team welcome

Welcome

We’re celebrating our fifth birthday with this issue. We deserve some champagne, but we’ve been too busy to pop a cork or two. When we started, some people thought that there simply wasn’t enough to see or do in North-east Scotland to keep a magazine like Trend going. Well, in the past five years, we’ve quadrupled the number of copies we produce and we now have a lot more pages, packed with the latest fashions, people, places, activities and competitions. Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is a vibrant, interesting place to live and we’re dedicated to bringing you the best it has to offer. That’s not all we’ve been up to. We’ve been struck by wedding fever and have been planning and preparing to launch our new Trend Weddings magazine, which will be published twice a year and for our first ever Trend Weddings event on October 28th. If you’re getting married, then join us at the Marcliffe Hotel & Spa where around sixty handpicked exhibitors will show you the most stylish options for everything from flowers to invitations. There will be live demonstrations, a stunning catwalk designer fashion show and champagne and cupcakes, too. Check out page 83 for more details...It could save you a lot of legwork. Best regards,

Everyone at Trend x

LEATHER DRESS, PHASE EIGHT

HELL FOR LEATHER This season is all about leather, but doing it differently. Forget statement bags and grungy biker jackets and focus on the softer, casual side that we rarely associate with leather. Why not try mixing up your winter wardrobe with a pair of leather trousers, a soft leather peplum top or a pair of luxurious leather gloves.

> WORDS BY LIBBY KEILLER 26

For the not-so-brave among us, look for more subtle leather details and highlights such as collars or pockets, this can accentuate an otherwise basic wardrobe item. Try a leather waistband on a tailored skirt or trouser, or choose a cosy knit with gorgeous leather sleeves as the perfect way to stay well on trend without going overboard. This trend is about versatility, being able to wear leather for any occasion, day or night. Be sure to avoid animal prints and scarlet lips while wearing your leather to ensure you’re looking trendy rather than trashy.

Sift through any woman’s jewellery box and you’ll find a treasure trove of memories, pieces that encapsulate a time and a place – a snapshot of personal history. Some will hold an enduring beauty down the generations. Others will have become outdated, a little tired, even unloved. But instead of languishing unworn, no matter how sentimentally significant, many such pieces are being transformed, by Aberdeen jewellers McCalls, in an inspired surge of upcycling. Everything from broken earrings and necklaces to unfashionable rings and unwanted heirlooms are being brought in to be

remodelled into unique, bespoke and very wearable new pieces. “It always starts with some kind of story like ‘I got this from my grandmother or my mother’s grandmother’, explains store manager and designer, Aubin Stewart. “Then you get to hear the interesting tale behind it.” In consultation with the client she’ll produce several designs with the final choice being crafted by commission jeweller Nicole Ferguson, an Orcadian who trained with world renowned Orkney jewellers Ola Gorie and Sheila Fleet. The whole process usually takes about six weeks. Bangles are popular, often incorporating precious stones from a selection of melted

down gold items. Rings can be remodelled and re-set or a new heirloom created, perhaps from the wedding rings of both husband’s and wife’s grandmother, fusing the family histories together. “Clients tell us what they would like and we make it happen,” said Aubin, a Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art graduate. “We’ve got a brilliant, experienced team who love creating beautiful designs. And it’s amazing and pretty special to see something new come out of something old.” McCalls Jewellery

A friendly approach to separation

By Ruth Aberdein, Family Law Partner at Aberdeen-based leading law firm Aberdein Considine

“With more people aiming to resolve the issues arising from the breakdown of relationships amicably, awareness of the options available for handling such important matters is crucial. Alternative methods of dispute resolution, such as Collaborative Family Law and Mediation, allow separating couples to retain more control over their future, rather than becoming embroiled in protracted negotiations or having Courts impose sometimes unwelcome decisions upon them. Collaborative Family Law is a solution-orientated method where the parties separating are 34

encouraged to work together, with their Solicitors, to find practical solutions to suit their particular family circumstances. The Mediation process differs from Collaborative Law, as the Solicitor/Mediator does not represent either party. The role is an impartial one, with the Mediator assisting separating couples in achieving a peaceful and constructive resolution to a variety of family conflicts and disputes. Sometimes Court action is inevitable, but it is important that clients are aware that there are alternatives. At Aberdein Considine, our Family Law team specialises in the full range of methods of dispute resolution and can advise on the most appropriate course of action to suit the individual.” For further information, please contact the Aberdein Considine Family Law team on 01224 337471 or email raberdein@acandco.com

