Unlike a hotel, they really do offer a home from home, coming fully equipped with great kitchens, spacious bedrooms, luxury lounges, wi-fi and luxuriously appointed bathrooms. You can stay at any of Town & Country’s apartments from a single night to three months or longer, making them hugely popular with business and private customers. 36
The Town & Country service starts the moment you arrive in the city, with a pick up from the airport provided by Morag Adams and Allan Cruikshank who run the business. Morag is no stranger to making people feel welcome, as she previously ran the renowned Cock & Bull restaurant. She’s always happy to help you get to know the city and can advise on longer term house hunting, too. Not surprisingly, once people have enjoyed the Town & Country serviced apartment experience, they don’t want to give up the standard of comfort that the team provide. Allan and Morag have just started a sister company, Town and Country Leasing, which provides luxury properties for longer term rentals, with the same level of service and customer care.
Whatever your circumstances, Town & Country can offer quality accommodation in a prime location, for any duration. The Union Street branch may look small from the outside, but inside it’s a vast two-floor treasure box of well-curated pieces for every room, offset with a great choice of lighting, vases and decorative pieces. Holburn Street is great for gifts and accessories. Before I’d gone ten paces into the shop, I’d already found two things I loved and by the time I’d wandered round the entire selection, I’d seen so many brilliant buys that I was contemplating building an extension.

food review
Any excuse... Quad biking, off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting and fishing are all very well, but the real reason to drive out to the Deeside Activity Park is, in my opinion, for the food. More specifically, for the beef.
The on-site cafe and restaurant both serve only Cairnton Aberdeen Angus beef. It's some of the best I've ever eaten, and it’s so local you can practically see the cows outside the window. From October/November time, there is a weekly carvery in the restaurant - I went at the beginning of the year and the place was deservedly packed with people waiting not only for thick slices of the award winning beef, but also for the potatoes and vegetables that are sourced from nearby suppliers. The roasts do stop during the summer months (unless you want one for a special event) but the steaks and 42
burgers don’t, and they are certainly worth the drive. Last time I went I didn’t even need to see the menu, I went straight for the burger and sat impatiently for what I knew was coming – warm bun, sharp cheese, and a burger so tender you barely need to bite. Of course it would have been rude to leave without trying one of the homemade sweet options, and although the chocolate cake looked sticky and dark and like something straight out of Matilda, I went for a warm scone with strawberry jam, and I didn’t regret my choice for a moment.
Anytime I’ve eaten in either the restaurant or the cafe at the Deeside Activity Park, I’ve left thinking about when I’ll have an excuse to go back. So far I’ve stopped short of fabricating a special occasion and ordering a roast… but I can’t say it’ll never happen. Deeside Activity Park www.deesideactivitypark.com

THE SHIP INN, STONEHAVEN Since moving to Aberdeen 20 years ago, I have often been drawn to the seaside town of Stonehaven with its attractive harbour. Stonehaven has a great range of places to eat and commanding a prime harbour-side location is the Captains Table Restaurant at the Ship Inn.
Great views from the floor to ceiling windows add to the atmosphere which was buzzing on a Tuesday evening. It was service with a smile all the way. The menu is varied so you can opt for traditional fare or something a little different. Given the proximity of the sea, I couldn’t see past the seafood options so began with tasty crab cakes in a chilli and lime dressing followed by a trio of fish (seabass, lemon sole and salmon) in a dill cream sauce.
My teenage boys devoured a homemade burger with extra toppings and a deliciously tender steak and Guinness pie. There were plenty of tempting specials on the black board so my other half had the courgette and mint soup followed by an enjoyable and, as with all the dishes, generous portion of venison steak with braised red cabbage. Puddings were a shared affair with the cheesecake of the day (white chocolate and passion fruit) and a fab sundae glass full of Eton Mess.
Rain scuppered our planned after dinner stroll around the harbour but the warm welcome and good food made it a very enjoyable evening. Ship Inn 5 Shorehead Stonehaven Aberdeenshire AB39 2JY Tel: 01569 762617 www.shipinnstonehaven.com

