David Lloyd Clubs Aberdeen member Gary Corbett has been playing tennis at the club for almost 10 years. A busy company director he receives regular coaching from the Adult Tennis Professional who he calls Mark 'Peter Pan' Malcolm. We asked Gary about his time playing tennis at David Lloyd Clubs Aberdeen: WHY DID YOU TAKE UP TENNIS? I was getting too old to play football so I decided it was time for a non-contact, but still competitive sport! My first step was the David Lloyd tennis welcome with Mark at the club.
played before I joined David Lloyd. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR INDIVIDUAL STYLE OF TENNIS IS? Unorthodox, many people say very annoying. Lots of running, chasing and getting balls back. HOW HAS TENNIS HELPED YOU IN OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE? Tennis keeps me fitter than I would be and helps me relax and de-stress.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING
HOW HAS YOUR TENNIS COACH HELPED YOU IMPROVE YOUR GAME? Mark has made various fine-tuning and constructive coaching adjustments over the years.
ABOUT PLAYING AT DAVID LLOYD ABERDEEN? It’s a great social opportunity for me. I’ve made some quality friends; I love a good run around and it doesn’t feel like exercising when you are chasing a ball. I seem to be improving given that I hadn’t really
WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO GET INTO TENNIS? Go for it. Keep at it and you will get better. Try and play people better than you to improve even if you get a hiding to start.

The Scottish summer, like third marriages, is often a triumph of hope over experience. No matter how many dull, damp days we experience, we hope that each summer will bring an endless vista of gloriously warm weather, filled with simple pleasures, lazy al fresco meals, floaty dresses, sunblock-striped children running in and out of the garden sprinklers and a soporific air of wellbeing and contentment. While we might hope for an enchanted summer, this time of year is all about making the best of what we have. There’s so much to do, so many places to explore, so much heritage and history, so many festivals and events, that we can forgive the odd shower or particularly unseasonal hailstorm.

Take the time to reconnect with the world about you, to enjoy the simple things in life: the things that really matter. Spend time with family and friends, try something new, treat yourself to a day out, a picnic or fish and chips at the seaside, or perhaps a bit of pampering or a new purchase or two. It is approaching the time of year that many people dread, as whilst most of us can enjoy a summer barbeque, one in three will suffer the effects of being in contact with air borne grass and tree pollens and certain spores. ‘Hayfever’ or seasonal allergic rhinitis can make life miserable as summer months approach. Typical symptoms of rhinitis may include: • Sneezing. • runny nose and nasal congestion. • Itchy nose, eyes and/or palate. • Symptoms tend to be on both sides and are worse on waking. These symptoms can affect work, home and social life. In children and adolescents, symptoms can affect their schoolwork and cause sleep problems which is particularly worrying around exam times. INVESTIGATIONS First, an electronic questionnaire is sent out, and depending on the responses, further tests are indicated:
'I am really pleased with the result I have had from Kenalog I have been cycling without any problems and I can now no longer use my hayfever as an excuse not to cut the grass! One my husband takes great delight in telling me!!’ SKIN PRICK TESTING A small drop of allergen is placed on your forearm and a lancet used to ‘scratch’ the skin, a weal will develop if an allergy exists. Evidence from controlled trials shows the high sensitivity and specificity of skin tests. Skin prick testing is an important mechanism for identifying allergens so that avoidance measures can be introduced. BLOOD TESTS A range of blood tests are also available for adults where skin prick testing is inappropriate and children under 2 years old. We operate a comprehensive allergy treatment program beginning with reviewing current medication and assessing use of nasal spays. If an allergy is severe and having a negative effect on your daily routine then we can discuss complex desensitisation. We have also been using the intra-muscular steroid injection Kenalog for seasonal allergies which needs to be given when your hayfever starts to flare up. The injection may be used in patients aged 16 years and above on the advice of a doctor. Our GP will assess and prescribe this if appropriate to do so. Call 0333 0143488 or email allergy@ theaberdeenclinic.co.uk for more information.