FOOD AND DRINK

I grew up in a traditional seaside resort and still find it hard to resist the aromas of fish and chips. Hornblower’s Fish and Chip Restaurant and Takeaway is in a great location at the working harbour of Gourdon (a mile south of Inverbervie) and as we drove down to the harbour, those aromas were calling me. > REVIEW BY CAROL BROWN

There’s a chipper for takeaways downstairs. Upstairs, the restaurant is decorated with wooden floors and pale tones and a wall featuring many photos relating to the fishing heritage of the town. Floor to ceiling windows on two sides maximise those panoramic views across the harbour and out to sea. The main menu is traditional chipper fare with daily specials which change according to what’s in season and what is available at the local fish merchants just a few yards away. The menu also features burgers and salads including local crab and hot smoked salmon (smoked just moments away). I chose one of the day’s specials 42

rock turbot, which was fresh and chunky and came encased in a light and crispy batter with excellent chips and mushy peas. The deep fried haddock and steak pie across the table were equally tasty. Both restaurant and takeaway were busy mid week and it’s easy to see why, from the warm welcome

to the great food, Hornblower’s Restaurant is a very good reason to venture down the coast road. Hornblower’s West Quay Gourdon Tel 01561 360111 www.horn-blowers.com

THE Prime Cuts A CUT ABOVE > REVIEW BY CLARE FINDLAY

The Prime Cuts Steak & Lobster House has been a haven for carnivores since 2007. The service is a cut above with knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff complementing the warm, cosy environment. Spread over two floors, The Prime Cuts pays tribute to the classic New York steak & lobster restaurants with a modern and stylish twist. Starting in the aptly named Upstairs Wine Bar, surrounded by candles and glowing lamps illuminating the soft seating areas and high bar stools, we deliberated over the cocktail menu before settling on a traditional Vodka Martini (shaken not stirred) and a Cosmopolitan. They also offer

a huge selection of spirits and what must be one of the largest ranges of well-priced wines by the glass in the city. The chilled out atmosphere meant it was almost an intrusion when our waiter arrived to chaperone us downstairs to the restaurant. The Prime Cuts warmly decorated dining area was busy with a mix of business folk, couples and groups of friends, making for a convivial, unstuffy atmosphere. An eager and knowledgeable waiter arrived with a canapé dish of cute mini meat pies, happy to guide us through the menu and wine list. Our starters were Beef Satay strips and Scallops with crispy Spanish Seranno

Ham - delicious would be an understatement. For the main course, we recommend the Surf & Turf – a 5 oz prime cut fillet sprinkled with redcurrant and rosemary jus accompanied by a portion of grilled lobster. The Herb Crusted Rack of Inverurie Lamb complete with smoked garlic dauphinoise potatoes approached perfection. It was difficult to save room for dessert; however the temptation of a shared Glazed White Chocolate Creme Brûlée was all too much. CHEF FOCUS

Sam Ritchie Commis Chef @ Raemoir House Hotel

Q&A’s What made you decide to be a chef? My passion for cooking, working with and trying different flavour combinations and also the challenge, working at my best consistently day in and day out Describe your cooking style? Fresh, modern and simple If you invited a famous person from history, literature, film etc to dinner, who would it be, why and what would you eat? It would have to be John Candy because he was my favourite actor when I was a child. To eat we would have a nice piece of braised feather blade Where do you look for inspiration for ideas? Books, magazines, television are 44

all useful tools, but mostly my inspiration comes from good quality ingredients, sharing and discussing ideas with my work colleagues, they are always honest with me and we are never too polite to tell each other if something doesn’t work What is the worst thing about modern restaurant cooking? Often many chefs overcomplicate dishes by trying to incorporate too many weird and wonderful ingredients or flavour combinations in the attempt to be ‘different’. Classic flavour combinations have stood the test of time because they work. I prefer to take flavours which I know will work together and present them in new and exciting ways

What do you think about the Aberdeen restaurant scene? How has it evolved in the past few years? There has definitely been a growth in demand for quality in food and service in the Aberdeen restaurant scene in recent years. It is encouraging to see that our customers are now showing greater interest in the quality and origin of the ingredients, the skill in which they are presented both on the plate and in the dining room and that more and more chefs in Aberdeen are taking advantage of the bounty of locally produced ingredients and are proud to tell there customers about them.

Kitchen God

With the exceptions of small kittens and Jimmy Choo sales, there are few things quite as endearing as a chap who can rustle up something fabulous in the kitchen. All it takes is a recipe book, a bit of knowledge and the right kit, so here’s our selection of everything a chap needs to be a Kitchen God…

A good set of knives is essential for the Kitchen God. We liked Stelton’s macho black stainless steel blades. Combining outstanding functionality with the clean, stylish lines so typical of Danish design, there are five different knives in the Pure Black collection. From £40 upwards.