Ian Fleming Head Chef, ROX Hotel

Where have you worked before heading up the team at rox? I was at Ardoe House hotel for three years and before that I was at Archiestown Hotel on Speyside and spent time at Butlers Wharf Chophouse and Daphines in London. Describe your own style of cooking. I try to take classical flavour combinations and update them using modern techniques and subtly alter some of the ingredients using local seasonal produce. How do you get a balance of great flavour with something that looks good on the plate? By carefully considering each ingredient, and
which processes and cooking methods can be used to enhance and harmonise the flavours to create an attractive plateable product. Where do you look for inspiration for new ideas? I look online to see what contemporary restaurants are doing globally, talk to suppliers about new produce coming to market and I try to eat out at new restaurants whenever possible. What’s your own favourite food? At home I cook with offal as i like the different flavours and textures and trying to get the most out of secondary cuts of meat. I am also happy to eat most things someone else has cooked.
And what won’t you eat? I am not keem on brussel sprouts or mangetout and I never eat fast food as it just doesn't appeal to me. What’s your opinion of very theatrical techniques such as those used by heston blumenthal or at noma? I think there is a place for all styles of cooking, however you need a certain clientele for that sort of operation. It is good that new techniques are being pioneered as they filter down to more mainstream establishments.

For romantic weddings, Logie’s the latest place If your dream wedding venue involves romance, a riverside lawn, a historical backdrop, a pristine marquee and an outstanding natural setting close to Aberdeen, then we may have found just the place! Logie House will be available as an exclusive wedding venue for up to 150 guests from May 2013. With an enviable setting at the foot of Bennachie, the house was built in the 1670s on estate lands purchased by Laurence Elphinstone in 1492. Originally a fortified tower house, extensive modifications took place during the 18th century, to give the magnificent house that lies on the banks of the river Urie at Pitcaple.
It may be under 20 miles from Aberdeen, but it really feels like you’re in your own private idyll. The combination of south facing lawns to the front of the house, a private island, ancient woodlands and Pictish standing stones that sit in the 140 acre grounds will spoil your photographer for choice. The woods are carpeted with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells in the spring and the estate is home to owls, red squirrels and roe deer. Guests can stay in the Estate’s luxury yurts, 5 star guest wing or in the main house itself and the number of activities available nearby would make it a perfect spot for both a relaxing or sporty wedding weekend. Even pets are welcome, so they needn’t miss out on the big day.
Larger receptions can take place in a marquee on the lawn or inside the main house for more intimate gatherings. Estate owner Tim Erbés team can arrange for top quality catering and everything the guests could wish for to make the day really special. Broadstraik cures the
summertime blues There’s nothing nicer than lazing on a sunny afternoon at a lovely old country pub with good company and great food. And though they can’t arrange the weather, it’s guaranteed there will always be a warm welcome at the Broadstraik Inn no matter how dire the summer. The historic coaching inn has been a favourite destination for decades, particularly popular with families looking for a quick escape from the city. And it’s stood the test of time – still one of the busiest pubs in the North-east,
especially when the sun does put in an appearance, bringing customers flocking to take advantage of the large, enclosed beer garden, complete with play area to keep the kids amused. But one of the best things about the Broadstraik, whatever the time of year, is the range of good food available all day long. From bar snacks through to lunch, dinner and the kids’ menu, everything is created using seasonal and, where possible, locally-sourced ingredients. The menus change every couple of months and offer a mouth-watering selection of traditional dishes – Cullen skink, steak
pie, crispy sweet chilli chicken – alongside pheasant with pearl barley and vegetable risotto, scallops and sea bass with minted pea puree or spiced vegetable and chickpea tagine with couscous. Then there are the usual pub favourites like fajitas and scampi or filled baked potatoes, wraps, burgers and omelettes for lunch. Only eight miles and a 20-minute drive from the centre of Aberdeen, the Broadstraik Inn, near Elrick, deserves a visit this summer. And you don’t have to wait for a sunny afternoon, the Broadstraik welcome will cure your summertime blues any day of the week. Once part of an elegant merchant’s house, 19a Rubislaw Terrace is now home to one of the city’s most stylish cafes. On a prime site overlooking lush gardens, PARX Cafe is tucked discreetly into the lower level and is the sort of contemporary but unpretentious venture the area was waiting for. Perfect for a pit stop en route to work, customers can pick up takeaway breakfasts – anything from fruit spiced porridge to coffee and croissants – collect a panini and soup or take time out for a sit-down lunch or meeting over a hot drink and homebakes. The premises have been completely refurbished in a signature palette of battleship grey and white. A continental style terrace at the entrance– a suntrap for optimistic al fresco diners – leads indoors to an airy space where light spills in from windows front and back. Furnished with reclaimed teak tables, benches and smart white chairs, the cafe stretches back to a rear garden area with more tables outside. The PARX cafe is owned by Philip Argo. The team is led by Kerry Milne and includes an expert barista serving coffees, teas and hot chocolate, a chef/baker producing fresh sandwiches made from artisan breads, deli, soups and patisserie. And on Wednesdays, a Korean chef creates authentic, fresh sushi. Open 8am – 4pm, Monday to Friday, PARX is a mouth-watering addition to the west end. PACK IT UP AND HEAD FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Getting away from it all sometimes involves taking an awful lot of it with you, as anyone who’s ever gone camping, has a family or just enjoys exploring the great outdoors will confirm
When you need to bring a truckload of toys, a baby buggy, seventeen pairs of shoes, six suitcases, four bikes, a tent, camp kitchen, airbeds, games consoles, iPads, phones and so much kit that the children are rendered immobile by piles of pillows, sleeping bags and enough food to feed a small European country for a month - it’s time to look at roof boxes and bike racks. Most roof boxes offer from 300-650 litres of luggage space and prices range from around £100 to £750. The brand new Thule Motion cargo box is great for people who need to transport a lot of, large or just bulky luggage. It’s designed to optimize space efficiency and easy handling, underlined with innovations such as Power-Click and Dual-Side opening. If you have a tow-bar, another option is a trailer, which offers the advantage of being 58
easy to load, but which makes parking traumatic. They are also expensive, ranging from about £300 to £2000 and may lead you to consider buying a touring caravan, so it may be best to stick with a roof box. If you’re the kind of family which is always on the go, then consider a cycle carrier. Rear mounted carriers are best for anyone wanting to transport more than two bikes at once, and can be used in combination with a roof box. The other option, which is fine as long as you are tall enough to manage it and always remember to avoid low bridges, is to mount your bikes on a roof carrier. Halfords offer a single bike model for under £20, but prices for multi-bike models equipped with LED lights go up to around £450. On second thoughts, maybe a nice city break for two?