Let a theme fine tune your big event In the hands of an experienced wedding and events company, a theme can create that extra bit of magic on the big day. Today, themes are not just for children’s parties! This year at Fairytale we are working on several themed weddings and events. No fancy dress, no over-the-top props, just flowers, linen, colour pops and motifs to hint at your favourite location, film or character. We used silver sequin cloths to represent fish scales and shades of shimmering turquoise and blue linen for an under-the-sea themed dinner.
A low-key wedding at a harbour location used shades of blue in flowers, bespoke menus, quirky favours and a menu including fish, chips and ice cream to recreate childhood memories of the seaside. Steampunk is big news in 2017 - and we brought that vision to life at a prestigious dinner dance with Victoriana table centrepieces and careful use of heritage colours. So, with a little help from experts, it’s time to let your imagination run wild and create an event to remember. 70 Ardarroch Rd, Aberdeen AB24 5QS Tel: 01224 639937 fairytale-events.eu

TREND TRIES After a busy weekend of shopping and merriment, the cosy and relaxed atmosphere of the Ferryhill House Hotel was just the place for some much-needed R&R and good home-style cooking.
FOOD & DRINK | 45
'...the hearty chicken roast was a sight to behold. '
Situated in leafy Ferryhill, just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, the Ferryhill House Hotel has long been a popular dining haunt for families looking for an afternoon meal with the kids, friends enjoying a chilled-out afternoon with glass of wine over lunch, or couples enjoying date night in the newly refurbished restaurant’s ambient conservatory. The restaurant offers a diverse and varied menu, with good hearty food for the traditional foodies; wholesome fare including Sunday roast, macaroni and cheese, and steak and Guinness pie. And for those who like their dishes with a bit of a twist, the chilli bowl, coconut chicken, and lamb rogan josh will keep the taste buds buzzing. Now the words ‘curry’ and ‘soup’ are not usually nouns I’d put together, but the smells emanating
from the kitchen enticed my taste buds to give the starter a try. Thick and rich, with only a hint of a little kick, it was very pleasing on the palate of a somewhat fussy eater. Returning to more traditional fare, the hearty chicken roast was a sight to behold. With al dente vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, perfectly prepared roast potatoes, and succulent, melt in your mouth chicken, it was all the gastronomic fun of a Spring-time Christmas. After such a culinary feast, I was sufficiently filled to the brim, but I felt it would have been downright rude not to at least try one of their light and fluffy sticky puddings. It was a tough job, but someone’s got to do it, and the Ferryhill House Hotel was the perfect place for the task.

This drink is a twist on a grasshopper, originally created in New Orleans in the late 19th Century. The original drink is a mix of mint and chocolate liqueurs, plus milk and cream. New Orleans to Home is a boozier drink with the addition of tequila, but also 'sustainable' and approachable for guests with dairy allergens. The mint stem cordial is an attempt at using disposables that would otherwise go to waste, and the almond milk is substituted instead of the dairy products. orchidaberdeen.com

Herbs have got to be one of the easiest plants to grow and with the most versatile of uses. You can grow them outdoors in containers, create a knot garden using box hedging or a potager. Indoors, a simple windowsill in the sun will do, where they can grow for longer than if they were outdoors. They can be grown for their flower, or their flavour and often have therapeutic uses toward health and healing. As long as you have access to sunshine, shelter and water you have the possibility of growing these wonderfully scented plants almost anywhere and where they are grown outdoors they attract bees. Here’s a list of useful herbs that grow here in the North-east of Scotland and their various uses.

On the Prosecco Trail in the Veneto rosecco: the word itself conjures up images of sipping the well-known Italian white wine in the sun. A versatile and luxurious aperitif, prosecco has become the go-to decadent drink for wine lovers. So much so, that reports were rife last year of a potential prosecco shortage, with demand far outstripping supply. Best then, to get to know this popular drink before it’s too late, and where better to get to know the many tastes of prosecco than in the beating heart of the prosecco motherland – the Veneto region.