ART FEATURE

> WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

Local artist Susie Hunt was the initial creative force behind NEOS, the annual event that allows the public to visit local artists and craftspeople in their studios throughout the North East. We caught up with Susie to find out more about her own work... “Drawing has always been important to me, for as long as I can remember. My parents allowed me to paint on my bedroom walls, covering over and reworking when I ran out of space. These days, the landscape through which I walk every day inspires my work. Trees and water are a 60

constant theme. I learn continually from other artists. My first true and on-going inspiration is the landscape work of Ivon Hitchens, and David Hockney always lifts my spirits. “My work is continually shifting and I believe this is due to teaching, which I enjoy tremendously. I want to offer diverse and stimulating techniques, using mainly waterbased media, but also introducing pupils to print-making, collage and other mixed media. “I wanted to be part of the art world in Scotland and to connect with other creative people, so the founding of North East Open Studios was absolutely critical for me. As a ‘blow in’, you can skate on

the surface or roll your sleeves up and dig deep. The new NEOS committee brings with it renewed energy and fresh ideas, it is huge now. “I also give myself the stress and tummy churning challenge of putting together shows of work for exhibition rather than working to commission. My prices range from £100 - £1000, with my work being shown in local galleries. My next exhibition is at ‘Touched By Scotland’ in November. “It’s a privilege to live in the Northeast of Scotland where people have been so generous and welcoming: I feel at home”. www.susiehunt.co.uk

I realised there was only one life and that I had to live it”, Sheena explained. “One day, I made an angel from 64

some wire I had lying around and a crystal drop and I posted the picture online. Suddenly people wanted me to make some for them. Before I knew it, I had so many angels lying around that I had to hang them all on a decorative tree in my living room and The Angel Tree was born. “Now, most of my time is taken up making wire and bead brooches, rings and necklaces. I also work with fabric materials and felt and make a range of items including flower brooches, phone covers, children’s hair bands and most recently pretty fairy wands.

> WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

“I also run party events to teach people how to work with the materials before going on to make a classic Angel Tree brooch or necklace which they can keep and take home. Workshops are very popular and a great night in or out with the girls. My teaching skills still come in handy for keeping everyone in line, sometimes. “I currently supply Starfish Studios in Johnshaven, the Bothy Gift Shop in Foveran and Flourish in Aberdeen. TRAVEL FEATURE

So FaroE, So Good...

> PHOTOGRAPHY BY ÓLAVUR FREDRIKSEN WWW.VISITFAROE.COM > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

A group of eighteen mountainous islands jutting out of the North Atlantic at 62o North may not seem the most obvious choice for a relaxing long weekend, but the Faroe Islands offer a perfect blend of stress- free style, great food, laidback activities and incredible scenery. Packing is a breeze since the emphasis is on cosy layers rather than futile attempts to fit into a bikini, and the hilly terrain means there’s no point in taking heels. Everyone wears fleece or woolly jumpers and even the Tourist Board admits that Faroese fashion designers tend towards practical rather than haute couture. Atlantic Airways provide the quickest and least expensive way to the Islands, with flights via Gatwick. The airline may consider reintroducing direct flights from Aberdeen again, but in the meantime, Gatwick offers plenty of browsing opportunities in Hugo Boss, All Saints and Kurt Geiger. We split our stay between the Hotel Føroyar in Tórshavn and a traditional village guesthouse called Gjáargarður in the village 66

of Gjógv. Both deservedly sit at the top of Tripadvisor’s rankings. Perched above the city, the modern 4-star Hotel Føroyar proved the ideal base for a few days in Tórshavn, with sleekly designed rooms, panoramic views over the town and coast, and one of the city’s best restaurants which offers a range of tasting menus. A twenty minute downhill stroll takes you into town, though the return journey is a steep hike. Lamb, fish and seafood are the culinary mainstays in the city’s restaurants, cafes and bars. Some places serve puffin and pilot whale, though we opted for less challenging dishes.