Meet photographer Tony McGarva Native Aberdonian Tony McGarva may work as a Petroleum Engineer, but he’s happiest behind a camera lens, as his joyful images of the city prove. “I discovered my passion for photography during my teenage years when I used to borrow my father’s 35mm camera. Even at that early stage the ability to capture moments as stills intrigued me immensely,” Tony explained. “About five years ago I got more involved, teaching myself and taking workshops with Scottish professional landscaper Ian Cameron. He taught me the true meaning of transient moments. These are brief moments of sublime 60
light that can only last minutes, or even seconds, showing any subject in its true beauty. Getting out there time after time and having patience to wait for these moments is key to a successful image.” As might be expected from an engineer, a lot of meticulous preparation goes into Tony’s images. “It is all about capturing the correct light. The Photographers Ephemeris online informs me when the sun will rise and set, and importantly from what direction. The Met Office forecast is key as changeable conditions are more favourable for getting a dramatic shot.” Tony’s work can be purchased as high quality
giclee prints from his own website and he will be exhibiting a selection of new prints from around Scotland at the Inversnecky Café as part of the North East Open Studios event in September. His fans include Aberdeen City Council which has just purchased several of Tony’s images of the city to use for promotional work. “My photography is a change of pace from a busy life in the oil industry. It allows me artistic license to express myself through my lens. It is important to me to keep this enjoyment and not make taking images feel like a chore.” www.pbase.com/mcgarva

A Stitch in Time
Two years ago Gray’s graduate Jenny McHardy gave up her textile tutor post and a consultancy job with Rowan Yarns in London and came back to the city to launch Nervous Stitch, producing her own knitted textile interior products. Jenny’s range of hand crafted cushions, tea cosies and small products brings knitting up bang to date and is attracting orders from keen collectors all over the world.