Prosecco wineries are in abundance here, with row upon row of vineyards with their green and luscious grapes. Here in the Veneto, they pride themselves on producing DOCG prosecco, a symbol of the highest quality prosecco, produced and taste tested under the strictest of regulations and grape restrictions. DOC prosecco is perhaps its more famous sister, produced ubiquitously throughout Italy, but

— If you are fortunate enough to live in Aberdeen, participating should not present a challenge but, make no mistake, the rowing most certainly will. —
Rowing is one of many Olympic sports that is so elegant in its execution and so mastered by its worldclass competitors, it compels you to give it a try and, quite erroneously, convinces you that it is going to be easy. If you are fortunate enough to live in Aberdeen, participating should not present a challenge but, make no mistake, the rowing most certainly will. Many will have tried their hand at rowing on a machine in a loud, steamy sports centre but only when you find yourself gliding over the calm waters of the River Dee in the wee hours of the morning, with a crisp breeze drying the sweat on your brow, will you know its true power. This is a sport that benefits you mentally almost as much as it does physically. If you have spent any time walking the banks of the Dee, you will have encountered the characterful boat houses of the local rowing clubs, but you may not have realised just how welcome you would be made to feel in them. The Aberdeen Boat Club, established over 150 years ago, runs regular Novice Nights and hosts an annual Inter-Company Regatta, a competition between local businesses which is already in its 33rd year. The Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association welcomes recreational and competitive members up to age 19 and, through its Wet and Dry Start school programmes, has succeeded in getting a large number of budding young athletes hooked on the sport. At University level, University Rowing Aberdeen supports rowers from both University of Aberdeen and RGU, whether they are looking for a leisurely weekly paddle or wish to compete internationally. If your only experience of rowing has been watching the graceful boats as they slice through the water in perfectly straight lines across your television screen, you would be doing yourself a favour by coming down to the River Dee and trying it for yourself.

In 1843, a disgruntled band of zealous ministers took umbrage with the Church of Scotland and ultimately decided to part ways in a mass walkout that came to be known as The Disruption. They would go on to form the Free Church of Scotland, a Protestant denomination with a sizeable following, creating an urgent need for new church buildings in which to worship. And suddenly the skyline of Aberdeen was graced with one of its most iconic structures.

Only the East Church has fully survived, having been remodelled in 1900 and again in 1965 and today being home, ironically, to one of the city’s most popular pubs and nightclubs. The brick-clad tower, a defining feature on the face of the city, remains standing but is vulnerable to further deterioration if restoration measures are not taken. The Triple Kirks were rumoured to have been erected in a matter of weeks, using readily available and inexpensive materials, including reclaimed red brick which dresses the stillstanding spire, producing a striking contrast in a city of granite. The structure was so named as it was the only Scottish church built to accommodate three separate congregations the East, South and West United Free Churches. Over the years and through a series of
There have been various proposals to convert the ruins of the Triple Kirks over the past twenty-five years, with plans for everything from office blocks to a heritage centre, but none has thus far come to fruition. The latest design will see the ruins converted to much-needed student accommodation in the heart of the city, with the spire remaining prominently at the centre. With luck, refurbishment of some kind will take place before Aberdeen loses an

RGU Students produce digital fashion show A group of third year RGU Fashion Management students has produced and curated an exciting digital fashion show called Fashion: Undefined. The students were responsible for creating the content and coordinating every aspect of production: from choosing the clothes and models, to spending three weeks in the editing suite, painstakingly fine-tuning the video frame by frame and matching the images to the soundtrack music.
we wear every day, is one of the film’s most interesting and strongest visual themes.
The professional quality show is in three parts, each outlining the part fashion plays in culture, creativity and business, as it reworks and rampages through history, music and art appropriating and constantly remaking ideas in fabric form. The contrast between this wild creative and cultural side of fashion, and the toned down relationship that the constraints of business bring to the clothes

For a short film, it’s a remarkable piece

The theme is also a challenge with different perspectives of fashion to be considered and communicated through the film’.
of work, especially given that most of the students had no prior experience in video production or managing a project of this complexity. The course provides students with real-world transferrable digital, creative and business skills including teamwork, organisation and project management, so it’s not too surprising that several of those involved have been offered summer work in the digital field.
Student Ciara Boyle added, ‘Our aim was to encompass vibrancy, fluidity, detail and the art of telling a story, into one digital fashion show. The project, and the way it is led by students and guided by lecturers, shows how Fashion Management at RGU is continuously keeping up to date with the evolving fashion industry, and is the perfect way to prepare us students with the vital digital skills which are increasingly important to this area of business.’
The students also produced an endearingly frivolous Making of Fashion: Undefined behind the scenes documentary, which shows just how much hard work went into the making of the main project and how enjoyable the process was. You can see the film for yourself at rgu.ac.uk/digitalfashionshow