Tórshavn is only slightly bigger than Peterhead, but manages to pack in everything from museums and a charming old town, to a shopping mall, cinema, handicraft stores, galleries and a symphony orchestra. The painted wooden houses all seem to be immaculately kept and it’s delightful to spend a few hours getting lost in the maze of winding streets. The city is not without its luxuries, as a visit to jewellers Gull-Horniđ and Niels L. Arge or homewares store Maria Poulsen prove. We headed up to the tiny village of Gjógv on the north coast of Eysturoy for the weekend,

through waterside villages with more letters in their names than inhabitants. Faroese roads are a mixture of two-lane highways, with smaller settlements being served by single track roads which cling precipitously to the steep sides of the fjords. Hairpin bends, spectacular waterfalls, free-range sheep and a minimalist approach to safety barriers make it a hairraising experience, worthy of being featured on Top Gear. The efficient bus network might prove a better option for nervous drivers, while those determined to arrive in style can take advantage of Atlantic’s amazingly cheap helicopter flights. Gjáargarður is a grass-roofed eco-haven of calm, which boasts the perfect location for getting away from it all. There are some invigorating hiking routes and the two highest mountains on the islands nearby but you can also potter round the village, poke

about in rock pools on the shoreline or just watch the ducks on the riverbank. The guesthouse itself combines traditional architecture with a choice of spacious, well-appointed rooms, or cosy little nooks for backpackers. The staff are unobtrusively attentive and the food is superb. Gjáargarður even boasts its own beer as the prefect end to a day spent exploring the area. When you need to get away from it all, the Faroes make for an ideal break, especially during spring and summer months, which feature a series of cultural and music festivals, as well as outstanding hill walking, climbing and naturespotting opportunities. Trust meyou won’t regret leaving your heels behind.

Expect The Unexpected > WORDS BY KATE GRAY

Standing outside Oxfam in the middle of Chapel Street is not how I would ever have expected to learn that Aberdeen’s first female GP was named Elizabeth Latto Ewen, but because of a round plaque telling me that 26 Chapel Street was once the site of her practice - that’s exactly what happened. All over Aberdeen, all kinds of buildings are home to plaques that commemorate important individuals who have lived and worked in the city. I now know that 48 Skene Terrace was once home to Sir David Gill, the Fellow of the Royal Society who took the first photographs of the moon in 1868, while 5 St Mary’s Place was was home to the great Scottish author Lewis Grassic Gibbon. 70

The plaques started appearing in the 19th century, but they were unregulated, raised by individuals or clubs and societies. It wasn’t until 1978 that Aberdeen City Council took over, and from then on all commemorative plaques were of the distinctive circular design. There are now more than 107 across Aberdeen, marking the achievements of exceptional people. There are still a few rectangular plaques scattered around, part of a small series placed at the sites of old wynds and closes and court houses, but these are far less common, as most recent plaques commemorate people rather than places. I have – like a lot of people - walked

past most of them any number of times without noticing. It’s easy to do - most people aren’t expecting a history lesson while they walk through the city centre. But it’s worth expecting one. I am still surprised that I’ve learned so much about the city by doing nothing more than glancing at a few walls.

FAMILY FEATURE

> WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

For as long as I’ve lived in Aberdeen, I have known Crathes Castle as a great destination for a day out with the family. It seems that every time I go, I discover something new and my most recent visit was no exception. Tucked away in a quiet corner just above the Castle, I discovered a lovely little craft studio called Arting Around. Perhaps the location has much to do with it, but there is almost a magical feel to the workshop, and from the minute you walk through the door, you are overwhelmed with a desire to create something wonderful. Luckily, the staff are on

hand to make sure that you do. But first you must select your ‘canvas’ from the comprehensive range of ceramic and wooden figures that are available. Though you can cover your selection in everything from paint to pom poms, I decided to try something called Decopatch which involves tearing paper into small pieces and gluing them to the desired surface. The result exceeded all of my expectations, and I was left with an ornament that could easily pass as storebought. If you have little ones in your group who are not so keen on craft, Arting Around has an enchanted soft play area where the under-7s can blow off steam while their adults get creative. Arting Around is open to the public at weekends and on school holidays, but their speciality is hosting bespoke kids’ birthday parties where

you get the place and some party entertainers all to yourself. Arting Around offers corporate team building sessions, wedding entertainment packages, and can easily entertain children of all ages on family fun days. They also host a variety of seasonal and topical events, both in studio and on the castle grounds. With everything on offer, you may find yourself Arting Around all year round.