“I have always designed and made things from a very early age, it was not a conscious thing it’s just what I was good at and enjoyed doing”, Jenny explained, “ I studied textiles and surface design at Gray’s followed by an MA at The Royal College of Art but knitting is a family thing for me. My mum knits and my granny knits. I remember I used to knit jumpers for myself when I was ten, I refused to use a knitting pattern as I thought this was cheating, so I just made them up as I went along. Now I have a two year old daughter to look after during the day, so I start work when she goes to bed. “With Nervous Stitches products I design and make things I would like to have myself in the hope that other people will love and want to buy my products. My best selling design is the fox terrier cushion followed closely by the rabbit design. Presently most of my products go overseas with most Nervous Stitch products going to the USA, but I have products going to all corners of the globe, including Scotland! “I get inspiration from anything and everything, I have a notebook and camera I carry with me at all times, I often go to bed and wake up with my sketchbook and pen by my head, I even dream new designs and products.
Many of Jenny’s designs are inspired by memories of childhood, making an emotional connection with her buyers and Jenny hopes that her work will be handed down to future generations as heirlooms. All the lamb’s wool Jenny uses comes from spinners in Scotland or Yorkshire, as she explained, “I believe people want now want to invest in products that have a story and heritage instead of buying mass produced soulless goods made in China”. It takes Jenny around three days to produce each cushion cover, making them remarkably good value, as well as something that will be treasured for generations to come. Jenny’s designs can be bought from her shop on Etsy at www.etsy.com/shop/ nervousstitch Other stockists include: www.papastour.com and www.luxuryhound.com and Holburn Street’s Junction Arts and Crafts. Hammerton stores on Aberdeen’s Great Western Road also stock a selection of Jenny’s tea cosies. Jenny would be happy to discuss commissions or projects and can be contacted at Jennifer.mchardy@network.rca.ac.uk 63

What a feeling Transformed from a smoky steel town to an increasingly modern and sophisticated city, Pittsburgh is ranked as one of the USA’s most liveable cities with tourism growing fast. It is a mecca for Hollywood movie makers and features in many box office blockbusters.

The gateway through the Fort Pitt tunnel is spectacular, especially at night. No other city has an entrance quite like this that just opens up and reveals itself. Home of the two Andy’s (Warhol and Carnegie), Pittsburgh has lots to offer from its world-class museums and galleries to parks, year-round sporting events and a cultural district that rivals many other major cities. Built between and around three rivers it is a collection of distinct neighborhoods. Downtown is easily navigated and has a stunning mix of architecture. You’ll find the Cultural District here where contemporary art is given a leading role and adventurous works can be found nestling in public spaces beside Heinz Hall (home to Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) and the Benedum Theatre.
Shayside and Southside’s East Carson Street is where to go boutique shopping. The famous Pittsburgh Jeans Company offers a unique shopping experience in a beautifully restored building with quirky customer extras and great jeans. The Big Chief Jeans Co is the brain child of Pittsburgher James Houk who has Hollywood celebrities dying for his denim and a forthcoming NYC showroom. "The Warhol" is a must see, located on the North Shore. It’s the largest single-artist museum in the US and is chock-full of Warhol originals and other exhibitions. Pittsburgh’s sports stadiums are truly spectacular: Heinz Field is home to 6-times Superbowl Champions the Steelers; the Penguins take the ice at Consol Energy and the Pirates PNC Park offers the most picturesque backdrop in baseball. A trip up the Duquesne
Incline to Mount Washington offers the best panoramic views of the city. Oakland is where you’ll find the Cathedral of Learning, Schenley Park, Frick Conservatory and Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History. The Strip District is packed with outdoor markets, pass a morning with breakfast ‘diner-style’ at Pamela’s, browse the market produce then visit the Heinz museum. Tasty restaurants are scattered throughout the city, Bar Marco is great for casual dining and cocktails, Kevin Sousa’s collection includes Salt-of-The-Earth and sophisticated nightspots include Bosa Nova. Pittsburghers are proud of its steely past and a visit will leave you with a great feeling.