Hassled parents all know that sometimes there’s a lot to be said for the respite offered by giving a child a tablet to play with, or plonking them down in front of the TV. However, there’s only so many episodes of Dora the Explorer or Paw Patrol you can take before you lose your grip on reality. When you need to keep the kids engaged and entertained while having a few moments to yourself, then remote control toys fit the bill.
KIDS | 87
oyologist Peter Jenkinson explains, 'Far from stopping children developing imaginative play, remote control toys help develop hand-eye co-ordination skills and motor skills. They also help foster an early interest in science and engineering and kids get a lot of pleasure from emulating something their mum or dad does, like driving. 'They are also a good choice for shared, competitive, imaginative play. It’s like controlling a live-action animation. Kids make up elaborate stories to go with the action. 'Choosing the right remote control toy is important. Sometimes dads, in particular, end up buying a big boys toy instead of something to suit their toddler. If you buy a fast remote control car or drone for a child under the age of 11 or 12, it’ll end up repeatedly crashing into walls or furniture, or nosediving leaving you with expensive repairs or a pile of wreckage. Remote control toys also offer an insight into the future, when many jobs will be performed by robots, meaning an early introduction to mechanised toys

Here’s our pick of some of the best remote control toys on the market: Teksta have introduced adorable mini versions of their much-loved ROBOPETS. This kitty zooms around, makes realistic cat noises and responds to touch. £9.99 each and also available as a puppy, racoon and dinosaur. One for older kids, the new GEOSMART™ is a range of magnetic construction sets that combines bright colours with outstanding safety. Try the remote controlled Mars Explorer kit, which contains 51 pieces, 2 motors, a transmitter and receiver. £59.99 from Amazon. Chicco, the pre-school toy specialists, have ROBOCHICCO, which is the first ever transformable remote controlled car
MY FIRST FLYER from Little Tikes is the only drone for preschool kids that flies, turns and lands with one-touch control. It’s robust, easy to fly and maintains a height of three feet, though it’ll go higher if you place your hand under the sensor. It’s probably wrong to tell them it’s because you can do magic. £34.99. Another drone, but definitely designed for older kids, the AURA GLOVE CONTROL DRONE dispenses with fiddly controllers, knobs and joysticks in favour of a control glove that lets you tilt and rotate your hand to fly it. Tons of fun for around £80. Last up, how about a remotely controlled inflatable TELETUBBY? Sure to be a big hit with small children and more than a few adults. Bladz Toys does a whole range of character based inflatables, so there’s bound to be a superhero to suit. omen’s football, the fastestgrowing sport in the world, is attracting an increasing number of players in Northeast Scotland. One of the city’s newest clubs, Granite City Ladies, entered the scene in style last season, winning every league game in SWFL Division 2 North. With a squad of 28 girls, ranging in ages from 15 to 26, Granite City Ladies FC are sponsored by Lister Domestic Appliance Engineers, Dron & Dickson and Granite City Events.
Meanwhile in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup, Granite City are through to the second round having beaten Dundee United and Dundee. The ladies are also making their mark off the pitch with the younger players having just sat National 5 and Higher exams and the older ones either studying at university or involved in a variety of professions from teaching to nursing and physiotherapy.
As guests at the Cove Rangers FC Dinner recently, three of the squad were fortunate enough to meet guest speaker, Freddie Flintoff, who seemed more than happy to pose for a photograph with the stunning trio. Captain, Vikki McIntee, who runs her own business, Bajolo Beauty, in Inverurie said, 'It’s not exactly glamorous with shin guards and hair scraped back, especially when you come off the pitch dead-tired and soaked through. But we all love the game, playing for each other and improving our skills. With training two nights a week and a game every Sunday, our fitness is key. And off the pitch it’s normal girls stuff, getting dressed up for a night out and a prosecco or two!'
As the 2017 season approaches its half-way mark, Granite City Ladies are in a strong position in Division 1 North. Last month, they had a convincing win over Inverness City, who until then were the undefeated