Alex HutcHeon How often have you said to yourself…“I know I need a Will and I really must get round to doing something about it”… and then a few months go by and you find yourself thinking exactly the same thing? If you die without making a Will, which is legally defined as dying intestate, then the law decides who is to benefit from your Estate and to what extent. However, if you have a Will then you have control and therefore you can decide who you wish to benefit and by how much. Having a Will in place makes the administration of your Estate far more straightforward and therefore quicker, which will bring some comfort to your loved ones at a difficult time. It is also important to note that certain legal and onerous requirements under intestacy are avoided which, again, makes the administration of the Estate easier and to be blunt, cheaper. Also when a Will is prepared opportunities exist to mitigate Inheritance Tax and to address many other factors too numerous to mention here; however some obvious examples are:• A significant and/or permanent change in personal relationships or

life events, not only for the testator i.e. the person making the Will, but also for his or her family e.g. co-habitation, separation, divorce, re-marriage or death. Children from a first marriage often lose out to a new spouse (and his or her blood relative) on the subsequent death of their parent. • Any addition or a subtraction to the family.

charging a fee. All that we ask in return for this service is that the fee that we would normally charge is donated to a charity that helps people both in the UK and around the world. Please take this as your invitation to contact us in order to arrange your Will and raise money for deserving charities at the same time.

• A significant adjustment in resources, again not only for the testator but also for his or her family, hopefully favourable, but in today’s economic climate, sadly sometimes the opposite. While no one really wishes to contemplate their own mortality, the existence of a Will to distribute your Estate will bring considerable peace of mind, not only to you having made the Will but also would bring welcome reassurance, assistance and protection to your loved ones when the time comes to settle your Estate. Please note that in November our firm is very pleased to be taking part in Will Aid. Will Aid is the UK’s top charity Will-writing scheme and during November we are offering to draw up your Will without

MUSIC FEATURE

Oxjam: “Local talent, Global impact” > WORDS BY DAVID NICHOLSON

North-east music lovers are geared up for a great night out on Friday October 19th when the fourth annual ‘Oxjam Takeover Aberdeen’ music festival is due to descend on the city. Taking place across six venues and featuring around thirty - thirty!! - of the best acts that Aberdeen has to offer, not only does Oxjam promise to be a great night out, but - as all proceeds go to Oxfam – there can hardly be a better excuse to head out and let your hair down. It’s also an excellent opportunity for Trend readers to sample some of the talent championed in these pages over the years, including Stanley, Indian Red Lopez, Steven Milne and Amy Sawers – as well as a host of notable acts including The Marionettes, Dolphinz, The Kitchen Cynics, Oliver Richard, Eric Euan and Chris Carroll to name a few. 82

Production co-ordinator Shawn Skinner is enthusiastic at the prospect. He told me, “We’re really excited about this year’s line up. My mission statement is to showcase the very best that the North East has to offer - and I think I’ve done that. “All of the bands deserve credit for their willingness to donate time and effort to this great cause for free. “Oxjam aims to bring communities together to celebrate local talent while simultaneously helping Oxfam raise money to fight poverty at home and abroad. “All you have to do is have a good time, enjoy some great music and in so doing raise money for a great charity. Everyone wins!”

Wristbands cost only £10 from venues (£7 advance from www. WeGotTickets.co.uk) and allow festival-goers to hop between The Athenaeum, Snafu, The Blue Lamp, Café Drummonds and The Tunnels - picking and choosing which bands they want to see just like a traditional festival (but without the mud!) And with free entry to Club Snafu included, attendees can party the night away to the wee small hours, safe in the knowledge that they’ve helped make the world a better place.. THE LAST WORD

Nick’s Foodie Heaven awaits > WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

At 53, celebrity chef Nick Nairn looks like a spring chicken. Even sporting a bit of designer stubble the day I met him at his cook school in Aberdeen’s Back Wynd, he was full of energy and good cheer. Nick had just spent the day tutoring 24 eager pupils in his so-called Foodie Heaven upstairs at the school and they wanted him to sign his cook books and get a souvenir photo downstairs. So what was on the menu for the day-troopers? Nick, his head chef Kenny Smart and the rest of the team supervised the preparation of a cheese soufflé starter, a duck main course with shredded cabbage and crispy bacon, creamy 90

mash and game gravy and a Scottish raspberry crème brulee dessert. The classmates tucked into their creations and filled brown paper bags with the leftovers to take home. They also spent freely in the shop which stocks everything from pasta machines to coloured mini chef’s blow torches. Nick is a busy man. He opened his first cook school in 2000 at Port of Menteith in Stirlingshire where he grew up, he is never off the telly and he acts as a consultant, hardly surprising given his vast experience of the industry. For example, he got his first Michelin

star back in 1991. “I’m thrilled at how well the Aberdeen venture has gone and our two-hour quick-cook sessions have also proved very popular,” he said. These take place downstairs at 15 Back Wynd, once the premises of ironmongers Shirras Laing, and dishes you can try out include Asian sea bass, Chang Mai curry and the perfect steak. Find out more at www.nicknairn. com/Aberdeen or phone 01877 389900. Oh, and Nick, if you need to get rid of your designer stubble, there’s a Turkish barber next door to your school.