Lunan Bay Long, sandy beaches aren't something people really associate with the northeast. Everybody knows about Balmedie, which is why you often find half of Aberdeen at Balmedie.
> WORDS BY KATE GRAY
Next time you’re planning a trip to the beach though, head south, not north, and – three miles past Montrose – you’ll find the long, pristine, and often deserted stretch of sand that is Lunan Bay.
Lunan Bay was the scene of Viking landings in the eleventh century, Covenanter attacks in the sixteenth century, and a violent siege at the beginning of the seventeenth century that saw it razed almost to the ground.
This type of fishing is a dying tradition, and Lunan Bay is one of a few places where it still happens. It’s an intricate set-up, and when you watch the nets being hauled in, it’s easy to understand why some people visit just to see the old method in practice.
The beach is backed by low dunes, and cliffs at the north and south of the bay mean that it feels pleasantly cut off from the world. The ruined remains of the twelfth century Red Castle – once owned by Robert the Bruce – overlook the beach, hinting at the lively history of the site.
Thankfully though, today the bay is peaceful, attracting kayakers, walkers and horse riders, rather than raiding parties and armies. The beach is, however, still dotted with nets draped from poles and staked into the sand, ready to trap fish as the tide shifts.
70
Lunan Bay, then, is a beach that certainly doesn’t need sun to be interesting. Even on a cloudy day, the nets will be out, the sand will be white, the odd (huge) jellyfish will be washed up, and it will still be the place where Vikings landed and the Covenanting armies fought.

Kicking Back Until recently, the closest I had come to kickboxing was watching Jean-Claude van Damme avenge his brother in the movie Kickboxer in the 1980s. Fortunately, my recent visit to Sansum Black Belt Academy in Stonehaven brought me closer to this relatively young martial art. SBBA Stonehaven is run by Sensei Malcolm Evans, who has been training aspiring kickboxers in the area for the past two years. I visited Malcolm, a kickboxing champion in his own right, only days after the opening of his brand new dedicated dojo, where students as young as three years old train alongside world champions. For those looking to enter the world of martial arts, kickboxing seems a
great place to start. The techniques of this hybrid sport seamlessly combine elements of karate, tae kwon do and kung fu into a fast-paced choreography of kicks and punches, with as little or as much contact as you desire. Apart from the obvious benefits to your fitness, a few swings at the stand-alone punchbags provide an unmatched source of stress relief at the end of a long day. If the striking uniforms and padded shoes don’t hook you instantly, the atmosphere of dedication, passion and commitment will. It doesn’t take long to see that kickboxing is as much something that you are as something that you do. So contagious is the enthusiasm of Sensei Malcolm, even his mother has become a champion under his skilled guidance.
In addition to kickboxing, SBBA Stonehaven also offers personal and occupational self protection courses and is hoping to introduce boxercise and other fitness classes to the new studio. Whether you’re looking to compete, improve your fitness, or just want to try a new sport in a supportive environment, I recommend a visit to Stonehaven where, in the words of Sensei Malcolm, ‘the journey is your own.’ Visit SBBA Stonehaven on Facebook or call 07769 266 994 www.sansumkickboxing.com 71

GET A GREAT NIGHT’S SLEEP WITH GLENCRAFT
We spend around a third of our lives in bed, dreaming, sleeping, reading the Sunday papers, breakfasting, snuggling or being used as a trampoline by small children, so a great mattress is an essential buy. Experts advise that we should change our mattresses every five years, so head to Glencraft at East Tullos for the best selection of beds in town. The quality is second to none, the prices are competitive and you can buy a great product that’s been made by incredibly skilled workers right here in the city, whilst supporting a local charity and social enterprise. Not only does the modern showroom have a great selection of well designed and made beds on offer, it also stocks several attractive

furniture ranges and original artworks to give the perfect finishing touch to your bedroom. From autumn, Glencraft will stock Inverurie’s Interiors by Ashley luxury products including the exclusive Riverdale range. Glencraft makes around 7,000 beds each year for homes and some of the country’s leading hotels. They control every aspect of the production process and supply chain, ensuring that their products are made from the finest materials to the highest of standards. They supply their beds to five star hotels including Gleneagles and The Marcliffe at Pitfodels and even hold a Royal Warrant - and as everyone who has read the Princess and the Pea knows, only the finest mattresses will do for royalty! Stewart Spence, owner of The Marcliffe is a fan, saying, “We choose to use Glencraft beds because of the high quality and service, as well ensuring local jobs are maintained in such a great organisation.” You can tour the factory and get an understanding of how your bed or mattress will be made. The craftsmen and women are amazing to watch. Each of the springs that goes into a Glencraft mattress is individually
created at the factory, before being bound together and covered with layers of different materials according to which mattress is being produced. Staff whizz round fixing fabric to divan bases, fixing buttons and making headboards. Glencraft has a long history of bed-making expertise dating from when the organisation started back in 1843 as the Royal Workshops for the Blind. Now the company functions as a stand-alone social enterprise that provides employment for over forty people, around three quarters of whom have either a sight-related disability or another form of disability and would otherwise struggle to find employment. When we visited we loved the range of 14 different mattresses to suit all budgets and Glencraft’s bespoke service which can provide mattresses to fit antique bedsteads or make extra long beds for the very tall, for example. The showroom staff have many years experience of finding the right mattress to suit individual needs and an infectious enthusiasm for their company and products, promising “a good bed made better”. If you do need a new bed or mattress, make Glencraft’s modern showroom your first port
of call. You’ll be buying a locally made, top quality product at a fair price and providing training opportunities for a new generation of craftsmen. Sweet dreams are made of this! 132 Wellington Road East Tullos, Aberdeen AB12 3LQ Open: Monday -Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, Saturday 10.00am to 5.00pm, Sunday 11.00am to 4.00pm T: 01224 873366 E: info@glencraft.co.uk www. glencraft.co.uk Here’s your chance to win a great night’s sleep thanks to Glencraft and The Marcliffe at Pitfodels. High fashion with Sheila.
> words by PETER MITCHELL
Walking arm in arm down Turriff’s sunkissed Main Street with the petite and engaging fashionista Sheila Gammie is an educational experience. We have just left the Celebrations Ladieswear emporium where she is buyer and personal shopper to have lunch in the company’s restaurant and coffee parlour across the road in the big Celebrations shop . And for starters I discover she grew up on the farm at Dunscroft, near Huntly, and became a primary school teacher after qualifying at the Northern College of Education in Aberdeen . Sheila’s first post in 1975 was at the newly-opened Kellands Primary in Inverurie, 90
followed by stints at Fyvie and Turriff. She married a farmer, surprise, surprise, and they had a son, Peter, and daughter, Victoria.
However, the fashion world beckoned and Sheila opened her own wee shop in Turriff, graduating to places as diverse as Aberdeen, Gleneagles and Glasgow before giving up in 2006. “Believe it or not, I apply the same principles to my customers as I did for my young charges,” she says. “I tried to get the best out of my pupils and I try to bring out the best in my ladies. They come in all shapes and sizes and from as far away as Shetland and south of the border. We are also lucky to be smack in the middle of Aberdeenshire.”
Sheila won’t be drawn on any of her VIP customers but she must be doing something right with her personal service as she won the elite fashion retailer category at last year’s Trend awards night. Her life now is spent with another farmer who happens to be another Peter. For his part, he has a son called, yes, you’ve guessed, Peter, and another son Bruce. I enjoyed my mince and tatties in the restaurant, the fourth Peter in Sheila’s day, and as she walked me to my car, I wondered as men have wondered through the ages. How do women manage to walk with fourinch heels?
